Criticism and exegesis of sacred texts Books

Peeters Publishers Biblical Greek in Context: Essays in Honour of
Book SynopsisReconsideration of the nature of the Greek attested in both the Septuagint and the New Testament has focussed in the past century on its place within the history of Greek. A central facet of the work of John Lee has been to demonstrate that biblical Greek is contemporary Koine, comparable to that found in inscriptions and papyri, and that it can be positioned within the history of the language. These essays honour him in considering various aspects of biblical Greek within its context. Lexicography is discussed in the light of particular 'Jewish Greek' features, the role of context for semantics, and the use of Modern Greek in lexicons. Septuagint translation techniques involving transliterations, loan-words, and ethnic terminology, and the grammatical topics of deponency and verbal aspect, are all analysed. The importance of papyri and numismatic evidence is highlighted, while the material witnessess of doublets in the manuscript tradition and of later Jewish versions represented in the Cairo Genizah and in marginal glosses are also examined.

Peeters Publishers Texts and Contexts of Jeremiah: The Exegesis of
Book SynopsisBased on the examples of Jeremiah 1 and 10, this volume contains contributions of the textual reception and of the exegesis of both chapters. Although textual history and reception history are to be distinguished from each other, they are interconnected, as the textual history of any biblical book is also part of its reception history. Jeremiah 1 and 10 are ideal "test cases" because their textual traditions (MT-Jer and LXX-Jer and its Hebrew Vorlage respectively) differ most significantly in terms of rhetoric, structure and content. The volume demonstrates how the Jeremiah's reception history helps to better understand the textual history of both chapters.

Peeters Publishers Oh God of Battles! Steal My Soldier's Hearts! :
Book SynopsisThis volume represents a comparative analysis of the Greek and Hebrew text forms of Jer 10:1-18. The Hebrew text’s ancient battle hymn has been transformed by the Greek text form (and Qumran’s 4Q71) into an apotropaic incantation against evil spirits. The two text forms of chapter 10 hinge upon the interpretation of verse 11. Does one find exorcistic magic in the obscure Aramaic words? Or, can one make sense of Jeremiah’s enigmatic condemnation of idolatry in the Hebrew text form’s more elaborate arrangement? We shall see that Masoretic text’s organization proves to evidence a more ancient poetic tone and structure in comparison to the Septuagint’s modified content.

Peeters Publishers The Books of Samuel: Stories - History -
Book SynopsisThe Books of Samuel are an important source for the history of ancient Israel and a treasure not only of Biblical literature, but of world literature. They deal with the first kings of Israel and the history of the 10th century BCE in Palestine, and they narrate of this time in an outstandingly artful way. In addition they set standards in the Biblical Jewish and Christian system of values, concerning the relationship between men and God, nation and people, power and law, war and peace, man and woman. The Books of Samuel have left their impact upon the arts over the centuries so that their reception history is exceptionally rich. Both early interpreters and modern scholars have discussed nearly every aspect of them. This volume contains contributions of leading scholars in the field as well as those of a new generation of exegetes. Questions are raised concerning the value of the Books of Samuel as historical source, the nature of their historical narrative, their literary composition, their literary-historical growth, their textual development (in the Masoretic text, in the Greek Septuagint, and in the writings of Qumran) and their reception history (in novels, music and arts). The volume embraces a wide range of approaches and methods and sheds light on a great number of texts and themes. Thus it represents the current state of inquiry and also raises new questions and views.

Peeters Publishers Miracle Tradition, Rhetoric, and the Synoptic
Book SynopsisThis study examines the relative plausibility of three contemporary synoptic gospel source-critical hypotheses, namely the Two-Document Hypothesis (2DH), the Two-Gospel Hypothesis (2GH), and the Farrer Hypothesis (FH). Specific attention is paid to the implied redaction of the Gospel miracle traditions, which are evaluated through the lens of first-century Greco-Roman biographical and narrative rhetorical conventions. The influence of such conventions is first demonstrated in the known adaptations of two first-century writers, namely Josephus and Plutarch. The same conventions are then used to assess the relative redactional plausibility of the three synoptic hypotheses, first in relation to the implied order and selection of miracle traditions, then in relation to narrative adaptations in three specific miracle pericopes. While the cumulative evidence clearly points to the greater plausibility of the Markan Priority hypotheses over against the 2GH, neither the 2DH nor FH was demonstrably more plausible than the other.

