  • Manipulating Globalization: The Influence of

Stanford University Press Manipulating Globalization: The Influence of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe era of globalization saw China emerge as the world's manufacturing titan. However, the "made in China" model—with its reliance on cheap labor and thin profits—has begun to wane. Beginning in the 2000s, the Chinese state shifted from attracting foreign investment to promoting the technological competitiveness of domestic firms. This shift caused tensions between winners and losers, leading local bureaucrats to compete for resources in government budget, funding, and tax breaks. While bureaucrats successfully built coalitions to motivate businesses to upgrade in some cities, in others, vested interests within the government deprived businesses of developmental resources and left them in a desperate race to the bottom. In Manipulating Globalization, Ling Chen argues that the roots of coalitional variation lie in the type of foreign firms with which local governments forged alliances. Cities that initially attracted large global firms with a significant share of exports were more likely to experience manipulation from vested interests down the road compared to those that attracted smaller foreign firms. The book develops the argument with in-depth interviews and tests it with quantitative data across hundreds of Chinese cities and thousands of firms. Chen advances a new theory of economic policies in authoritarian regimes and informs debates about the nature of Chinese capitalism. Her findings shed light on state-led development and coalition formation in other emerging economies that comprise the new "globalized" generation.Trade Review"There is an urgent need to understand the sources of China's industrial prowess. Avoiding sweeping generalizations, Ling Chen spotlights China's divergent development paths and convincingly argues that each city's use of foreign capital in the heyday of FDI attraction has shaped and altered its government-business coalitions, with important consequences for industrial upgrading and innovation. This is a must read for anyone interested in China's political economy and its global implications." -- Dali L. Yang * The University of Chicago *"This book should be required reading for anyone hoping to understand how China's relations to foreign capital work in practice. It represents the next generation of research, showing how the strategies of local governments vary fundamentally across regions, how these variations are rooted in local political history, and why some are significantly more effective than others." -- Peter Evans * University of California, Berkeley *"In this impressively researched and tantalizing book, Ling Chen advances capitalism literature by bringing it to subnational development in China. She offers this key development lesson: choices made in the early stages of economic liberalization profoundly shape the subnational political economy for years to come." -- Edmund Malesky * Duke University *"Contrary to the popular image, Chinese localities vary tremendously in their interactions with the global economy. In the past two decades, Beijing has moved from pressing Chinese cities to attract FDI at all costs to upgrading capacity through "indigenous" innovation. Ling Chen gives a masterful account of the interaction of local governments, firms, and vested international coalitions, and why Beijing's new direction could be welcomed in some areas, but not others." -- Margaret M. Pearson * University of Maryland *"One of China's key challenges is managing the shift away from export-led manufacturing toward more profitable, innovation-rich industrial policies. Despite intense leadership attention, implementation remains puzzlingly mixed at best. In this wonderful book, Ling Chen takes us to the very nexus of this shift, arguing that the size of locally-investing foreign firms influences and reinforces coalitions of local bureaucrats, leading some locales to foster and others to stifle these national policy priorities." -- Andrew Mertha * Cornell University *"Manipulating Globalizationcontributes to the best of subnational research in the study of both China's political economy in particular and social science generally. [Chen's] approach contributes to growing concerns that the strategies producing political compliance and economic success in one period have serious consequences for subsequent stages of development, especially for countries developing in the age of globalization, where managing domestic and international firms presents additional challenges." -- Michael Thompson-Brusstar * H-Diplo *"Ling Chen has produced a well-researched and highly detailed account of the ways in which, among other things, China's local bureaucrats have responded to the incentives placed before them by central policy-makers...The book certainly sheds further light on the nature of Chinese capitalism and, more generally, the nature of the developmental state. This type of research can really help us better appreciate Chinese development."––Dylan Sutherland, The China Quarterly"Manipulating Globalization advances our understanding of business-state relations, interest-group politics and industrial policies in contemporary China. It should be on the reading list of any scholar interested in these topics." -- Yue Hou * Perspectives on Politics *"By opening the black box of state and exploring the interaction between government and businesses, Manipulating Globalization advances our understanding of internal driving factors of economic development in an authoritarian regime, which also provides a vivid explanation for the dynamic state–market relationship. How an emerging economy such as China integrates itself into a new globalized world, while still preserving autonomous policies, remains an appealing puzzle. Chen's book provides one feasible and interesting explanation." -- Wei Li * China International Strategy Review *"Rich in its data, authoritative in its argumentation, thorough in its investigation, and important in its findings about globalization and structural economic transformation of China, Chen's work constitutes an essential reading on Chinese political economy." -- Vasilis Trigkas * Pacific Affairs *Table of ContentsContents and Abstracts2Chasing Foreign Capital chapter abstractThis chapter examines the rise of the FDI-attraction paradigm at the national level and the emergence of local investment-seeking states in the 1990s. It explores in detail the varied strategies that city governments employed to attract foreign investors to launch the campaign of FDI attraction, ranging from tax cuts and land and utility discounts to industrial zone establishments. At one end of the strategic continuum are local governments that prioritized large, leading multinationals that have been playing the role of the "dragon's head" at the top of the global value chain, whereas, on the other end are cities where bureaucrats brokered deals with small-scale foreign firms established by "guerilla investors" at the bottom of the value chain through flexible arrangements. 