  • Psychoanalytic Work with Children in Hospital

Taylor & Francis Ltd Psychoanalytic Work with Children in Hospital

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPsychoanalytic Work with Children in Hospital presents the experiences of a psychoanalyst working within a hospital paediatric department. It explores the possibilities for applying psychoanalytic theory when working with children in hospital and how it can be extended to include parents, caregivers, health care staff and volunteers. Each chapter of the book addresses an issue or area of professional experience that presented Franco D'Alberton with clinical or technical questions, outlining the core concern and then exploring his attempt to provide answers to these questions. This volume presents many possible applications of psychoanalytic theory in a paediatric hospital, encompassing issues encountered by health care staff and volunteers as well as by parents and their hospitalized children, such as physical pain, meetings and information sharing and group settings. It also describes therapeutic interventions directed towards both children and parents. This bTrade Review'In a period when psychoanalysis is often under attack, this book comes as a real breath of fresh air. Beyond more typical psychoanalytic treatment, psychoanalysis conducted without a couch, in the hospital, continues to be of immense help to children and their families in making sense of their symptoms and in better understanding how development is affected by suffering. We owe a debt of gratitude to Franco D’Alberton for proceeding in the wake of Anna Freud’s pioneering work, against all odds, to accomplish this important clinical psychoanalytic work.'Bernard Golse, Emeritus Professor of Child Psychiatry (University of Paris), Psychoanalyst (APF) and President of the European Association for Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, France'It is a pleasure to recommend Dr. Franco D’Alberton’s book to a wide readership of health care professionals including paediatricians, nurses, and psychotherapists. Dr. D’Alberton succeeds in expounding to the reader several major strands in his thinking; one is how the clinician can open up a space for reflection on emotions and the unconscious implications of somatic symptoms in a child. A second strand concerns how somatic illness in a child can affect the entire family. The third is to give clinical accounts of his consultation work at paediatric centres with a methodology that he describes in a vivid and warm way. All in all, his idea of "bringing the psychoanalytic couch to the children’s hospital", that is, introducing a mind-opening perspective to patients and clinicians alike, is equally interesting and important.'Björn Salomonsson, Child psychoanalyst (IPA), Associate professor child psychiatry, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm'"Every Time Freud is Right, a Psychologist Dies". Not elegant, but this T-shirt slogan flags my resistance, expecting environment or endeavour alien to UK paediatrics. After subbing some terms, and my usual cringe at the power imbalance between the unknowing patient and the interpreting psych, came the recognisable complex interplay of psychological and physical presentation, insights, and co-working. Ceasing my internal theory-tug-rope I was, soon writing, "WIZE" and "YES!" in the margins. Likening hospital psychology to basil, ‘good with most soups’, D’Alberton introduces identity, what you have vs what you are, upholds intellectual curiosity, centres societal and family context, and gives us the psycho-dynamics of interprofessional organisational systems. Chapters of well written wisdom are made accessible, organised by theoretical fundamentals and specific clinical concerns, e.g. Neonates, Pain and Memory; Parent-Child Consultations; Functional Disturbances, and chapters on group work with staff. The work is modern, relevant, enjoyable and above all helpful. It is a book that nourishes as it teaches; reminding us that our wide ranging medical and psychological practice is interpersonal and intrapersonal, and mind/body severance is futile. Parentification - the assumption of responsibility for the welfare of family members by children and adolescents - is increasing as a result of various forces both inside and outside of the family. Evidence suggests that pathological parentification of children has serious consequences for them, and for succeeding generations, as do other forms of maltreatment.; This work is an exploration of the forces at work in families with parentified children - and the treatment strategies that hold the promise of interrupting a cycle of destructive behaviour.; The author begins by guiding the reader from conceptualization to possible causes and manifestations of parentification, facilitating a clear understanding of how and why this scenario is common. The second part of the book builds on this foundation to introduce methods of assesment, treatment, and prevention. Book SynopsisWorking with Relational and Developmental Trauma in Children and Adolescents focuses on the multi-layered complex and dynamic area of trauma, loss and disrupted attachment on babies, children, adolescents and the systems around them. The book explores the impact of relational and developmental trauma and toxic stress on children's bodies, brains, relationships, behaviours, cognitions, and emotions. The book draws on a range of theoretical perspectives through reflective exercises, rich case studies, practical applications and therapeutic strategies. With chapters on wider organisational and systemic dynamics, strength-based practices and the intergenerational transmission of relational trauma, Karen Treisman provides a holistic view of the pervasive nature and impact of working with trauma. Working with Relational and Developmental Trauma in Children and Adolescents will be of interest to professionals working with children and families in the communityTrade Review"Dr Karen Treisman has written a most comprehensive book for preparing clinicians to work with the complexities of treating children and adolescents who have experienced developmental trauma. The challenges of providing such treatment is great on many levels