He not only presents the facts in a comprehensive and engaging fashion but embeds these in lucidly elaborated theory that enables us to make sense of what he is explaining. This fifth edition is a welcome update of what has become the standard textbook on contemporary Russian politics."Graeme Gill, University of Sydney, Australia."In this new edition of his classic study, Professor Sakwa has once again provided us with the definitive textbook on Russian Politics. This impressive text which covers all the key areas of Russian domestic and foreign policy, has been thoroughly revised and updated, and it now has a stronger focus on the Putin era. Taylor & Francis Critical Environmental Politics
Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to review central concepts in the study of environmental politics and to open up new questions, problems, and research agendas in the field. The volume does so by drawing on a wide range of approaches from critical theory to poststructuralism, and spanning disciplines including international relations, geography, sociology, history, philosophy, anthropology, and political science. The 28 chapters cover a range of global and local studies, illustrations and cases. These range from the Cochabamba conference in Bolivia to climate camps in the UK; UN summits in Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg to climate migrants from Pacific islands; forests in Indonesia to Dutch energy governance reform; indigenous communities in Namibia to oil extraction in the Niger Delta; survivalist militias in the USA to Maasai tribesmen in Kenya. Rather than following a regional or issue-based (e.g. water, forests, pollution, etc) structure, the volume is organised in terms oTrade Review'Critical Environmental Politics asks the deeply disturbing questions and heads directly into the difficult possible answers. None of its contributors argue that a little more fine-tuning will avert socio-ecological catastrophe. Both new and established critical theorists join forces in a truly necessary "wake up" call. Read it.' Richard B. Norgaard, University of California, Berkeley, USA."All eras are defined by keywords that both reflect dominant norms and serve to reproduce them. Yet these keywords are polysemic and have the potential to be redefined, so altering habits of thought and action in the world at large. This excellent book offers a rich set of genealogies of those concepts that have come to describe human-environment relationships in the early 21st century. It’s an essential guide for anyone trying to make sense of those relationships and how they might be made less destructive for people and non-humans. Read it to find out whose tactics and strategies have succeeded since the first Earth Day, and what potential for insurgency currently exists." Professor Noel Castree, University of Manchester, UK."Who should read this book? Anybody who is increasingly growing weary of the hype that surrounds sustainability and the green economy. How refreshing the essays in the book are! What a penetrating analysis of the key-concepts of the environmental politics! The critical school of social thought at its best, debunking but constructive, and full of imagination. Last not least, the book is well-written and neatly structured, a superb primer of environmental citizenship." Professor Wolfgang Sachs, editor of The Development Dictionary, Wuppertal Institut, Germany."An impressive set of contributors take us on a critical tour through the vast territory of environmental politics. Visiting along the way numerous essential ideas, thinkers, issues, and cases, this collection firmly and thoroughly establishes the proper place of critique in all its varieties at the heart of environmental affairs." Taylor & Francis Superdiversity
Book SynopsisSuperdiversity explores processes of diversification and the complex, emergent social configurations that now supersede prior forms of diversity in societies around the world. Migration plays a key role in these processes, bringing changes not just in social, cultural, religious, and linguistic phenomena, but also in the ways that these phenomena combine with others like gender, age, and legal status. The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes, and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social âœdifferenceâ have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed, and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations, and inequalities. Superdiversity presents a convincing case for recognizing new social formations created by changing migration patterns and calls for a re-thinking of public policy and social scientific approaches to social difference. This introduction to the multidisciplinary concept of superdiversity will be of considerable interest to students and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.Trade Review‘In Superdiversity, Steven Vertovec provides a tour de force elucidation of the concept he introduced in 2007, explaining that superdiversity entails much more than rising ethnic heterogeneity tied to immigration, but is instead rooted in a deeper complexification of human society wherein social categories are reconfigured to be multiple, flexible, and porous rather than static and fixed, yielding increasingly complex identities that social scientists and policy makers must recognize and accept.’ Douglas S. Massey, Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs, Princeton University, USA‘Steven Vertovec’s concept of "superdiversity" is widely used across the social sciences for understanding social change. In this ambitious and most informative new book, the author specifies and updates his theory; responds to his critics; creates bridges with the interdisciplinary literatures on categorization, identity, and boundaries; and analyzes all we know about the responses and backlash to diversification. For all these reasons, this book is sure to be a "must read" for anyone interested in immigration, diversity, cosmopolitanism, racism, inequality, and related topics. I recommend it with much enthusiasm.’Michèle Lamont, Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies and Professor of Sociology and African American Studies, Harvard University, USA ‘A masterly account that takes us from the development of the superdiversity concept and its use in the social sciences to public responses to diversification. Vertovec’s well-written and insightful book is a must read for students and scholars who hope to understand changes in the nature of diversity in today’s world.’ Nancy Foner, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Hunter College and Graduate Center, City University of New York, USA‘Superdiversity is now a key concept in research on cultural complexity. In this excellent, eagerly anticipated book, its originator explains and explores the implications of the current ‘diversification of diversity’, showing why diversity cannot be reduced to simple categories. It deserves to be read by everyone trying to make sense of the complex social realities of the contemporary world.’Thomas Hylland Eriksen, Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo, NorwayTable of Contents1 Introduction 2 Super-Diversity and its Implications (2007) 3 The Many Meanings of Superdiversity 4 Diversifications 5 Responses to Diversification 6 Social Complexity 7 Conclusion

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Modern African American Political Thought
Book SynopsisThe Modern African American Political Thought Reader compiles the work of great African American political thinkers throughout the twentieth century and up through today to show the development of black political thought and trace the interconnectedness of each person''s ideas through their own words. From abolition, through civil rights, Black nationalism, radical feminism, neo-conservativism, and the new Black Moderate, Angela Jones has collected the key readings of the most important figures in black political history. Each chapter includes an introduction to the themes of the chapter, a biographical sketch of the person profiled, and some of their greatest works, chosen to show the range of political subjects of interest to African Americans. From Radicals like Angela Y. Davis to Conservatives such as Michael Steele, this anthology showcases the diversity of political thought within the African American community. It is a must for anyone intereTrade ReviewThe Modern African American Political Thought Reader is an important and timely resource for the study of African American History and Culture.Peniel E. Joseph, author of Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack ObamaCutting through the 'noise' of a new class of mainstream media pundits, The Modern African American Political Thought Reader provides a great social and intellectual service by connecting an illustrious past and present of African American thought production. The discourse, and the actions this discourse inspires, is an invaluable contribution to a much-needed delineation of the nuances within black historical and contemporary political thought. Most importantly, The Modern African American Political Thought Reader necessarily troubles our conception of "the" black community as a singular, unified entity. Instead, Jones' volume reveals the plurality and collisions of intellectual debate that are crucial to shaping a vital vision of African Americans with a linked destiny, but disparate strategies for achieving social justice.Kimberly Springer, author of Living for the Revolution: Black Feminist Organizations, 1968–1980Table of ContentsIntroductionPart I: The Antebellum Era: the Rise of Abolitionism Chapter 1: David WalkerChapter 2: Maria StewartChapter 3: Frederick DouglassChapter 4: Anna Julia CooperPart II: Reconstruction and Beyond: Debates over the Negro Problem and the Creation of Civil Rights DiscourseChapter 5: Alexander CrummellChapter 6: Booker T. Taylor & Francis The Sayyid Qutb Reader Selected Writings on
