Book SynopsisMohamed Mansour has spent his life fighting adversity. Born in Egypt in the post-war period, his childhood was halted abruptly when, aged ten, he almost lost a leg in a devastating car accident. At 18, he had to support himself through college in the US when his family's assets were seized by the Egyptian government. Aged 20, he fought cancer. Then, at 25, he returned to Egypt to help revive the fortunes of his family's once thriving business group as it steadily diversified into sectors from automobiles to construction equipment, fast food to venture capital.Almost five decades on, he and his family stand at the helm of some of the largest companies in North Africa and the Middle East. They have partnered with global brands from General Motors and Caterpillar to McDonald's and invested early in Silicon Valley successes such as Facebook, Uber and Airbnb. He also served as Egypt's Transport Minister from 2005 to 2009.Filled with hard-won wisdoms, Mohamed Mansour's inspirational story demonstrates the importance of learning from experience and never giving up in the drive to succeed.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHumanitarianism has a narrative problem. Far too often, aid to Africa is envisioned through a tale of Western heroes saving African sufferers. While labeling white savior narratives has become a familiar gesture, it doesn’t tell us much about the story as story. Humanitarian Fictions aims to understand the workings of humanitarian literature, as they engage with and critique narratives of Africa. Overlapping with but distinct from human rights, humanitarianism centers on a relationship of assistance, focusing less on rights than on needs, less on legal frameworks than moral ones, less on the problem than on the nonstate solution. Tracing the white savior narrative back to religious missionaries of the nineteenth century, Humanitarian Fiction reveals the influence of religious thought on seemingly secular institutions and uncovers a spiritual, collectivist streak in the discourse of humanity. Because the humanitarian model of care transcends the boundaries of the state, and its networks touch much of the globe, Humanitarian Fictions redraws the boundaries of literary classification based on a shared problem space rather than a shared national space. The book maps a transnational vein of Anglophone literature about Africa that features missionaries, humanitarians, and their so-called beneficiaries. Putting humanitarian thought in conversation with postcolonial critique, this book brings together African, British, and U.S. writers typically read within separate traditions. Paustian shows how the novel—with its profound sensitivity to narrative—can enrich the critique of white saviorism while also imagining alternatives that give African agency its due.Table of ContentsIntroduction: The White Savior Narrative and the Third Sector Novel | 1 1. Nova Science Publishers Inc International Event Management: Bridging the Gap

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe event industry is a robust economic force worldwide. It spans into many other important sectors like travel, tourism, hospitality, technology, media and communication, inter alia. In America, it is estimated that 18 million events are organised yearly, generating approximately $280 billion in spending and $66.8 billion in labour income (Event Industry Outlook 2016). Events showcase talent and are perhaps those moments when societies and communities group together to revive certain traditions and cultures, which are otherwise dormant. In other contexts, like the case of tourism, events create economic value for the hosting destination, which boosts the economy. In contrast to permanent attractions, an event has the potential to promote authenticity and hence, is increasingly tapped by marketers for the purpose of differentiation. For instance, destinations celebrate their unique culture and heritage through events which represent important milestones in their tourism history. Given their capacity to attract visitors and generate profit, tourism destinations are increasingly capitalising on events as a diversification strategy. This trend has undoubtedly precipitated popularity in event studies and hence the writing of this book. The landscape of the book covers a broad spectrum of research. The chapters explore the changing dimensions in the industry based on the following themes: - Event Management Trends and Policies - Events and Destination Image and Preference - Events and Education - Events, Attendees and Organisers In the present book, an attempt is made to cover a wide range of events (sport, cultural, festivals and weddings) and issues related to the organisation and management of these events (policies, terrorism, etc.). The chapters also provide solutions and strategies for the organisation of successful events (protocol, etc.). The book also offers an opportunity to understand attendees from a consumer behaviour point of view. More importantly, some chapters cover events from an education point of view by examining the question from both a Higher Education perspective (universities) and an event organiser angle (what is done to make people aware of sustainability). The editors have invited academics from Africa (Kenya, Algeria), South America (Argentina), Europe (England, Italy and Greece), and the Middle East (Abu Dhabi) to contribute thirteen chapters in the fields of their expertise. With its perfect combination of theoretical and practical issues, this book aims to share with readers the knowledge needed to professionally manage events in different fields. The latest trends including the key theories, concepts and case studies related to event management are presented in a manner that intellectually stimulates readers to get ready for an experiential learning journey. This book will enable readers to understand the impact of events on destination management organisations, explain the role of events in promoting international sport competitions, and understand the key issues in planning and designing collaborative partnerships in event management. Each chapter features a real-life case study to highlight key concepts and replace theoretical concepts with practical solutions to effectively approach the organisation of events, as well as preparing readers to tackle any challenges they might face in their future opportunities to manage events.

