PCCS Books Carl Rogers Counsels a Black Client: Race and
Book SynopsisThis book investigates and explores the issues of race and culture in 'a single case study' of one of Rogers' own demonstration films: Carl Rogers Counsels an Individual. Part 1: Right to be Desperate. Part 2: On Anger and Hurt, in order to generate multiple meanings of how person-centred therapy can be more inclusive of Black and ethnic minority clients. The films show a young Black man in a state of remission from leukaemia, in therapy with Carl Rogers. The emerging knowledge and innovative clinical practices that arise from the analysis in the various chapters are all ultimately concerned with multicultural and diversity issues in counselling and psychotherapy. The contributors, from a wide variety of therapeutic approaches and modalities, raise fundamental questions concerning the intersection of race, culture and ethnicity with the therapeutic process.Trade ReviewThis is an ambitious and courageous book - Though the starting point of the book is two brief interactions between two individuals, its scope is as broad as humanity. The book itself is a case study of intellectual honesty and racial sensitivity. It is the most important discussion of race, culture and ethnicity in the context of person-centred therapy ever written. Tony Merry, University of East London.Table of ContentsPART 1. In sharing with us the most useful psychology ideas the author has learned in her 15 years as a clinical psychologist - ones she uses in her own life, and returns to time and time again with people who have come to see her for therapy - she provides plenty to think about that we too can put into practice to improve our own lives.'Compassionate and easy to read, this book can lead us to better ways of living. Book SynopsisJohn Cromby is Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, UK. Previously, he conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and he has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings. His work engages with the ways that bodies and social processes come together to produce experience, including experiences of distress. In recent years this has meant exploring topics including paranoia, clinical sadness, emotion and fear of crime, and experimenting with methods of jointly analysing textual data and embodied activity. He is a former editor of the journal Subjectivity. David Harper is Reader in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London (UEL), UK. He trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool and worked as a clinical psychologist in National Health Service mental health services in the north-west of the UK for nine years. For a number of years he combined work as a clinician with parTrade Review'This is the book that I have been waiting years to see. Superb, thoroughly researched and intellectually refreshing - a game changer in the field. It should be mandatory reading on every psychology course not just those dealing with mental health issues.' - Ron Roberts, Kingston University, UK 'At last, an undergraduate text that adopts a critical approach to 'Abnormal Psychology'. Psychology, Mental Health and Distress is the first of its kind, providing an accessible, engaging, and refreshing take on the standard material. Assembled by an impressive team of world-class scholars, this text extends the analysis of people's distress beyond biomedical and individualist framings, and toward a deeper exploration of the complex interplay between the body, the psych, and the social and political context. This is an important and revolutionary resource for students and scholars alike.' - Michelle Lafrance, St Thomas University, Canada 'I wish this book had been around when I was an undergraduate. Two aspects of the book are especially important. First, recognising the importance of culture in mental health, and secondly, giving a voice to mental health service users.' - Kate Bennett, University of Liverpool, UK 'In simple language and in no ambiguous terms, the authors of this book clearly bring out the limitations of current theory and research in psychiatry, abnormal and clinical psychology. The authors also go a step further to show how we can unshackle ourselves from these limitations. I whole heartedly recommend this book to both the beginning student and seasoned practitioner of mental health who is interested in helping people afflicted by mental distress.' - David Lackland Sam, University of Bergen, Norway 'An inspiring and ambitious text - a longed-for change to passive acceptances of psychiatric categories. This book is ideal for academics and students wishing to critically probe the limitations of DSM diagnoses.' - Leanne Franklin, Cardiff Metropolitan University 'The book gives an excellent introduction to the field of abnormal psychology and could be read by students, academics, service users and clinical psychologists both to understand the different causes to mental distress, but also how these problems could be best treated.' - Roger Hagen, Norwegian University of Science and Technology 'This is a book that is long overdue. So many books on psychopathology tend to be overly influenced by a biomedical and cognitive approach to understanding psychological distress, and rarely go further than that. This book takes a refreshing psychological, social and critical approach. It does not discard the importance of biological factors, but it considers in detail the various psychological and social determinants of mental health and distress. I recommend this book as a must-read for clinical psychology trainees, and for students and professionals working in the field of mental health.' - Poul Rohleder, Anglia Ruskin University, UK 'I think it is a brilliant book by what I have read so far - and it has been a long time in coming! Jessica Kingsley Publishers Supporting Autistic People with Eating Disorders:
