Book SynopsisIn The Handbook of Existential Coaching Practice, Monica Hanaway presents a complete introduction to existential coaching, focusing on how coaches can incorporate key skills in all aspects of their practice. Practical and theoretical, the book explores how existential thought can offer a fresh re-orientation of coaching practice that embraces uncertainty, working towards a deeper understanding of the clientâs world and the challenges they face in the twenty-first century. This comprehensive guide is presented in two parts, bringing together theoretical coaching models and Hanawayâs extensive practical experience. In Part 1, Hanaway begins by clearly exploring what is meant by existential coaching and places it in the context of contemporary coaching culture, illuminating the key philosophical elements of the existential coaching approach and the differences between existential coaching and existential psychotherapy. In Part 2, Hanaway draws from her own experience and presents case studies to demonstrate how coaches can build relationships with clients, enabling them to face existential dilemmas in their organisational and social life to become their authentic self. She introduces key existential concepts relating to authenticity, relatedness, freedom, responsibility, values and beliefs, and encourages the reader to explore how these are relevant to the coaching process. The book includes case studies, questioning and reflective exercises to encourage development of good practice and build the skills necessary all the way through a coaching relationship, from contracting to ending. This is the first guide of its kind, with Hanaway playing an instrumental role in the development and growth of existential coaching as well as designing the one of the worldâs first University-accredited MA programmes. It will be essential reading for coaches in practice and in training, as well as students and academics of applied philosophy and psychology. Trade Review‘Monica Hanaway provides a boutique style of coaching in several different environments from a private space in a clinic, to the wider corporate world, up to the retirement and post-retirement stage. Her attitude to the ‘what now?’ or ‘what next?’ offers a fresh and versatile way of doing coaching, which is non-prescriptive, not overly reliant on technique, and where the subject precedes the object. Having practiced existential coaching for many years, Hanaway describes how the phenomenological-ontological space of exploration, transforms life as to become truly worth living. Even when enough money is earned, goals are reached, career changes are considered, CHOICE becomes the essence for change. The model is shown to work well in both the professional and personal spheres.’ - Claire Francica, Existential Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Malta‘Monica has a special ability to draw out disparate views, provide constructive challenge and provide innovative perspectives that allow individuals to reach consensus. In the context of our fast-paced business, Monica’s coaching practices have proved invaluable, helping to create close-knit and highly performing teams. Having had the pleasure of watching her expertly coax out the underlying issues in the driving behaviour of passionate and knowledgeable people, I am a full convert to her approach to both team and self-improvement. I would have no reservations in recommending this book to anyone wishing to use coaching to develop their leadership skills.’ - John Davison; CEO FCG Guernsey‘Existential Coaching skills are very practical and yet immensely inspired instruments for coaches to use in addressing people's difficulties in living. Monica Hanaway has been fine tuning these skills for many years and you will find this summary to the point and indispensable to your coaching practice.’ - Prof. Emmy van Deurzen PhD, MPsych, MPhil, FBPsS, CPsychol, FBACP, UKCPF, HCPCreg, Principal NSPC ‘Coaching provides businesses, from large corporates to small, privately owned firms, with a distinctive edge. External coaching offers a unique viewpoint that simply cannot be readily achieved from an in-house position. Working creatively with people and facilitating positive, often necessary change, highlighting skills and co-creating a vision that fits into the values of the people and the business alike – this is priceless, no matter what one’s role in an organisation. Monica writes from the distinct perspective of a successful business leader who, recognising the need for external feedback of a multi-disciplinary approach, emerged as a highly skilled and effective coach. Drawing on her experience as a coach, mediator, psychotherapist, supervisor, lecturer and following decades of teaching and mentoring, this book provides the framework for the application and key tools and techniques for coaching from an Existential perspective. Monica passes this knowledge on in the most effective way in her new book. As an attendee of her workshops, I have witnessed her expert ability to tease out the significant, introspective questions that gently challenge one to reflect upon core values or behaviours that may subtly conflict with the goals of the business. The impact upon our Practice in just one day was invaluable, and I have to attribute this to the exclusivity of the Existential approach to coaching. Our staff will read this and continue to engage in the reflective practices that will enable them to develop as effective mentors to their colleagues. Their efficacy in utilising these skills today is primarily due to the external support they have received. Thus, I would highly recommend this book to students, coaches, managers and anyone wishing to progress effectively and ethically in business.’ - Marni Eisenberg; MA, MBACP, UKCP, MPED, IRegNutrClinical Director & Therapist Queens Road Practice, Guernsey‘Coaching is of great value to all leaders. Leaders are responsible for their companies and must exhibit many qualities, such as honesty, trustworthiness and ethics. Leaders must display the company’s values and be responsible for, and inspire, others’ success in the company. This is quite a challenge, especially for those new to positions of responsibility. Whether leaders are born or made is an eternal question, but what is certain is that coaching helps leaders to unlock their potential and develop their own authentic style. External coaches can offer neutral impartial advice and insights to develop this leadership potential. Coaching outcomes assist ambitions to becoming an effective leader and are personal to individuals, but include: Focusing of values driven leadership and decision making Improving self-confidence and human effectiveness Learning to trust and delegate to your team Developing healthy and sustainable work life balance and relationships Having effective leaders gives the company a competitive advantage in the industry and a strong sense of purpose, which impacts the bottom line and value of the company. Monica draws on over 20 years’ experience as a senior leader, strategist and policy maker, having had a team of over 500 working to her and managing a budget of over £15million. Her unique, quietly spoken, flexible yet firm, existential approach goes deeply to the root of issues, drawing on her experience of mediating, dispute resolution and coaching. This existential approach provides a unique focus on human life, that is so relevant to coaching. The steps are laid out within the pages of the ‘Handbook of Existential Coaching Practice’ in easy to follow and implement chapters, which is useful to new leaders and experienced leaders alike.’ -Ben Virgo; Director HS, London, UK‘Everyone can benefit through the use of a coach. In business, such a relationship is becoming increasingly common for those in managerial and leadership positions. An external coach provides a safe and neutral space to discuss any concerns and to look creatively and critically at potential developments. Monica Hanaway moves away from some of the more directive coaching styles offering a deeper approach based on Existential philosophy. This approach is laid out clearly in this book which is useful to coaches, students and coaching clients’- Monica Tyler; CEO Vauxhall City Farm, London, UK‘Monica has worked with a number of senior people in our geographically and culturally diverse organisation, as a coach and a trainer. Her unique existential approach to coaching works well with such diversity and is open to working with different world views. This handbook sets out simply and clearly the existential approach she uses focusing on the philosophical and psychological factors in play in the client’s dilemma.’- Mirjam Buyteweg; IFRS The International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation, London, UK‘Monica Hanaway has been playing an instrumental role in the development and growth of the existential approach to coaching. She designed the world’s first University-accredited MA programme and published the definitive skills handbook on the topic. I recommend the Handbook of Existential Coaching Practice to all coaches interested in enriching their practice and deepening their understanding of what every clients, regardless of their presenting issue, brings into the coaching space: their human condition. Monica does a magnificent job illuminating the challenges and possibilities of working existentially with clients and manages to translate complex existential ideas into tangible ways of using them to work with clients across a range of sectors and circumstances. A must-read for every practitioner looking to take their coaching to the next level.’ - Yannick Jacob; Existential Coach (MA), Positive Psychologist (MSc), Coach Trainer & Supervisor (FMR Programme Leader MSc Coaching Psychology), Mediator (conflict resolution) and author of An Introduction to Existential Coaching (Routledge)‘Monica Hanaway highlights the key principles of Existential perspectives and uses them to create an overarching framework that coaches can apply strategically to the complexity of their clients’ dilemmas. We are shown how to develop a trusting relationship in which clients can examine the meanings and values underpinning their day to day experiences. Two coaching models, MOVER and CREATE, form guides for people to see themselves and their context with greater clarity, to identify clashes with personal values and then to commit to routes for meaningful change. Expressed in this way, the task appears straightforward, but the process and any resultant commitments require courage. How can we provide the right conditions for that courageous change? Hanaway provides informative case studies to illustrate how the existential coach can foster a relationship of ‘challenging depth’ where the client can face the inevitable dilemmas, anxieties and uncertainties of their existence and do so in a manner that acts as a beacon for living authentically. This book will curl at the edges through repeated reading.’ - Dr Mark Burgess; Research Lead and Teaching Fellow (Social Psychology), Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK‘In uncertain times people need the opportunity to engage with the challenges being provoked - personal, interpersonal or organisational. Monica addressed the issues directly raised through leadership roles in her previous two books on Leadership. In this book she extends the field of work offering a handbook to all coaches seeking to use an existential approach in exploring practical questions within the uncertainties of living. The book combines the theoretical and the practical.’ - Professor Ernesto Spinelli; author of Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World ‘Careers move very fast! It is important to enjoy what you do and how you do it! Part of the enjoyment is about your growth and development. I believe that growth through coaching can be an effective and delightful experience. To have an experienced specialist who wishes to focus on your strengths and challenges is highly valuable. At points in my career I have greatly benefited from a coach. The IFRS Foundation recognises the importance of coaching and integrates its practices with our people. In this book Monica gives insight into the existential model she works with.’ - Lee White; Executive Director IFRS (The International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation)‘This handbook offers a definitive guide to the application of existential philosophy to coaching practice. An existential approach to coaching can offer individuals a new understanding of life and the predicaments and challenges that we all face. This book offers both theoretical and practical elements, enabling an understanding of existential philosophy as well as its application to coaching skills. This book is essential reading for all practitioners but particularly coaching students.’ – Dr Claire Arnold-Baker; counselling psychologist; existential therapist; perinatal specialist; supervisor and trainer, DCPsych Programme Leader, joint programme with Middlesex University & New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, UK‘Hanaway has produced a handbook that provides a re-orientation of coaching practice from an emphasis on what the coach does towards a deeper understanding and exploration of the client’s world and vicissitudes of life. Through the presentation of case material she illustrates how to develop a client-coach relationship that enables the client to examine and face the existential dilemmas of organisational and social life. She explains and expounds existential philosophy and convincingly integrates it into a novel style of coaching practice. Management consultants and coaches will find this approach, and this handbook, essential when helping clients reconcile ambiguities in their lives and develop authentic change.’ - Prof John Nuttall; Assistant Dean and Head of School of Psychotherapy and Psychology, Regent’s University London, UK; Certified Management Consultant ‘In these times when it seems we are surrounded by insurmountable problems and bombarded by noise in the system, it can often feel like change is impossible, be it at a personal, relational, organisational or community level. An existential approach invites us to take a deeper look at the thinking we have learned to rely upon to solve these issues, in order that we might challenge and expand our possibilities for making changes that matter. Monica Hanaway provides a crucial toolkit that goes well beyond traditional coaching methods, which are now increasingly redundant in times of extreme uncertainty. Monica herself has used the wisdom in her book in practical ways both with individuals and across a wide range of diverse organisations for many years. Her clients will all tell you that her approach is effective and long lasting, because it catalyses the right conversations and doesn’t shy away from asking the questions that will get to the heart of the matter. In short, the existential coaching approach wakes us up and holds us to account for living a more authentic life. A thoroughly recommended read for all coaching practitioners and leaders looking to support people to find meaning in their work and life.’ - Jill McMillan; CEO Jill McMillan Associates - Leadershaping, Cambridge, UK‘Monica Hanaway provides a boutique style of coaching in several different environments from a private space in a clinic, to the wider corporate world, up to the retirement and post-retirement stage. It provides a frame within which we can more easily notice and understand the voice of the unconscious and its implications, allowing us to build deeper relationships and lead more meaningful lives. In this book, Laurence Barrett explores the fundamental principles and structures of Jung''s model of the mind and considers ways in which these may be applied and extended to a modern coaching and consulting practice. Book SynopsisWinner of the 1988 Clark Vincent Award for an outstanding contribution to the profession through a literary work and translated into four languages, the original edition of Therapeutic Metaphors for Children and the Child Within was considered a groundbreaking addition to the field of child and adolescent psychotherapy. The 1986 edition was the firstand to this day the onlybook that solely intertwines the extraordinary foundational teachings and philosophies of Milton H. Erickson and creative healing approaches for children and adolescents. With resiliency at its core, this revision now brings forward important topics related to neurobiology and cultural value of metaphor and play, along with fresh case examples and creative activities to a new generation of mental health, education, and coaching professionals. Trade Review"If you work with kids, read this book: it will expand your therapeutic skills. This book will magnify your healing power and remind you what you like best about doing the work you do."