Book SynopsisBeyond the Breach: An Exegetical Study of John 4:1-42 as a Text of Jewish-Samaritan Reconciliation focuses on the ethical element of loving the enemy in John which challenges the earlier consensus that one cannot find the theme of loving the enemy/neighbor in John’s gospel, be it explicitly or implicitly. This study defends the position that in the gospel of John there are elements of reconciling love, a depiction of loving one’s enemies, and in particular in the Samaritan episode (John 4:1-42). This book critically analyzes existing research on the theme of Jewish-Samaritan relations and ‘the world behind’ John 4:1-42. It makes use of recent methods in biblical studies to interpret the complexity of texts, underlying themes and concerns in the way John 4:1-42 describes the Samaritan mission of the Johannine Jesus.

Peeters Publishers The Ultimate and the Penultimate Text of the Book
Book SynopsisIn this monograph, differences between the Hebrew and the Greek text of the Book of Joshua are studied. In chapter 1 the differences in commands and their executions are analysed, with examples from the story of the collapse of the wall of Jericho (Josh 6) and the battle against Ai (Josh 8). In chapter 2, examples, like "all the law that Joshua commanded" (e.g. Josh 1:7) and the concept of "crossing this Jordan," are analysed and explained using the category of "nomistic alterations." Then, the texts dealing with the concept of "burning with fire" (Josh 7) and "stoning and hanging (Josh 8:29), and Josh 8:30-35 are studied. In each of these cases, the final editor of the Hebrew Masoretic Text revised an older Hebrew text and sought to make sure that the text of the final version better reflected the laws as given in the book of Deuteronomy. The problematic variant with regard to “returning to Gilgal” in Josh 10 is studied in chapter 3. In chapter 4, the line of command is studied: Joshua clearly, albeit rather late in his life, stands in the shadow of Moses and continues in his line. In all the chapters, text critical data of the Masoretic Text, the Old Greek, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Vetus Latina and Josephus are taken into account, as well as the data from the early Jewish revisers and the Hexaplaric and the Lucianic revisions. Moreover, the translation technique of specific passages is studied as well as the literary- and redactional development of the text. After studying all the variants, it is proposed that the Masoretic Text grosso modo is a further development of the Hebrew text underlying the Vorlage of the Old Greek text of the book of Joshua and the editorial strategies by which the penultimate text of the book of Joshua was transformed into the ultimate Hebrew, Masoretic Text of the book of Joshua are described.

Étonnamment, l'episkopè divine n’a encore jamais fait l’objet d’une recherche systématique en Lc-Ac. Il s’agit d’un trésor inexploré. L’exégèse minutieuse, conduite suivant une approche intertextuelle, débouche ici sur une brève théologie de l’action de Dieu, spécialement pertinente en des contextes de fermeture ou d’impasse. Jusque là où personne ne l’attendait, Dieu instaure des relations nouvelles et reconfigure les identités en présence. La « visite », ou plutôt l’intervention salvifique de Dieu, relève de son initiative et engage une singulière pédagogie.

The person of king David of biblical history have long ago been the object of persistent scholarly interest. The present volume aims at offering an assemblage of the diversified memories constructed about David in various collections and communities. Narratives in the Deuteronomistic historiography reflect Ancient Near Eastern social and legal customs, and are added by literary topoi bearing specific meaning, customary motifs of royal biographies. Persian period Chronicles offer a substantially different picture of David. The Psalms’ religious poetry memorized him as an author and example, while prophetic literature and its exegesis refer to him in messianic terms. David is one of the rare figures of biblical history remembered also in visual memory, in the synagogue of Dura Europos.

Book SynopsisComme le cinquième, le premier livre ne se contente pas de juxtaposer des prières isolées ; les quarante-et-un psaumes qui le constituent forment une architecture fort élaborée, selon le principe d’autosimilarité des fractales, ou suivant le procédé de la mise en abyme. Le livre est organisé comme sa deuxième section et davantage encore comme la troisième. Le premier versant de chacune de ces sections met en scène les ennemis du roi dont le péché consiste à le persécuter « sans raison », le psalmiste protestant de son innocence et de sa fidélité à la Loi. Puis le centre de ces sections opère un renversement vers le deuxième versant où le psalmiste prend conscience de son propre péché et de l’incapacité où il se trouve d’observer la Loi ; il lui faut donc être « instruit » des « chemins » de Dieu qui lui pardonnera ses fautes et inscrira sa Loi « au milieu de ses entrailles ». Il s’agit donc du passage de la première alliance, l’alliance mosaïque du Sinaï, à la nouvelle alliance, celle qu’ont annoncée les prophètes de l’exil, qui repose sur le pardon des péchés, sur le don de la connaissance intérieure de la loi et sur l’universalité du salut qui atteindra toutes les nations. Ce même mouvement se vérifie sur l’ensemble du livre. Sa première section (Ps 1–18) est toute entière occupée par la menace que font peser sur le psalmiste ses ennemis, tandis que les deux sections suivantes (19–25 et 26–41) opèrent le passage de l’ancienne alliance à la nouvelle. Un basculement analogue organisait déjà la sous-section centrale de la deuxième section (20–24) et celle de la troisième section (32–37), toujours dans le même sens.

