Chelsea Green Publishing Co Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals,
Book SynopsisHerbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a five-volume set that serves as a comprehensive, practical reference manual for herbalists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Dr. Jill Stansbury draws on her decades of clinical experience and her extensive research to provide an unparalleled range of herbal formulas. Organized by body system, each volume includes hundreds of formulas to treat common health conditions, as well as formulas that address specific energetic or symptomatic presentations, including Dr. Stansbury’s own formulas, formulas from herbal folklore, and formulas from Traditional Chinese Medicine. For each formula, Dr. Stansbury offers a brief explanation of how the selected herbs address the specific condition. The book offers many sidebars and user-friendly lists—helping readers quickly choose which herbs are best for specific presentations—and details traditional uses of both western herbs and traditional Asian herbs and formulas that are readily available in the United States. Volume 2 focuses on circulation and respiration, offering formulas and supporting information for treating a wide range of vascular, pulmonary, and respiratory conditions, including angina, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, Reynaud’s syndrome, anemia, coughs, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema. Each chapter includes a materia medica section that describes individual herbs with tips on their properties, modes of action, and the specific symptoms each plant best addresses. These formularies are also a tutorial for budding herbalists on the sophisticated art of fine-tuning the precision of an herbal formula for the constitution and overall health condition of an individual patient, rather than a basic diagnosis. The text aims to teach via example, helping clinicians develop their own intuition and ability to create effective herbal formulas. Volume 1 (Digestion and Elimination) debuted the set in February 2018. Volume 3 (Endocrinology) will be published in May 2019. Volumes 4 (Neurology, Pyschiatry, and Pain Management) and 5 (Immunology, Orthopedics, and Otolarnygology) will be published in 2020.Trade Review“Herbal Formularies For Health Professionals is a gift to all healthcare practitioners seeking to heal their patients through a natural medicine approach. The expertise of Dr. Stansbury is extraordinary. This text is not a simple guide; it is a fascinating educational read and treatment formulary that is practical and evidence-based.”—Mimi Guarneri, MD, president, Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine“There are many herb books, but few address the fine points of clinical herbal prescribing. To remedy this deficiency, Dr. Jill Stansbury, ND, has written perhaps the best herbal formulary since the days of the renowned Eclectic physicians. Her first book in this set of five volumes covers the digestive and eliminatory systems including the liver and gallbladder, urinary system, and skin. Each section and page clearly shows the skill, experience, and expertise of the author and will help even the seasoned naturopathic physician or herbalist improve their clinical practice and success in treating their patients.”—David Winston, RH (AHG), dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies; founder of Herbal Therapeutics Research Library“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume I is simply the best text available for the modern clinical practice of Western herbal medicine. It’s likely to become an instant classic and essential book for any student of herbal medicine, as well as seasoned practitioners. Dr. Stansbury includes copious examples from her extensive clinical work with many kinds of patients to help students and practitioners alike find healing solutions to common ailments and symptoms.”—Christopher Hobbs, PhD, LAc, fourth-generation herbalist“Fabulous! This book is an outstanding resource. Dr. Jill Stansbury, one of the most respected herbalists and naturopathic doctors of our time, has created an up-to-date formulary that combines the best of traditional formulas with modern research and her own extensive clinical experience. This impeccably researched volume, the first in a set of five, is a master reference tool for herbalists, doctors, and other health care professionals seeking to create precise formulas based on the individual, not on the diagnosis.”—Rosemary Gladstar, herbalist; founder of Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center“Esteemed clinical herbalist and naturopathic physician Jill Stansbury shares thirty years of experience with botanical medicines from all over the globe in this incredibly helpful text, which is part guidebook, part materia medica, and part recipe-based formulary, laced with an enthusiastic appreciation of all things herbal. In short, Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a well-researched and beautifully presented herbal resource. Because of its easy readability, logical organization, and wealth of information, it is an asset for students, newly graduated herbalists and doctors, and seasoned practitioners alike. It will no doubt be a frequently referenced text in the library of any herbal practitioner.”—Timothy Miller, ND, MAc, LAc, RA, founder of Naturopathic CE“Accomplished naturopathic physician Dr. Jill Stansbury brings her vast clinical experience, deep knowledge, commitment, and passion for herbs to this exciting modern-day formulary. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is an extensive reference guide to the creation of classic herbal formulas using traditional herbal healing wisdom as well as modern science. This text should be a foundational part of herbal education. There is no other formulary as comprehensive or as accessible to the clinician; this book truly fills an empty space in the list of current herbal clinical education publications.”—Dr. Mary Bove, ND, author of Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants“Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 delves deeply into herbal formulas for digestive, liver, urinary, and skin problems, along with descriptions and, where known, causes of these problems. In a chapter on the art of formulation, Jill Stansbury outlines example cases and provides appropriate formulas for each. Her considerations are fascinating. This refreshing work will be highly useful for both serious students and practitioners.”—Henriette Kress, herbalist; founder of Henriette’s Herbal Homepage“Dr. Jill Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a formidable accomplishment and historic contribution to the rapidly developing field of botanical medicine. In the tradition of the great pharmacopeias of the Eclectic and naturopathic physicians, this comprehensive manual contains a wealth of concisely detailed herbal formulations and easily readable contemporary research that address both the widespread illnesses of our time as well as specialized and less common conditions. “Herbal Formularies is practical and immediately usable for anyone interested in the applications of herbal medicine. Its depth will satisfy senior clinicians, academic researchers, and medical educators, while its accessibility will greatly further the education of students and the serious lay person.”