Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Decisions: The Complexities of Individual and
Book SynopsisDecision-making is an activity in which everyone is engaged on a more or less daily basis. In this book, Karin Brunsson and Nils Brunsson explore the intricacies of decision-making for individuals and organizations. When, how and why do they make decisions? The authors identify four distinct ways of reasoning that decision-makers use. The consequences of decisions vary: some promote action, others impede it, and some produce more responsibility than others. With in-depth discussions of rationality, justifications and hypocrisy, the authors show how organizational and political decision processes become over-complicated and difficult for both decision makers and external observers to understand. Decisions is a concise and easy-to-read introduction to a highly significant and intriguing topic. Based on research from several fields, it provides useful reading and essential knowledge for scholars and students throughout the social sciences and for everyone who wants to understand their own decisions and those of others.Trade Review'Decision-making is often a confusing and confused process. Emotions, judgements and prejudices can all play a part, whether a decision is made by an individual, a group or an organization. The study of decision making, however, doesn't have to be either confusing or confused as this excellent book eloquently demonstrates. The four logics of decision-making identified here provide the authors with a framework which enables them to explain in clear and simple terms decisions that appear complex, confusing or irrational.' --Yiannis Gabriel, University of Bath, UK'This rich, imaginative little book offers fascinating insights into the intricacies of decision making by both individuals and organizations, and a sobering appraisal of the delayed Swedish response to the 2004 tsunami. Any new book by Karen and Nils Brunsson is a welcome treat, and this one is a gem!' --Walter W. Powell, Stanford University'Decisions: The Complexities of Individual and Organizational Decision-Making by Nils and Karin Brunsson offers an excellent introduction to the complexities of decision-making. Decades of research on decision making are succinctly summarized and presented in a refreshing and easily accessible way. Triarchy Press Ackoff's F/laws: The Cake
Book SynopsisThis is the first full collection of all 122 of Russell Ackoff's f/laws - previously only available in two separate books from Triarchy Press (Management f-Laws and Systems Thinking for Curious Managers.) Each f/law in this full collection is accompanied by Ackoff's own witty and acerbic explanatory text and (in the printed edition) by his original drawings and cartoons. The collection reverts to Ackoff's original typescript without any commentary or other introduction. As Ackoff himself says: "Over time I have become aware of some very important truths about the practice of management. These truths, which I call the 'F/laws of Management', contradict assumptions that are commonly held by managers. These simple management truths are much more important than the fundamental, but complex, truths revealed by scientists, economists, politicians, or philosophers. The truths these wise thinkers reveal are at most frosting on the cake. The truths presented here are the cake." This definitive collection distils Ackoff's wisdom and a lifetime of experience about management, leadership, innovation, teamwork and organizations. It should be required reading for anyone who works in an organization.Trade ReviewFrom reviews of previous books by Russ Ackoff that included his f/laws; "This book is fun - not something one can often say about a management book. It's also a compact piece of distilled wisdom. - Take each f/law in turn and ask how it applies to you, to your role in the organisation and the organisation as a whole. Do it seriously and you might learn a lot." Charles Handy ~ Management Today; " - you are in the presence of one of the profoundest and wittiest brains ever to engage with the bizarre human activity called management." Simon Caulkin ~ The Observer ;" - an instructive gem that should be required reading for anyone interested in effective management." Prof. Sheldon Rovin ~ Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania ;"If you ever need a reality check after stumbling out of some appalling management meeting, or just need cheering up on a long business trip, this is the book for you. Just about every myth or pompous delusion about management gets punctured - " Stefan Stern ~ Financial Times ;" - profound thoughts in digestible bites... easy to read yet full of wisdom. How much better our organizations would be if managers could learn these lessons!" Prof. Michael C Jackson ~ Hull University Business School. ;"Wit and wisdom in small doses on the deep rooted abuse of hierarchical power. It takes a Russ Ackoff to unveil myths and illusions of this kind." Goran Carstedt ~ Formerly President, Volvo Cars and Ikea Europe

Harvard University Press Deepwater Horizon
