Here he became aware of the enormity of the horrendous bush meat problem (more than 5 million tons a year, according to 2004 figures), and the problems of illegal logging and habitat destruction. He studied the effects of the bushmeat trade, and was not alone in concluding that SARS, HIV, Ebola and Marburg's disease in humans are directly related to eating or handling animal (especially primate) meat. Dr Haigh also spent time working with rare white rhinos in South Africa, and African wild dogs in Namibia and Botswana. He instigated a programme of taking Canadian vet students to Uganda where they received far more hands-on experience than they ever could at home. But throughout his travels he has continued to learn more about lions--distribution, traditions, superstitions, witchcraft, the history of stock attacks--and has examined in great detail the problem of declining lion numbers. Having worked with other vets and wildlife experts all over the continent, such as Paul Sayer, Dieter Rottcher, Toni Harthoorn, Gladys Kalema, Laurence Frank, and Annie Olive-Krona, Dr Haigh is well informed on all matters concerning wildlife, but particularly with the subject of people living alongside lions. As parasites impart a great impact on animal health, these drugs are often essential for the expression of the full genetic potential of production. However, despite the initial success, after years of massive use of anthelminthic drugs , the increase in prevalence of resistant nematodes became a major problem. Anthelmintics are commonly used to treat parasitic worm infections not only in animals, but humans as well. Book SynopsisThe important foodborne zoonotic pathogen non-typhoidal Salmonella cause gastroenteritis, bacteremia and focal infection in humans. Salmonella evades the host''s immune system through the coordinated expression of complex arrays of virulence associated-genes. The dynamics of host-pathogen Salmonella enterica interaction and infection might enhance the development of novel targeted preventative measures and drug regimens. However, widespread usage of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant Salmonella. To avoid this problem, effective vaccines are developed to control non-typhoidal Salmonella zoonotic infections. An understanding of how Salmonella enterica spreads and survives in tissues has very important implications for targeting intracellular Salmonella with vaccine-induced immune responses. Application of advanced knowledge and scientific methods in the development of vaccines could diminish the non-typhoidal Salmonella disease burden globally. Currently, the oral live attenuated vaccines showed an efficient protection against non-typhoidal Salmonella zoonotic infection. However, inactivated or sub-unit vaccines are considered to be the safest over live vaccines. Ultimately, this review explores the molecular basis of non-typhoidal Salmonella pathogenesis. In addition to pathogenesis, recent advances in generation of Salmonella vaccines are also emphasised. This review also gives a deep insight into the future development of Salmonella vaccines with different innovations.
