  • Music Making and Civic Imagination: A Holistic

Intellect Books Music Making and Civic Imagination: A Holistic

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn a world facing multiple existential crises, music might be seen as little more than a distraction. However, in this synthesis of ideas developed over a decade, a timely re-appraisal of the potential of musicing for human flourishing is presented, emphasising its role in the history of human evolution alongside its potential as a resource for sustainable development. A holistic philosophy of music is outlined which recognises the complex web of meaning which spreads across complementary musical dimensions of performance and participation, whilst emphasising the ‘paramusical’ benefits which arise from both. Highlighting the notion that the social bonds which arise from musicing share much of the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment and love, musicing is presented as a resource with the potential for facilitating ethical human connection. The humanistic values which are thereby materialised during musicing – love, reciprocity and justice – form the experiential grounds for inhabiting alternative social realities. The book addresses how such a holistic philosophy of music might be implemented in practice, drawing on the author’s professional praxis as a performer, educator, community musician, composer and researcher, in particular their experience of musician education at Sage Gateshead, Royal College of Music and Trinity-Laban Conservatoire in the UK.Trade ReviewCamlin has an uncanny ability to uncover and make visible the fundamental truths about musicing that we intuit from practice. Camlin’s quest to understand the phenomenon of musicing has led him to read widely from many different disciplines, which moves us towards a consilient understanding of why music is of such tremendous value now, more than ever. This book is a tremendous contribution to the discourse on what it means 'to music' and what music can mean for the survival of our species, and the planet. -- Melissa Forbes, Associate Professor in Contemporary Singing, University of Southern Queensland, on Giabal and Jarowair Country, AustraliaTable of ContentsForeword Acknowledgements PART 1 INTRODUCTION 1. Book SynopsisHow to teach Composition in the secondary classroom presents 50 creative ideas to support every aspect of composing in secondary schools. The ideas are concise, easy to implement and tackle everything from starters and plenaries, inspiration and project ideas to composition techniques, technology and assessment. This practical handbook provides fresh and inspiring ways to invigorate composition in the classroom and beyond.Trade ReviewThis book is bursting at the seams with practical, tried-and-tested classroom activities for supporting students in their composing development. The ideas are simple to read and offer enough flexibility to be adaptable to any situation. If you’re looking for support with composition teaching, this resource will be your go-to! ~ Dr Kirsty Devaney, Composer & Music Education Researcher Shapey is a veteran of the classroom, and this shines through in the text. Each of the 50 individual approaches are carefully laid out with starter activities, plenaries, learning outcomes, and, perhaps most excitingly, reference tracks… 50 inspiring ideas is much more than a collection of composition briefs. The book presents a carefully scaffolded plan for developing learners’ creative faculties, musical ear, and, through these skills, knowledge of theory and instrumentation. Shapey is placing creativity back at the heart of the music curriculum, where it belongs… Shapey’s ideas are crafted to engage and inspire students, embed intertextual discussions, and, perhaps most importantly, produce compositions which learners can be proud of, as well as ticking those omnipresent assessment objectives… This text is destined to become a well-thumbed addition to my collection, and one which my students will enjoy as much as I do. ~ Dale Wills, Music Teacher Magazine This is a great book for any music teacher, containing a wide range of inspiring ideas to get your class composing. Ideas include authentic composing briefs, practical information on using rhythm and harmony techniques and sections on how to write and develop a melody. Many of the ideas can be used or adapted for KS 2 too and will prepare children for composition at KS 3 and beyond. This book is a mine of useful information! ~ Kay Charlton, Music educator/composer

However, there reaches a stage when you want more thanjust chords and this book will fill in the gaps and launch you into a seriesof well structured 'lessons' that introduce you to finger picking, tab andallowing you to improvise in a range of styles. This book does not launchstraight into chords as most ukulele books do but gently eases you intoplaying single notes with advice for dampening the strings – technicaladvice etc. I like it!,Ukulele Magic is the book we've been waiting for to help us deliver whole-class ukulele tuition in Lewisham schools. The pace is right, the video clips are extremely helpful, the design is clear and the music is catchy and written in an interesting variety of styles.,I'm very impressed with it, as are the children and teachers I'm working with. It makes a massive difference to have such a rich, well-presented resource as the e-book version, which I use in every lesson. It's been a massive help to have a book targeted at wider opps teaching and has definitely improved my ukulele delivery.,I use it for my small groups. Other teachers in Lewisham use it for wider opps. Everyone I have spoken to about it loves it.

It covers basics andsimple melodies - the second volume introduces more complexity on the same concept, then the third one should help pianists to play different rhythms with each hand.