Book SynopsisIn 2010 BP’s Deepwater Horizon catastrophe spiraled into the worst human-made economic and ecological disaster in Gulf Coast history. In the most comprehensive account to date, senior systems engineers Earl Boebert and James Blossom show how corporate and engineering decisions, each one individually innocuous, interacted to create the disaster.Trade ReviewThis book offers an extremely methodical approach to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It is written in a concise, no-nonsense style, and couched in terms that a layman can understand. It is a highly original work with a well-structured argument, providing insight into the BP oil spill unavailable elsewhere. A thoroughly recommended read not only for oilfield professionals, but for all concerned parties. -- Alastair R. Fleck, Shell Global SolutionsDeepwater Horizon: A Systems Analysis of the Macondo Disaster shines a spotlight on the very high-risk situations that demand a consistent systems approach at all levels and from all parties. It demonstrates that—however popular or trendy they are today—streamlined, agile approaches don’t work in all situations. This book will be of value to business and engineering audiences, as well as anyone interested in technology policy. -- Marjory S. Blumenthal, technology policy expertDeepwater Horizon is the definitive work on an event that not only had enormous ecological repercussions, but which also shook the oil industry to its foundations. Meticulously researched, the explanation of the disaster will be comprehensible to the interested layman, while numerous annotations add depth and detail for academics and professionals. The authors’ purpose is to analyze the event, detail the lessons learned, and thereby make everyone safer. The book fulfills the first two aims admirably, and the rest is up to us. -- Andrew Kay, independent oilfield consultantModern organization theory emphasizes the central role that organizational culture and structure play in outcomes, and though this book is not on organization theory per se, it is destined to be a classic case study in the field. A great deal of safety analysis focuses on searches for the root cause of accidents and disasters, but the Deepwater Horizon incident demonstrates that the causality of some disasters has a fundamentally multifactor nature. This book should be read by anyone concerned with safety of large complex systems. -- Herb Lin, Stanford UniversityReaders wanting to know just what happened and why in the Deepwater Horizon disaster will never find a better book. -- Steve Donoghue * Open Letters Monthly *Two senior systems engineers offer a comprehensive account of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill, where escaping gas and oil destroyed the rig, killing 11, injuring dozens and creating the worst human-made ecological disaster ever in the Gulf of Mexico. The book sifts through the evidence, challenging the common explanation that the crew, under pressure to cut costs, made mistakes compounded by a safety device failure. Instead, individually innocuous corporate and engineering decisions combined to create the disaster. The complex interactions of technology, people and procedures involved in offshore drilling illustrate a systems approach that yields a better understanding of how to prevent similar disasters in the future. * ISE Magazine *Most accounts of the Deepwater Horizon disaster dwell on the drama of the rig’s last hours, as the crew struggled to cope with the well blowout and then fought to survive. Those events are also part of Boebert and Blossom’s story, but the scope of their narrative is broader. Much of the action takes place deep underground, where drilling technology meets the uncertainties of geology, or else miles away in BP’s Houston offices. Their approach is analytic rather than dramatic. Theirs is the account for readers who want to understand how such disasters come about and what strategies might have the best chance of preventing more of them. -- Brian Hayes * American Scientist *

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The New Boss
Book SynopsisAny organization, no matter how stolid, may be unsettled by the news that a new boss is about to take over. Talk in the hallways increases, staff worry about their jobs, uncertainty grows. Even when the change has happened, problems emerge when the boss who was hired to manage “from above” has to learn about the organization “from below.” In this book, Niklas Luhmann scrutinizes the relationship and shows how it is stretched to its limit by communication difficulties, demands for self-presentation, and disagreements concerning fundamental values. Many of the tensions crystallize around the question “who has the power?” It isn’t necessarily the boss, provided the employees are well versed in the art of directing their superiors. “Subtervision” is Luhmann’s term for this state of affairs, and tact is the most important means to this end. Yet caution is advised: whoever achieves mastery in subtervision may well become the new boss. This slim and thought-provoking book from one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century will be of great interest to anyone seeking to understand the dynamics and machinations of the workplace.Trade Review"While many know Niklas Luhmann in his capacity as a systems theoretician, few are aware that he has also written a number of important essays in organization theory. Penguin Putnam Inc Simply Brilliant: How Great Organizations Do