3From FDI Attraction to Domestic Competitiveness chapter abstractThis chapter traces the relative decline of the previous FDI attraction paradigm and the emerging paradigm of domestic technology competitiveness, drawing on government documents, media text analysis, and interviews. The chapter then introduces the actors, arguments, and the matrix of supporting institutions and policy tools underpinning the two policy paradigms. It draws attention to the coexistence of the two paradigms at the local level, where policies and institutions of FDI attraction profoundly affect the government's response to domestic upgrading and their choice of development strategies. 4Local Policy Making, Globalized Coalitions, and Resource Allocation chapter abstractThis chapter delves into the coalitional politics of policy making and resource allocation by investigating strategies of city government officials. The chapter examines the patterns of bureaucratic competition between international commerce departments and newly emerged domestic technology departments and their respective business clients, including foreign and domestic firms. I explain the influence of FDI attraction on domestic politics by showing (1) how the overlap between FIEs and exporters shaped the degree of perceived threat and the cohesiveness of the vested interests in international commerce under the rule of fragmented bureaucratic competition and (2) how the existence of large foreign firms strengthened the bargaining power of the vested interest bureaucrats against allocating resources to the domestic technology coalition. The direction and the magnitude of foreign influence, therefore, is filtered and channeled through local bureaucracy. 5The Microfoundations of State Intervention and Policy Effectiveness chapter abstractThis chapter explains the effectiveness of policy implementation and the varied capabilities of local governments, using policy tools to generate firm-level upgrading incentives. Using China's largest manufacturing industry—the electronics industry—as an example, the chapter compares the development of China's two largest manufacturing cities, Suzhou and Shenzhen. It demonstrates how earlier patterns of FDI attraction and the prioritization of large or small FIEs gave rise to distinctive foreign–domestic firm relations. Through both in-depth case studies and hierarchical models, the chapter shows that a segregated relationship started by the group-offshoring strategy of large FIEs makes upgrading policies, such as government funding and tax cuts, less effective and dampens the innovation incentives for domestic private firms. By contrast, a more equal, broadly connected relationship started by the subcontracting strategy of small FIEs makes upgrading policies more likely to generate firm-level innovation behavior. 6Varieties of Local Capitalism in Historical Perspective chapter abstractThis chapter traces the historical roots of local variation by chronologically and cross-sectionally placing China in a comparative historical perspective. It compares varieties of local capitalism in China across four periods: the late Qing and early Republican period, the Mao era, the post-Mao period, and the globalized era. It explores how the historically entrenched top-down and bottom-up modes of capitalism have conditioned local government preferences, as well as their reaction to centrally driven development initiatives, leading them to attract foreign firms in the globalized era. The narrowly selective development strategies based on top-down capitalism were more effective in the industrial transformation during the preglobalized era before the 1990s. The influx of FDI since then, however, has unleashed new complexity so that cultivating bottom-up, broadly supportive networks with small firms was more likely to provide an institutional environment for the competitiveness of domestic private businesses. 7Making Economic Policies Work chapter abstractThis chapter summarizes the findings of the book. It draws attention to how global production fragmented or integrated state agencies and businesses, shaped the ways they perceived their interests, and ultimately affected the local political environments for domestic private firms. Compared with other approaches, the theory advanced in this book takes the incentives of local state agencies seriously. It shows that in an authoritarian country where businesses do not have a direct role in policy making, the local bureaucrats, by pursuing their own political and economic interests, can influence the political and economic environment of production. The chapter then broadens out to map major Asian economies in Northeast and Southeast Asia in a comparative picture. 1Bureaucrats, Businesses, and Economic Policies in a Globalized China chapter abstractThis chapter introduces background on emergence of national campaigns to cultivate domestic competitiveness in contrast to China's previous role as the "world's workshop." It reveals the divergent ways in which localities responded to and carried out policies. The chapter accounts for such variation by breaking down the assumption of a coherent and single-level state that is inherent in the state-centric approach, while at the same time disaggregating the influence of foreign capital assumed by the FDI-driven perspective. By examining the interaction of foreign capital and local states, the chapter discusses how globalization influences the rise of investment-seeking states, the bureaucratic coalitions in city policy making, the effectiveness of policies for local firms, and the varieties of local capitalism. It also discusses the logic of the research design, the major sites of field work, and the sources of qualitative and quantitative data that the book draws on.