and Dr Treisman addresses them all, from understanding and assessment to providing the most appropriate therapies for these young people and their caregivers. Not stopping there, Dr Treisman also informs us of the need to provide sensitive interventions within systems such as social services, education, and residential care that may themselves become traumatized through the challenges of caring for these very troubled children and youth. An important contribution to the field for both experienced clinicians and those just entering it." - Daniel Hughes, Clinical Psychologist, developer of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, author of Building the Bonds of Attachment, 2nd edition, (2006), and Attachment-Focused Family Therapy Workbook (2011)."An exceptional book by an expert clinician! This volume articulately delivers the essentials of trauma intervention with children and adolescents whose case histories are both complex and compelling. It emphasizes the importance of applying neurobiology-informed and brain-wise approaches, providing practitioners with a solid grounding in current best practices and trauma assessment through a highly accessible and readable format. All mental health professionals will find valuable resources, richly illustrated case examples, and pragmatic strategies to immediately apply in their work with youth that will expand their clinical repertoires in work with relational and developmental trauma." - Cathy Malchiodi, PhD, LPCC, LPAT, ATR-BC, REAT—Founder/Director, Trauma-Informed Practices and Expressive Arts Therapy Institute "This book is a wonderful resource for practitioners who work with children who have experienced relational and developmental trauma. The book includes a comprehensive overview of the impact of trauma on children, as well as assessment and treatment options. Dr Treisman also covers working with traumatized children in settings such as schools and residential care. There are a number of dermatological or radiologically demonstrable musculoskeletal lesions that have been, or could be mistaken for, intentional physical abuse by the inexperienced or untrained observer. Book SynopsisTo study the phenomenon of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea. While to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all. Sir William Osler Over a period of five years, the impact of computed tomography (CT) on pediatric neuroradiology at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, has been, as expected, in the assessment of the brain and its abnormalities. Concurrent with this application was the introduction of Metrizamide (Amipaque, Nyegaard & Co. AS, Oslo, Norway), a water-soluble CSF contrast medium, used primarily as a myelog raphic agent. The subsequent application of the wide-aperture CT scanner to imaging of the spine in children provided remarkable advances in the clinical management of spinal disease since CT is far more accurate than standard neuroradiologic procedures. The extensively updated second edition includes a detailed overview of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and their application. Much more than an inventory of measurement tools (although for the interested reader, the full range of relevant measures are reviewed in exquisite detail), the book explores both the art and science of using psychometric assessment to understand the diversity of abilities and needs of individuals on the spectrum. The contributors also offer rich insights about intervention in clinical and educational settings and address such important contemporary issues as the cognitive potential of minimally verbal individuals and the importance of understanding sex differences. A vital, in-depth reference for anyone involved in assessing ASD and its complex comorbidities."--Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, MD, Division Director, Developmental Pediatrics; Professor, Department of Pediatrics; and Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Chair in Autism, University of Alberta, Canada "If there is one constant in the field of autism, it is the state of flux. Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment are all areas where professionals in the field must work to keep up to date with the science. This timely second edition is a 'must have' for serious autism researchers as well as all professionals and advanced students involved in diagnosis and assessment. It includes well-chosen chapter topics, in-depth coverage of major issues and techniques, helpful case studies, and even a chapter on the pesky pseudoscience that dogs the field. Discussions of historic and future directions provide a nice context for the current state of the art."--Laura Schreibman, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Research Professor, Department of Psychology, University of California, San Diego "Goldstein and Ozonoff have assembled an excellent compendium of cutting-edge information on assessment of people with ASD. Each chapter contributes a layer of knowledge applicable to basic and complex assessment issues. I will definitely keep this volume close at hand for my own clinical practice and as an essential training guide."--Catherine E. Book SynopsisObesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that often continue into adulthood. Implementing prevention programs and getting a better understanding of treatment for youngsters is important to controlling the obesity epidemic. The term "childhood obesity" may refer to both children and adolescents. Between 5-25 percent of children and teenagers in the United States are obese. As with adults, the prevalence of obesity in the young varies by ethnic group. It is estimated that 5-7 percent of White and Black children are obese, while 12 percent of Hispanic boys and 19 percent of Hispanic girls are obese. Some data indicate that obesity among children is on the increase. The second National Children and Youth Fitness Study found 6-9 year olds to have thicker skinfolds than their counterparts in the 1960s. During the same period, others documented a 54 percent increase in the prevalence of obesity among 6-11 year olds. This book examines leading research in this area of great concern to society.

