Book SynopsisDespite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable. And as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too. What Christine Porath has discovered in her research is that leaders, organizations, and managers of all stripes may recognize there is a cost but have few solutions for how to implement the cure: Community. With her signature depth and grasp of research across myriad industries including business, healthcare, hospitality, and sports, Porath extrapolates from the statistics on the experiences of hundreds of thousands of people across six continents to show us the potential for change. Through uniting people and sharing information, unleashing them with autonomy, creating a respectful environment, practicing radical candor, providing a sense of meaning, and boosting personal well-being, anyone can help a community truly flourish. The applications of Porath's findings are endless, and the stories and case studies are positive and uplifting. This insightful exploration of the real nature of community-building will inspire readers to unite and grow their communities-be it in the workplace, the PTA, sports, or places of worship-and make them thrive.

  • Constructing Organizational Life

Oxford University Press Constructing Organizational Life

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAcross the social sciences, scholars are increasingly showing how people ''work'' to construct organizational life, including the rules and routines that shape and enable organizational activity, the identities of people who occupy organizations, and the societal norms and assumptions that provide the context for organizational action. The idea of work emphasizes the ways in which people and groups engage in purposeful, reflexive efforts rooted in an awareness of organizational life as constructed in human interaction and changeable through human effort. Studies of these efforts have identified new forms of work including emotion work, identity work, boundary work, strategy work, institutional work, and a host of others. Missing in these conversations, however, is a recognition that these forms of work are all part of a broader phenomenon driven by historical shifts that began with modernity and dramatically accelerated through the twentieth century. This book introduces the social-symbolic work perspective, which addresses this broader phenomenon. The social-symbolic work perspective integrates diverse streams of research to examine how people purposefully and reflexively work to construct organizational life, including the identities, technologies, boundaries, and strategies that constitute their organizations. In this book, the authors define social-symbolic work and introduce three forms - self work, organization work, and institutional work.Social-symbolic work highlights people''s efforts to construct the social world, and focuses attention on the motivations, practices, resources, and effects of those efforts. This book explores eight distinct streams of social-symbolic work research, drawing on a broad range of examples from the worlds of business, politics, sports, social movements, and many others. It provides researchers, students, and practitioners with an integrative theoretical framework useful in understanding social-symbolic work, a survey of the main forms of social-symbolic work, a rich set of theoretical opportunities to inspire new studies, and practical methodological guidance for empirical research on social-symbolic work.Trade ReviewOverall, this is a hugely impressive scholarly contribution. The authors cover all the bases: they build up their theory by proposing a clear integrative model, they elaborate and contextualize it in a fine-grained way through extensive reference to the literature and multiple examples. Finally, they enrich it theoretically, provide methodological tools for empirical research and offer practical applications. They do all this in a very accessible writing style, with multiple guideposts at the beginning and ends of chapters, and useful inserts and exhibits that summarize various aspects of the argument as they go along. Make sure your doctoral students read this, and recommend it to your colleagues! * Ann Langley, Organization Studies *This book is a marvelous treatise...It is a systematic, formal, methodical discussion of principles and evidence of the purposeful, reflexive efforts that make social constructions real. These efforts are built from discursive, relational, and material work that is done in and through social relationships. Evidence of these social-symbolic efforts is gathered from a large amount of management and organization research (the reference section is 36 pages long with roughly 750 citations) If we consider this book as an evocative treatise, then reflexive readers may discover that somewhere in their own thinking, they assume that portions of organizational life consist of social-symbolic work. The logic of this book may help readers articulate that assumption. This reviewer's own experience was one of pleasure at becoming immersed in a well-formed logic imposed on a field the reviewer thought he knew. * Karl E. Weick, Administrative Science Quarterly *Table of ContentsPart I 1: Introduction to Constructing Organizational Life 2: The Social-Symbolic Work Perspective Part II 3: Self Work 4: Self Work in Management and Organizational Research 5: Organization Work 6: Organization Work in Management and Organizational Research 7: Institutional Work 8: Institutional Work in Management and Organizational Research Part III 9: Theoretical Opportunities in the Study of Social-Symbolic Work 10: Methodological Challenges and Choices in the Study of Social-Symbolic Work 11: Conclusion: Understanding the Implications of a Social-Symbolic Work Perspective for Scholars, Change-Makers, and Citizens