Book SynopsisAfter discussing 1 Timothy in the 19th Colloquium Oecumenicum Paulinum in 2006 (published as COP 18), the 21st Colloquium devoted itself to 2 Timothy and Titus. About 30 international Pauline scholars gathered in the Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome between 14 and 18 September 2010 for scholarly exchanges and discussion of seven scholarly papers on the chapters of 2 Timothy and Titus. In this volume (COP 20) these papers written in French, English and German by famous scholars from Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic traditions are edited and made available to the larger scholarly community. After a synthesis of the discussion presented in the book (Bieringer), four scholars each focus on one chapter of 2 Timothy (2 Tim 1: Wolter; 2 Tim 2: Gourgues; 2 Tim 3: Karakolis and 2 Tim 4: MacDonald). The Letter to Titus is divided into two parts which are each treated in one study (Tit 1-2: Flichy and Tit 3: Herzer). The book concludes with a thematic study on God’s philanthropy and human works touching on both letters (Penna). In this way the seven studies of this book treat 2 Timothy and Titus from beginning to end similar to a commentary. It is, however, a commentary that displays great diversity of approaches, methods, presuppositions. In the process of commenting on the texts, they also make a contribution to the highly significant recent discussion on the corpus theory and the question of authenticity.

Le commentaire chrétien de la Bible, confié jusque-là à des didascales, passe aux mains du puissant évêque d’Alexandrie, qui s’affranchit nettement de l’allégorisme des grands maîtres (Origène, Piérius, Didyme l’Aveugle) et emprunte au modèle exégétique d’Eusèbe de Césarée et des Antiochiens, tout en conservant une coloration alexandrine. Cette évolution est particulièrement sensible dans le «Commentaire sur les Douze Prophètes» et le «Commentaire sur Isaïe», où Cyrille propose un modèle d’interprétation plus équilibré, en insistant sur l’importance de la dimension historico-littérale de l’Écriture. À travers une analyse approfondie de sa méthode exégétique, cette monographie s’attache à la fois à faire ressortir l’originalité de la démarche cyrillienne et à souligner son rôle déterminant dans le renouvellement de la tradition alexandrine. Après le rappel des affinités les plus caractéristiques avec Origène, grammairien et allégoriste, cette étude a accordé une attention minutieuse à l’émergence d’une exégèse post-origénienne sous la plume de Cyrille: des changements de termes, de procédés, de contenu et de finalité qui témoignent d’une volonté de réforme. With Cyril of Alexandria (c. 378-444), a new period in the history of Alexandrian exegesis begins. Christian interpretation of the Bible, previously entrusted to teachers, passes now into the hands of a powerful bishop, who clearly overcomes the allegorism of the grand masters (Origen, Pierius, Didymus the Blind) and borrows elements from the exegetical model of Eusebius of Caesarea and the Antiochenes, yet retains an Alexandrian coloring. This evolution is particularly noticeable in the “Commentary on the Twelve Prophets” and the “Commentary on Isaiah”. In these works, Cyril proposes a more balanced model of interpretation, one which insists on the importance of Scripture’s historical-literal dimension. Through a detailed analysis of Cyril’s exegetical method, this study highlights the originality of the Cyrillian approach and underscores Cyril’s decisive role in the renewal of the Alexandrian tradition. After reviewing the most characteristic affinities with Origen, the grammarian and allegorist, particular attention is paid to the emergence of a post-Origenian exegesis in Cyril’s commentaries: changes in terminology, method, content, and purpose all attest his commitment to reform. Finally, the present work addresses the thorny question of Cyril’s sources by distinguishing those which merely parallel Cyril’s work from those which really influenced him.

En tablant sur les effets produits par le texte, il appert que dès les premiers versets, l’Évangile selon Matthieu cherche à dérouter ses lecteurs pour les préparer à lire un récit déconcertant.