—David Crow, LAc, founder of Floracopeia Aromatic Treasures“Reading Dr. Stansbury’s formulary has quickly supported us in updating and filling in gaps in our dispensary stock to better serve our customers. I believe this book will similarly inform the dispensing practices of practitioners of all experience levels looking to glean insight from one of the most experienced herbalist physicians in the United States. “I’m thrilled to see this first of five volumes of herbal internal medical formularies being released to a wide audience. Previous efforts have been predominately geared toward licensed acupuncturists or naturopathic physicians, but these volumes will speak to a broader, dynamic audience. Clinicians will be surprised to discover how much groundwork has already been laid for future generations of health care professionals. This book offers mature templates for improvisation to treat a myriad of complex health conditions with botanical medicines."—Benjamin Zappin, LAc, herbalist; cofounder of Five Flavors Herbs“Formulation is one of the key elements of a clinical herbalist’s practice. It is also an aspect that intimidates many practitioners, especially those newer to herbal medicine. Jill Stansbury’s book is a valuable guide to formulation that will lend a strong guiding hand for herbalists of all skill levels. Her language is clear, instructive, and easy to read. She gives multiple examples drawn from her extensive practice, and her explanations offer direction for working with individual patients. Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 1 is a comprehensive and practical book that I will recommend to my herbal students.”—7Song, director of Northeast School of Botanical Medicine; Director of Holistic Medicine, Ithaca Free ClinicTable of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: The Art of Herbal Formulation Chapter 2: Creating Herbal Formulas for Vascular and Pulmonary Conditions Chapter 3: Creating Herbal Formulas for Respiratory Conditions Acknowledgments Botanical Names to Common Names Common Names to Botanical Names Notes Glossary Index

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Natural Remedies for Inflammation
Book SynopsisFrom aspirin and ibuprofen to antihistamines and cortisone, anti-inflammatory drugs are now the top-selling pharmaceuticals in the world. But daily use of these powerful drugs comes with a price: side effects, many of which can lead to other chronic conditions and the further use of medications. In this practical guide to natural remedies for inflammation, naturopath Christopher Vasey explores 38 anti-inflammatory herbs, such as laurel, basil, turmeric, and devil's claw, as well as other natural substances, such as propolis and fish oil. He explains which conditions each addresses most effectively, proper dosage, and the best methods of ingestion. Vasey explains how, like fever, inflammation is a defensive reaction of the body and also carries out a cleansing process, which natural remedies support but pharmaceuticals can destabilize by contributing more toxins to the internal terrain. He examines many of the most common inflammation-related ailments--such as allergies, asthma, conjunctivitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, cystitis, tendonitis, arthritis, eczema, and sciatica--and explains which medicinal plant or food supplement is best suited to safely alleviate unpleasant symptoms while helping the body complete the healing the inflammation was initiated to perform. Revealing the important role of omega-3s in defending the body against inflammation and reducing the damage caused by chronic inflammation, Vasey explores what foods are rich in these key molecules, how much must be eaten to defend the body, and what omega-3 supplements are most suited to your body's needs. The author also examines how to deacidify the body, as acids have an inflammatory effect, as well as how to use hydrotherapy to calm inflammation.Trade Review“This book contains very valuable information. Inner Traditions Bear and Company The Sacred Herbs of Spring: Magical, Healing, and
Book SynopsisA practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine and the sacred herbs of spring • Explores the identification, harvest, and safe practical and ritual use of more than 90 plants and trees • Details rituals for honoring the traditional Gods and Goddesses of spring, such as the Goddess Chloris, the Goddess Flora, and the Daghda • Reveals which herbs to use for luck, magic, protection, purification, abundance, fertility, and love as well as the herbs of the Faeries and Elves and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and for contacting the High Gods and Goddesses Marking the beginning of the Celtic year, the festival of Beltaine, May Day, is a celebration of the return of spring and the promise of summer, a time for love magic and spells for increasing the fertility of the land and the plants that grow upon it. Like Samhain in autumn, Beltaine is also a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world is at its most transparent and the ancestors and denizens of the Otherworld easily interact with the world of humans. Presenting a practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine, Ellen Evert Hopman examines the plants, customs, foods, drinks, and rituals of May Day across many cultures. Discussing the gods and goddesses of spring, Hopman details the rituals for honoring them as well as traditional poems, prayers, incantations, folk rhymes, and sayings related to this time of year. She explores well dressing, the custom of honoring the source of sacred water by decorating a well. She also looks at Beltaine’s association with Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht, which fall the preceding evening. In the extensive section on the sacred plants of Beltaine, the author explores more than 90 herbs and trees, offering spells, rituals, and recipes alongside their medicinal healing uses. She reveals sacred woods suitable for the Beltaine fires and Beltaine flowers for rituals and spells. She explores herbs for luck, magic, purification, abundance, and love; herbs for protection, such as bindweed, elder, and St. John’s wort; herbs of the Faeries and Elves, such as burdock and dandelion; and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and contacting the high gods and goddesses. She also details the identification, harvest, and preparation of seasonal edible herbs, greens, mushrooms, and flowers. Woven throughout with mystical tales of folk, Faery, and sacred herbs, this guide offers each of us practical and magical ways to connect with Nature, the plant kingdom, and the Spirits that surround us in the season of spring.Trade Review“Anyone who loves green magic, green medicine, and green hearts will delight in Ellen Evert Hopman’s newest book, The Sacred Herbs of Spring. The Celtic year was (and still is) divided into the dark half and the light half, and so this pair of books gives us information to help us work through the entire year." * Barbara Ardinger, Witches & Pagans Magazine *"Hopman's previous book, The Sacred Herbs of Samhain, keeps popping up in my Amazon suggestions and I've seen it reviewed and posted about numerous times over the past couple of months. I am certainly interested in the book and when I was given the opportunity to review her newest book, The Sacred Herbs of Spring, I jumped on the opportunity. I was not disappointed! Hopman is a Druid and master herbalist, and it shows in her writing. Each chapter is filled with herbs and plants scared to Beltane based upon what you can use them for. Much like my herbarium posts, Hopman discussed each plant's folklore and their medicinal uses. For many of the plants, she also includes delicious recipes for culinary dishes as well as herbal remedies. Each description also comes with an extensive warning, allowing the reader to make an informed choice as to which plants they may or may not want to use. Furthermore, Hopman includes extensive research and cites her sources faithfully. As a scholar, I greatly appreciated her attention to detail." * Willow, Flying the Hedge: The Path of a Hedgewitch *"I recommend this book to anyone with a Wiccan or Pagan inclination, as well as anyone wanting to live a more natural lifestyle that includes using local natural products. The author, Ellen Evert Hopman, is the author of this volume as well as The Sacred Herbs of Samhain. If it is similar to this volume, it is well worth adding to your library." * Lalia Wilson, Tarot Reflections *"...The author provides a wealth of information on celebrating an honoring this sabbat. The veil between the worlds is thinnest not just on Samhain but Beltaine as well. Within the pages are rituals, recipes, offerings celebrating spring. Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer, Revised
