Peeters Publishers Le Psautier. L'ensemble du Livre des Louanges
Book SynopsisChacun des cinq livres du Psautier s’est révélé composé et bien composé. Au niveau de l’ensemble du Livre des Louanges, il en va de même. Les procédures de l’analyse rhétorique biblique ont permis de le montrer, malgré les lacunes d’une recherche qui ne pouvait guère s’appuyer sur beaucoup de travaux antérieurs. Selon la tradition, les cinq livres du Psautier correspondent aux cinq livres de la Tora. Dans la Tora, Dieu parle à l’homme, par les merveilles qu’il accomplit en sa faveur, puis par la loi qu’il lui donne ; ainsi il l’éduque, il l’« enseigne », selon le sens du mot tôrâ. Dans le Psautier, c’est l’homme qui parle à Dieu, qui lui dit ses malheurs, qui l’appelle au secours, qui le loue aussi pour son salut. Dans l’oppression, le psalmiste revendique quelquefois son innocence, mais Dieu lui fait prendre conscience de son péché. Alors, il confesse ses fautes et demande pardon. Enfin et surtout il se rend compte qu’il est incapable de comprendre la loi, de voir le chemin qui conduit à la vie. Et il demande, avec insistance, d’en être instruit. Dès le Premier livre, le psalmiste supplie : « Tes chemins, Yhwh, fais-moi connaitre, tes sentiers apprends-moi ! » (Ps 25,4). Et il le répètera à l’envi dans l’immense psaume de la Loi : « Instruis-moi, Yhwh, du chemin de tes décrets [...] Fais-moi comprendre et je garderai ta loi » (Ps 119,33-34). Ainsi la loi gravée sur la pierre, sera écrite sur son cœur de chair. C’est là le point de contact le plus visible entre la Tora et le Psautier. Moïse disait : « Écoute, Israël, les lois et les coutumes que je prononce aujourd’hui à vos oreilles » (Dt 5,1) et Dieu dit au cœur du Psautier : « Écoute, mon peuple, et je t’avertis, Israël, si tu m’écoutais... » (Ps 81,9). Incapable d’écouter et de comprendre, Israël demande donc d’être instruit de la Tora. Le Psautier est le remède guérissant de la surdité qui empêche d’entendre la Parole de Dieu, de la cécité qui empêche de voir le chemin de la vie. Ainsi commence à prendre corps la nouvelle alliance annoncée par les prophètes de l’exil, quand Dieu donnera à l’homme un cœur de chair sur lequel il écrira sa loi.

Book SynopsisThe book of Leviticus is by far the most quoted in rabbinic literature such as the Mishna or the Talmud, while it has been marginalized in the Christian tradition. Nevertheless, scholars of both traditions have again become highly interested in it for some decades now. As shown by many recent publications, the book is thoroughly studied for textual, literary, historical and reception aspects. It has often been said and written that the text of Leviticus is stable in comparison to many other books of the Hebrew Bible, and that its Greek translation is quite literal. Yet, the text of Leviticus continues to raise questions, not only regarding its content and textual witnesses, but also its interpretation, history and reception. The third international colloquium of the Dominique Barthélemy Institute, held in Fribourg in October 2015, aimed to bring together some specialists of the text of Leviticus in order to advance research on its textual witnesses and the aforementioned topics. The articles collected in this book reflect the width of current research. They deal with the witnesses to the text of Leviticus in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Masoretic Text, the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Septuagint. They also study the book’s Hebrew editing; its relation to other books such as Joshua, Luke-Acts and Flavius Josephus; and the challenge of its translation, with a case study in French. Le livre du Lévitique est de loin le plus cité dans la littérature juive, notamment la Mishna ou le Talmud, alors qu’il a été marginalisé dans la tradition chrétienne. Néanmoins, depuis quelques décennies, les chercheurs des deux bords se sont intéressés à ce livre. De nombreuses publications récentes montrent qu’il est étudié dans tous ses aspects textuels, littéraires, historique et dans sa réception. On a souvent affirmé que le texte du Lévitique est plus stable que celui de beaucoup d’autres livres de la Bible hébraïque, que sa traduction grecque est littérale, etc. Pourtant, ce texte continue de soulever des questions, non seulement en ce qui concerne ses témoins textuels, mais aussi son interprétation, son histoire et sa réception. Tenu à Fribourg en Octobre 2015, le troisième colloque international de l’Institut Dominique Barthélemy entendait rassembler quelques spécialistes du texte du Lévitique pour avancer dans la recherche sur ces différents sujets. Les études rassemblées dans ce volume reflètent le vaste champ de recherche sur ce livre biblique. Elles touchent à la manière dont le Lévitique apparaît dans les témoins textuels, notamment les manuscrits de la Mer Morte, le Texte Massorétique, le Pentateuque Samaritain et la Septante. Elles abordent également les défis de son édition hébraïque, ses relations avec d’autres livres comme Josué, Luc-Actes et Flavius Josèphe et enfin les enjeux de sa traduction française.

