Taylor & Francis Ltd Good Governance in Sport
Book SynopsisThis book fills an important gap in the sport governance literature by engaging in critical reflection on the concept of good governance'. It examines the theoretical perspectives that lead to different conceptualisations of governance and, therefore, to different standards for institutional quality. It explores the different practical strategies that have been employed to achieve the implementation of good governance principles. The first part of the book aims to shed light on the complexity and nuances of good governance by examining theoretical perspectives including leadership, value, feminism, culture and systems. The second part of the book has a practical focus, concentrating on reform strategies, from compliance policies and codes of ethics to external reporting and integrity systems. Together, these studies shed important new light on how we define and understand governance, and on the limits and capabilities of different methods for inducing good governance.WiTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd StateOwned Enterprises Ownership Reform
Book SynopsisIn reviewing the new round of state-owned enterprise (SOE) reforms characterized by mixed ownership since 2013 in China, this book systematically investigates the theoretical underpinnings, model options and approaches to implementation of SOE mixed-ownership reforms.SOE reforms have functioned as an integral part of China's transformation to a market-oriented economy. Responding to the changing economic context and negative repercussions of earlier SOE reforms launched in the late 1990s, SOE mixed-ownership reforms encourage the participation of different types of capital and sounder management mechanisms. The author first reviews the impetus behind SOE mixed-ownership reforms and discusses how modern property rights theory and decentralized control theory perform as the theoretical underpinnings of the reforms. Based on cases of many completed SOE mixed-ownership reforms, the book summarizes and assesses the feasible models and implementation details of the reforms. This book is not only a valuable resource for cross-cultural management scholars and educators, but also a useful addition to any executive's library.' - Gunter Stahl, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria 'Intercultural Management addresses one of the most important issues of the 21st century: how people from around the world can work well together. Taking a dynamic, non-North American perspective, this book goes far in offering authentic, reflective, and practical guidance for practitioners as well as academics who want an up-close and genuine understanding of the culture in today's complex global business context.' - Mary Yoko Brannen, University of Victoria, Canada 'This book is a very valuable resource on culture in management - the texts, cases and examples are highly insightful not only for students, but also for executives. Routledge Corporate Foresight Anticipating the Future
Book SynopsisThis book illustrates how to anticipate the future using more than the traditional predictive models (forecasting) based on the forward projection of past experiences, and moving into more advanced methods of anticipation logic (foresight) to build probable scenarios based on weak signals, emerging trends, coexisting presents and potential paths of evolution.Utilizing a helpful, four-part structure, the authors indicate how corporate foresight is fundamental to interpret and lead change, focusing on the two cornerstones of organization and management. They advocate the separation of Research (oriented to the market of tomorrow) from Development (oriented to the market of today), the establishment of a Foresight unit and the concentration of research activities mainly on the acquisition and recombination of external know-how. After an overview of state-of-the-art literature on forecasting methods, they further propose the implementation of a future coverage methodology, which will enable companies to measure and verify the consistency between trends, strategic vision and offered products. These organizational and managing tools are then tested in a case study: the Italian company Eurotech SpA, a leader in the ICT sector.A useful resource for both managers and researchers, the book will help readers gain the tools necessary to tackle change and navigate complexity in organizations.

