Southern Illinois University Press Fortune and Faith in Old Chicago A Dual
Book SynopsisThis well-crafted and engaging biography of Augustus Garrett and his wife, Eliza Clark Garrett, tells two equally compelling stories: an ambitious man's struggle to succeed and the remarkable spiritual journey of a woman attempting to overcome tragedy.Trade ReviewIn telling the story of Augustus and Eliza Garrett, Charles H. Cosgrove has done an excellent job pulling together the slender threads of antebellum Chicago history. More than just a biography of an early mayor and businessman, this history illuminates the importance of evangelical religion in the social and cultural life of early Chicago." —Theodore J. Karamanski, author of Rally 'Round the Flag: Chicago and the Civil War"Cosgrove focuses on two individuals who shaped and reshaped the diverse worlds of nineteenth-century Chicago political, religious, business, and educational life. Readable, enlightening, engaging, and instructive, the dual biography invites the reader into the fabric and feel of early nineteenth-century urban life. [Many] will appreciate greatly the careful attention to Eliza Garrett’s role in the founding of the institution that bears her name and her struggles with controlling clergy." —Russell E. Richey, coauthor of The Methodist Experience in America: A Sourcebook"Grounded in the development of Protestantism in Chicago and especially in the crucial role that Eliza Garrett played in founding Methodist institutions, this thoughtful look at an early Chicago couple who found economic success in the city's rise reminds us of just how many stories of early Chicago are yet to be told." —Ann Durkin Keating, author of The World of Juliette Kinzie: Chicago before the Fire"Cosgrove captures the personal, economic, and religious struggles of a unique nineteenth-century American couple. Steeped in original research, Cosgrove’s book not only brings the sights and sounds of Old Chicago back to life but also allows us to see how the Garretts formed a unique partnership, leading one to a career in early Chicago politics and the other to become the first woman in the United States to found a theological seminary." —Christopher H. Taylor & Francis Ethnic Conflict In World Politics
Book SynopsisThis second edition of Ethnic Conflict in World Politics is an introduction to a new era in which civil society, states, and international actors attempt to channel ethnic challenges to world order and security into conventional politics. From Africa''s post-colonial rebellions in the 1960s and 1970s to anti-immigrant violence in the 1990s the authors survey the historical, geographic, and cultural diversity of ethnopolitical conflict. Using an analytical model to elucidate four well-chosen case studies?the Kurds, the Miskitos, the Chinese in Malaysia, and the Turks in Germany?the authors give students tools for analyzing emerging conflicts based on the demands of nationalists, indigenous peoples, and immigrant minorities throughout the world. The international community has begun to respond more quickly and constructively to these conflicts than it did to civil wars in divided Yugoslavia and genocide in Rwanda by using the emerging doctrines of proactive peacemaking and peace enforcem

Oneworld Publications The PalestineIsraeli Conflict
Book SynopsisAn updated edition of this bestselling introduction to the conflictThe essential guide that allows both sides to be heard Rabbi Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok presents the Israeli perspective, while Dr Dawoud El-Alami presents the Palestinian perspective Updated to cover the most recent events, including the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the May 2021 fighting in Gaza, this bestselling introduction explores the history, motivations and people behind the Palestine-Israel conflict - and assesses the prospects for peace after almost eighty years.Trade Review‘There are no dispassionate accounts of the conflict that racks the Holy Land, nor should there be. As this intelligent and important book makes clear, it is hard to be dispassionate when you believe that you are fighting for your life; and both the authors remind us that no less than this is what is felt to be at stake. But conflict is always intensified by ignorance. What this book does is to test how far we can go in mapping out a common history and exactly where and how this common history comes to be read differently. It offers no magical solution to this most persistent and harrowing conflict of our times, but it refuses to settle down with slogans, and models the possibility of a painful, honest – even angry – dialogue that does not simply freeze into mutual uncomprehending hatred.’ -- Dr Rowan Williams, Honorary Fellow and Honorary Professor of Contemporary Christian Thought, University of Cambridge‘Offers a rare insight into the Palestine–Israeli dilemma while outlining political, religious, historical and emotional issues in the struggle for peace.’ * Library Journal *'A must for anybody interested in understanding the conflict in the Middle East.' -- George Joffé, Research Fellow, Centre for International Studies, University of Cambridge

Taylor & Francis Inc Maneuver Warfare Handbook Westview Special
Book SynopsisManeuver warfare, often controversial and requiring operational and tactical innovation, poses perhaps the most important doctrinal questions currently facing the conventional military forces of the U.S. Its purpose is to defeat the enemy by disrupting the opponent''s ability to react, rather than by physical destruction of forces. This book develops and explains the theory of maneuver warfare and offers specific tactical, operational, and organizational recommendations for improving ground combat forces. The authors translate concepts?too often vaguely stated by manuever warfare advocates?into concrete doctrine. Although the book uses the Marine Corps as a model, the concepts, tactics, and doctrine discussed apply to any ground combat force.Table of ContentsWestview Special Studies -- Foreword -- Introduction -- The Theory of Maneuver Warfare -- Tactics and Operations -- Techniques and Organization -- Amphibious Operations -- Education and Training -- Conclusion -- Fundamentals of Tactics

Taylor & Francis The Latest Illustrated Book of Development
Book SynopsisIllustrated definitions are rarely found in zoning and development ordinances. Ordinances prefer the thousand words rather than the single picture. Illustrations greatly simplify how standards should be applied, particularly where the lot or parcel is irregularly shaped or where there are a number of variables present, each of which might have an impact on how the ordinance might apply in a specific situation. This best-selling resource has been the mainstay of the planner's bookshelf since its first publication and it differs from other books and publications containing development definitions in three major respects: It is illustrated; most of the definitions are designed to be used directly in ordinances with little or no change; and the more complex definitions are accompanied by commentaries and annotations that explain how the definition may be used in an ordinance, along with background information pertinent to the definition. This expanded edition standardizes in one handy reference all the key terms used in zoning, subdivision, site plan, and environmental ordinances. In all, it contains 1,957 definitions and 103 illustrations that can be incorporated in local ordinances with little or no change. Written and illustrated by two professional planners with nearly eighty years of combined experience in the practice of planning and zoning, this is a basic working tool and required reference for anyone involved in land development planning and regulation.