Book SynopsisThe book of Micah provides insight into the struggle of a prophet with his vocation in an extremely difficult time. The aggressive policies of Neo-Assyrian kings which involved large-scale destruction, deportation and resettlement upturned existing social structures everywhere. Kings of Judah like Ahaz and Hezekiah had to compromise with the enemy to retain their position. Micah denounced their overindulgence. Initially, the results of his efforts were disappointing and one may certainly say that Micah was a tragic figure who towards the end of his life felt he had been a failed prophet. It is no coincidence that in the Hebrew Bible Micah 3:12 occupies the middle of the whole book of the Twelve “Minor” Prophets. In this verse Micah courageously announced the destruction of the temple on Zion because of Jerusalem’s sins -- more than a hundred years before it actually happened. His contemporaries had ridiculed him because they did not believe God would ever allow the destruction of his holy abode. Whistleblowers are never popular and it is possible that Micah has had to pay with his life for his scathing criticism of the authorities. However, history proved him right and Micah’s impressive sermons inspired later generations to complement them with consoling messages of forgiveness and hope. Prophecy, also prophecy outside Israel, was always open to future expansion. In this way the book of Micah became a cherished source of messianic expectations among both Jews and Christians. Modern research into the book of Micah denies him the authorship of more than half of the chapters attributed to him. On the basis of new textual and archaeological data from the entire Ancient Near East this commentary argues that much more can be regarded as actual fire-and-brimstone preaching of the historical prophet Micah. This conclusion was achieved among other things by collating more than a hundred Hebrew manuscripts of the book of Micah. The commentary devotes also much attention to geology, climate, flora, fauna, agriculture and art. Fifty illustrations elucidate these realia.

Book SynopsisFrom time immemorial scribes provided their manuscripts with visual markings guiding the reader to the interpretation they deemed correct. Colour, punctuation and empty spaces were their first distinctive layout markers. Later on elaborate ornaments, capitals and headers adorned the beginning of books, chapters and paragraphs. All these helpful pointers are also present in manuscripts and prints of the Bible. Their influence is evident in the reception history of the Scriptures as codified in translations and commentaries. Strangely enough, however, they are almost totally ignored in modern biblical scholarship. To remedy this gap Pericope series was started twenty years ago. The present volume provides insight in what has been achieved in the relatively young discipline of delimitation criticism up till now. Through a dozen contributions, the biblical and patristic corpuses are investigated in several directions: How were the texts delimited in Antiquity? What intentions can be discerned behind delimitations in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Syriac Bibles? Book SynopsisLe Cantique n’est pas un conglomérat d’une cinquantaine de petits chants d’amour. C’est une composition savamment architecturée, même si elle ne se laisse pas découvrir facilement. Le livre est ici analysé à tous les niveaux de son organisation, selon les procédures de l’analyse rhétorique biblique, désormais bien établies et reconnues. Cette composition allie la plus grande simplicité et l’élaboration la plus poussée. Toutefois, si la connaissance de sa composition est indispensable pour mieux comprendre un tel texte, elle ne suffit pas. Il faut aussi saisir les rapports qu’il tisse avec d’autres livres de la Bible, rapports d’ordre typologique. Il représente d’abord une relecture du récit d’origine, les amants du Cantique étant l’antitype du premier couple ; ils établissent en effet un dialogue que n’avaient pas su instaurer Adam et Ève. Le Cantique est aussi en rapport étroit avec les textes des prophètes de l’exil qui présentent les rapports entre Dieu et son peuple comme alliance matrimoniale. Le même filon se poursuit dans le Nouveau Testament où le Christ se lie d’amour pour l’Église, jusqu’aux noces de l’Agneau et de la Jérusalem céleste avec lesquelles s’achève, dans l’Apocalypse, la Bible chrétienne. Ainsi, se trouve dépassée l’opposition classique entre lecture naturaliste ou érotique et lecture spiritualiste ou allégorique. L’interprétation qui voit dans le Cantique à la fois, et indissociablement, un chant d’amour entre l’homme et la femme et entre Dieu et son peuple, n’est pas le fait d’une lecture seconde, indument ajoutée par les générations postérieures à celle de l’auteur. Elle se laisse reconnaitre dans le texte lui-même. Le sens spirituel fait partie intégrante du sens littéral. L’amour entre l’homme et la femme est de même nature que l’amour entre Dieu et les hommes.