Book SynopsisThis book explores the link between autism and eating disorders through testimonies from practitioners, service users and carers. Combining research findings, case studies and first-hand accounts, it provides insights into how individuals on the autism spectrum can be supported towards full recovery from an eating disorder. Edited by the lead Clinical Psychologist at the Maudsley Eating Disorder National Service, informed by their team's research, chapters focus on the unique issues arising when autism and eating disorders coexist. The contributors suggest treatment adaptations from a multi-disciplinary perspective, and touch more broadly on the topic of poor mental health outcomes for autistic individuals, and how these might be improved.Trade ReviewAlthough the association between autism and eating disorders was first recognised some decades ago it has taken a long time for this knowledge to have an impact on clinical practice. In this book people with autism, family members and clinical and care staff describe their experiences of a specialist service for individuals with a dual diagnosis of autism and eating disorder. It is clear from these personal accounts how recognition of autism in patients with eating disorders and appropriate adaptations to standard intervention practices, can significantly increase treatment effectiveness. The benefits for people with autism, and those living with or caring for them are also significant, not only in terms of the eating problems but also with regard to feelings of self-confidence and self-worth, and overall quality of life. -- Professor Patricia Howlin, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology, King’s College LondonFor too long, many clinicians diagnosed a person's anorexia but overlooked that the person may also be autistic. Such under-diagnosis means the person is left without the right support. This valuable book, edited by a pioneering expert in the intersection of these two clinical conditions, is full of accessible case studies and practical tools, which will empower both clinicians and their patients. -- Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Director, Autism Research Centre, Cambridge UniversityAutistic people need tailored care for eating disorders; this excellent volume by Kate Tchanturia and colleagues shows how and why such an approach can change lives. With detailed practical examples and guidance, this is a must-read for anyone working with autistic people struggling with eating disorders. In fact, given the under-recognition of autism amongst women, I would urge everyone working in eating disorders to read it. -- Professor Francesca Happé FBA FMedSci, Past President of the International Society for Autism Research

Oxford University Press Inc Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic Brief
Book SynopsisThis edition of Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Brief Six-Session Version for Primary Care and Related Settings, Workbook, outlines a time-limited treatment for those dealing with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Developed for use with patients who seek treatment from a primary care provider, this guide is based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The program described can be delivered by a general practitioner or other health or mental health care provider in primary care or related settings in up to six sessions. A modified version of the more intensive 12-session version of the program, this treatment represents an introduction to the skills and techniques that have been proven effective for overcoming panic disorder, and that patients can easily learn and continue on their own.Trade ReviewThis brief six session treatment of panic disorder has been shown to be effective in primary care settings when administered by behavioral health specialists. As most patients with panic attacks first contact their primary care providers, use of this evidence-based manual can avoid years of struggling to get an accurate diagnosis and the most effective evidence-based treatment. This brief version is likely to be used in other settings where a longer treatment may not be feasible. I enthusiastically recommend this manual for every primary care facility and other settings where a brief treatment is warranted. * Ricks Warren, PhD, ABPP, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan Medical School *This suite of therapist manuals and patient workbooks, focusing on cutting edge CBT treatment for panic disorder, remains a classic in the field. The authors are internationally renowned for their expertise in this area and have updated the text with new research, an enhanced emphasis on inhibitory learning to inform the process and conduct of exposure exercises, and new and improved case material. Starting with the previous version, the program pays more attention to variability in how fast or slow a client is able move through the treatment, improving the patient—treatment 'match'. The end result facilitates implementation for the user and is in a way like having a personal supervision experience with the authors. * Peter Roy-Byrne, MD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of Washington School of Medicine *The Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic volumes - the therapist guide and the workbooks for clients - are indisputably the finest evidence-based books for helping people overcome panic disorder. New Harbinger Publications ACT for Psychosis Recovery: A Practical Manual
Book SynopsisACT for Psychosis Recovery is the first book to provide a breakthrough, evidence-based, step-by-step approach for group work with clients suffering from psychosis. As evidenced in a study by Patricia A. Bach and Steven C. Hayes, patients with psychotic symptoms who received acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in addition to treatment as usual showed half the rate of rehospitalization as those who did not. With this important guide, you'll learn how a patient's recovery can be both supported and sustained by promoting acceptance, mindfulness, and values-driven action. The journey of personal recovery from psychosis is immensely challenging. Patients often struggle with paranoia, auditory hallucinations, difficulties with motivation, poor concentration and memory, and emotional dysregulation. In addition, families and loved ones may have trouble understanding psychosis, and stigmatizing attitudes can limit opportunity and create alienation for patients.True recovery from psychosis means empowering patients to take charge of their lives. Rather than focusing on pathology, ACT teaches patients how to stay grounded in the present moment, disengage from their symptoms, and pursue personally meaningful lives based on their values. In this groundbreaking book, you will learn how to facilitate ACT groups based on a central metaphor (Passengers on the Bus), so that mindfulness and values-based action are introduced in a way that is engaging and memorable. You will also find tips and strategies to help clients identify valued directions, teach clients how to respond flexibly to psychotic symptoms, thoughts, and emotions that have been barriers to living a valued life, and lead workshops that promote compassion and connection among participants. You'll also find tried and tested techniques for engaging people in groups, particularly those traditionally seen as "hard to reach"-people who may be wary of mental health services or experience paranoia. And finally, you'll gain skills for engaging participants from various ethnic backgrounds.Finding purpose and identity beyond mental illness is an important step in a patient's journey toward recovery. Using the breakthrough approach in this book, you can help clients gain the insight needed to achieve lasting well-being.