Peeters Publishers Interpreting the Song of Songs - Literal or
Book SynopsisThe Song of Songs is one of the most often interpreted books of the Bible. Through the ages interpreters have agreed that it is a highly poetic piece of literature, but their interpretations have differed fundamentally. After a centuries-long consensus that the Song must be interpreted allegorically as reflecting the relationship of God and humans and a shorter consensus that the Song must be interpreted literally as a composition of profane love lyrics, the discussion in recent years has once again become more controversial, as a growing number of exegetes have been more open to theological interpretations. This volume offers contibutions that take different stands in this newly inflamed discussion. It thus enables readers to further think about the question and come to their own conclusions.

Peeters Publishers Insights into Editing in the Hebrew Bible and the
Book SynopsisDocumented evidence has shown that the Hebrew Bible was edited by successive scribes for centuries, and the impact of editing on the resulting text has proven to be crucial. A better understanding of any issue in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel requires a deep understanding of the editorial processes. As a consequence, the editorial processes of the Hebrew Bible have come to the fore in the most recent scholarly debates. Nevertheless, editorial processes in the Hebrew Bible are still poorly understood and a methodological overview is lacking. It is apparent that collaboration between scholars of different fields is needed, and a methodological discussion that takes into account all the editorial techniques witnessed by documented evidence in the Hebrew scriptures and the rest of the ancient Near East is required. This book is a step in this direction. Contributions in this volume by leading scholars approach the issue from various perspectives, including methodology, textual criticism, redaction criticism, Dead Sea Scrolls, Assyriology, and Egyptology.

Peeters Publishers The Rationale for Aniconism in the Old Testament:
Book Synopsis“Why does the Old Testament reject idolatry?” is a question that might be asked by both academics and others. Although many people may be satisfied with a simple answer, the scholarly community continues to grapple with this question. Scholarly works have looked at Israelite aniconism (the rejection of idolatry) using evolutionary, sociological and theological approaches, but they have not paid much attention to explaining its rationale in the Old Testament (OT). The present work fills this gap by examining selected OT texts. The thesis of this work is that the OT rejects idolatry because of the incompatibility between the aniconic deity (Yahweh) and “idol” on the one hand and between the status of Israel and “idol” on the other hand. Here the word “idol” is used for something that is intended to represent Yahweh and/or other gods in the religions of Ancient West Asia (AWA).

Peeters Publishers Ausgewählte Studien zum Johannesevangelium.
Book SynopsisThis volume contains English and German articles of Michael Labahn on the Gospel of John. The 17 articles are grouped under four headings: Reports of research, Interpreting John in the context of the Old Testament and history of ancient religions, Studies in major Johannine topics, and Studies in individual texts. The volume presents the most relevant and groundbreaking articles of Labahn which cover a wide range of approaches and address many subjects. The articles illustrate Labahn’s approach for integrating methods and meanings, a typical feature of most of his work. Furthermore, it is one of his intentions to read the Gospel of John as an integral part of nascent Christianity, hence developing its own peculiar interpretation of Jesus as the son of God and giver of life. Labahn’s often inspiring essays yield valuable new insights and have been well received in the scholarly community. This collection brings together into one volume articles that had been published in various places but have a thematic and theological coherence.