Book Synopsis'Seasoned and novice growers alike will find a mother lode of information and wisdom packed into this gem of a book!' Nancy Phillips, author of The Herbalist’s Way *Updated with new information about herb dryers and construction, soil fertility, growing cannabis, and more In the first edition of The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer, authors Jeff and Melanie Carpenter presented a comprehensive seed-to-bottle guide for aspiring and experienced growers alike, from basic business considerations to planting and propagation to creating value-added products. Now they’re back with a revised and updated edition, sharing the lessons they’ve learned throughout their twenty-five years of operating a medicinal herb farm that prizes quality over quantity. The Carpenters offer their insights and tips on every aspect of herb farming, including: Size and scale considerations Data management for profit maximization The herbal marketplace and choosing which herbs to grow Field and bed preparation and planting, including building soil fertility Plant-positive weed, pest, and disease control Harvest and post-harvest processing, including scalable dryer construction Value-added products and marketing A new chapter on growing cannabis And much more! The Carpenters make the case that growing organic medicinal herbs is not only viable and profitable, but also an important step for improving the ecological health of farmland, taking pressure off of wild medicinal plant populations, and increasing biodiversity. While local foodways are more often the focus of attention, local medicine ways are equally critical and in need of restoration. The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is a one-of-a-kind resource, complete with detailed profiles of 50 medicinal herbs and over 200 colour photographs. Whether you’re looking to grow an herb farm from the ground up, incorporate medicinal plants on an existing farm, or add tools to your belt as a seasoned grower, you’ll find the information you need in this volume. '[A] beautiful and informative book . . . A dirt-smudged copy should be within easy reach of every home gardener or farmer who grows—or wants to grow—medicinal plants.' Michael McGuffin, President, American Herbal Products AssociationTrade Review“This new edition of The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is a must-have for anyone interested in herb cultivation. The knowledge Jeff and Melanie share is incredibly important for the future of the botanical industry as production in the U.S. continues to grow. They detail each step along the way, from choosing the right botanicals to grow on your land to post-harvest processing. I really appreciate the applied intention and the thoughtfulness involved in growing herbs that Jeff and Melanie transmit. This is a resource that aspiring and experienced botanical farmers alike should keep on hand.”—Nate Brennan, purchasing and sales manager, Pacific Botanicals “Rooted in years of direct experience and a deep love and respect for the healing plants, this book is packed full of practical, on-the-ground herbal farming information. It is an essential guide for young and experienced farmers alike who are interested in growing or integrating medicinal herbs into their farm. We need more caring, respectful, and knowledgeable medicinal herb farmers like Jeff and Melanie.”—Deb Soule, herbalist and biodynamic gardener; founder of Avena Botanicals “The revised edition of The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer goes beyond a traditional herb farming manual, serving as a guide for cultivating not only herbs but also a sense of community and self-sufficiency. Jeff’s emphasis on sustainable practices, ethical harvesting, and mindful consumption inspires readers to embrace a harmonious relationship with the environment and rediscover the profound healing potential of herbs. Whether you’re a novice herb enthusiast or an experienced farmer looking to deepen your knowledge, The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is an invaluable resource that will awaken your senses, nourish your soul, and guide you on an enriching journey toward organic herb farming success.”—Cee Stanley, CEO of Green Heffa Farms“I could almost smell the herbs and feel the soil when I picked up and opened this book. It is full of practical and helpful information, pictures, and guidance for any farmer who wants to know and grow medicinal herbs organically. All of the new information is great, especially the section on constructing and performing herb drying. Too often I have seen farmers grow a good crop but lessen its value with improper post-harvest handling techniques, especially drying incorrectly. Thanks Melanie and Jeff for taking the time to put down in black and white what farmers need to know to be successful. The first edition on my shelf is a bit worn and torn, so this revised edition gives me and readers even more reason to dig in deeper to learn what it takes to supply top-quality medicinal herbs in today’s market.”—Edward J Fletcher, Owner/Operator Native Botanicals, Inc. “The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is an invaluable resource for anyone growing medicinal plants on a small, medium, and large-scale. In addition to details about everything from writing a vision statement to developing a business plan and managing weeds, Jeff and Melanie Carpenter share the reasons behind the decisions they have made, the lessons learned from good and bad decisions, and their advice based on what they have learned. The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is also essential reading for anyone using herbal products to understand what it takes to cultivate and process high quality herbs so that the products made with these herbs are truly the ecological medicine—better for the plants, for people, and the planet—that they are promised to be. The Carpenters demonstrate how the vision of wholeness and healing that is at the heart of herbal medicine guides all the decisions, large and small, that they make on their farm. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.”—Ann Armbrecht, PhD; author, The Business of Botanicals; director, Sustainable Herbs Program “Jeff and Melanie Carpenter give me hope for the future of herb farming. In this book, they generously share very useful experience-based information and lessons learned, which will help young prospective herb farmers to avoid pitfalls and plan for an economically viable and appropriately scaled operation for sustainable production. Read this book before you start up!”