Book SynopsisChère à Luther, qui l’appelait sa « petite fiancée », la Lettre aux Galates est, malgré sa brièveté, un texte majeur, décisif pour la foi chrétienne. Beaucoup sont d’avis que cette lettre a été écrite sous le coup de la passion. On a même parlé de rhétorique tellement enflammée qu’elle serait « portée au rouge ». Il ne conviendrait donc pas de chercher un ordre rigoureux dans cet écrit de circonstance. D’autres ont pu rétorquer au contraire qu’il ne s’agit tout de même pas d’un e-mail ! Depuis plus de cinquante ans la Lettre aux Galates est devenue le champ privilégié de l’application aux textes bibliques des règles de la rhétorique classique gréco-latine. Certains pensent y reconnaitre un écrit de genre judiciaire, d’autres de genre délibératif, d’autres encore de genre démonstratif ; sans compter ceux qui penchent du côté de l’épistolographie antique. Le présent commentaire part d’un autre présupposé. Bien que né à Tarse, où fleurissaient les écoles de rhétorique, Paul était juif avant tout, formé à Jérusalem où il dit avoir grandi, aux pieds de Rabbi Gamaliel. Il est donc sans doute de meilleure méthode de chercher à découvrir la composition de ses lettres non pas à Athènes, mais dans ce qui faisait la substance de sa culture, la Bible, avec les lois spécifiques qui la caractérisent. Ainsi, la thèse essentielle de la Lettre, la « proposition », ne se trouve pas au début de la lettre, comme le veut la rhétorique classique, mais en plein centre de la section centrale, comme clé de voûte, et donc de lecture, de l’ensemble de l’écrit. Paul suit en cela une des lois les plus fondamentales et les mieux établies de la rhétorique biblique et sémitique. L’interprétation de la Lettre, soutenue aussi par l’étude du contexte biblique, s’en trouve par conséquent notablement renouvelée.

Le récit de la Passion et de la Résurrection de Jésus par lequel ils s’achèvent sont à leur tour le roc sur lequel les évangiles sont bâtis. C’est dire l’importance de ces textes. Les quatre « séquences » de la Pâque — Testament, Jugement, Exécution et Résurrection — sont ici analysées et interprétées suivant les lois de composition propres aux textes bibliques, celles de la rhétorique sémitique. Se dessinent ainsi de grandes fresques où chacun des épisodes prend forme et sens dans ses relations avec les autres. L’étude du contexte biblique permet de voir comment les personnages de la Pâque sont situés dans la ligne des grandes figures du Premier Testament. Jésus y est en effet présenté sous les traits du nouvel Adam, d’Abel le juste, de l’Époux du Cantique des Cantiques, du Serviteur tel que l’avaient annoncé le prophète Isaïe et les Psaumes. À côté de la femme au parfum de Béthanie, nouvelle Ève et Épouse du Cantique, apparaissent aussi d’autres figures, telle celle de Caïn, meurtrier de son frère. L’étude est aussi « synoptique » : aux principaux niveaux d’organisation du texte, elle met en regard d’abord Matthieu et Marc, puis Luc et les deux premiers évangiles. Cette comparaison synoptique ne s’arrête pas aux détails de style, mais s’attache surtout aux phénomènes de composition qui donnent à chacun leur architecture spécifique. Ce qui est essentiel pour saisir le message respectif de chaque évangéliste. Apparaissent ainsi trois portraits de Jésus, semblables et différents, complémentaires. Pour Matthieu, qui écrit dans et pour des communautés formées essentiellement de juifs devenus disciples du Ressuscité, Jésus est présenté sous les traits du Serviteur souffrant d’Isaïe qui se révèle à la fin l’aîné d’une multitude de frères. Pour Marc, qui s’adresse à une église où se mêlent juifs et non juifs, Jésus est le Maître de ses disciples, devenu par sa résurrection Seigneur de l’univers. Pour Luc enfin, l’évangéliste des chrétiens d’origine païenne, Jésus est dépeint comme le Roi d’Israël, Christ de Dieu annoncé par les Écritures juives. Cette nouvelle édition est enrichie d’un double appendice sur « Circoncision et croix du Christ », et sur « Circoncision, croix du Christ et vie consacrée ».

