Nova Science Publishers Inc Focus on Lung Cancer Research
Book SynopsisLung cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world and a major cause of death. This new book brings together stellar research from around the world. The two main types of primary lung cancer small cell and non-small cell are examined. The book''s scope encompasses the three main types of non-small cell lung cancer: squamous cell carcinoma which is the commonest type of lung cancer and develops in the cells which line the airways; adenocarcinoma develops from the cells which produce mucus in the lining of the airways; large cell carcinoma gets its name from the large, rounded cells that are seen when they are examined under the microscope. About 1 in 5 lung cancers are small cell, the rest non-small cell. Causes of lung cancer are primarily smoking, but include as well exposure to radon, asbestos, uranium, arsenic, and certain petroleum products. Research and new drugs are appearing with increasing frequency in this field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Focus on Colorectal Cancer Research
Book SynopsisIn Western countries, cancer of the large intestine and rectum (colorectal cancer) is the second most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). The incidence of colorectal cancer begins to rise at age 40 and peaks between ages 60 and 75. Cancer of the large intestine (colon cancer) is more common in women; rectal cancer is more common in men. About 5 percent of the people with colon or rectal cancer have more than one cancer of the colorectum at the same time. People with a family history of colon cancer have a higher risk of developing the cancer themselves. A family history of familial polyposis or a similar disease also increases the risk of colon cancer. People with ulcerative colitis or Crohn''s disease have a higher risk of developing cancer. The risk is related to the person''s age when the condition developed and the length of time the person has had the condition. Diet plays some role in the risk of colon cancer, but exactly how it affects risk is unknown. Throughout the world, people at highest risk tend to live in cities and eat a diet typical of affluent Westerners. Such a diet is low in fibre and high in animal protein, fats, and refined carbohydrates such as sugar. Risk seems to be reduced by a diet high in calcium, vitamin D, and vegetables such as brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Trends in Bone Cancer Research
Book SynopsisPrimary bone tumours are tumours that start in the bone. In contrast, secondary bone cancer is where the cancer started in another part of the body but has then spread to the bones. The most common types of primary bone tumor are osteosarcoma and Ewing''s sarcoma, both of which are most frequently diagnosed in children and young adults. Other less common types of bone cancer include: Chondrosarcoma (a cancer arising in cartilage cells, usually found in adults between ages 50-75, though the less common mesenchymal-chondrosarcoma is more frequent in younger patients), Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of bone (MFH), Chondoma (a rare low grade malignancy occurring mostly between ages 30 -70), and other rare tumours. This new book brings together leading research from throughout the world in this important area of research.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Trends in Pancreatic Cancer Research
Book SynopsisCarcinoma of the pancreas has markedly increased in incidence over the past several decades, and now ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer death. Cancer of the pancreas is abnormal cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas which is a small organ (about six inches long) located next to the small intestine, behind the stomach. The pancreas has two main jobs in the body: to produce juices that help digest (break down) food and to produce hormones, such as insulin and glucagon, that help control blood sugar levels. Both of these hormones help the body use and store the energy it gets from food. The majority of pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinomas are tumours that arise from the exocrine portion of the pancreas. The exocrine portion of the pancrease produces digestive fluids. A small number of pancreatic cancers begin in the endocrine pancreas. The endocrine portion produces hormones (such as insulin). Despite the high mortality rate associated with pancreatic cancer, its aetiology is poorly understood, it is rarely curable and has an overall survival rate of less than 4%. Research on changing the survival rates of this stubborn disease is highlighted in this new book.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Focus on Thyroid Cancer Research
Book SynopsisThyroid cancer is cancer of the thyroid gland. These may be of many types including papillary, follicular, Hurthle cell (aka oxyphilic or oncocytic), or medullary cancers. Surgery plays an important role in treating these cancers. The thyroid concentrates iodine and so is extremely sensitive to the effects of various radioactive isotopes of iodine produced by nuclear fission. These radioactive isotopes increase the chances of developing cancer, though thyroid cancer can develop even without any exposure to radioactivity. Some evidence suggests that insufficient or excessive dietary iodine may also increase the risk for thyroid cancer. This new book presents the latest research in this field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Brain Cancer Therapy & Surgical Interventions