New Harbinger Publications The Heart of ACT: Developing a Flexible,
Book SynopsisIn The Heart of ACT, renowned acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) trainer Robyn Walser explores ACT as a process-based therapy incorporating interpersonal, intrapersonal, and overarching and ongoing processes, as well as the integration of six core components of psychological flexibility to connect clinicians to the dynamic and relational implementation of ACT.Engaging clinical scenarios, therapeutic insights, and supervision dialogues are offered to help clinicians move beyond their conceptual understanding of ACT principles to master the nuances of the therapeutic relationship at the heart of ACT. Using the tips and strategies in this professional guide, you'll develop a flexible, grounded, and client-centered practice. With this comprehensive resource, you'll learn to cultivate an organic, process-driven practice, grounded in the heart of the therapeutic relationship and responsive to clients in the moment. The Heart of ACT is designed to mimic the supervision experience by presenting material in thought-provoking chapters grounded in real-life clinical situations and challenges. In the book, you'll also find supervision dialogues inspired by Walser's work with her supervisees, Carlton Coulter and Manuela O'Connell. Carlton and Manuela comment and ask questions related to the material in the book and their own ACT learning process. These are then addressed by Walser in a dialogue designed to assist clinicians in connecting to the material. These sections mimic the helpful mentoring process of one-on-one training and supervision, and offer insights into specific therapeutic challenges that can unfold in structured conversation. As the applications of ACT grow, so does the need for up-to-date professional resources. Unlike many advanced ACT books that focus on procedures and techniques, The Heart of ACT focuses on the heart of the therapeutic relationship, as well as the "soft skills" that are difficult to describe, but which often mark the difference between a merely good clinician and an excellent one. If you're looking to take your ACT delivery to a new, exciting level, this book is a must-have addition to your professional library.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Book SynopsisDialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach used to treat individuals with complex psychological disorders, particularly chronically suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The therapy articulates a series of principles that effectively guide clinicians in responding to problematic behaviours. Treated problems include, among others, attempting suicide, bingeing, purging, using illegal drugs and behaviours that directly impede the treatment.Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Distinctive Features highlights theoretical and practical features of the treatment using extensive clinical examples to demonstrate how the theory translates into practice. This updated edition reviews recent modifications to the structure of the treatment and considers more recent research evidence for both the biosocial theory underpinning the treatment and treatment efficacy. The book provides a clear overview of a complex treatment, through Trade Review'For those already familiar with the original version of DBT: Distinctive Features, the second edition fulfils the same function of simplifying and clarifying the theoretical concepts underlying the therapy. The same practical summary of the treatment components are there, with clinical examples to demonstrate the main points. This revised version brings the research evidence up to date, including reference to DSM-V, and some thought provoking discussion on full-program DBT versus skills only interventions. This book is the perfect accompaniment to Linehan's own manuals, either to facilitate understanding for new students, or to provide condensed summaries for the more experienced therapist. Every practitioner of DBT will benefit from reading it.' - Dr Christine Dunkley, Honorary lecturer, University of Bangor, Chair of the Society for DBT of the UK and Ireland'I am always impressed by the superb job the authors do of clearly outlining the essential features of a complex treatment like DBT in an accessible manner. Therapists will find their clear explanations and clinical examples provide a refreshing insight into the art and application of DBT. This engaging book, by two exceedingly well-informed and renowned authors, leads us on a journey of discovery from the principles that underpin DBT to the details of how to apply it in practice. Their discussion of generating, selecting and implementing solutions alone makes it the go-to book for all DBT practitioners and essential reading for those curious to find out more.' - Dr. Maggie Stanton, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead, Honorary Lecturer University of Southampton.Table of ContentsIntroduction Acknowledgements Part 1 THE DISTINCTIVE THEORETICAL FEATURES OF DBT 1. Cambridge University Press The Picky Eaters Recovery Book
