Book SynopsisChronic pain is a significant health problem for many children and adolescents and is often challenging for healthcare professionals to treat. Estimated to affect approximately 15% to 30% of children, chronic and recurrent pain occurs most commonly in the pediatric population without clearly identifiable underlying physical etiology, such as pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, or complex regional pain syndrome. Chronic or recurrent pain may also be associated with ongoing underlying medical conditions, such as arthritis, cancer, Crohn''s disease, or sickle cell disease. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain in Children and Adolescents provides a practical guide for implementing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for children and their families coping with the consequences of persisting pain. The book is divided into three sections. The first section presents a brief history, theoretical foundations, and background concerning the develTrade Review"With that all too rare combination of extremely careful scholarship and very practical information, Dr. Palermo has provided the field with an excellent, much-needed, and comprehensive text containing state-of-the-art information about the etiology and treatment of chronic pain in children. It is a comprehensive work which integrates analytic theories and concepts with a contemporary systems model of development and draws on scholarly research from neighboring fields.Trade ReviewIt has been decades since psychoanalysis has had an adequate textbook on child and adolescent development. Gilmore and Meersand have provided us with an excellent one that avoids the parochialism of traditional psychoanalytic texts, integrating the disparate schools that populate the modern day pluralistic world of psychoanalysis while also weaving in the relevant findings from cognitive and neuroscience. This book will be essential for psychoanalytic candidates around the world. * Alan Sugarman, Ph.D, Training and Supervising Child, Adolescent, & Adult Psychoanalyst, San Diego Psychoanalytic Center; Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego *Table of ContentsChapter 1: A psychoanalytic orientation to development in the 21st century ; Chapter 2: Infancy: psychoanalytic theory, developmental research and the mother-child dyad in the first year of life ; Chapter 3: Toddlerhood: separation-individuation, rapprochement and the forerunners of superego development ; Chapter 4: The oedipal phase and the oedipal complex: developmental advances and theoretical considerations ; Chapter 5: Latency: The era of learning, autonomy and peer relationships ; Chapter 6: Preadolescence and early adolescence: overview of the adolescent process; challenges of sexual maturation; pre- and early adolescence. ; Chapter 7: Middle and Late Adolescence: sex and gender, individuation, and identity in progression toward the threshold of adulthood. ; Chapter 8: Emerging adulthood and contemporary society: Development in the third decade ; Glossary ; Index

