  • How Luther Regards Moses: The Lectures on

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG How Luther Regards Moses: The Lectures on

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThough undertreated by modern scholars, Martin Luther's lectures on Deuteronomy are critical to understanding his theological development as an exegete and also the course of the Reformation in the wake of Luther's return from the Wartburg in 1522. In these lectures, Luther engages deeply with Moses, whom he sees as an author, prophet, and ruler. These three ways of regarding Moses allow Luther to forge a new approach to the Mosaic law, shaping his response to what he perceives as the evangelical legalism of Andreas Karlstadt and Thomas Müntzer. By shedding light on these exegetical principles and connecting these lectures to surrounding events, Miles Hopgood brings new clarity as to why Luther broke with Karlstadt and the nature of his dispute with Müntzer, demonstrates the importance of the Hebrew Bible in shaping Luther's mature exegesis, and opens the door for fresh perspectives not only on the events of 1521-1525 but Luther's entire career as interpreter of scripture.

Book SynopsisAndreas Osiander's teaching of Christ's indwelling in the Spirit as a form of justification for sinners was met with violent rejection by many leading Lutheran theologians of his time, who saw it as a devaluation of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. This volume of the edition series "Controversia et Confessio" documents the so-called Osianderic Controversy from 1551 on the basis of selected sources. Since Osiander's texts are already available in critical editions, the present edition concentrates primarily on the writings of the opponents, it contains, among other things, texts by Philipp Melanchthon, Matthias Flacius, Joachim Moerlin; but defenders of Osiander also have their say, such as Johannes Funck and Matthäus Vogel.

Book SynopsisThe work deals with several relevant and current questions related to church theory, sociology of religion and pastoral theology, which for the first time combined in this way lead to a "contextual pastoral theology". Following and by continuing the pastoral theological debate, pastoral theology is consistently drawn into church theory. Insofar as church theory prescribes a context-sensitive approach, pastoral theology can now be related to a specific context. On the one hand, this is rural-peripheral, on the other hand, it is about East German areas, which are described in connection with the sociological research of religion as a stable, non-denominational majority culture. So what does it mean to hold a ministry in this context? How will the situation at the focal points of the church structure develop? The analyzes show a clear picture of the current situation and the most likely further developments: A pastoral theology that only considers the pastoral ministry is too weakly positioned for the coming developments.

Book SynopsisThis volume describes, in layman's terms and yet against a well-founded scientific background, how early Christianity was transformed from a rural to a urban movement. The author describes the contours of what later became known as Christianity. This volume offers a broad description of the developmental history of early Christianity. It provides indepth information in easy-to-understand terms about how the originally rural movement called Christianity eventually became an urban entity. Particularly the "environment" of early Christianity and the social and religious structures as well as the architecture of the ancient city are described in detail. Ebner presents us with the temple and imperial cults of the time, life in the domestic household, and the role of the mystery cults along with the philosophy and important municipal mores of the day: oracles, healing cults, magic. Each chapter asks the question: How much did the Christians integrate existing structures and at what junctures did they modify them? Those junctures are the ones at which the outline of early Christianity becomes clearest.

Book SynopsisHardly any other church leader from the time of Nazi rule is as controversial as the former regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, Hans Meiser. In the 1950s / 60s he was respected as a courageous opponent of National Socialism and honored in Bavaria with the naming of streets. In recent debates on culture of memory, he fell under the verdict of being a "Nazi bishop" and an anti-Semite scientific biography of Hans Meiser shows that such one-dimensional judgments do not do justice to the historical person. Beyond the polarized debates on the culture of remembrance about the streets named after Meiser, she comprehensively examines and differentiates his church activities in the fundamental political upheavals of the 20th century from the Empire to the Weimar Republic and the Nazi regime to the young Federal Republic.

Book SynopsisThe Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth familiarized itself with Christian Hebraism in the first half of the 16th century. "In Search of 'the Genuine Word of God'" sketches out the process in three chapters. The first one deals with the development of modern Hebrew studies in Western Europe, the second gives an account of the academic and religious level of Hebrew scholarship in the Commonwealth in the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, and the third is devoted to Polish translations of the Hebrew Bible, which were the most significant consequences of the reception of the West-European Christian Hebraism in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Renaissance. Knowledge of Hebrew would be spread in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through personal contacts of magnates and church dignitaries with the Western European Hebrew experts, through Jewish converts teaching Semitic languages, through foreign studies at European universities and through books.

