  • Engaging Children in Family Therapy

Taylor & Francis Ltd Engaging Children in Family Therapy

Book SynopsisA common question at the initial meeting of a family therapist and a new client(s) is often whether or not to include a child or children in the counseling sessions. The inclusion of a child in the family therapy process often changes the dynamic between client and therapist -- and between the clients themselves -- within the context of the counseling sessions. And yet, although this is such a common experience, many counselors and family therapists are not adequately equipped to advise parents on whether to include a child in therapy sessions. Once the child does make an appearance in the counseling session, the therapist is faced with the challenges inherent in caring for a child, in addition to many concerns due to the unique circumstance of the structured therapy. Counseling a child in the context of a family therapy session is a specific skill that has not received the attention that it deserves. This book is intended as a guide for both novice and experienced counselors aTrade Review"Bravo to Catherine Sori and her colleagues for proving a rich conceptual and practical multi-modal approach in this volume! Experts from social work, clinical psychotherapy, neuroscience, social psychology, and health respond to one of seven central case examples to help readers understand the dynamics within each partner, as well as within the couple as a system and within a broader cultural context. Contributors cover critical and emerging topics like cybersex, emotional well-being, forgiveness, military couples, developmental trauma, and more, making it a must-have for practitioners as well as graduate students.Trade Review“Jennifer Fitzgerald has put together a very special book about couple therapy. Forty-five prominent sets of experts on couples and couple therapy each focus on a specific body of research which they apply to inform treatment suggestions for seven model cases. The result is a highly accessible view of the research about couples and couple therapy in a uniquely engaging format that covers almost all the important topics in the field. This is what a book that presents evidence based practice should be: Firmly rooted in scientific findings, yet highly engaging. I strongly recommend this book for every couple therapist and student of couple therapy.”—Jay Lebow, PhD, ABPP, clinical professor, The Family Institute at Northwestern, Northwestern University; editor, Family Process “A goldmine of research-based information on a wide range of approaches to therapy with distressed couples. Approaches discussed include attachment, communication, cognition, caregiving, conflict, emotion, forgiveness, and many more across 46 chapters written by scholars from around the world. The book covers both basic relationship processes (attachment, cognitions, communication, and intimacy) along with common issues that lead couples to therapy (infidelity, parenting, and sexuality). With chapters from leaders in the field from a variety of backgrounds and orientations, this book offers a comprehensive perspective on how to conceptualize and intervene with couples. Without question, the strategies in this book saved our marriage!"--John and Sarah H. "If an affair has left you feeling devastated, this book can put you on a path toward healing by providing hope, direction, and clarity. The second edition takes an already classic resource and makes it even better for couples with diverse backgrounds and types of relationships. This is the book that I recommend to anyone struggling with infidelity."--Anthony L. Chambers, PhD, ABPP, former president, American Academy of Couple and Family Psychology "A powerful book for any couple dealing with the aftershocks of an affair. This is an indispensable guide to managing painful emotions and making sense of the chaos. When you are experiencing an unbearable sense of aloneness, this book helps you find a way to and feel heard, seen, and, ultimately, understood."--Rhonda Goldman, PhD, Department of Clinical Psychology, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology "Thoughtful, compassionate, and practical. The authors take you through the key phases of both discovering and recovering from infidelity. Whether you have been injured by an affair or have engaged in one, you should read this book."--Andrew Christensen, PhD, coauthor of Reconcilable Differences "The second edition of this exceptional book is the best resource available on the topic. The authors are top experts who have decades of practical experience with couples. I recommend this book to everyone struggling to navigate the vortex of an affair and come out the other side to a better life."--William J. Doherty, PhD, author of Take Back Your Marriage “A standard in our field.”--Eli Karam, PhD, LMFT, host of the AAMFT Podcast -A comprehensive self-help text for couples or individuals experiencing an affair. Both the injured partner and the participating partner are specifically addressed with thought-provoking inquiries into their experiences....An underlying theme of hope is written into the entire book. (on the first edition)--Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy, 09/01/2007ƒƒA treasure-trove of clinical wisdom firmly informed by a bedrock of clinical research. The three authors are leading couple researchers that exemplify the scientist–practitioner model of clinical psychology....The book is clearly written as a stand-alone self-help book, but could easily be used as an adjunct to therapy....A deeply compassionate book, as the authors have clearly worked hard to distill their collective clinical and research wisdom to help couples working through the aftermath of an affair. We will be using it in our own teaching and work with couples and highly recommend it to therapists and couples alike. (on the first edition)--The Family Psychologist, 10/01/2007ƒƒ[The authors] have designed a program to help couples overcome an affair, understand why it happened, and consider their best options. A particularly helpful chapter supplies suggestions for talking to children, family members, and friends....Full of case studies and examples for applying the information; recommended. (on the