New Century Publications Co-operative Banks in India & Select Countries
Book SynopsisIn a market-oriented economy, the terms of contract are frequently weighted in favour of persons of large means. Those who have the command of scarce resources are left free to drive a bargain with those who need such resources but are ill-equipped to compete for their possession. Co-operatives are institutional agencies for achieving social cohesion. In a country whose economic structure has its roots in the villages, co-operation is something more than a series of activities organised on co-operative lines. Basically, its purpose is to evolve a system of co-operative community organisation which touches upon all aspects of life. Co-operatives in India started as a means of ensuring, for the poorly equipped citizens, advantages which better placed persons were able to command by their own individual resources. The principle of mutual aid, which is the basis of co-operative organisation, and the practice of thrift and self-help which sustains it, generate a sturdy feeling of self-reliance which is of basic importance in a democratic way of life. By pooling their experience and knowledge and by helping one another, members of co-operative societies cannot only find the solutions of individual problems but also become better citizens. The present work explains and examines the functioning of co-operative banks in India and select other countries -- including Grameen Bank of Bangladesh -- to understand their role in the globalised world.

Book SynopsisA $55 trillion Indian economy rivalling the world's largest in 2047, when India celebrates its centennialaudacious or achievable? In India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow's Economic Powerhouse, Krishnamurthy Subramanian explores this once-in-several-centuries opportunity knocking on India's doors. With a bold vision grounded in Indian realities, India@100 argues compellingly that India is at an inflection point that cannot be ignored. The country can grow at 8 per cent annually by reforming the economy zealously and doubling down on the sound policies implemented post 2014. Since 2007, when its GDP per capita was equal to India's current level, China exploited its demographic dividend to grow at about 8 percent for about two decades. Similar growth for the next two decades will make India a $55 trillion economy by 2047. Through meticulous research and insightful analysis, Subramanian explores four key pillars to propel India's growth.

Bridge Publications Inc Increasing Efficiency
Book SynopsisWhat we''re talking about very abruptly, very bluntly is this - The efficiency of an individual can be varied and efficiency of an individual can be increased. It can be bettered or it can be worsened. - L. Ron Hubbard. It is upon the individual that the success of an organization and, indeed, the civilization depends. Those who accomplish more with less effort are more willing, more capable and, in fact, more efficient. They suffer less emotional stress and strain. They are better suited to make key decisions. And as efficiency increases across whole industries, so the whole of society benefits. Such is the subject of Increasing Efficiency, wherein Ron reveals discoveries that provide a wholly new perspective on efficiency, not in a mechanical sense, but in terms of thought, emotion and effort. Moreover, here is the explanation of why an address to thought is of paramount importance, in that thought alone can change emotion and effort. In full, then, contained within this lecture is t

De Gruyter Contemporary Trends in Conflict and
Book SynopsisContemporary Trends in Conflict and Communication: Technology and Social Media examines the myriad ways conflict communication occurs in mediated spaces, whether through social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, on private social enterprise spaces, or through formal online dispute resolution (ODR) technologies. We were experiencing the increase of conflict communication in hybrid spaces prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the global lockdown that shifted everyone to remote teaching, learning, and working heightened our attention to the impact of technology and social media on conflict dynamics. While social media is often implicated in the spread of alternative facts, false news, and intimidation, technology and new media also have the capacity to enhance and transform conflict communication in education, workplace, and socio-political settings. The contributors to this volume showcase cutting-edge research that helps us make sense of the times we are living in and is organized in three sections: (1) Using technology to promote dialogue and collaboration, (2) Conflict communication on social media, (3) Online conflict management in education, training, and practice. This collection is relevant to scholars of conflict studies as it highlights key trends and areas for future research to improve conflict communication, dialogue, and collaboration and proposes ideas for using technology and social media to transform and connect rather than polarize and divide.