Cambridge University Press Can Blockchain Solve the Holdup Problem in
Book SynopsisA vexing problem in contract law is modification. Two parties sign a contract but before they fully perform, they modify the contract. Should courts enforce the modified agreement? A private remedy is for the parties to write a contract that is robust to hold-up or that makes the facts relevant to modification verifiable. Provisions accomplishing these ends are renegotiation-design and revelation mechanisms. But implementing them requires commitment power. Conventional contract technologies to ensure commitment liquidated damages are disfavored by courts and themselves subject to renegotiation. Smart contracts written on blockchain ledgers offer a solution. We explain the basic economics and legal relevance of these technologies, and we argue that they can implement liquidated damages without courts. We address the hurdles courts may impose to use of smart contracts on blockchain and show that sophisticated parties'' ex ante commitment to them may lead courts to allow their use as Table of Contents1. Cambridge University Press Global Corpse Politics
Book SynopsisWhat makes a photograph of a dead body obscene? Auchter offers a genealogy of obscenity that argues this process is highly political. She explores how and why some images are framed as ethically necessary to view, while others are displayed as spectacles, and others deemed too graphic for viewing.Trade Review'In this stunning, brilliantly written, empirically rich and courageously incisive book, Jessica Auchter examines how an 'obscenity taboo' inconsistently governs and disciplines how the dead in international politics are seen. Such inconsistency tells us something about various layers of political community in global politics. Yet this electrifying study tells us even more, about how, paradoxically, the dead re-humanize, de-humanize, and functionally shape global politics for the living.' Brent J. Steele, Professor and Francis D. Wormuth Presidential Chair of Political Science, The University of Utah'In this stunning book, Auchter undertakes a meticulous exploration of the politics of obscenity, particularly as obscenity relates to dead bodies. Global Corpse Politics brings troubling and challenging questions into discussions on visual politics and the politics of representation. Throughout the book, Auchter explains with astonishing clarity, audacity, humility, and often poignancy how decisions with regards to 'dead body images' are always political choices. These decisions partake of the global politics of the obscene, and they repeatedly reframe the relationship between death–and its visual rendition–and what it means to be human. Global Corpse Politics is a masterful work of critical scholarship that must be read by many, irrespective of their disciplinary backgrounds or intellectual interests.' François Debrix, Director of the ASPECT program and Professor of Political Science, Virginia Tech'What can the dead tell us about global politics? In this thoughtful and considerate book, Jessica Auchter refuses to see dead bodies as the grisly remnants of global politics. Instead, she explains how corpses work to constitute global politics, focusing particular attention on how dead bodies have been used to both re-humanise and de-humanise the people that populate international landscape. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in images of death that circulate in the media because it provides the theoretical tools we need to understand how death is seen, whose deaths are seen, and what these death reveal about the living world we inhabit.' Cambridge University Press The Scarce State
Book SynopsisThis book explores the politics of hinterlands in the developing world, showing that even in peripheral regions where the state appears weakest, it has significant power to transform society. The book challenges classic theories of state-building and provides lessons for policymakers promoting development in some of the world's poorest regions.Trade Review'Using the case of Ghana to study state-society relations in the hinterland, Prof. Noah Nathan's excellent new book forces his readers to rethink common claims about the state. In particular, Prof. Nathan provides a fresh and compelling theory of when, how and why even a 'weak' state can have everlasting effects on core development outcomes such as inequality, elite capture, electoral competition, clientelism and political violence. This book should be a must read for anyone interested in developing countries' political and economic trajectories.' Guy Grossman, University of Pennsylvania'In this theoretically original and empirically rich book, Noah Nathan reveals the outsized impact of rare state interventions on social, economic, and political relations in the hinterlands. Cambridge University Press Conquests and Rents
Book SynopsisWhy do many Muslim-majority societies exhibit dictatorship and violence? It is not due to Islam nor aspects of Muslim culture. Rather, this book argues the institutional legacy of the Muslim conquests and variation in nontax government revenues (rents) explain patterns of dictatorship and violence in many Muslim societies today.Trade Review'Why are Muslim-majority societies so often plagued by poverty, tyranny, and war? In this remarkable book, Faisal Ahmed offers a fresh answer to this age-old question. Synthesizing large and diverse bodies of scholarship and disparate data sources, he shows how historical legacies and natural endowments together determine the fate of nations. The result is one of the most important works on the political economy of the Muslim world to appear in many years.' Tarek Masoud, John F. Kennedy School of Government'Faisal Ahmed presents us with an excellent overview of how the early Muslim conquests wound up saddling territories with an institutional panoply that would produce long-term stagnation. Full of both theoretical and empirical insight, this is a book that will be of great interest to anyone keen to understand the historical trajectory of the Middle East.' David Stasavage, author of The Decline and Rise of Democracy'Conquests and Rents provides a fresh take on the question of why Muslim societies tend to be less democratic and more prone to violence. Rather than pinning the blame on Islam as a religion or a set of institutions, Ahmed highlights variation in historical development in Muslim-majority countries and the more temporally proximate effects of oil and foreign aid receipts. Based on rigorous analyses, the book makes an important intervention in ongoing debates about historical legacies and the 'resource curse.'' Cambridge University Press Mobilizing Teachers