Book SynopsisAre you a picky eater? Do you worry that food will make you vomit or choke? Do you find eating to be a chore? If yes, this book is for you! Your struggles could be caused by an avoidant/ restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), a disorder characterizedby eating a limited variety or volume of food. You may have been told that you eat like a child, but ARFID affects people right across the lifespan, and this book is the first specifically written to support adults. Join Drs. Jennifer Thomas, Kendra Becker, and Kamryn Eddy - three ARFID experts at Harvard Medical School - to learn how to beat your ARFID at home and unlock a healthier relationship with food. Real-life examples show that you are not alone, while practical tips, quizzes, worksheets, and structured activities take you step by step through the latest evidence-based treatment techniques to support your recovery--Trade Review'The authors have crafted a self-help book that empowers individuals with ARFID to coordinate their own treatment pathway. This is critical given limited access to expertise in the assessment and treatment of ARFID. The book provides guidance on engaging with medical providers regarding signs and symptoms of ARFID and potential evaluations that may uncover underlying nutritional deficiency. It also offers a framework for understanding ARFID alongside valuable tools to build and support a healthy diet. The authors recognize the variable presentations of ARFID in terms of restricted volume and/or variety, provide real world examples of treatment planning and implementation, and outline a roadmap for expanding dietary intake across food groups.' William Sharp, Ph.D., Director of the Children's Multidisciplinary Feeding Program, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta; Associate Professor, Division of Autism and Related Disorders and Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine'In this book, three of the most skilled and approachable ARFID clinicians on the planet usher you through a step-by-step proven approach to broaden your food horizons and conquer your food fears. They demystify exposure treatment and approach severe picky eating in a completely nonjudgmental fashion. Case histories are woven throughout the book like avatars so that you can see how real people with severe ARFID are able to be liberated from often life-long restrictions. The book's visuals enrich the text providing a second layer of explanation and alternative ways to learn. This self-help psychology gem guides you in becoming your own therapist and illustrates how to recover at your own pace.' Cynthia M. Bulik, PhD, FAED, Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Founding Director, UNC Centre of Excellence for Eating Disorders; Professor, Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden'Jennifer, Kendra and Kamryn give us an essential reading, both for people affected by this 'new' eating disorder and for professionals who wish to expand their knowledge. The accessible way in which the concepts are handled allows the individual to begin their journey towards recovery through an evidence-based method, especially important for populations with limited access to specialized treatment. The book raises awareness of the prevalence of eating disorders as well as the suffering and the limitations that living with ED symptoms entails, ultimately contributing towards breaking the stigma around these diseases. I am very honored to be one of the first to read this book and I congratulate the authors for this great contribution to our field.' Eva Maria Trujillo Chi Vacuán, MD, FAED, CEDS, Fiaedp, FAAP; CEO and co-founder of Comenzar de Nuevo, A.C.; Clinical Professor at Escuela de Medicina y Ciencias de la Salud. Tecnologico de Monterrey.'Drs. Thomas, Becker, and Eddy have written a beautiful and very accessible approach to ARFID that enables those struggling with the symptoms of ARFID to not only feel seen and understood, but to also experience hope for change. The case examples, self-assessment, and theoretical model of how avoidance perpetuates the maintenance of symptoms are important treatment elements. These elements help facilitate an individual's understanding of their unique experience with ARFID and to galvanize them to create an approachable plan personalized to their own pace. Well-known elements of cognitive behavior therapy such as monitoring of symptoms and the contexts in which these symptoms arise help individuals to develop an understanding of the factors that maintain their food avoidance and further individualize their treatment strategy.' Nancy Zucker, Ph.D., Director, Duke Center for Eating Disorders, Associate Director, Graduate Studies in Psychology and Neuroscience, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science'Although officially recognized as a diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association in the DSM-5 in 2013, ARFID is still both misunderstood and underappreciated. This important new book will be an invaluable resource for both health care professionals as well as individuals seeking to understand the 'picky' eating habits of themselves or those they care for. It takes a scholarly evidence-based approach, but conveys the important information in accessible language with practical tools and constructive advice. It's an invaluable addition to the body of knowledge in the field of eating disorders.' Elissa Myers, CAE, IOM, MA, Executive Director, Academy for Eating Disorders'Written by ARFID experts, this engaging and pragmatic self-help book walks you, step-by-step, through the process of identifying ARFID, understanding it, and implementing effective strategies for treatment. It will undoubtedly increase access to care for those who might not otherwise seek treatment or have