Harvard University Press Faces of Perfect Ebony
Book SynopsisThough blacks were not often seen on the streets of seventeenth-century London, they were already capturing the British imagination. In her exploration of this emerging black presence, Molineux assembles evidence ranging from shop signs, tea trays, trading cards, board games, and playing cards to song ballads and William Hogarth’s graphic satires.Trade ReviewOffers an important and original analysis of local and popular representations of empire in Britain. It is the first account to present a sustained analysis of how images of white mastery and black servitude were mobilized to help Britons think about themselves in a metropolitan context. This book will make a major contribution to British imperial history, Atlantic history and culture, the history of racialization and slavery, and the histories of art and visual culture. -- K. Dian Kriz, Brown UniversityA vivid and arrestingly original book. Molineux's innovative work shows us that the story of black life in imperial Britain survived in the most unlikely of sources: in contemporary print, iconography and theatre, in shop signs, trade cards, and ephemera of all kinds. Her persuasive argument, allied to the richness of her evidence, illuminates not only eighteenth-century Britain, but provides a discerning insight into the broader world of Atlantic history in the long century before abolition. What had once seemed a curiosity is now revealed, via Molineux's forensic and literary skills, as a multilayered portrait of cultural change during the long century of Britain's Atlantic empire. -- James Walvin, University of YorkAn exemplary work that takes the study of the visual cultures of slavery in bold new directions. By turning her delicate skills of interpretation to anything and everything that Britain's colonial ambition generated, Molineux has inaugurated what may be a tidal change in early slavery studies. She deserves our gratitude for having produced a brilliant piece of detective work which redefines our notions of racial encounter. Faces of Perfect Ebony is a book we should all read, digest, and read again, if we hope to understand the bizarre ways in which the white gaze appropriated and unfortunately still appropriates the black body. -- Marcus Wood, University of SussexFocusing on the period of Britain's greatest engagement in the Atlantic slave trade (ca. 1680-1807), Molineux taps on material culture and popular literature to reveal the presence of Africans in Enlightenment Britain. In doing so, she extends further into the past the growing body of scholarship emphasizing the imperial metropole as a significant contact zone between Britain and its tropical empire. She also highlights slavery's existence in the UK and correlation with racial "othering." While Britain's black population remained small, its presence exerted significant influence in British culture, from the use of images of Africans on shop signs and household commodities to the role of black subjects in performance and art. Most important is Molineux's exploration of British society's ambivalence toward people of African descent. This ambivalence enabled the simultaneous drawing of contrasts and similarities between whites and blacks in the UK, the latter feeding abolitionist sentiment. Based on exhaustive research, this book skillfully employs cultural critique to illuminate the empire's influence on British society. -- A. M. Wainwright * Choice *

Book SynopsisTrade Review"A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year""Indispensable. Deeply researched and powerfully argued, it is easily one of the most important studies of American governance in many years."---Simon Torracinta, Boston Review"Berman is well worth reading for deeply researched detail on how market-fundamentalist economics colonized the administrative state and thus weakened progressivism."---Robert Kuttner, American Prospect"The historical account in Thinking like an Economist, which makes up the bulk of the book, is an original, insightful, and persuasive story. . . . Berman provides a fresh perspective emphasizing a wide variety of microeconomic topics, including antitrust law, antipoverty policy, health care, and the environment."---Jason Furman, Foreign Affairs"Berman is at her best as an archeologist of ideas, digging through archives to excavate the origins of the economic style of reasoning and its takeover of federal policymaking."---Idrees Kahloon, The New Yorker"As a non-economist who writes about economics, I felt seen by Berman."---Peter Coy, New York Times"The import of her book is clear to me. It’s OK to believe there’s value beyond markets and competition, and while efficiency can be a useful goal in many cases, sometimes we should embrace deeper values around fairness, and dare I say it, right and wrong."---John Warner, Chicago Tribune"This outstanding work is highly recommended. . . . Essential." * Choice *"It turns out this kind of thinking—what Berman calls ‘the economic style of reasoning'—has taken over not just environmental policy but the entire US policy bureaucracy, to dismal results. It’s as much something Democrats have done to themselves as anything forced by the right. One always enjoys having one’s priors validated by scholars of much greater distinction than oneself, so I was delighted to read the book."---David Roberts, Volts"A captivating and detailed historical account of the rise of economics and economists’ influence within the US Administration during the 1960s and 1970s."---Cléo Chassonnery-Zaïgouche and Aurélien Goutsmedt, Oeconomia"An engaging account of the role that economists and government advisors with an economics training played in shaping public policy in the US during the post-war period. . . .Very well written and extremely erudite."---Giulio Zanella, Oeconomia