first edition)--Library Journal, 09/01/2007ƒƒInformative in helping to further understand some of the issues faced by people who might have been affected by an affair. As a stand-alone program for anyone attempting to make sense of what might be happening to them after an affair has been disclosed, this book would be helpful to both the 'participating partner' and 'injured partner.' It would also be a useful adjunct to working therapeutically with couples and could supplement a therapeutic program. I would recommend this book to anyone working with couple relationships and indeed to any couple I may encounter who are going though or have experienced an affair. Regret can be immobilizing, filling us with disappointment and shame--but it also can be a powerful tool for self-knowledge and change. In this uplifting guide, renowned psychologist Robert Leahy demonstrates how to make regret work to your advantage. Downloadable practical tools help you implement the strategies in the book. You are the author of your life, so go out and write the next chapter--and then live it.Trade Review"Our culture tells us to idolize those who live with no regrets, but we might as well celebrate those who put their fingers in their ears! We cannot learn from the past without facing our mistakes. This wise and well-written book will help you do exactly that--without getting tangled up in 'woulda, coulda, shoulda.'"--Steven C. Hayes, PhD, author of A Liberated Mind "Dr. Leahy took me on a sensitive and detailed exploration of my own regrets, hesitations, and difficulties with making decisions and evaluating risks. He shows how to liberate yourself from negativity and turn it into energy for growth. A thoroughly enjoyable book, laced with humor and very useful. I will refer back to it often."--David F., Dover-Foxcroft, Maine "Regret can defeat us—or it can be a platform for increasing courage, wisdom, and self-acceptance. In this easy-to-understand book, one of the world’s leading cognitive therapists skillfully guides us to come to terms with the setbacks and disappointments of life. Dr. Leahy combines his vast clinical experience with many clarifying examples. You won't regret reading this book!"--Paul Gilbert, PhD, FBPsS, OBE, author of The Compassionate Mind "This book is for you if you are haunted by regrets that keep you awake at night. This book is uniquely innovative, insightful, clearheaded, and comprehensible. It is packed with examples and practical guidance that can transform regret from a debilitating state to a productive way of living."--David A. Clark, PhD, coauthor of The Anxiety and Worry Workbook "All too often, regret leads us down a negative spiral of thoughts and emotions. In this inviting book, Dr. Leahy presents strategies to use regret as a force for problem solving and change, rather than letting it disrupt your life."--Patricia A. Resick, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Duke University "Dr. Leahy has done it again! This superb book provides answers to important questions. How do we deal with past decisions that come back to haunt us? When does regret hold us back and how can it help us move forward? I highly recommend this book. It just might change your life."--Stefan G. Hofmann, PhD, author of The Anxiety Skills Workbook "It is easy to oversimplify regret as a problem that only dampens our happiness. This highly readable book maps out a broader story. We can’t avoid regret entirely, but we can change the way we think about it. Dr. Leahy illuminates how regret comes about, how we can gain some control over it, and even how to harness it as a tool for learning and growth. Everybody has regrets—and everybody will find something useful in this book."--George A. Bonanno, PhD, author of The End of Trauma "We all find ourselves, at one time or another, experiencing regret. Too often, regret traps us in destructive self-loathing and cycles of rumination about 'what might have been.' Grounded in science, this brilliant book guides us on how regret can be a valuable tool for personal growth. Dr. Leahy, a psychologist and renowned author, weaves his extensive clinical experience with the science to gently and skillfully guide us through how we get stuck in regret and how to unstick ourselves. This wonderful guide, rich with real-life examples, is an invaluable resource for us all."--Allison G. Harvey, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley "Dr. Leahy is a master clinician, and it shows. His writing on this timeless topic is both illuminating and useful. This book is not only a practical go-to for those struggling with regret, it is also a sage guide to life's problems in general."--Thomas E. Joiner, PhD, The Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Florida State University-It is fantastic, and I love it!...This book…is a tour de force and a highly charming read….The book is written for a broad audience and would be readily appreciated by any layperson, friend, colleague, or patient. In addition to being an excellent review of the phenomenon of regrets, it is also a distillation of Leahy's unmatched knowledge of cognitive behavior therapy. It presents a theory that is modern, integrative, and, most importantly, full of heart….My favorite part of the book is that while it is educative, it is also focused on taking action and making change….This book would be helpful both for people who are currently having difficulty making decisions for fear of regret or individuals who are struggling with challenges related to past regrets. I can already think of several folks in my caseload who would benefit from this book, and I am so happy that Leahy wrote it. • Continuing Bonds: New Understandings of Grief

Taylor & Francis Inc Continuing Bonds: New Understandings of Grief

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.Table of ContentsPart 1 Examining the Dominant Model; Chapter 1 Introduction: What’s the Problem?, Phyllis R. • Culture Centers in Higher Education: Perspectives

Taylor & Francis Inc Culture Centers in Higher Education: Perspectives