access to ARFID-trained clinicians. Not only is this evidence-based self-help program accessible and easy to implement for individuals struggling with ARFID it is also an excellent resource for both novice and seasoned professionals. Positive and encouraging, this book offers examples and materials to keep you focused and engaged as you work toward your treatment goals. Whether you are seeking support for yourself or a loved one, this book will deliver! Bravo to the authors for pouring their experience, wisdom, and passion for treating ARFID into this resource.' Jennifer D. Lundgren, Ph.D., FAED, Professor of Psychology, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri'Drs. Thomas, Becker and Eddy are leading figures in providing the eating disorders field with much-needed information about the etiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of ARFID. To this end, they were first to publish a clinician manual on this condition and with the publication of this self-help guide, they have taken another significant step toward addressing the needs of ARFID sufferers (and their carers). This easily accessible e-book provides a step-by-step guide, based on currently available evidence, to support the sufferer in their recovery. It is not just a resource for those with a diagnosis of ARFID but will also be most helpful to those who are trying to provide support to those struggling with this eating disorder, whether a parent, other loved one, or a clinician.' Daniel Le Grange, Ph.D., FAED Benioff UCSF Professor, Children's Health, and Director, Eating Disorders Program, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco'I am excited to enthusiastically recommend The Picky Eater's Recovery Book by Thomas, Becker and Eddy. The overall approach described in the book is based in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)-an evidence-based approach for eating disorders-and incorporates key elements of CBT such as the use of a personalized model, self-monitoring, regularizing eating patterns, and exposure and behavioral experiments. These methods are illustrated through clinical vignettes of the three major types of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)-sensory sensitivity, fear of adverse consequences, and low appetite. This self-help manual is clearly written and includes figures, tables, and other helpful learning tools that readers will find useful when implementing it. This book will undoubtedly be helpful for many adults with ARFID. It is practical, clinically informed, and a pleasure to read.' Book SynopsisThis book presents principles and methods for working with emotion in psychotherapy to address the core maladaptive processes that cause anxiety, depression, and other common clinical disorders.Trade ReviewConceptually brilliant, clinically bold, and empirically persuasive, this book is pure Greenberg—perhaps today’s most well-rounded and accomplished scholar, researcher, practitioner, and trainer in psychotherapy. -- Louis G. Castonguay, PhD, Liberal Arts Professor of Psychology, Penn State University, University Park, PAIn this book, Leslie Greenberg, one of the world’s leading experts, presents a deep and insightful view of how to work with emotion in psychotherapy. This is a book for all practicing therapists, as well as for those who teach psychotherapy and those who do research on psychotherapy. The author presents a unique, research-based model of how working with emotion creates change. I particularly liked the chapters that dealt with therapist skills. It gives a sophisticated and insightful view of the roles of therapist empathy and self disclosure. It also includes important sections on dealing with culture and systemic racism. It will be useful to therapists of all persuasions. I plan to use it in my classes. -- Arthur C. Bohart, PhD, Professor Emeritus, California State University Dominguez HillsLeslie Greenberg has long been a source of some of the most important and generative ideas in our field. At a time when psychotherapy is sometimes reduced to an arid overemphasis on cognition, Greenberg points our attention to experience and emotion. This book is rigorously grounded in research and amply filled with rich nuggets for the clinician. -- Paul L. Prometheus Books Predators: Who They Are and How to Stop Them
Book SynopsisMost of us only half-listen to the public service announcements about safety in the home. We lock our doors at night, but do little else to change habits that may make us the next victims of the dangerous individuals who are always on the watch for their next opportunity. This updated paperback edition takes readers through the mindset of predatory criminals - their motives, various plans of attack, and way of thinking - and then teaches simple lifestyle techniques that will help reduce the risk of becoming victimized. Featuring a new chapter on how the Internet and social media has radically changed how some predators operate, criminal behavior specialists Greg Cooper and Mike King provide expert analysis based on real-life cases, in addition to moving insights from victims and criminals themselves. The authors make the point that the people who commit these crimes aren't much different from the predators of the wild, preying on the weak and unsuspecting. What makes these individuals more dangerous than their instinctive wildlife counterparts, however, is that they consciously choose to inflict their will on the more vulnerable