Book SynopsisLe troisième livre du Psautier est nettement plus court que le premier et surtout que le cinquième. Ses dix-sept psaumes forment néanmoins une composition qui ne le cède en rien à celle des deux autres livres. La tonalité générale du livre est très sombre. Ce ne sont que plaintes, supplications et questions angoissées — « Pourquoi ? », « Jusqu’à quand ? » Et les réponses à ces questions ne semblent pas faites pour consoler les malheureux. S’ils sont tombés dans la détresse et l’angoisse, c’est qu’ils paient le prix de leurs péchés (78 ; 89). Ayant trahi l’alliance du temps de l’exode, ayant récidivé au temps de la monarchie davidique, les voilà livrés à la violence et à l’oppression de leurs ennemis. On croit entendre la voix du Serviteur crier, au centre du premier livre : « Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné ? » (Ps 22,2). Mais le Ps 22 ne s’arrête pas dans la tombe. Le psalmiste est sauvé de la gueule du lion et il peut dire : « J’annoncerai ton nom à mes frères, en pleine assemblée je te louerai » (23) et même : « toutes les familles des nations se prosterneront devant lui » (28). De même, il est dans le troisième livre trois psaumes où retentit la louange, chacun occupant une position stratégique. Au centre de la première séquence de la section initiale (Ps 75) avec tout son peuple le psalmiste rend grâce en voyant le Seigneur prononcer le jugement contre les arrogants et il se réjouit à la pensée de pouvoir bientôt leur trancher les cornes. Au centre de la section centrale (Ps 81), un fervent appel à la louange pour célébrer la sortie d’Égypte précède un long discours de Dieu qui promet une nouvelle libération des ennemis actuels ainsi que leur conversion. Once the Flood Narrative and Foundling Narrative are synchronically and diachronically analysed, Babylonian and Egyptian languages, literature, and lexemes are examined to determine the source of tebâ; also, a recension history of scriptural traditions and daughter translations of the Flood and Foundling Narratives is charted. Exod 15:1-21 is examined, further, to extend the narratival arch of Exod to match that of Gen 6-9, which includes synthetic cosmological and covenantal elements, and temple ideology. Theologically, therefore, the multivocality of tebâ intimates God’s enshrined protection of a person from threat of death unto renewed life; thus, tebâ is a terminus technicus for a life-preserving receptacle.

Book SynopsisThis study attempts an investigation of Psalms 35–41 in the Masoretic tradition from two viewpoints and in the wake of current research on the Psalter. Firstly, the common opinion that they form a sub-unit of their own within the structure of the first ‘book’ of the Psalter (Psalms 3–41) is verified on the basis of their concatenation and pragmatics. The deepened insight leads to the conclusion that the bundle consists of two clusters, Psalms 35–37 and Psalms 38–41, each of which deals with the question of how to understand God’s tolerance towards the wicked, and how readers, following in the psalmist’s footsteps, might live on with that knowledge. The two clusters also provide evidence of an advancing argument in two parallel moves that are covered by the book’s main title: ‘From Servant of YHWH to Being Considerate of the Wretched’. Secondly, the Davidisation of the psalmist throughout the whole bundle is examined, not insofar as it is limited to explicit references to the historical David (especially in psalm headings), but also by feasible, lexical (Hebrew) analogies with the vita David in 1-2 Samuel (with 1 Kings 2). In this way, intertextuality is envisaged as a literary process that is initiated by the author and can be continued by well-informed readers. The monograph’s subtitle renders this as ‘The Figure David in the Reading Perspective of Psalms 35–41 MT’.