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAre cultural centers ethnic enclaves of segregation, or safe havens that provide minority students with social support that promotes persistence and retention?Though Black cultural centers boast a 40-year history, there is much misinformation about them and the ethnic counterparts to which they gave rise. Moreover, little is known about their historical roots, current status, and future prospects. The literature has largely ignored the various culture center models, and the role that such centers play in the experiences of college students. This book fills a significant void in the research on ethnic minority cultural centers, offers the historic background to their establishment and development, considers the circumstances that led to their creation, examines the roles they play on campus, explores their impact on retention and campus climate, and provides guidelines for their management in the light of current issues and future directions. In the first part of this volume, the contributors provide perspectives on culture centers from the point of view of various racial/ethnic identity groups, Latina/o, Asian, American Indian, and African American. Part II offers theoretical perspectives that frame the role of culture centers from the point of view of critical race theory, student development theory, and a social justice framework. Part III focuses specifically on administrative and practice-oriented themes, addressing such issues as the relative merits of full- and part-time staff, of race/ethnic specific as opposed to multicultural centers, relations with the outside community, and integration with academic and student affairs to support the mission of the institution. For administrators and student affairs educators who are unfamiliar with these facilities, and want to support an increasingly diverse student body, this book situates such centers within the overall strategy of improving campus climate, and makes the case for sustaining them. Where none as yet exist, this book offers a rationale and blueprint for creating such centers. For leaders of culture centers this book constitutes a valuable tool for assessing their viability, improving their performance, and ensuring their future relevance – all considerations of increased importance when budgets and resources are strained. This book also provides a foundation for researchers interested in further investigating the role of these centers in higher education.Trade Review"This book makes a unique contribution to the higher education literature by thoroughly exploring culture centers. Although the research on cultural centers and their effect on predominantly White Institutions is minimal, Patton should be applauded for her effort to shed light on their importance. This is truly a "must read" for institutional leaders, student affairs practitioners, and graduate students who want to work as faculty or administrators in the field of higher education."Mona Davenport, Director of Minority Affairs, Eastern Illinois UniversityThe Review of Higher Education"Patton has produced a text "to offer an in-depth understanding of culture centers and their role in higher eduction" (p. xiv). The contributing authors include noteworthy scholars, emerging scholars, and practitioners who bring their professional experiences and expertise to bear on the topic at hand. This combination of rich theoretical and practical perspectives strengthens the book... Patton and her contributing authors do an excellent job of enhancing knowledge of the role and purpose of multicultural and race-specific culture centers on campus, as well as advocating for specific changes in practice to maintain their vital role in social justice work. This text joins a growing group of new publications on issues of campus diversity and inclusion and the role of specific administrative units in shaping and strengthening those efforts."Journal of College Student Development"Writings on black, Latino, Asian-American and American Indian cultural centers on campuses; also includes administrative and theoretical takes on the topic."The Chronicle of Higher Education“Lori Patton’s book is stunning! It has closed the decades-long absence of a definitive compilation to inform Culture Center communities as they function in American Higher Education. As many colleges and universities struggle with issues of recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, this work provides a splendid blueprint for the development of Culture Centers for years to come."Willena Kimpson Price, Director African American Cultural Center, University of Connecticut, Storrs“Culture Centers in Higher Education documents in one volume how ethnic and cultural centers have served as places and spaces where those who have been under-represented in higher education have survived and flourished at predominantly white institutions. Throughout it documents how these centers honor and validate cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and inspire academic excellence and achievement among students without their having to lose cultural identity or values. The writers also speak to the future of cultural centers as places where multicultural centers will also have a place in order to ensure true pluralism on our campuses. As our nation becomes increasingly diverse, these centers serve as models of social justice and thus this book is a must read for all who want to ensure that their institution provides environments that exude academic success and achieve graduation for all students with their soul and identity whole.”Mildred García, President, California State University, Dominguez Hills“Dr. Lori Patton and colleagues put flesh on bones here as they make a strong case for campus-based culture centers in the lives of the racially underrepresented students they serve. Through theoretical, organizational, administrative, and programming models these authors survey the evolving landscape of cultural practices intent on celebrating and supporting the identities of multicultural students. A compelling and provocative front-line treatment of the topic, from those whose lives have spoken and those whose words have made a difference, this is a resourceful compendium for anyone committed to the diversification of the 21st century campus.”Carney Strange, author of Educating by Design and ProfessorBowling Green State University“Culture Centers in Higher Education helps to fill a major void in higher education scholarship. It offers insight and evidence as to the importance of student culture centers as both sanctuaries and sites of resistance. Lori Patton has done a remarkable job of pulling together a range of thoughtful and skilled authors. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in better understanding the challenges of race and ethnicity on U.S. campuses and the importance culture centers play in the lives of students.”Robert RhoadsUCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies“Why do students need cultural centers in the 21st century? Haven’t we moved past dividing into separate racial and ethnic groups? Given what we know about the origins and history of student cultural centers it seems appropriate to have a volume that looks across a variety of perspectives of cultural centers and asks hard questions about their utility, viability, and sustainability in difficult economic times. As editor, Lori Patton has assembled an outstanding group of scholars who bring multiple lenses to the question of the place of racial/ethnic cultural centers on the 21st century campus. This is a collection that should find a welcome home on the shelves of college and university administrators and higher education scholars alike.”Gloria Ladson-Billings, University of Wisconsin-MadisonFrom the ForewordTable of ContentsForeword—Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings Preface. Book SynopsisThis book constitutes a collection of case studies that explore issues faced by new professionals in student affairs, with the scenarios designed to develop ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies. These cases provide opportunities to create meaningful learning experiences for courses, training programs, and the mentoring of new professionals, giving them exposure to the kinds of dilemmas they will encounter as they assume their leadership roles or start out on supervisory positions. The cases are derived from interviews with current student affairs professionals, are based on real life dilemmas, reflect contemporary issues on our college campuses, and are designed to be easily used or adapted across all institutional types. The cases cover the areas of advising and helping; assessment, evaluation and research; equity, diversity, and inclusion; ethical professional practice; history, values, and philosophy; human and organizational resources; law, policy, and governance; leadership; personal foundations; and student learning and development, and vary in length to allow for multiple uses. Shorter cases can be role-played and discussed in leadership training workshops, while longer cases can be used as take-home assignments or debated during longer training sessions. The book begins with advice on how to use the cases and concludes with general advice provided by current professionals in the field.Trade Review“The authors of this publication were wise to organize the case studies in the framework of the 10 Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Practitioners developed jointly by ACPA and NASPA. • The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Tidal Model represents a significant alternative to mainstream mental health theories, emphasising how those suffering from mental health problems can benefit from taking a more active role in their own treatment. Based on extensive research, The Tidal Model charts the development of this approach, outlining the theoretical basis of the model to illustrate the benefits of a holistic model of care which promotes self-management and recovery. Clinical examples are also employed to show how, by exploring rather than ignoring a client's narrative, practitioners can encourage the individual's greater involvement in the decisions affecting their assessment and treatment. The appendices guide the reader in developing their own assessment and care plans. The Tidal Model's comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice of this model will be of great use to a range of mental health professionals and those in training in the fields of mental health nursing, social work, psychotherapy, clinical psychology and occupational therapy.Trade Review'The sheer exuberance of language, elegance of style and conviction of belief will no doubt appeal to many but I suspect that the real value of the book lies not only with its implication for immediate change in its capacity to stimulate critique and discussion concerning the purposes and future of mental health care and for that reason alone is well worth reading.' - William Whitfield, The International Journal of Psychiatric Nursing Research'This is a very readable book and makes the model acccessible for all. • Everyday White People Confront Racial and Social

Taylor & Francis Inc Everyday White People Confront Racial and Social

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile we are all familiar with the lives of prominent Black civil rights leaders, few of us have a sense of what is entailed in developing a White anti-racist identity. Few of us can name the White activists who joined the struggle against discrimination, let alone understand the complexities, stresses and contradictions of doing this work while benefiting from the privileges they enjoyed as Whites. This book fills that gap by vividly presenting – in their own words – the personal stories, experiences and reflections of fifteen prominent White anti-racists. They recount the circumstances that led them to undertake this work, describe key moments and insights along their journeys, and frankly admit their continuing lapses and mistakes. They make it clear that confronting oppression (including their own prejudices) – whether about race, sexual orientation, ability or other differences – is a lifelong process of learning. The chapters in this book are full of inspirational and lesson-rich stories about the expanding awareness of White social justice advocates and activists who grappled with their White privilege and their early socialization and decided to work against structural injustice and personal prejudice. The authors are also self-critical, questioning their motivations and commitments, and acknowledging that – as Whites and possessors of other privileged identities – they continue to benefit from White privilege even as they work against it.This is an eye-opening book for anyone who wants to understand what it means to be White and the reality of what is involved in becoming a White anti-racist and social justice advocate; is interested in the paths taken by those who have gone before; and wants to engage reflectively and critically in this difficult and important work.Contributing AuthorsWarren J. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIs higher education preparing our students for a world that is increasingly complex and volatile, and in which they will have to contend with uncertainty and ambiguity? Are we addressing the concerns of employers who complain that graduates do not possess the creative, critical thinking, and communication skills needed in the workplace? This book harnesses what we have learned from innovations in teaching, from neuroscience, experiential learning, and studies on mindfulness and personal development to transform how we deliver and create new knowledge, and indeed transform our students, developing their capacities for adaptive boundary spanning.Starting from the premise that our current linear, course-based, educational practices are frequently at odds with how our neurological system facilitates learning and personal development, the authors set out an alternative model that emphasizes a holistic approach to education that integrates mindful inquiry practice with self-authorship and the regulation of emotion as the cornerstones of learning, while demonstrating how these align with the latest discoveries in neuroscience. The book closes by offering practical ideas for implementation, showing how simple refinements in classroom and out-of-classroom experiences can create foundations for students to develop key skills that will enhance adaptive problem solving, creativity, overall wellbeing, innovation, resilience, compassion, and ultimately world peace.Co-published with ACPA – College Student Educators InternationalTrade Review“This book forced me to reconsider everything I knew about college student learning. The authors of this book suggest that the way we organize higher education to deliver learning and development is not aligned with how the neurological system facilitates that learning. To see an impact from the ways we foster learning we need to examine how we teach (in all its forms). We must find ways to help students integrate experiences and help them develop as whole beings.College student educators must create opportunities for students to make associations between what they are learning across experiences and link their cognitive learning with their psychosocial development allowing them to make neurological connections that will positively impact their ability to succeed. But, the structure of colleges and universities is not constructed to help students make these connections. In an accessible, easy-to-understand approach, the authors of The Neuroscience of Learning and Development help the reader understand the brain and neurological bases of learning. After reading this book, I felt prepared to begin transforming how I design, deliver, and evaluate student learning and development to positively impact students.”Gavin W. Henning, PresidentACPA – College Student Educators International, and Associate Professor, New England College, New Hampshire"Breakthroughs in brain science will be the major disruptive innovation in higher education. A friend and neurologist convinced me that success as a college teacher required an understanding of the developing brain's impact on capacity for learning. In turn, I regularly push Student Affairs to use Student Development theories to advance the field of learning assessment. If one believes in individual differences based on varied paths through physical and psychosocial developments (and I do), then why would we expect standardized tests administered at arbitrary points in time to work well in measuring student achievement? Marilee is spot-on with the topics in this book. I expect the volume to make a big impact."Randy L. Swing, Executive DirectorAssociation for Institutional Research"Higher education is increasingly the focus of attention as research findings about the benefits of education contrast with information about poor completion rates, equity gaps, and affordability. Business leaders and policy makers have asked whether students are learning what they need to in colleges and universities. Faculty and educational leaders who want to help their students learn and gain the credentials they need now have a helpful resource, based on current knowledge of brain functioning and how people learn, in The Neuroscience of Learning and Development: Enhancing Creativity, Compassion, Critical Thinking, and Peace in Higher Education."George R. Boggs, Ph.D., Superintendent/President Emeritus Palomar CollegePresident & CEO Emeritus, American Association of Community Colleges“Both graduates and employers continue to decry the failure of our institutions to develop the whole person, to integrate creating with ‘knowing’, and help students develop the tools for addressing the emotional as well as intellectual intelligence to handle stress, find balance, and respond to daily challenges of the their multidimensional lives. All of these tools are critical necessities to thrive in the face of the dramatically changing workplace and social context of our changing world. This book provides a compendium of tools for the inner personal and spiritual development of students as much as their intellectual development, and demonstrates in each chapter how the inner development strengthens both intellectual development and outer performance.I urge you to dive into this book at multiple points – to use the chapters of greatest interest and applicability in your work; and to consider those chapters outside your normal frame of reference to see how they can contribute to rounding out your own and your students’ development. It is worth the effort and the challenge – and the results, as reflected throughout the book – are demonstrable.”Ralph Wolff, J.D.Former President, Western Association of Schools and Colleges"The right book at the right time. This timely and