Book SynopsisThe political participation of public school teachers in new democracies has generated heated debates. In some countries, teacher strikes shutter schools for months each year; in others, teachers'' unions have become powerful political machines and have even formed new political parties. To explain these contrasts, Mobilizing Teachers delves into changes in education politics and the labor movement. Christopher Chambers-Ju argues that union organizations fundamentally shape teacher mobilization, with far-reaching implications for politics and policy. With detailed case studies of Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, this book is the first comparative analysis of teacher politics in Latin America. Drawing on extensive field research and multiple sources of data, it enriches theoretical perspectives in political science and sociology on the interplay between protests, electoral mobilization, and party alliances. This title is part of the Flip it Open Programme and may also be available Open Access. Check our website Cambridge Core for details.

Cambridge University Press Balancing Pressures
Book SynopsisBalancing Pressures analyses how the economy, national politics, and supranational politics shape economic policymaking in the European Union. Economic theories alert policymakers of the problems associated with policy initiatives. Economic uncertainties shape political positioning during negotiations, while actual economic conditions affect both negotiations and implementation. National pressures to win office and pursue policies systematically influence negotiating positions, implementation patterns, and outcomes. Supranational pressures are associated with membership in the euro area, the expected and actual patterns of compliance, or the context of negotiations. Spanning the period of 1994 to 2019, this book analyses how these pressures shaped the definition of the policy problems, the controversies surrounding policy reforms, the outcome, timing, and direction of reforms, the negotiations over preventive surveillance, the compliance with recommendations, and the use and effectiveness of the procedure to correct excessive fiscal deficits. It concludes by assessing the effectiveness, fairness, and responsiveness of the policy.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Intersections of Tourism Migration and Exile
Book SynopsisThis book challenges the classic and often tacit compartmentalization of tourism, migration, and refugee studies by exploring the intersections of these forms of spatial mobility: each prompts distinctive images and moral reactions, yet they often intertwine, overlap, and influence one another.Tourism, migration, and exile evoke widely varying policies, diverse popular reactions, and contrasting imagery. What are the ramifications of these siloed conceptions for people on the move? To what extent do gender, class, ethnic, and racial global inequalities shape moral discourses surrounding people's movements? This book presents 12 predominantly ethnographic case studies from around the world, and a pandemic-focused conclusion, that address these issues. In recounting and juxtaposing stories of refugees' and migrants' returns, marriage migrants, voluntourists, migrant retirees, migrant tourism workers and entrepreneurs, mobile investors and professiTrade Review"At long last! We finally have a scholarly volume of work that critically and efficaciously examines the multiple crossovers between tourism, migration and exile. This remarkable collection of chapters provides an endless buffet of theoretically rich and empirically inspiring insights into diverse human mobilities and their implications for tourism. Crucial concepts, including migration, belonging, identity, existential fluidity, imaginaries, exclusion and inclusion, and many others, are skillfully interpreted through the lenses of mobilities, diasporas, migrations, refugees, and exiles. I congratulate Natalia Bloch and Kathleen Adams for putting together this consequential tome, which is global in its reach and appeal. This masterpiece belongs on the desk of every social scientist who has interests in tourism, migration, exile and all other manifestations of human mobility."Dallen J. Timothy, Professor and Senior Sustainability Scientist, Arizona State University"One of the most important developments in the study of mobilities over the last quarter century has been a growing willingness by scholars to consider the intersections between different forms of (im)mobility. Kathleen Adams and Natalia Bloch’s edited volume constitutes a major contribution to this effort. This diverse collection of ethnographic case studies demonstrates the dynamic productiveness of addressing the overlaps and interplays between tourism, migration, and exile rather than treating these mobilities as investigative siloes. It will be a significant resource in both research and teaching."Vered Amit, Professor Emerita of Anthropology, Concordia University Montreal, Canada"This collection constitutes an important step towards the integration of the study of mobilities. In a series of ethnographic case studies of tourists, migrants, exiles, refugees, returnees and volunteers, the volume provides a framework for the systematic study of the great variety of personal mobility phenomena in different parts of the contemporary world. The insights of the authors and editors constitute a step forward towards the formulation of a systematic comparative approach to mobilities."Erik Cohen, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem"Tourist, migrant, traveler, refugee: too often we take for granted what these terms mean and to whom they should be applied. This collection’s lucid, thought-provoking chapters trenchantly challenge such simplistic categorizations, using the fine-grained lens of ethnography to reveal how mobilities overlap, intersect, and blur in lived experience—despite deep-rooted systems of governance, finance, representation, and scholarship that keep them conceptually distinct. Addressing a dazzling range of geographical settings, populations, motivations, and outcomes, this wonderfully coherent yet notably interdisciplinary volume will be a landmark work, prompting serious reflection and debate."Dr Naomi Leite, Reader in Anthropology, SOAS, University of LondonTable of ContentsForeword- Mimi ShellerIntroduction: Problematizing Siloed Mobilities: Tourism, Migration, Exile.Kathleen M. Taylor & Francis Ltd Development with Dignity