—Carl A. Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the mid 20th century, O. Hobart Mowrer was a celebrated academic psychologist, owing largely to his experiments with animals and humans that led to breakthrough theories on how we learn. His numerous publications in this arena propelled him to the post of President of the American Psychological Association in 1954. His own battles with depression led him to develop a new theory of psychotherapy, which he called Integrity Therapy. The premise of this modality is that the client's deception with people they care about is the source of conscience pangs, but the client resists or represses the prompting of the conscience and this causes his or her psychological symptoms. Treatment, therefore, consists of urging the client to acknowledge his or her hidden behaviors to themselves and to significant others that they might both gain restored community with intimates and the fruits of personal integrity and inner peace ( to come clean about their deceptions and rewarding the confession wiTrade Review"One of the more interesting aspects of this book is the combination of Mowrer’s theory and an introduction to clinical work. It has applications in health and social care, the voluntary sector and is relevant to work with people who are severely mentally and emotionally distressed. As well as being a valuable sourcebook and offering a comprehensive overview, this edition includes updated references and a new section on recent developments and advances. The book begins with a consideration of the principles and philosophy underpinning person-centred therapy before moving to a comprehensive discussion of the classical theory upon which practice is based. Further areas of discussion include:The model of the person, including the origins of mental and emotional distressThe process of constructive changeA review of revisions of and additions to person-centred theoryChild development, styles of processing and configurations of selfThe quality of presence and working at relational depthCriticisms of the approach are addressed and rebutted and the application of theory to practice is discussed. The new final section is concerned with advances and developments in theory and practice including:Counselling for DepressionThe Social Dimension to Person-Centred TherapyPerson-Centred Practice with People experiencing Severe and Enduring Distress and at the âDifficult EdgeâA Review of ResearchThroughout the book, attention is drawn to the wider person-centred literature to which it is a valuable key.Person-Centred Therapy will be of particular use to students, scholars and practitioners of person-centred therapy as well as to anyone who wants to know more about one of the major psychotherapeutic modalities. Trade ReviewAs a succinct overview of person-centred theory and practice, this book is a valuable handbook for students as they move through their training and into the early stages of practice. It offers an up-to-date guide to the key concepts, discussions and controversies in contemporary person-centred counselling. The development of theoretical ideas is presented as a natural process, inspired by research and practice. The inclusion of child development and the impact of social and environmental forces on psychological distress offer welcome additions to mainstream person-centred thinking. - Connie Johnson, Senior Teaching Fellow, University of Edinburgh; Counsellor and supervisor in private practice. This is an extraordinarily important book. Paul Wilkins did a great job in combining scholarly profound descriptions of the person-centred essentials with a clear and easy-to-read language. It serves the academic as well as the practitioner as both introduction and reference book to a wide range of topics from the philosophical underpinnings via an overview of criticisms and thoughtful rebuttals to the social dimensions and (as a new section to the second edition) recent developments . I like particularly that Wilkins thoroughly follows Rogers’ original intentions in describing the core values of a truly client-centred approach to psychotherapy and at the same time does justice to the different branches and developments that originated the classical endeavour.- Peter F. Book SynopsisIn common with Therapeutic Practice in Schools: Working with the Child Within (Routledge 2012), this second volume serves as a practical handbook for school-based counsellors, psychotherapists, arts therapists and play therapists working with young people. Written in accessible language, it is eminently applicable to the practice of both qualified and trainee therapists.Therapeutic Practice in Schools: The Contemporary Adolescent begins with an overview of key psychoanalytic ideas informing our understanding of adolescence before moving on to focus on life circumstances and issues which commonly bring young people to the therapistâs consulting room in the school. Dedicated chapters on key themes including identity, relationships, sex and sexuality, anger issues, self-harm, bereavement and bullying aim to deepen our understanding of the adolescent experience while also providing the therapist with invaluable insights into what one might say in the âhere