Book SynopsisEcstatic prophecy is characteristic of the prophetic movement (Montanism) that emerged in Christian circles in the second half of the second century. The so called Montanists spread and diversified quickly within the congregations of the Roman Empire and provoked immediate opposition. One such early opponent of Montanism can be reconstructed from the 48th chapter of Epiphanius' Panarion. This opponent polemicises against the Montanist charismatic demands. The Montanist own arguments can also be inferred from the opponent's argumentation, as well as seven oracles spoken by Maximilla and Montanus. This study identifies Epiphanius' source as the earliest reconstructed source on Montanism. It is argued that the author of this source is the apologist Miltiades. In addition, Montanus' and Maximilla's oracles are made the subject of a detailed interpretation, and their biblical background is highlighted.

Book SynopsisThe emancipation of the natural sciences from religion was a gradual affair during the last four centuries. Initially many of the leading scientists were churchmen indicating a symbiosis between faith and reason. Due to the increasing specialisation in the sciences this close connection came to an end often leading to antagonism and mutual suspicion. This book traces this historical development with its twists and turns in both Europe and North America. It depicts the major players in this story and outlines their specific contributions. The main focus is on the 19th and 20th centuries with figures such as Darwin and Hodge, but also Beecher and Abbott in the 19th century. In the 20th century the narrative starts with Karl Barth and moves all the way to Hawking and Tipler. Special attention is given to representatives from North America, Great Britain, and Germany. In conclusion important issues are presented in the present-day dialogue between theology and the natural sciences. The issue of design and fine-tuning is picked up, and advances in brain research. Finally technological issues are assessed and the status of medicine as a helpmate for life is discussed. An informative and thought-provoking book. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Synod of Dort was an international conference of Reformed leaders held in 16181619 in the Netherlands. It is famous for its so-called Five Points of Calvinism which were a refutation of the Five Remonstrances of the followers of Arminius on the nature of divine grace and the perseverance of believers unto eternal salvation. As an international Synod, Dort made a significant impact on the definition and development of Reformed orthodoxy for decades and centuries to come. In countries such as France, the Canons of Dort served as a confessional boundary for Reformed orthodoxy and all pastors had to swear allegiance to them. Despite its tremendous influence, the decisions of the Synod of Dort remain a mystery to many today and are subject to caricatures and stereotypes of an extreme divine determinism and the hijacking of Calvins pure theology. This volume seeks to shed light on various aspects of the Synod of Dort in order to inform the contemporary reader of its proper historical and theological context and its experiential emphases. Some leading scholars of post-Reformation Reformed thought and the Synod have contributed essays to this work. The book is divided into three major sections designed to deliver a better overall perspective on the Synod. The first section focuses on the reception of the Canons of Dort among the Reformed churches in France where they were accepted and enforced. However, there were some internal questions, concerns, and even objections to the canons which are detailed in these chapters. The second section hones in on the theology of the Canons of Dort with particular attention to the doctrines of election and the nature of the atonement. This section also includes an important chapter on the relationship between church and state, always a central concern in the Reformation and post-Reformation eras. Finally, the third major section looks at how believers could apply the theology to their daily lives and devotion to Christ. These chapters indicate that this was not merely a theological conference, but one that had practical and experiential implications as well. The book concludes with a chapter on the application of the Synod for believers today.

Jahrhundert.

Book SynopsisAny attempt to interpret the personality of Joshua in the book that bears his name generates conflicting interpretations of what he represents. In the view of some commentators, the protagonist of the narrative cuts the image of "another Moses"; whereas for others, he is the "prototype of kings, particularly in the mode of Josiah"; still, for some others, he is the ideal successor, in his role as the successor of Moses, and a model for the leaders of Israel. In reality, these multiple positions or theses diverge only on the surface level. In fact, each one retains its significance in what we could refer to as the "the literary frame of reference," that is, Gen.-Josh. (the Hexateuch); Josh.-2 Kings (the Deuteronomistic History); and Gen-2 Kings (or the Great History of Israel). The question remains, however: considering the book of Joshua in the literary frame of reference itself, who is the Joshua, the protagonist? Paul Béré argues that, viewed from the perspective of its internal logic, the Joshua narrative constructs the figure of its protagonist by portraying him as the "second" Servant of Yhwh, in parallel with the figure of the first, namely, Moses.Furthermore, new evidence shows that the crossing of the Jordan (Jos 3-4) provides the protagonist a singular opportunity to manifest to the people his unique relationship with Yhwh. This threshold, consequently, functions as a decisive space where the personalities of both Moses and Joshua are demarcated and constructed on either side of the Jordan: Moses in the east and Joshua in the west, i.e., the Promised Land. On the part of Joshua this critical space allows him to assume several functions, seven of which are identified in this study. At the end of the analysis, this study calls for further investigation into the social and historical factors that ground the twinning of the two characters of Moses and Joshua.

