Information Age Publishing Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTeaching and Learning at a Distance is written for introductory distance education courses for preservice or in-service teachers, and for training programs that discuss teaching distant learners or managing distance education systems. This text provides readers with the basic information needed to be knowledgeable distance educators and leaders of distance education programs. The teacher or trainerwho uses this book will be able to distinguish between appropriate uses of distance education. In this text we take the following themes:The first theme is the definition of distance education. Before we started writing the first edition of Teaching and Learning at a Distance we carefully reviewed the literature to determine the definition that would be at the foundation of our writing. This definition is based on the work of Desmond Keegan, but is unique to this book. This definition of distance education has been adopted by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and by the Encyclopedia Britannica. The second theme of the book is the importance of research to the development of the contents of the book. The best practices presented in Teaching and Learning at a Distance are validated by scientific evidence. Certainly there are "rules of thumb," but we have always attempted to only include recommendations that can be supported by research. The third theme of Teaching and Learning at a Distance is derived from Richard Clark's famous quote published in the Review of Educational Research that states that media are mere vehicles that do not directly influence achievement. Clark's controversial work is discussed in the book, but is also fundamental to the book's advocacy for distance education—in other words, we authors do not make the claim that education delivered at a distance is inherently better than other ways people learn. Distance delivered instruction is not a "magical" approach that makes learners achieve more. The fourth theme of the book is equivalency theory. Here we present the concept that instruction should be provided to learners that is equivalent rather than identical to what might be delivered in a traditional environment. Equivalency theory helps the instructional designer approach the development of instruction for each learner without attempting to duplicate what happens in a face-to-face classroom. The final theme for Teaching and Learning at a Distance is the idea that the book should be comprehensive—that it should cover as much of the various ways instruction is made available to distant learners as is possible. It should be a single source of information about the field.

The best thing this book accomplishes is its unabashed encouragement to talk to our colleagues in order to increase solidarity and togetherness in the combat against changing and challenging professional environments.' -- Kate Mattocks Journal of Higher Education - September 2016 "The Slow Professor recognizes the psychological strains of academic work, but subtly points toward explicitly political responses to the emotional toxins we absorb; but, it also avoids the fate of most subject-centred therapeutic exercises which are mainly courses in adaptation and resignation. Although it is no call to arms, no manifesto, nor a shout of defiance at the authorities, for insightful readers, the next step beyond self-awareness will be obvious." -- Howard A. Doughty CAUT Bulletin, September, 2016 "It's a beguiling book, written in controlled anger at the corporatized university, overrun by administrators and marketers." -- Rick Salutin The Toronto Star, September 9, 2016 'A welcome part of a crucial conversation.' -- Rachel Hadas Times Literary Supplement, July 29, 2016 "'Thrilling' isn't a word I often apply to books about higher education, but these pages galvanized me." -- Barbara Hunt National Public Radio (NPR), May 13, 2016 "What Maggie Berg and Barbara Seeber are doing in The Slow Professor is protesting against the "corporatization of the contemporary university", and reminding us of a kind of "good" selfishness; theirs is a self-help book that recognises the fact that an institution can only ever be as healthy as the sum of its parts." -- Emma Rees Times Higher Education, May 26, 2016 "The fact that precarious labour is becoming the norm in the academy impacts everyone, including those with tenure." -- Christina Turner Rabble.ca, May 26, 2016 "While The Slow Professor has already raised some eyebrows as an example of "tenured privilege," it's at once an important addition and possible antidote to the growing literature on the corporatization of the university." -- Colleen Flaherty Inside Higher Education, April 19, 2016Table of ContentsPreface Introduction 1. Book SynopsisDesign Research in Education is a practical guide containing all the information required to begin a design research project. Providing an accessible background to the methodological approaches used in design research as well as addressing all the potential issues that early career researchers will encounter, the