members of their own species. To protect our loved ones and ourselves requires that we truly educate ourselves about the predators who live in our society and then take appropriate action. This excellent, in-depth study will help readers lead safer lives.Trade Review""In an absolutely riveting manner, criminal behavior specialists Cooper and King delve into the mind-sets of predatory criminals and suggest simple lifestyle techniques to help reduce the risk of victimization....while readers may get knots in their stomachs, they are bound to find information that will help them live safer lives. Highly recommended for all libraries." LIBRARY JOURNAL“This is a landmark book. It is powerful and compelling as well as practical. [The authors] draw on an extensive background in profiling to dissect the world of the predator and show us how to stop them. Deserves a place on everyone's bookshelf. It is a must read." Oxford University Press The Globalization of Addiction
Book Synopsis''The Globalization of Addiction'' presents a radical rethink about the nature of addiction. Scientific medicine has failed when it comes to addiction. There are no reliable methods to cure it, prevent it, or take the pain out of it. There is no durable consensus on what addiction is, what causes it, or what should be done about it. Meanwhile, it continues to increase around the world. This book argues that the cause of this failure to control addiction is that the conventional wisdom of the 19th and 20th centuries focused too single-mindedly on the afflicted individual addict. Although addiction obviously manifests itself in individual cases, its prevalence differs dramatically between societies. For example, it can be quite rare in a society for centuries, and then become common when a tribal culture is destroyed or a highly developed civilization collapses. When addiction becomes commonplace in a society, people become addicted not only to alcohol and drugs, but to a thousand other destructive pursuits: money, power, dysfunctional relationships, or video games. A social perspective on addiction does not deny individual differences in vulnerability to addiction, but it removes them from the foreground of attention, because social determinants are more powerful. This book shows that the social circumstances that spread addiction in a conquered tribe or a falling civilisation are also built into today''s globalizing free-market society. A free-market society is magnificently productive, but it subjects people to irresistible pressures towards individualism and competition, tearing rich and poor alike from the close social and spiritual ties that normally constitute human life. People adapt to their dislocation by finding the best substitutes for a sustaining social and spiritual life that they can, and addiction serves this function all too well. The book argues that the most effective response to a growing addiction problem is a social and political one, rather than an individual one. Such a solution would not put the doctors, psychologists, social workers, policemen, and priests out of work, but it would incorporate their practices in a larger social project. The project is to reshape society with enough force and imagination to enable people to find social integration and meaning in everyday life. Then great numbers of them would not need to fill their inner void with addictions.Trade ReviewAlexander's watershed study could not be more timely. Mainstream commentators, who are now grasping for explanations for an epidemic of dangerous addictions, will find it indispensible. * Catholic Herald *This immensely important and original book will completely reframe your understanding of the wider social, historical, economic and cultural context of addiction * The Scientific and Medical Network *This is, without a doubt, the most intriguing and painstaking book on addiction I have read for some time..."The Globalisation of Addiction" is scholarly, meticulously researched, passionately critical of the free-market economy, biased, speculative, selective, and quite wonderful...highly recommended...this is one of the most remarkable addiction texts of the decade. * John B. WW Norton & Co Restoring Resilience
Book SynopsisCultivating what is right, rather than focusing on what is wrong, for therapy that works.Trade Review"Restoring Resilience provides an innovative and convincing roadmap to optimize clients' resilience through the clinical interaction. Embedded in Russell's model is an understanding that resilience is a core component of the healthy individual that, as a construct, mirrors the physiological construct of homeostasis. Similar to homeostasis, the self has a natural range around a set point that optimizes reactions to challenges. The expanded range around a set point is Russell's definition of resilience and the goal of psychotherapy. Russell's intellectual agility shines through as she deconstructs clinical vignettes from emotional, historical, interpersonal, and neuroscience perspectives." -- Stephen Porges, PhD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; author of The Polyvagal Theory "In this wonderfully rich synthesis of theory, science, and clinical application, Eileen Russell takes us on an insightful and inspiring exploration of how the process of therapy can be deepened and enhanced when resilience, rather than psychopathology, becomes our focus. It is a must read for any clinician interested in more readily and reliably recognizing and making optimal use of our clients' innate capacity for healing and transformation. I highly recommend it." -- Ronald J. Frederick, PhD, psychologist; author of Living Like You Mean It "As someone who has researched the positive effects of learning AEDP on the person of the therapist, I welcome Russell's book. Through ample case examples, annotated transcripts, and eloquent disquisition, Russell enables the reader to understand and experience how resilience-oriented work enlivens stuck clients and stuck therapists. Whether AEDP is your home theory or not, you will find clinical wisdom and, I dare say, inspiration within its pages." -- Hanna Levenson, PhD, Professor, Wright Institute; author of Brief Dynamic Therapy: An Attachment-based, Experiential Approach