well-constructed book addresses a vital issue facing higher education today; the need to increase critical thinking, communication, creativity, and resilience for today's college graduates. Drawing on neuroscience research and the exploration of innovations in teaching and learning, this book explores exciting new approaches to improve the outcomes of the college experience. There is really nothing like this in the higher education literature - very impressive.”Kevin Kruger, PresidentNASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher EducationAs a practitioner of non-violence, I have been exposed to and adopted principles of mindfulness in many aspects of my life. I find it difficult to consistently practice in higher education association management; however, I am convinced that the principles of change, moving from a present state to a transition state to a desired state, are best applied when adopted by people who practice mindfulness. Bresciani Ludvik challenges us to co-create a new vision in the large and complex ecosystem of American higher education by combining the neuroscience of mindfulness methodology with systemic methods to navigate whole-systems change. This is a fascinating and provocative read that I highly recommend to my colleagues.Cynthia H. Love, Ed.D.“We have known from decades of previous research that one’s ability to manage stress and well-being significantly impacts one’s ability to develop and learn. The way in which the authors posit ideas for how we can re-design, deliver, and evaluate higher education with this research in “mind” is compelling. This book provides practical evidence-based suggestions for fostering the type of learning and development that our stakeholders seek, and are asking us to provide.”Dr. Chukuka S. Enwemeka, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic AffairsSan Diego State University"It has been almost twenty years since How People Learn summarized initial insights from the new discipline of cognitive science, but these insights have up to now not been turned into practical advice about how to improve teaching and learning in college. Bresciani Ludvik and her colleagues admirably remedy this situation with this far-reaching volume. Going beyond acquisition of classic content and skills proficiencies, the kinds of learning this book addresses embrace equally the development of creativity, empathy, and mindfulness, and include the importance of wellness and relaxation in sustaining mental performance. Everyone who touches students in today’s institutions—from teaching faculty to student affairs professionals—will find something to learn here."Peter T. Book SynopsisThe first edition of this book constituted a comprehensive resource for students of higher education, faculty, higher education administrators and student affairs leaders engaging with multiculturalism and diverse populations on college campuses. It was one of the first texts to gather in a single volume the related theories, assessment methods, and environmental and application issues pertinent to the study and practice of multiculturalism, while also offering approaches to enhancing multicultural programming and culturally diverse campus environments. This second edition retains the structure and vision of the first, introducing readers to the key theories and models for understanding the complexity of the students they serve, and for reflecting on their own values and motivations. It provides an array of case studies, discussion questions, examples of best practice, and recommendations about resources for use in the classroom. This edition includes a new chapter on intersectionality, updates several chapters, presents a number of new cultural frameworks and updated best practices for creating an inclusive environment for marginalized groups, and expands the third section of the book on cultural competent practice.Trade Review“The second edition sets out, successfully, to give ‘greater voice to students who are not part of the dominant cultures’. The format includes clear and succinct case studies that assist in revealing the experiences of each group of these students on college campuses. Authors include discussion questions at the end of their essays to assist in processing the material and to move the conversation forward.Arranged into three perspectival parts with substantive essays addressing ‘Awareness of Cultural Issues,’ ‘Information on Cultural Populations,’ and ‘Critical Consciousness of Cultural Competence,’ the book itself is a model of diversity and inclusion insofar as each essay can be understood as a roadmap for those who are just beginning to engage with the topic of multiculturalism on college campuses or it can serve to enrich and affirm the understandings of those who have been working in the area of student development and multiculturalism.”Reflective Teaching“This volume takes an intersectional approach to college student development by providing a thorough overview of the frameworks, applications, and assessments of multiculturalism. Across their chapters, the authors focus on student development. The bulk of their content is dedicated to racial and ethnic identity development. While a wide variety of student groups are discussed, the editors make a concerted effort to unify the distinct chapters by identifying similarities in different multicultural theories and the shared experiences of various groups of learners. Ultimately, because the book is so application-oriented (e.g., the chapters include resources like case studies, discussion questions, and implementation suggestions), it is particularly useful for student affairs professionals and practitioners. The editors and chapter authors do an excellent job of setting up the theoretical foundations of student development models by defining intersectionality, multiculturalism, and multicultural identity. Multiculturalism on Campus is an especially useful resource for practitioners in these challenging times as higher education institutions continue to wrestle with creating inclusive and affirming campus environments for their increasingly diverse student bodies.”Teachers College Record"This book advances our ability as educators to create inclusive campus communities by first providing