  • Trauma Informed Care in the Perinatal Period

Liverpool University Press Trauma Informed Care in the Perinatal Period

Book SynopsisPregnancy is a crucial point of intersection between generations. During pregnancy, women with a childhood maltreatment history have a 12-fold increased risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although awareness of the need for trauma-informed care and trauma-specific interventions is increasing in the fields of addiction and mental health treatment, there are no front-line programmes for the childbearing year that address maltreatment-related PTSD. The authors address these intergenerational cycles of childhood maltreatment and psychiatric vulnerability; they provide a resource to facilitate incorporating trauma-informed care and trauma-specific interventions into maternity services; and they signal the opportunities for improving outcomes for childbearing women with a history of childhood maltreatment. This volume provides an overview of information that child welfare and perinatal professionals can use in their work to move towards providing trauma informed care and developing trauma-specific interventions to improve intergenerational outcomes.Trade Review'The authors and editors of Trauma Informed Care in the Perinatal Period argue that psychosocial care is just as critical for mothers, infants, and society at large as is medical care, and point out that it has been agonizingly slow to catch up to the medical model. This is a research-laden book that takes a systems approach to both examining the roots of familial and societal violence, and exploring how to best deal with these complex issues as a collaborative front…This is a book for clinicians and researchers. Each chapter builds on the previous one, and research charts are included, allowing readers to easily find original articles and information. It is a worthwhile read that deftly probes into the reasons trauma-informed care should be included in the perinatal period, and possible ways to make this happen systemically.'APPPAH Birth PsychologyTable of ContentsThe Contributors. Book SynopsisThe book is targeted at all practitioners in the helping and enabling professions working with children and young people, and is essential reading for anyone undertaking training where elements of psychotherapy and counselling are requisite to practice. As well as a guide for trainees in the helping professions, the book also speaks to advancing practitioners insofar as essential elements of the therapeutic relationship, such as containment, trust and transference, are re-cast in light of the modern challenges of working with children, especially young children. There are an increasing number of courses in the UK (and abroad) which focus on developing practitioners who are delivering early interventions for mental health issues and so The Essentials of Counselling and Psychotherapy in Primary Schools offers a strong underpinning with a particular focus that offers a marker for the development of the special interest section of the UKCP. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Adolescent Gun Violence Prevention: Clinical and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEach year, gun violence kills approximately 2,700 and injures approximately 14,500 children in the U.S.; the overwhelming majority of child gun deaths are among teenagers who die by homicide or suicide. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for Black teens. A recent spate of high-profile tragedies involving children, such as the Newtown mass shooting in 2012 and the Parkland mass shooting in 2018, have reinvigorated a national debate about the role of guns in our private and public spaces. Physicians, and in particular pediatricians, have become increasingly vocal about the need to address the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S.This book serves as an in-depth, comprehensive guide to adolescent gun violence prevention. It describes the epidemiology of teen gun violence in the U.S. by focusing on the parallel epidemics that claim the most lives: gun suicide among rural white males, and gun homicide among urban Black males. It offers in-depth reviews of key concepts that are crucial to reaching a meaningful understanding of gun violence. The text also addresses specific methods of intervention at various levels of society, from the individual; to the local community; and finally to the entire nation. This first of its kind book is a valuable reference for physicians, public health scientists, policy-makers, gun reform advocates, and anyone interested in working towards a safer future for young people.Table of Contents

  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Healing Power of Touch – Guidelines for Nurses and Practitioners: External Applications in Pediatrics