Book SynopsisThe Song of Songs is a theological work in its literal sense. For centuries this was recognized by the overwhelming majority of its readers. Yet, in the argument of this study the Song is neither an allegory of divine-human love, nor a mere human love song. Rather, by adopting a symbolic language, the Song is able to express the realities of divine love in and through human love, thereby giving full expression to both dimensions. In order to substantiate and advance this view, this study introduces a new hermeneutical refinement into the discussion, giving careful consideration to different orders of textual meaning (i.e. “metaphor”, “allegory”, and “symbol”) in order to better understand what precisely we mean in speaking of the sensus literalis. The success of this symbolic approach owes much to its diachronic method. In particular, it is able to assimilate a redactional analysis of the Song’s composition in which the personage of Solomon plays a remarkable and increasingly significant role (i.e. “Solomonic Redaction”). This prominence of Israel’s legendary king is plotted within an identifiable ancient Near Eastern royal ideology marked by an unmistakably religious orientation. This ideology in turn opens the door to a phenomenology of the kingship symbol by which certain aporias are resolved and the poetics of the text recover their full force.

Book SynopsisFruit d’une longue histoire qui remonte au moins à la moitié du XVIIIe siècle et, de la part de son auteur, d’une cinquantaine d’années de recherches et d’analyses de textes, aussi bien de l’Ancien Testament que du Nouveau, cet ouvrage expose de façon systématique et approfondie les principes de la rhétorique biblique. Appartenant à l’aire culturelle du monde sémitique, celle-ci se distingue de la rhétorique gréco-latine, dont l’Occident moderne est l’héritier direct. Pourtant, elle ne s’applique pas seulement aux textes rédigés en hébreu ou en araméen, mais aussi aux livres grecs de l’Ancien et du Nouveau Testament. La connaissance des lois de cette rhétorique spécifique est indispensable pour mieux comprendre les écrits bibliques. Le Traité se développe en trois parties : Composition, Contexte, Interprétation. Dans la première sont exposés les rapports entre tous les éléments linguistiques utilisés pour construire les textes, ensuite les niveaux successifs de leur organisation, puis les figures de composition et enfin les règles de réécriture. La partie consacrée au contexte s’intéresse d’abord à l’intratexte, et davantage encore aux rapports intertextuels, avant que soit étudiée la fonction du centre des compositions concentriques et proposées des règles de réécriture pour les textes synoptiques. La troisième partie montre d’abord l’utilité de la rhétorique biblique pour l’établissement du texte, sa traduction, ses divisions et sa ponctuation. Sont ensuite exposées les cinq règles herméneutiques qui permettent d’interpréter les textes à partir de leur composition. Puis c’est le rôle de l’intertextualité souvent déterminante pour les éclairer. La partie s’achève par une réflexion sur le don de l’interprétation. Cette troisième édition a été allégée de ses chapitres extrêmes : l’« Historique » est disponible sur le site de la RBS, les « Perspectives » sont désormais en partie dépassées et largement mieux connues ; ont aussi été économisés plusieurs exemples qui n’étaient pas indispensables. En revanche, le volume a été amplifié par l’exposé des découvertes récentes et par des approfondissements — en particulier pour l’intertextualité — rendus nécessaires pour des raisons avant tout pédagogiques.