C’est que le péché, enraciné depuis toujours, marque tous les hommes. Sa forme la plus pernicieuse est « le men¬songe », qui, comme le lion et la vipère, se dissimule pour mieux frapper. Ce n’est pas un hasard si « le serpent » est évoqué en plein centre de la section centrale, rappelant le venin mortel du serpent des origines inoculé à l’humanité entière. D’autre part, le salut est destiné à tous ceux qui se fient en Dieu, en sa fidélité et en sa vérité. Et l’action de grâce retentit tout au long, jusqu’à la fin. Elle y retentit non seulement dans la bouche des fils d’Israël sauvés par leur Dieu, mais aussi sur les lèvres de tous les autres peuples ; apportant des pré¬sents au Temple, ils élèveront les mains dans la prière au Dieu unique, Roi de toute la terre. Refuge des hommes de génération en génération, le Seigneur sauve les hommes en rassasiant de longs jours ceux qui le craignent et en assurant sa fidélité aux fils de leurs fils, d’âge en âge ; malgré leurs infidélités toujours répétées, Dieu ne se lasse pas de leur pardonner. La section centrale (Ps 96–100) se distingue du reste du livre qu’elle surplombe. Tous les peuples sont appelés à se rendre à Jérusalem pour se prosterner devant le Roi de l’univers et bénir celui qui a sauvé le peuple choisi parmi toutes les familles de la terre. Portée par la promesse du Dieu unique et par l’espérance du peuple unique lui aussi, cette invitation se situe à l’horizon jamais atteint, mais toujours désiré, de l’eschatologie. Les foyers de l’ellipse (Ps 95 et 101) constituent la clé de lecture du livre. Le premier est focalisé sur un souhait adressé à l’homme: « Aujourd’hui si vous écoutiez sa voix... » (Ps 95,7). Le second pose une question à Dieu : « Quand viendras-tu vers moi ? » (Ps 101,2). Ainsi, tout le quatrième livre se trouve pris dans cette tension entre le désir de Dieu et celui de l’homme, chacun allant à la rencontre de l’autre, dans un « aujourd’hui » dont la fragilité place tout homme entre le matin où l’herbe fleurit et le soir où elle sèche, entre le temps des pères qu’évoque longuement la dernière section, temps du péché et du pardon, et le temps du salut et de la fin que contemple la section centrale.

Un Prologo (1,1-17), la genealogia del Messia Gesù, e un Epilogo (27,62–28,20), gli eventi del mattino di Pasqua, sono le sezioni più esterne: lanciano e compiono i fili fondamentali del Vangelo, la discendenza messianica (promessa a Davide) e l’apertura dell’Alleanza Nuova per Israele e per le Nazioni (la benedizione promessa ad Abramo). Due sezioni di rilegatura, il Discorso sulla Vita apostolica (Mt 10) e quello sulla Vita ecclesiale (Mt 18) sono i fuochi di una composizione ellittica: vi sono custodite le istruzioni che il Messia ha lasciato alla comunità, perché svolga la sua missione dal primo annuncio fino alla parusia, ovvero «fare discepoli tutte le Nazioni» (28,20). Le tre sezioni maggiori, che incastonano ciascuna gli altri insegnamenti di Gesù (il Discorso della montagna, il Discorso in parabole e il Discorso escatologico) si presentano come il deposito didattico vivo da cui il «discepolo-scriba», nella sua missione di generazione di nuovi discepoli, saprà «tirare fuori cose nuove e antiche» (Mt 13,52), portando avanti l’Alleanza sigillata nella vita offerta dal Servo e Figlio di Dio. L’analisi proposta è un primo sguardo analitico alla composizione retorica del Vangelo, auspicando che lo studio della composizione, nei suoi diversi livelli di architettura, conferisca al lettore una chiave per dischiuderne il senso.

Geremia, per le sue notevoli differenze tra l’edizione in greco (GerLXX) e l’edizione massoretica (GerTM), rappresenta un terreno particolarmente favorevole ad una simile indagine. Così, a partire dal tema ricorrente e proprio a Geremia dell’invio de “i miei servi, i profeti”, il presente studio offre una conferma alla teoria dell’espansione del libro da GerLXX a GerTM e una chiave ermeneutica del suo complicato processo di formazione, individuabile nella progressiva definizione del paradigma profetico espresso dalla formula letteraria d’invio dei servi del Signore, i profeti, come frutto della continua riflessione sulla possibilità di comunicare la parola divina.

Book SynopsisIn continuity with the previous BETL volumes on biblical metaphors, namely Metaphor in the Hebrew Bible edited by Pierre Van Hecke (BETL 187; 2005), and Metaphors in the Psalms co-edited by Pierre Van Hecke and Antje Labahn (BETL 231; 2010), this third volume intends to contribute to and foster biblical research on metaphors by focusing on a phenomenon that has only received scant attention thus far, namely the relationship and interplay between different metaphors in the texts of the Hebrew Bible. Biblical metaphors very often come in chains, especially in poetry, in which individual metaphors may interact in a number of ways, e.g. they may modify, reverse, shift, and even contradict or reinforce the previous ones. Biblical metaphors often create families of metaphors that form a genuine repertoire of images to think and talk about a specific target domain from multiple viewpoints. The same source domain often inspires clusters of thoughts about a wide variety of realities. The same “root metaphor” may run throughout an entire book or a section of a book, emerging on the surface level of the text in many ways and interacting with other metaphors along the text continuum. Networks of Metaphors in the Hebrew Bible investigates biblical metaphors not as “isolated events of discourse” but as constantly intertwining and shaping a network of multiple interactions between the figures.