Book Synopsis‘Stop talking about bringing your values to work and learn how to actually DO it!’ – Kim Scott, bestselling author of Radical Candor Intentional Integrity, by Silicon Valley expert Rob Chestnut, provides an excellent road map for any organization looking to create a clear set of values to live by. The year 2020 triggered consumers to re-evaluate their relationship with brands in general, leading to customers prioritizing those seen to be ‘doing good’ or ‘being helpful’ in the context of the pandemic. There is a strong sentiment that businesses have a big part to play in helping society recover and a purpose-driven organization will likely have the edge. In the midst of a year of crisis, there is an opportunity for companies to re-evaluate how their businesses operate. The power to act with integrity is the key to developing this culture. Drawing on his background as former General Counsel for Airbnb, Rob Chesnut explains the rationale and legal context for the ethics and practices, and presents scenarios to illuminate the nuances of thinking deeply and objectively about workplace culture. Book SynopsisAs business struggles to adapt to a rapidly changing world, managers are bombarded with a bewildering array of schemes for how to be a boss and make an organization tick. It's tempting to be seduced by futurist fantasies where every company has the culture of a startup, and where employees in wacky, whimsical office settings, liberated from hierarchies and bosses that oppress them, are the foundation for breakthrough performance."Get real," warn Nicolai J. Foss and Peter G. Klein. These fads ironically lead to micromanaging and, often, to disaster. Companies and societies, they show, need authority and hierarchy to coordinate work, including creative work. And, counterintuitively, Foss and Klein illustrate how the creative use of authority and hierarchy helps companies to be more agile and flexible, enabling educated, motivated people and teams to thrive. And not a moment too soon: Foss and Klein provide evidence that global challenges such as the proliferation of artificial intelligence, economic disruption, empowered knowledge workers, and black swan events such as the pandemic actually make hierarchy and the job of the manager more important than ever.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn essential work on teams—now updated with new research and tools and a new preface—X-Teams shows how an externally focused team model is the key to fueling innovation and your organization's success. You build a team around top-notch talent. The team members work well together; they're committed to the mission and are highly motivated to perform. Yet the results are disappointing. You're not seeing creativity and flexibility. You're not getting breakthrough ideas."Good" teams build camaraderie, confidence in their abilities, and a solid process for working together. But these internal dynamics—while positive in themselves—can create a wall between the team and the outside world. And that wall can prevent the team from adapting to change and delivering value to the organization. In this updated, streamlined edition, with a new preface and practical tools, Deborah Ancona and Henrik Bresman describe an externally focused team model—the x-team—that is even more relevant today than when it was first introduced. With their distinctively flexible membership and leadership structure, x-teams continuously reach outward to fuel the innovation process. With new examples and research from organizations such as Microsoft, Takeda, and the Museum of Modern Art, Ancona and Bresman show you how to build x-teams that: Keep pace with shifts in markets, technologies, cultures, and your competition Innovate by moving quickly from generating ideas to executing and diffusing them throughout your organization Employ "distributed leadership" to unlock crucial information, expertise, and new ways of working together—wherever these qualities reside, whether within or outside your company In an increasingly complex and ever-changing world, where adaptability and creativity are paramount to an enterprise's success—and even its survival—X-Teams is your handbook for winning.Trade ReviewAdvance Praise for the Updated Edition of X-Teams:"The authors succeed in conveying the importance of wide-ranging exploration and teamwork as essential for innovation." — Financial Times"The authors dive into the nitty-gritty details of engineering a better team." — Time.com"X-teams are the answer to performing in today's turbulent world. They enable organizations to move from strategy to implementation and from bureaucracy to innovation, creating value and profitable growth. The key is to combine external outreach to all stakeholders with an internal focus on creating a safe, disciplined, and learning culture." — Alan Mulally, former CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; former CEO, Ford Motor Company"When X-Teams was first written, Ancona and Bresman were prescient, well ahead of their time. They understood the changing landscape of teamwork and what it meant long before it was clear. Now, this terrific book is even better: well-researched, packed with engaging stories, and immensely practical." — Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School; author, Right Kind of Wrong"A game-changing book. X-Teams provides a compelling case for the importance of combining a sharp external focus with robust internal processes to overcome inertia and unlock transformational outcomes. The authors' practical framework is both insightful and actionable, and their real-world examples demonstrate the power of this approach." — Elcin Barker Ergun, CEO, Menarini Group"While strong internal cohesion and alignment are key to team success, it's crucial for team leaders at every level to have the humility and vigilance to look outward. X-teams spread leadership across the organization and facilitate learning and coordination within and across boundaries. This is a must-read for anyone trying to accelerate innovation." — Jerry Ng, founder and Chairman, Bank Jago"There are teams and there are x-teams. X-teams combat our inward-facing tendencies, opening our minds to the diversity and power of the world around us. They have helped us at Takeda R&D to increase our external learning and partnering. Use them as a tool to transform your organization." — Andrew Plump, MD, President, Research & Development, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company

