  • The Unhackable Internet: How Rebuilding

Prometheus Books The Unhackable Internet: How Rebuilding

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLike most aspects of modern existence, more and more of our financial lives have migrated wholly to the digital realm. With the benefits of ease that our Internet allows us, that transition also raises numerous – and dangerous – threats to national security, our money, and the systems we use to store and transfer it. Cybersecurity is one of the most formidable challenges that the world faces today. From cyberattacks by foreign adversaries like China and Russia, the explosion of cryptocurrency, the advancement of ransomware, phishing, surveillance apps, spying software, and logic bombs, and the increasing savvy and daring shown by Internet hackers, the next financial panic is likely to be delivered to us through use or abuse of technology. In Unhackable, author and financial services and technology expert Thomas P. Vartanian exposes the vulnerabilities of the many networks that we rely on today, as well as the threats facing the integrity of our national security and financial services sector. Recent cybersecurity failures like the Solar Winds attack, which gave hackers believed to be directed by Russian intelligence unprecedented access to federal agencies and private corporations, and the breach of Equifax, which compromised the data of nearly half of all US citizens, have revealed the inadequacies of our current computing systems and the dysfunction of the bureaucracy that oversees them. Even further, attacks like these underscore the need for a centralized and empowered government administration charged with protecting our country’s data and information. Vartanian offers comprehensive solutions to the problems we face: fortifying our Internet with channels dedicated to financial transactions that use heightened authentication, governance, and enforcement; incorporating the benefits that blockchain has to offer; and investing more in the rapidly developing world of quantum computing are all necessary steps to shoring up our online security. This incisive and important book investigates the creation and history of our financial Internet, the vulnerabilities of our current data storage and sharing platforms, the pitfalls and potential that cryptocurrency holds, the promise that quantum computing and the blockchain offer, and how we can – and must – make a stronger and safer Internet. Trade Review“The greatest threat to today’s global financial system is not financial risk or geopolitical uncertainty, but the danger of cyber-attack through a poorly defended Internet. In TheUnhackable Internet, Tom Vartanian describes in detail how we got to this point and suggests practicable steps that could make us safer. Most important, he makes clear that our openness to such attack is a choice, and one we can change. Governments and markets should listen.”–Randal K. Quarles, Chairman and Founder of The Cynosure Group, former Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve System for Supervision, Chairman of the G-20’s Financial Stability Board, member of the Federal Open Market Committee, and Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury“The UnhackableInternet brings order to the digital wild west. Data is the world's most valuable economic asset and yet we live in the age of eternal breach. Hindsight has proved the folly of Mark Zuckerberg's mantra ‘move fast and break things.’ We ignore the lessons of history at our peril; a less hackable Internet is the imperative of our time. Vartanian's compelling vision – achievable if we pull together – puts the adults back in charge of the Internet.”– James Dever, Co-Founder and Principal at Lockhaven Solutions LLC and former U.S. Air Force Professor of Cyber Warfare and U.S. Army Cyber Warfare Judge Advocate“For anyone interested in the future of the internet, this book is a tour de force. ‘Security’ is the word that comes to mind for anyone developing a business over the internet. The Unhackable Internet provides an experienced and creative approach to dealing with the risks and threats to financial infrastructures exposed by internet growth. Vartanian clearly presents the past and present of online banking, engaging in a very much needed debate on the possible paths for the future of internet security. The Unhackable Internet leaves readers not only informed, but willing to move ahead with viable alternatives to keeping the internet in the boundaries of law and order without killing its creativity drive.” – Sylvia Elaluf-Calderwood, PhD,Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics, Florida International University College of Business“Vartanian’s tour de force analyzes a continuum of solutions to make the Internet safer and more unhackable. It lays out a sober assessment of the financial Armageddon, however unthinkable, that could be avoided but for the demoralizing and dispiriting failure of leadership which has followed a predictable cycle of attack, rinse, and repeat. The Unhackable Internet offers comprehensive and insightful cybersecurity solutions that just may change the Internet forever. It should be required reading every executive and policymaker.” – Roslyn Layton, PhD, Aalborg University, Department of Electronic Systems, National Security Institute, George Mason University