Harvard Educational Publishing Group Meeting Wise: Making the Most of Collaborative Time for Educators
Book SynopsisWhat’s the scarcest resource in schools? Almost any educator will answer, “Time.” The lack of time for colleagues to work together is one of the biggest barriers to improving teaching and learning. All too often, educators also say that the biggest waste of time ismeetings. People in schools attend dozens, if not hundreds, of meetings a year. How can that time be used wisely? This book, by two editors of Data Wise: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using Assessment Results to Improve Teaching and Learning, attempts to bring about a fundamental shift in how educators think about the meetings they attend. The authors make the case that these gatherings are potentially the most important venue where adult and organizational learning can take place in schools, and that making more effective use of this time is an important key to increasing student achievement. In Meeting Wise, the authors show why planning meetings is a high-leverage strategy for changing how people work together in the service of school improvement. To this end, they have created a meeting-planning “checklist” to develop a common language for discussing and improving the quality of meetings. In addition, they provide guidelines for readers on “wise facilitating” and “wise participating,” and also include “top tips” and “common dilemmas.”Simple, succinct, and practical, Meeting Wise is designed to be read and applied at every level of the educational enterprise, from district leadership meetings and professional developmentsessions to teacher-team meetings and even teachers’ meetings with parents and students.Table of ContentsCONTENTS Acknowledgments ix Introduction 1 Overview of the Book 3 How to Use This Book 5SECTION I: THINKING DIFFERENTLY1 Why Focus on Meetings? 9 Time as a Resource 9 Meetings as Powerful Learning Spaces 122 The Meeting Wise Checklist 19 Purpose 21 Process 24 Preparation 32 Pacing 343 Using the Checklist 39 Complete Agenda OverhaulGreenville Fifth-Grade Team Meeting 40 Targeting Intentional CollaborationJackson County Central Office Leadership Team 48 Targeting Adult LearningSheldon Academy Faculty Retreat 54 Targeting OutcomesHigh School Parent/Teacher Conference 58 Targeting Problem Solving Over ComplianceStatewide Quarterly Superintendents’ Meeting 61 Targeting ConnectionsNational Anti-Bullying Network Virtual Meeting 64 The Meeting Wise Agenda Template 68SECTION II: WORKING DIFFERENTLY4 Setting Up for Success 73 Foudnational Setup Tasks 73 Recurring Setup Tasks 785 Wise Facilitation 85 Keeping to (and Deviating from) the Agenda 88 Supporting Full Engagement 99 Managing Conflict 108 Maintaining Awareness of the Role You Play 1166 Wise Participation 119 Keeping to (and Deviating from) the Agenda 121 Supporting Full Engagement 124 Managing Conflict 129 Maintaining Awareness of the Role You Play 1337 Becoming Meeting Wise 141 Finding an Entry Point 142 Words to the Wise 148SECTION III: RESOURCES Selected Readings 153 Selected Protocols 155 Protocols in Brief 161 Quick Reference Guide 165 Notes 173 About the Authors 175 Index 177

Simon & Schuster Ltd The Machine That Changed the World
Book SynopsisWhen James Womack, Daniel Jones, and Daniel Roos wrote THE MACHINE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD in 1990, Japanese automakers, and Toyota in particular, were making a strong showing by applying the principles of lean production. However, the full power of lean principles was unproven, and they had not been applied outside of the auto industry. Today, the power of lean production has been conclusively proved by Toyota''s unparalleled success, and the concepts have been widely applied in many industries. Based on MIT''s pioneering global study of industrial competition, THE MACHINE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD offers a groundbreaking analysis of the entire lean business system, including product development, supplier management, sales, service, and production - an analysis even more relevant today as GM and Ford struggle to survive and a wide range of British abd American companies embrace lean production. A new Foreword by the authors brings the story up to date and details how their predictions were right. As a result, this reissue of a classic is as insightful and instructive today as when it was first published.