Book SynopsisAt a time when the global development industry is under more pressure than ever before, this book argues that an end to poverty can only be achieved by prioritizing human dignity.Unable to adequately account for the roles of culture, context, and local institutions, today's outsider-led development interventions continue to leave a trail of unintended consequences, ranging from wasteful to even harmful. This book shows that increased prosperity can only be achieved when people are valued as self-governing agents. Social orders that recognize autonomy and human dignity unleash enormous productive energy. This in turn leads to the mobilization of knowledge-sharing that is critical to innovation and localized problem-solving. Offering a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives and specific examples from the field showing these ideas in action, this book provides NGOs, multilateral institutions, and donor countries with practical guidelines for implementing dignity-first deveTrade Review"The liberalism of Warner and Palmer could be called ‘adultism.’ The other policies—of a statist right or a statist left or for that matter a statist middle—all treat adults as bad children or sad children. Poor things, poor things, they’re waiting to be fed. On the contrary, adults are to be accorded the dignity of ‘the equal presumption of liberty and citizen-based democratic political principles’ . . . You need this lucid and eloquent book. Read it, right away. No time to waste . . . ."Deirdre N. McCloskey, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Economics and of History, and Professor Emerita of English and of Communication, adjunct in classics and philosophy, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA"Read this book and you will be introduced to new perspectives on the power of local knowledge – rooted in human experience – to fuel sustainable development and to generate the socio-economic wealth of nations."Vernon L. Smith, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences"Development with Dignity is an outstanding contribution to the public discourse addressing the intimate relationships between universal rights, human dignity, and economic prosperity. Taylor & Francis The Routledge Handbook of French Politics and
Book SynopsisThe Routledge Handbook of French Politics and Culture provides a detailed survey of the highly differentiated field of research on French politics, society and culture across the social sciences and humanities. The handbook includes contributions from the most eminent authors in their respective fields who bring their authority to bear on the task of outlining the current state-of-the art research in French Studies across disciplinary boundaries. As such, it represents an innovative as well as an authoritative survey of the field, representing an opportunity for a critical examination of the contrasts and the continuities in methodological and disciplinary orientations in a single volume. The Routledge Handbook of French Politics and Culture will be essential reading and an authoritative reference for scholars, students, researchers and practitioners involved in, and actively concerned about, research on French politics, society and cultuTrade Review"This book is a very useful contribution to the study of French politics and culture today. It is a collective endeavour which highlights recurring aspects of French ‘exceptionalism’ as well as other trends in line with other European countries. This edited volume offers a timely assessment of France under the Macron presidency and stays abreast of the more recent and dramatic transformations of the political system, but also of major societal and cultural changes. The study is a snapshot into France in 2019, and is divided into sections, each of them deals with a particular aspect of contemporary France: the institutional system and recent political realignments, what it is to be French, spaces of political and cultural contestation, and issues mediating memories and culture. The authors draw on a variety of academic disciplines. This state-of-the-art volume fills a gap in the existing literature on French society as a whole."Philippe Marlière, University College London, UK."An engaged, and engaging, journey through the political, social and cultural landscape of contemporary France. With an approach well-grounded in the history of modern France, this collective volume tackles many different forms of contemporary political and cultural contestation. On the way, the reader travels through physical spaces from the streets of Paris and the banlieue to the French countryside of the twenty-first century, meeting far more complex French identities and experiences than traditional Republican discourse would suggest. Less tangible spaces are also explored, those of traditional and new media and their effects, of voting patterns and the French political system, of gender, of migration and of the memories of the conduct and experiences of war and colonisation and their presence in the immediate every day. Successive chapters bring together aspects of Macron’s France as diverse as the evolving place of popular culture to changes affecting the political sphere, all asking fundamental questions about continuity and change in French politics and culture in the wider context of recent global shifts."Debra Kelly, University of Westminster, UK."Any scholar of modern and contemporary France must confront the question of whether the country is, or has ever been, exceptional in relation to the rest of the global North. This rich and diverse collection of essays on French politics and culture is a very welcome and timely update on that perennial question. It provides illuminating overviews and detailed case studies on themes such as the 2017 elections, official and counter-narratives of the banlieue and Jewish culture and popular music, written by many of the leading experts in French studies. It is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand French society today."Jan Windebank, University of Sheffield, UK.Table of ContentsIntroduction: French Politics and Culture in the Macron Era Part I: Politics in Modern and Contemporary France 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Globalizing China Social and Governance Reforms