Book SynopsisCes exercices s’appuient sur le Traité de rhétorique biblique de R. Meynet. Le Traité est une sorte de grammaire et chacun sait qu’on n’apprend pas une langue en lisant ou même en apprenant par cœur des règles de grammaire : il y faut un patient entrainement qui requiert de nombreux exercices. Beaucoup sont intéressés par l’analyse rhétorique biblique et par les résultats qu’elle permet d’obtenir pour mieux comprendre les textes bibliques ; un certain nombre ne se contente pas de cela mais voudrait utiliser eux-mêmes la méthodologie. Comme tout métier, un sérieux apprentissage est nécessaire. L’idéal serait de s’entrainer sous la direction d’un maitre compétent qui puisse suivre le travail de l’apprenti, le conseiller et le corriger quand cela est nécessaire. Le présent livre s’offre comme un guide, comme un maitre. Ce sont d’abord une série d’exercices, organisés en deux niveaux : celui du passage (ou de la « péricope »), puis celui de la « séquence » ou ensemble structuré de passages. Le texte à analyser est donné dans la langue originale et dans une traduction très littérale ; quelques conseils suivent, en particulier de lire et d’étudier telle ou telle partie du Traité qui sera indispensable pour l’exercice en question ; enfin toute une série de questions doivent permettre à l’apprenant, s’il le désire, d’être amené à trouver par lui-même comment le texte est composé. Dans la seconde partie sont données les « solutions » des exercices. Y est suivi, pas à pas, le chemin proposé par les questions des exercices. Ces solutions permettent à l’apprenant de vérifier son propre travail. Ce livre d’Exercices n’est pas un livre à lire, mais à écrire. Se contenter – comme quelqu’un pourrait en être tenté – de lire les solutions, avant d’avoir fait l’exercice, ne servirait pas à grand-chose pour celui qui désire non pas accumuler des connaissances, mais apprendre à travailler, ce qui n’est pas – et de loin – la même chose. Cette deuxième édition a permis non seulement de corriger les erreurs, mais aussi de remplacer quelque exercice par un nouveau plus approprié. Par ailleurs, les couleurs devraient aider à un meilleur apprentissage.

It shows that, first of all pneuma, as long as it can be traced from three passages in antithesis with sarks (1 Tim 3:16; 1 Pet 3:18,22 and Rom 1:3-4) reflecting the Christian theology prior to the early New Testament writings, referred to the spiritual condition to which Christ had access as a result of his resurrection, in contrast to his previous earthly condition. Then in a more in-depth examination of Rom 1:4 from the angle of identifiable redactions, it continues to show how the passage/transition from this representation of the pneuma-condition to that of the pneuma (Spirit) designating the Holy Spirit took place.

Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Ansatzes zieht diese Untersuchung Erkenntnisse aus der experimentellen Gedächtnispsychologie heran, die zeigen, dass Erzählungen in auswendigen Reproduktionen in aller Regel nicht anwachsen, sondern durch das Auslassen von nebensächlichen Textinformationen gekürzt werden. Als nebensächliche Textinformationen identifizierten die experimentellen Untersuchungen u.a. Angaben zum Ort, zur Zeit, zu den Personen, zu den Objekten und zu einem Ereignis oder Geschehen in Form von adverbialen Bestimmungen. Vergleicht man die inhaltlichen Überhänge der synoptischen Parallelperikopen mit den in auswendigen Reproduktionen ausgelassenen nebensächlichen Textinformationen, dann ergibt sich, dass 90% der inhaltlichen Überhänge aus gedächtnispsychologischer Perspektive durch Kürzungen in einer vom menschlichen Gedächtnis getragenen Überlieferung erklärt werden können. Daher ist für die Geschichte der synoptischen Jesusüberlieferung eine Kürzungstendenz viel wahrscheinlicher als ein Wachstumsprozess oder gar die Wirksamkeit eines Wachstumsgesetzes.

Written in Hebrew and being one of the seven documents found in the late forties of the 20th century it has attracted much attention from a host of scholars. It is not a biblical manuscript, but a document written sometime in the second century B.C.E. in Palestine, and has been read and studied in the Qumran community as we can conclude that as many as ten fragments of the document were subsequently unearthed in another Qumran cave. Because of its contents the document was sometimes called the constitution of the community. The document also throws much light on aspects of the post-biblical Hebrew. Its Hebrew, certainly reflecting Biblical Hebrew, is not merely an imitation of it. In addition, two much shorter documents, though not part of 1QS, but affiliated with it in their contents, have been included: Rule of the Congregation (1QSa) and Rule of Benedictions (1QSb). This monograph presents the entire text, largely based on a recent edition of Prof. Qimron (2020), accompanied by an English translation of our own and a linguistic and text-critical commentary. Studies published in Modern Hebrew have been consulted.