Book SynopsisVeteran White House reporter April Ryan thought she had seen everything in her two decades as a White House correspondent. And then came the Trump administration. In Under Fire, Ryan takes us inside the confusion and chaos of the Trump White House to understand how she and other reporters adjusted to the new normal. She takes us inside the policy debates, the revolving door of personnel appointments, and what it is like when she, as a reporter asking difficult questions, finds herself in the spotlight, becoming part of the story. With the world on edge and a country grappling with a new controversy almost daily, Ryan gives readers a glimpse into current events from her perspective, not only from inside the briefing room but also as a target of those who want to avoid answering probing questions. After reading her new book, readers will have an unprecedented inside view of the Trump White House and what it is like to be a reporter Under Fire.Trade ReviewThere are times in history when having a government backstage pass might’ve been boring, or academically interesting, or perhaps just pretty cool. But April Ryan, a 21-year veteran White House reporter, is there now, at an absolutely atypical and ever-changing time, with a front row seat to this mess. Well, technically, she sits in the third row, “smack in the middle.” Ryan’s writing is conversational and accessible while also displaying impressive depth of knowledge and access. She provides, for instance, some context behind blundering generalizations made by the 45th president about healthcare, quoting not only from conversations she’s had with a senator the prez said refused to meet with him, but also from scholarly texts about health disparities for different races and socio-economic groups in the United States. Sometimes pointing the spotlight, occasionally in it, Ryan very apparently values truth—seeking it and telling it. This book gives perspective on our most recent presidential election and, though timely, will still be providing valuable insights for years to come. * BUST *This revealing memoir from veteran White House reporter Ryan relates “the backstory of some of the major news events of 2017 and 2018.”.... She clearly portrays the unrelenting stress of being one of the few black reporters on the prestigious White House beat, pulling back the curtain on the “emotional taxes” that African-American people endure daily in the workplace. This account will be an inspiration to those who have to fight similar battles. * Publishers Weekly *[Ryan's] keen insight as a woman of color working for a minority network lends context to the questions on race that she asks during press briefings.... Verdict: An intriguing insight into the challenges of reporting on Trump. Recommended for readers interested in journalism or politics.” * Library Journal *Journalist April Ryan provides accurate, historic information and perspective for anyone contemplating the 2018 elections and beyond. Under Fire is a must read for truth seekers and those who teach others the difference between media spin, personal commentary and current political facts. -- Martin Luther King, III"April Ryan is one of the most respected journalists in Washington for a reason -- she’s tough as nails, has a wealth of experience, and relentlessly pursues the truth. The qualities that make her a great reporter have also made her a frequent target of the Trump administration. In Under Fire, April Ryan deftly navigates these attacks to deliver a characteristically impartial account of an unprecedented time: she not only documents the chaos, confusion, and turmoil of the Trump era, but speaks to our common values, the enduring and urgent need for truth-tellers, and how the most difficult challenges can bring out the best in who we are. She is a living example of how the fire of adversity often reveals and forges greatness." -- Senator Cory Booker"April’s experience, knowledge, and judgment are on full display in this book. She understands the political process at the highest levels and has never been afraid to ask the tough questions off-record or with the eyes of the world on her or when her courage and mettle have been put to the test. All of these skills come together in a compelling volume that blends her insights with the very questions that we should all be confronting at this unique moment in history." -- Thurgood Marshall, Jr.The narrative is filled with gems. * Kirkus *Ryan, a veteran White House news correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, describes some of her disagreements with the press secretary’s office during the first 16 months of the Trump administration. Ironically, Ryan explains, these battles included criticism of her work in 2017 by then White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, who subsequently published an unfavorable critique of the Trump administration. Ryan notes some of her interactions with officials from the Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump eras. She is occasionally critical of policy issues that impact African Americans, such as whether the Trump administration should extensively support historically black colleges and universities. • Lessons for Nonprofit and Start-Up Leaders: Tales

Rowman & Littlefield Lessons for Nonprofit and Start-Up Leaders: Tales