and nowâ of the session. Chapter authors, all with considerable experience in the field, discuss approaches to sustaining the therapeutic relationship in the face of ambivalence or defiant resistance as well as thinking about the impact of social media on all aspects of adolescent development. The advantages and limitations of working with adolescents in the educational setting where school staff will have their own reasons for referring students for therapy, while the young people themselves might come with a very different agenda, are also covered. It is widely acknowledged that engaging troubled or troublesome adolescents in therapy can make an enormous difference to their lives. This book ensures that both trainee and qualified therapists are supported in the often daunting yet ever stimulating and enlivening task of working with young people in the school setting. Trade Review"The authors convey so clearly the essential ingredients of psychoanalytically influenced therapy – being open- minded without preconceptions, listening both to the adolescent’s feelings and those brought up in themselves, providing opportunity for expression and understanding and opening up the possibilities of different ways of looking at things. Intended primarily as clinical workbook for counsellors, psychotherapists and arts therapists, there is more than enough in this book to engage anybody interested in young people." – Peter Wilson, Founder of Young Minds and Clinical Advisor for The Place 2 Be, from the Foreword. Book SynopsisNature-Based Play Therapy brings a theoretical basis to arguments for including nature in play therapy and provides tools for that inclusion with a prescriptive model. Throughout this book, play therapists are introduced to the histories of nature and play across cultures and cultural expectations and are then guided into an understanding of how nature and play intersect with current trends in society and psychotherapy. Readers will learn about how the therapeutic powers of play are activated and facilitated by the inclusion of nature in play therapy, and they will be taken step-by-step through a prescriptive case conceptualization model. They'll also find case studies that link theoretical tenets, the therapeutic powers and play and nature, and intended treatment outcomes.Nature-Based Play Therapy is an excellent introduction to a vital and growing area of the field, one that gives a well-rounded summary to a theoretically based model of treatment.Trade Review"Grounded in prescriptive play therapy, Dr. Nash’s clinical wisdom invites us to join her in the connective nexus between nature and play. Readers discover historical, cultural, and ethical insights mixed with relevant case examples that redefine the traditional ‘playroom space.’ What differentiates this text is Nash’s sequential model of case conceptualization, clinical reasoning, and decision making. The model challenges us to understand the client's needs, characteristics of play, and the matching of theoretical orientations to both the therapeutic powers of nature and play—all before ever considering the utilization of any technique. Integrative and inspiring!"Mary Anne Peabody, EdD, LCSW, RPT-S, associate professor of social and behavioral sciences, University of Southern Maine"Grounded in thorough research yet written for practical application, Nature-Based Play Therapy is a fusion of the core tenets of play therapy and nature. This text will complement play therapists' knowledge, perspective, further growth, and will benefit those they teach and/or serve."Franc Hudspeth, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, ACS, RPT-S, RPh, chair of counselor education at Sacred Heart University"This book is so needed in our field! Julie Nash grounds the growing interest in nature play therapy in theory and research. She sets the context with a brief review of the role of nature in history and religion. Then, very insightful and detailed chapters intersect nature with the seminal play therapy theories and the therapeutic powers of play. A very practical chapter of case studies reveals how to conceptualize and implement nature-based play therapy. Throughout, Julie interweaves her family’s experience in nature. This is an enjoyable, solid, must-read book for those who want to be well-grounded in nature-based play therapy!"Linda E. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book encourages and trains students and practicing marriage and family therapists to bring themselves into the therapy room, offering guidelines and strategies for being more present and personal with their clients.Mental health professionals are often taught and trained that therapy is serious business, to be cautious and conservative with therapeutic decision-making, and to stick to empirically supported and specific tools in sessions. What gets lost in this positivistic, formulaic, and scientific way of working are therapistsâ own unique voices, their creativity, flexibility, and the sense of playfulness that make the change process fun and upbeat. The Therapistâs Use of Self equips therapists with the skills they need to deepen their alliances with clients, to liberate themselves from an overreliance on models, and to bring their whole selves to the therapeutic encounter. Chapters cover pioneers in the field before exploring ways to bring ideas from outside thTrade Review“This book had me at the start; the analysis of the family therapy pioneers was the best I’d ever read. But then Selekman takes it a quantum leap further—capturing