Book SynopsisNeuroinfections presents 35 subjects, each with a different neurologic infectious or inflammatory disorder. A short vignette provides salient clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory studies, spinal fluid and imaging findings for each patient. A highly focused discussion leads the reader to the final diagnosis. Important features of the history, neurologic examination, findings on CSF and imaging are emphasized. There is no other book that provides a careful case description that includes all the neurologic features of 19 neurologic diseases produced by virus, as well as cases of bacterial meningitis and other infections produced by spirochetes, protozoans and prions, as well as inflammatory diseases of the nervous system of unknown etiology. A unique feature of the book is that every patient described is a real-time case that the author has seen or on whom he provided consultation. Anyone who reads every case in this book will know the essentials needed to diagnose and care for patientTrade ReviewThis is a useful, easy to read, 'charming' book highlighting the clinical presentation of common and not so common infections of the nervous system, written by one of the leaders in clinical and research neurovirology. By using the format of clinical vignettes the reader is immediately engaged and then is asked and told what to do next... Treatment is evidence based when such evidence is available and when not; the reader is provided the approach of an experienced neurologist with a career in neuroinfectious diseases... While this book serves as a resource to which one return when confronted with a patient with a clinical presentation that might well be due to infection or inflammation of the nervous system, it is also possible to simply read the book just for 'enjoyment'. I know I did. -- Robert P Lisak, MD, FRCP, FAAN, Parker Webber Chair in Neurology, Professor of Immunology and Microbiology, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI Dr Gilden has written a remarkably concise and useful guide to the management of a wide range of infections of the nervous system... and he has managed the very difficult feat of giving a wealth of key information about each condition while at the same time getting over with commendable clarity all the key aetiological, clinical and management points... I am unaware of any previous book on this subject, in particular in relation to virus infections of the nervous system, which manages to present such an integrated, comprehensive, and practical approach as has been achieved here. This book will undoubtedly be of considerable value to a wide range of readers including neurologists, infectious diseases and general medicine consultants, specialist trainees, medical students and other health professionals. -- Professor Peter GE Kennedy CBE, MD, PhD, DSc, FRCP, FMedSci, FRSE, Burton Chair of Neurology, Glasgow University, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, Scotland, UK Thirty-five succinctly analyzed and cogently discussed vignettes are written by a world renowned clinical neurologist with extensive experience in infections and inflammatory diseases of the nervous system. The cases are practical, well-written and packed with important teaching points and clinical pearls. The author does not shy away from controversy and provides strong opinions on management when scientific data is not available. This is a book that all clinical neurologists should keep on their desk. -- Professor Oded Abramsky, MD, PhD, FRCP, Chairmen Emeritus of the Department of Neurology, Dean Emeritus of the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel "Neuroinflammatory diseases are among the most important, inherently interesting, sometimes exotic, constantly changing, and always challenging problems in medicine. In this wonderful volume, Don Gilden has brought together a lifetime of clinical experience to highlight, in an accessible case method format, both the common and the rare. The result is a unique survey of the field by one of its true giants, with insightful pedagogical insights that burst forth from every page. There is new, practical information here for everyone, from students to the most seasoned practitioner." -- Stephen L. Hauser, MD, Professor & Chair, Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, CA In this book, Dr. Gilden addresses 35 different cases of clinical infectious and inflammatory diseases of the nervous system through highly insightful presentations. Each case tells a practical story of how such diseases begin, are diagnosed and are managed and treated. -- Howard L. Lipton, MD, Department of Microbiology-Immunology, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL Dr. Gilden has provided a very engaging approach to helping clinicians who care for individuals with a wide variety of infections and inflammatory diseases of the nervous system. The challenge of a case description is followed by his analysis of pathogenesis, then management, and finally bulleted "Key Points to Remember." Brief bibliographies list carefully selected references. Neuroinfections will be most useful to neurology and internal medicine residents, and to experienced clinicians who may not be dealing with these disorders on a daily basis. -- Donald Silberberg, MD, Professor and Chair Emeritus, Department of Neurology, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA "This volume will have a significant place in the clinician's library. The format of 1) a case report, 2) what to do now (diagnosis and treatment), 3) key points about the infection and 4) further reading will serve as an excellent manual for students, residents and clinicians. It is clearly and concisely written and will be important in both academic settings and to private practitioners." -- Leslie P. Weiner, MD, Department of Neurology, Keck Medical Center of USC, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA "A helpful and informative summary of major etiologies of neurologic infections, in an enjoyable, easy-to-read format." -- Emerging Infectious Diseases "The narrative is very clear and well written and flows smoothly. ... It is an excellent introduction to a complicated and difficult field and should be available to the neurology resident and general neurologist as well as the specialist." --Journal of the Neurological SciencesTable of ContentsSECTION I Virus infections ; 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a pioneering book and is the first book of its kind. The book offers guidance about the use of ECT in adolescents with up to date and concise information. The editors of the book are Neera Ghaziuddin MD, MRCPsych (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA), and Garry Walter, MD, Ph.D. (University of Sydney, Australia) who spear-headed the re-introduction of ECT as a safe and an effective treatment option for a subgroup of adolescents with severe psychiatric disorders. This book offers a review of the existing literature, firsthand experience of the authors regarded as experts in their respective field and highly informative case descriptions. The book also offers a historical perspective, explaining the reasons why ECT fell out of favor, particularly among child and adolescent psychiatrists, and the resulting lost opportunity to train clinicians over many decades. Starting around the 1990''s, there has been a revival of interest, probably due to the recognition of treatment resistTrade ReviewThe book, simply put, is the current authority on what we need to know about the use of ECT in children and adolescents. I am tempted to end my review with that statement; however, that would not do justice to the significant efforts the authors and editors have put in to collate all what is known in this field today. . . A highly recommended read! * Rajeev Jairam, Australasian Psychiatry, 22(4), 2014 *This book is a masterpiece. It should be available to anyone who treats patients for whom ECT may be applicable. * Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association *The book, simply put, is the current authority on what we need to know about the use of ECT in children and adolescents... University of Chicago Press A Greenhouse for the Mind

Book SynopsisThe Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School has won worldwide recognition for its treatment of emotionally disturbed children. The school and its continuing work at the University of Chicago have been chronicled in Bruno Bettelheim's now classic books Love Is Not Enough (1950), Truants from Life (1955), The Empty Fortress (1967), and A Home for the Heart (1972). A Greenhouse for the Mind continues the story of the school, focusing on how its teachers and counselors create an educational environment in which children will want and be able to learn. Jacquelyn Seevak Sanders worked closely with Bettelheim for thirteen years as a counselor and assistant principal and since 1973 has been director of the Orthogenic School. She offers her interpretation of Bettelheim's vision of a healing world for children, as well as her own ideas and new perspectives from the last decade. In a warm and anecdotal style, Sanders relates the experiences and overarching theoretical principles that have shaped the school and its curriculum. She describes how the staff, schedules, and physical appearance of the school have been developed to create a stable and safe place to learn; how teachers confront their own emotional vulnerability; how the staff accepts the children themselves while disciplining unacceptable behavior; and how the attention of the inattentive can be gained. She chronicles the successes and setbacks of the staff in developing a curriculum that includes reading, science, and physical education, and she exemplifies the school's principles and practices through a story of an imaginary student's educational development. In addition to her experience at the Orthogenic School, Sanders has worked with teachers at all levels from nursery schools to universities, and in A Greenhouse for the Mind she passes on what she has learned about educating difficult childrenprinciples that have been helpful to both disturbed children in a unique setting and more typical children in ordinary settings. Her attention to the role of emotions in the learning process adds an often neglected dimension to traditional cognitive and instructional approaches.

Must reading! * Recommended by Dee *An inherently compelling read from cover to cover, The Future of Us: What the Dreams of Children Mean for Twenty-First-Century America is an eloquently crafted, thoughtful and thought-provoking read. * Midwest Book Review (review of paperback edition) *Table of ContentsPrefaceAuthor's Notes and AcknowledgmentsForeword, by Jane PauleyIntroduction: The Urgency of Childhood1.