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLessons for Non-Profit and Start-Up Leaders: Tales from a Reluctant CEO uses the experiences of a real company, Community Connections, to bring to life the practical dilemmas that an organization founded on a mission and guided by a set of ideals must confront and solve if it is to thrive. With no business or financial background, Maxine Harris and her partner Helen Bergman grew a tiny startup into a $35 million business. Through trial and error, they learned how to manage finances, hire staff, overcome barriers, and adapt to changing business models. In Lessons for Non-Profit and Start-Up Leaders, Harris shares her insights, struggles, and mistakes with the goal of helping others who may be starting and running non-profit organizations. She spells out the ways in which creativity, tenacity, and the power of relationships helped her and her partner overcome barriers that often cause start-ups to flounder in their first years of operation. In a humorous and novel twist, the book engages the reader with a series of original fables, each tailored to introduce a business dilemma in the language of “make-believe.” Michael O’Leary provides commentary that places the stories and case studies from Community Connections into a broader context, making the lessons accessible to anyone working in the non-profit or startup sector.Trade ReviewHarris, cofounder of D.C.-based nonprofit Community Connections, and O’Leary, a professor of leadership at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, team up to examine the challenges of establishing a new organization in this informative and thorough exploration. The authors take an unusual approach to their topic by starting each chapter with a fairy tale 'from our collective imagination' that colorfully illustrates a specific business hurdle, such as learning how to hire the right people, overcoming obstacles, or winning over stakeholders. These stories receive titles such as 'A Fable to Reach the Sky,' 'The Magic Ring,' and 'Crossing the Woods.' Each fairy tale is followed by a case study that shows how Community Connections dealt with the issue at hand. By using Community Connections as the sole source for their case studies, the authors impart to readers a solid understanding of how one organization met its challenges. While many business books provide examples from multiple companies in the name of breadth, seldom do readers have the opportunity to explore a sole organization in such depth. * Publishers Weekly *Harris and O’Leary present an interesting, practical guide to the challenges of creating a new organization. They use their experience as a case study, and the book’s eight brief and easy-to-read chapters provide an experiential perspective on the issues the authors faced and the imaginative ways in which they accepted and overcame them. From their original idea to the integration of their creativity, managerial expertise, and organizational leadership, they cleverly, without the lists, charts, and formalities traditionally associated with books of this type, draw on their experiences with the Community Connections endeavor to engage readers in their story and to introduce, illustrate, and blend the application of contemporary organizational theory, principles, and practices into a model for organizational success and sustainability. Although the book is oriented around the not-for-profit business format, the principles and practices used to grow from a start-up organization to a thriving, multimillion dollar, influential company are equally applicable to all entities. Anyone with an entrepreneurial interest will find this a unique, useful introduction and overview. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. * CHOICE *The fables and Case Studies make Lessons for Non-Profit and Start-Up Leaders an entertaining and thought-provoking read and the lessons identified and the solutions delivered are insightful. While these solutions may not work for all situations they offer several options to consider. Overall an interesting and entertaining presentation of the challenges that Maxine faced as CEO and a useful look into how nonprofit businesses see their role. * Oz Rhodes *This is a tale documenting a journey of discovery. The primary author, Maxine Harris, tells a very personal story describing the challenges she encountered in transforming an idea into a highly successful nonprofit organization. Finding that an ever-increasing number of decisions have to be made as the organization increases in size, she realizes that she is the one who has to make them. She discovers that the leadership skills she acquires along the way change her role from that of founder to CEO. The two authors of this book serve as mentors willing to offer essential lessons on what it takes to become an organizational leader. -- Grace Budrys, PhD, Professor Emerita, Sociology and MPH Program, DePaul UniversityAs the CEO of a large not-for-profit organization, the topics that the book covers are the ones that keep CEO’s up at night. The insights and recommendations are focused and meaningful. And I love the fables. -- Kenneth A. Samet, President & CEO, MedStar HealthFor anyone looking to understand and master the art of starting and building a sustainable not-for-profit organization, “Tales From A Reluctant CEO “ is a must read book for you. The combination of deep knowledge, vivid case studies and sage advice that only comes from thirty years of being in the role of CEO will get you to the level of insight found in this new and compelling book by Maxine Harris. Writing with whimsy (fables for each lesson), personal stories, and countless “how to’s” make it a valuable and compelling read. Enjoy "sitting at the side" of and looking over the shoulder of Maxine as she recounts her story and many lessons, and you’ll forever be a better leader. -- James Owen Mathews, Vice Chairman, Healthy Companies InternationalMaxine Harris has written a book that helps navigate an all too common dilemma which has not been addressed enough - the Non-Profit which is created to do good, but must also learn to be a business in order to survive. This is especially common in healthcare. As a woman entrepreneur who has run both for profit and non-profit organizations, this book resonated with my experience. I wish I'd had this book to read when I was first starting out. -- Rebecca Fishman, president, Florida Investment Group, LLCAs someone who's been on the founder's