    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis engagingly written, research- and practice-based book defines how art teachers can build on students' creative initiatives without depending on adult-imposed lesson plans and school requirements. In doing so, art educator and author George Szekely explores the role of the arts in developing children's creativity and sense of purpose, and reminds readers that students in the art classroom are unique artists, designers, and innovators. Against the backdrop of a school culture that over-emphasizes compliance and standardization, Szekely recognizes the importance of the role of the art teacher in supporting the artistic independence and creative flare that occurs naturally in students of all ages in the classroom. Providing real-life examples of classrooms and schools that work towards championing child artists, this text arms teachers with the skills necessary to listen to their students and support them in presenting their ideas in class. Ultimately, Szekely challenTrade Review“Teaching to Support Children’s Artistic Independence: How Children’s Creativity Can Inform Art Education, is a qualitative study of children’s personal stories, experiments and experiences. It describes for teachers the importance of teaching children artistic independence and the power of developing thinking, emotional growth and learning to value the importance and power of a child’s thoughts and how this has a foundation in the art class room. This book is especially important because it’s a testament to children and their development and that they are the stars in the art classroom. The book gives a perspective on the importance of young artists as thinkers, and inventors. It goes further to discuss how young artists should be encouraged to develop their primary thoughts and be encouraged to search for meaning and ways to materialize their thoughts. Ultimately, Szekely states young artists need to value themselves and while doing this they will develop cognitive skills such as the ability to perceive and react, process and understand, store information, make decisions and produce visual images. The book gives rich examples of how making art in the art room can lead to a lifetime of unlimited rich thoughts and creative inventions.” -- Bernard Young, Professor, Arizona State University, USA“George Szekely’s writings and teachings radically challenged my beliefs about Art Education by simply reminding me what it felt like to play, to imagine, to create - not in a way that pleased adults, but in a manner that honored my eight-year-old self. This book pushes me yet again. Szekely's conviction that learners are independent thinkers and makers worthy of respect and support is in conflict with much of the normative thinking that dominates art classrooms across the country. So many young artists have been left behind. When our notions of art conflict with their curiosities, wonderings and aesthetic preferences, we send a clear message: art is not for you. In a Szekely classroom, we don’t teach, per say, but rather, collaborate. We are granted a gift of insight. Through the artists in our midst, we experience the world not as it is, but as it can be.” -- Cindy M. Foley, Executive Assistant Director, Director of Learning and Experience, Columbus Museum of Art, USA“Drawing on a lifetime of experience in engaging young learners, Szekely shows a profound respect for children as competent, imaginative visionaries who are ready, with strategic prompts from their teacher, to joyfully explore and manipulate their own worlds. Anyone entrusted with the creative development of children will appreciate his lively practical guidance and insightful pedagogical tips.” -- Richard Siegesmund, Professor Emeritus, Art and Design Education, Northern Illinois University, USA“The publication a new book by George Szekely is cause for celebration in the community of art educators who support student choice and agency. He writes passionately about the gifts, abilities and ideas of even the youngest students. He challenges teachers and schools to notice and embrace these gifts so children can grow as independent makers. Incorporating play and surprise to engage his students he offers them the stage to share what fills their pockets and their imaginations.”-- Katherine Douglas, co-founder Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), Massachusetts College of Art and Design TAB Institute, Massachusetts, USATable of ContentsSection 1: Reimagining Art Teaching 1: A New Mindset2: Finding the Artist in Every Student3: Qualities of an Independent Artist4: Creating the Art Class5: A Different Kind of Art ClassSection 2: Relationships in the Classroom6: The Unknown and the Individual in the Art Class7: Building Relationships with Art Students8: Students Seeing Themselves as Artists9: When Art Becomes DifficultSection 3: Home and School Art10: Separating Art from School11: Students Beyond the Art Class12: Bridging the Gap Between School and Home Art13: Adults United14: Art Lessons as Life Lessons