Book SynopsisUnlike most books which consider China's transformation and globalization over the last four decades by focusing on China's economic growth, this book examines how the Chinese regime has handled the increasingly complex sociopolitical and socio-economic challenges generated as a result of the country's economic growth and transformation, challenges arising both from within the country and also from the external political environment. Based on extensive original research, the book outlines how China's economic development has generated social and governance pressures, discusses the government's social, educational, and governance reforms, and highlights how China's development experiences, which differ from the Western economies with democratic political regimes, have drawn increasing attention from other countries in the developing world as an example to follow.Trade Review'What a crucial book this is! Ka Ho Mok has brought China’s social policy, higher education and global strategy to the world. China’s governance, society and economy, which are immensely complex, will be seminal to the human future, as significant as the Euro-American countries and also different in important ways. Understanding the dynamism of China’s achievements, which began in massive poverty and continue to be subject to geopolitical containment, taking in both the general lessons and the specifically Chinese characteristics, is crucial to all of us. Professor Mok’s clear thinking and wide vision is in the tradition of the best scholarly-practical work.'Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education, University of Oxford and Director of the ESRC/RE Centre for Global Higher Education, UK'We need to understand Global China’s many forms. This important and timely book does much of that work for us.'Anthony Welch, Professor of Education, University of Sydney, Australia'This is by far the most important book that has been written on the social policy and governance responses to globalization in China. Taylor & Francis Legal Geographies of Water
Book SynopsisThis book deepens our understanding of humanityâs diverse relationships with water and the law, providing a critical assessment of this relationship, as well as charting the course towards a more sustainable and just water future.By using legal geography, the book pays particular attention to the place-based inter-relationships between water, people, and law, both formal and informal, and to the ways that law both creates and is created by the relationship between people and place. Starting in the 1980s, Chapters 2 and 3 investigate the early commodification of water through the liberalisation of rural water markets in Chile and the urban water and sanitation systems of England and Wales, before examining its global expansion in the 1990s, starting with donor driven water governance reforms in the global south. Chapters 4 and 5 document both the grassroots response to these neoliberal water reforms and the inherent tensions in attempts during the early 2000s to reconcile the recognition of a human right to water with the ongoing roll out of market mechanisms, both in the domestic context of South Africa and within the United Nations human rights system. Moving forward again, Chapter 6 examines the recent intensification of neoliberal water governance through financialisation, and considers its specific impacts in Detroit and Flint, Michigan. Chapter 7 then considers the renewed global emphasis on living waters and Indigenous ontologies of water by examining the new legislative arrangements for the Whanganui River in Aotearoa/New Zealand. In the face of a growing global water crisis, which is being exacerbated by climate change, humanity must confront the fundamental nature of our relationship with living water and the immerse damage that has been wrought through extractivist approaches. The book concludes in Chapter 8 by highlighting the stories of hope that can be found in many of the case studies explored in the book and in emerging examples from around the world. This book is essential reading for students and scholars interested in water law, security, and justice from across a wide range of disciplines, including environmental studies, law, geography, human rights, and political ecology.

Taylor & Francis Jihadism in the RussianSpeaking World
Book SynopsisThis book contends that the discourses of jihadism in Russia's North Caucasus, and their offshoots in other parts of the Russian Federation, are not just reflections of jihadi ideologies that came from abroad, rather that post-Soviet jihadism is a phenomenon best understood when placed in the broader cultural environment in which it emerged, an environment which comprises the North Caucasus, the whole of Russia, and beyond. It examines how post-Soviet jihadism is also part of global processes, in this case, global jihadism, explores how post-Soviet jihadism bears the imprint of the preceding Soviet context especially in terms of symbols, discursive tools, interpretational frameworks, and dissemination strategies, and discusses how, ironically, Russian-speaking jihadism is an expansionist idea for uniting all Russian regions on a supra-ethnic principle, but an idea that was not born in Moscow or St. Petersburg. Taylor & Francis Ltd Policy Strategy and Innovation Primer
Book SynopsisPhua focuses on applying the best of corporate strategy and innovation tools and praxis into the policy process with the aim of devising a coherent policy strategyinnovation framework and process.Government and business strategies differ in their operating assumptions and variables, but the strategy process is more similar than is often perceived. Phua debunks the government versus business dichotomy and demonstrates the potential for cross-learning between both domains. Readers will benefit the most by reading this book in tandem with Phua's other works on strategy also featured in this series. This book is an essential primer for academics, practitioners and learners of public policy, strategy, innovation and applied problem-solving.Trade Review"Policy problems are inherently complex and hence difficult to solve. Charles Phua's book is well embedded in complexity thinking assumptions and ventures to cross fertilise the best of corporate strategy into policy strategy. This interdisciplinary entrepreneurial book is essentially about practical problem-solving methodology and has immense potential for problem solving in other disciplines."Professor Carmine Bianchi, Professor of Business and Public Management, University of Palermo, Italy, and Scientific Coordinator for CED4 Systems Dynamics Group"To make public policy and business strategy work together for the greater good requires more than just rhetoric. It requires tools. This is precisely the focus of The Policy-Strategy Innovation Primer and practitioners will benefit."Professor Craig Calhoun, University Professor of Social Sciences, Arizona State University, former president of London of School of Economics and Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC)"When in need of a tool, a toolbox is extremely useful, if its contents are well organized and cover many contingencies. Charles Chao Rong Phua has assembled a conceptual toolbox composed of elements of strategic pragmatism for policy strategy-innovation that draws selectively on complexity, policy and strategy literatures to create an effective repository of conceptual