journey, reluctant (or not), I can honestly say Lessons for Nonprofit and Start-Up Leaders is a terrific book for someone thinking about starting a business with a purpose. I really enjoyed the fables, the stories and the wisdom that comes from someone who has lived the friction of real experience. Thanks for the honest reflection on the trials and triumphs of the start-up! -- John Lock, serial entrepreneur, investor and former Market Leader of Global B2B Training at KaplanWhat could be better than a book of fables and stories that also tells the compelling history of a remarkable organization. In their thoroughly engaging and imaginative book. Harris and O'Leary have managed to find just the right blend of theory, practice story, and insight to help any reader navigate the problems inherent in building an organization from the ground up. -- Eric Haseltine, PhD Futurist and author, Former Executive Vice President, Walt Disney ImagineeringTable of ContentsTable of Contents Introduction Every Organization Has a Culture of Its Own: The Beginnings of Community Connections How to Make an Idea Come Alive: Inspiration, Thinking It Through, and Making It Happen Power, Authority, and Responsibility: Who’s in Charge Around Here? Book SynopsisNow revised and updated throughout, with special emphasis on online customer service and retail websites.Social psychologists and law enforcement officials agree: If a window in a building is broken and left in its ruined state, the rest of the windows will soon be shattered, and the neighborhood will subsequently go downhill. According to business author Michael Levine, this same notion can be applied to the world of business. In BROKEN WINDOWS, BROKEN BUSINESS Levine guides readers through his premise that all big dilemmas in business stem from lack of attention to small details. Using dozens of corporate "broken window" case studies, including McDonald's, K-Mart, Google, JetBlue, and more, he argues that by integrating the solutions to small problems into a much larger plan, the resulting combined solution can stimulate overall business growth-and keep customers coming back for more.

Book SynopsisDespite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable. And as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too. What Christine Porath has discovered in her research is that leaders, organizations, and managers of all stripes may recognize there is a cost but have few solutions for how to implement the cure: Community. With her signature depth and grasp of research across myriad industries including business, healthcare, hospitality, and sports, Porath extrapolates from the statistics on the experiences of hundreds of thousands of people across six continents to show us the potential for change. Through uniting people and sharing information, unleashing them with autonomy, creating a respectful environment, practicing radical candor, providing a sense of meaning, and boosting personal well-being, anyone can help a community truly flourish. The applications of Porath's findings are endless, and the stories and case studies are positive and uplifting. This insightful exploration of the real nature of community-building will inspire readers to unite and grow their communities-be it in the workplace, the PTA, sports, or places of worship-and make them thrive.

Each summer, tomato festivals crop up across the country; the Heinz ketchup bottle, instantly recognizable, has earned a spot in the Smithsonian; and now the tomato is redefining the very nature of farming, moving from fields into climate-controlled mega-greenhouses the size of New England villages. Supported by meticulous research and told in a lively, accessible voice, Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World seamlessly weaves travel, history, humor, and a little adventure (and misadventure) to follow the tomato's trail through history. If you are a leader in your profession, community, or church, you may have been made to feel like an outsider--someone who must prove herself again and again to be worthy of following. Maybe you're tired, resentful, or beaten-down by the sense that you'll just never be good enough for some people. Take heart and take a seat at the table with Jeanne Porter King. Drawing from the biblical account of the Samaritan woman at the well, King shows how this outsider and outcast has been reduced to a stereotype by the same racist and sexist forces that attempt to reduce you to a stereotype and hinder your God-given call to leadership. She then shows how God uniquely positioned and equipped her to lead her people to the truth despite attempts to keep her silent and small. If you long to lead from a strong spiritual core rather than a set of expectations you had no part in setting, this book offers you the inspiration, encouragement, and practical tools to make leading well a reality in your life.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA revelatory global history shows how cheap American grain toppled the world's largest empires To understand the rise and fall of empires, we must follow the paths traveled by grain-along rivers, between ports, and across seas. In Oceans of Grain, historian Scott Reynolds Nelson reveals how the struggle to dominate these routes transformed the balance of world power. Early in the nineteenth century, imperial Russia fed much of Europe through the booming port of Odessa. But following the US Civil War, tons of American wheat began to flood across the Atlantic, and food prices plummeted. This cheap foreign grain spurred the rise of Germany and Italy, the decline of the Habsburgs and the Ottomans, and the European scramble for empire. It was a crucial factor in the outbreak of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. A powerful new interpretation, Oceans of Grain shows that amid the great powers' rivalries, there was no greater power than control of grain.