Book SynopsisCofounder of Fast Company magazine and bestselling author of Mavericks at Work and Practically Radical shows how true business innovation can spring from the unlikeliest places. Far away from Silicon Valley, in familiar, traditional, even unglamorous fields, ordinary people are unleashing extraordinary advances that amaze customers, energize employees, and create huge economic value. Their secret? They understand that the work of inventing the future doesn't just belong to geeks designing mobile apps and virtual-reality headsets, or to social-media entrepreneurs hoping to launch the next Facebook. Some of today's most compelling organizations are doing brilliant things in simple settings such as retail banks, office cleaning companies, department stores, small hospitals, and auto dealerships.William C. Taylor, cofounder of Fast Company and best-selling author of Practically Radical, traveled thousands of miles to visit these hotbeds of simple brilliance and unearth the principles and practices behind their success. He offers fascinating case studies and powerful lessons that you can apply to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways, regardless of your industry or profession. Consider, for instance, how... ·Miami Beach's dazzling 1111 Lincoln Road reimagined the humble parking garage as a high-profile public space that hosts weddings, yoga classes, and celebrity gatherings.·USAA, the financial-services giant that provides soldiers and their families with insurance and banking products, inspires frontline employees to deliver legendary service by immersing them in military culture.·Pal's Sudden Service, a fast-food chain with a cult following, serves up burgers and fries with such speed and accuracy that companies from other industries pay to learn from its astonishing discipline. ·Lincoln Electric, a manufacturer based in Euclid, Ohio, dominates its ultracompetitive markets with a fierce devotion to quality and productivity. But the key to its prosperity is a share-the-wealth model that gives everybody a sense of security and a piece of the action. It has maintained a strict no-layoff pledge since 1958. As Taylor writes: “The story of this book, its message for leaders who aim to do something important and build something great, is both simple and subversive: In a time of wrenching disruptions and exhilarating advances, of unrelenting turmoil and unlimited promise, the future is open to everybody. The thrill of breakthrough creativity and breakaway performance . . . can be summoned in all sorts of industries and all walks of life, if leaders can reimagine what’s possible in their fields.” Simply Brilliant shows you how.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Guide to Key Theories for Human Resource
Book SynopsisTrade Review‘This volume provides a comprehensive, contemporary and readable mapping of HRM’s emergence as a field of study, its theoretical foundations, and future directions for scholars and practice. Taking a unique approach to HRM, the editors skilfully present two integrative early chapters capturing the role of theory followed by a thoughtful selection of 41 entries written by well-known authors laying out each theory and its application to HRM. Key target audiences include Master’s students, PhD candidates and early career researchers; but seasoned scholars will also benefit from the detailed but short reviews in each chapter and the range of perspectives in the collection. To provide just a taster, these include perspectives embedded in principles of organisation behaviour/theory, Critical Theory, labour process theory, sensemaking, stakeholder theory, institutional theory, paradox theory, post-colonial theory, and intersectionality. The impressive range of theories included reminds us that HRM’s conceptual foundations are broad, and draw on diverse disciplinary perspectives. As a reference volume, this collection will undoubtedly not only help those wishing to learn about alternative theories, but also help researchers move beyond traditional boundaries to explore new directions in HRM research.’ -- Dora Scholarios, University of Strathclyde, UK'Since the advent of the field of human resource management critics have accused the field of lacking theory. Significant strides have been made in building and applying theory in HRM and A Guide to Key Theories for Human Resource Management Research brings together all of the progress in this area.' -- Patrick M. Wright, University of South Carolina, US‘This guide is highly valuable for human resource (HR) researchers and practitioners. Oxford University Press Practice Theory Work and Organization
