Book SynopsisOver the past several centuries, John Owen’s writings on scripture have captured the attention of numerous interpreters across a relatively diverse range of disciplines. His own distinctive contribution to this doctrine was forged with a genuine fear for the on-going pre-eminence of scriptural authority in the English church firmly in view. In the face of various rival perspectives, Owen insists every Christian believer ought to be clear on the reason they believe scripture to be the word of God. Focussing on the treatise Reason of Faith (1677) in conversation with his wider theological corpus, Andrew M. Leslie studies Owen’s approach to scriptural authority and Christian faith. He argues that Owen creatively drew upon an ecumenical dogmatic and metaphysical heritage to restate and refine the traditional Reformed position on scripture’s divine authority, sensitive to developments in his own late seventeenth-century context. In particular, Leslie explores how Owen shares a growing concern to ground Christian faith in objective evidence, all-the-while ensuring that its ultimate foundation lies in the irresistible authority and truthfulness of God, mediated “in and by” the inspired text of scripture. Leslie also draws out the broader significance Owen ascribes to scripture in shaping a believer’s relationship with the Triune God, especially its vital role in their gradual transformation into the likeness or image of Christ.

This renaissance in Hooker Studies began with the publication of the Folger Library Edition of the Works of Richard Hooker. With this renaissance has come a growing recognition that it is anachronistic to classify Hooker simply as an Anglican thinker, but as yet, no generally agreed-upon alternative label, or context for his thought, has replaced this older conception; in particular, the question of Hooker's Reformed identity remains hotly contested. Given the relatively limited engagement of Hooker scholarship with other branches of Reformation and early modern scholarship to date, there is a growing recognition that Hooker must be evaluated not only against the context of English puritanism and conformism but also in light of his broad international Reformed context. At the same time, it has become clear that, if this is so, scholars of continental Reformed orthodoxy must take stock of Hooker's work as one of the landmark theological achievements of the era.This volume aims to facilitate this long-needed conversation, bringing together a wide range of scholars to consider Richard Hooker's theology within the full context of late 16th- and early 17th-century Reformed orthodoxy, both in England and on the Continent. Book SynopsisWalter Hilton (ca. 1343-1395) ist in England seit Jahrhunderten ein vielgelesener geistlicher Autor. Mit der Studie liegt erstmals eine deutschsprachige Monographie vor, die die Lëcken der ëberwiegend aus der Anglistik des angelsächsischen Sprachraums stammenden Hilton-Forschung aus theologischer Perspektive fëllt. Dazu wird nach einem ausfëhrlichen Forschungsëberblick Hiltons Leben und Werk umfassend vorgestellt und in den historischen Kontext eingeordnet. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit bietet eine Untersuchung der Theologie Hiltons. Die Studie wählt einen primär traditionsgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der ergänzt wird um mentalitäts-, kultur- und sozialgeschichtliche Perspektiven. Anhand einer Untersuchung des fër Hilton zentralen Begriffs der "Liebe (Gottesliebe, Nächstenliebe, Selbstliebe)" und der bei ihm damit eng verflochtenen Vorstellung von der Gottebenbildlichkeit/-ähnlichkeit des Menschen wird gezeigt, dass Hilton in der augustinisch-zisterziensischen Traditionslinie (Bernhard von Clairvaux, Wilhelm von St. Thierry, Richard von St. Viktor) steht. Book SynopsisIn this study Charles Raith II fills a gap in Reformation-era scholarship by analysing Calvins teaching on works and reward in light of medieval theological developments surrounding the doctrine of merit. While significant analysis has been given to Calvins doctrine of justification, its relation to sanctification, the notion of union with Christ, and the role of participation, there is as yet no sustained analysis of how these teachings are shaped by the most hostile and pervasive of his polemics, namely, his confrontation with a merit-based framework for understanding Christian salvation. This volume, however, interprets Calvins own theological constructions as contextually determined by the reigning polemics of his day. In addition, previous scholarship on these topics has largely failed to properly contextualise Calvins own thought against the background of scholastic theological developments -- developments that Calvin both accepts and rejects in the formulation of his own theology. After Merit addresses these gaps by (1) analysing Calvins tracts, scriptural commentaries and Institutes to demonstrate Calvins unique distain for the doctrine of merit among the early Reformers and the pervasiveness of this polemic within his theological program; (2) reviewing the scholastic developments surrounding the doctrine of merit from the High to Late Middle Ages as background to Calvins thought; (3) highlighting Calvins principle problems with the doctrine of merit: the competitive-causal schema between divine and human causality, merit as a basis for justification, and good works as deserving of reward; and (4) unpacking Calvins theology of justification, sanctification, the worth of works, and the role of works in salvation as an alternative to the opponents doctrine of merit. The volume concludes by reflecting on the reception of Calvins theology of works and reward in later Reformed thought.

