Book SynopsisThe fable of the Emperor''s New Clothes is a classic example of a conspiracy of silence, a situation where everyone refuses to acknowledge an obvious truth. But the denial of social realities--whether incest, alcoholism, corruption, or even genocide--is no fairy tale. In The Elephant in the Room, Eviatar Zerubavel sheds new light on the social and political underpinnings of silence and denial--the keeping of open secrets. The author shows that conspiracies of silence exist at every level of society, ranging from small groups to large corporations, from personal friendships to politics. Drawing on examples from newspapers and comedy shows to novels, children''s stories, and film, the book travels back and forth across different levels of social life, and from everyday moments to large-scale historical events. At its core, The Elephant in the Room helps us understand why we ignore truths that are known to all of us. Zerubavel shows how such conspiracies evolve, illuminating the social pTrade Review"Among academic intellectuals, Eviatar Zerubavel--please make that a household name in your household--gleams as a star.... He gathers intriguing ideas for books the way ace foreign correspondents acquire great stories: by reflecting on the obvious, then probing as well as reporting."--Carlin Romano, The Philadelphia Inquirer "Eviatar Zerubavel has always had a remarkable facility for examining everyday human life through a different and richer lens than the rest of us. He notes in this compelling essay that when people block something out of their line of vision or rearrange their memories in such a way as to forget something, they are involved in a personal act. But his main point is that those acts of blocking and forgetting and remaining silent are really collective behavior, a form of collusion, a product of the social world. This is a rare mind at work."--Kai Erikson, author of A New Species of Trouble: Explorations in Disaster, Trauma, and Community "With characteristic zest and insight, Eviatar Zerubavel talks about all those things we are generally reluctant to talk about. The Elephant in the Room represents the sociological imagination in full flower."--Alan Wolfe, author of Return to Greatness: How America Lost Its Sense of Purpose and What It Needs to Do to Recover It "The Elephant in the Room is another eye-opening book from Eviatar Zerubavel. Here he gives us a guide to all the many ways in which we fail to see all the elephants in our own living rooms. Brilliant, lucid, and certainly timely."--Arlie Hochschild, author of The Time Bind and The Commercialization of Intimate Life "Eviatar Zerubavel possesses one of the most interesting minds in American sociology. In The Elephant in the Room, he connects insights into how the mind works with a ruthless realism about the functioning of society. The results are not pretty, but they are important, and make for compulsive reading. Zerubavel shows how the sociological imagination can cast a penetrating light on the most important questions of the day."--Jeffrey C. Alexander, author of The Civil Sphere "This is an interesting, thought-provoking, and delightful book. Reading it is easy and rewarding. The writing style is straightforward, with hardly any jargon, and Zerubavel makes rich and wise use of countless illustratons, connections, and associations....I have absolutely no hesitation to recommend highly and warmly this intelligent book--reading it is both an intellectual adventure and a genuine pleasure."--American Journal of Sociology "In a brilliantly ironic tour de force, Eviatar Zerubavel has finally talked about a topic that nobody has talked about so well: those topics that people refuse to talk about despite common knowledge. Once again, Zerubavel displays his extraordinary talent for seeing scintillation where others see only clouds."--Viviana Zelizer, author of The Purchase of Intimacy "Eviatar Zerubavel's masterful work, The Elephant in the Room, offers a profound education for everyone who has ever held their tongue on matters large and small. His insightful--and riveting--analysis of silence and denial echoes in the mind long after we close the book."-- Neil Gilbert, author of Transformation of the Welfare State: The Silent Surrender of Public Responsibility "With characteristic zest and insight, Eviatar Zerubavel talks about all those things we are generally reluctant to talk about. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisExplores the pressures on emergency departments and identifies the burdens and conflicts that undermine their efforts to provide compassionate care to people in psychiatric crisis. This book is for those working in a hospital emergency department, as well as health care policy makers and advocates for people with psychiatric disabilities.Trade Review"Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient is a marvelous work. It shows us the ED through the eyes of the patient. Even more important, it shows us how rules and procedures can be set up that help ED personnel to respect and support people with mental illness during what are often their worst moments. This book should be read by everyone who works with people with mental illness."--Charles W. Lidz, Ph.D., Research Professor of Psychiatry, Director, Center for Mental Health Services Research, University of Massachusetts Medical School "Although more by default than design, hospital emergency departments have become settings where the nation's failures in addressing the needs of people who have mental illnesses are routinely played out. For many of these individuals, the emergency department has come to represent less a safe haven and a gateway to care than yet another affirmation of how a "mental patient" is an unwanted burden. Ms. Stefan's thoughtful analysis of this scenario and recommendations for improvements make Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient essential reading for anyone concerned about the disjuncture between physical and mental healthcare and the nation's urgent need for meaningful reform."