Book SynopsisWhat are practice theories? Where do they come from? What do they say? Do they offer something new to the study of work and organization? Practice theories are a set of conceptual tools and methodologies for investigating, analysing, and representing everyday practice. They develop the idea that phenomena such as knowledge, meaning, science, power, organized activity, sociality, and institutions are rooted in practice. The volume provides a rigorous yet accessible introduction to this emerging area of study. Recognizing that a unified theory of practice does not exist, the book surveys the main scholarly traditions that have, collectively, contributed to the practice turn in social and organization studies. Each chapter examines the main assumptions and concepts of these traditions, discussing their distinctive contribution to work and organization studies. The chapters are accompanied by a fully worked example of how the theory can be applied to empirical research, making the text suiTrade ReviewThe book is an extremely impressive accomplishment in terms of clarification of a body of heavy weight theoretical work. By not glossing over differences in an effort to produce a synthesis, a degree of clarity is give the multivocality of practise theory. As a result, the book provides a lucid guide through the philosophical landscape. * Andrew M.Cox, University of Sheffield, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology *The book is well written and is a good 'one stop shop' that accurately portrays the practicalities of this paradigm while making it accessible to the beginning and seasoned researcher ... Nicolini has done a fantastic job pulling together a great resource that I only wish was available while finishing my doctoral studies. It will enable others to learn and apply theoretically and methodically the delicate intricacies of practice theories in organization studies. I would suggest it to be a key reading for any individual interested in the social behaviour of actors or applying practice theories to their work. * David Schreiber, Management Learning *Nicolinis superb overview of practice theory offers original descriptions of different practice approaches and deftly sorts out this tangled theoretical terrain. The book innovates methodologically in illustrating the different approaches with the same case study, thereby nicely substantiating his thesis that empirical researchers best draw on practice theory by using different practice approaches in combination. The text is highly recommended to curious social scientists at large and not just to scholars of work and organization. * Theodore Schatzki, University of Kentucky *This book has all the marks of Davide Nicolini's scholarship: theoretical depth and empirical subtlety. Several speak or write about the relevance of practice theory for the study of organizations, but few attempt to creatively link practice theory to particular philosophical traditions and social theory at large, and work out its theoretical-cum-methodological implications for organization studies. Nicolini is one of those few. If you are looking for a single book to do both things for you, namely to provide a sophisticated guide to practice theory and show how to conduct empirical research from a practice theory perspective, this is the book to read. Nicolini does a masterful job: he tells us what practice theory is, where it comes from, and how to put it to work in organization studies. It is a brilliant achievement. * Haridimos Tsoukas, University of Cyprus and University of Warwick *Practice Theory, Work, and Organization is a major contribution to the resources available for scholars who want to understand or use practice theory. By providing clear discussions of the multiple strands of social theory underlying practice theory and utilizing these in his rolling case, Nicolini demystifies practice theory and illustrates its potential as a way of studying work and organizations. The final chapter provides a thoughtful discussion of a methodological approach involving zooming in and zooming out that Nicolini advocates as a way of engaging these multiple perspectives on studying practice. The books breadth makes it valuable both for newcomers to the field and for those who have been in this field for some time. * Martha S. Feldman, University of California, Irvine *Deep and broad, argumentative and pluralistic, theoretical and methodological, this is a landmark book. For the growing community of practice-orientated scholars in organization studies, Davide Nicolini provides the go-to resource. * Richard Whittington, Professor of Strategic Management at Saïd Business School and Millman Fellow in Management at New College, Oxford *Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press Reassembling the Social