Book SynopsisAnyone who wants to understand what militant Muslims think has to understand what they readâand they read Sayyid Qutb, the intellectual father of Islamic fundamentalism. Qutb, an Egyptian literary critic and philosopher who was appalled by American decadence, gained prominence in the Muslim Brotherhood, was imprisoned by Nasser, and hanged in 1966. Through his death and prolific writings he became a martyr for the cause of political Islam. His work is virtually unknown outside the Muslim world, but Qutb is at the heart of the intellectual rationale for jihad and violence in the name of Islam. The Sayyid Qutb Reader is the first collection of his selected works available to the general public. As such, this valuable introduction to Qutbâs core intellectual ideas should be read by anyone who wants to understand one of the most important conflicts of our age. Trade Review"The influence of Sayyid Qutb on contemporary Islamic radicalism has been far-reaching. This timely reader makes the main currents of Qutb's thought available in one volume to the English-speaking reader, a service that should facilitate the study of a figure who, in the West, has been more widely cited than read."--Noah Feldman, Harvard Law School"There has been need for a summary volume of Sayyid Qutb's basic writings for some time because of his foundational position within Muslim radicalism. Although many of Qutb's writings have been translated into English, the translations have often been problematic or in substandard English. Bergesen brings together the essential Qutb for the interested reader, and most especially classroom use, and presents it in a coherent and thematic manner. Because Qutb's writings are so voluminous and for the most part repetitive, Bergesen has done a much-needed selection that can give outsiders a sense of the importance and influence of Qutb's thinking without having to read them all. The Sayyid Qutb Reader is a very nicely achieved balance between a summary of Qutb's thought (from a scholarly viewpoint) and the words of the author himself, finally in readable English."--David Cook, Rice University, HoustonTable of ContentsPart 1: Life, Context, and Core Ideas 1. The University of Michigan Press The Repoliticization of the Welfare State
Book SynopsisCompares welfare state politics before and after the Great Recession arguing that a new and lasting post-crisis dynamic has emerged where political parties once again matter for social spending. At the heart of this repoliticization are intense ideological debates over market regulation, social inequality, redistribution, and the role of the state.Trade Review“McManus’s book marks a turning point in the political economy of the welfare state. After decades of retrenchment, the global financial crisis of 2008 caused a thorough-going ‘repoliticization’ of the welfare state. Left parties suddenly parted ways with the right on austerity and those that did not were badly punished by voters, in some cases even disappearing. Populist parties advocated more spending. In all the different welfare state worlds, politics is back. This fabulous book shows why and how.” —Mitchell Orenstein, University of Pennsylvania “This book provides a comparative overview of the responses to the global financial crisis and the political dynamics at work in different European welfare states. Faber & Faber Up the Republic
Book SynopsisIn this important book, historians, lawyers, economists and writers come together to put a coherent case: that although the Irish economic collapse has resulted in national humiliation, renewed emigration and a decline in living standards for the majority of the population, there is still hope that the country can be reformed and renewed.Irish politicians offered the now notorious blanket guarantee to all the banks which had got in over their heads during the great property bubble - including one that had become little more than a criminal enterprise. A different set of politicians grimly enforces the consequences of that guarantee, locking an entire generation of Irish men and women into paying for the mistakes of greedy bankers and their corrupt friends in government. The energy of hope has to come from elsewhere. These essays demonstrate how simple measures and different economic and social policies could release that energy and fulfil the promise of

Book SynopsisIn her examination of juvenile misconduct, Kathleen Jones reveals the complex history of “child guidance,” a specialized psychological service developed early in the twentieth century which prompted our reliance on psychological explanations for juvenile offenses and ultimately lead to a harsh critique of American mothers.Trade ReviewIn Taming the Troublesome Child, Kathleen W. Jones provides an eloquent, erudite account of how, during the first half of this century, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers banded together as a child guidance team to claim sole authority in understanding the causes of and cures for problematic behavior...Her account is well written, informative, interesting, and intelligent. -- Daniel J. Kindlon * New England Journal of Medicine *This book forced me to consider American culture and the development of the Child Guidance Movement in the first half of the 20th century...I realised that the very basis of my existence as an EP [educational psychologist] was being questioned...