    GMC Publications Typographic Specimens

Book SynopsisIn 1831, Reverend Jackson Whitehead served as chaplain aboard the HMS Pica, which accompanied the Beagle on its second survey expedition. Whitehead was a keen collector of fauna as well as a typography enthusiast. Upon realising that the majority of both ships' crews were either committed atheists or budding evolutionists, Whitehead embarked on creating a whole series of natural history specimens made up out of typographical characters. Only recently, after the restoration of Whitehead's ancestral home, has the manuscript of his work come to light. Edited by artist, A.W. Bainbridge, Typographic Specimens presents his menagerie of beasts, fish, fowl and invertebrates, all created from traditional typefaces, numerals and punctuation marks. AUTHOR: A.W. Bainbridge is an artist, designer and educator. His natural talent for drawing led to him studying art, eventually specializing in Graphic Design at Preston Polytechnic. After graduating in 1991 he practised for the best part of a decade with The Chase Creative Consultants, one of the UK's leading design agencies. He returned to Higher Education in 1999 and is currently Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communications and Creative Thinking at The University of Central Lancashire. Lecturing aside, he has a penchant for words and type, and is an inveterate collector, connector and documenter, and a serial dry stone waller. SELLING POINTS: . Wonderfully inventive illustrations . All images accompanied by brief, witty descriptions . Great gift book for art and graphic design-lovers

  • John Baskerville: Art and Industry in the

Liverpool University Press John Baskerville: Art and Industry in the

Book SynopsisThis book is concerned with the eighteenth-century typographer, printer, industrialist and Enlightenment figure, John Baskerville (1707-75). Baskerville was a Birmingham inventor, entrepreneur and artist with a worldwide reputation who made eighteenth-century Birmingham a city without typographic equal, by changing the course of type design. Baskerville not only designed one of the world’s most historically important typefaces, he also experimented with casting and setting type, improved the construction of the printing-press, developed a new kind of paper and refined the quality of printing inks. His typographic experiments put him ahead of his time, had an international impact and did much to enhance the printing and publishing industries of his day. Yet despite his importance, fame and influence many aspects of Baskerville’s work and life remain unexplored and his contribution to the arts, industry, culture and society of the Enlightenment are largely unrecognized. Moreover, recent scholarly research in archaeology, art and design, history, literary studies and typography, is leading to a fundamental reassessment of many aspects of Baskerville’s life and impact, including his birthplace, his work as an industrialist, the networks which sustained him and the reception of his printing in Britain and overseas. The last major, but inadequate publication of Baskerville dates from 1975. Now, forty years on, the time is ripe for a new book. This interdisciplinary approach provides an original contribution to printing history, eighteenth-century studies and the dissemination of ideas.Trade ReviewReviews 'A fascinating account of the printer, type designer, and manufacturer, John Baskerville, which sheds new light on the history of this polymathic figure. 10 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough the selection of eleven master designers, Jerry Kelly illustrates a wide range of styles: from classically inspired design and historical revival, to novel and modern layouts. Throughout the twentieth century, modern design theories in combination with newer printing technologies offered book designers far more options than were previously available to them. Utilizing these resources, some skillful artisans produced stunning designs in period style, arranging modern re-cuttings of early type designs with historical decoration that resulted in the creation of truly beautiful books; while others preferred a more contemporary aesthetic, building upon earlier principles in a fresh, novel manner. Through the selection of eleven master designers, Jerry Kelly illustrates a wide range of styles: from classically inspired design and historical revival, tonovel and modern layouts. He describes the care with which each designer combined typographic elements in their own unique way. The selection of these designers, ranging from Updike to Zapf, is only a small sampling of the practitioners that the twentieth century produced, but they are indicative of the wide range of book design styles achieved during this exceptionally dynamic century. JERRY KELLY is an award winning designer, calligrapher and printer working in New York City.

Book SynopsisOf all his contributions to the graphic arts, Hermann Zapf's (1918-2015) dedication to sharing his knowledge may be regarded as one of his most enduring achievements. And no institution benefited more from his generosity than Rochester Institute of Technology where, in 1979, he began to teach a series of summer classes in Advanced Calligraphy. The classes attracted an international group of accomplished graphic artists whose hours spent with Zapf became treasured memories. This new book - Manuale Calligraphicum - was conceived as a way to honor Hermann Zapf's legacy at RIT by offering a select group of accomplished former students an opportunity to share, through their art, what those classes meant to them. The specifications for submissions were simple: design an original calligraphic alphabet or quotation that could be presented and formatted in the manner of Professor Zapf's famous model book Feder und Stichel (1950) and printed letterpress to the very highest standards. The variety and quality of the work submitted has been extraordinary. The Cary Collection is proud to present this selection of 19 works from 15 calligraphers as their tribute to a master teacher and dear friend. Limited edition of 325 copies, designed by Jerry Kelly and letterpress printed on Hahnemühle paper by Bradley Hutchinson. Using very different kinds of instruments, from a MacBook to a pantograph, for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Kuhne embraces the labour involved in the entire process of creating a poster from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of the letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary on how to communicate through type and form in a truly un-nostalgic way. Book SynopsisTalbot Baines Reed wrote in a period of transition when hot metal typesetting and offset printing were transforming the scale and scope of printing. In the previous 350 years, England had experienced civil war and started the Industrial Revolution. The dissemination of printed information and learning is inextricable to this history, and the art with which this was done is a quintessential part of English culture. Reed is distinctly aware of the great debt that his contemporaries had to the early typographers (notable among them William Caslon - considered the first great English typographer - and John Baskerville), and everywhere in his work is this shown in his meticulous and unstinting presentation of the fascinating details of their artistic exploration and expression. Modern readers will enjoy the technical and historical insight this work affords, and also find the style and presentation fresh and engaging.Table of ContentsPreface; Introductory chapter. Book SynopsisHow New York City subways signage evolved from a “visual mess” to a uniform system with Helvetica triumphant. For years, the signs in the New York City subway system were a bewildering hodge-podge of lettering styles, sizes, shapes, materials, colors, and messages. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. This book tells the story of how typographic orde