book uniquely helps the early career researcher to gain a full overview of design research and the practical skills needed to get their project off the ground. Based on extensive experience, the book also contains multiple examples of design research from both undergraduate and postgraduate students, to demonstrate possible projects to the reader. With easy to follow chapters and accessible question and response sections, Design Research in Education contains practical advice on a wide range of topics related to design research projects including: The theory of design research, what it entails, and when it is suitable Trade Review Arthur Bakker’s clear logic helps to cut through the many questions and confusions that persist about DBR. This book offers an invaluable contribution to the literature by making DBR more accessible to research students and their supervisors. Rupert Wegerif, Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge This book offers not only clear guidance about essentials of design research for novices, but also stimulating food for thought for experienced colleagues. Jan Van den Akker, Professor Emeritus at the University of Twente, Netherlands; former Director of SLO, Netherlands institute for Curriculum Development Arthur is a careful and thorough researcher who writes clearly. In writing his book, he interviewed leading DBR researchers and scholars and shared draft chapters for feedback. I was honored to be one of them. I recommend it for your consideration. David Reinking, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy at the University of Georgia This is a compellingly crafted volume that does much to clarify and organize the wide range of research approaches described as design research. Although the volume was written primarily to guide early career researchers, its thoughtful and occasionally provocative handling of issues, which all design researchers confront, make it imperative reading for newcomers to design research and more experienced practitioners alike. Richard Lehrer, Professor Emeritus Department of Teaching and Learning, Vanderbilt University, USA Design Research in Education offers an accessible introduction to the essentials of design research. Geared specifically towards junior researchers, the book succeeds in providing a timely contribution to this still developing field in a way that will be of interest to experienced researchers also. Arthur Bakker has conducted an impressive amount of research in the process of writing this book: he refers to interviews and personal communications with many, perhaps most, of the leading figures from the education design research community. The considerable amount of literature cited at the end of every chapter means that this book offers one of the most comprehensive reviews of extant work on educational design research. • Emergent Teaching

    Rowman & Littlefield Emergent Teaching

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEmergent Teaching inspires teachers to teach with more spontaneity and creativity within an educational environment that is highly constrained. It demonstrates, through descriptive stories, creative strategies and provides an intellectual foundation for emergent teaching. The authors show how teachers can relate subject matter to students' lives and experience. They illustrate rituals and processes that help establish a caring learning community. Finally, the book applies the theories of complexity and chaos while reaffirming the natural wisdom that teachers possess within themselves. The authors have chosen a narrative format that models rather than tells, and encourages readers to connect to their own stories and experiences. The book is consistent with the theoretical understandings and research in the complexity sciences but takes a narrative approach, giving examples and illustrations of ideas through stories, myths, and parables that act as metaphors and illustrations. Key topiTrade ReviewThis book is a conversation, a curriculum conversation among Sam, an educator with an interest in the new sciences, holistic education, and spirituality, and David, a trained artist and ordained Zen monk, and the students they have worked with and learned from over the years. From these conversations emerge creative insights into teaching, learning, living. Reading this book will transform one’s own insights into all three. -- Wm. Doll, Univ. of British Columbia, Co-Founder of AERA, Chaos and Complexity SIGIn a universe increasingly shown to be radically interconnected and dynamic, education has largely remained disconnected and plodding. Drawing from the 'new sciences' and extensive teaching encounters, Emergent Teaching provides a philosophically astute and eminently practical hope for teaching as holistic, structured improvisation. This nuanced, wise, and intimate work, punctuated with compelling first-hand accounts of transformative teaching, serves as a potent invitation into what vibrant teaching can be. -- Tobin Hart, Professor of Psychology, Author of: The Secret Spiritual World of Children and From Information to Transformation: Education for the Evolution of ConsciousnessThe concepts of emergent curriculum and emergent teaching have been around for years but have remained elusive. Crowell and Reid-Marr's book at last brings clarity to emergent teaching in manner that teachers will find helpful. The book is filled with stories and vignettes that bring emergent teaching to life. The ideas presented are linked to the new sciences so that underlying the practices that are described is a strong theoretical base. This book is a very welcome addition to the literature on holistic education. -- Dr. Jack Miller, professor of curriculum, teaching, and learning, University of Toronto; author of The Holistic CurriculumMany educators have referred to teaching as an art, very few have actually penetrated that question, let alone show what such teaching looks like in practice. Emergent Teaching: A Path of Creativity, Significance, and Transformation treats this topic with a clarity born of a deep understanding of systems thinking and process, one that continuously allows the original insights of their students to emerge. This book succeeds both in articulating the theory and showing how to radically enrich education. -- Renate and Geoffrey Caine, authors of: Natural Learning for a Connected World: Education, Technology, and the Human Brain (2011, Teacher College Press), Strengthening and Enriching your Professional Learning Community: The Art of Learning Together (ASCD, 2010)As states adopt common core standards and school districts ponder scripted curriculum that allegedly ensures that such standards are met, some classroom teachers have sought alternate routes. Emergent Teaching results from teachers' understanding that they can influence but cannot control what occurs in the classroom. Instead, Crowell and Reid-Marr (both, California State Univ.) assert that although teachers may anticipate certain patterns, classroom practice largely involves assisting learners to discover personal significance and creating a sense of belonging. Organized into ten chapters, the book defines emergent teaching and then examines some central tenets of the approach, including the experience of non-separation, event-centric teaching, non-linear instruction, the emergence of understanding, and the roles of play and joy in the classroom. Within these contexts, Crowell and Reid-Marr explore how teachers may encourage creativity, build relevance, and link emergence to the curriculum and other holistic concerns. Clearly written and full of useful examples of emergent teaching in action, the book is a great complement to A. S. Neill and Albert Lamb's Summerhill School (1994) or Maxine Greene's Releasing the Imagination (CH, Apr'96, 33-4642). Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readership levels. * CHOICE *Crowell and Reid- Marr present accessible conversations, reflections and stories that guide the reader through a transdisciplinary approach to teaching. Teachers are offered strategies for emergent teaching that can transform their learning worlds. . . .This work affirms and advances our understanding of transformative education. By interweaving the new sciences, the importance of non-linearity, process, and creativity, Crowell and Reid-Marr offer a significant responsive holistic approach to education that addresses the whole person. . . .The clear style and easily understood ideas make the book suitable for a wide audience, from undergraduates to academics and extends our perspectives to implement transformative learning theory into educational practice. Book SynopsisDeep in Thought provides an introduction to intellectual virtues—the personal qualities and character strengths of good thinkers and learners—and outlines a pragmatic approach for teachers to reinforce them in the classroom. With a combination of theoretical expertise and practical experience, philosopher Jason Baehr endorses intellectual virtues as a rich, meaningful way to think about and understand the purpose of education. He makes a persuasive case for prioritizing intellectual virtues in the classroom to facilitate deeper learning, encourage lifelong learning, and enrich teacher practice. Baehr profiles nine key virtues that enable learners to initiate the process of learning, maintain forward momentum, and overcome common obstacles. With engaging anecdotes and concrete examples, he presents a wealth of principles, postures, and practices that educators can employ in promoting essential habits of mind such as critical thinking and problem solving. Baehr illustrates how opportunities to practice these intellectual habits can be integrated into the classroom in ways that align with current teaching practices. In addition, he shows how educators can adapt these practices to accommodate students’ identities, developmental abilities, and interests. This thought-provoking book supports all educators, especially middle and high school teachers, in teaching for intellectual virtues. Deep in Thought is a philosophical and yet practical guide to one of the most important aims of education: helping students become skilled thinkers and learners.