--Robert Bernstein, Ph.D., Executive Director, Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law "Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient includes a set of valuable proposals by experts for standards of care for emergency mental health treatment. As an overview of current conditions and futures directions, [this] book will serve as a valuable handbook and reference handbook for clinicians who work in emergency settings, for emergency room physicians, for health planners, and for attorneys and other advocates who work with persons with serious mental illness."-- Robert M. Factor, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director, Emergency Services, Mental Health Center of Dane County "...a concise yet comprehensive discussion of these various problems and challenges from both a macro and micro level...it is an excellent work...appropriately organized and clearly written and consider it a must-read for health care professionals across disciplines who practice in the area of emergency medicine."--PsycCRITIQUES "Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient is a marvelous work. Trade ReviewWinner of the Media Ecology Association's 2010 Erving Goffman Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Social Interaction! Winner of the 2009 PROSE award in Psychology! More than 40 PROSE Awards, including the top prize, the R.R. Hawkins Award, were presented on February 4, 2010, at a special Awards Luncheon during the PSP Annual Conference at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. A complete list of all winners can be found on the PROSE Awards website at: http://www.proseawards.com/docs/2009-PROSE-Winners-Press-Release.doc. Presented since 1976, the 2009 PROSE Awards received a record-breaking 441 entries--more than ever before in its 34-year history-- from more than 60 professional and scholarly publishers across the country. "A marvelously likeable book, Relational Being faces us with an urgent and profound challenge. Jettisoning individualism entirely, Gergen demonstrates the sense and virtue of understanding all aspects of human reality through the lens of relationship. This argument for a new Enlightenment is a brave and passionate tour de force from one of our finest social scientists."--Benjamin Bradley, Chair, Psychology and Director, CSU Degree Initiative, Charles Sturt University "Relational Being is a milestone on the road toward the Next Enlightenment-- an enlightenment that re-constructs "the bounded self" with an understanding of the primacy of relational being. There is not a "sounding" in this towering manifesto that leaves things as they are. Once we acknowledge that we are interwoven threads in the intricate tapestry of relational process-- in which our destiny is among us as opposed to within-- everything changes. If human connection can become as real to us as the traditional sense of individual separation, then our globally intimate future has a chance-- there is that much at stake in this forward-looking, pragmatic and inspirational Kenneth Gergen classic!"--David Cooperrider, Fairmount Minerals Professor of Social Entrepreneurship, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University "This is a powerful, richly nuanced, evocative work; a stunning and brilliantly innovative pedagogical intervention. It provides ground zero-- the starting place for the next generation of theorists. Relational Being is a stunning accomplishment by one of America's major social theorists, and a visionary work." --Norman K. Denzin, Professor of Sociology, Cinema Studies, and Interpretive Theory, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign "A must-read for scholars, practitioners and the general public, this book gives promise and hope to our planet and our future well-being." --Harlene Anderson, Houston Galveston Institute "Ken Gergen, the most original and insightful social psychologist of my generation, offers a hopeful and fresh framework for scholars and practitioners seeking a meaningful, useful, and creative approach to the cultural, political, personal, and professional struggles of our time. Professor Gergen writes with grace, compassion, and clarity and the story he tells is extraordinarily important and profound." --Arthur P. Bochner, Distinguinshed University Professor of Communication, University of South Florida "...Relational Being promises to be a significant and useful contribution to psychological literature."--PsycCRITIQUES "Simply put, Gergen asks: If this is the sense of self that is afforded, then what does this mean for the lives we live, and the lives we might aspire to live? Relational Being responds to this (impossible) question. The book presents a contemporary and inspiring response to questions about being, spirituality, and the practices and relations of everyday life. Gergen's approach avoids moralistic undertones and dense theorizing to provide a simple philosophy for everyday, postmodern life." -- International Journal of CommunicationTable of ContentsPrologue: Toward a New Enlightenment ; Part I. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this volume, Alex Zautra illustrates how experience with difficult or stressful emotional situations can, contrary to popular belief, be beneficial; for example, our ability to adapt to stress can be improved by experiencing difficult moments of emotional intensity. Zautra masterfully integrates research and theory on emotion and stress, identifying a unique and important role for stressful life events. He offers new insights into how stress and emotions can influence health and illness and demonstrates the wide applicability of this perspective across domains of love and marriage, work, aging and community. By reviewing research on chronic pain, depression, child abuse, and addiction, Zautra also provides new insights into clinical problems.Trade ReviewWritten for both educated lay people and professionals, Emotions, Stress, and Health will be particularly exciting to researchers and practitioners since it provides a conceptually clean and consistent summary of the approach. There simply is no comparable book on the market; since this 'two-dimensional' model is at the cutting edge of emotion research, Zautra's exciting book