Book SynopsisAfter two decades of reinvention, Japanese companies are re-emerging as major players in the new digital economy. They have responded to the rise of China and new global competition by moving upstream into critical deep-tech inputs and advanced materials and components. This new "aggregate niche strategy" has made Japan the technology anchor for many global supply chains. Although the end products do not carry a "Japan Inside" label, Japan plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives across many critical industries. This book is an in-depth exploration of current Japanese business strategies that make Japan the world's third-largest economy and an economic leader in Asia. To accomplish their reinvention, Japan's largest companies are building new processes of breakthrough innovation. Central to this book is how they are addressing the necessary changes in organizational design, internal management processes, employment, and corporate governance. Because Japan values social stability and economic equality, this reinvention is happening slowly and methodically, and has gone largely unnoticed by Western observers. Yet, Japan's more balanced model of "caring capitalism" is both competitive and transformative, and more socially responsible than the unbridled growth approach of the United States.Trade Review"Ulrike Schaede's new book combines an invaluable primer on Japanese business culture with a striking analysis of Japan's little understood strategy for producing enduring economic strength based on manufacturing excellence and constant, managed change. I came away with renewed admiration for the country's political and corporate leadership, and Japan's ability to forge a successful economic future despite the many daunting challenges one often hears about."—Ambassador Ira Shapiro, former U.S. Trade Negotiator with Japan, former Chairman of the National Association of Japan-America Societies"This authoritative and sophisticated account of how Japanese companies have quietly reformulated how they compete in the global economy is a timely reminder why we need to pay attention to Japan. Japanese companies and their technologies remain, and will continue to remain, critically relevant in our fast-changing world."—Alberto Moel, VEO Robotics"For more than a generation, the outside world has been ready to write off Japan's economy as yesterday's story, in contrast to the tomorrows being created elsewhere, especially in China. Ulrike Schaede clearly and convincingly lays out how out-of-touch that judgment is—and how much more impressive the creativity, flexibility, and re-invention of the Japanese business system look when examined up close. The crispness and concision of the book make it a pleasure to read, and its originality will make it useful for anyone who wants to understand the next stage in global business."—James Fallows, The Atlantic"Schaede truly understands Japanese business strategy and culture. With deep insights and keen analysis, she offers an update on how Japanese companies are evolving to compete in the new global economy. And, she shows how they carefully harmonize social stability with economic success."—Kyota Omori, Chairman, Mitsubishi Research Institute"A gem! Schaede links corporate culture to incentives and outcomes, and shows how Japanese firms have kept the tight corporate culture that makes things right, but add elements of the loose culture that makes the right things. She gives concrete examples of Japanese firms that got it right and how they did it."—Robert Alan Feldman, Tokyo University of Science"Schaede's book offers an up-to-date, intriguing, rich, and easy to read account of changes in Japanese business over the last 20 years. As such, it deserves a wide readership and it will definitely enter my reading list for students."—Harald Conrad, The Journal of Japanese Studies"Japan's economy and its evolving business systems matter, and this insightful evaluation explains how and why. A definite read."—Hugh T. Patrick, Chairman, Center on Japanese Economy and Business, Columbia Business School"Schaede's book not only advances our view of the possibilities for Japanese business reinventions on a variety of technology frontiers, but also the broader nature of linkages that underpin the prospects for prosperity and security in Asia and beyond."—Saadia M. Book SynopsisThe twentieth century was an era of socialist revolutionary transformations and significant social-democratic reforms. By the twenty-first century, these socialist inspired movements have largely disappeared, their ideologies have been disavowed, and their institutions dismantled and replaced by global neoliberal capitalism. This book explores the social, political and economic forces driving these movements in Western Europe and in the USSR, explaining their initial triumphs and how they eventually faltered under the influence of global neoliberalism. David Lane examines the nature and appeal of neoliberal capitalism and analyses current social and political proposals for its reform or replacement, including statist forms of capitalism; social-democratic and ecological globalization reforms; self-sustaining autonomous communities; and globalised forms of social-democracy or socialism. Outlining his own proposal to replace global neoliberal capitalism with political systems based on a combination of market socialism and state planning, Lane provides important insights for ways forward, and a challenge for parties seeking political and economic alternatives.Table of Contents1. • Shadow Trades: The Dark Side of Global Business

Sage Publications Ltd Shadow Trades: The Dark Side of Global Business

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlongside burgeoning global business, which asserts its legality, ethics and social responsibility, there exists a dark side of shadow trades manifesting various shades of legitimacy. Not only do the latter’s corrupt practices, dubious supply chains and other illicit operations run in tandem with global business, these borderless trades intersect with economic structures and contribute to systems adopted by corporations, endorsed by neoliberal capitalism, that are often condoned by governments and unwittingly sustained by consumers. In a very real sense, all of us may be implicated in shadow trades through our work, consumption and citizenship. Even before we can begin to confront and constrain shadow trades, their business models first need to be identified and analysed in all their networked complexity, interconnectivity with global business and embeddedness within the world economy. Numerous hard questions need to be raised around enabling circumstances and responsibilities of stakeholders, as well as the winners and losers resulting from business globalisation and socio-economic inequities within and between countries. Providing background, evidence and analysis on select exemplars of shadow trades, this book provides graduate students of business, plus scholars in the social sciences, together