One can wonder how a passage addressing people’s hair or headdress – and as it seems mostly women’s – at prayer meetings can be relevant nowadays. This difficult passage (1 Co 11:2-16) has been read either as a proof of Paul’s sexism or as promoting women’s liberation. The author has tried to read this text rigourously, without any preconceived bias in as much as it is possible, to elucidate the meaning behind its many obscure words and expressions. This rather modest goal required taking into account the whole text, without leaving aside any controversial part, as well as trying to grasp its context and ecclesial dimension. Distinguishing within the text its sections where Paul tries to promote specific practices and those articulating the principles or arguments used to justify them, has revealed two distinct lines of arguments. Those show, as well as Paul’s pastoral stance, his positive attitude towards the role of women.

The topic of this book has often been a subject of scholarly debate in the last sixty years: the nature and literary genre of pesher. In fact, pesher has regularly been defined in relation to midrash, not only on account of the interpretative and explanatory approaches supposedly shared but also because the term midrash is found in pesher 4QFlor. The present volume analyses the primary and secondary characteristics of the literary genre of pesher. This type of literature involves a specific understanding (binah) of the Scriptures, while at the same time offering itself as a channel of a certain revelation, which the writer makes his own by means of the hermeneutical and historiographical traditions of the community. The interpretative principle of pesher, in dealing with contemporary reality, achieves that synthesis of interpretation and revelation, illustrated by the frequently used formula “the interpretation of the Word for the end of days.” We may say, therefore, that this interpretative principle and the community tradition are two key characteristics that more than other elements set pesher apart as an independent literary genre, to be distinguished from midrash and from other forms of interpretation.

Peeters Publishers Marriage Metaphor and Feminine Imagery in Jer
Book SynopsisJer 2:1-4:2 is a locus classicus of the prophetic marriage metaphor, which describes the turbulent relationship between Israel and her God. The literary form of the Book of Jeremiah preserved in the Septuagint (LXX) invites a new diachronic study of this text. The systematic, comparative study of the LXX and the Hebrew (MT) makes up a substantial part of the present book (ca. 200 pages). The redaction-critical reconstruction follows the literary form thus retrieved. The edition preserved in the MT introduces the marriage metaphor where the earlier text used general feminine imagery, or suggested rather a filial relationship. The inspiration for the revision came from the Books of Hosea and Ezekiel. The interpretations specific to the translator of the LXX do not point to any coherent agenda. The earliest passages clearly applying the marriage metaphor were introduced at the latest stages of the redaction history. Their results demonstrate the growing importance of the marriage metaphor, as well as the ancient editors’ conviction about the unity and interconnection of the books which make up the Bible.

Peeters Publishers Facing Abraham: Seven Readings of Søren
Book SynopsisSøren Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling is a classic in both theology and philosophy alike. In what is probably his most well-known book, Denmark’s most famous philosopher muses, through his pseudonym Johannes de Silentio, about the Akedah story, the story within the book of Genesis which recounts Abraham’s binding of his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God. This collection brings together seven essays that read Fear and Trembling as a classic, that is: as a work that can speak meaningfully to people in different places and at different times, and that can be read fruitfully from within a diversity of theoretical frameworks and approaches. Fear and Trembling is linked here, not only with other important philosophers, such as Adorno, Heidegger and Westphal, but it is also related to the so-called “non-metaphysical” approach to Hegel and to the debate on the “ethics of belief”. Questions are raised about Fear and Trembling and religious diversity, historical criticism, and authorial intent, and the work is approached from within poetry (Erik Johan Stagnelius) and drama (Paul Claudel), but also from within one contributor’s personal experiences with theological education. In this way, the seven contributions brought together in the present book offer something of a panoramic view on Fear and Trembling, a view that may inspire to either turn or return to Kierkegaard’s most famous book, and let oneself, for the first time or once more, be challenged, disturbed, and maybe even repelled by this text that reflects on a father that is, or at least seems, willing to sacrifice his only son because God ordered him to do so.

