Fruzzetti, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno "Rathus and Miller are excellent clinicians and gifted writers who have once again teamed up to write a practical, relevant manual. I became absorbed by the book's content and clarity. It is practical in a way that helps clinicians speak to adolescents with compassion and work with them effectively. Jessica Kingsley Publishers An Integrative Approach to Treating Babies and
Book SynopsisWorking with babies and children is most successful when therapists have a complete understanding and overview of all appropriate treatment options, and the effects of early influences on child health and development. This book shows therapists how to consider these factors in order to work more effectively within their individual areas of expertise. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines, including Ann Diamond Weinstein, Michael Shea, Carolyn Goh, Graham Kennedy, Matthew Appleton, David Haas, Thomas Harms, Franz Ruppert, Anita Hegerty and Kate Rosati, explore the influence of pregnancy, birth and family dynamics on the physical and mental health of babies and children. They show how these factors relate to common complaints, such as excessive and different types of crying, chronic illnesses and poor immune systems, and behavioural and attachment issues, and how complementary approaches can be best applied to treat these issues. This book also offers helpful advice for working within multidisciplinary teams. Illustrated with case studies and including examples from current research, this book is a valuable resource for therapists from diverse disciplines.Trade ReviewThis book provides a great overview about how we become conditioned by early life experiences, and clearly outlines important treatment principles when working with babies, children and families. It also provides an invaluable resource for health professionals about common denominators that lie behind a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Understanding 6-7-Year-Olds
Book SynopsisWhat challenges do 6-7-year-olds face as they learn new skills and face different social situations? How do their perceptions of the world change? How can we best support them in their move towards greater independence? This accessible book provides a wealth of information to help parents, educators and carers better relate to children at this exciting, yet demanding, stage of development. From the new-found sense of rivalry between siblings or classmates, to the anxieties children feel when making new friends, Corinne Aves offers guidance on encouraging children's development and helping them to cope with changing expectations of their behaviour. She discusses the various struggles in these children's lives – such as the conflict between a child's continuing desire to please his parents and the pressure to follow the leads of his friends – and gives tips for supporting children's increasing understanding of morality. Chapters on both school and family life explain the need for discipline and order in 'middle childhood', while specific areas of development such as reading skills and learning difficulties are addressed with sensitivity and insight. Understanding 6-7-Year-Olds will prove an enlightening read for anyone hoping to better understand children at this important stage of their lives.Trade ReviewClearly based on a strict psychoanalytical perspective, this UK book is also grounded in the everyday experiences of children and informed by a lively commitment to their well-being... Not only a useful tome but also humane, intelligent and endlessly thought-provoking. -- Youthinmind.co.ukAves, a child psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, describes the experiences of six and seven year olds and how parents and educators can understand them and help them develop. In this slim volume, she explains their changing perceptions of themselves, how they understand their role in the family, school experiences and social interactions, learning to read, and their unique anxieties. -- Book NewsAs my youngest child is just coming up to her sixth birthday I was hoping to gain a new insight into her world with this book. I wasn't disappointed, as a Childcare provider we aim to treat all children as individuals but most of our training seems to be aimed at the 0-5 age range. There is a tendency to feel that older children are moving along happily and unless there are any obvious problems they can be slightly overlooked. This book was fascinating explaining the physical and mental changes that children undergo during this time. Moving from being a young child with a belief in the magical side of life to an independent learner finding their way in the world. Corinne Aves has observed children at school and during play and includes anecdotes from home as well to illustrate her points.Written in a friendly, approachable style this book would be suitable for parents, however I feel it is aimed the key stage one teachers more specifically. -- National Childminding AssociationTable of ContentsContents: Foreword, Jonathan Bradley. Plural Publishing Inc ECHO: A Vocal Language Program for Easing Anxiety