Book SynopsisThere are two types of brain tumours: primary brain tumours that originate in the brain and metastatic (secondary) brain tumours that originate from cancer cells that have migrated from other parts of the body. Primary brain cancer rarely spreads beyond the central nervous system, and death results from uncontrolled tumour growth within the limited space of the skull. Metastatic brain cancer indicates advanced disease and has a poor prognosis. Primary brain tumours can be cancerous or non-cancerous. Both types take up space in the brain and may cause serious symptoms (eg: vision or hearing loss) and complications (eg: stroke). All cancerous brain tumours are life threatening (malignant) because they have an aggressive and invasive nature. A non-cancerous primary brain tumour is life threatening when it compromises vital structures (eg: an artery). In the United States, the annual incidence of brain cancer generally is 15-20 cases per 100,000 people. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in patients younger than 35. This new book brings together the leading research in this dynamic area of research.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Skin Cancer Research
Book SynopsisThree types of skin cancer account for nearly 100% of all diagnosed cases. Each of these three cancers begins in a different type of cell within the skin, and each cancer is named for the type of cell in which it begins. Skin cancers are divided into one of two classes -- non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. The different types of skin cancer are: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC); Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); Melanoma. All other skin cancers combined account for less than 1% of diagnosed cases. These are classified as non-melanoma skin cancers and include Merkel cell carcinoma, dermatofibromasarcoma protuberans, Paget''s disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. This book examines the latest research in this field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc New Research on Cutaneous Lymphomas
Book SynopsisCutaneous lymphoid infiltrates which are suspicious for lymphoma, are always important challenges for the general pathologist who faces them occasionally. Many times they are also difficult even for the dermatopathologist, and the most modern diagnostic weapons sometimes play a crucial role in the differential diagnosis with other non-malignant entities, as well as between the different types of lymphomas. Clinically, they sometimes simulate many other conditions, and are not always easy to be recognise by the dermatologist. In 2005, a new classification of cutaneous lymphomas was published, in an attempt to achieve a better comprehension of the nature and behaviour of these tumours. Nevertheless, many new aspects of pathogenesis, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, are constantly appearing in medical literature. This current book is an attempt to present to the reader, the field of cutaneous lymphomas in a way that can be useful in daily practice, either as a general surgical pathologist, a dermatologist, or a dermatopathologist. At the same time, the reader will find updated information which will probably be very helpful in order to face confidently most of the difficult clinical and histopathologic cases. The book goes through most of the cutaneous lymphomas in systematic order, either B-cell, T-cell, or Hodgkin type, presenting the clinical, and morphological aspects, which include many of the most recent molecular contributions. Many of the chapters also provide a therapeutic approach.

Book SynopsisNeuroblastoma is a cancer that develops from nerve cells found in several areas of the body. Neuroblastoma most commonly affects children age 5 or younger, though it may rarely occur in older children and adults. Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer in babies. Neuroblastoma develops in tissue that makes up the sympathetic nervous system -- the system of nerves that automatically regulates your heart rate, blood pressure and digestion. Neuroblastoma most commonly arises in and around the adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys. However, Neuroblastoma can also develop in other areas of the abdomen and in the chest, neck and pelvis. This book presents important research in this field of research.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Experimental Leukemia: History, Biology &
Book SynopsisThe world of experimental leukaemia research is a miniature of cancer research. Cancer research started from experimental leukaemia/sarcoma research of Ellermann and Bang and Peyton Rous in early 1900s. Experimental leukaemia includes most of important elements of cancer research; both viral and chemical carcinogenesis; most of important oncogenes and suppresser genes and the related cell biology. The author has added only a few sections such as skin carcinogenesis done by Yamagiwa and Berenblum and DNA viruses from outside of experimental leukaemia. By doing this, this book covers most of important topics of modern oncology, except researches done on human cancers. In this book, the author has arranged the chapters to contrast the pioneer works by Peyton Rous, Jacob Furth, and Ludwik Gross, etc, done more than half a century ago and the recent works by molecular biologists. Although the former pathologists provided various experimental materials, faced to severe criticism by contemporary researchers and they had tough hearts to cope with them, molecular biologists solved questions on these materials step by step by disclosing the invisible molecular events as a visible charts, molecular diagrams, or 3-D models just as magicians do. Experimental leukaemia has always afforded the key materials for solution of cancer. In experimental leukaemia, mutations and genetic recombination play an important role. They include ras gene mutations, insertional mutagenesis and gene transduction by retroviruses, recombination among retroviruses, and chromosome translocations. Most of them occur in highly specific genomic sites. However, the reason for the specificity in target sites remained obscure. The author was especially interested in the common target genomic sites for chemical carcinogens and retroviruses. Therefore the common pathway for retroviruses and chemicals became one of the main topics of this book.