[This book] raises issues about role, identity and the nature and origination of troublesome behaviour in a way that deserves thoughtful reflection by all EPs. The notion that we have to invent our own roles and then have to find ways of justifying our existence within the reality we have created, in a shilling society, is pertinent to us all. I am grateful to Kathleen Jones that I was offered the opportunity to reflect upon my role as a psychologist in society. -- Jan Passmore * Division of Educational & Child Psychology Newsletter *Using the records of Boston's Judge Baker Guidance Center from 1920 to 1945, Jones tells a complex story of how the child guidance movement, staffed by teams of physicians, psychiatrists, and social workers, became the authority for treatment of troublesome youth...Taming the Troublesome Child is a superbly researched, clearly written book that makes an important contribution to the history of child welfare, family, psychiatry, professionalization, and gender. -- E. W. Carp * Choice *A beautifully researched, clearly written study of the psychological turn in American child-rearing, this book will interest clinicians as well as historians. By looking at the evolution of the 'troublesome child,' Jones explores why psychological explanations and regimens gained such appeal among American parents and professional experts in the first half of the twentieth century. Particularly impressive are Jones's efforts to include children themselves as actors in the historical narrative and her insights into 'mother blaming' as an American passtime. A first-rate contribution to the field. -- Nancy Tomes, State University of New York at Stony BrookThrough the lens of the famous Judge Baker Center for Children in Boston, founded in 1917, Kathleen Jones tells the fascinating story of the evolution of care and concern for troubled and troublesome young people in the United States. She shows how therapy has been hostage to the nature-nurture debate, conflict and cooperation among psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and the struggle for preeminent authority in the plan of action for a case by the family, the court, medical, social service, and educational institutions. Finally, she shows how the family lost ground in the power struggle as mothers became the focus of popular attempts to explain maladaptations by children. -- Charles V. Willie, Harvard Graduate School of EducationIn this provocative and seminal work, Kathleen Jones illuminates the ambivalent responses of American society to young offenders. She analyzes with sensitivity the interactions among juveniles, parents, and a variety of professional groups. In the end, child guidance became a framework for the ordering of age relationships as well as a symbol of the ambiguity of psychiatric authority. This book should be required reading for all those interested in the history of childhood and the development of the professions. -- Gerald N. GrobTaming the Troublesome Child weaves together an intellectual history of child psychiatry, a cultural analysis of ideas about children and childhood, and a perceptive discussion of the day-to-day workings of one of the nation's premier child guidance clinics. Jones shows definitively that psychiatric mother-blaming pre-dated 'momism' and the pop Freudian psychology of the 1950s. Remarkable for its many insights into the cultural as well as intellectual roots of current thinking about children's misbehavior, this elegant book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in family history or psychology--and for anyone who has a child. -- Molly Ladd-Taylor, York UniversityI found this an exceptionally shrewd, careful, and thought-provoking book. Dr. Jones reads institutional records well and uses the rich case-study materials available at Judge Baker incisively; and she places all this intelligently and sometimes gracefully into a larger social-historical context. One learns much from this book on a first reading, and it will prove a useful book to have on one's shelf. -- John Modell, Center for the Study of Human Development, Brown UniversityTaming the Troublesome Child resonates with issues relevant for sociologists Much of the book reads, moreover, like a constructionist treatise in social problem development, as claimsmakers endeavored to typify their particular versions of the problem child. Processes of popularization involved in extending the child guidance message, cultural acceptance of that message, and the related legitimating of the emerging profession and rhetoric of child psychiatry are also sociological nuggets embedded in the larger historical text. Taming the Troublesome Child is well written, minutely detailed, and scholarly in execution. -- Michele A. Harvard University Press The Sound of Modern Polish Poetry