Book SynopsisThe present volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium of the Leuven Centre for the Study of the Gospels which was dedicated to various aspects of Luke’s writings that all have to do with his knowledge of the world he is describing in his work. The symposium studied a number of topics relating to the social world of earliest Christianity. Contributors had been asked to address, if relevant, (1) the history of research for the theme that had been assigned to them, (2) recent developments in assessing the relationship between Gospel and Acts and the dating of both works, and (3) the implications that can be drawn from studying the evidence of Luke-Acts for reconstructing the life-world of the first Christian communities. Contributors include Giovanni Bazzana, Mark Bilby, Michelle Christian, Jens Herzer, John Kloppenborg, Manfred Lang, Markus Oehler, Thomas Phillips, Dieter Roth, Dan Smith, and Arjan Zuiderhoek.

Avec des textes de Normand Bonneau, Yvan Bourquin, Jacques Descreux, Eleni Di Pede, Alain Gignac, Jean-Daniel Macchi, Yvan Mathieu, Ai Nguyen Chi, Sylvie Patron, David M. Book SynopsisIn past decades the Book of Ben Sira, also known as Ecclesiasticus, has attracted a great deal of scholarly attention, both in its different Hebrew and Greek versions, as well as in its Syriac and Latin form. This volume opens with a quick overview of two much discussed topics. Is Ben Sira supposed to be a priest? And in what way does Ben Sira correlate Wisdom and Torah? It is followed by a section in which specific passages are studied. It contains texts relating to Lady Wisdom, the Patriarchs, Elijah, Ben Sira’s rereading of the primeval narratives. The next part is an inquiry into Ben Sira’s use of books from the Hebrew Bible in process of formation and his view of some major theological notions from Deuteronomistic heritage. The last section covers topics such as apocalypticism, friendship, Philo and Ben Sira, Augustine’s sermons on Ben Sira, and a striking type of intertextuality discovered in this writing.

The outline grammar should not take up more than ten class hours. The passages, a total of nine, are both in prose and verse. Each passage is annotated with constant references to appropriate sections of the outline grammar. This annotation goes far beyond a mere parsing of forms and glossing. The author wishes to believe that he has offered here and there some original ideas. A number of paradigms are attached and several simple exercises with keys. The book concludes with a simple glossary.

Peeters Publishers Jacob of Serugh's Hexaemeron
Book SynopsisA fifth-sixth century clergyman-cum-theologian, Jacob of Serugh (also spelled Sarug), was an extremely prolific writer. Not counting a number of works in prose, he is said to have written nearly 800 homilies, mostly on themes of theological import or biblical stories and personalities. These homilies are composed in metre: each line has twelve vowels. So far less than 150 such homilies have been edited and/or translated. Hexaemeron is an exposition of the first six days of the universe. Jacob dedicated an extra homily to the sabbath, making a total of seven homilies. This genre was known earlier in Greek. Jacob's is the first of the kind in Syriac. Currently the only complete text of Jacob's Hexaemeron is available in an edition by Bedjan (1905-10), but with no translation. This is the first time that this highly interesting work is made available in its entirety, accompanied by an English translation. The editor studies six complete manuscripts and one containing only two homilies. None of these seven manuscrips was available to Bedjan, and one of them is presumably as old as the principal manuscript used by Bedjan.

Every odd year the «International Society for the Study of Biblical and Semitic Rhetoric» organizes a conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). It’s a great opportunity for scholars specialized in this specific field of exegesis to expound the results of their research and compare them with others. Also students participate, especially PhD students, in particular of the Department of biblical theology of our Faculty of theology. The largest part of the conference is devoted to analysis of texts, especially of the Bible — Old and New Testament —, but also of other Semitic texts such as the Koran, even other texts widely influenced by biblical texts, such as the Rule of St. Benedict. There are also methodological reflections, to deepen some aspect of our exegetical methodology.

