Book Synopsis"Read this important book to learn how cancer is an environmental, metabolic disease with many small causes that stack up—and what you can do to prevent or even reverse it."—Dave Asprey, New York Times bestselling author of The Bulletproof Diet The Optimal Terrain Ten Protocol to Reboot Cellular Health! The Metabolic Approach to Cancer offers an innovative, metabolic-focused nutrition protocol that works. Naturopathic, integrative oncologist and cancer survivor Dr. Nasha Winters and nutrition therapist Jess Higgins Kelley have identified the ten key elements of a person’s “terrain” (think of it as a topographical map of our body) that are crucial to preventing and managing cancer. Each of the terrain ten elements—including epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balance—is illuminated as it relates to the cancer process, then given a heavily researched and tested, non-toxic and metabolic, focused nutrition prescription. The ketogenic diet—which relies on the body’s production of ketones as fuel—is the centerpiece of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Further, Winters and Kelley explain how to harness the anticancer potential of phytonutrients abundant in low-glycemic plant and animal foods to address the 10 hallmarks of cancer—an approach Western medicine does with drug-based therapies. The optimized, genetically-tuned diet shuns: Grains Legumes Sugar Genetically modified foods Pesticides Synthetic ingredients The optimized, genetically-tuned diet emphasizes: Whole, wild foods Local Organic Ferments Heirloom Low-glycemic Other components of their approach include harm-reductive herbal therapies like mistletoe (considered the original immunotherapy and common in European cancer care centers) and cannabinoids (which shrink tumors and increase quality of life, yet are illegal in more than half of the United States). Through addressing the ten root causes of cancer and approaching the disease from a nutrition-focused standpoint, we can slow cancer’s endemic spread and live optimized lives. "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a powerhouse of detailed information on how to prevent, manage, and treat cancer. . . . It is written in an intimate conversation style that comes from decades of deep personal experience, research, and genuine passion."—Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping over the TruthTrade Review“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer explains why medicine has failed to find a single cure for cancer. Read this important book to learn how cancer is an environmental, metabolic disease with many small causes that stack up and what you can do to prevent or even reverse it. Taking control of your environment and your food gives you control over cancer! You’ll never look at sugar the same way again.”—Dave Asprey, New York Times bestselling author of The Bulletproof Diet; creator, Bulletproof Coffee“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a powerhouse of detailed information on how to prevent, manage, and treat cancer. How refreshing to see such a compilation of insight, structure, and sweeping scope, one that centers on the health of the entire individual, not just killing cancer cells alone. It is written in an intimate conversation style that comes from decades of deep personal experience, research, and genuine passion. It’s time to welcome a new gem to the universe of books on cancer.”—Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping over the Truth“Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley have written an important book, The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, that can help cancer patients better manage their disease. Most cancers, regardless of cell or tissue origin, are now recognized as a single metabolic disease that feeds on fermentable fuels like the sugar glucose and the amino acid glutamine. Winters and Kelley provide cancer patients with logical, nontoxic, therapeutic strategies for starving cancer cells of their prime fuels while enhancing overall patient health. This book will be a valuable resource for all cancer patients and their oncologists.”—Thomas N. Seyfried, PhD, author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is the book I have been yearning for since my cancer diagnosis in 1989. I have been managing my cancer with nutrition and lifestyle, but my research has led to confusing and sometimes contradictory information. This book has everything I need to know in one place. I feel empowered with knowledge about what I can do and why it will make a difference. I want everyone touched by cancer to read this book.”—Jan Adrian, MSW, founder and director, Healing Journeys“In The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley take the adage ‘knowledge is power’ to a new level. The book is packed with science-backed, practical, and highly relevant information that could easily overwhelm the reader. But rest assured, in a very caring way the two authors make sure you learn how to set priorities, address the main areas of concern first, and make step-by-step improvements to your well-being. This book has the power to truly transform your health!”—Patricia Daly, author of The Ketogenic Kitchen“The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a terrific resource for anyone interested in treating cancer with natural therapies. This book is delightful and full of valuable information.”—Ann Fonfa, president, Annie Appleseed Project“In The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, Dr. Nasha Winters and nutritionist Jess Higgins Kelley expose the inadequacies inherent in the entrenched model of conventional cancer care. Looking beyond the manifestations of a body out of balance, they open the reader’s eyes to the underlying epigenetic changes that contribute to the development and progression of this devastating disease. Also included here is a set of tools—including nutrition, lifestyle, and metabolic therapies—that address the root cause of the problem. This integrated approach offers an opportunity to bring body and mind back into balance."—Miriam Kalamian, author of Keto for Cancer