Barry Joseph, Online Leadership Director, Global Kids "This totally enchanting book shows what education in the 21st century couldlook likeif we are willing to expand our notions of learning in ways that foster productive inquiry and design An extremely readable book that should be on the bookshelf of anyone who cares about having schools that help young people prepare to compete in the global economy." John Seely Brown, Former Chief Scientist of Xerox Corporation and Director of its Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Senior Fellow, Annenberg Center, USC, and co-author, The Social Life of Information and The Only Sustainable Edge "Beautifully written...How Computer Games Help Children Learn breaks new ground in exciting ways. What a treat! A book about the development of innovative thinking that is refreshingly innovative...A tour de force." Deborah Lowe Vandell, Chair, Department of Education, University of California, Irvine "You may have asked yourself if computer games are destroying the minds of our nation's children. How Computer Games Help Children Learn shows that the exact opposite is true. Parents, educators, and computer game makers take note: by combining years of research and his front-line classroom experiences, Shaffer makes a cogent and compelling argument for the educational power of intelligently crafted games that can serve as tools to help children think and learn about real world problems and their solutions." Michael McCormick, Senior Designer, Backbone Entertainment, and Lead Designer of SimCity 4 "Shaffer's book moves from vivid case studies and accessible accounts of key ideas from the learning sciences to practical advice on how parents can help theirchildren learn more from the games they play. This book represents the logical next step in a conversation started by James Paul Gee's What Video GamesHave toTeach Us about Learning and Literacy and Steven Johnson's Everything Bad Is Good For You." Henry Jenkins, Director, Comparative Media Studies Program, MIT "This well-written and important book will introduce parents and teachers to a radical idea: video games can be good for children. When children play games like Sim City or The Oregon Trail, they learn about urban planning or the American West in spite of themselves. But these games are just the tip of the iceberg; Shaffer describes a wide range of fascinating new learning games that are just now emerging...Because these games give children the chance to creatively manipulate a virtual world, they can teach creativity and innovation, abilities that are more important than ever in today's competitive global economy Shaffer advises parents how to pick out a good learning game, how to play it with your children, and how to make sure they are learning from it." R. Keith Sawyer, author of Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration "Shaffer's book points out forcefully a paradigm of future schooling: to better prepare our kids for a globally competitive world, we have to bring the thinking, practices, and cultures of various professions into school learning. With convincing examples of simulated professional games that can integrate learning, working, and playing, he proves that this is feasible." Tak-Wai Chan, National Central University, Taiwan 'This groundbreaking book raises fundamental issues concerning the goals of education and highlights the need for innovative thinkers in the 21st century. Written in a clear, lucid, and direct manner, Shaffer makes his ideas easily accessible to professional as well as lay readers. The book will benefit educators, school administrators, policy makers, and, most importantly, parents.' Yam San Chee, Associate Professor, Learning Sciences & Technologies Academic Group & Learning Sciences Lab, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University "Deep learning, technical learning, learning that leads to the ability to innovate: these are the most important natural resources in our global high-tech world. Will our children be able to compete with kids in China and India? Shaffer shows us how to mine the potential of video game technologies to transform learning at home, in communities, and in schools." James Paul Gee, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author of What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy "Like Dewey, Piaget, and Papert before him, Shaffer challenges us to rethink learning in a new age. He uses vivid examples - backed by solid research - to show what education should look like in the 21st century." - Kurt D. Squire, Assistant Professor of Education, University ofWisconsin-Madison,and Game Designer"A must read for anyone who cares about learning. Game designers depend on having millions of people voluntarily learn more than anyone would dare put into a school curriculum. So studying games - how they are designed and how they are played - is one of the best sources of insight about learning, and Shaffer is an excellent guide to making the most of it." - Seymour Papert, Professor Emeritus, Media and Education Technology, MIT Media LabTable of ContentsForeword: Seeing the Future; J.P.Gee Introduction Epistemology: The Debating Game Knowledge: The Digital Zoo Skills: Escher's World Values: The Pandora Project Identity: Science.net Beyond the Industrial School: The Future of Education and How We Get There