Peeters Publishers New Perspectives on the Book of Revelation
Book SynopsisThis volume contains the proceedings of the 64th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July 23-25, 2015) which dealt with the state of the question in research on the book of Revelation and the exploration of new perspectives and methods. Many interpretive issues continue to be contested, such as the genre of the work. Is it an apocalypse, a letter, or a book of prophecy? If it is all of these, how do the apocalyptic, epistolary, and prophetic elements work together? Certain classic or well established approaches to the book of Revelation, such as the use of Scripture, the genre, establishing the text, and its peculiar Greek were assessed. But also newer approaches were represented, explored, and taken further, for example, the construction of time and space in the work, theological issues raised by the work (such as individual predestination), ethical issues (violence), and various aspects of the history of interpretation, reception, lecture, and Wirkungsgeschichte. Challenges in the interpretation of images and symbols were addressed, both from an historical critical point of view and in relation to the dependence of results on the scholarly approach selected by the interpreter.

Peeters Publishers Le Psautier.

Book SynopsisThe author presents a reedition of the Qumran Canticles scrolls, demonstrating that turn-of-the-era 4QCanta,b contain variant recensions of Canticles, substantively shorter than the Masoretic text. Many textual variants display earlier and more original readings, suggesting that Canticles was finalized only around the turn of the era. The archaeology of post-exilic Judea, Perea, and Jerusalem is brought in dialogue with the texts. The Hasmonean Jewish kingdom, rapidly expanding from 112 B.C.E., is suggested as historical background for the growing collection of love songs, some toponyms only giving meaning in this period. The capital of the new Jewish state allowed more open relations between men and women and stimulated a land romanticism reflected in many songs. In this milieu Jerusalem scribes collected and edited human love songs and coloured them with allusions to biblical texts, thereby inviting a symbolic (double) reading: both on earthly love and the relation between God and his people.

Peeters Publishers Textual Boundaries in the Bible: Their Impact on
Book SynopsisWhen turning up a newspaper, headlines immediately draw attention to the subjects the editorial staff deemed most important. Headings of chapters and paragraphs in a book help to understand the structure of the work. Indentation and punctuation steer our interpretation in many unobtrusive ways. Few people realize that these tricks to promote a particular understanding of a written document were invented thousands of years ago in the world of the Bible. The series Pericope is praised for its introduction of the innovative method of delimitation criticism in biblical scholarship. This volume contains contributions on text division in ancient manuscripts and modern Bible translations (examples from Genesis, Numbers, Samuel, Hosea, Micah, Isaiah, Song of Songs, Ezra and Romans). Layout often clarifies a writer's intention, but is sometimes used to force an interpretation on the reader that is clearly incompatible with the writer's goals. Required reading for translators as well as readers of the Bible!

Peeters Publishers Multiple Teachers in Biblical Texts
Book SynopsisOn the one hand there is a hot discussion on learning nowadays. On the other hand, in theological research, the interest in initiation and mystagogy as an ongoing process of learning, has been studied for the past decades: the initiated one is taught and he/she is therefore part of a teacher-disciple-process. This evokes the question whether relations and communication, especially between teacher and pupil, can be found in the Bible as well. Either implicitly or explicitly, the roles of teacher and disciple are a part of biblical traditions, although often neglected in biblical exegesis. This volume explores the roles of teacher and disciple from a textual perspective. Various biblical texts from the Torah, the Psalms, the Prophets, the Wisdom Literature, the Gospels, and the Letters as well as the Rabbinic Literature are dealt with. A reflection on religious teachers from the perspective of biblical teaching and discipleship concludes this volume.

Peeters Publishers Hosea: The Word of the Lord that Happened to
Book SynopsisAccording to the Talmud, “four prophets prophesied in one age and the greatest of all of them was Hosea.” The Book of Hosea is in fact a key to the Hebrew Bible, a unique witness to the antiquity of Scripture, as it offers a number of the oldest testimonies to various traditions, such as the Exodus, the Decalogue, as well as patriarchal legends such as the cycle of Jacob. But Hosea is much more than a deposit of ancient traditions. Hosea’s prophecy harbors phrases that have transformed the image of God forever, such as “I desire kindness and not sacrifice and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings” (Hos 6:6), or “My heart has turned against me together — my consolations have been kindled. I will not do the heat of my anger. […] For I myself am God and not man” (Hos 11:8cd-9ac). Far from the immobile first mover of Greek philosophy, this is the heart of a passionate God who pours out his feelings that are turned upside down with humanity in these inspired pages. For the first time the four great versions in which this Word has gone through the centuries — the Masoretic text, the Septuagint, the Vulgate and the Peshitta — have been collated and meticulously translated into English on a same page. This is accompanied by a wealth of annotations that allow one to hear echoes throughout various periods, confessions and disciplines, from textual criticism to films, as well as Jewish and Christian traditions, literature, painting and music.