Book SynopsisIf I were giving out an award for 'book of the year' for internal audit professionals, I would certainly award it to her outstanding manuscript: Radical Reporting: Writing Better Audit, Risk, Compliance and Information Security Reports. - Richard Chambers, Former President and CEO, The Institute of Internal AuditorsMost people dread writing reports; they also dread reading reports. What they donât realize is that the techniques that make writing more readable make it more powerful. This is especially relevant for professionals in areas such as audit, risk, compliance, and information security. This small volume provides the tools and techniques needed to improve reports. It does so through addressing crucial concepts all too often overlooked in the familiar rush to perform tasks, complete projects, and meet deadlines. These concepts â the role of culture in communication; the link between logic and language; the importance of organizing thoughts before writing; and how to achieve clarity â may seem academic or theoretical. Theyâre not. Unless writers understand their own thoughts, actions, and objectives, they cannot hope to communicate them at all â let alone clearly. This second edition develops these points with additional material on critical thinking, as well as the use of AI in reporting.

A must-read for anyone interested in Russiaâs ongoing confrontation with the West and the form that it has taken in Ukraine." Charles A. Kupchan, Professor of International Affairs, Georgetown University, and Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations"When the Dean of the Art of Strategy expounds, the students say âGive us an example.â And what an example!, It is an instant classic of the âcase study,â casting all others of the genre into the shadows. To comprehend the vicissitudes of clashing nations, the book is as surprising as it is convincing." -Charles Hill, Distinguished Fellow in Grand Strategy, Yale University, and Research Fellow, the Hoover Institution, Stanford University"Freedman cuts through the fog of disinformation that has engulfed Ukraine, systematically challenging Western and Russian 'hot takes' alike, grounding his study in fact and imbuing it with just the right mix of wisdom and humility. Above all, he reminds us that war is a time not to seek flippant answers, but to ask vexing questions." -Samuel Greene, Director, King's Russia Institute and Reader in Russian Politics, King's College London"Freedman places the war in Ukraine under the dispassionate eye of a master strategist and applying lessons from the study of deterrence, limited war, and strategic theory. Book SynopsisThis book demystifies and explains a subject that affects every one of us in our private lives and at work. Security is a practical discipline concerned with safeguarding lives, property, information, wealth, reputations, and social wellbeing. It is the basis of civilised society. People, businesses, and nations cannot thrive in its absence, whereas the right kind of security frees us to live fulfilling lives. But deciding what is needed, and then making it happen, is not easy. The threats to our security are complex and continually evolving, as criminals, hackers, terrorists, and hostile foreign states continually find new ways of staying one step ahead of us, their potential victims. At the same time, we are continually creating new vulnerabilities as we adopt new technologies and new ways of working. Those who do not understand the fundamentals of security, risk, and resilience open themselves, and those around them, to avoidable dangers, needless anxieties, and unnecessary costs. InTrade ReviewAn impeccable and important work that security people can push into the hands of others [...] who want an authoritative, yet crisply-written book on security. * Professional Security *... a deceptively easy read in that there are ten bite-size takeaway nuggets of digestible information that will make you more aware, informed and alert. Where Martin scores heavily is in the authenticity he brings to the subject, making his set of ideas less of a management self-help book and more of a first step towards protecting your assets. * Nick Smith, E & T Magazine *Table of ContentsLord (Jonathan) Evans of Weardale, Director General of MI5 (2007DS2013): Foreword 1: Rule 1: Security Rules 2: Rule 2: Risk is the Key 3: Rule 3: Think like an Attacker 4: Rule 4: There are Three Ways to Reduce Risk 5: Rule 5: Build Resilience 6: Rule 6: It's All About People 7: Rule 7: Everyone is Biased 8: Rule 8: Cyber is New Ways of Doing Old Things 9: Rule 9: Know What Good Looks Like 10: Rule 10: Know Who's in Charge