information about critical issues and developmental processes for key college student populations, and then providing case studies and discussion questions. The focus on developing critical consciousness is especially powerful as it moves the conversation on diversity beyond mere inclusion to a more substantive dialogue on social justice, action, and identifying and challenging systemic privilege and racism on our college campuses."Ebelia Hernández, Chancellor's Scholar - Associate Professor, Department of Educational PsychologyRutgers University"In two words: impressively comprehensive. New professionals and seasoned administrators alike will find much that is useful in the second edition of this book. The editors have again assembled a dynamic constellation of scholars who offer rich insights into the texture and substance of multiculturalism on contemporary college campuses. Anyone who aspires to become a more culturally competent and responsive educator should read this text.”Shaun R. Book SynopsisIn this book, the authors bring together in one place essential information about college students in the US in the 21st century. Synthesizing existing research and theory, they present an introduction to studying student characteristics, college choice and enrollment patterns, institutional types and environments, student learning, persistence, and outcomes of college.Substantially revised and updated, this new edition addresses contemporary and anticipated student demographics and enrollment patterns, a wide variety of campus environments (such as residential, commuter, online, hybrid), and a range of outcomes including learning, development, and achievement. The book is organized around Alexander Astin’s Inputs-Environment-Outputs (I-E-O) framework. Student demographics, college preparation, and enrollment patterns are the "inputs." Transition to college and campus environments are the substance of the "environment." The "outputs" are student development, learning, and retention/persistence/completion.The authors build on this foundation by providing relevant contemporary information and analysis of students, environments, and outcomes. They also provide strategies for readers to project forward in anticipation of higher education trends in a world where understanding "college students in the United States" is an ongoing project. By consolidating foundational and new research and theory on college students, their experiences, and college outcomes in the US, the book provides knowledge to inform policies, programs, curriculum and practice. As a starting point for those who seek a foundational understanding of the diversity of students and institutions in the US, the book includes discussion points, learning activities, and further resources for exploring the topics in each chapter.Trade Review"True to its purpose, College Students in the United States provides foundational information about college student diversity accessible to new and experienced higher education scholars and practitioners. Every college and university student success initiative that strives to be evidence-based and data-informed should take advantage of this comprehensive and concise synthesis of research framed by a classic assessment model to ensure their efforts truly make a difference for all students."Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director, Center for Postsecondary Research - Indiana University Bloomington"This updated text deepens our understanding of college students in the United States, for example, the authors’ inclusion of digital/screen time on learning and internet accessibility. Their inclusion of the pandemic, racial/social justice movement, and understanding of multiple identities and intersections are vital as they will have lasting implications on higher education."Stephanie J. Waterman, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Student Development/Student Services Stream, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education - University of Toronto"The second edition of College Students in the United States provides new and updated information about processes that affect students. From choosing where to attend to retention strategies at the institution, this book provides both theoretical and practical information to help administrators and those studying higher education. Each chapter ends with implications for students, institutions, and policy – making the material informative and useful to various levels of expertise, including college students while in college."Vasti Torres, Professor and Chair, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies - Indiana University Bloomington"Using an anti-deficit framework that resists seeing college students as problems in need of fixing, College Students in the United States is a timely read. The authors emphasize that students are not monolithic and leave readers with a wealth of knowledge about the different environments in which college students are situated. The hallmarks of the book are the discussion questions and learning activities at the conclusion of each chapter, providing readers with a generous roadmap for supporting 21st-century college students."Stephen John Quaye, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Studies - The Ohio State UniversityTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments Part One: Inputs 1. • Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Innovative Therapeutic Life Story Work:

Book SynopsisLife story work is an approach designed to enable traumatized children to explore, question and understand the past events of their lives. It aims to secure their future by strengthening attachment with their carers and providing the opportunity to develop a healthy sense of self and a feeling of wellbeing. This new edited volume documents innovative ways in which life story work has been developed. It draws on the work of nine life story centres based around the world and provides understanding and guidance for those working with children who have experienced trauma. The book illustrates current theory and practice and looks at how the approach is being used in a variety of settings including schools, intensive services, youth justice, and post-adoption support, highlighting its versatility. The importance of trauma-informed practice when working with vulnerable children is emphasised throughout, to help practitioners provide the best for the children in their care.Trade ReviewInnovative therapeutic life story work explores a highly creative way of working, safely, compassionately and effectively with the most painful aspects of children's life stories. It is a must for any child professional wanting to help traumatised children make sense of their lives, and see the connection between what has happened to them in the past and how they experience themselves and others now. Through moving case material and a wealth of practical ideas, practitioners from all over the world, convey the child's sheer relief at having at last found their voice and established a coherent narrative for their lives. -- Dr Margot Sunderland Director of Education and Training, The Centre for Child Mental Health LondonThis latest book by Richard Rose and colleagues reflects the essence of therapeutic life story work, whereby the worker holds out one hand to the child and the other hand to the carer and says to the child 'show us your world.' Something very special happens when a child takes your hand in trust when crossing the road and this is a tough road to cross. In this book, Richard and colleagues show us the world of therapeutic life story work and what it looks, feels and sounds like, so we too can help children make this journey of discovery. -- Annette Jackson - Regional Director Berry Street Gippsland, Australia (Adj Assoc Professor La Trobe University)My initial hope - that I would be able to learn from this book about how life story work is best used - has definitely been fulfilled. But, in addition to that, where young people have not had the opportunity to write their life stories, in a way that is meaningful to them, I can now confidently help them to work through this process and gain deeper insight. I would recommend this book to anyone working with young people who may have experienced some form of trauma and now seek to understand this more fully. -- Trisha Packer, counsellor and supervisor * BACP - Children, Young people & families *I recommend this comprehensive study as essential reading for practitioners across the world working with children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and very commonly experience feelings of self-blame and shame. Book SynopsisBeing able to offer support to the bereaved is an important part of many frontline professions, such as nurses, teachers, funeral directors and anything in between. Yet very little theoretical information about grief has filtered down into mainstream knowledge, and what has is often misinterpreted. Giving an accessible introduction to modern day grief theory, this book is the perfect guide to grief for counsellors, anyone wishing to support the bereaved, or the griever curious to how their grief works. Debunking commonly believed myths with information on how grief can vary from person to person, advice on communicating with the bereaved and details on the different kinds of grief, this book is an essential read for anyone working with the bereaved.Trade ReviewFor all grief workers - practitioners, volunteers, friends and family - Caroline's narrative is a light to guide us through what can be the dark and confusing landscape of grief. -- from the Foreword, Dr Jennifer Dayes, Counselling PsychologistCaroline Lloyd has written a definitive guide to grief and grieving. By explaining the history of grief and the cultural and political impact on how we grieve, the book gives a useful social context for how we grieve today. Importantly the book also explains the origin of many of the myths surrounding the grieving process, creating a space for a far better understanding of the topic. Grief is not a definable process, nor is there a right and wrong way to grieve. There is no roadmap. However this book will help those who are grieving as well as the people who are supporting them understand how to navigate and communicate through grief and how to reach out to others. -- Tracey Bleakley, CEO, Hospice UKThis book provides a comprehensive introduction to the way that grief works, as well as guidance on how to support those who are grieving. It considers what grief is, exploring the evolution of theories of grief in different social and historical contexts. The author considers whether grief is 'traumatic' or a mental health problem. Through chapters that insightfully articulate the attitudes and values that underpin our profession, being prepared and making a difference, to everyday challenges such as working in partnership with others and on into the nuance of professional practice via managing conflict and handling criticism, the essence of good social work practice is beautifully illustrated in this book. Social work is tough, but with the guidance and support in this book you can learn to tackle the challenges and thrive as a force for change.Trade ReviewA powerfully frank look at challenges in social work; this book inspires social workers to collectively work at rebuilding a culture of respect for the profession notwithstanding neoliberalism and transactional managerialism. -- Professor Kate van Heugten, University of Canterbury, New ZealandHopeful, realistic and systemic. This wonderfully accessible book invites the social work profession at both micro and macro levels to reflect on what is needed for us to continue doing the work we love, for those we serve. -- Nadia, Fran and Eugene, The Social Matters podcastI believe I speak for many social workers when I say that this book is hugely welcome and very relatable. Social work is a career like no other, highly rewarding but extremely tasking, emotionally draining, and complex. There is an automatic response to gravitate towards survival as opposed to thriving mode. I particularly loved the use of the words "Scratch" and "Beyond" to give great insights on how to survive and thrive in social work. This book provides robust enlightenment on managing stress in social work and is a must read for all social work practitioners, managers, and leaders. -- Vivian Okeze – Tirado – England Social Worker of the Year & Social Justice Advocate Gold winner 2021.