Book SynopsisThe Sound of Modern Polish Poetry unearths recordings from Polish poets such as Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, and Zbigniew Herbert. Analyzing their singular performance styles, Aleksandra Kremer argues that twentieth-century Polish artists developed new aesthetics of reading and novel concepts of the poetic self.Trade ReviewKremer shows…public poetry readings, especially in times of upheaval, were lofty, almost religious events…It is precisely through those authorial renditions, however, that we can glimpse the intricate relationships between the poet, the poem and the audience. Kremer investigates this rarely researched area using the recordings of several prominent Polish poets born in the first decades of the twentieth century. Her method is an odd but effective combination of machine-assisted, quantitative analysis of the poets’ pitch, stress and intonation with impressionistic digressions about their art, life and sociopolitical involvements…Kremer captures the moment when poetry ceases to be fixed on a page and enters time, with all its ephemerality and contingency. -- Jaroslaw Anders * Times Literary Supplement *Brilliant…The Sound of Modern Polish Poetry is an impressive work of scholarship…Given the dearth of scholarship on Polish literature in English, this is a wonderful addition to knowledge, and one that will delight any reader interested in Polish poetry, culture and history. -- E. M. Stańczyk * Slavonic and East European Review *An impeccably researched, well-argued, and original work of scholarship. It is also an erudite and highly readable history of twentieth-century Polish literature and the individuals who shaped it…The book’s unique approach will doubtless appeal to many readers and open new avenues of research on the intersection between literature, performance, and technology. -- Łukasz Wodzyński * Russian Review *Excellent…Her analyses of the selected recordings create surprising constellations and shed light on the development of Polish poetry, as well as on the historical and cultural changes that affected the writers’ self-awareness and the reception of their recordings. Kremer’s book can therefore serve as a manual on the cultural and intellectual history of postwar Poland. -- Łukasz Tischner * Slavic Review *An exemplary study of poets’ sound recordings, public and private, in postwar Poland. Aleksandra Kremer reads poetic performance styles through history, aesthetics, national culture, ideology, and translation, often using machine-assisted prosodic analysis. Her close listenings reveal the many ways in which poets’ voicings exceed their texts. -- Charles Bernstein, author of Close Listening: Poetry and the Performed WordErudite, lively, and brilliant, this book examines Polish culture through an original point of entry: poetry performance. Exploring the audio practices of canonical modern poets within the context of history, Kremer achieves a true breakthrough in literary and performance studies. -- Irena Grudzińska-Gross, author of Czesław Miłosz and Joseph Brodsky: Fellowship of PoetsListening closely to an audio archive of postwar Polish poets including Miłosz, Herbert, Różewicz, and Szymborska, Aleksandra Kremer shows how each one navigated the cultural and political pressure to embody the Polish people and country. These writers strove to recapture the singularity of everyday speech, wresting their voices from the state and the dramatic stage actors who often performed poetry. The paradox at the center of this rich account is how the strategic downsizing enabled by tape recording ultimately expanded Polish poets’ range of address. -- Lytle Shaw, author of Narrowcast: Poetry and Audio ResearchAleksandra Kremer makes a compelling case for modern Polish culture as a ‘laboratory of poetry performance’ in this original, masterfully researched study. It is a must-read not just for specialists, but for anyone interested in postwar Polish writing or indeed, in new ways of combining the humanities with technology while doing full justice to both. -- Clare Cavanagh, author of Lyric Poetry and Modern Politics: Russia, Poland, and the West

Gill Against the Tide
Book SynopsisAgainst the Tide is a story told with honesty and great emotion; the narrative of a life in which tragedy and good fortune succeeded each other with bewildering speed. After training as a doctor, Noël Browne experienced at first hand the devastating ravages of tuberculosis both personally and professionally. Drawn to politics, he was appointed Minister for Health on his first day in the Dáil at the age of thirty three. His single-minded campaign for reform of the health system, especially the Mother and Child Scheme of 1951, encountered the strenuous opposition of both the Catholic Church and the medical establishment. Abandoned by his party colleagues, he embarked on a stormy political career over the following thirty years. For nearly forty years, Noel Browne''s name has been synonymous with political controversy. He was idolised by his supporters; demonised by those who opposed him. Against the Tide was an instant bestseller on its publication in 1986. It has become a classic political memoir - subjective, passionate, controversial and beautifully written.

Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Fueling Our Fears
Book SynopsisAfter September 11, many in the American public and media zeroed in on Muslims in America and the world, irresponsibly linking_intentionally or not_Muslims at large with terrorism. This well-researched book explores this focus and its implications. At the same time, the authors do not leave out the opinion of Muslim Americans, exploring their views about the American media and its influence, their attitudes toward non-Muslim Americans and, just as important, their opinions on postD9/11 U.S. counterterrorist policies and practices. This book not only serves students and scholars in the fields of Middle East studies, media studies, and international communication but is also an enlightening read to anyone interested in mainstream America''s perception of Muslims.Trade ReviewBrigitte Nacos and Oscar Torres-Reyna have written a fascinating book about Muslim Americans and the news. The authors surprisingly find some bright spots in coverage of Muslim Americans after the tragedy of 9/11, such as a remarkably positive tone, emphasis on protecting Muslim civil rights, and expanded thematic stories about everyday Muslim life in America. The authors present convincing evidence that the press is not only a source of stereotypes but also a voice for intergroup understanding. That a positive role for the press is at least possible in difficult times is welcome news for those who care about the role of the media in a multiethnic democracy. -- Marion Just, Wellesley College; coauthor, Framing Terrorism: The News Media, the Government, and the PublicFueling Our Fears considers the media coverage and focus on Muslim-Americans after 9/11, considering Muslim civil rights, stories about everyday Muslim life in this country, and showing that press reports don't just foster stereotypes but can promote cultural understanding. Both positive and negative points come to light in a study perfect for students of Middle East issues, media studies, or ethnic American cultures. * Midwest Book Review *A sober, critical, and incisive book showing how the American media has not lived up to its charge as the watchdog of free speech. John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Night Cleaner
Book SynopsisThe idea was simple: pack a suitcase, go to another city where you have no connections and try to find a job, anonymously. That was the idea that took Florence Aubenas - one of France's most accomplished undercover journalists - on a journey into the worst recession since the Great Depression.Trade Review"Aubenas's story is bleak because it lacks a conviction that things could be different. The story lies in the rubble - literally - of the achievements and failures of organised labour."The Guardian "The Night Cleaner records Aubenas' time among those for whom the job of supermarket cashier is 'prestigious' and a refuse collector is 'well paid' ... While 'l'exception francaise' may still mean something to those in the middle, there is little sign of it in the world documented by Aubenas. Perhaps she has hit on the exception to the exception."London Review of Books "This personal account of the unmaking of the French working class is not only great journalism, it is a true work of literature: beautifully written, intense, unforgettable."Katha Pollitt, The Nation "Follow Florence Aubenas into the armies of the night, among the invisible souls who clean up the mess we make by day, absorb her insights into the great recession and its impact on the most marginal."Beatrix Campbell, author of Wigan Pier Revisited "Too often, the impact of the global recession is reduced to general statistics. But in Florence Aubenas' provocative and passionate book it is captured in exquisite detail, emotion, and human faces. Whether in Cairo, Caen, or Wisconsin, the desperation that accompanies the soul-destroying search for work and economic stability continues to push people to the brink of their patience and dignity. What makes Aubenas' book so brilliant is that this culmination of her undercover investigation does not simply linger on their lack of hope, but also on the depth of their spirit."Nomi Prins, author of It Takes a Pillage "A vivid account of the insecurities and indignities of trying to cobble together a living from the part-time, temporary jobs of the West's postindustrial economy. The insufficient hours, abrupt layoffs, and inadequate wages Aubenas describes so clearly will be with us long after the current global recession ends."Stephanie Coontz, author of The Way We Really Are: Coming to Terms with America's Changing Families "Recommended for those wanting to understand more about what it means to be on the bread line."New Times