Book Synopsis"Keto for Cancer brings clarity to this emerging science and makes implementation of this information straightforward and uncomplicated."—David Perlmutter, New York Times bestselling author "This book addresses every question or concern that cancer patients might have in using a ketogenic metabolic strategy for managing their cancer.”—Thomas Seyfried ,PhD THE comprehensive guide for patients and practitioners from a foremost authority in the emerging field of metabolic therapies for cancer. Although evidence supporting the benefits of ketogenic diet therapies continues to mount, there is little to guide those who wish to adopt this diet as a metabolic therapy for cancer. Keto for Cancer fills this need. Nutritionist Miriam Kalamian has written the book to lay out comprehensive guidelines that specifically address the many challenges associated with cancer, and particularly the deep nutritional overhaul involved with the ketogenic diet. Kalamian, a leading voice in the keto movement, is driven by passion from her own experience in using the ketogenic diet for her young son. Her book addresses the nuts and bolts of adopting the diet, from deciding whether keto is the right choice to developing a personal plan for smoothly navigating the keto lifestyle. It is invaluable for both beginners and seasoned users of the ketogenic diet, as well as for health-care professionals who need a toolkit to implement this targeted metabolic therapy. The book guides readers to a deeper understanding of the therapeutic potential of the ketogenic diet—which extends well beyond simply starving cancer—emphasizing the powerful impact the diet has on the metabolism of cancer cells. Nutritional nuances and meal templates and tracking tools are explored in sections such as: Fasting Protocols Know What’s in the Foods You Eat Preparing Keto Meals Put Your Plan Into Action Kalamian also discusses important issues such as self-advocacy empowering readers by offering tips on how to critically examine cancer-care options and then incorporate what resonates into a truly personalized treatment plan. Trade ReviewBooklist- “Starve a cancer cell? Indeed. Kalamian, a nutritionist and educator whose 13-year-old son died of brain cancer, argues that research efforts focus too much on genetics and drugs and not enough on the environment and diet. Tumor cells seem to feed on glucose, so she argues that it makes sense to try a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet. With his introduction, biology professor Thomas Seyfried adds credibility to what he calls a ‘playbook' for patients and caregivers who would like to try incorporating 'therapeutic ketosis' into their standard-of-care oncology treatment. In her how-to guide, Kalamian covers meal planning (many fats are friends), fasting (mostly good), calorie restriction (just don’t go overboard), chemo and radiation (the weight loss they often cause might drive some of the early response to treatment), side effects (an increased risk of kidney stones), and long-term benefits of the keto diet (improved blood pressure, more energy). Though she is an unapologetic advocate, Kalamian does advise readers not to force a loved one to embrace this nutritional therapy.”“Keto for Cancer is an incredible guide for cancer patients and anyone attempting the ketogenic diet for the metabolic management of disease or just overall health benefits. This book addresses at least 95 percent of the questions I get on a daily basis. A must-read resource for anyone interested in ketogenic diets, cancer, exogenous ketones, and personalizing their nutritional ketosis strategy.”—Dominic D’Agostino, PhD, leading scientist on ketogenic metabolic therapies “In an era when interest in ketogenic diets has erupted and misinformation abounds, Miriam Kalamian has brilliantly cut to the facts for cancer patients and their caregivers. Keto for Cancer is a clear, concise, and invaluable resource that describes both the science and implementation of these metabolic therapies. Underlying it all is the heart of a mom who has experienced the ultimate tragedy and has chosen to give additional meaning to her son, Raffi’s, life.”—Jim Abrahams, The Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Therapies “Keto for Cancer reveals how a ketogenic diet powerfully targets cancer at its metabolic core. This approach to cancer therapy, and prevention, offers up a welcomed perspective in a world focused on waging war on cancer with medical weapons of mass destruction. Miriam Kalamian’s exemplary achievement brings clarity to this emerging science and makes implementation of this information straightforward and uncomplicated.”