with practitioners and policymakers, consumer groups and civil society, with an indispensable resource for critical engagement. Only through knowledge gained by research and advocacy for transparency can we begin to shed light on this dark side of global business, enabling all of us to grapple with activism against and collaborative action towards undermining all shadow trades. Amos Owen Thomas was a Docent / Reader in Marketing and International Business at Stockholm University until his recent retirementTrade ReviewInternational business texts typically focus upon everyday corporate activities and the various political, legal, and cultural environments to which they must adapt. These books do consider illicit practices, such as counterfeiting, that threaten companies, as well as some ethical, social responsibility, and sustainability issues, but generally tilt toward the sunny side of global commerce. In Shadow Trades: The Dark Side of Global Business, author Amos Owen Thomas introduces readers to a wide range of much more controversial, often despicable, business conduct that flourishes on a worldwide scale. Topics include exploitation of migrants and laborers, human organ trafficking, hazardous waste transhipment, the global arms trade, money laundering, and much more. Thomas’ writing is engaging, and his chapters end with a variety of sources – research works, executive books, informational websites, and documentary videos – for further study. Shadow Trades will make a nice supplement for international business, management, and marketing classes. -- Terrence H. Witkowski, Professor of Marketing and Director, International Business Program, College of Business, California State University, USAShadow Trades takes on the existence and growth of illegal markets from a business perspective. Labour exploitation, organ transplant tourism, environmental crimes, waste transhipment, arms trafficking, money laundering, and related dark markets are examined, using available data and careful analysis of the relationships among legal and illicit markets, businesses, and government activity in alternately ignoring or facilitating this largely hidden activity. The consequences of this situation for legitimate business and broader economic development are discussed, as are the actions that might be taken to improve the contemporary situation globally. Good insights into some bad behavior, and the reasons why it continues to thrive. -- Jay S. Albanese, Professor and Criminologist, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, USAThe legitimate global capitalist financial and business world lives in creative co-existence with its dark alter ego. As this book demonstrates, these shadow trades haunt capitalism and complicit government as viruses. These co-inhabit spaces with hosts such that management, healthcare and environmentalism have their converse in exploited labour, organ harvesting and waste dumping. Amos Owen Thomas is bold enough to take a fierce analytical torch to this murky admixture in a book that will become a mainstream source for business and business educators -- David Weir, Professor, York Business School, York St John University, UKThis book makes a great addition to the literature on CSR and Business Ethics, filling one of the gaps that have existed in management knowledge. I believe that there are still no credible books in this area for education and training purposes on the market. Dr Thomas’ book will certainly be a welcome addition to what we have now at business schools around the globe. -- Samuel O Idowu, Deputy CEO, Global Corporate Governance Institute, UKThis is a very important book on a subject typically ignored in management education. The author′s unique perspectives and insights make for a vital contribution to our knowledge. It is important for students and the general public to understand these challenges, so I hope the book gets some traction in academia and beyond. -- Laurence Chalip, Professor, Director, School of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism Management George Mason University, Virginia, USACompelling and original, Shadow Trades exposes the criminogenic nature of international capitalism. The spectres of fraud, violence and coercion lurk on every page. Essential reading for all scholars of critical globalization studies. -- Leo McCann, Professor of Management, University of York, UKDriving directly to the heart of crime, greed and desperation, the author explains the interactions between leading world countries and companies profiting from illegal activities to economically disadvantaged countries mired in political conflict and military rule. Shadow Trades describes how UN, laws, international conventions and interventions are circumvented by ingenious yet, corrupt means to the detriment of every living creature on this planet. -- Colleen Clarke, Professor Emeritus, Minnesota State University, Mankato, USA Author, Stealing HistoryAmos Owen Thomas addresses a fascinating collection of cross border business activities that provide a rich source of material for discussing business ethics and corporate social responsibility. By highlighting these examples of cross border activity that are either illegal or at the margins of social acceptance, the book provides a unique source for reflecting on contemporary international economic value creation with a dark side. -- Johan Lindeque, Assistant Professor of Strategy, University of Amsterdam Business School, NetherlandsProfessor Amos Owen Thomas′s book on dark trade makes a tremendous contribution to uncovering an important phenomenon of economy that has been little known. -- Tony Fang, Professor, Stockholm Business School, Stockholm University, SwedenA very interesting and novel book on the illegitimate aspects of international trade. Arguably, economic globalization has accelerated the growth in international trade globally in recent decades. But, it is assumed that globalisation fosters only legitimate trade. Hence, there is not much consideration in the international business literature about the dark side of international trade. This timely book sheds a much needed light on issues such as human trafficking, money laundering, waste management and arms trade. It provides an excellent critique of the push and pull migration theories underlying these shadow trades and illuminates our understanding of the global human resource implications of these unsavoury/disreputable trades. A must read for academics, practitioners, government official, policy makers and social activists. -- Yaw Debrah, Professor, School of Management, Swansea University, UKShadow Trades makes fascinating reading. We know the dark side of international business exists but perhaps understandably it is rarely examined objectively and analytically by academics or taught as part of university degree programmes. Dr. Thomas should be congratulated, therefore, not just for a clearly written, compelling text, but for the way he has researched and addressed this much neglected