Harvard Business Review Press Never Not Working: Why the Always-On Culture Is

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe always-on, hustle culture creates an unhealthy, counterproductive relationship with work. Many workers believe that to compete with other top talent, they must embrace a culture that rewards long hours and a constant connection to work. Businesses and society endorse busyness, overwork, and extreme commitment as the most valued traits in workers. Sometimes that endorsement is explicit, as when Elon Musk told X/Twitter employees to work "long hours at high intensity" or get fired. More often it's an implicit contract, a buildup of organizational and cultural norms and the adoption of new technologies that make it easy to tether people to work.Either way, this workaholic behavior is unhealthy and counterproductive for workers and for organizations. It's time to fight back. Malissa Clark—a preeminent researcher on the culture of overwork—shows you how in Never Not Working. Clark examines overwork and burnout, not just from the individual's perspective but from an organizational perspective too. She delivers a comprehensive, nuanced definition of workaholism, busting myths along the way—working long hours, it turns out, doesn't automatically make you a workaholic. She also helps you assess whether you're falling prey to the phenomenon and whether you're creating workaholics in your organization.Clark shows you how to escape the trap of putting work at the center of everything and thus losing your well-being—or your company's performance—in the process. Deeply researched and written for everyone from leaders to individual contributors, Never Not Working is the essential guide to identifying workaholism in yourself and others and starting on the road to recovery.Trade ReviewAdvance Praise for Never Not Working:"In her eye-opening new book, Malissa Clark reveals how our culture's obsession with overwork is keeping us from living our best lives. Clark shows how our culture's expectations of productivity have created a system that rewards overwork and punishes those who don't conform. Integrating cutting-edge academic research, interviews, and personal accounts, Clark provides a road map for getting out of the overwork trap and creating a more sustainable and fulfilling work-life balance. If you're ready to break free from the trap of overwork, this book is for you." — Ashley Whillans, author, Time Smart; Associate Professor, Harvard Business School"Never Not Working is an absolutely brilliant and intriguing book. Malissa Clark, one of the world's leading experts on overwork, shares incredible, evidence-based insights designed not just to inform but to shine a light on highly compelling and intriguing practices that each of us can implement in order to thrive at work in a healthy and sustainable manner." — Steven Rogelberg, Chancellor’s Professor, University of North Carolina at Charlotte; author, The Surprising Science of Meetings and Glad We Met"As the world of work evolves, what 'success' looked like in the past must be challenged, and that includes challenging the cultures that reward workaholics. Written from a solid base of research and real-life stories, Never Not Working is a must-read for individuals and organizations alike. . Clark's style is highly relatable, practical, and engaging from cover to cover." — Laura Hambley Lovett, podcast host, Where Work Meets Life; Adjunct Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology, University of Calgary"Today, whenever we're doing one thing, we're almost always thinking and feeling anxious and guilty about the fact that we're not doing something else—working. Malissa Clark's book is the antidote we all need: an opportunity to take a deep breath and rethink the way we look at our work and our lives." — Darria Long Gillespie, MD, author, Mom Hacks; Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee School of Medicine"Rapidly advancing technologies are blurring, even eliminating, the clocks and calendars separating work from the rest of life. This amazing book moves from the problem to possible solutions—for organizations and individuals. Book SynopsisWork-life balance isn’t about where or how you spend your time. At least not solely. It’s about where and how you use and replenish your energy. Work matters. Life matters. Work-life matters. As we start to navigate life during and after the pandemic, employers and employees are increasingly re-evaluating how work can be made more sustainable and more fulfilling. Many employees - particularly Gen X and Gen Z - are seeking a new psychological contract with their employers. Putting these trends into context and offering practical solutions, this book takes a deep dive into why work matters as part of a healthy and fulfilling life. The authors present a new and different way of thinking about the matter of balance, arguing that there is no hard divide between ‘work’ and life’ because ‘work’ takes place entirely within ‘life’ and you can’t balance two things when one is a subset of the other. To achieve the balance required for a healthy existence, we need to recognise that there are activities in all parts of work-life that drain our energy and others that give us a buzz. Rather than trying to solve the drain of hard work by living it large at the weekend – or compensating for an unfulfilling home life by working like a demon, we need to create balance at work and balance at home. Now is a golden opportunity to re-examine the world of work and job-craft to make them more satisfying, less draining and more energising. The ideas in this book provide a practical guide to help that process.Table of Contents1. Introduction: A Sideways Look at Work-Life Balance2. A Brief History of Work Life Balance3. Work Matters4.