John Wiley and Sons Ltd What Makes Life Worth Living
Book SynopsisIn the aftermath of the First World War, the poet Paul Valery wrote of a crisis of spirit , brought about by the instrumentalization of knowledge and the destructive subordination of culture to profit. Recent events demonstrate all too clearly that that the stock of mind, or spirit, continues to fall.Trade Review"Stiegler's title is bold, but make no mistake: this book really is about what makes life worth living. We can neglect this dimension – disastrously – or we can act to sustain it. A survival manual for the twenty-first century, this is also contemporary philosophy as a call to arms." Martin Crowley, University of Cambridge "This work, an excellent primer on the latest phase of Stiegler’s project and an excellent introduction to his writing, attempts to turn a thinking of the pharmakon from its resonance as poison to that of a cure to the pan-toxicity he finds in the robo-interiorities of the present and their link to eco-catastrophic outcomes. What this book also displays is that Stiegler has long been the most productive critical reader of Derrida's legacy today – and this at a time when anything like official 'deconstruction' gasps for relevance.’" Tom Cohen, State University of New York at AlbanyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements viii Introduction: A Continent on the Move 1 1 Myriad Challenges and Opportunities 5 2 A Demographic Dividend or Just More People? 21 3 Tropical Dilemmas: Disease, Water, and More 35 4 Educating Future Generations 55 5 To War Rather than to Prosper 69 6 Accountability and the Wages of Corrupt Behavior 91 7 The Infrastructural Imperative 116 8 Harnessing Mobile Telephone Capabilities 134 9 China Drives Growth 151 10 Strengthening Governance 173 11 Creating Responsible Leadership 189 Notes 216 Select Bibliography 244 Index 252

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Foucaults Last Decade
Book SynopsisOn 26 August 1974, Michel Foucault completed work on Discipline and Punish, and on that very same day began writing the first volume of The History of Sexuality. A little under ten years later, on 25 June 1984, shortly after the second and third volumes were published, he was dead. This decade is one of the most fascinating of his career. It begins with the initiation of the sexuality project, and ends with its enforced and premature closure. Yet in 1974 he had something very different in mind for The History of Sexuality than the way things were left in 1984. Foucault originally planned a thematically organised series of six volumes, but wrote little of what he promised and published none of them. Instead over the course of the next decade he took his work in very different directions, studying, lecturing and writing about historical periods stretching back to antiquity. This book offers a detailed intellectual history of both the abandoned tTrade Review'Stuart Elden's analytic portrait of Michel Foucault's final years dramatically testifies to the developing strength and power of critical observation that defined his writing and reflection after the "turn" to sexuality. Elden integrates, brilliantly, the new Foucauldian topics - governmentality, a concern with neoliberalism and contemporary economic thought - with persistent intellectual principles of speaking truth to power. Elden's own thinking sensitively embodies the best critical resources of our period in this elegant consideration, which belongs on the shelves of serious scholars and students alike.' Paul A. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Genesis of the Civil War in Somalia
Book SynopsisThis study explores the genesis of the civil war in Somalia by analysing the defeat of Somalia in the 1977 Ogaden war, asserting that this defeat, which was prompted by the intervention of the USSR, was a turning point which unleashed long term socio-political forces that led to the collapse of the central government of the country. Muuse Yuusuf analyses the history of the Somali civil war, from 1977 to the present, and the role played by various actors in the conflict such as local clans, warlords and foreign powers, and examines the present day by-products of the war, such as religious extremism. Crucially, Yuusuf looks beyond the mainstream explanation for the conflict that of rival clans fighting over resources. By recognising the impact of foreign military interventions in Somalia, from superpower rivalry during the cold war to the war-on-terror, on the initiation and perpetuation of the Somali conflict, the book attempts to identify foreign military intervention as a new paradTrade ReviewSomalia is a country with one people who speak one language, but which has all the same been wracked by wars and divisions.