Book SynopsisECHO: A Vocal Language Program for Easing Anxiety in Conversation is for clinicians supporting individuals who may experience social anxiety related to speaking in specific situations, or with certain individuals. Anxiety has a negative impact on working memory, which can make it difficult for individuals to communicate with ease. With reduced experiences talking to a variety of people in various situations, speaking often becomes more challenging. The ECHO program was developed to build ease and comfort with social pragmatic communication, focusing on improving conversational skills for children from later elementary through teenage years. The program can be implemented by speech-language pathologists, psychologists, educators, and other facilitators (including parents), who support the needs of children and teens with selective mutism, stuttering, and those in need of social communication support. This unique intervention program combines methods of vocalization and verbalization to enhance conversational skills with role-play simulations for real-life application. There are three modules in the ECHO program that build upon each other: Module 1 uses interactive games to focus on vocal control, helping the child or teen learn how to initiate voice, modulate intonation and volume with greater ease, and produce classes of speech sounds in words and sentences. Module 2 provides targeted skills for the child or teen to use language for different purposes, change language for the listeners or situation, and follow rules for conversation and storytelling; all with online interactive games to become a more spontaneous communicator. Module 3 builds on the previous two modules by providing conversational role-plays which simulate real-life situations in school, at home, and in social and public settings. A cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) framework is applied to help reduce cognitive distortions. Oxford University Press CueCentered Therapy for Youth Experiencing Posttraumatic Symptoms
Book SynopsisTrauma can be defined as exposure to a shocking, distressing, or emotionally painful event that can result in negative mental and physical health effects. Due to its interference with development, childhood trauma is particularly detrimental and can result in symptoms including posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, dissociation, externalizing behavioral problems, and suicidal ideation. It can increase the risk of substance use, school disengagement, and academic difficulties, and it has been associated with attentional impairment, cognitive performance, and the development of self-regulation. Cue-Centered Therapy for Youth Experiencing Posttraumatic Symptoms presents a psychosocial treatment approach for children and adolescents who have been exposed to chronic traumatic experiences. Cue-Centered Therapy (CCT) derives its name from its focus on the conditioning process that results in sensitivity towards trauma-related cues. CCT addresses four core domains: cognTrade Review"There is not just one way to perform psychotherapy for PTSD. Dr. Carrión shows us another path as a thoughtful clinician and a rigorous researcher. I particularly like his emphasis on education and clear writing of the manual with session-by-session structure." --Michael S. Scheeringa, MD, MPH, Venancio Antonio Wander Garcia IV, MD, Chair in Psychiatry, and Vice-Chair of Research, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Tulane University School of Medicine "This remarkable book brings a fresh new approach to the treatment of traumatized youth. Cue-Centered Therapy is special in making children the active agents of their own treatment, empowering the child to identify triggers and choose successful strategies to change the imprint of trauma on physiology, thought, feeling, and behavior. Dr. Carrión deserves much gratitude for this enormous contribution to enabling children and families to find their own resources to recover and thrive." --Alicia F. Oxford University Press, USA Endings A Sociology of Death and Dying
Book SynopsisArguing that death is the central force shaping our social life and order, Michael Kearl draws on a wide variety of disciplines to provide a broad sociological perspective on the interrelationships of life and death. He shows how death contributes to social change, and how the meanings of death are generated to serve social functions.Working from a social as well as a psychological perspective, Kearl analyses traditional topics, including ageing, suicide, grief, and medical ethics. He also examines current issues such as the impact of the AIDS epidemic on social trust, governments'' use of death in symbolism, the business of death and dying, the political economy of doomsday weaponry, and death in popular culture.Trade Review'Michael Kearl's book should inject much-needed impetus to such academic reflection ... there is much of value in this textbook ... Kearl uses all the media available to him to lend substance to his arguments. Indeed it is this richness, together with the breadth of his inquiries, that lies at the heart of the text's strength ... written clearly and, most importantly, by someone who has obviously tried to convey many of the ideas verbally in classes and seminars. It is, consequently, both stimulating and readable.' Dr Tim Newburn, National Institute for Social Work, London, BJGC, Volume 21, No. 1, January 1993