Russell, Jassi, and Johnston should be congratulated for filling a critical gap in the literature by crafting an evidence-based adaptation of cognitive-behavioral therapy for supporting individuals with autism and co-occurring OCD. The text is clear, informed by the latest scientific findings, and will successfully disseminate established interventional approaches to practicing clinicians. -- Eric Storch, Ph.D., McIngvale Presidential Endowed Chair & Professor, Vice Chair & Head of Psychology, Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of MedicineThe authors provide a clear, concise guide to the puzzle of OCD and ASD. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and
Book SynopsisTony Attwood's guide will assist parents and professionals with the identification, treatment and care of both children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome. The book provides a description and analysis of the unusual characteristics of the syndrome and practical strategies to reduce those that are most conspicuous or debilitating. Beginning with a chapter on diagnosis, including an assessment test, the book covers all aspects of the syndrome from language to social behaviour and motor clumsiness, concluding with a chapter based on the questions most frequently asked by those who come into contact with individuals with this syndrome.Covering the available literature in full, this guide brings together the most relevant and useful information on Asperger's Syndrome, incorporating case studies from the author's own practical experience as a Clinical Psychologist, with examples of, and numerous quotations from people with Asperger's Syndrome.Trade Review… it describes the syndrome and its practical implications better than any other I have seen. I can only quote Lorna Wing's praise for Tony Attwood's "leap into the minds of people with Asperger's syndrome" in the introduction…this is the book for giving to parents and professionals in the field for understanding the syndrome and its implications. In my practice, I place considerable emphasis on helping parents and professionals to understand Asperger's syndrome and by using this understanding to work with affected individuals. I strongly recommend this book as an adjunct to diagnostic explanations and discussions of the syndrome's implications. For the practising clinician working with individuals with Asperger's syndrome this book is a must. -- Journal of Child Psychology and PsychiatryAsperger's Syndrome provides much helpful information about the characteristics of this disorder and strategies for learning skills acquired so easily by others, but with much difficulty by the person with AS. It is an excellent guide that does not rely on scientific terminology for explanations. Chapters on social behaviour, language, interests, routines, physical clumsiness, cognition and sensory sensitivity are written in a very basic language, yet they are quite detailed and informative. Each chapter includes a brief and handy summary of strategies both parents and teachers will find helpful when dealing with children with this disorder. -- NAMI AdvocateAttwood injects a positive note about people with this puzzling syndrome and I found his depth of knowledge and practical experience of people with Asperger's Syndrome, as a parent, a very positive outlook…The section on Frequently asked Questions was better than having a private consultation with a specialist and gave one the sensation of being part of a well informed support group. -- Journal of Learning Disabilities for Nursing, Health and Social CareOne of the leading figures on the lecture circuit, Attwood has written extensively on Asperger's Syndrome and HFA. Despite age, this book still offers tremendous insight into the identification and treatment of children on the higher functioning end of ASD…essential for libraries. -- Library JournalTony Attwood is not only an inspiring presenter; he is also an inspiring writer. Tony you have done it again! You have produced another bestseller on Asperger's syndrome. Tony's new book, The Complete Guide to Asperger, is indeed a book for anyone who has an interest or passion in understanding how individuals with Asperger's Syndrome view the neurotypical world. Tony integrates research and practice, highlighting key issues with an abundance of insightful contributions from people with Asperger's Syndrome. His eloquent style of writing is both informative and entertaining. -- Professor Verity Bottroff, School of Medicine, Flinders University, Adelaide, S.ATony Attwood's empathy, knowledge and common-sense approach to describing individuals with Asperger's syndrome, highlighting the problems