the true essence of conceptualizing and doing couple and family therapy, drawing on contemporary research and his own wisdom accrued from extensive experience in the trenches.”Barry L. Duncan, Psy.D., developer of the Partners for Change Outcome Management System, USA"Selekman has done it again. A book for any practitioner, chock-full of wisdom, guidance and encouragement to be more of ourselves as a therapist. After an affectionate review of the old masters of family therapy, Selekman gives us a creative and wide-ranging set of ideas to help us become more courageous as therapists. An aspiring read!"Guy Diamond, Professor Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, USA"Matthew Selekman’s brilliant new book about the therapist’s use of self is exactly the book the field of relational and systemic therapies needs at this time. Wonderfully anchored in and appropriately paying homage to the pioneers of the field, Selekman provides the reader with a much-needed update of how to be most positively engaged and effective in these times. Building on a clear vision of the use of self in therapy that includes a very practical use-of-self toolkit, he offers inventive frameworks for therapeutic decision-making and ways of collaborating with clients to find innovative ways to resolve problems. Filled with poignant clinical examples and the wisdom of a seasoned therapist who has supervised couple and family therapy around the world, this is a book every couple and family therapist and student in the field should read and contemplate."Jay Lebow, Ph.D., ABPP, Senior Scholar and Clinical Professor, The Family Institute at Northwestern and Northwestern University, USA "As I began reading the first two chapters, my experience was of a travel along a memory lane, remembering the workshops and seminars I had the opportunity to enjoy with those incredible persons. By chapter four I was more on the transition to present time. Then I remember the time machine exercise Selekman uses. And of course, the next chapters moved me to the future use of his exercises. Book SynopsisProviding both a depth and breadth of examples of ethical dilemmas which coaches may face as part of their practice, this book is the first comprehensive handbook of case studies in the field, supporting coaches in developing their ethical awareness and competence. The world of coaching has become increasingly complex over the past two decades. While the professional bodies have all released codes of conduct or ethical guidelines, these at best deal with general principles and serve as a point of reference for reflection. Ethical Case Studies for Coach Development and Practice is an essential accompaniment for coaches. Written by seasoned practitioners, this companion coaching case study book offers a more personal perspective on ethics in practice. Its simple structured layout and focus on ethical dilemmas make it an attractive course supplementary text and resource for practitioners. Divided into two sections, the guide explores the following themes: ethical developmeTrade Review'We learn best through real stories, and this book offers us 40 riveting examples of actual ethical coaching dilemmas. What would you do if you were the coach? Sneak behind the scenes with the expert coaches as they navigate through very tricky waters. The answers may not be as simple as you think!'Brian O. Underhill, PhD, PCC; Founder and CEO, CoachSource, LLC 'This new book provides a wealth of material through a case study approach, exploring many of the contemporary ethical dilemmas faced by coaches today from AI to race and from gender to managing multiple stakeholders. This text will be an essential addition to every coach's library.'Prof. Jonathan Passmore, Henley Business School, UK'What I loved about this book is that, at the same time as clearly having serious, theoretical or research-based underpinnings, these case studies are immensely readable and the lessons to be learned from them are clearly spelled out. I love a good case study and here we are spoiled for choice. Their strength is the way that they bring theory to life. We can talk about ethics in coaching and supervision at a conceptual level until the cows come home but the learning really begins when our CEO client walks into the coaching space at 10am and we can smell whisky on their breath. What do we actually do? The case studies that make up this very helpful book explore both straight-forward and very complex issues and cover one-to-one coaching, team coaching, and supervision in both internal and external coaching scenarios. The sheer breadth of ethical challenges presented is ultra-stimulating and a great way of helping the reader to examine and explore their own prejudices, biases, beliefs, and values and how they affect the decisions we take in and outside the coaching/supervision room. The later chapters explore the ethical challenges that the digital age has brought with it - managing digital records, avoiding data breaches, the role of AI, etc. - and handling challenges around diversity in its many forms. Very thoughtful stuff. This book would be a worthwhile addition to any coach's bookshelf.'Katharine St John-Brooks, Author of Internal Coaching: The Inside Story 'This book represents an important contribution in the exploration of ethics in coaching. The introductory chapter explores how learning in coach education and development is significantly enhanced using case studies. Chapter Two provides a thorough summary of how case studies have been used as a learning