topic. The text contains a the wealth of information that will be of interest to practitioners, policy makers and all those concerned with social responsibility, as well as academics and students of international business. -- David A. Kirby, Holder of The Queen′s Award for Enterprise Promotion, UK. Former Vice President (Enterprise and Community Service), The British University in Egypt. Honorary Professor, Almaty UniversiThis book, Shadow Trades is unlike any other book on business ethics. It belongs to class of its own in several ways. First it covers several ethical topics ranging from business, medicine, human trafficking, environment, hazardous recycling, military contracting and money laundering; all in the global landscape. Second, and perhaps even more important, the writing style and easy-to-follow narrative ensures that the book will engage students and the various audiences. Third, it is an intelligent, quietly provocative book touching upon, though tangentially, on controversial social-economic issues such as imperialism, capitalism and Marxian philosophy. Fourth and finally, the skilful use of language makes the book even more appealing to serious as well as leisure readers. -- Edward E. Marandu, Professor of Marketing, Faculty of Business University of BotswanaShadow Trades is a must-read for all who are interested in gaining insights into the power and influence that access to finite, valuable resources benefits those who achieve it by any means available. Moreover, this book provides well-documented cases, including from recent Middle East history, of how various players, often foreign, take advantage of the woes that afflict developing countries to threaten lives and disrupt whole regions. -- Nabil Sultan, Visiting Professor at SERVUS, Free University of Amsterdam. Formerly Dean, College of Business Administration, A′Sharqiyah University, Oman.Shadow Trades could not come at a more opportune time - as we’re flooded with news of social and racial disparities brought to light by the pandemic, Mexico’s shelters overwhelmed by migrants hoping to cross the US border, mass school kidnappings in northern Nigeria, Indian farmers demonstrating against the new agriculture laws leaving them unprotected from the greedy private sector. Shadow Trades goes a step further to reveal many dire causes and effects of neo-colonialism and call out for action. Eye-opening, informative, a must-read for anyone who chooses not to remain ignorant, "Shadow Trades" is looking to convince us to get involved, and to persuade the government and corporations to take meaningful action and place the protection of human rights above profit. It is unfortunate that we still need this training in our humanity, and while this level of clarity can be shocking, it is perhaps necessary. -- Maria Yannakea, Stockholm Business School; Marketing Operations Manager, CBS Interactive, USADespite an increased focus on CSR and business ethics, shadow trades are thriving underneath the legitimate surface of global business. Human trafficking, resource pilfering and money laundering co-exist alongside seemingly legitimate trades, often benefiting from a symbiotic relationship. Dr Thomas’ book examines the business models of shadow trades and the complex ways in which illicit activities underpin the global economy. The murky aspects of capitalism are rarely discussed in business ethics classes, which is why Shadow Trades is an important and timely contribution to management literature. Calling for transparency and action, Shadow Trades is an invitation to scholars, practitioners and consumers to disarm the dark side of international trade. -- Robyn Belak, Stockholm Business School; Digital Marketing Manager, Stora Enso, SwedenWhat a fantastic page turner! Whether you are an academic looking for sources about the topic or whether you are passionate about ethical business I highly recommend this book. If you are a business leader I especially recommend this read, it will challenge your company’s values and culture and start some healthy boardroom conversations. I loved how Dr Thomas always had this ability of taking complex, multi-faceted topics and making them so simple and relatable to an academic, an executive keen on making a difference or an average consumer wanting to make informed, ethical choices. I particularly liked how this book emphasises the role of investigative journalism to drive accountability to businesses, governments and help consumers make informed choices. -- Maya Rigg, Maastricht School of Management; Chief Executive Officer, Elite Havens, SingaporeThis book provides a great overview on illegal practices and issues of the current business environment, which are a result of the products and services we use in our everyday life. Topics such as labour exploitation, environment degradation and money laundering (and many more) are analysed and permit to gain critical knowledge on today′s business practices. I can recommend this book to everyone who is linked to the business world (students, lecturers, managers...) as it enables you to become critical towards common business practices and to recognise and understand the shadow trades behind those. Moreover, it can be a source of inspiration for further research in this mostly undiscussed area of today′s business world. -- Jonathan Ribeiro, Copenhagen Business School; Demand Activation Assistant, Mars, GermanyTable of ContentsChapter 1: Charting the Borderless Chapter 2: Darkness Enlightened Chapter 3: Irregular Migration & Labour Exploitation Chapter 4: Transplant Tourism & Organs Acquisition Chapter 5: Resource Pilferage & Environment Degradation Chapter 6: Waste Transhipment & Hazardous Recycling Chapter 7: Arms Conveyance & Military Contracting Chapter 8: Financial Sleight & Money Laundering Chapter 9: Tracking Cross-Currents Chapter 10: Imperative of Engagement

Book Synopsis*Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden’s book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.Trade ReviewIn this critical—and thorough–—analysis of US government policies regarding the country’s involvement in the global economy during the last half century, the author (Council on Foreign Relations) concentrates on the changing competitive environment the US faces. In the process of assessing the impact of those changes, he discusses a wide range of policies and how they affect US economic progress and international relations. Those policies include not only tariffs and trade agreements but also domestic tax policies, government support for enhanced investment, improvements in the education system, immigration issues, and monetary policies as they influence the international role of US currency. Part of the analysis deals with state and local governments’ attempts to take advantage of international economic opportunities in the face of insufficient federal commitments. In the process, the author also provides an insightful history of worldwide economic transformation over the last 50-plus years. This analysis is very well written and documented and is strongly recommended to anyone interested in international trade and global economic development, especially as national policy pertains to them. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. * CHOICE *Rising opposition to globalization has thrown an already polarized political environment in America into near mayhem, with our key economic partnerships hanging in the balance. Ted Alden provides a cogent and constructive analysis of the origins of opposition to economic openness that charts a viable path forward. It is essential reading for all who care about America's role in the global economy. -- Gordon Hanson, Pacific Economic Cooperation Chair in International Economic Relations at UCSD and Director, Center on Global Transformation“Ted Alden hits the nail on the head with this cogent analysis of the trade issue, its impact on American workers, our failure to meaningfully help those adversely affected and what we should now be doing to save globalization by adopting more thoughtful and far-reaching policies.” -- Steven Rattner, Chairman, Willett Advisors LLC"Ted Alden's new book, Failure to Adjust, captures vividly the inherent tension in America’s role in the post-war global economy: that between the principal architect and guardian of an open system, on the one hand, and a participant and competitor within that system, on the other. That tension cannot be removed. But in Alden’s thoughtful analysis, as the global economy grows, the balance between player and referee that needed to shift in America in favor of the former, has been late in coming. It is a really interesting and detailed assessment, that avoids overly simple diagnoses and prescriptions." -- Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate and William R. Out of stock

Book SynopsisInspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure tale, celebrated editor-in-chief of The Wine Economist Mike Veseth takes his readers Around the World in Eighty Wines. The journey starts in London, Phileas Fogg’s home base, and follows Fogg’s itinerary to France and Italy before veering off in search of compelling wine stories in Syria, Georgia, and Lebanon. Every glass of wine tells a story, and so each of the eighty wines must tell an important tale. We head back across Northern Africa to Algeria, once the world’s leading wine exporter, before hopping across the sea to Spain and Portugal. We follow Portuguese trade routes to Madeira and then South Africa with a short detour to taste Kenya’s most famous Pinot Noir. Kenya? Pinot Noir? Really! The route loops around, visiting Bali, Thailand, and India before heading north to China to visit Shangri-La. Shangri-La? Does that even exist? It does, and there is wine there. Then it is off to Australia, with a detour in Tasmania, which is so cool that it is hot. The stars of the Southern Cross (and the title of a familiar song) guide us to New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. We ride a wine train in California and rendezvous with Planet Riesling in Seattle before getting into fast cars for a race across North America, collecting more wine as we go. Pause for lunch in Virginia to honor Thomas Jefferson, then it’s time to jet back to London to tally our wines and see what we have learned. Why these particular places? What are the eighty wines and what do they reveal? And what is the surprise plot twist that guarantees a happy ending for every wine lover? Come with us on a journey of discovery that will inspire, inform, and entertain anyone who loves travel, adventure, or wine.Trade ReviewVeseth, a wine writer and professor emeritus at the University of Puget Sound, has penned an informative work that will entertain any wine lover. Drawing inspiration from Jules Verne's classic novel, Veseth becomes a latter-day Phileas Fogg, bringing his reader on an adventure in wine history, grape cultivars, geography, climate, and economics that follows the fictional character's journey around the world. Since he limits his sampling to just eighty wines, readers might likely disagree with his wine choices from some well-known regions and marvel at the existence of wine in others. Really, Pinot Noir in Kenya? But the reader is given justification for choices made... [T]he wealth of material and the author's thoroughly enjoyable approach make this a valuable addition to any collection. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. * CHOICE *Inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, Veseth’s personal journey through the complex and compelling world of wine starts and ends on London’s St. James’s Street, home to fine-wine merchants Berry Bros. & Rudd since 1698. Along the way, Veseth tours Bordeaux and Burgundy, where some of the world’s best wines are made, and visits the more uncharted wine-growing territories of Bali, Thailand, and Tasmania. Veseth chooses the wines he profiles based on the ability of each to excite the palate, and the imagination: 'Each of [the] eighty wines must tell a story, [but they] must not just each tell their own story.... They must collectively form a picture and tell a story that reveals a greater truth,' he writes. As a result, reading his book is rather like attending a swanky cocktail party: it contains a vast and varied buffet, with loads of interesting conversational tidbits. The book makes for an entertaining introduction to the world of wines. As an added bonus, the author also provides a bibliography for those wishing to delve deeper into the topic. * Publishers Weekly *Veseth undertakes a global adventure seeking stories of the people, places and cultures that are the essence of what makes wine so unique: an intoxicating enchantment that draws in people from all walks of life. Casting off from the historic Berry Bros. & Rudd wine shop in London, Veseth embarks on a long and fascinating trip that includes not only expected areas, like France, Italy, Australia, and California, but also places less known for wine making, such as Syria, Kenya, and Virginia. Each leg of the journey is documented through interesting stories, with a small selection of representative wines listed at the end of the chapter. A wine economist, Veseth often discusses the varying impacts such influences as war and climate change have on the wine industry in the particular regions.... The final list of wines discussed is much longer than the 80 that readers will anticipate. * Booklist *Through reading, we can taste meals never eaten or savor wines not yet swallowed. A satisfying book transports readers; a memorable book also transforms them. . . . This non-fiction work takes readers on a rapid, engaging skip and skim around the globe—highlighting the diversity of wines now produced across the planet. . . . An entertaining smatter of the eclectic, a trove of stories and facts not found in other books about wine. * Forbes *[An] erudite soul, Mike ‘The Wine Economist’ Veseth, treads a playful path throughout Around the World in 80 Wines, replicating Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in 80 Days. Besides citing and assessing scores of great wines, Veseth breaks out of stuffy academia, seeking out which Spanish wines most exemplify soccer powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona, or tracking down and profiling ‘The Mondavi of Mumbai.’ During his journey shadowing the route of Phileas Fogg and Passepartout, readers can glean fascinating minutiae (Thailand’s biggest wine producer is a man who co-founded Red Bull) or go more in-depth on topics such as riesling’s identity crisis or how a major peso crisis helped spawn Argentina’s booming malbec industry. * Star Tribune *Around the World in Eighty Wines pulls together research from [Veseth’s] extensive travels and highlights wines that tell stories about the world’s vintners and vineyards…. Veseth uses the wines to explore interesting questions of history, economics, terroir and taste. And his enthusiasm for the people he meets and the stories they tell should encourage wine lovers to take a voyage of their own, pushing beyond their comfort zones to explore the vast and surprising world of wine. * Wine Spectator *This follows the path of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, picking up a glass in each of the 80 locations. A breezy, easy to follow sampler of wines from… well, everywhere, including Shangri-la, this book has a good sense of humor and a wide-ranging, bird’s-eye perspective. It will digress into history, marketing, economics, culture, politics and religion and take you right along with it. A really fun and engaging read that will make you want to start planning an 80-wine whistle-stop tour of your own. * Paste Magazine *If you are like me, great wine and good food are two things that have the ability to enhance your happiness in life…. [This book] can help elevate those already good moods. In his latest book, Around the World in Eighty Wines, Mike Veseth tries to answer the question, ‘Why wine?’ Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic tale, Veseth follows Phileas Fogg’s journey around the world to explore why wine is a source of such enjoyment, passion and obsession. The answer: ‘Wine fills your glass, but it can also fill your heart and focus your mind.’ Despite battling war, poor economic conditions and changing climates, winemakers in every corner of the world remain dedicated to their craft. As Veseth scours the world for the best bottles of wine, he regales the stories of these winemakers, not just in the usual places like Italy, France and the U.S., but in often-overlooked countries like Algeria, Georgia, Lebanon, Shangri-La, Syria and Tasmania. * The Pulse Magazine *Mike Veseth has deftly captured the magical worldwide journey of wine. This is a great rollicking educational roller coaster of a ride that the global fraternity of wine enthusiasts will embrace. -- Robert Hill-Smith, vigneron, Yalumba, AustraliaLike a master blender, Mike Veseth stimulates the mind's appetite with a wonderful balance of illusion and substance, as complex as a fine wine. Structured with cultural nuance and imagination, this delightful book is a must-read for serious wine enthusiasts and neophytes alike. Circumnavigating the world in eighty wines should be enjoyed with a glass of your favorite 'origin' in hand. -- George Sandeman, Sogrape Vinhos, PortugalThis captivating book is about more than just wine—it’s about human nature, travel, and enjoyment. As the Rick Steves of the wine world, Mike uses his rich talents as a writer and storyteller to transport the reader to a new territory to explore as each of the eighty wines is opened. -- Howard Soon, master winemaker, Sandhill WinesMike Veseth takes the reader on a Phileas Fogg–inspired odyssey in search of the answer to the question: why wine? The solution is a true global adventure—a mosaic of stories that illuminate wine beyond the glass to embody the enduring human spirit through controversy, love, loss, and hope. I was packing my bags to join the journey before the end of part I. A must-read for all who love wine and life. -- Michelle Williams, author of the Rockin Red Blog and Snooth contributing writerThis adventurous book shows us that wine is about more than what’s in the glass: it is about meeting new people and discovering vibrant cultures and amazing landscapes. Mike’s engaging storytelling reveals the histories behind the wine he tastes, which are often just as complex and delightful as the vino itself. -- Matteo Bisol, Venissa Winery, ItalyTable of ContentsPart I: From London to Beirut 1 London: The Challenge Is Made and the Journey Begins 2 France: Which Bottle? • The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West

Rowman & Littlefield The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn his influential and widely debated Capitalism and Slavery, Eric Williams examined the relation of capitalism and slavery in the British West Indies. Binding an economic view of history with strong moral argument, his study of the role of slavery in financing the Industrial Revolution refuted traditional ideas of economic and moral progress and firmly established the centrality of the African slave trade in European economic development. He also showed that mature industrial capitalism in turn helped destroy the slave system. Establishing the exploitation of commercial capitalism and its link to racial attitudes, Williams employed a historicist vision that has set the tone for an entire field. Williams’s profound critique became the foundation for studies of imperialism and economic development and has been widely debated since the book’s initial publication in 1944. The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery now makes available in book form for the first time his dissertation, on which Capitalism and Slavery was based. The significant differences between his two works allow us to rethink questions that were considered resolved and to develop fresh problems and hypotheses. It offers the possibility of a much deeper reconsideration of issues that have lost none of their urgency—indeed, whose importance has increased.Trade ReviewThe fact that Williams’s previously hard to access doctoral thesis is now available to the general public will help to clarify important aspects of the ‘Williams Thesis’ and its genesis. . . . The route from dissertation to final text runs parallel to Williams’s trajectory from a young black student combating racism and imperial narratives at Oxford to the future prime minister of an independent nation. Apart from being an important historiographical document, Williams’s dissertation is therefore also a historical source in its own right. . . . [R]econsidering the ‘making of’ the Williams Thesis can have a profound impact on how we view its later interpretations and current relevance. . . . The Economic Aspect provides important insights into the genealogy of the Williams Thesis that are much harder to grasp from the more polemical, and more layered text of Capitalism and Slavery. . . . The publication of The Economic