that they and their families, teachers and carers often face, and outlining the practical and achievable strategies for intervention and education is spot-on. Attwood has achieved the rare feat of describing the current state of scientific knowledge in accessible and understandable language. The book is thus a rich source of information…I'm almost embarrassed to find myself writing such an overwhelmingly positive review, but this book was a delight to read from start to finish. Everyone who works in the field, every parent, and I suspect many individuals with Asperger's syndrome will want to read this book. -- Clinical Child Psychology and PsychiatryWhen my daughter Stephanie was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, I felt I was starting at square one. My daughter had also been diagnosed with a kidney disease at birth but we got the diagnosis when she was 7, and I felt like I had a new child. One name kept coming up during the initial stages of my research: Tony Attwood. His book, Asperger's Syndrome - A Guide for Parents and Professionals was the first I read and though I have read many more since, I can say his is the best one. My daughter's school district was as unfamiliar as I was with Asperger's at first, so, along with other resources, I loaned them the book. The school psychologist said it really helped him to understand and plan a behaviour modification plan for Stephanie. -- Exceptional Parent MagazineTable of ContentsPreface. 1.Diagnosis. 2.Social Behaviour. 3.Language. 4.Interests and Routine. 5.Motor Clumsiness. 6.Cognition. 7.Sensory Sensitivity. 8.Frequently Asked Questions. Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Theory and Practice of Vocal Psychotherapy:
Book SynopsisThe voice is the most powerful and widely used instrument in music therapy. This book demonstrates the enormous possibilities for personal change and growth using a new, voice-based model of psychotherapy where the sounds of the voice are expressed, listened to and interpreted in order to access unconscious aspects of the self and retrieve memories, images and feelings from the past.Combining theory with practice, the book explains the foundations of vocal psychotherapy and goes on to explore its usage in clinical practice and the various techniques involved. The book integrates important concepts from depth psychology such as regression, reenactment and working with transference and counter-transference with the practice of vocal music therapy. Drawing on over twenty years of research, the author uses case studies to illustrate specific vocal interventions, including improvisation techniques such as vocal holding, free associative singing and psychodramatic singing.Vocal Psychotherapy highlights the value of voice work as an integral part of the psychotherapeutic process and provides a model of advanced clinical work that will be essential reading for music and creative arts therapists.Trade ReviewI highly recommend this book. I hope that it will help readers to focus on the human voice as an important instrument within music therapy, and that it will be an inspiration for other music therapists to do as Austin has done - to write about their vocal approaches in their clinical work. There is a tremendous need for a range of different approaches to be described as well as for more research on the subject. We have much to learn and document about the human voice within music therapy: its nature, possibilities and effects. -- British Journal of Music TherapyThis much anticipated publication details not only Austin's theoretical and clinical practice, but is also packed full of her years of work and life experience. I think it is an intensely personal book and, on reading it, one feels close to her passion and commitment to the work, to music and to people. In the first half Austin draws upon the physical, philosophical, theoretical and technical aspects of vocal work, viewed from the different stances she has integrated into her method. In the second part practical and specific areas are addressed, and specific questions posed about vocal psychotherapeutic work in general. Characteristic of Austin's work, the client is always present and there are case examples throughout, along with her personal reflections upon the ways in which she makes use of her own self in the clinic room, for one of the most valuable aspects of the book is that the songs of the Self in the title are not only those of her clients but also of herself. This depth of the therapist's personal engagement and its contribution to the therapeutic process is a fundamental characteristic of our work, but detailed reflection about this is often absent from music therapy publications. It is well represented here... I recommend to any reader, at any level of practice. -- Nordic Journal of Music TherapyDiane Austin has achieved no mean feat in this commendable book. She does indeed manage to integrate key concepts from depth psychology with vocal psychotherapy whilst keeping it real... how do I feel now about the use of voice and music in the Play room? More enthusiastic, more open to experimentation, in which case, Ms Austen would possibly consider her job done! -- Play for LifeDiane's pioneering work with the voice in music therapy is an inspiring and much needed contribution to our field. -- Dr. Clive Robbins, Founding Director of the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York UniversityTable of ContentsIntroduction.