The Psalter constitutes a collection of texts from different periods and with various preoccupations. We can distinguish some psalms that have an independent origin, before the construction of our current Psalter, and some literary psalms linked with the constitution of the Psalter. An intermediary stage was the constitution of some collections, with the Davidic psalters, the Coreitic psalter, and the Asaphite psalter. The constitution of the Davidic psalters has a link with the overall structuring of the Psalter around the hope placed in the Davidic Messiah. This aspect has enabled psalms with very different perspectives to be incorporated within the framework of the messianic issue, by the use of “titles” which generally infer some verbal connections with the Books of Samuel. The final drafting of the Psalter must be understood on the basis of an inclusion system. The central part of the Psalter, which is fundamental to the messianic issue, even if the word “Messiah” is never used, is made up of the Elohistic psalter, Ps 42-83, an artificial yet highly symbolic construction with the use of the number 42. After the disappearance of the Davidic Messiah (Ps 89) and his replacement by the priestly Messiah (Ps 84,10), the alliance with the patriarchs take the place of the alliance with David (Ps 105). In the end, David is reinstated as founder of the temple cult, in relation to the transfer of the arch to Jerusalem. One final wise piece of editing has not modified the structuring of the Psalter.

Peeters Publishers The Role of Mothers in the Genealogical Lists of
Book SynopsisThis work demonstrates that the genealogy of Jacob/Israel was singular and based on the rankings of the four mothers Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah. These positions remained in the memory even as the power of various tribes changed over time, guiding the sequenicing of names within the lists. For this reason, the different presentations of the genealogy are not indicative of different Sitz im Leben and do not aid in reconstruction of Israel’s early history. A secondary yet equally important discovery is that mothers continue to hold importance beyond the Genesis narrative. This work adds to the growing evidence that mothers in particular, and women in general are vital contributors to their families, to the Promise and to the advancement of the theological message of the Hebrew Bible.

Peeters Publishers The Spirit Helps our Weakness : Rom 8:26a in
Book Synopsis“The Spirit Helps Our Weakness” examines the fundamental question of how precisely the Spirit aids the weakness of believers. After an initial discussion on the way Rom 8,26-27 has been interpreted, the study explores the central issues and conclusions in scholarship on the Romans debate. Building upon that scholarship, this study contends that Paul’s purpose in writing the letter revolved around a missiological imperative, which permeates the letter. The second part of the work provides an exegetical analysis of Rom 8,26a, including the way in which the clause fits within its broader context, particularly within vv. 26-27. In light of Paul’s missiological motivation, this study argues that the Spirit serves as activating agent to accomplish God’s mission. Ultimately, the missiological nature of the Spirit, working within believers, underlines the priority for Paul’s ministry and by extension, his purpose for writing the Letter to the Romans.

Peeters Publishers The Hebrew Bible of Josephus: Main Features
Book SynopsisIn his major work, the Jewish Antiquities, Josephus gives a history of his people in Greek. He begins with the Bible, and after it he collects other source till his own time. The work was published in 93, under emperor Domitian, but unfortunately the Biblical part is a paraphrase, not an accurate translation, and it has often been thought that it was merely a loose adaptation of a previous Greek translation. However, this study offers a minute comparison with other ancient Biblical texts known to us in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek. The general conclusion is that he used only a Hebrew source, which has some af-finities with several Qumran fragments. Beyond many little details, one can see that for some books, especially Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, the copies he used were quite differ-ent from the canonical forms.