Book SynopsisReassembling the Social is a fundamental challenge from one of the world''s leading social theorists to how we understand society and the ''social''. Bruno Latour''s contention is that the word ''social'', as used by Social Scientists, has become laden with assumptions to the point where it has become misnomer. When the adjective is applied to a phenomenon, it is used to indicate a stablilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that in due course may be used to account for another phenomenon. But Latour also finds the word used as if it described a type of material, in a comparable way to an adjective such as ''wooden'' or ''steely''. Rather than simply indicating what is already assembled together, it is now used in a way that makes assumptions about the nature of what is assembled. It has become a word that designates two distinct things: a process of assembling; and a type of material, distinct from others. Latour shows why ''the social'' cannot be thought of as a kind of material or domain, and disputes attempts to provide a ''social explanations'' of other states of affairs. While these attempts have been productive (and probably necessary) in the past, the very success of the social sciences mean that they are largely no longer so. At the present stage it is no longer possible to inspect the precise constituents entering the social domain. Latour returns to the original meaning of ''the social'' to redefine the notion, and allow it to trace connections again. It will then be possible to resume the traditional goal of the social sciences, but using more refined tools. Drawing on his extensive work examining the ''assemblages'' of nature, Latour finds it necessary to scrutinize thoroughly the exact content of what is assembled under the umbrella of Society. This approach, a ''sociology of associations'', has become known as Actor-Network-Theory, and this book is an essential introduction both for those seeking to understand Actor-Network Theory, or the ideas of one of its most influential proponents.Trade ReviewThis book makes ANT accessible and therefore a great resource for any student wishing to learn the language and ways of ANT. * Gabrielle Durepos18/02/2009 *Table of ContentsPART I: HOW TO DEPLOY CONTROVERSIES ABOUT THE SOCIAL WORLD; PART II: HOW TO RENDER ASSOCIATIONS TRACEABLE AGAIN

While these jerks stress us out in small ways throughout the day, they aren't technically breaking any rules, so we're expected just to put up with them....Until now. Tessa West has already helped thousands of people resolve their most pressing workplace issues. And here she draws on a decade of original research to profile classic workplace archetypes, including the Gaslighter, the Bulldozer, the Credit-Stealer, the Neglecter, and the Micromanager, giving advice to anyone who's ever hidden in the bathroom to cry at work. She digs deep into the inner workings of each bad apple, exploring their motivations and insecurities, and offers clever strategies for stopping each type of jerk in their tracks.Know a Jerk at Work? Triarchy Press Dancing at the Edge: Competence, Culture and
Book SynopsisIn his 1980 essay, The World of Tomorrow and the Person of Tomorrow, the psychologist Carl Rogers contemplated the future. He described those who would usher in this new era as people with the capacity to understand, bring about and absorb a paradigm shift. He added: "I have an uneasy feeling about this chapter... It is a beginning, an outline, a suggestion... I believe that what I am saying here will some day be fleshed out much more fully, either by me or someone else." Maureen O'Hara and Graham Leicester are uniquely qualified to flesh out Carl Rogers's vision (Maureen worked closely with Rogers for many years). Here they explore the competencies - the ways of being, doing, knowing and organising - that can help us navigate in complex and powerful times. They argue that these competencies are innate and within reach of all of us - given the right setting, plenty of practice and some gentle guidance. But they are seldom seen because they are routinely undervalued in today's culture. That must change, the authors insist, and this book is intended to begin that change. The book is based on the authors' extensive research and their practical experience observing the qualities demonstrated by some of today's most successful cultural, political and business leaders. They write of `persons of tomorrow' that they have witnessed: "We find that people who are thriving in the contemporary world, who give us the sense of having it all together and being able to act effectively and with good spirit in challenging circumstances, have some identifiable characteristics in common... They are the people already among us who inhabit the complex and messy problems of the 21st century in a more expansive way than their colleagues. They do not reduce such problems to the scale of the tools available to them, or hide behind those tools when they know they are partial and inadequate. They are less concerned with `doing the right thing' according to standard procedure than they are with really doing the right thing in the moment, in specific cases, with the individuals involved at the time. In a disciplined yet engaging way they are always pushing boundaries, including their own. They dance at the edge." Theodore Hesburgh, President Emeritus of Notre Dame University, once said that leadership demands certainty: "You cannot blow an uncertain trumpet." On the contrary, argue Leicester and O'Hara, we must all learn to play the uncertain trumpet like virtuosos. It is an image that conveys the subtle discipline required of the `person of tomorrow' - an artistry that, they argue, is essential to restore hope in the future.