Nova Science Publishers Inc New Developments in Metastasis Suppressor
Book SynopsisThe spread of cancer cells from their organ of origin to distant tissues is called metastasis. Cancer metastasis is the main cause of death from cancer, and in many cases is difficult to detect or treat. The process by which tumour cells become metastatic is complex and involves many stages, including detachment of cells from the main tumour mass, degradation of the surrounding extra-cellular matrix, invasion into nearby blood vessels, travel and survival through the circulatory system, attachment to a vessel wall, extra-vasation, degradation of the extra-cellular matrix into a distant tissue/organ, and the development of a novel blood supply. In order to accomplish this process, the cells acquire characteristics which are important for each stage. Recently, a class of genes known as metastasis suppressors'' has been the subject of intense investigation. For some metastasis suppressor genes, there is strong evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies to demonstrate key roles in the metastatic process, for others data is much more limited, and their importance uncertain. In this book, chapters are devoted to providing up-to-date summaries of our understanding of individual metastasis suppressor genes. Each is written by a leading authority in the study of that gene. Topics covered include discussions on how each metastasis suppressor was discovered, the mechanisms underlying their loss of expression in tumours and tumour cell lines, their proposed molecular functions, and the consequences to a tumour cell of the loss of this function. This compilation aims to provide, in a single volume, comprehensive information that will be valuable to all scientists working in cancer research, to students needing to understand molecular events that regulate tumour progression and the acquisition of metastasis, and to clinicians who might wish to know more of the roles of potentially new markers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Tumorigenesis Research Advances
Book SynopsisTumourigenesis is the formation of tumours in the body, often caused by oncogenes. These tumours are the result of uncontrollable reproduction (cell division) due to alterations in the cell''s genetic code, creating lesions in the tissue where they reside. Tumourigenesis can be divided into tumour initiation, promotion and progression. Oncogenomics often studies tumours caused by such a condition in hope of pinpointing genes -- pieces of genetic information -- that are susceptible to being changed (mutated) by external factors like ultraviolet light, toxic chemicals, and other carcinogens. The range of normal genetic alterations that a person''s DNA undergoes over time is extraordinarily large, so it is hard to detect exactly what cause tumourigenesis. This book presents the latest research advances in the field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Cancer Drug Resistance Research
Book SynopsisOne of the main causes of failure in the treatment of cancer is the development of drug resistance by the cancer cells. The design of cancer chemotherapy has become increasingly sophisticated, yet there is no cancer treatment that is 100% effective against disseminated cancer. Resistance to treatment with anticancer drugs results from a variety of factors including individual variations in patients and somatic cell genetic differences in tumours, even those from the same tissue of origin. Frequently resistance is intrinsic to the cancer, but as therapy becomes more and more effective, acquired resistance has also become common. The most common reason for acquisition of resistance to a broad range of anticancer drugs is expression of one or more energy-dependent transporters that detect and eject anti-cancer drugs from cells, but other mechanisms of resistance including insensitivity to drug-induced apoptosis and induction of drug-detoxifying mechanisms probably play an important role in acquired anticancer drug resistance. Studies on mechanisms of cancer drug resistance have yielded important information on how to circumvent this resistance to improve cancer chemotherapy and have implications for pharmacokinetics of many commonly used drugs.

Nova Science Publishers Inc New Gene Therapy & Cancer Research
Book SynopsisGenes, which are carried on chromosomes, are the basic physical and functional units of heredity. Genes are specific sequences of bases that encode instructions on how to make proteins. Although genes get a lot of attention, it''s the proteins that perform most life functions and even make up the majority of cellular structures. When genes are altered so that the encoded proteins are unable to carry out their normal functions, genetic disorders can result. Gene therapy is an experimental treatment that involves introducing genetic material into a person''s cells to fight disease. Gene therapy is being studied in clinical trials for many different types of cancer and for numerous other diseases. This book offers important research from around the globe dedicated to this dynamic subject.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Free Radicals Effect on Cytostatica, Vitamins,
Book SynopsisThe subject of matter of this book presents an interface between radiation biology and medicine and concerns knowledge and experiences obtained mostly in the last two decades in the field. The data are based on the chemical and biological effects induced by high-energy radiation in aqueous systems of vitamins and cytostatica as well as mixtures of both. The reducing and oxidising free radicals in the human organism are governing the various biological processes. They can also be produced by ionising radiation in each desired kind, a concentration in aqueous systems. Based on this fact, it is possible to perform appropriate studies in order to gain a deeper insight in the very complicated and fast biological processes. The purpose of this is to present, for the first time in a book, a critical scientific overview of the published radiation-induced antitumour-effects of vitamins and related substance as an anti-tumour agent.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Cancer & Stem Cells