—Josef Brinckmann, vice president of sustainability, Traditional Medicinals “Finally, a book to recommend to the increasing number of organic farmers who are looking to grow medicinal herb crops. This inspiring handbook provides the quality and depth of information that only comes from years of first-hand experience. Having begun our own herb-growing and herbal-product manufacture thirty-five years ago, I am completely impressed with the comprehensive breadth of topics and business wisdom that the Carpenters have so generously shared.”—Sara Katz, cofounder, Herb Pharm, and board president, United Plant Savers “Bullseye! Jeff and Melanie Carpenter nail it in addressing the needs of today’s medicinal herb grower. In a friendly, easy-to-read style, the information in The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer is straightforward and comprehensive, benefitting beginning and experienced farmers alike.”—Richard Wiswall, author, The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook “With this beautiful and informative book, Jeff and Melanie Carpenter share the knowledge they have gathered as they have realized their vision over the last fifteen years on their 10-acre farm in Vermont. The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer serves as a training manual to support US domestic production of high-quality medicinal herbs. A dirt-smudged copy should be within easy reach of every home gardener or farmer who grows—or wants to grow—medicinal plants.”—Michael McGuffin, president, American Herbal Products Association “Many of the medicinal herbs used in the herbal industry are still imported, even though we have ideal conditions as landowners and farmers to fulfil the growing demand. United Plant Savers’ motto, ‘conservation through cultivation,’ is a way in which we can take demand off of wild-harvested native medicinals and also stimulate regional sources for a dynamic and growing market. This book could not be more timely. We need domestic herb farmers not only to supply a growing demand for herbal medicine but also as a critical component to ensuring an abundant supply of American medicinal plants for generations to come.”—Susan Leopold, executive director, United Plant Savers “The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer rocks with practical insights for growing healing herbs and making a viable living. Locally grown medicine will be embraced by local food movements as more community herbalists get the word out. The ‘Health Care Marketplace’ we actually need today consists of more hard-working farm couples like Jeff and Mel Carpenter.”—Michael Phillips, author, The Holistic Orchard “I highly recommend The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer to all new and experienced growers of Western medicinal herbs. If you are an aspiring herb farmer, this is your book!”—Peg Schafer, author, The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm “Drawing on their fifteen years of experience growing medicinal herbs commercially, Jeff and Melanie Carpenter have written the most comprehensive book available on growing, harvesting, drying, packaging, and selling medicinal herbs. Beginning farmers will find this book particularly useful with its detailed instructions on all aspects of herb farming, including field-site selection, cultural practices, tools, equipment, and business planning.”—Jeanine Davis, PhD, associate professor and extension specialist, Department of Horticultural Science, North Carolina State University “Seasoned and novice growers alike will find a mother lode of information and wisdom packed into this gem of a book! Anyone interested in growing or using medicinal herbs will reap the benefits of Jeff and Mel’s meticulous research and hard-won expertise in the field and marketplace. These savvy business people are stellar models of earth stewards making a right livelihood on the land. The concept of 'kigo', a Japanese word meaning 'season word', is used to understand the seasonal energy of the points and how the body relates to the universal flow. As an understanding of the spirit of the point brings focus and potency to a practitioner's needling, it also strengthens their ability to touch a patient's soul and spirit, besides the physical body.Tying in the macro cosmic connection of the body to the universe with a poetic force that amplifies and deepens the effect of acupuncture, Kigo is the perfect companion not only for acupuncturists, but also for chiropractors and psychotherapists, doctors and nurses, and other practitioners who use the points as part of their clinical work.Trade ReviewMastery can come in many ways. While our left brains are impressed by acupuncture's ability to quantify specifically defined healing goals and repeat them, its true heart resides in its artistry. Here, the artist, empty even of intention, unleashes a mysterious unseen power, and healing happens. Few are those like Lorie Dechar who can spontaneously harness this therapeutic power. -- Randine Lewis, Ph.D., L.Ac., FABORM, Author of The Infertility Cure and The Way of the Fertile SoulIn Kigo, Lorie Dechar gifts us her poetic vision of the spirit of Chinese medicine. Nature and spirit are ravelled through this beautiful work and Lorie is our perceptive guide through the seasons. She unfolds the Chinese characters to pluck wisdom from their embedded symbols, inspiring practitioners to draw on their own inner resources to match the majesty of the points. -- John Kirkwood, author of The Way of the Five Elements and The Way of the Five SeasonsLorie Dechar draws on an impressively wide range of Chinese and other sources to bring the 'spirit' of many acupuncture points to life. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Microbiome, Gut Health and Oriental Medicine: An Integrated Approach
The human microbiome and its resident micro-organisms have in recent years come to represent a new frontier in health research and science. Yet this body of knowledge has hitherto been little addressed within Oriental Medicine theory and has consequently been underutilised in practice. The book proposes a novel and ground-breaking approach to understanding and influencing gut health and the microbiome by integrating the latest evidence from Western medical research and the long-established theory and practice of Oriental medicine. Building on an understanding of the body as a complete ecosystem where symbiotic relationships maintain balance in both mind and body, this integrative model sheds new light on an area that has seen rapidly growing interest both in and out of scientific communities, providing a more holistic and comprehensive perspective that both unites and broadens the potential applications of microbiome knowledge across medical and therapeutic traditions. The book's focus on the microbiome of the gastro-intestinal tract allows to explore the far-reaching and wide-ranging effects of the gut's micro-organisms on other body systems, on their ability to maintain good physical and mental health, and to fight disease and illness. This emphasis further provides readers with a practical guide to understanding and supporting a well-functioning gut and microbiome, through lifestyle choices and practices that focus on eating well, sleep hygiene, and mindful living. The booming interest in the area of gut health makes this compelling, accessible and informative hands-on book, an important tool for patients and practitioners of Oriental medicine and other relevant disciplines, offering readers a unique opportunity to add a new dimension to their knowledge of gut health. It will allow practitioners to deepen their professional development and enhance the quality of the care they provide by honing therapeutic skills and creating hybrid treatment plans that combine the latest findings from the gut-health literature and Oriental medicine.

