Merrell Publishers Ltd Mid-Century Type: Typography, Graphics, Designers
Book SynopsisMid-Century Type is a fascinating visual exploration of how, during the middle decades of the last century, the typographer became an independent, influential contributor to a fast-developing technological world of communications. The years after the Second World War were a time of great economic, social, and cultural change as consumerism erupted across industrialized countries, fuelled by the growth of mass communication. The same period was also one of exceptional creativity, including in the fields of typography and graphic design. During the war, governments came to appreciate the skill of designers in communicating public information effectively. Once the conflict was over, designers were recognized for the first time as having an essential role to play in the rebuilding of economies, infrastructure, and public morale. The typographer, however, was still something of a 'Cinderella': type was crucial to communication in almost any medium, yet typography remained a vague and largely unacknowledged profession. This perception changed dramatically between 1945 and 1965. The range of media expanded, and the influence of time-based media such as television and film was profound, providing information 'as it happens' and transforming the turning of a page into the equivalent of the film editor's cut. 'Speed' was the elixir for growth and prosperity. The specific needs of motorway and airport signage were recognized as requiring the expertise of a typographer. Phototypesetting and offset lithographic printing coalesced to provide full-colour reproduction, which in turn vastly increased the sale of all printed material, but especially books and magazines. All of this drew typographers into what became established as specialist fields of printed and screen media. Finally, the cultural value of the typographer's work could be equated with that of the artist, poet, author, and film director. Mid-Century Type charts this meteoric rise of the typographer and graphic designer (often one and the same person) during the early post-war decades. Each chapter is devoted to a specialist field of design activity in which typography played a significant role, from type design and corporate identity to advertising and film, and television. David Jury's text offers fresh insight into the work of a wide array of British, European, and American typographers and is accompanied by some 350 illustrations, many from the author's own extensive collection.Table of ContentsIntroduction Type Design Typographic Journals Posters Corporate Identity Advertising Magazines Books Transport Signage Film and Television Printed Ephemera Notes Further Reading Acknowledgments Index

Skyhorse Publishing Vintage Graphic Design: Type, Typography,
Book SynopsisA Revival and Celebration of the Golden Age of Typography Any type user and enthusiast will doubtless derive joy from the letters and ornaments in Vintage Graphic Design, gathered from the rare and forgotten sources that authors Steven Heller and Louise Fili have collected over the years. As type gourmets, Heller and Fili savor type in many forms—especially the aesthetically idiosyncratic and the printed artifacts of which historical or retro typefaces are samples. A period of rapid innovation and growth in printing and type technology, the late 1800s and early 1900s saw type foundries in Europe and America burst into wellsprings for bold compositions and arresting typefaces However, this is not a history book; rather, it is a sampler of tasty typographic confections or so-called eye candy. The curated selection here reflects this era’s printing material, including stock pictorial cuts, filigree borders, and cartouches galore. These aesthetic gems are the fruit of Heller’s and Fili’s labors after spending decades scouring the antiquarian book and flea markets of Paris, Berlin, Rome, Florence, Barcelona, eastern Europe, and elsewhere online and in auction catalogs to find examples of graphic design worth preserving and reviving. These beautiful—yet often absurd—rarities represent historic typeface catalogs and specimen sheets from an age when craftsmanship was at its zenith and attention to manufacture was rigorous. Paired best with the authors’ 2011 book, Vintage Type & Graphics, this full color volume is not just about delectation for its own sake, but to prove beyond a drop-shadow of a doubt that just because a typeface or decorative device is “old” does not mean it is “old-fashioned.”

MIT Press Ltd Helvetica and the New York City Subway System The
Book SynopsisHow New York City subways signage evolved from a “visual mess” to a uniform system with Helvetica triumphant. For years, the signs in the New York City subway system were a bewildering hodge-podge of lettering styles, sizes, shapes, materials, colors, and messages. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. Book SynopsisAn exploration of minimal writing—texts generally shorter than a sentence—as complex, powerful literary and visual works. In the 1960s and 70s, minimal and conceptual artists stripped language down to its most basic components: the word and the letter. Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Carl Andre, Lawrence Weiner, and others built lucrative careers from text-based art. Meanwhile, poets and writers created works of minimal writing—visual texts generally shorter than a sentence. (One poem by Aram Saroyan reads in its entirety: eyeye.) In absence of clutter, Paul Stephens offers the first comprehensive account of minimal writing, arguing that it is equal in complexity and power to better-known, more commercial text-based art.Minimal writing, Stephens writes, can be beguilingly simple on the surface, but can also offer iterative reading experiences on multiple levels, from the fleeting to the ponderous. “absence of clutter,” for example, the

Book SynopsisAn innovative examination of typography as a medium of communication rather than part of print or digital media.Typography is everywhere and yet widely unnoticed. When we read type, we fail to see type. In this book, Kate Brideau considers typography not as part of print media or digital media but as a medium of communication itself, able to transcend the life and death of particular technologies. Examining the contradiction between typographic form (often overlooked) and function (often overpowering), Brideau argues that typography is made up not of letters but of shapes, and that shape is existentially and technologically central to the typographic medium. After considering what constitutes typographic form, Brideau turns to typographic function and how it relates to form. Examining typography's role in both the neurological and psychological aspects of reading, she argues that typography's functions exceed reading; typographic forms communicate, but that commun

Thames & Hudson Ltd Arcade Game Typography The Art of Pixel Type
Book SynopsisArcade Game Typography presents readers with a fascinating new world of typography the pixel typeface. Video game designers of the 70s, 80s and 90s faced colour and resolution limitations that stimulated incredible creativity: with letters having to exist in an 8x8 square grid, artists found ways to create expressive and elegant character sets within a tiny canvas. Featuring pixel typefaces carefully selected from the first decades of arcade video games, Arcade Game Typography presents a previously undocumented outsider typography' movement, accompanied by insightful commentary from author Toshi Omagari, a Monotype typeface designer himself, and screenshots of the type in use. Exhaustively researched, this book gathers an eclectic typography from hit games such as Super Sprint, Pac-Man, After Burner, Marble Madness, Shinobi, as well as countless lesserknown gems. The book presents its typefaces on a dynamic and decorative grid, taking reference from high-end type specimens while adding a suitably playful twist. Unlike print typefaces, pixel type often has bold colour baked in' to the characters, so Arcade Game Typography looks unlike any other typography book, fizzing with life and colour.Trade Review'An eclectic compendium of 70s, 80s and early 90s arcade video game pixel typography' - TypeRoom'Expansive … special' - Better Letters'A deep dive into the distinctive typefaces of the golden age of arcade games' - Creative Review'Celebrates the under-appreciated world of arcade game typography' - Design Week'The first book of its kind … it gives an all-encompassing and incredibly well-researched insight into an undocumented movement characterised by “outsider typographers”' - Mr Porter'Fantastic' - It’s Nice That'Our favourite book … explores the fascinating new world of typography' - TypeRoom'A definitive guide to 70s, 80s and early 90s arcade game pixel typography' - HypeBeast