Oxford University Press Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism
Book SynopsisSelective Mutism (SM) is an impairing behavioral condition in which a child fails to speak in certain social situations despite speaking regularly and normally in other situations. SM presents a significant mental and public health problem due to impact on the social, emotional, and academic functioning of young children at a critical point in their development. SM is closely related to childhood social phobia, but it cannot be treated in the same way because of the young age of the children affected, their lack of speech in the treatment setting, and the need for significant school involvement in treatment.Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism outlines the sequence and essential elements to guide clinicians through a comprehensive, integrated program for young children who display symptoms of SM. This approach utilizes behavioral interventions targeting gradual increases in speaking across settings in which the child initially has difficulty. The integrated nature of the therapy refers to the goal of incorporating input from the clinician with that from the parents and teacher, as well as others impacted by the lack of speech. Exposure exercises are based on behavioral techniques such as stimulus fading, shaping, and systematic desensitization that also allow for a less intense or gradual exposure to the speaking situation. These techniques are combined and used flexibly with a behavioral reward system for participation in treatment. The approach was developed by Dr. R. Lindsey Bergman as part of the UCLA Childhood OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program. The treatment protocol consists of 20 sessions, 60 minutes each, delivered over the course of 24 weeks. Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism is an invaluable guide for mental health professionals who deliver CBT-based treatment to children and want to help those with SM.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introductory Information for Therapists ; Chapter 2 Pre-Treatment Assessment and Psychoeducation (Parent Only Session) ; Chapter 3 Session 1: Introduction to Treatment and Rapport Building ; Chapter 4 Session 2: Rapport Building, Reward System, Feelings Chart ; Chapter 5 Session 3: Class Chart, Talking Ladder, Exposure Practice ; Chapter 6 Sessions 4-9: Intermediate Exposure Sessions ; Chapter 7 Session 10: Treatment Midpoint Sessions ; Chapter 8 Sessions 11-14: Intermediate Exposure Sessions ; Chapter 9 Session 15: Continued Exposure and Introduction of Transfer of Control ; Chapter 10 Sessions 16-17: Continued Exposure with Additional Focus on Transfer of Control ; Chapter 11 Sessions 18-19: Continued Exposure and Transfer of Control / Review of Progress ; Chapter 12 Session 20: Relapse Prevention and Graduation ; Chapter 13 Additional Treatment Considerations ; Appendix A: Suggested Exposure Exercises ; Appendix B: Pre-Treatment Materials ; Appendix C: Treatment Forms ; References ; About the Author

Book SynopsisChildren's Health and the Peril of Climate Change exposes the twin threats of climate change and air pollution on children's health and plans a roadmap to a brighter future with tangible solutions for governments, businesses, and individuals today.Trade ReviewIn this accessible book, Dr. Perera draws a compelling picture of the relationship between the health of the planet, the health of our children, and the necessity to act on climate. For those of us committed to environmental justice, we could do no better than to read this book and follow its guidance. For others who want a sustainable future with an economy that works, this book is essential. * Gerald Torres, Professor of Environmental Justice, Yale School of the Environment and Professor of Law, Yale Law School *This deeply researched book cuts through the black smoke of climate denial with its clear focus on climate change's impacts on children. While Dr. Perera acknowledges the gravity of the climate crisis with specific evidence of its dangers, her primary message is one of hope, articulated through climate success stories as a roadmap to a brighter future. * Philip J. Landrigan, MD, Director, Global Observatory on Pollution and Health, Boston College *It's time for all of us to stop talking about climate change as a planetary problem when in reality it's a people problem-or should I say, a young people's problem. Through scientific fact and compelling storytelling, Dr. Perera's book makes it startlingly clear that our changing climate is already threatening the health and well-being of children in every corner of the world. If you have ever asked yourself why young people everywhere are demanding climate action, this powerful book provides the evidence and inspiration to join them in the fight for a clean energy future. It's a fight we can and must win-for ourselves and for our children's future. * Gina McCarthy, former Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency *This is the manifesto we need to provide children and families with a clear message of leaving no one behind in the fight against climate change.