Taylor & Francis Inc PerformanceBased Medicine
Book SynopsisWith healthcare making the transition from volume-based reimbursement programs to value-based approaches, understanding performance measurement is vital to optimize payment and quality outcomes. Performance-Based Medicine: Creating the High Performance Network to Optimize Managed Care Relationships guides readers through the maze of definitions and discussions related to value-based purchasing, healthcare delivery, and pricing. It tackles the question of how hospitals, HMOs, physician groups, and employers can arrive at an optimized reimbursement cost and coverage access decision that is attractive to consumers yet fulfills the need for a working margin. The book begins by looking at HMOs and the three key factorsreimbursement, coordination, and performancethat have led toward performance-based contracting. Laying the foundation for clearer communication between physician hospitals and purchasers, the author defines important concepts in the discussion,Trade ReviewBill De Marco draws upon his extensive experience to provide a comprehensive and detailed discussion of performance-driven improvement in healthcare. There is much here of value to policy makers, healthcare system leaders and anyone who wishes to have an in-depth and practical understanding of how to improve healthcare performance and how to align payment to drive better performance. Healthcare continues to be in crisis and in need of further reform, and Bill helps leaders understand the steps they need to take to get that done.—George J. Isham, MD, Chief Health Officer, HealthPartnersReal health reform must solve deep systemic problems in the delivery of medical services, not just the way we pay for care. This latest book by Bill De Marco presents a realistic and practical blueprint for fixing the system at its base. Performance-Based Medicine: Creating the High Performance Network to Optimize Managed Care, not the Affordable Care Act, should be required reading for all who really want to build a new and better health system. —Jeff Bauer, PhD, author of Paradox and Imperatives in Health Care and Statistical Analysis for Decision-Makers in Health CareI feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity to review and endorse Mr. De Marco’s amazing new book, Performance-Based Medicine: Creating the High Performance Network to Optimize Managed Care. This book is particularly remarkable in that it focuses not just on pay-for-performance and performance-based medicine, but truly on the provider side of innovating managed care and embracing pay-for-performance. This provider focus emphasizes physician organizations, and transitioning the delivery of actual healthcare to one that rewards clinical excellence, benchmarked performance attainment, and improving purchaser value. This focus of the managed care enterprise from the physician’s perspective, especially in the contexts of performance benchmarking and Lean engineering, is truly unique just by itself. But Bill De Marco, goes a few steps further. As we’re now seeing with the rise of state healthcare exchanges, accountable care organizations, and attempts by purchasers to narrow their provider markets according to their own metrics, Mr. De Marco has hit a "home run" with his book: He has shown how to re-engineer clinical pathways and disease processes – even with free, public-domain tools – to add value in ways that most emerging ACOs and healthcare exchanges have not yet realized how limited their value will be without moving toward value-based care and performance-based contracting. I was particularly impressed with the findings shared by Bill De Marco in describing Episode Treatment Groups® (ETGs®) and their syntheses of complex and statistically-valid disease management datasets in ways that the healthcare market is just beginning to realize. For example, I can easily see Bill’s descriptions of ETGs as transforming pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) away from micro-managing consumption to setting clinical pathways, specific to disease states and their co-morbidities, and therein rewarding benchmark attainments and disease adaptations of specific people. This model is truly the ultimate goal of Paying-for-Performance and transitioning to Performance-Based Metrics, designed to improve clinical care, adherence to healthier lifestyles, optimal disease adaptation, morbidity and mortality prevention, as well as assurance of improved clinical outcomes – all of which purchasers (including CMS) have always wanted to buy from health plans and managed care organizations but have never been able to do so. With Mr. De Marco’s new book, Performance-Based Medicine, these market transformations can finally occur and at the broadest levels within a newly re-emerging U.S. healthcare delivery system. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Getting Results Through Collaboration: Networks
Book SynopsisPublic policy makers and managers in public administration operate under a unique set of circumstances that differ significantly from those in the private sector. Collaboration through networks is a feature of both sectors, but in the private sector it is often characterized by partnerships and alliances meant to benefit a particular company or industry, whereas collaboration through networks in the public sector involve disparate organizations working toward a common goal and not merely to enhance the performance of one among them. Therefore, much of the work that has been published in the business management literature on collaboration through networks does not apply wholesale, without revisions, to the public sector. Mandell and her contributors fill that gap by bringing together academic and practitioner perspectives into a coherent, holistic examination of the operative processes in public-sector networks and