tool in well-established fields of study and offer the coach practitioner an in depth understanding of case formulation, why it matters, and the task is approached. The authors caution us there is no one right way, and they offer the reader several frameworks that allow a coach to maximize in-depth learning from a case study whether in the midst of a coach education experience, coach supervision, or self-directed learning.'Pam McLean, Co-founder, CKO, Hudson Institute of Coaching'Ethics in Coaching is core to the sustainability of the coaching profession and the sustainable practice of a coach. Ethical Case Studies book is practical, useful, and essential reading for coaches and coaching buyers. The book may invite coaches to reflect upon their previous and ongoing practice and help them to raise awareness and take charge of their development and refine their coaching practice.'Dr. Badri Bajaj, Coaching thought leader, President - ICF Delhi NCR Charter Chapter 2019-2021 and 2021-2023'Kurt Lewin famously noted that nothing is so practical as a good theory. A very close second to that would be good quality case studies to learn from experience, and this book hits it out of the park in this regard.'Aaron Jarden, Associate Professor, Centre for Wellbeing Science, University of Melbourne, Australia Table of ContentsAcknowlegements Editors Contributors Part One: Working with Case Studies for Coach Ethical Development 1. Book SynopsisThe Relationship Cards are 48 emotive and artistic images designed to help people to review the key relationships in their lives in a meaningful and often transformative way. The cards provide an engaging way for people to talk about and clarify their feelings, while reflecting on what they value in their relationships and what they might want to change. Spanning both positive and negative states in relationships, the cards show themes such as trust, resentment, fear of abandonment, drifting apart, encouragement and feeling supported. The accompanying booklet explains how to use the cards with participants in a supportive and safe way to facilitate deeper conversations about relationships with people in their lives, past and present. Accompanying translations are provided in German, French, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese. This beautiful resource can be used by educators, therapists or anyone wishing to open a dialogue about relationshTrade ReviewJulia Bird, Director of ThriveI am a founding director of a company that supports approximately 1,800 adults working in education to understand if a child has emotional developmental interruptions and what to do to make a difference. We train many teachers and other adults working in schools. Margot Sunderland’s books are recommended reading for those who attend our courses. Our trainees find the Draw On books very helpful in training and then also with their children - not just those children identified for special help. They deal with universal life themes relevant for all. I particularly like the theoretical explanation mixed with superb, doable activities/exercises and copyable handouts.Margot is an acknowledged expert in her field and her passion to make such important understandings and ways of working with troubled children accessible to ordinary people - parents, teachers, support workers - is manifest in the old excellent editions. Her suggestions for the new editions for both books are really exciting. I certainly will recommend the new editions to the people with whom I work. What is needed are work books that give the basic theoretical understanding - e.g. why using imagery is a potent way of supporting children to process feelings - with very usable activities that ordinary people can use to great effect with their children or with the children with whom they work. The addition of the cards will help adults open the conversation with children/young people about difficult feelings. These are a real improvement on the books as they stand now. To have images that are so evocative will enhance the dialogue and give opportunities for all involved to tickle the imagination and make more sense and help the children digest their emotional responses to life situations that cause them such pain and difficulty. The new suggestions will take the work with children from labelling feelings without a real connection to deeper meaning to an integration of feelings, imagination and language that deepen awareness and supports emotional development. The cards will not go out of date as I imagine they will illustrate life’s difficulties that are timeless.I absolutely support the need for updated editions of these superb books and think the cards to be incredibly helpful in supporting children to tell their stories and process trauma.Table of Contents48 picture cards each with an image and short caption covering different types of relationships and ways of relatingShort booklet covering suggested usage of the cards and guidance around integrating the productive longer term counselling provided in the linked book, Draw on Your Relationships Captions and booklet translated into German, French, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese

Book SynopsisEmotion-focused therapy is a research-informed psychological therapy that to date has mainly been studied in the context of depression, trauma and couple distress. The evidence suggests that this therapy has a lasting and transformative effect. Ladislav Timulak presents EFT as a particular therapeutic approach that addresses psychological human suffering, offering a view that puts more emphasis on attending to the distress, rather than avoiding or suppressing it. Focusing on the latest developments in EFT, Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy presents a theory of human suffering and a model of therapy that addresses that suffering. The model of suffering assumes that the experienced emotional pain is a response to an injury that prevents or violates the fulfilment of the basic human needs of being loved, safe, and acknowledged. This book focuses on a particular way of transforming emotional pain in psychotherapy through: helping the client to tolerate thTrade Review"With this book Ladislav Timulak shows his insightfulness into the therapeutic change process and has made an original contribution, demonstrating how people transform emotional pain." - Leslie S. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat can child and adolescent counsellors and therapists learn from research? What evidence is there for the effectiveness of different therapies and techniques? How can developmental or neuroscience research inform or inspire therapeutic work with young people? This book provides the answers to these questions, and more. Leading experts in the field take you through the latest research findings in child and adolescent therapy, discussing how each is relevant to the work of practitioners. Today, both therapists and trainees need to be aware of, and engage with, research findings. The book presents, accessibly, the current best knowledge and its implications for practice.Trade ReviewThis book is extremely well thought-out and is a must-have for those working with children and young people. -- Della AustinThis book is the ′go-to′ resource for all those involved in supporting young people. -- Andrew ReevesThis is a ground breaking book for counsellors and psychotherapists working with children and young people. The contributors acknowledge the scepticism of many practitioners in relation to adopting an "evidence based approach" and each chapter is likely to provoke debate and discussion. For me the power of this book lies in the way the authors employ their own self-reflexivity to model an approach to evidence-based practice, and suggest ways their readers might set about finding and examining evidence themselves. Through reading this work, each of us may, indeed, become "research-invigorated". -- Professor Miranda WolpertEssential Research Findings in Child and Adolescent Counselling and Psychotherapy makes an invaluable contribution to research-informed practice with younger clients. Written by some of the leading figures in the field, it provides practitioners with an authoritative and accessible overview of up-to-date scientific knowledge. -- John McLeodWith contributions from a range of experts, the text offers specific therapeutic guidance for working effectively with children and young people with mental health problems, drawing on the latest research evidence. -- Panos VostanisThere are two strongly held narratives around today about what makes for a good counsellor or psychotherapist: the narrative of ‘clinical experience’ verses the narrative of ‘research evidence’. This book skillfully brings these two narratives together into a coherent and complementary whole. It provides an engaging overview of research in the field of children and young peoples psychological therapies written by some of the world leaders in the field. It is not a book about research but more helpfully, it is a book about how to understand and use research evidence, to blend with clinical experience, to become a better therapist. It is one of the most accessible and comprehensive summaries of the research evidence that I have read - essential for all who are serious about their therapeutic practice. -- Duncan LawEssential Research Findings in Child and Adolescent Counselling and Psychotherapy is extremely important reading for child psychotherapists who are interested in the latest research, as well as for those who would like to be better informed but have tended to find the area of research daunting and arduous to digest. Rather than being purely about research, this book acts as a guide to understanding research evidence and how to use it to reflect on one′s own practice to become a better therapist. I would strongly recommend this reading to all Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists -- Rebecca WoodhamsThis is a practitioner-friendly text that arms counsellors with knowledge on how their ways of working are, or can be, underpinned by research findings. -- Dr Ann Dalzell * Clinical consultant, psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice *I really enjoyed this book. I think it’s well written, informative and interesting. It will appeal to students and experienced practitioners alike – we all need to participate in applying research findings to our practice and in becoming, as the editors suggest, ‘research inspired’. -- Caroline AnstissTable of ContentsIntroduction: What can child therapists learn from research? - Nick Midgley, Jacqueline Hayes and Mick Cooper Epidemiology: Are mental health problems in children and young people really a big issue? - Ann Hagell and Barbara Maughan Neurobiology, attachment and trauma: The development of mental health problems in children and young people - Graham Music Therapy outcomes: Is child therapy effective? - Terry Hanley and Julia Noble Therapy outcomes: What works for whom? - Peter Fonagy, Liz Allison and Alana Ryan What leads to change?