The History Press Ltd The History of Domestic Plant Medicine
Book SynopsisThe debt medicine owes to botany is not commonly appreciated. In the past, medicine relied almost entirely on plants, and even today, many western medicines are plant derived. Despite this, historians have largely neglected the study of domestic medicine, practised by the ordinary person and passed down through generations, in favour of ‘official medicine’. The History of Domestic Plant Medicine brings together manuscripts, letters, diaries, personal oral interviews and other primary evidence to produce a detailed picture of the medicinal use of native plants in Britain from 1700 to the present day. Recording for posterity this neglected aspect of our heritage, it is a valuable contribution to the study of the folklore of modern Britain and a fascinating piece of social history.

Sharing decades of expert knowledge and experience, Randine Lewis bridges the gap and translates Western medicine into Chinese medicine and biomedical results, consolidating both in a grounded and clear approach that allows practitioners to remain true to core Oriental principles around the basis of disease and healing. Each section highlights pertinent Chinese medical physiology and how pathophysiologic states develop, allowing readers to hone their treatment plans. It encourages practitioners to ease away from the fear-based mindset found in some western medicinal approaches and to focus on the treatment and understanding of subtle imbalances before they are evident in the blood. Focus will be on the most common medical conditions that bring patients to clinic and evaluating how popular pharmaceuticals impact Chinese medicine patterns.Trade ReviewIn "Spirit of the Blood" Randine Lewis presents the reader with a fascinating exploration of integrative, East-West thinking. This exploratory work opens a conversation regarding the interpretation of lab testing from dual perspectives, and lays the groundwork for further thinking on this subject. As a pioneering, solo work with information taken from her experience and study in classical Taoist practice and in academics in Chinese medicine, the ideas presented should be critically evaluated and used to open and further dialog rather than be seen as canonical. Thinking in this way expands our understanding of both Eastern and Western concepts, forging towards an integration that may one day be transformative to medicine overall. -- David W. Miller M.D., FAAP, L.Ac., Dipl. OM, Medical Director, Pediatric Integrative MedicineDr. Lewis has written a brilliant textbook that will be invaluable to all who practice Chinese Medicine. The writing is exquisite. The cases and quotes and impactful and perfectly placed in the text. This book could only have been written by someone with a masterful grasp of both the Western and Chinese Medical systems of practice. I have been privileged to witness Dr. Lewis teaching some of this material to acupuncture students and to see the light in their eyes when they begin to connect what I have been teaching them about these Western lab values to the spirit of Chinese Medicine. This book is a great gift to us all. -- Kathy Robinson MD, Professor and Chair of Biomedicine Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical ArtsAn invaluable contribution to the emerging field of Integral Medicine, Spirit of the Blood brings two disparate diagnostic filters into a new, dynamic relationship. While respecting the quantitative precision of Western laboratory tests, Dr. Lewis consistently honors Chinese medicine's qualitative understanding of the blood as carrier of emotion, soul, and spirit as she guides practitioners through the process of a multi-dimensional interpretation of lab results. The book transcends the view of classical Chinese medicine as a complement to allopathic Western medicine and opens the way for the two systems to become co-creative partners in an exploration of the vast mystery of embodiment. -- Lorie Eve Dechar, author of Five Spirits, Alchemy of Inner Work and KigoThis book is aptly named Spirit of the Blood because the author, Randine A. Lewis, so beautifully brings the heart right into medicine. As a practitioner who has recognized the importance of a deep understanding of blood for the diagnosis and treatment of women, I am delighted to have discovered this text. Randine has found a way to elegantly weave the language of spirit, Chinese medicine and allopathic diagnostics together that does not confuse. Rather each of these aspects serve to illuminate the others, adding clarity while inviting our hearts to feel the resonances. This book promises to be a core resource for practitioners of Chinese medicine. -- Sharon Weizenbaum, Director of White Pine Healing Arts Clinic and Educational FacilityIn ancient China, books were treasures written by doctors with immense knowledge and clinical experience who helped evolve our understanding of medicine, framing it within the context of new perspectives and incorporating new scientific knowledge. Dr. Lewis is clearly one who embodies these qualifications. Through this book, Dr. Lewis imparts an understanding, not just of the technicalities of how to frame bloodwork within a Chinese medicine paradigm, but how one's life manifests through the blood. I found this book incredibly useful; containing a wealth of both theoretical and clinical knowledge. Highly recommended. -- Dr. Brandon Horn, PhD, DTCM, LAc, Lotus Center for Integrative MedicineIn Spirit of the Blood, Randine Lewis moves deftly between classical texts and modern diagnostics to create a methodology for understanding a patient's bloodwork within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine. The result is an illuminating book that is a joy read and will become a much-loved resource for clinicians and students alike. -- Jill Blakeway DACM, Author, Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of HealingThis book is a steppingstone towards those goals of "one medicine" representing everything there is to know about the persons' state- health or disease, well or sick. By dividing its approach along lines of concepts such as Qi and Blood; Metabolic and earthly digestion; salts and informational byways (endocrine system) ; organ systems as the next level of consolidation and conformation of our living cells; Spirit of the Blood provides a structured map to the potential of east west unification of understanding in the management of the person. Bravo on what is a monumental text for both reference and consolidation of information to set the stage for further study. -- Dr Paul C Magarelli MD Ph.D.If Biomedicine and Chinese Medicine were Yin & Yang, Randine Lewis brings them together perfectly. Understanding lab work from a Chinese Medicine perspective has never been easier for readers. A truly impressive book! -- Olivia Pojer, MDAs times evolve, practitioners of Chinese medicine must learn to communicate in the language their patient understands in order to earn their trust and confidence while maintaining the essence of Chinese medicine for effective treatment outcomes. In our lifetime Chinese medicine has been considered complementary or alternative