Book SynopsisOne aspect of the ecclesiological renewal at Vatican II that has not received much scholarly attention so far is the doctrine of the “elements of the church” (elementa ecclesiae), previously unheard of in Roman Catholic magisterial documents. This book offers an original and comprehensive study of this notion and how it became part of the official teaching of the Roman Catholic church. Using a historical-theological approach, the author studies the origins and evolution of the concept of the “elements of the church” and gives a nuanced understanding of this doctrine as outlined in Lumen gentium § 8 and Unitatis redintegratio § 3. In this way, the author offers a renewed insight into the evolution of the position of the Roman Catholic church “in oecumenicis” during and in the aftermath of Vatican II. The development sketched in the book is characterized by a double perspective. On the one hand, there is the debate about the frontiers of the church that focuses on the relationship between the Roman Catholic church and the church of Christ. On the other hand, and closely related to the first aspect, there is the issue of the recognition of “ecclesial” elements in non-Catholic Christian communities. Both threads are closely interwoven and it is important to understand the relationship if one wants to do justice to the doctrinal balance and complexity of Vatican II’s ecumenical ecclesiology. Taking these two aspects together, one should readily acknowledge the shift that typifies Roman Catholic ecclesiology from a juridical approach to the question of defining the Roman Catholic church’s frontiers over against the outside world – and a fortiori over against other Christian denominations – towards a sacramental approach to Roman Catholic ecclesiology in which the notions of sacramentality and mystery are foundational. Along with this new approach came a renewed attention for a Christ-centred ecclesiology and a recognition of the activity and work of the Spirit outside the Roman Catholic church. All of these aspects are touched upon in this book. The author has studied original documentation in a number of archives. The book thus offers a detailed reconstruction of textual evolutions and highlights the role played by Catholic and non-Catholic theologians who have helped shape contemporary ecclesiological thought. Among the participants there are also students, especially PhD students, in particular of the Department of Biblical Theology at our Faculty of Theology. Here, this view is challenged by considerations about YHWH’s powers on the storm and a reanalysis of Psalm 29, including a comparative examination of the three possible expressions of the voice of YHWH (storm, volcanism, and metallurgy); a whole-psalm analysis of its structure, content and literary developments; and the meaning of five songs (Psalms 46, 96-98, 114) conditioned by it. This analysis identifies Psalm 29 as a pre-Israelite, Qenite song promoting a metallurgical relationship with YHWH, and praising him as the ‘Lord of mabbul’ (=revitalization). Its content unveils the Qenite Yahwism and its enduring influence in Israel. The conditioned psalms express how this song contributed to the evolution of the Israelite religion, especially the transformation of YHWH into the ‘Lord of Justice’ in Psalms 96-98 and the Isaiah theology.

Book SynopsisThere is a long-standing consensus that Solomon's prayer in 1 Kings 8 characterizes YHWH as having been 'relocated' to heaven and therefore no longer present in the temple. This study is the first sustained attempt to challenge that view. It does so by focusing on a hitherto overlooked collocation within the chapter, and concludes that the prayer portrays YHWH as being present both in heaven and in the building. Such a finding inevitably has consequences for wider issues involving divine presence both within and beyond the confines of 1 Kings 8. These include a cluster of ideas traced to the large central section of the chapter and involving a purely transcendent Deity, a (semi-)independent divine "name" inhabiting the sanctuary and an effectively desacralized temple. All three, together with the scholarly construct known as Name Theology, are called into question if YHWH is indeed represented as being localized within the temple.

Book Synopsis The second book of the Psalter, like the first, third and fifth books, forms a highly elaborate composition. Indeed, not only each of its thirty psalms is well composed, but also each of the “sequences” that bring out two or three psalms; and finally, the five “sections” arranged in a concentric manner around the five psalms “in a low voice” (Ps 56–60). Two complementary movements form and animate the entire second book. On the one hand, evil and violence are everywhere, as are enemies. First of all, they are those from outside, pagan peoples who trample on Israel; but the psalmist later discovers that enemies from within are no less violent, and that violence comes even from his closest friends, those in whom he puts all his trust. Sin, that has always been rooted in the depths of their hearts, marks all human beings. Its most pernicious form is a “lie” which, like the lion and the viper, hides itself to attack more effectively. It is certainly no coincidence that “the serpent” is mentioned right at the centre of the central section, reminding us of the deadly venom of the serpent at the beginning which was injected into the whole of humanity. On the other hand, salvation is meant for all those who trust in God, in his faithfulness and in his truth. Hence the thanksgiving that resounds throughout the book, right to the end. It resounds not only in the mouth of the people of Israel, saved by God, but also on the lips of all the other peoples; the pagan nations, who are bringing gifts to the Temple, lifting up their hands in prayer to the one God, who is King of all the earth. They, who at the beginning of the book were presented as the enemies and oppressors of the chosen people, will join Israel at the end of the book in the same blessing promised to Abraham: “By your offspring shall all the nations of the earth blessed themselves” (Gen 22:18).