network structures. Networks and network structures by definition imply interactions among many organizations, individuals, or interest groups. The definition is broadened here to include collaborative efforts that take place within different countries as well as those that cross national borders. Going beyond the usual emphasis on the opportunities and promises of collaboration through networks, Mandell and her contributors take a hard look at such pitfalls and constraints as those involving power conflicts between individual and organizational commitments, the dichotomy between the need for flexibility and the need for rules and procedures, the difference between the needs and expectations of a national public and a local public, and accountability issues that arise from the need to satisfy outside regulators as well as the goals of the network. In addition to these unique contributions to the literature on networks and network structures, Mandell addresses the important but often overlooked behavioral (micro) issues--e.g., motivation, change, and communication--that tend to be drowned out by the overriding emphasis in the literature on structural (macro) issues. Reflects the latest thinking in the field and explores up-to-the-minute innovations currently being developed.Table of ContentsPreface Overview by Myrna P. MC Press, LLC The Chief Data Officer Handbook for Data
Book SynopsisA practical guide for today’s chief data officers to define and manage data governance programs The relatively new role of chief data officer (CDO) has been created to address the issue of managing a company’s data as a strategic asset, but the problem is that there is no universally accepted “playbook” for this role. Magnifying the challenge is the rapidly increasing volume and complexity of data, as well as regulatory compliance as it relates to data. In this book, Sunil Soares provides a practical guide for today’s chief data officers to manage data as an asset while delivering the trusted data required to power business initiatives, from the tactical to the transformative. The guide describes the relationship between the CDO and the data governance team, whose task is the formulation of policy to optimize, secure, and leverage information as an enterprise asset by aligning the objectives of multiple functions. Soares provides unique insight into the role of the CDO and presents a blueprint for implementing data governance successfully within the context of the position. With practical advice CDOs need, this book helps establish new data governance practices or mature existing practices.

Rowman & Littlefield Industrial Hygiene Simplified: A Guide to
Book SynopsisRecognized as an authoritative treatment of an important subject area, and presented in a conversational and straightforward style, Industrial Hygiene Simplified, Second Edition is an updated edition of the original, well-received textbook. Industrial Hygiene Simplified is valuable and accessible for use by those involved in such disciplines as industrial technology, manufacturing technology, industrial engineering technology, occupational safety, management, and supervision. This book is ideal for those needing a refresh on industrial hygiene concepts and practices they may not use regularly, as well as those practitioners preparing for the Certified Industry Hygiene (CIH) exam. Because it is a dynamic discipline, there is no question about the field of industrial hygiene having undergone significant change over the past four decades. Some of the reasons for this change include technological innovations that have introduced new hazards in the workplace, increased pressure from regulatory agencies, realization by industrial executives that a safe and healthy workplace is typically a more productive and litigious-free workplace, skyrocketing health care and worker’s compensation costs, and increased pressure from environmental groups and the public. Information Age Publishing Advancing European Entrepreneurship Research:
Book SynopsisThe objective with the Strategic Interest Group in Entrepreneurship (SIG Entrepreneurship) of the European Academy of Management (EURAM) is to be the leading research community for engaged entrepreneurship scholars in Europe. The SIG Entrepreneurship aims at promoting research and networking interests for individuals and research groups focused on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial styles of management. This is done by providing a wide-ranging, engaged and internationally-focused forum to discuss and develop research and practice in the field. We put a distinct focus on the key European feature - ‘context matter’ - why we try in all activities to promote and stimulate what ‘European’ might mean in any given context. It means different things in different contexts - and that is the whole point - and thereby the key strength of the European takes on the matter as we see it. This is our idea of the European perspective on entrepreneurship. The tradition of European scholars on entrepreneurship and SMEs system has been consolidated during the last three decades and an increasingly distinct European school of thought has emerged as a consequence. This development provides a solid base for the future development of the field where Europe and its entrepreneurshipscholars will play an increasingly prominent role. With this concern, this book has been managed, gathering the best contributions of our annual meeting re-edited and improved. The central theme is presenting entrepreneurship understood as a working attitude, a mode of thinking, a concrete everyday practice and increasingly an identity marker for ways of being and living within liquid modernity. Entrepreneurship is nowadays a broadly endorsed and accepted signifier for forms of organizing that targets human, organizational and economic renewal and growth.