Book SynopsisAn exploration of minimal writing—texts generally shorter than a sentence—as complex, powerful literary and visual works. In the 1960s and 70s, minimal and conceptual artists stripped language down to its most basic components: the word and the letter. Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Carl Andre, Lawrence Weiner, and others built lucrative careers from text-based art. Meanwhile, poets and writers created works of minimal writing—visual texts generally shorter than a sentence. (One poem by Aram Saroyan reads in its entirety: eyeye.) In absence of clutter, Paul Stephens offers the first comprehensive account of minimal writing, arguing that it is equal in complexity and power to better-known, more commercial text-based art.Minimal writing, Stephens writes, can be beguilingly simple on the surface, but can also offer iterative reading experiences on multiple levels, from the fleeting to the ponderous. “absence of clutter,” for example, the

This attitudinal change toward digital technology has coincided with a growing fascination and re-evaluation of those pre-digital skills and processes that had been considered in recent years to be irrelevant. Book SynopsisThe story of a foundational aspect of publishing, from Gutenberg’s press to today’s digital type. It’s common knowledge that the name Gutenberg and the words “moveable type” go together. What’s far less known is that Garamond, Baskerville, and Bodoni aren’t just font options in a word processing dropdown menu, but the names of some of the real punchcutters and type designers who raised the essential work of typography to the level of art. One Hundred Books Famous in Typography, the latest entry in the Grolier Club’s prestigious Grolier Hundred series, is the story of art and technology working in harmony with each other, all the way from Johannes Gutenberg’s ingenious development of a system for reproducing texts through the introduction of newer technologies like hot-metal line casting, phototype, and digital type. Featuring scholarly yet accessible context for the works discussed and their typographical significance, and illustrated with more than two hundred images, Jerry Kelly’s book is the most comprehensive exploration yet of this essential facet of bookmaking and publishing.Trade Review“From the paper and handsome binding to the printing of the illustrations, every aspect of One Hundred Books Famous in Typography has been carefully considered. University of Iowa Press Aspects of Contemporary Book Design

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this manifestly practical book, Richard Hendel has invited book and journal designers he admires to describe how they approach and practice the craft of book design. Designers with interesting and varied careers in the field, who work with contemporary technology in today’s publishing environment, describe their methods of managing the challenges presented by specific types of books, presented side by side with numerous images from those books. Not an instruction manual but a unique, on-the-job, title page–to–index guide to the ways that professional British and American designers think about design, Aspects of Contemporary Book Design continues the conversation that began with Hendel’s 1998 classic, On Book Design.Contributing designers who focus on solving problems posed by nonfiction, fiction, cookbooks, plays, poetry, illustrated books, and journals include Cherie Westmoreland, Amy Ruth Buchanan, Mindy Basinger Hill, Nola Burger, Ron Costley, Kristina Kachele, Barbara Wiedemann and Sue Hall, as well as a host of other designers, typesetters, editors, and even an author. Abbey Gaterud attempts to define the conundrum that the e-book presents to designers; Kent Lew describes the evolution of his Whitman typeface family; Charles Ellertson reflects upon the vital relationship between the typesetter and the designer; and Sean Magee writes about the uneasy alliance between designers and editors. In an extended essay that is as frank and funny as it is illuminating, Andrew Barker takes the reader deep into the morass—excavating the fine, finer, and finest details of working through a series design. At the heart of this copiously illustrated book is the enduring need for design that clarifies the way for the reader, whether on the printed page or on the computer screen. Blending his roles as designer, author, interviewer, and editor, Hendel reaches across both sides of the drafting table—both real and virtual—to create a book that will appeal to aspiring and seasoned book designers as well as writers, editors, and readers who want to know more about the visual presentation of the written word.Trade Review“Rich Hendel begins Aspects of Contemporary Book Design by floating the proposition that, ‘these may be the final days of book design.’ Don’t believe him. For he then proceeds to prove himself wrong, chapter after chapter. Throughout this learned and insightful series of interviews, Hendel and his fellow designers both reaffirm and celebrate the enduring role played by design in uniting the ideas of authors with the enthusiasms of readers. Along the way we enjoy stories and lessons served up by some of the best designers in publishing. The result is a great tour of the very lively art of book design.”—Peter Dougherty, director, Princeton University Press

Book SynopsisTop selling author and hand lettering expert Amy Latta is back with her third book, aimed at spreading happy vibes and providing more than a few giggles. With witty quotes - such as “My idea of clean eating is having pizza while taking a bubble bath” - Amy gives readers a new lease on lettering, featuring brand new techniques, fonts and embellishments. After the incredible success of her first book, Hand Lettering for Relaxation, Amy is answering the demand of her audience for new flourishes and more of her popular humorous quotes she posts on her social media accounts. Readers can expect the same features that made Amy’s first book so special: her down to earth voice and clear instructions; high-quality, thick art paper ideal for brush pens and lettering tools; and blank border pages for final designs. This time, Amy adds a bonus project section giving readers simple DIY crafts for things like lettered pillows and wood signs to spread their lettering joy with others in unique ways. This fresh, fun book with hilarious quotes will have readers hooked and thoroughly entertained.