at best, not a mainstay in and of itself. Dr. Lewis expertly teaches how to view biomedical markings by weaving Taoist wisdom and psycho-spiritual themes into a Chinese medical pattern approach. Through analyzing common lab values, we are shown how to communicate confidently and treat our patients' patterns with acupuncture and herbal medicine. Spirit of the Blood is sure to be a defining work in our field as this text applies ancient Chinese wisdom to modern biomedicine without losing the gifts of either. This is a spectacular resource that will benefit both practitioners and their patients. -- Dr. Lorne Brown, B.Sc., Dr.TCM, CPA, FABORM,CHt, Founder of Healthy Seminars.com, Clinical Director of Acubalance Wellness Centre, Chair of The Integrative Fertility SymposiumRandine Lewis is someone who has the ability to bring the theory of Chinese medicine to life, through the use of rich metaphors and stories that connect us to the foundations of our medicine. In this important text, Randine has captured the key concepts of conventional anatomy and physiology as they relate to pathology results, and married them beautifully with Chinese medicine understanding and insights. This book is based upon acknowledgement and discussion of Heaven and Spirit and the way the Dao flows through us all, and it is from this starting point that Randine shares her knowledge of both paradigms in a captivating and compelling way. Randine effortlessly demonstrates a graceful fluid movement between the many branches of science and medicine, and the many aspects of Chinese medicine philosophy and physiological concepts. An integrative approach to Chinese medicine holds more power when it deeply integrates all aspects of Chinese medicine, the trick is to do it in a way that preserves and enhances the power and flexibility of our medicine. Randine certainly achieves this outcome with Spirit of the Blood. This text is a beautiful tapestry that weaves Randine's detailed explanations of Chinese medicine concepts with her deep understanding of medical concepts and pathology results. All practitioners who read this book will absorb Randine's knowledge and wisdom and thereby enhance their relationship and understanding of both systems of medicine. It will be a cherished book in my collection. -- Dr Clare Pyers, BHSc(TCM), Cert Adv Clin Prac(China), Doctor of Chinese Medicine and author of Integrative TCM Guide to PathologySpirit of the Blood, by Dr. Randine Lewis, can motivate practitioners to expand the depth and beauty of our medicine. Using the energetics of Chinese Medicine, Randine illuminates and clarifies Blood dynamics. Evaluating laboratory findings from a Chinese medicine perspective enhances a knowledge that inspires trust from our patients. This book's wisdom can inspire the reader to understand the Blood's ability to confer physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Randine is a treasure sharing these teachings that emanate from her cultivational presence. It is Randine's presence, wisdom and Heart that presents a deep knowing, that in this time, she is a Master of Chinese Medicine. -- Mary Cissy Majebe, OMD, President of Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical ArtsRandine Anderson Lewis has written a must-read primer for any TCM practitioner who is searching for a deep understanding of blood lab analysis. It is the perfect guide through the complex and confusing jungle of laboratory test results. -- Dr. med. univ. Ursula Ritz Medical, Specialist for gynaecology and obstetrics, Specialist for reproductive endocrinology and infertilityAs a Western allopathic physician, I would have never imagined to interpret such a wealth of information in a simple blood panel! "Spirit of Blood", is an artful blend of the Chinese classical concepts and Western medical practices. Aside from being an extremely valuable clinical aid, it is imbued by the author's authenticity and spiritual search. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Essential Pulse Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine:
Book SynopsisPulse diagnosis is a notoriously complicated area in Chinese medicine with very few practical or accessible resources available to practitioners to improve their skillset. This clear, didactic manual provides detailed yet user-friendly instructions for a pulse diagnosis method the author has developed called Mai Jing A-B-C, allowing for clinical competency and confidence in pulse diagnosis.Jamie Hamilton draws on pulse methods and techniques found primarily in the 3rd century classic of Chinese medicine, Mai Jing, that have often been overlooked in later centuries. He uses his teaching background to reassess these methods and breaks down incredibly complex concepts into simpler forms to enable learning and immediate application into practice. The method has been honed into six simple steps, each accompanied by detailed case studies to further aid clarity.Trade ReviewA great book is one that allows us to see with fresh eyes something which is close at hand. In this wonderfully researched text, Jamie Hamilton points us all in a direction we may have long known but not followed. After working for decades in the clinic and carefully checking pulses on all patients, I had long noticed that I was feeling changes for which I had no clear name or method for weaving into my diagnosis. By taking me from the beginnings of pulse diagnosis in classical sources and building a logical and methodical system, I have gained a greater vocabulary with which to describe what I already felt. However, in his new translations and innovative clinical applications of classical texts, I have had the even more exciting realization that I still have so much to learn. Jamie draws not only from his classical research but also mines his exposure to multiple modern methodologies to produce an elegant and workable pulse technique which is explained with clear diagrams and fascinating case studies. For the busy clinician, he even proposes quick and simple charting techniques which will eventually give rise to a new visual language for practitioners to share clinical insights. This is the book on pulse I have been waiting for. -- Dr. Jason D. Robertson, DAHM, Seattle Institute of East Asian MedicineClear, concise, practical, and approachable. This is what Hamilton has done for pulses in this book. Taking from his clinical as well as theoretical experience, Hamilton has created a step-by-step system that allows new practitioners to gain confidence in their diagnostic abilities and permits experience practitioners to refine and add nuance to their diagnostics. For anyone who uses pulse taking in their clinic, this should be the first book they go to. -- Jonathan Shubs – Ac. Dipl. Author of Sun’s Season of ChannelsThis is a book that will deepen understanding and increase practical skills in pulse taking. With a special interest in pulse taking, Jamie researched classic texts and then used these findings in his clinic to devise a simple step by step approach to what is a complex subject. The method is a well thought out and easy to follow. Clear diagrams illustrate the different stages and the conversational style of writing makes this book a pleasure to read. The easy to read style of writing contrasts nicely with the quotes from classic texts. Jamie's skill as a teacher comes through in the book. The method is presented in a logical and systematic manner so that a thorough understanding of the basics can developed and practiced. -- Catriona Jennings BSc (Hons) Acupuncture. BAcC. BVMSIt is so user friendly, beautifully clear and well explained with just the right balance of history/back ground philosophy , case studies and diagrams to keep the reader really engaged and feeing as if each page is a great learning experience.Key for me is the sense of clinical relevance - after reading each chapter I just wanted to rush back into clinic to put the knowledge in to practice immediately. This book should be essential reading for all students as well as those more experienced practitioners. -- Paula Macklin Creasy Lic.Ac. Royal Botanic Gardens A Herbal of Iraq