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis2010 marks the 450th anniversary of the death of Philipp Melanchthon. Melanchthon was one of the first and foremost reformists. Unlike Luther, Zwingli and Calvin he lived through and was involved in the entire Reformation period, from the beginnings in 1517 with Luther's 95 theses to the end with the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. He also wrote the first textbook of Protestant theology, the most important of all Protestant confessions of faith, the Augsburg Confession, playing a major role in the subsequent development of Protestant schools and universities. He was an irenic, a believer in ecumenism and devoted to prayer. In this volume Martin H. Jung acquaints us with the heretofore wrongly relatively unfamiliar reformer. The author provides a fascinating and lively look at the life of Melanchthon, the events of his time and the role he played in them. This is more than just a biography: The entire history of the Protestant Reformation is laid out against the background of his life, with particular emphasis on the role Luther, Zwingli and Calvin played. Besides well-known themes such as humanism and the first textbook of Protestant theology penned by Melanchthon, the volume touches on less well-known and surprising new insights into Melanchthon's relationship with the Jews and Moslems. Further, new light is shed on Melanchthon's wife, Katharina Krapp. In addition, the author draws the line from the past to the present. 2010 is an anniversary year for Melanchthon, and 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation itself. This volume is an excellent way to prepare for that event.

Book SynopsisHow did the Baptist Church come to be the largest Protestant church in the United States and the largest independent church in Germany? This volume is the first German work to provide an answer to this question. It recounts the early development of the Baptist movement in Europe, the United States and Germany, and addresses in particular the historical and social background as well as the specific theological focus this movement assumed. Themes such as freedom of belief and conscience, the separation of church and state, and a direct democratic understanding of church structure are also treated as well as the development of the Baptist Church among the Blacks, which presented the spiritual and organizational background for the civil rights movement under Martin Luther King.

These contributions, written by scholars from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, and Hungary, show that the influence of Philip Melanchthon on Reformed theology, spirituality and education can hardly be overestimated. This is not only true for Germany, but also for Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, and Hungary, where Melanchthon maintained a large network of scholars, educators, and church leaders. He was not only the "Teacher of Germany", but also the "Teacher of Europe".

  • Covenant, Causality, and Law: A Study in the Theology of Wolfgang Musculus

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Covenant, Causality, and Law: A Study in the Theology of Wolfgang Musculus

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisJordan J. Ballor takes as his point of departure the doctrine of the covenant as it appears in the theology of the prominent second-generation reformer, Wolfgang Musculus (1497-1563), who is perhaps the earliest Reformed theologian to give the topic of the covenant a separate and distinct treatment in a collection of theological commonplaces. Musculus' teaching on the covenant is characterized by the important distinction he makes between general and special covenants, and it is rooted in his exegetical work on the book of Genesis. Where Musculus' Loci communes demonstrate his antispeculative, soteriologically focused and pastorally driven approach, his exegesis provides fulsome guidance in the study of Scripture. This examination of Musculus' views on covenant and related doctrines is followed by explorations concerning causality and metaphysics. It concludes with considerations on law and social order. This book is the first full-scale study to place Musculus' theology within its broader intellectual context and to focus on Musculus' theology as found both in his Loci communes and in his extensive and voluminous exegetical work. Musculus' positions on doctrines related to covenant, causality and law reveal the eclecticism of Reformed reception of medieval traditions. The final section of this study places Musculus within the later development of Reformed orthodoxy in the 16th and 17th centuries, concluding that Wolfgang Musculus is a significant and often-overlooked figure worthy of further consideration.

Book SynopsisUnderstanding my own faith: a desire which many people have. But at the same time a lot of Christians are not able to explain their faith because there is a lack of understanding. The Heidelberg catechism from 1563 was relevant for a lot of Christians in earlier times, but today it seems to have lost its significance. Georg Plasger combines both things: The understanding of faith for people of the 21st Century with the help of the Catechism of the 16th Century. The Catechism itself is constructed in dialogue - as well is the book. Plasger reflects basic questions and issues of Christian faith in fourteen chapters. He thereby shows that the Heidelberg Catechism is helpful to understanding ones faith. Questions like "How can we really speak of God? " and "Is man bad? " as well as key issues (including creation, Jesus Christ, Church, Holy Spirit, sacraments, hope and prayer) are considered. The result is a modern doctrine of faith.

Book SynopsisZacharias Ursinus is widely known as the main author of the Heidelberg Catechism (1563). In this thesis Wagner-Peterson analyses for the first time the late period of Zacharias Ursinus' theology on the basis of his lecture on Isaiah. The author focusses on the methodology, the hermeneutics and theology implicated in this lecture. The results are compared to 16th century commentaries and theological concepts. A comparative study of Ursinus' earlier writings illustrates a development of his theological concept. Wagner-Peterson thus offers important new insights into exegesis and theology in the period of confessionalism. The older Ursinus appears as a reformed theological teacher, whose intention was to school his students in a life of continuous study of scriptural doctrine. The study of and the obedience to biblical doctrine was essential for Ursinus as a school for living and dying according to God's providential will.