devices to aid practitioners’ practical wisdom."Professor Stewart Clegg, D.Phil, D.Litt, Ph.D, John Grill Institute for Project Leadership, School of Project Management and Faculty of Engineering, The University of Sydney"In an era when governments the world over face seemingly insurmountable challenges, public administrators need more of the kind of "strategic pragmatism" that Charles Chao Long Phua advocates in this book. Readers will find Policy Strategy and Innovation Primer brimming with optimism that governmental organizations can adapt and innovate to meet the many demands of our time."Prof Cary Coglianese, Edward B Shils Professor of Law and Professor of Political Science; Director, Penn Program on Regulation, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School."A sweeping and intellectually challenging analysis of policy- strategy innovation, especially its complex inter-disciplinary nature and written with an eye for politicians and civil servants. A text for the times."Professor Christopher Coker, Director, LSE IDEAS"I think the future of interesting research and writing sits as the intersection of arenas and disciplines rather than within any particular one. This is what Certified Management Consultant Charles Phua has accomplished in his latest book. Here, in (Charles, put the title in the form you'd like it), the worlds of public policy and business strategy are inter-twined to produce a practically oriented text designed to appeal to the research community and practitioners alike. As chair of the Academic Fellows with the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes and a fellow Certified Management Consultant, I fully endorse the bridge building between the leading edge of practice and communicable insight that Charles has achieved."Prof Simon Haslam, CMC, Visiting Professor, University of Durham Business School and Chair, International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI) Academic Fellows"In this lively new book, the author lays out an approach to public policy that escapes the usual US and Westminster boundaries to the broader fabric of public policy puzzles throughout the world. He lays out strategies for innovation that are rooted in the emerging new reality of policy complexity. That creates a rich new lens through which to view the big issues facing governments around the world."Professor Donald F. Kettl, Professor Emeritus and Former Dean, University of Maryland School of Public Policy "Business and policy scholarly disciplines have professionalised through the decades. But the increasingly complex topics as technology and sustainability are necessitating cross-fertilisation and cross-learning across disciplines. Having done doctoral training in public policy and business strategy, Charles Phua's cross-fertilisation of business strategy tools into the policy process will advance the complexity discourse in public policy. A novel and commendable feat!"Professor Sarah Kreps, John L. Wetherill Professor in the Department of Government, Director, Cornell Tech Policy Lab, Cornell University, and non-resident senior fellow, Brookings Institution"Policy Strategy and Innovation Primer: Process, Praxis, Tools is very relevant to policy scholars and practitioners because innovative policies are needed to solve complex problems of today. Under this context, professor Phua clearly articulated and elucidated the strategies in innovation for the policy domain. I am confident that this book on policy strategy and innovation will greatly impact the building of theory and practical know-how in the field of public policy."Professor Hae Young Lee, Professor of Public Administration at Yeungnam University, S. Korea, former President of Korean Association of Public Administration (2014) and former Chairman of Korean Government Evaluation Commission (2014-2018)"In the fast-changing world that we live in today, where innovation outstrips policy formulation and regulation, and where the longevity of a political party, let alone a politician, is increasingly elusive, the public-private debate takes on heightened emphasis. Charles does an excellent job of addressing this head-on, questioning if a dichotomy truly exists or should be allowed to prevail."Lim Hwee Hua, Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore, Rector, Tembusu College, National University of Singapore, and author of Government in Business - Friend or Foe? (2014) and Government in Business - Leading or Lagging? (2021)"Good policy strategy requires a sound outstanding of context and strategic levers. Good policy innovation requires focus on objective and agility in design and implementation. Charles Phua’s book offers a unique blend of how corporate strategy and innovation tools could support better strategies and innovation in public policy. Both government and business worlds should operate with the citizen-user in mind."Professor Lim Siong Guan, Professor in Practice, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, former Head of Singapore Civil Service, former Chairman of Economic Development Board and former Group President of GIC "As the world advances towards a post-pandemic future amidst intensifying technologization and geopolitical upheaval, greater clarity than ever is needed for sound policy making. This book provides a strategic and practicable framework to answer those imperatives"Professor Lim Sun Sun, Professor and Head of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Singapore University of Technology and Design, former Nominated Member of Parliament, Singapore"This book is based on the author’s belief that corporate strategy and innovation tools and practices have much to offer in the practice of public policy – a conviction formed through Charles Phua’s two-decade experience as a bureaucrat-nonprofit entrepreneur, researcher, and adjunct faculty at various universities. By breaking down the public policy process into steps, and through the use of diverse examples, Charles illustrates the potential application of corporate strategies, in a manner that permits it to be transferable across political systems. Those interested in public policy are likely to find much food for thought offered in this book."Professor Ling San, Deputy President and Provost, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore"Classical military strategists such as Sun Tzu have inspired corporate strategists. Public policy strategy as a growing field could benefit from learning from corporate strategy. This nexus is well articulated in Charles Phua's book which strings relevant corporate strategy frameworks to their matching policy strategy process. A highly commendable interdisciplinary effort, useful to practitioners, academics, students and