Aspect finally makes it possible for a wider audience to retrace Williams’s steps. In the process, we can start to disentangle Williams’s complicated relationship to the Oxford imperial historians, radical predecessors and contemporaries, and the emerging anti-colonial struggles of his day. * International Review Of Social History *Here readers will find the original formulation of some of the ideas that led to Eric Williams’s long-famous Capitalism and Slavery, which addressed, among a wide range of provocative issues, why Britain abolished the slave trade and slavery within its empire during the early years of the nineteenth century largely for strong economic rather than humanitarian reasons, though both sources of motivation carried weight. This new book shows the dissertation as a separate, if closely related, intellectual project of great insight. The published dissertation will surely awaken new interest in Williams's ideas that have sparked so much heated debate in their continued global relevance to issues related to capitalism, power, poverty, and much more. -- David Barry Gaspar, Duke UniversityA major publishing event for scholars and students of slavery, abolition, capitalism, and the Atlantic world. The appearance of Eric Williams's thesis will mark a turning point in the historical debates that his work has long fueled. -- Christopher Schmidt-Nowara, Tufts UniversityTable of ContentsPrefaceDale TomichIntroduction: From the Dissertation to Capitalism and Slavery: Did Williams's Abolition Thesis Change?William Darity Jr. The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and SlaveryEric WilliamsIntroductionPart IChapter 1: The Impolicy of the Slave SystemChapter 2: The Superiority of the French West IndiesChapter 3: East India SugarChapter 4: The Attempt to Secure an International AbolitionChapter 5: The West Indian ExpeditionsChapter 6: The Significance of the West Indian ExpeditionsChapter 7: The Abolition of the Slave TradePart IIChapter 8: The Abolitionists and EmancipationChapter 9: The Foreign Slave TradeChapter 10: East India SugarChapter 11: The Distressed AreasChapter 12: The Industrialists and EmancipationEpilogueAppendix I: "The Influential Men"Appendix II: Ramsay as an AuthorityAppendix III: The Intercolonial Slave TradeBibliography

Book SynopsisThis comprehensive book traces the role of money in the creation of the state. Starting in the early modern era, Paul Wilson explores the monetary systems of empires and new states in the age of nation-building in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Spanning a wide geographical and historical range from the creation of the United States of America to the establishment of the European Union and the breakup of the Soviet Union and beyond, the author examines changing attitudes toward monetary sovereignty as dozens of new states created new currencies since the end of the Second World War. Wilson analyzes the decision–making of newly independent states in their choice of an appropriate currency, considering the complex factors involved—ranging from the purely economic to questions of security, international recognition, and outright nationalism that have played a part. The author challenges the notion that each country must necessarily have its own currency and explains why some newly independent countries have chosen to adopt the currency of another state. Citing the examples of international currency unions of the nineteenth century and the present day, he contends that sharing a currency does not represent a surrender of political sovereignty. Instead, Wilson argues for a more rational attitude toward money as a facilitator of transactions rather than as a symbol of national identity.

Paper money aficionados will find much of interest in this highly absorbing book and its study of the relationships between nationhood and currency. * National Bank Note Society Journal *Paul Wilson skillfully sifts through the ever-changing, shifting sands of monetary sovereignty to produce a clear, coherent portrait. What do we see? That monetary sovereignty is all about the right to determine a unit of account, a means of payment, and, yes, the right to produce money. -- Steve H. Hanke, The Johns Hopkins UniversityThe subject of money has intrigued us for millennia and has been treated in many books, but none like Paul Wilson’s fascinating account of how money helped fashion nations. The historical breadth of coverage is breathtaking and engrossing. The choice of monetary regimes has sometimes been determined by economic and sometimes by political considerations. Unsurprisingly, a distinct national currency has often been an important symbol of nationhood for newly independent countries, whether its value was linked to gold, another currency, an inflation target, or nothing at all. But as Wilson engagingly documents: ‘There is no single solution to the question of which currency regime should a new country adopt.’ Wilson traces more currency history than you probably thought you needed to know, but by the time you finish his absorbing account, you will be glad that you read every word. -- Warren Coats, International Monetary Fund, 1976–2004; author of One Currency for BosniaAny central banker who wishes to set the monetary history of his or her state in historic perspective and in its relation to broad international trends will find this stimulating book essential reading. * Central Banking Journal *The primary challenge through all of the stories recorded in the book is how to ensure stability in the value of the currency. Irrespective of whether the currency is based on a tangible object such as gold and/or silver, or linked in some way to another currency, citizens will seek out stable value. This book tracks the constant struggle of nations to do this, particularly where they lack scale, wealth or stability. Given the rise of cryptocurrencies, this book challenges the link between money and sovereignty. This a passionate, rigorous, and timely indictment of international investment law, that exposes the limits of a reformist agenda emerging from within the investment regime. -- Rene Urueña, associate professor of law, Universidad de los AndesEnrique Prieto-Ríos’ latest contribution is a thought-provoking book that challenges the global understanding of international investment law, by framing it under the prism of systemic violence and addressing its role in the perpetual domination of the developing world through international economic structures. At a time when the global status quo is under thorough examination, this work is a welcome reflection on the lingering challenges for international economic law in a society that aims to move in the direction of sustainable development and equality for all. -- Humberto Cantú Rivera, professor of law, University of MonterreyThis book convincingly contests the dominant narrative on the system of International Investment Law, and proposes a radical alternative interpretation: that this system is an instrument of systemic violence.