—David Perlmutter, FACN, author of #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain and The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan“Standard treatments for Miriam Kalamian’s son Raffi’s brain tumor failed and crippled his quality of life, so she went to graduate school to learn all she could about metabolic nutritional therapies. Keto for Cancer is comprehensive and has appropriate cautions about the limits of the approach. It’s a complete how-to book for others in this terrible position and is imprinted with her love for her son.”—Eugene J. Fine, MD, professor of clinical radiology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine“Cancer is the word nobody ever wants to hear, but Miriam Kalamian understands it’s not an automatic death sentence either. Keto for Cancer offers hope for healing to cancer patients by offering them a personal plan for success that implements the powerful symbiosis of natural strategies such as the ketogenic diet, fasting, and supplementation. It’s time to live the anticancer life!"—Jimmy Moore, health podcaster; international bestselling author of Keto Clarity“The nutrition and medical world is incredibly blessed that Miriam Kalamian has decided to generously share her in-depth knowledge, but most importantly her vast clinical experience and skills, in this book. I’m confident that it will become the go-to resource for the practical application of the ketogenic approach. Keto for Cancer will undoubtedly pave the way for improved health in many chronically ill patients.”—Patricia Daly, coauthor of The Ketogenic Kitchen“This iconoclastic guide to the ketogenic diet for cancer epitomizes ‘personalized medicine’ and offers a well-researched yet easy-to-understand approach to the science underpinning the metabolic foundations of cancer. A must-read, not only as stepwise guide for patients but for all physicians, particularly those skeptical of the therapeutic benefits of the ketogenic diet.”—Joseph C. Maroon, MD, clinical professor of neurosurgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center“Miriam Kalamian has written an excellent and complete guide to ketogenic therapy in cancer treatment. Both experienced and laypersons can learn a lot from this book, which nicely explains the relationships between calorie restriction, ketogenic diets, and fasting and provides practical information on how to best start an individualized dietary treatment plan. I especially recommend this book to patients and their relatives, but it has also become a valuable reference for my own clinical work with patients.”—Dr. Rainer J. Klement, PhD, Department of Radiation Oncology, Leopoldina Hospital Schweinfurt, Germany“I have gotten to know Miriam personally and professionally over the years. Her dedication, work ethic, passion, integrity, and unwavering demand for sound, empirical research is unmatched. Keto for Cancer is a remarkable resource for cancer patients; beautifully written, easy to follow, and incredibly well researched—a true gift to the oncology community.”—Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping Over the Truth“Miriam Kalamian’s Keto for Cancer provides the most comprehensive and organized step-by-step information to easily understand and efficiently implement a lifesaving ketogenic diet. Using rigorous scientific evidence-based rationale, Kalamian explains why a ketogenic diet is crucial for anticancer management. In this extraordinary book, she shares her deep expertise in the science of cancer metabolism with her profoundly compassionate empathy and loving kindness to accomplish a landmark in this field. The book is an academic, scientific primer for clinicians (who will greatly benefit from the lucid, crisp explanations), as well as a detailed, easy-to-follow manual for patients and their families to carry out their daily anticancer ketogenic diets. This diligent, gifted work gives real life and authentic hope to its readers in a unique tour de force which will remain a landmark for generations.”—J. William (Will) LaValley, MD, Molecular Integrative Oncology“Cancer nutrition expert Miriam Kalamian has poured every ounce of her hard-earned wisdom, deep scientific knowledge, and compassion into Keto for Cancer. Within this masterful guide, she explains how ketogenic diets limit tumor cell access to key nutrients while nourishing healthy cells, quieting inflammation, and improving quality of life. Let Kalamian empower you to take aim at cancer’s soft underbelly and begin reclaiming your health.”—Georgia Ede, MD, Psychiatrist and Nutrition Specialist “I had the pleasure of first meeting Miriam at a conference in Berkeley a few years back, she was speaking on a panel about the ketogenic diet and cancer. Her story touched me deeply as did her articulate way of expressing how to implement a ketogenic diet. I was actively searching for a good resource for cancer patients as all that was available back then was directed to epilepsy and the fitness world. She was gracious enough to share with me a coveted, paper copy of her ebook, Getting Started With a Ketogenic Diet. I presented it a week later to a group of clients at a cancer retreat in northern California and started a snowball effect of finally finding a community to talk to about the ketogenic diet and cancer. Since then, I have watched Miriam reach superstardom with her brilliant mind and compassionate heart. This book is a culmination of what she has learned, shared, gleaned from others, and inspired in the world of both bench (her collaborations with world renowned researchers) and bedside (real-life application by respected clinicians) medicine. This is the most thorough discussion on ketogenic diet and cancer in the industry and I expect it to continue to inspire change in how we approach cancer today.”—Nasha Winters, ND, coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer

Book SynopsisThe story of the search for p53--the most important gene in medicine. All of us have lurking in our DNA a most remarkable gene: it is known simply as p53 and its job is to protect us from cancer. p53: The Gene that Cracked the Cancer Code tells the story of the discovery of the gene and of medical science''s mission to unravel its mysteries and get to the heart of what happens in our cells when they turn cancerous. When all is well, this gene constantly scans our cells to ensure that when they grow and divide as part of the routine maintenance of our bodies, they do so without mishap. If a cell makes a mistake in copying its DNA during the process of division, p53 stops it in its tracks, sending in the repair team before allowing the cell to carry on dividing. Cancer cannot develop unless p53 itself is damaged or handicapped by some other fault in the system. Not surprisingly, p53 is the most studied single gene in history. Hammersmith Health Books Get Your Oomph Back: A guide to exercise after a

Book SynopsisThere is extremely compelling evidence to suggest that if people are physically active before, during and after cancer treatment, their outcomes are likely to be better. Their risk of recurrence (and death) is lower and their ability to deal with the myriad side effects is improved significantly. Increasingly people with cancer understand this but they are often unsure of what exercise would be best, what is safest, what would be most effective and what to avoid. This book offers very practical, targeted information to enable people to exercise in whatever way they feel ready for. It provides guidance on effective and appropriate exercise for anybody who has received a diagnosis of cancer, including those receiving active treatment and those living with incurable cancer of all types, with the emphasis on the proven benefits of exercise and activity.Trade ReviewReviewed by a patient, on behalf of The Breast Centre, Cardiff and Vale UHB: This book is accessible from the minute you pick it up – its cover, clear layout and excellent indexing encourage you to open it and investigate further. In the introduction, you will discover that the author, Carolyn Garritt, is extremely well qualified to talk on the subject of exercise both professionally and personally. This book is very credible. The topics covered are wide ranging, from overcoming barriers to exercise after cancer, to practical advice on when and how much to exercise and I found the depth of detail appropriate for a book of this sort. Carolyn includes sufficient information to back up her recommendations and suggestions but not so much as to distract from the key message or to overwhelm. There are comprehensive references for further reading for those that require, as well as a useful appendix of national and regional cancer support organisations. The tone of the book is practical, encouraging and positive and the case studies add a personal angle, showing the difference that exercise can make to individuals. All the exercises suggested in the book are accompanied by clear photographs. I found the information on exercise as prehab as well as in treatment and prevention of lymphoedema particularly interesting. In conclusion I highly recommend this book for anyone who is at any point on the cancer journey. You will find something useful for your particular situation.Table of ContentsSection 1 Why: Reasons why exercising can help, with the latest evidence for each.; Cancer-related fatigue; Managing mental health, depression and anxiety. Book SynopsisOn the night of December 2, 1943, the Luftwaffe bombed a critical Allied port in Bari, Italy, sinking seventeen ships and killing over a thousand servicemen and hundreds of civilians. Caught in the surprise air raid was the John Harvey,an American Liberty ship carrying a top-secret cargo of 2,000 mustard bombs to be used in retaliation if the Germans resorted to gas warfare. After young sailors began suddenly dying with mysterious symptoms, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Alexander, a doctor and chemical weapons expert, was dispatched to investigate. He quickly diagnosed mustard gas exposure, which Churchill denied. Undaunted, Alexander defied British officials and persevered with his investigation. His final report on the Bari casualties was immediately classified, but not before his breakthrough observations about the toxic effects of mustard on white blood cells caught the attention of Colonel Cornelius P. Rhoads - a pioneering physician and research scientist as brilliant as he was arrogant and self-destructive - who recognized that the poison was both a killer and a cure, and ushered in a new era of cancer research.Deeply researched and beautifully written, The Great Secret is the remarkable story of how horrific tragedy gave birth to medical triumph.Trade ReviewIn a history that reads like a novel, Conant connects the 1943 bombing by the Nazis of an American ship containing banned mustard gas to the development of chemotherapy as a cancer treatment. * Editors’ Choice, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW *[A] compelling narrative. . . . fascinating. * Wall Street Journal *Engrossing. . . . Convey[s] a fast-paced medical detective story that demonstrates how careful scientific observation can yield unexpected benefits and serves as a reminder of the difficult choices made by governments