public-conscious citizens."Professor Hwy-Chang Moon, Professor Emeritus, Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University, and author of The Art of Strategy: Sun Tzu, Michael Porter and Beyond "In the early years of its independence, Singapore attempted any method, regardless of orthodoxy or elegance, that delivered favourable outcomes to it citizens. Several public- sector leaders also led government-linked companies, thereby gaining valuable cross- sector experiences. Charles Phua's book is a timely reminder that despite professionalisation of disciplines, corporate strategy may have something useful to offer the public sector in pursuing solutions to time-honoured problems."Joseph Y Pillay, Rector, College of Alice and Peter Tan, National University of Singapore, former Chairman (2005-2019), Council of Presidential Advisors (Singapore) and, former Chairman, Singapore International Airlines (1972-1996)"What makes certain decisions effective and outcomes successful will very much depend on having an in-depth policy strategy and innovation. What are the necessary inputs for formulating good policies and why some worked and some do not, are highlighted, and explained carefully in this book. This book shows that much of that often requires in turn, a good knowledge and use of business strategies as well. The author comes from an interesting mix of background experiences from utilising a variety of tools and applied techniques to bear on a number of real-life scenarios. This book is strongly recommended to readers who have keen interest in how real problems may be solved. "Professor Euston Quah, Albert Winsemius Chair Professor of Economics, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; President, Economic Society of Singapore "As a practicing city designer, where we think everything is political and everything is inter-disciplinary, it is a refreshing way of analysing and dissecting policy strategy innovation. It is a must read for policy makers as well as city practitioners such as us where we need consensus to design and plan future cities and future of our current cities."Chintan Raveshia, Cities Business Leader, Southeast Asia, Arup"Charles has laid out a comprehensive array of toolkits from the private sector that can be invaluable for public policy-making. These business practices may just be able to help develop solutions for addressing some of our most wicked problems in society today."Seah Chin Siong, President, Singapore Institute of Management, and Chairman, National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre"Policy strategy and innovation is growing field and often seen as a central force for increasing economic prosperity and improving economic inequality. The writer incorporate the business strategy framework into public policy process for formulation innovative public policy. The book is recommended for the policy practitioners and scholars even for the MBA students. It offers different views how to formulate innovative policy."Professor Agus Soehadi, Vice Rector, and former Dean of Business and Economics School, Presetiya Mulya University (Indonesia)"Industry 4.0 and the many disruptions the world is facing, even before the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war, has accelerated the rate of change to a level where business models, policies and skills are becoming obsolete at such a rapid pace that society as a whole struggles to keep and catch up. Policy makers cannot rely on past models because what worked in the past will also quickly become outdated. In business, cross-disciplinary knowledge has shown to yield superior results. In the book, Charles has cleverly suggested that policy making needs to also take an inter-disciplinary approach of adopting innovation and business concepts, tools, and strategies from business disciplines to yield robust policies that the world badly needs to keep the peace and prosperity of the world. Current and future policy makers should use this as a reference and guide as they take over helms of politics and policy making. "Professor Inderjit Singh Dhaliwal, Former Member of Parliament, Singapore, Entrepreneur and Adjunct Professor, College of Engineering, Nanyang Technological University and President, Global Start-up Committee, WBAF (World Business Angel Investment Forum) "Public policy impacts everyone’s life, it does not take place in a void and not just for policy practitioners or scholars. As the nation’s challenges get more complex and the people more educated, it needs to open itself to more public participation in policy making. It is equally important that active citizens are able to understand and participate more meaningfully in discourses on public policy. Charles Phua’s new book fills an important gap to facilitate this by providing a primer and applied guide on strategy-innovation in public sector. You can sense Charles’s enthusiasm to share his deep knowledge as he has always been keen to drive more active citizenry in policymaking. Given his role as a trainer and management consultant, this book is both useful and practical. "Professor Tan Thiam Soon, Institute Professor and former President, Singapore Institute of Technology"It is a great project, very valuable for both academics and practitioners, especially those who want to learn and integrate latest business practices in strategic management into the governance and decision making in the public sector."Professor Wang Xiaohu, Professor and PhD programme coordinator, Department of Public Policy, City University of Hong Kong"This book on Policy Strategy and Innovation by Charles Phua provides many interesting perspectives on the subject. In doing so, he enables readers to have a broader yet insightful understanding of what policy strategy is all about. It is also a well-researched piece of work. "Professor Wee Chow Hou, PhD, BBM(L), PPA, FMIS(Hon), Adjunct Professor for Strategy and Marketing, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore University of Social Sciences, author of 5 books on Sun Zi Bingfa"In this volume, Charles Chao Rong Phua continued his strategic pragmatism thesis and embedded it in the policy strategy process. His infusion of corporate strategy tools into the right policy process sequence is novel and requires a deep understanding of both public policy and business management disciplines to do so. This book opens the door for greater cross-fertilisation of knowledge between policy and business disciplines through policy strategy and innovation cases. Drawing on over ten years of ethnographic fieldwork and interview data with a wide variety of INGOs, Tesseur offers unique insights into if and how INGOs plan for translation and interpreting needs while also critically reflecting on her own experience and the ways in which activist researchers like her can ensure social justice efforts are fully reflTable of ContentsTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Introduction INGOs, language, and T&I Conceptual framework Engaged research and critical reflexivity A note on international development terminology Underpinning research Structure of the book References Chapter 2: Translation management in INGOs throughout history Introduction Save the Children UK: a history of language silence? Taylor & Francis Ltd Mapping the New Left Antisemitism