Book SynopsisFranz Overbeck (18371905), Professor für neutestamentliche Exegese und ältere Kirchengeschichte an der Universität Basel, Freund von Friedrich Nietzsche und scharfer Kritiker der Theologie, hat in seiner letzten Zeit seinen christlichen Glauben anscheinend geleugnet. John E. Wilson zeigt, dass Overbeck die Ungläubigkeit als ironisches Spiegelbild des Schicksals der modernen Theologie gemeint hat. Bezeugt wird diese Ansicht von Overbecks Frau, Ida Rothpletz-Overbeck, die im Jahre 1920 Karl Barth mitteilte, dass ihres Mannes Betrachtungsweise ganz aus dem Innersten der Religion geflossen, doch ein objektives Gewand trage, ein Außenseiter-Gewand. Ironie wird auch in früheren Werken Overbecks nachgewiesen. Wichtig für den Nachweis des Glaubens ist die Demonstration einer von Overbeck verschwiegenen Abhängigkeit vom Philosophen F.W.J. Schelling, insbesondere von Schellings Spätphilosophie. Schon Overbecks Grundbegriff des Gegensatzes von Glauben und Wissen ist sehr wahrscheinlich von Schelling. Auch gibt es Vergleiche mit Schelling in den Begriffen von Zeit, Dauer und Urgeschichte. In gewissen Schriften entspricht Overbecks Arbeitsweise der Methode des Klemens von Alexandrien in seiner Schrift Teppiche, wie Overbeck diese Methode in seiner bekannten Schrift über die Anfänge der patristischen Literatur darstellt. Die Arbeit beginnt mit einer detaillierten Untersuchung einer noch unveröffentlichten Vorlesung aus Overbecks Zeit in Jena. Book SynopsisIn 1561, a Eucharistic controversy erupted in Danzig of the sixteenth century, sparked by disagreements on the real presence and the practical treatment of the Eucharistic elements. It was one of many inner-Lutheran struggles over the Lord's Supper in the years following the Reformation and therefore Bjorn Ole Hovda supplements the scientific studies on that topic. Different understandings of the presence of Christ during the Lord's Supper formed different religious norms of practice. On the one hand, the controversy is here analysed as a discussion on doctrine between opposing ecclesiastical factions, set in the context of reformatory theology and liturgical practice. The theological discussions had important practical and cultic implications. One the other hand -- and in contrast with the most of earlier works - the study seeks to treat with equal seriousness the wider societal and political aspects of the controversy. Hovda shows how deeply embedded the Eucharist was within broader discourses of culture, society and politics. Far from being just an abstruse ecclesiastical matter, it was a question of great sociopolitical interest and potency. The Eucharist served both as the prime symbol of Christian unity, as well as a confessional border stone between rivaling groups. Other important aspects of this wider analysis are tensions between the ordained ministry and the city council regarding authority, internal social tensions within the city, as well as the strategic interests of the city in its relations to the Polish crown, the Hanseatic league and the emerging new trading powers, among others.Through a close study of one particular controversy, light is cast on a variety of issues with relevance to the broader field of Reformation studies, especially concerning the centrality of the Eucharist.