to balance public health and secrecy in matters of security. * Science *Conant delights in the devilish details, the hidden, overlooked, and deeply personal stories that constitute our collective historical record. In her deft and experienced hands, readers will discover great delight as well. * Air Mail *With a keen understanding of medical science, cancer, and the history of World War II, as well as an amazing range of sources, Conant dramatically illuminates a dark moment in history that eventually led to the medical breakthrough of chemotherapy. * National Book Review (US) *[A] fast-paced history-cum-detective story * Bloomberg News *the gripping story of a chemical weapons catastrophe, its cover-up, and how one army doctor's discovery led to the development of chemotherapy * Daily Times *the book succeeds as a history of chemotherapy's origins * Nature *Jennet Conant unravels the remarkable story of a World War Two chemical weapons disaster which inspired one of the twentieth century's greatest breakthroughs in medicine with verve and precision. The Great Secret reads like a wartime adventure and political thriller combined. -- Wendy Moore, author of ENDELL STREETWith a scintillating detective-tale plot rendered with an accomplished novelist's flair, Jennet Conant peels back the layers of deception employed by Allied authorities-including Winston Churchill-to conceal the fact that many of those who died at the Bari disaster in December 1943 perished from unprecedented exposure to mustard gas and immersion in ship fuel oil. This fast-paced narrative alone would make The Great Secret a landmark work, but Conant surpasses this with the even more astonishing chronicle of how insights into the Bari deaths ultimately galvanized the creation of the whole field of cancer chemotherapy. This is a heartbreaking and inspiring tale of tragedy leading to triumph. -- Richard B. Frank, author of TOWER OF SKULLS: A History of the Asia-Pacific War, July 1937–May 1942A ripping good yarn, jam-packed with marvelous prose, wonderful historical characters, and superb research on a little known but critical chapter in the history of medicine and the Second World War. I could not put this book down until I reached the final page. -- Howard Markel, MD, PhD, George E. Wantz Distinguished Professor of the History of MedicineAuthor and journalist Jennet Conant has uncovered a humdinger of a tale, one that is equal parts war story, conspiracy thriller and medical mystery. More than anything, The Great Secret shows how the dogged efforts of a handful of scientists were able to turn a wartime tragedy and coverup into one of society's greatest gifts. This is a rare jewel of a story that readers will love and fellow historians will covet. -- James M. Book SynopsisI have been exiled from my body. I was ejected at a very young age and I got lost.Playwright, author and activist Eve Ensler has devoted her life to the female body - how to talk about it, how to protect and value it. Yet she spent many years disassociated from her own - a disconnection brought on by her father''s sexual abuse and her mother''s remoteness. While working in the Congo, Ensler is shattered to encounter the horrific rape and violence inflicted on the women there. Soon after, she is diagnosed with uterine cancer, and through months of treatment she is forced to become first and foremost a body - pricked, punctured, cut, scanned. It is then that all distance is erased. As she connects her own illness to the devastation of the earth, her life force to the resilience of humanity, she is finally, fully - and gratefully - joined to the body of the world.Trade ReviewA masterpiece. Dr. Henning Saupe’s new book accomplishes both of those things by reworking the very foundation of cancer science, making this a ‘must read’ for anyone serious about understanding how cancer begins and what we can do about it.” —Dr. Chris Chlebowski, author of The Virus and The Host“Dr Saupe is one of the few medical professionals who truly understands the meaning of ‘holistic’ in the context of treating cancer. In Holistic Cancer Medicine, Dr. Saupe not only covers specific treatment strategies that can be key to recovery and healing, he also addresses the limitations of certain treatment and diagnostic approaches, and how to incorporate them effectively. Dr. Saupe tackles delicate and complex discussions in a highly approachable, humble, and practical way without being overwhelming or dogmatic, and the scientific rationale he offers will leave you in awe of both the simplicity and complexity of the human body—and what it truly means to heal and recover.” —Patricia Daly, coauthor of The Ketogenic Kitchen“As a clinical oncologist, I cannot over-emphasize the value of Holistic Cancer Medicine. In it, Dr. Henning Saupe covers authentic and scientifically proven holistic treatments for cancer, with profound potential to change how we view and respond to a cancer diagnosis. Determining root causes and changing mindsets with simple interventions and lifestyle modifications, holistic cancer treatment can be a game changer for our patients’ prognoses and quality of life, under the supervision of a trained holistic or integrative doctor. Let the healing begin!” —Dr. Wafaa Abdel-Hadi, clinical oncologist; founder, AWARE clinic“The integrative oncology community is a small and diverse mix of practitioners from all over the globe. Though we may differ on philosophy and approach, we align at the core: that there is much more to be done to support the