Envoyé d’abord à l’Ecole biblique de Jérusalem, il partit à Louvain faire son doctorat qui fut publié en 1986 dans les Études bibliques collection dont il fut ensuite le directeur, comme des Cahiers de la Revue biblique, pour des longues années. Son enseignement à l’École et dans plusieurs autres institutions académiques lui valut nombre d’honneurs et la nomination en 2008 à la Commission Biblique Pontificale. Après une vie de recherche, d’enseignement et de publications il est décédé peu avant l’aube du 15 juin 2017. Le présent volume est dédié à sa mémoire et contient des études prophétiques, historiques et épigraphiques de ses frères, collègues, étudiants et amis.

Book Synopsis The third book of the Psalter is considerably shorter than the first book and especially than the fifth book. Nevertheless, its seventeen psalms form a composition which is not at all inferior to that of the other two books. The general tone of the book is extremely dark. There are only complaints, supplications and anguished questions: “Why?”, “How long?” And the answers given to these questions do not seem to console the unfortunate. If they are in distress and anguish, it is their fault. They pay the price for their sins (Ps 78 & Ps 89). Having betrayed the covenant at the time of the exodus, having repeated it at the time of the Davidic monarchy, they are now left to the violence and oppression of their enemies. The voice of the Servant is heard crying out at the centre of the first book: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps 22:2). However, Ps 22 does not end in the grave. The psalmist is saved from the lion’s mouth and can say: “I will recount your name to my brothers, and in the midst of the assembly I will praise you” (22:23) and even: “all the families of the nations will bow down before you” (22:28). Likewise, there are three psalms in the third book where praise resounds, each of them is found in a strategic position. At the centre of the first sequence of the initial section (Ps 75) with all his people the psalmist gives thanks seeing that the Lord is pronouncing judgment on the arrogant and he rejoices that soon he will be able to cut off their horns. At the centre of the central section (Ps 81), a fervent call to praise celebrating the exodus from Egypt precedes a lengthy speech by God promising new liberation from the present enemies and their conversion. Finally, at the centre of the first sequence of the final section, David in his misery and lament confirms the conversion of the Gentiles: “All the nations which you have made will come and will bow down to your face, O Lord, and will give glory to your name” (86:9). Like the servant in Ps 22, the people and their king had to pass through death so that the light of revelation could reach all the ends of the earth.

Plongée dans les évangiles canoniques, singulièrement, mais également dans tous les textes anciens qui parlent de Jésus, bien que non retenus dans le canon chrétien des Écritures. Sources littéraires donc. Mais qui sont nées dans un contexte particulier, principalement celui de la Galilée du premier siècle. D'où l'importance, spécialement, de ce que l'archéologie permet de dire de la situation sociale de la Galilée de Jésus, au début du premier siècle. En un sens, les études de cet ouvrage appartiennent donc aux querelles infligées à la mémoire et à l'histoire de Jésus. Elles reflètent les débats de plus de quarante années de recherche autour du Jésus historique; débats, si l'on veut, de la troisième quête, amorcée au début des années 1980, et dont elles présentent, en somme, une certaine histoire.

Book Synopsis Avec ses quatre chapitres, le livre de Ruth est un des plus courts de la Bible. C’est aussi un des plus aimés et des plus commentés. Il raconte comment une étrangère est devenue l’arrière-grand-mère du roi David. Selon toute vraisemblance, cette histoire aurait été écrite en réaction contre la politique de purification ethnique d’Esdras et Néhémie qui, au retour d’exil, avaient exigé que les juifs renvoient leurs épouses étrangères. Après 2 500 ans, ce livre ne manque donc pas d’être très actuel. La composition de cet écrit n’est pas spéculaire (ABB’A’), comme une très large majorité des commentateurs le prétend. Elle est concentrique, comme tant d’autres textes bibliques et sémitiques. Le point focal de la construction est le moment où Noémi, la belle-mère de Ruth, apprend que l’homme qui a si bien accueilli Ruth venue glaner dans son champ, s’appelle Boaz : c’est un proche parent, un de ceux qui ont le droit et le devoir de les « racheter ». Le récit bascule alors vers une solution qui mettra fin au veuvage de Ruth et débouchera sur la naissance d’un fils, Obed, le grand-père de David. Une même attitude est commune à chacun des quatre personnages majeurs de cette nouvelle : la discrétion, le retrait qui attend que l’autre manifeste son désir avant d’y répondre et de s’engager. Respect d’autrui, de sa liberté et de sa dignité. Telle est la conduite de Noémi, de Ruth sa belle-fille, de Boaz aussi qui finira par épouser Ruth, accueillant son désir de donner un fils et héritier à son mari défunt. Telle est aussi la conduite du Dieu d’Israël, qui ne s’impose pas, laisse toute sa place aux hommes, tout en se tenant prêt à intervenir quand il le faudra et qu’ils en auront manifesté le désir.