Book SynopsisUniversity Challenge: Critical Issues for Teaching and Learning offers a nuanced and critical reading of university teaching, particularly the pressures under which academics in neoliberal, mass higher education must operate. It provides exciting thinking about slow pedagogies, powerful knowledge, the assessment arms race and the concept of vanilla teaching. Eight challenges currently encountered by those who teach in higher education are carefully examined. These include: teaching to meet all studentsâ needs; assessment and grading; learning to teach; and space and time in academic life. The research that underpins this work came from an international study and a conceptual re-evaluation of current practices, theories and the values of teaching and higher education. The author brings a rich understanding of university teaching as a critical and values-laden process, exploring important debates about the extent and limits of teachersâ and studentsâ responsibility in teaching and learning. The conceptual foundations provide a distinctive angle on some of the persistent problems which dog twenty-first-century academics working in marketised, mass higher education. This book will appeal to university teachers who wish to develop their work through scholarly enquiry and will be a resource to inform policy and management around teaching and curriculum.Table of ContentsList of illustrationsAcknowledgementsPrefaceChapter 1. Book SynopsisThis is a book about the ethics of teaching in the context of higher education. While many books focus on the broader socially ethical topics of widening participation and promoting equal opportunities, this unique book concentrates specifically on the lecturer's professional responsibilities. It covers the real-life, messy, everyday moral dilemmas that confront university teachers when dealing with students and colleagues - whether arising from facilitated discussion in the classroom, deciding whether it is fair to extend a deadline, investigating suspected plagiarism or dealing with complaints. Bruce Macfarlane analyses the pros and cons of prescriptive professional codes of practice employed by many universities and proposes the active development of professional virtues over bureaucratic recommendations. The material is presented in a scholarly, yet accessible style, and case examples are used throughout to encourage a practical, reflective approach.Teaching With IntTrade Review'Overall, this is an enjoyable book written in a lucid style with clear guidelines, supported by case studies ... Put forward as fresh thought on the processes and contexts of higher education teaching, the book provides practical guidance on professional and ethical aspects of university teaching and is a reminder to senior university management of the intrinsically valuable and difficult task of teaching in a mass higher education context.' - William Scarff, University of Wolverhampton Business School, UKReviewed in the Times Higher Education Supplement 'Ethics means a degree of trust' - '[Bruce Macfarlane] argues that in order for learners to think critically and challenge conventional wisdom, the lecturer's first ethical consideration must be to protect and foster student academic freedom.' Book SynopsisNew Pop-Up Paper Projects is an inspirational book for everyone who wants to learn and share the magic of pop-up paper engineering. Illustrated throughout with colour diagrams and photographs, this book guides you through basic techniques and foundation skills, offers advice on classroom planning and health and safety and shows you how to ensure that learners of all ages can develop and progress their skills.Guiding you through 90-, 180- and 360-degree engineering, this book presents step-by-step instructions and ideas for over 200 cross-curricular themes, from cityscapes to magical creatures. Aiming to challenge and inspire, Paul Johnson uses over 150 paper-engineering techniques, including: storybooks pop-ups without folds zigzag pop-ups pulleys, wheels and levers asymmetrical pop-ups intricate toy theatres diagonal pop-ups with movables. This book, brimming with pop-up techniques and how to teach them, is for everyone â from the self-styled âvisually illiterateâ to the art graduate, from parents keeping creativity alive at home to classroom teachers planning an engaging curriculum for their class of 30 plus pupils.Trade ReviewAs a primary school teacher, I can find design and technology projects a bit daunting. Almost nothing frustrates me more than having a class full of children making a mess with paper, scissors and glue. However, a book like this has the potential to transform that teacher’s nightmare into creative bliss, fuelling the children’s imaginations and turning those sheets of paper into imaginative and exciting creations. From a stand-alone project, something to keep children amused during free time, or a cross-curricular topic, this is a valuable resource for anyone who works with, or has, children. The book is divided into two main sections, with progressively harder designs. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, accompanied by labelled diagrams, which will appeal especially to visual learners. At the start of the book is a list of thematic contents, making it quick and easy to refer to something specific - from Little Red Riding Hood, to Macbeth, it could be an interesting way of engaging children in literature, for example, by bringing the stories alive. What I find particularly interesting about this book, is the fact that there are no precise measurements for the designs, making room for individuality and a little creative licence. Ultimately, as the author himself states, "making things with the hands is at the core of learning", and this book facilitates that in a wonderful way. I am looking forward to creating some interesting things with my pupils! Carly Neighbour, Primary School TeacherTable of Contents1. Making 90-degree pop-ups 2. Vertical boxes 3. Horizontal boxes 4. Book SynopsisAutism is a complex and often puzzling disorder in which pinning down a set of rules surrounding the teaching of children with it is almost impossible to do. Many theories and approaches claim to have the solution to teaching, yet few provide the answers when an autistic child goes against the status quo.Autism and Learning addresses this problem with a principled approach that is based on the understanding of the pedagogy and psychology of autism. It shows how theory can influence practice and sets out a cognitive view of the relationship between learning and autism whilst explaining how the curriculum must be constructed as to accommodate that relationship. The book also sets out principles of pedagogy and illustrates their application.Written by practitioners experienced in teaching children with autism, the book covers examples of good practice in the most salient areas of the curriculum including: Developing play GroTable of ContentsPreface for this special edition 1. Taylor & Francis Teaching as a Design Science Building Pedagogical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTeaching is changing. It is no longer simply about passing on knowledge to the next generation. Teachers in the twenty-first century, in all educational sectors, have to cope with an ever-changing cultural and technological environment. Teaching is now a design science. Like other design professionals â architects, engineers, programmers â teachers have to work out creative and evidence-based ways of improving what they do. Yet teaching is not treated as a design profession. Every day, teachers design and test new ways of teaching, using learning technology to help their students. Sadly, their discoveries often remain local. By representing and communicating their best ideas as structured pedagogical patterns, teachers could develop this vital professional knowledge collectively.Teacher professional development has not embedded in the teacherâs everyday role the idea that they could discover something worth communicating to other teachers, or build on each othersâ ideas. Could the culture change? From this unique perspective on the nature of teaching, Diana Laurillard argues that a twenty-first century education system needs teachers who work collaboratively to design effective and innovative teaching.Trade ReviewAll the national and international accolades that appear in the book and on the back cover of Teaching as a Design Science are justly deserved; this is an innovative endeavor by a visionary author, Diana Laurillard. This text is rich in research studies and the use of digital technologies to enhance learning." —Teachers College Record "The book is written for teachers at all levels, although it will probably be of primary interest to higher education faculty who have the time and resources to explore the ideas presented. It will also be valuable to educational researchers for [Laurillard’s] very thorough summary and synthesis of the literature pertaining to teaching, technology, and the design of instruction."—Educational TechnologyTable of ContentsChapter 1: Teaching as a design science The role of technology Learning about teaching Education as a design science Design patterns for learning The foundations for teaching as design Chapter 2: What is formal learning? The teacher-based vignettes provide meaningful, practical connections between the act of reflection and the act of teaching.” Melanie Shoffner, Purdue University, USA“Few authors manage to handle the complexity inherent in teaching as accessibly as Zeichner and Liston, without losing any of the nuance and subtlety needed to address these issues. Book SynopsisWhat is experiential education? What are its theoretical roots? Where does this approach come from? Offering a fresh and distinctive take, this book is about going beyond learning by doing through an exploration of its underlying theoretical currents. As an increasingly popular pedagogical approach, experiential education encompasses a variety of curriculum projects from outdoor and environmental education to service learning and place-based education. While each of these sub-fields has its own history and particular approach, they draw from the same progressive intellectual taproot. Each, in its own way, evokes the power of learning by doing and direct experience in the educational process. By unpacking the assumed homogeneity in these terms to reveal the underlying diversity of perspectives inherent in their usage, this book allows readers to see how the approaches connect to larger conversations and histories in education and social theory, placing experiential education iTrade Review"This book does make a significant contribution to experiential education and it will make an invaluable resource for those researching and working in experiential education. Barringer shows how using what we know about learning variation with a focus on discovering learning strengths, not just deficits, can help schools create plans for success for those students who often find it elusive. The book specifically addresses how school leaders can incorporate this knowledge into instructional practice and school-level policy through various professional development strategies.