Book SynopsisMapping the New Left Antisemitism: The Fathom Essays provides a comprehensive guide to contemporary Left antisemitism. The rise of a new and largely left-wing form of antisemitism in the era of the Jewish state and the distinction between it and legitimate criticism of Israel are now roiling progressive politics in the West and causing alarming spikes in antisemitic incitement and incidents. Fathom journal has examined these questions relentlessly in the first decade of its existence, earning a reputation for careful textual analysis and cogent advocacy. In this book, the Fathom essays are contextualised by three new contributions: Lesley Klaff provides a map of contemporary antisemitic forms of antizionism, Dave Rich writes on the oft-neglected lived experience of the Jewish victims of contemporary antisemitism and David Hirsh assesses the intellectual history of the left from which both Fathom and his own London Centre for the Study of ContemporarTrade Review‘Antisemitism has often presented itself as a satisfactory explanation for what is wrong with the world, and repeatedly offered tragic recipes for how to improve that world. Do our moral and political ideals today reproduce past prejudice and projection? We cannot know without reflection, and it is difficult to imagine a better stimulus to reflection than the essays gathered in this informative, wide-ranging, and important volume’.David Nirenberg, author of Anti-Judaism: The Western Tradition‘This is an indispensable volume on an unignorable subject’.Anthony Julius, author of Trials of the Diaspora: The History of Anti-Semitism in England‘Written by many of this generation’s leading scholars, Mapping the New Left Antisemitism: The Fathom Essays is a valuable compilation of learned, deeply insightful analyses of contemporary anti-Jewish hostility prevalent in significant strains of western political thought. An eye-opening, much-needed collection, it offers critically important reflections on a phenomenon too often overlooked or denied: the pernicious links between “anti-Zionism” and antisemitism within the political left’.Alvin Rosenfeld, Professor of English and Jewish Studies and Irving M. Glazer Chair, Jewish Studies Director, Center for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, Indiana University at Bloomington, USA ‘Fathom has played an invaluable role challenging some dangerous myths concerning Jews and Zionism that have corrupted parts of the left. This wide-ranging collection will compel anyone concerned with a future left to worry about intellectually and historically simplistic formulas’.Mitchell Cohen, Professor of Political Science at Baruch College of the City University of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center. 1991-2009 co-editor of Dissent, one of the United States' leading intellectual quarterlies, now an Editor Emeritus‘Mapping the New Left Antisemitism is essential reading for anyone interested in one of the most destructive ideologies of the 21st century. It includes essays by some of the most pertinent scholars on antisemitism from the political left and makes the case for the urgency of combating antisemitism in its most modern forms’.Gunther Jikeli, Erna B. Rosenfeld Professor in Jewish Studies and Associate Director at the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, Indiana University Bloomington, USA‘This collection of essays on contemporary left antisemitism showcases the best qualities of Alan Johnson’s Fathom, which focuses relentlessly on the heart of the problem of how people relate to Israel. People who consider themselves to be well-informed and anti-racist are too often confused about the facts and prone to stumbling into antisemitic ways of thinking. Johnson is attentive to the temptation to use an invented notion of Jews or Zionism to make sense of a frightening world. He educates about the situation and provides a platform (through Fathom) for smart people writing from diverse viewpoints’.Rosa Freedman, inaugural Professor of Law, Conflict and Global Development at the University of Reading, and a Research Fellow at The London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, UK‘In 10 years Fathom has already published half a century's worth of critically important essays and reviews’.Michael Walzer, Professor (Emeritus) of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ; author of Just and Unjust Wars (1977), among other books; former co-editor of Dissent magazine for twenty yearsTable of ContentsPart 1: Introduction and Contexts 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd European Banking Nationalism
Book SynopsisThis book compares the different expressions of, and outcomes from, banking nationalism in two European countries to draw wider conclusions about the consequences for Banking Union in Europe and to show how national governments deal (or fail to deal) with international commitments. It reveals how and why one case Spain managed to tackle failing banks within EU Banking Union regulations even before they became written in EU law, while the other Italy had more persistent problems. The book argues that Spain demonstrates a successful case of liberal economic nationalism, typified by aggressive, early state intervention to restructure Spanish banks, and help from the European Stability Mechanism even in the face of local political opposition. Italy, meanwhile, suffered from the weaker, delayed intervention which forced it to confront European institutions with demands for special treatment as a means of externalizing its own internal weakness. It allows not only to apply the key methodological and epistemological tenets of PEMC but also to counter its all too often misrepresentation by guardians of corporate power.” - Ana I. Segovia Alonso, Associate Professor, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain“For anyone seeking a deeper understanding of PEC and its methodologies, this book is an indispensable companion. It delves into the types of sources PEC scholars rely on, the methodologies they employ for data collection, and how they skilfully employ history and theory to make sense of their findings.