Book SynopsisNorges Bank has been an integrated part of Norwegian economic development from the complicated birth of the new nation-state after the Napoleonic wars to the present nouveau-richness of the Norwegian oil economy. This book traces its 200-year history, focusing on its relations with political institutions that have shaped and reshaped the bank''s role since its establishment in 1816. In the first fragile years of the new nation, Norges Bank took centre stage in the discussion on how to reconstruct a collapsed monetary system, and how trust and resources should support the core financial function of the State apparatus. The financial and political role of the bank came to the fore from the late 1800s and peaked during the turbulent interwar years of the 1920s, after which the bank became the foremost defender of the monetary order and the gold standard, in bitter conflict with the emerging Labour Party. The blow that the Second World War delivered to central bank independence left the bank firmly subordinated to the Ministry of Finance. Not until 1986 was larger autonomy in monetary policy granted, and since then the bank''s weight and responsibilities have continued to expand with its position as manager of the Norwegian oil fund. The bank''s role has been largely defined by perceptions of what kind of financial services Norway needed, how economic policy was coordinated, and how discretionary power was distributed between the elected bodies, the executive branch, and underlying institutions with a defined mandate. The central aim of this book is to trace and explain these changes over the past two centuries.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Norges Bank 1816-2016 1: A Bank of Issue Forged in Silver and Tears 2: A Bank with a Divided Mandate 3: A Relieved Norges Bank 4: Gold and Coins in the Age of Standardization 5: A Banker's Bank 6: Blurring the Borders: The Bank During the First World War 7: The Pyrrhic Victories of the 1920s 8: The 1930s Crisis: Collapse and Zenith 9: Occupation and Loss of Autonomy 10: The Government's Bank 11: The Foreign Currency Exchange Rate Policy Up Until 1986 12: Downfall of the Regulatory System and Triumph of the Market 13: In Search for an Anchor 14: The Investment Manager Conclusion: Norges Bank and the State, in Present and Past

This work paints a picture of the state of global sexual commerce and its relationship to a burgeoning consumer culture.Trade Review"This is an ambitious book - highly readable, compelling, and original. Bernstein's claim is that the character and organization of sex work has shifted. Whereas the signature form of sex work used to be the nonwhite streetwalker working in largely marginal neighborhoods, today, she reveals, sex work is largely private, relying heavily on the Internet, and provided by someone that is as often white and middle-class as nonwhite and poor." - Steven Seidman, author of Beyond the Closet"

Book SynopsisFrom EverQuest to World of Warcraft, online games have evolved from the exclusive domain of computer geeks into an extraordinarily lucrative staple of the entertainment industry. People of all ages and from all walks of life now spend thousands of hoursand dollarspartaking in this popular new brand of escapism. But the line between fantasy and reality is starting to blur. Players have created virtual societies with governments and economies of their own whose currencies now trade against the dollar on eBay at rates higher than the yen. And the players who inhabit these synthetic worlds are starting to spend more time online than at their day jobs. In Synthetic Worlds, Edward Castronova offers the first comprehensive look at the online game industry, exploring its implications for business and culture alike. He starts with the players, giving us a revealing look into the everyday lives of the gamersoutlining what they do in their synthetic worlds and why. He then describes the economies inside these worlds to show how they might dramatically affect real world financial systems, from potential disruptions of markets to new business horizons. Ultimately, he explores the long-term social consequences of online games: If players can inhabit worlds that are more alluring and gratifying than reality, then how can the real world ever compete? Will a day ever come when we spend more time in these synthetic worlds than in our own? Or even more startling, will a day ever come when such questions no longer sound alarmist but instead seem obsolete? With more thanten million active players worldwideand with Microsoft and Sony pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into video game developmentonline games have become too big to ignore. Synthetic Worlds spearheads our efforts to come to terms with this virtual reality and its concrete effects. Illuminating. . . . Castronova's analysis of the economics of fun is intriguing.Virtual-world economies are designed to make the resulting game interesting and enjoyable for their inhabitants. Many games follow a rags-to-riches storyline, for example. But how can all the players end up in the top 10%? Simple: the upwardly mobile human players need only be a subset of the world's population. An underclass of computer-controlled 'bot'citizens, meanwhile, stays poor forever. Mr. Castronovaexplains all this with clarity, wit, and a merciful lack of academic jargon. The EconomistSynthetic Worlds is a surprisingly profound book about the social, political, and economic issues arising from the emergence of vast multiplayer games on the Internet. What Castronova has realized is that these games, where players contribute considerable labor in exchange for things they value, are not merely like real economies, they are real economies, displaying inflation, fraud, Chinese sweatshops, and some surprising in-game innovations.Tim Harford, Chronicle of Higher Education