patient dealing with a cancerous process than the standard of care alone can offer. I have traveled the world to observe and study with many practitioners—from standard-of-care, state-of-the-art hospitals to shamans in remote villages—and I always learn something new! No one person has all the answers. Just as there are unique fingerprints, there are unique perspectives and approaches to tend to the terrain of the individual. Having had the honor of visiting Dr. Saupe’s beautiful clinic, spending time with his patients, and presenting together at some international conferences, it is clear we resonate deeply in how we think about and care for the patient. Dr. Saupe’s personal and professional experience offer insights to invoke the curiosity and commitment of the patient into taking a more comprehensive look and approach to their cancer care process.” —Dr. Nasha Winters, founder and CEO, drnasha.com; coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer and Mistletoe and the Emerging Future of Integrative Oncology“Holistic Cancer Medicine is a fascinating and important book written by a highly knowledgeable doctor. Dr. Henning Saupe shares his experience and passion in this essential read. A must-read for anyone who wants to empower themselves.” —Sophie Trew, cofounder, Trew Fields Festival; cancer survivor and cancer coach“Holistic Cancer Medicine is a must-read for everyone—doctors, nurses, patients, family members, and anyone who wants to prevent cancer. Not only does the book inform you about the twelve vital fields involved in healing cancer; it also teaches you how to prevent cancer in the first place by creating balance and well-being in the body.” —Katie Deming, MD, radiation oncologist

Book SynopsisIn 2008, Tom Lubbock was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and told he had only one or two years to live. In this remarkable record of those years, lived out in three-month intervals between scans, he examines the question of how to live with death in sight. As the tumour progressed, Tom engaged intensely and imaginatively with work, art, friends, and his wife and their young son, while trying to remain focused on the fact of his impending death. His tumour was located in the area of the brain associated with language, and he describes losing control over the spoken and written word and the resources he drew on to keep communicating; a struggle which brought him ever closer to the mysteries of the origin of speech. As the Independent's chief art critic, he was renowned for the clarity and unconventionality of his writing, and the same fierce intelligence permeates this extraordinary memoir. This is a book written by a man wholly engaged with life even as it ends.

Every chapter has something in it which made me think wow. Having worked in a major cancer charity for many years, Arney writes with genuine in-depth understanding and is a perfect guide. * Daniel M. Kat Arney is a science writer for all of us - a powerful and talented story teller. * Stephen McGann *Kat's book is Dynamite. A crystal clear reappraisal of the story behind that word we fear to mention. * Dallas Campbell, author of Ad Astra: An Illustrated Guide to Leaving the Planet *Forget magic bullets and much hyped miracle cures, to improve the chances of cancer patients we need revolutionary new thinking. And that new thinking, Arney forcefully argues, is evolutionary. She not only places cancer in its evolutionary context but shows how understanding a cancer as an evolving entity leads to new therapeutic approaches that work. • Understanding BRCA: Living with the breast cancer

Hammersmith Health Books Understanding BRCA: Living with the breast cancer

Book SynopsisAt the age of 35 and following the death of her mother from ovarian cancer, Clarissa Foster was found to carry a harmful mutation in the BRCA2 gene which drastically increased her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. She searched for a book that would help her to understand the full extent of what it meant to carry a harmful mutation, the options available to her to lower her risk and, most importantly, how it would feel to undergo risk-reducing surgery. Finding nothing that answered her needs, she set about reading all the available medical literature and liaising with relevant medical professionals to answer her questions. This book is the result of that research and of the decision she took based on it - to have a bilateral mastectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy. Within the context of her own painful experience of family cancer and of elective surgery, Clarissa explains what the BRCA mutation is, what it signifies, what the individual's choices are and what the fall out can be in terms of a woman's body image, identity and sexual functioning. In recognition of the book's power to help people with a diagnosed or suspected BRCA mutation, it was Highly Commended in the 2018 BMA Book Awards and Clarissa received the Beryl Bainbridge First-time Author Award in 2019.Table of ContentsHow it began / The history of BRCA / The science / The effect of BRCA gene mutations / Misconceptions about the BRCA gene / The evolutionary advantage of the BRCA mutation / Cancer / Breast cancer / Male breast cancer / Ovarian cancer / Fallopian tube cancer / Uterine cancer / Prostate cancer / Genetic services / Managing your risks / Screening / Chemoprevention / Preventative surgery / Survival impact / Importance of healthy diet and lifestyle / Other BRCA associated cancers / A personal journey