Book SynopsisThe flora of Iraq is particularly rich and diverse, owing to the country’s diverse habitats of deserts, plains and mountains. The inspiration for this book was the work of the Iraqi herbalist, Abdul Jaleel Ibrahim Al-Quragheely, who documented the country’s flora and its uses in ethnobotanical medicine. He opened a local practice in 1990 and dispensed herbal medicines for six years when communities were most in need. A Herbal of Iraq describes 50 plants and their uses in traditional herbal medicine in the region. In addition to the wealth of information it contains, this dual language English-Arabic herbal is illustrated richly throughout with archival and contemporary botanical art.

Collective Ink The Hummingbird's Journey to God: Perspectives on
Book SynopsisSan Pedro, a visionary and hallucinogenic brew derived from the mescaline-based Trichocereus pachanoi or 'cactus of vision', is one of Peru's most important and powerful teacher plants. For thousands of years this brew has been drunk by spiritual seekers and those who need healing, and it has cured a wide variety of physical problems, including cancer, diabetes, paralysis, and pneumonia, as well as emotional and psychological issues such as alcoholism, heartbreak, and grief. Those who work with it say San Pedro brings us closer to God. Remarkably, however, while other South American teacher plants such as ayahuasca have been well reported in the literature, there has been no book specifically written about the shamanic use of San Pedro - until now. "The Hummingbird's Journey to God" provides wisdom for the whole of mankind.Trade ReviewThe Hummingbird's Journey to God includes an introduction by Dr David Luke of Northampton University who is currently engaged on research into states of non-ordinary reality and the ESP-enhancing potential of ayahuasca and San Pedro. Collective Ink Herbs of the Northern Shaman
Book SynopsisHerbs that can be used to affect the mental state of the consumer, as well as for their healing properties, have been a part of cultures and sub-cultures all around the world ever since our early ancestors first started experimenting to find out what various plants could be used for. Author Steve Andrews takes the view that the best herbs for use by shamans are those plant teachers that grow locally. This book is unique because it focuses only on those species that can be found growing within the northern countries of the world. Best-selling author Howard Marks, aka Mr Nice, described Herbs of the Northern Shaman as EXCELLENT! That was for the original version of this book when it was first published with black and white illustrations and photographs. Now, Herbs of the Northern Shaman has been updated to include additional species of herb and fungus, as well as a whole new collection of stunning colour photos by Katrinia Rindsberg. Besides well-known psychoactive herbs such as Cannabis, Morning Glory and Datura, other plants that have been said to have mind-altering properties are also described, plants such as the Meadow Buttercup, the Lime Tree and the Rhododendron.Trade ReviewA nicely produced reference book for anyone interested in the use of psychoactive herbs. The herbs covered range from the obvious ones such as Fly Agaric, Magic Mushrooms, Mandrake, Thorn Apple and Vervain to more obscure herbs like corydalis, hawkweed, periwinkle and saffron, to name but a few. (Witchcraft & Wicca, Avalonia.) If anyone can locate mind altering northern hemisphere plants then it's the bard of Ely (Cardiff) Steve Andrews. This easy to read, well illustrated and informative directory is about as comprehensive as you can get - how do you want your mind altered? How much do you want to pay? What risks do you run? is it illegal? Where do the plants grow? Can you nurture them yourself out the back? Steve does, shows how, explains and entertains. A must. (Peter Finch)

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Diagnostics of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Book SynopsisThe principles and practice of diagnostics are key to administering effective treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. The ability to recognise and diagnose symptoms and complaints correctly is fundamental to deciding on appropriate remedies, and this book provides a comprehensive introduction to all the principles that students and practitioners need to know. The authors outline the key methods used in diagnosis, and describe the eight basic categories of ailment and disease: yin and yang, exterior and interior, cold and heat, and deficiency and excess. They provide detailed instructions on how to identify and rebalance the relative strengths of pathogens and Qi in the body, and how to differentiate between syndromes that might look the same, using traditional Chinese medicine methods. The book concludes with useful forms for completion in taking a diagnosis. Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels.Trade ReviewThere are other textbooks that deal with all the topics in these books but very few provide such an accessible format. If you want to gently progress from Western medical acupuncture into a working knowledge of TCM, the second book on Basic Theories would be a good place to start. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course DirectorThis is another book in the series International Acupuncture Textbooks and, as such, is very much up to standard. It is beautifully produced, carefully laid out and offers a very complete view of TCM diagnostics. It is also very reasonably priced... Combining practical instruction with helpfully detailed theory, this authoritative textbook is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels. I would not hesitate to recommend it. It may take a while to assimilate but it really is written so well that any physiotherapist could make sense of it and begin to make their acupuncture treatments certainly more subtle and sophisticated but, most importantly, more effective. -- JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association fo Chartered Physiotherapists), Dr Val Hopwood, Course DirectorCombining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... Although modest in size, these texts are packed with information... in terms of portability and cost... they make themselves serious contenders for the college bags of students of Chinese medicine... In terms of visual presentation, other than the obligatory yin-yang and five-phase diagrams, assistance is limited to a few flow diagrams, which may disappoint more visually-orientated learners. This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such...These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here, (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese MedicineTable of Contents1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong: Essential NeiGong