Book SynopsisBased on the view that Proverbs 1-9 constitutes an introduction to the collections of sayings that follow in the rest of the book, this volume comments on the sub-section in Proverbs 10-15. It proceeds from the standpoint that the individual proverbs are self-contained units but that they have not been lumped together randomly. Occasionally edited proverb-clusters are identified and commented upon. The primary interest remains the individual proverb, but where clusters are identified, these are taken seriously. The openness of proverbs for different readings in different situations and its implications for the role of readers receive careful consideration. Attention is paid to grammatical and stylistic features, including the rhythmic organisation, as well as ANE parallels and the versions. In line with the policy of HCOT, the reception of each proverb in the rabbinic, patristic and occasionally in early Reformation traditions is sketched.

Book Synopsis The composition of the fourth book is in no way inferior to that of the other four books already analysed. Its three major sections, each containing five psalms, are organised in a concentric fashion; they are linked by two short sections which constitute the focal points of the ellipse that the whole book draws. The extreme sections are related. The first section (Ps 90–94) describes “the fate of the children of Adam”, the last one (Ps 102–106) “the fate of the children of Israel”. All are subject to the law of human affliction. They are like the grass that flourishes in the morning and withers and dries up in the evening; and sin accompanies frailty. As the refuge of humanity from generation to generation, the Lord saves people by satisfying those who fear him for many days and by assuring his faithfulness to the children of their children, from age to age. Despite their repeated unfaithfulness, God does not grow weary of forgiving them. The central section (Ps 96–100) stands out from the rest of the book, which it overshadows. All peoples are called to come to Jerusalem to worship the King of the universe and to bless him who has saved the chosen people from among all the families of the earth. Carried by the promise of the one God and by the hope of the one people, this invitation is situated on the unattained, but always desired eschatological horizon. The focal points of the ellipsis (Ps 95 and Ps 101) are the key to reading the book. The first one focuses on a wish addressed to humans: “Today if you would only listen to his voice” (Ps 95:7). The second one poses a question to God: “When will you come to me?” (Ps 101:2). Therefore, the whole fourth book is captured in this tension between God’s desire and human desire, each going to meet the other, in a “today” whose fragility places every human being between the morning when the grass flourishes and the evening when it dries up, between the time of the fathers, which the last section evokes at length, the time of sin and forgiveness, and the time of salvation and of the end, which the central section contemplates.

Book SynopsisLa construction du Pentateuque manifeste l’identité anti-égyptienne d’Israël en s’appuyant sur l’élément fondateur qu’est la sortie d’Égypte. En compensation, le cycle de Joseph présuppose des rapports moins conflictuels avec l’Égypte. Le peuple d’Israël est sauvé de la famine par les Égyptiens. De ce fait, l’identité exodique du peuple d’Israël est mise en question par le cycle de Joseph anti-exodique. Par ailleurs, il ressort que les deux chapitres, Gn 38 et Gn 49, n’entrent pas naturellement dans le cadre de l’histoire du personnage de Joseph. Ils se rapportent à un autre personnage – Juda – et leur intérêt réside dans l’évocation de Canaan. Or, ils expriment deux visions totalement différentes du personnage de Juda : Gn 38 contient une critique de la réticence de ce dernier à entrer en relation avec les étrangers, alors que Gn 49 se concentre sur les douze fils d’Israël, parmi lesquels Juda prend une place prééminente. Gn 38, comme histoire de Joseph en Égypte (Gn 39* et les chapitres suivants), prône l’ouverture aux étrangers. Au contraire, Gn 49 met l’accent sur l’identité spécifique d’Israël. Ces deux chapitres se présentent comme une relecture du cycle de Joseph effectuée à un moment particulier de l’histoire d’Israël, probablement entre la conquête de l’Égypte par l’Empire perse (VIe à Ve s. av. J.-C.) et la perte de contrôle de celle-ci (première moitié du IVe s. av. J.-C.). Cette relecture portant sur l’insertion du cycle de Joseph dans le Pentateuque permet de cerner et d’interpréter l’opposition de ces deux courants théologiques : ouverture à l’étranger et identité spécifique d’Israël.