Book SynopsisCoolhaes was a Reformed preacher, a writer of theology, a critic of the churches of his day, and an advocate of religious diversity. Coolhaes opposed much of the building up of the organization of the Reformed Church in the Northern Netherlands and Dutch Republic in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The struggle between Coolhaes and the Leiden magistrates on one side and the Leiden consistory and fellow-preacher Pieter Cornelisz on the other encapsulated the question of authority which was being asked by many. At the same time, Coolhaes theology, especially his Spiritualistic understanding of the sacraments, his Erastianism, and his views on free will made him suspicious to his Reformed colleagues. The latter of which leading him later to be labeled the forerunner of Arminius and the Remonstrants. All this eventually led to his defrocking at the synod of Middelburg and soon after to excommunication from the Reformed Church. The question this book answers, therefore, is: What sort of church would the critic Coolhaes himself have wanted to design for the new Republic?The first part of the book gives a new biographical sketch. Fresh information, sources, and un-examined works by Coolhaes himself have been uncovered since H.C. Rogges nineteenth-century biography. In the second part the ecclesiology of Coolhaes takes center stage: His ideal church would have been characterized by diversity, for diversity of religious confessions in the same society would stabilize it and diversity of views even within a confession would not harm it.

In his commentary on the Acts of the Apostles Calvin shows how Pentecost and the preaching of the Gospel gives rise to the church. For Calvin the new and peculiar aspect of Pentecost is articulated by the phrases "I will pour out" and "on all flesh" (Acts 2:17). The first phrase ("I will pour out") leads to a discussion of the Holy Spirit who leads the church and the believers by the Word and his secret guidance. All gifts flow from the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the study focuses on Calvin's view on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and on their use in church. The author argues that the gifts of the Spirit are the basis of Calvin's interpretation of Christian church. The second phrase ("on all flesh") leads to a discussion of the inclusion of the Gentiles in the church. The author treats different ecclesiologic topics of importance: He analyses the most important aspects of church that Calvin identifies in the book of Acts. His reflections are aiming at a convincing theological appreciation of the sacraments, in particular of the sacrament of baptism. By addressing Calvin's thoughts as elements of his historical context and including contemporary impulses to these issues, the author is able to present conclusive arguments for his main claim: Calvin's commentary on Acts enriches and qualifies Calvin's own systematic ecclesiology as found in his main doctrinal work, the Institutes.

Book SynopsisIn the descriptions of the life story of Anton Engelbrecht (1487-1556), a predominantly negative opinion was wrongly expressed for a long time. In this biographical study about him, originally a dissertation, Dr. Cornelis H.W. van den Berg's humanism and criticism of the Church of Rome, as well as his resistance to the development of the Church in the Reformation and his defense of religious freedom. Engelbrecht, who became auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Speyer in 1520, had to give up his office in 1524 out of Lutheran sympathy. He became a preacher in Strasbourg, where the Reformation gained the upper hand, but was expelled from his office in 1534. He returned to the Church of Rome because of a lack of better things. After leaving Strasbourg in 1544, he worked in Cologne, Nassau and Koblenz in the service of the old church. He died in Strasbourg in 1556. The book is based on extensive literature research and unpublished sources from various archives. It is historical material, the vast majority of which have not yet been used for historiography. In the Acts of the Sinister Sinodum Concerning the Upper Class (1533), Engelbrecht put his defense of religious freedom on paper. The full text will be published with notes for the first time in the appendix.

Er versteht diese Liebe wie eine göttliche Gabe, die in dem göttlichen Vertrauen verankert ist. Die Briefe sind aber auch ein Zeugnis von Spittas täglichem Leben, denn er schildert viele seiner Erfahrungen als Prediger und Seelsorger. Beindruckend wirken vor allem einige Begebenheiten die er als Gefängnisseelsorger und Garnisonprediger erlebt.Die Briefe sind auch wertvoll, weil in ihnen Sitten, Gewohnheiten und Bräuche des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Ausdruck kommen.Bemerkenswert ist vor allem Spittas Gottesglauben.