Book SynopsisToday, cancer is the second most prevalent cause of death, after heart disease, in the industrialised world. Till now, and despite promising results in cancer research, the primary cause of death in cancer is still 1: the formation of metastases at distant organs sites, 2: the presence of cancer cells that are resistant to current cancer therapies (chemotherapy/radiation) and which cause cancer relapse. Within the past three years it became evident that also solid tumour tissues contain a kind of stem cells, so called cancer cells. These cancer stem cells have been described as chemo-radiation therapy resistant tumour initiating cells. The purpose of this book is to summarise the latest findings about the role of stem cells in cancer.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Cancer Prevention Research Compendium: Volume 2
Book SynopsisThis book brings together new and important research on cancer prevention. Much of the promise for cancer prevention comes from observational epidemiologic studies that show associations between modifiable lifestyle factors or environmental exposures and specific cancers. Evidence is now emerging from randomised controlled trials designed to test whether interventions suggested by the epidemiologic studies, as well as leads based on laboratory research, result in reduced cancer incidence and mortality. The most consistent finding, over decades of research is the strong association between tobacco use and cancers of many sites. Hundreds of epidemiologic studies have confirmed this association. Further support comes from the fact that lung cancer death rates in the United States have mirrored smoking patterns with increases in smoking followed by dramatic increases in lung cancer death rates, and more recently decreases in smoking followed by decreases in lung cancer death rates in men. Infections may also be associated with cancer development. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a necessary event for subsequent cervix cancer, and vaccine-conferred immunity results in a marked decrease in precancerous lesions. Likewise, Epstein-Barr virus has been associated with Burkitt lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori with gastric cancer, although specific anti-infective interventions have not yet proven effective in preventing these cancers. Additional examples of modifiable cancer risk factors include alcohol consumption (associated with increased risk of oral, oesophageal, breast, and other cancers), physical inactivity (associated with increased risk of colon, breast, and possibly other cancers), and obesity (associated with colon, breast, endometrial, and possibly other cancers). Observational evidence shows associations between alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and obesity and increased incidence of certain cancers. More research is needed to determine whether these associations are causal and whether avoiding these behaviours would actually reduce cancer incidence. Other lifestyle and environmental factors known to affect cancer risk (either beneficially or detrimentally) include certain sexual and reproductive practices, the use of exogenous estrogens, exposure to ionising radiation and ultraviolet radiation, certain occupational and chemical exposures, and infectious agents. Food and nutrient intake have been and are being examined in relation to many types of cancer.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Estrogen Versus Cancer
Book SynopsisOral Cancer is a neoplasm with a fairly large male to female ration in most populations. Moreover, it develops in older age in females in comparison with males, and the ration of non-smokers, non-drinkers among elderly female oral cancer cases if suprisingly high. The conspicuously lower incidence of this tumour among women than men is suggestive of certain endocrine involvement in its development. There are no available literary data as yet which would give an explanation to this gender specific incidence of oral cancer. Oral cancer is a multicasual disease and there are thorough interrelationships among the etiologic factors. Till now, exogenous harmful noxae (tobacco, alcohol comsumption and energy rich diet) were overemphasised in its epidemology. However, these exogenous factors have not only local carcinogenic effect in the oral cavity, but also induce systemtic changes by means of metabolic and hormonal pathways. With full knowledge of these correlations, isolated investigations of exogenous risk factors may be misleading. This book containing the author''s results on oral cancer raises a new concept concerning tumour initiation. Not oestrogen, but its deficiency may provoke malignant transformation. This new theory may explain many controversial literary data concerning the associations of female sexual steroids and malignancies.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Rectal Cancer: Etiology, Pathogenesis & Treatment
Book SynopsisCurrent controversies about rectal cancer treatment are examined and discussed in this book. In particular, oncologic outcomes, which claim an aggressive approach over the primary tumour, lymph nodes and distant metastasis. Also, the functional outcome, whose important objective is to preserve the anal sphincter and the preservation of the pelvic nervous plexus. Radical resection with total mesorectal excision is the mainstay of rectal cancer treatment. However, it is associated with significant surgical morbidity/mortality, possible stoma surgery/complications and long-term gastrointestinal dysfunction with deterioration in quality of life. This book also explores the risk factors of local recurrence after curative resection in patients with middle and lower rectal carcinoma. The relationships between mesorectal metastasis and local recurrence and the possible correlations between circumferential resection margin status and local recurrence were identified. The relationships between local recurrence and clinicopathologic characteristics of middle and lower rectal carcinoma were also evaluated.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Anticancer Drugs: Design, Delivery & Pharmacology