Book SynopsisThe startling picture of how China’s revolution in finance and technology is changing both Wall Street and the way individuals manage their personal finances. The future of finance – the way Wall Street operates and how individuals manage their money - is on the verge of upheaval. And the force underlying the change comes from China, where finance and technology are being merged into a system with consequences that resonate far beyond China’s border. The changes of this global revolution in finance and technology - fintech - will be as powerful as those wrought in social media, retailing and advertising by giants such as Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Twitter, which have overturned how we shop and communicate.China reinvented money with lightning speed, transforming a backward, antiquated cash-based finance system into one centered on super-apps created by technology giants Alibaba and Tencent. More powerful than anything available outside of China, they allow their billion users to pay, borrow, invest, buy goods and services, travel, chat (and far more) all fused together in one mobile phone application. Think Facebook, Google, Twitter, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, J.P. Morgan Chase all rolled into one app.We in the West need to understand China’s cashless revolution for reasons ranging from the macroeconomic to issues of personal liberty: The cutting edge of finance is now in China, forcing major financial firms in the United States and the West to figure out how not to be left behind.. China’s cashless revolution is also a harbinger of our future if we let the genie out of the bottle and allow big tech to become big finance. As money goes digital and central banks around the world consider launching digital currencies, we may have both immense convenience and a frightening concentration of power that could violate our privacy, stifle competition, increase financial risk, and give big firms or the government more control over our financial lives. And, once this genie is out of the bottle, the struggle to put it back in may be impossible.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor most baseball teams, the 2020 season was a strange, short, fanless diversion--but not in Los Angeles. After years of frustrating playoff runs, they finally reclaimed the World Series trophy after more than 30 years, led by their star pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, their electric new outfielder, Mookie Betts, and a bevy of impressive young players assembled by their hard-charging, ingenious team President, Andrew Friedman. The collection of talent that took the field in 2020, and again in 2021, was nothing short of a superteam, on a par with the dynastic Yankees of the 1990s.Yet winning at modern baseball is nothing like it was even 20 years ago. In the years since Billy Beane's famous Moneyball teams, baseball has grown to look less like a sport and more like a Wall Street firm that traded its boiler room for a field. Teams relentlessly exploit inefficiencies, new innovations, and tiny advantages--sometimes without regard for the rules of the game. The result is a sport that has never been played at a higher level, yet has seen its TV ratings and attendance numbers in long, slow decline. And with the league's collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the end of 2021, a labor crisis looms. This fascinating book not only examines the remarkable Dodgers team that won it all, but offers a unique view inside a sport that can't seem to break its addiction to winning at all costs--even when those costs might be the future of the game. From Kershaw's late-career breakthrough to Friedman's machinations, it shows what it takes to win, and what it will take to save the sport.

Book SynopsisFrom a long-time Alibaba executive and friend of Jack Ma, this is first book to articulate how Alibaba's unique culture and “tai chi” management principles are providing a business and economic development model for the rest of the world. If you took the economic might of Amazon, and added the penetration of Facebook, the ubiquity of Google, and the cultural significance of YouTube, you might have something starting to resemble Alibaba. Commonly mischaracterized as a kind of Chinese eBay for businesses, Alibaba and its interlinked network of products and services have exploded into global markets, disrupting conventional businesses and creating previously unimaginable opportunities for millions of small businesses worldwide. This book reveals the Tao of Alibaba—the company’s “secret sauce”—a consciously cultivated ethos and spirit that has enabled Alibaba to weather tough times (including its recent setbacks with the Chinese government) and persist toward a common mission. It is a blueprint of the company’s management philosophy, crystalized into the most important elements that have driven its success, and it provides a road map for how to incorporate these principles into any organization’s operations. Wong distills his 20 years of experience inside the company to show readers how to align their organization’s capabilities with performance-maximizing tools in order to achieve success. But most importantly, the Tao of Alibaba teaches the pursuit of greater purpose and meaning, steering entrepreneurs to view their ventures as a vehicle for having profound and lasting impacts on their communities. Ultimately, the lessons shared in The Tao of Alibaba will serve as timeless tools for any entrepreneur seeking to configure their organization toward purpose and impact.