In this age of terrorism, 'homeland security' initiatives, the expanded use of wiretapping and other forms of surveillance, and a new debate about the relationship between civil liberties and governmental authority, New York Undercover is also timely." - Jeffrey Adler, University of Florida"

Beatniks, hippie seekers, spiritual tourists, mountain climbers diverse groups of people have traveled there over the years, searching for their own personal Shangri-La. In Far Out, Mark Liechty traces the Western fantasies that captured the imagination of tourists in the decades after World War II, asking how the idea of Nepal shaped the everyday cross-cultural interactions that it made possible. Emerging from centuries of political isolation but eager to engage the world, Nepalis struggled to make sense of the hordes of exotic, enthusiastic foreigners. They quickly embraced the phenomenon, however, and harnessed it to their own ends by building tourists' fantasies into their national image and crafting Nepal as a premier tourist destination. Liechty describes three distinct phases: the postwar era, when the country provided a Raj-like throwback experience for

Book SynopsisFor most people, grocery shopping is a mundane activity. Few stop to think about the massive, global infrastructure that makes it possible to buy Chilean grapes in a Philadelphia supermarket in the middle of winter. Yet every piece of food represents an interlocking system of agriculture, manufacturing, shipping, logistics, retailing, and nonprofits that controls what we eator don't. The Problem with Feeding Cities is a sociological and historical examination of how this remarkable network of abundance and convenience came into being over the last century. It looks at how the US food system transformed from feeding communities to feeding the entire nation, and it reveals how a process that was once about fulfilling basic needs became focused on satisfying profit margins. It is also a story of how this system fails to feed people, especially in the creation of food deserts. Andrew Deener shows that problems with food access are the result of infrastructural failings stemming from how Trade Review"...a major addition to the literature on food infrastructure history and analysis." * Civil Engineering Magazine *"We take food for granted—that it will always be on the shelf, mostly affordable, and safe to eat. He does an excellent job taking the reader on the trip--by boat, by railroad, long haulers, and cars--to see how food gets from point A to point B (with a lot of other points in-between)...Changes in food distribution in the twentieth century led to much of the infrastructural decay we see in US cities in the 21st century and exacerbated food inequalities that we still see today." * Urbanities: The Journal of Urban Ethnography *"Andrew Deener’s fascinating book represents an important contribution to the sparsely populated field of social studies of food infrastructure. . . . The Problem with Feeding Cities represents an ambitious attempt to unpack the black box of fresh food provisioning in the United States and theorize the role of food infrastructure in shaping the contemporary city. . . .[It] reveals the importance of understanding what stands between the proverbial farm and table in terms of crafting policies and theories that can adequately confront the 'problem with feeding cities.'" * Gastronomica *“Most of us give little thought to the question of how our food gets to the grocery store, or of how and why this matters. But Deener has spent years investigating the hidden infrastructure that shapes what we grow, what we eat, what we spend, and, most surprisingly, how we’ve built cities, suburbs, and transit networks around the world.