This book from MIT Sloan Management Review avoids both these extremes, providing instead a clear-eyed look at how AI can complement (rather than eliminate) human jobs, with real-world examples from companies that range from Netflix to Walmart. The contributors show that organizations can create business value with AI by cooperating with it rather than relinquishing control to it. The smartest companies know that they don't need AI that mimics humans because they already have access to resources with human capability—actual humans. The book acknowledges the prominent role of such leading technology companies as Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google in applying AI to their busine

Cambridge University Press The Psychology of Innovation in Organizations
Book SynopsisIn today''s highly competitive market, organizations increasingly need to innovate in order to survive. Drawing on a wealth of psychological research in the field of creativity, David H. Cropley and Arthur J. Cropley illustrate practical methods for conceptualizing and managing organizational innovation. They present a dynamic model of the interactions between four key components of creativity - product, person, process, and press - which function as building blocks of innovation. This volume sheds new light on the nature of innovative products and the processes that generate them, the psychological characteristics of innovative people, and the environments that facilitate innovation. It also fills a significant gap in the current literature by addressing the paradoxical quality of organizational innovation, which may be both helped and hindered by the same factors. The authors demonstrate that with proper measurement and management, organizations can effectively encourage individuals to produce and take advantage of novel ideas.Trade Review'While the first part of this carefully researched and well-written book focuses on the basic building blocks of innovation, the second part shows in detailed yet practical terms how to measure aspects of your organization to marshal them for innovation. Logical and useful, this work provides resources for managers and educators alike. Great discussion of the paradoxes of innovation and good reviews of assessment measures set the stage for the introduction of the authors' comprehensive innovation assessment measure, the IPAI. Using a systems approach, these accomplished authors overcome the failures of previous methods by addressing each aspect in context, not as a static, isolated element of the process. Bravo!' Susan P. Besemer, PhD'[This book] provides a great review of the current research and theoretical developments in the field of creativity and innovation. It effectively integrates work from psychology and management as well as design and entrepreneurship. One important feature of the book, which distinguishes it from others, is that the authors discuss not only the various factors that can influence creativity, but also what tools can be used to measure these factors. Cropley and Cropley, however, go beyond just a summary of previous work. This makes this book not only an effective textbook for a class on creativity and innovation, but also a great book for researchers of creativity. They suggest that to understand creativity, we must adopt a system view that integrates all these components. While the system approach itself is not novel, the integration suggested by Cropley and Cropley is.' Roni Reiter-Palmon, PhD, University of Nebraska, Omaha'This engaging, incisive book first covers the basics of what any leader, consultant, or researcher needs to know about innovation and then offers specific and practical ways for implementing and nourishing it. This is required reading for anyone who wants to build or maintain the creativity within their organization.' James C. Kaufman, Neag School of Education, University of ConnecticutTable of Contents1. Cambridge University Press Management Tools
Book SynopsisNo organization is immune from the influence of management tools. Such tools as norms, indicators, ranking, evaluation grids and management control systems have moved outside the managerial and consultancy realm within which they were first developed to reach public administrations and policy-makers, as well as a range of other governmental and non-governmental organizations. Taking management tools out of the practical and utilitarian contexts to which they are often consigned and approaching them from a social analytical perspective, this book gives primacy to these everyday objects that constitute the background of organizational life and remain too often unquestioned. Bringing together developing streams of research from anthropology, political science, social psychology, sociology, accounting, organisation theory and management, Ève Chiapello and Patrick Gilbert offer an unprecedented theoretical synthesis that will help managers, scholars and policy-makers to unpack the functional and dysfunctional roles and effects of management tools within and across organizations.Trade Review'What are the tools that make it possible to manage? How do we make use of them, control them and to what effect? These are the fundamental questions that Chiapello and Gilbert address in a book that is as useful as it is fascinating. It is one that has much to teach not only scholars of management and organizations but also those want to think deeply about just what technology does.' Wendy Nelson Espeland, Northwestern University, Illinois'Organised along the distinction between different paradigms and based on illuminating empirical examples, this unique book comprehensively restores the theoretical, epistemological and methodological foundations of the diverse ways of knowing and inquiring on management tools and on tools of government.