Book SynopsisFire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a traditional Chinese internal alchemy method that embodies the spirit of the rising dragon, an auspicious symbol of transformation in Chinese culture. The form works directly on the acupuncture meridians, releasing areas of stagnation and bringing the physical and emotional body into a balanced state of well-being.This Qigong form implements special visualization and breathing techniques in addition to movements that imitate sparks arising from a bonfire and swirling upward like a spiraling dragon. Stoking our 'inner fire' melts away the 'ice', or the areas of blockage and disease, opens our energetic pathways and allows the smooth flow of Qi in our meridians. The Fire Dragon practice follows the traditional internal alchemy process, where Jing (essence) transforms to Qi (vital energy), Qi transforms to Shen (spirit), and Shen returns to Emptiness. Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a key Qigong form for those seeking healing from cancer and other significant health challenges, and is the practice the authors turned to in order to transform the grief over their son's death. The book provides background information and a detailed description of the form itself, illustrated with calligraphy, meridian drawings, and photographs throughout.Trade Reviewhighly recommended for those seeking healing from major chronic illnesses or from traumatic life events. -- Qigong HealingOnce again Master Wu offers an interesting insight into the ancient traditional system of Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong... Master Wu is going from strength to strength... -- Tai Chi UK“With Master Wu's lineage and Dr. Taylor Wu's years of immersion in the Taoist Art of Qi circulating healing ways, this book provides excellent guidance for Qi Gong practitioners.” -- Chungliang Al Huang, president and director, Living Tao Foundation and International Lan Ting Institute, author of Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain and co-author of Tao: The Watercourse Way“The Fire Dragon by Master and Dr Wu is yet another little gem from Singing Dragon. Not only is this meridian exercise a classic piece of Emei Qigong but the authors have succeeded in making the Dragon reveal its wisdom and even the introduction gives a timely reminder of 'knowledge stagnation' that speaks to both the beginner in Qigong and to the experienced professional like myself.” -- Gordon Faulkner, Principal Instructor, Chanquanshu School of Daoist Arts and author of Managing Stress with Qigong“Teachers teach what they know. We need them. Masters rarely teach, but when they do, they teach what they are. Tigers do not hand out resumes but they are masters of being tigers. The modern world has become a discourteous complication drowning in an unnatural, unconnected soup of over-information, bereft of wisdom and any sane direction. For our bodies, minds, and souls to survive this worldwide cultural disaster, we need the delicious complexity of our real indigenous natures to reappear. We are lucky to have Master Wu's generous approach as a place to begin becoming natural humans again.” -- Martín Prechtel, author of Secrets of the Talking JaguarTable of ContentsIntroduction: Wordless Teaching. 1. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Keepers of the Soul: The Five Guardian Elements
Book SynopsisThe five elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – are fundamental to Chinese medicine and metaphysics, but it can be difficult to get beyond the purely intellectual level of understanding. This rich book gets to the heart of five element theory, and offers passionate reflections on the spirit of each element, and the practice of five element acupuncture. The author provides accessible accounts of each element, explaining what it looks like, how it presents in an individual's characteristics, how it can become unbalanced and how treatment might be approached to restore balance. With profiles of various well-known figures, including David Beckham and Elvis Presley, the author explores what it means to live in harmony as a unique being and how the five elements help shape and cultivate our body and soul. The book explains how Chinese physicians understand and diagnose their patients and offers invaluable insights into how to practise five element acupuncture effectively.A valuable and thoughtful addition to any library, this book will be of particular interest to acupuncturists, practitioners and students of complementary medicine as well as anyone contemplating Chinese medicine as a treatment option or interested more generally in human psychology.Trade ReviewPraise for the first edition'Keepers of the Soul is an important addition to the literature of this area. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches - TianGan
Book SynopsisEssential reading for serious students of Chinese practical arts, including medicine, martial arts and FengShui, Master Zhongxian Wu and Dr Karin Taylor Wu provide a detailed explanation of the 22 GanZhi symbols in this book, outlining the characteristics of each, and their interactions and relationships. TianGan (Heavenly Stems) and DiZhi (Earthly Branches), commonly abbreviated to GanZhi, originated in the ancient Chinese cosmological sciences and is a complex calendrical system which was created to codify the patterns of life and of the universe itself. The ten symbols of Gan express the Yin or Yang perspective of Five Elements and embody the Way of Heaven. The 12 symbols of Zhi, made manifest in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, hold the root of each Element and embrace the Way of Earth. Poetic summaries from the Song dynasty give the reader a deep understanding of the nature of each Stem and their relationship to each other. Offering an unprecedented insight into the subtleties and far-reaching influence of this ancient system, this book will be invaluable for the study or practice of Chinese medicine, FengShui, Chinese astrology, traditional Chinese cosmology, Qigong, Taiji, and other inner cultivation practices. A set of study cards (9781848191501), also published by Singing Dragon, are available to accompany this book.Trade ReviewZhongxian Wu and Karin Taylor Wu have accomplished the feat of producing a readable account of Gan-Zhi, one of the most complex subjects among the gnostic sciences of ancient China: the detailed calculation of how, exactly, the Above and the Below interweave and create qualitative differences in our space-time environment.