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book offers precise and highly informative instructions for nurses and caregivers on how to select external applications for various indications and how to perform them on children. It also enables readers to gain a deeper understanding of the skin, its functions and the therapeutic potential of external applications. The sense of touch is the first sensation that develops in the body during embryonal development; therefore, it is essential for orientation in the world from the beginning of life. The skin is known as the body's protective mantle. It is the largest sensory organ of the human body and plays a key role in perception, social interaction and health. Touch and external applications to the skin can have a lasting effect on overall health and wellbeing and contribute to the healing of various conditions in children. Through the skin, children react sensitively to external influences like natural active ingredients and touch. These mechanisms are particularly relevant with regard to the deep relationship between the skin and the organism as a whole. External applications use these mechanisms to support the health and healing processes in children. The book is intended for healthcare professionals interested in complementing conventional pediatric care with external applications, especially in daily use by nurses and caregivers. Nurses will find guidance from complementary medicine and care to deal with various indications occurring in various pediatric fields like pediatric surgery, psychiatry, oncology, intensive care, neonatology and during the phases of child development. In addition to the detailed descriptions of the application techniques, it provides insights into the theory behind external applications and explains the mechanisms of action. Book SynopsisThis book is a concise practical guide designed to facilitate the clinical decision-making process in the management of pediatric skin cancers. Dermatologists, oncologists and general pediatricians who offer primary care to children must be knowledgeable in identifying and managing dermatological cancers, and this title provides insightful reviews of a number of common and rare dermatologic cases. Clinical cases are a key component in modern medical education, assisting the trainee or recertifying clinician to work through unusual scenarios using best practice techniques. Pediatric dermatology is a particularly important discipline in this regard since it is a highly visual subject requiring the reader to describe often very subtle differences in the presentation of patients and define accurately the diagnostic and management criteria on which to base their clinical decision-making. Clinical Cases in Pediatric Skin Cancers concisely covers how to approach diagnosing and managing skin cancers in pediatric patients. Each chapter focuses on a particular case and emphasizes how to make an appropriate choice when deciding which diagnostic tool or management strategy would be most suitable. Potential complications are detailed and management tips provided to enable the reader to develop a deep understanding of how approach the care of these patients within their day-to-day clinical practice. This book therefore represents an ideal up-to-date resource for all practitioners who encounter these cases as part of their everyday practice.Table of Contents20-30 cases/chapters of 4-6 pages (=c. 2500 words) that cover the discipline in a structured fashion and covering all aspects of the topicChapters will include the following:Conventional melanoma Spitzoid melanomaCongenital melanocytic nevus MelanomaBasal Cell CarcinomasSquamous Cell Carcinomas Benign skin neoplasmsGenetic skin neoplasmsVirus induced skin neoplasms in children

  • Symptom-Based Approach to Pediatric Neurology

Springer International Publishing AG Symptom-Based Approach to Pediatric Neurology

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPrimary health care providers such as pediatricians and family medicine physicians commonly encounter children with neurologic symptoms such as headache, double vision, facial weakness etc. Most books currently available in the specialty of pediatric neurology are “condition” or “disorder” based, and most of them are geared towards pediatric neurologists, not generalists who take care of children. A common thread amongst most currently available books in Pediatric Neurology is that the practitioner already knows what “condition” or “disorder” the child is suffering from. This book focuses on symptoms to a large extent. However, children with chronic neurological conditions will follow up with their primary care physicians after their visit with the sub-specialists. They may have questions or ongoing concerns regarding the diagnosis that has been made or being considered. This book attempts to provide information to the primary care physician regarding management and follow up of such children as well. This book serves as a guide for busy clinicians who take care of children presenting with neurological symptoms- with special emphasis on symptoms that are commonly encountered in clinical practice. For each symptom, a brief introduction is given as well as a definition and epidemiologic information for the given symptom. Readers are also instructed on what historical features and physical examinations are essential in narrowing the differential diagnosis. A recommendation on the management of the condition is then established. Instructions on when one should refer the patient to subspecialists for further evaluation and management are clearly laid out. Finally, a list of appropriate resources is provided for families, as well as clinical pearls that can be quickly scanned when one is pressed for time. The overarching goal of this book is to enable the primary care physician to make a confident diagnosis, triage efficiently and initiate treatment if need be. Written by experts in the field, Symptom-Based Approach to Pediatric Neurology is a valuable resource for evaluation and management of children presenting with neurologic symptoms for primary care providers who take care of children.Table of Contents1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisFailure to Thrive (FTT) is a multifactorial illness requiring the systematic application of evidence in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team-based approach. Evidence suggests most cases of FTT can be diagnosed using key elements of the patient history and physical examination including appropriate growth assessment, and that laboratory testing is usually unhelpful in determining an etiology. Despite this, there is wide variation in the definition, evaluation, treatment, costs, and outcomes of FTT patients, with subsequent burdens on the healthcare system. A suggested approach to the differential diagnosis and management of FTT is to review calories – inadequate caloric intake, excessive calorie losses, and/or increased caloric intake (i.e. increased metabolic demand) – while acknowledging the available resources along the continuum of patient care. Implementing evidence-based practice for FTT provides improvement opportunities for providers and potentially has significant impact on the healthcare system. This book is designed to present a practical and concise handbook on the diagnosis and management of failure to thrive (FTT)/ malnutrition for quick reference by trainees and practitioners by using case examples and available evidence in the current literature. This book is divided into 7 chapters in a logical progression of defining, diagnosing, and managing FTT with cases in each chapter to further illustrate evidence-based care.Table of Contents1.