Book SynopsisThe thirteen essays in this volume were all originally presented at international conferences or in public lectures. They address three main areas of inquiry, all of which, in one way or another, are of key importance in early modern historical discourse and theological thinking: (1) the theological diversity and debates within the Reformed tradition in the sixteenth century and beyond; (2) Peter Martyr Vermiglis noteworthy contribution to Reformed ecclesiology and biblical exegesis; and (3) the later development and enrichment of Reformed thought on both sides of the Atlantic. They show that the Reformed tradition was neither monolithic, nor monochrome, nor immutable, but evolved in different, if interrelated, patterns and directions. Book SynopsisThis work offers a comprehensive examination of how Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) -- a great philologist, pedagogue, and theologian of the Reformation -- used Greek patristic sources throughout his extensive career. The Cappadocian Fathers (here identified as Gregory Thaumaturgus, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory Nazianzen, and Gregory of Nyssa) were received through the medieval period to be exemplary theologians. In the hands of Melanchthon, they become tools to articulate the Evangelical-Lutheran theological position on justification by grace through faith alone, the necessity of formal education for theologians in literature and the natural sciences, the freedom of the will under divine grace, exemplars for bishops and even princes, and (not least) as models of Attic Greek grammar and biblical exegesis for university students. The book is organized around Melanchthon's use of Cappadocian works against his opponents: Roman Catholic, the Radical Reformers, the Reformed, and in Intra-Lutheran controversies. The author places Melanchthon within the context of the patristic reception of his time. Moreover, an appendix offers a sketch of the "Cappadocian canon" of the sixteenth century, with notation of the particular sources for Melanchthon's knowledge and the references to these works in modern scholarly sources. While often accused by his critics (past and present) of being arbitrary in his selection of patristic authorities, too free with his quotations, and too anxious for theological harmony, this work shows Melanchthon "at work" to reveal the consistent manner and Evangelical-Lutheran method by which he used patristic material to proclaim "Christ and his benefits" throughout his multifaceted career.

Book SynopsisText in German. On 19 October 1512, Martin Luther received his doctorate of theology under the chairmanship of Andreas Bodenstein of Karlstadt. Throughout his life, Luther remained tied to the Universityof Wittemberg. The Reformation movement was initially driven by and through his concern with academic issues, which also from the outset pertained to the relationship between theology and the other sciences. The contributors to this volume describe the relationship between faith and reason or ratio and pietas which was assessed in different ways in the Reformation, described by some as oppositional and by others as harmonious. Moreover, reformers referred back to medieval philosophical and theological points of view to relate reason with belief. The way in which this was done was definitive, for example for the establishment of universities, relations between science and the Church and in matters concerning the Bible and preaching. The lectures printed in this volume address the question of the relationship between the Reformation and reason before a European, interdenominational horizon.

Book SynopsisDeath and dying were not in the main focus of the denominational conflicts of the 16th century. However, pious literature covered these topics again and again, not only before the Reformation, but after it as well. Here, certain denominational differences are clearly visible. Partly, these differences consist in the use of genres: For example, funeral sermons are an often used genre among Lutherans, while they are much rarer in the Reformed tradition. Similar differences can be observed concerning epitaphs. In Roman Catholic areas, funeral sermons and epitaphs are common in the 16th century, too; but their religious function is often a different from the one in Lutheranism. Beyond such interdenominational differences, there are also interesting continuities and connections which the contributors of the volume analyze. For example, there is a certain continuity between 16th century Lutheran funeral sermons and the late medieval tradition of ars moriendi. The volume contains papers presented at the Second RefoRC Conference in Oslo in 2012, and is characterized by a multiconfessional and multidisciplinary approach, with contributions from Church History, Art History, Archaeology, History of Literature and Cultural History. Within a field of research dominated by specialized contributions (e.g. on ars moriendi traditions or on specific traditions of funeral monuments and funeral sermons), the broad approach of this volume may further stimulate to comparative and cross-confessional reflection.

Book SynopsisIt has often been noted that the Protestant Reformation of the early sixteenth century witnessed a revived interest in the scriptural notions of prophets and prophecy. Drawing from both late medieval apocalyptic expectations of the immanent end of the world and from a humanist revival of biblical studies, the prophet appeared to many as a suitable role model for the Protestant preacher. A prominent proponent of this prophetic model was the Swiss theologian and church leader Heinrich Bullinger (15041575). This study by Daniël Timmerman presents the first in-depth investigation of Bullingers concept of prophecy and his understanding of the prophetic office. It also engages with the history of the Zurich institute for the study of the Scriptures, which has become widely known as the "Prophezei".