Book SynopsisThis book describes several ways to improve drug localisation and to increase anti-tumour efficacy, such as through drug modifications and through the development of anti-tumour drug delivery systems. Anticancer drugs have little or no specificity, resulting in low tumour concentrations, systemic toxicity and severe side effects. The pharmacological inhibitors of Hsp90, a major cytosolic chaperone, are examined in this book since they are often used in anticancer therapy. Furthermore, polyphenols, an anti-cancer agent which constitutes the most abundant group of antioxidants of normal human food, is discussed as well. Polyphenols protect against oxidative stress and their associated pathologies include inflammation, cancer and coronary heart diseases. Thus, they play an important role as an anticancer agent. Finally, metal-based antitumor drugs, which play an essential role in clinics today, are reviewed. In particular, ruthenium compounds as promising alternatives to platinum-based anticancer drugs.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Molecular Therapy of Breast Cancer: Classicism
Book SynopsisBreast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer and a second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. Despite their proven efficacy, classical therapies are, however, unable to cure metastatic breast cancer and are often associated with significant toxicity and side-effects, due to a wide spectrum of action. During the last years, our increasing knowledge of the molecular pathways underlying cancer development has led to the introduction of new drugs, of which most are directed towards very specific targets. Rather than to be used as single agents, these "modern" compounds could ultimately be combined with classical molecules. Here are described nearly 150 drugs that are currently used in routine therapy or are in clinical trials in breast cancer patients. From the classical tamoxifen, fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, epirubin, docetaxel, paclitaxel..., to the more recently introduced ixabepilone, lapatinib, vorinostat, everolimus, bevacizumab..., they also include capecitabine, gemcitabine, trastuzumab, bevacizumab, fulvestrant, aromatase inhibitors, cancer vaccines, inhibitors of tumour-induced osteolysis, insulin-like growth factor-I receptor inhibitors, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 inhibitors, and many others. This book offers an insight into current developments of breast cancer therapy, when classicism meets modernity.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Aromatase Inhibitors: Types, Mode of Action &
Book SynopsisAromatase inhibitors (AI) are a class of drugs used in the treatment of breast cancer and ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women. Aromatase is an enzyme that synthesises oestrogen and aromatase inhibitors block the synthesis of oestrogen, which is needed in some cancers to grow. As breast tissue is stimulated by estrogens, decreasing their production is a way of suppressing recurrence of the breast tumour tissue. In contrast to pre-menopausal women, in whom most of the oestrogen is produced in the ovaries, in post-menopausal women most of the body''s oestrogen is produced in the adrenal gland from the conversion of androgens. Investigations are ongoing to look for other applications and researchers continue to study aromatase inhibitors as a way to stimulate ovulation or suppress oestrogen production in endometriosis. This book presents the latest research from around the world in this dynamic field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Multiple Myeloma: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment
Book SynopsisMultiple myeloma (also known as myeloma or plasma cell myeloma) is a progressive hematologic disease. It is a cancer of the plasma cell, an important part of the immune system that produces immunoglobulins (antibodies) to help fight infection and disease. Multiple myeloma is characterised by excessive numbers of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and overproduction of intact monoclonal immunoglobulin or Bence-Jones protein. Hypercalcemia, anaemia, renal damage, increased susceptibility to bacterial infection, and impaired production of normal immunoglobulin are common clinical manifestations of multiple myeloma. It is often also characterised by diffuse osteoporosis, usually in the pelvis, spine, ribs, and skull. This new book gathers the latest research from around the globe on multiple myeloma research and related topics such as immune defects in multiple myeloma, surgical options in the treatment of spinal myeloma, the role of PBSC in multiple myeloma and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Book SynopsisBreast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. While the majority of new breast cancers are diagnosed as a result of an abnormality seen on a mammogram, a lump or change in consistency of the breast tissue can also be a warning sign of the disease. Heightened awareness of breast cancer risk in the past decades has led to an increase in the number of women undergoing mammography for screening, leading to detection of cancers in earlier stages and a resultant improvement in survival rates. Still, breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 45 and 55.This book presents the latest research in the field.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Wait Times in the Management of Early State
Book SynopsisThis book reviews the world literature on elapsed times in the management of early breast cancer, with a particular focus on an amazingly wide variety of Canadian studies assessing elapsed times. This book presents and discusses a new technique called the "multi-interval, multi-resolution analytic framework", which examines the relationship among all care intervals in relation to predictors of longer relapse times along the care path. Most strikingly this technique shows that elapsed times in general have increased over the last five to ten years, probably related to legitimately increased indications for radiation, chemotherapy and biologic therapies