has no competitions * Metapsychology Online Review *Writing in a clear and engaging style, Zautra presents a well-organized argument that positive emotions have physical and psychological consequences and need to be examined in their own right alongside the negative emotions. His arguments are convincing, creative, and stimulating - and based on sound empirical research * Choice *Zautra challenges us to face the paradox of emotions by reflecting upon our ability to integrate positive and negative in a two-dimensional, relational field * The Irish Psychologist *Provides many interesting and important aspects of how an individual's life is impacted by a variety of emotions and stress. The book is easy to read, and exceptionally relevant to TR (therapeutic recreation) practitioners and researchers, particularly those interested in psychiatry, geriatrics, and mental health...The use of up to date research to support the information on stress, emotions and their impact on health make this a must-have for the TR student, practitioner, or researcher. * Therapeutic Recreation Journal *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisViolent video games are successfully marketed to and easily obtained by children and adolescents. Even the U.S. government distributes one such game, America''s Army, through both the internet and its recruiting offices. Is there any scientific evidence to support the claims that violent games contribute to aggressive and violent behaviour?Anderson, Gentile, and Buckley first present an overview of empirical research on the effects of violent video games, and then add to this literature three new studies that fill the most important gaps. They update the traditional General Aggression Model to focus on both developmental processes and how media-violence exposure can increase the likelihood of aggressive and violent behaviour in both short and long-term contexts. Violent Video Game Effects on Children and Adolescents also reviews the history of these games'' explosive growth, and explores the public policy options for controlling their distribution. Anderson et al. describe the reactionTrade ReviewThis book delivers on all accounts. The authors are widely regarded as the foremost experts on the effects of violent video games and the media, and this book is by far the most signifiant addition to the study of developmental psychology this year. * Doody's Notes *This is a shocking but necessary read for anyone working or living with children or adolescents. ... 15 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite its obvious advantages, our ability to be self-reflective comes at a high price. Few people realise how profoundly their lives are affected by self-reflection or how frequently inner chatter interferes with their success, pollutes their relationships with others, and undermines their happiness. By allowing people to ruminate about the past or imagine what might happen in the future, self-reflection conjures up a great deal of personal suffering in the form of depression, anxiety, anger, jealousy, and other negative emotions. A great deal of unhappiness, in the form of addictions, overeating, and domestic violence, is due to people''s inability to exert control over their thoughts and behaviour. Is it possible to direct our self-reflection in a way that will minimise the disadvantages and maximise the advantages? Is there a way to affect the egotistical self through self-reflection? In this volume, Mark Leary explores the personal and social problems that are created by the capacity for self-reflection, and by drawing upon psychology and other behavioral sciences, offers insights into how these problems can be minimised.Trade Review"Get ready to drop your ego and step into the real world. If you ever wanted to know why everybody else always seems one step removed from reality - Beware - Leary's well researched deadly accurate book, proves once and for all that the common denominator in all your failed relationships is you! Read The Curse of the Self and unlock the door to the bizarre inner workings of the human mind." --Lisa Earle McLeod Syndicated columnist, Lifetime Radio commentator and author of Forget Perfect (Penguin/Putnam)"represents an impressive level of scholarship, presented in a pleasant and accessible way, with anecdotes and touches of humor. Leary is clearly an expert on the topic-I doubt you would find anyone better qualified to write this book." -Roy Baumeister, Professor, Department of Psychology, Florida State University"Many years ago Whitney Houston sang that the greatest love of all was love for the self. She wouldn't feel that way if she read Mark Leary's refreshing and provocative analysis of how our 'selves' cause many of our greatest disasters and disappointments. Book SynopsisTrichotillomania (TTM) is a complex disorder that is difficult to treat as few effective therapeutic options exist. Behaviour therapy has the greatest empirical support, but the number of mental health providers familiar with TTM and its treatment is quite small. This manual was written as a tool for therapists to become familiar with an effective treatment for TTM.The treatment approach described in this guide blends traditional behaviour with therapy elements of habit reversal training and stimulus control techniques with the more contemporary behavioural elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In the first phase of the program, clients are taught skills for stopping and preventing their unconscious pulling episodes. In the second phase, clients are introduced to ACT. Unlike traditional interventions that aim to change type or frequency of pulling-related cognitions in the hopes of reducing urges to pull hair, this innovative program uses strategies to change the function of these cognitions. Clients are taught to see urges for what they really are and to accept their pulling-related throughts, feelings, and urges wihtout fighting against them. This is accomplished through discussions about the function of language and defusion exercises that show the client how to respond to thoughts about pulling less literally. Over the course of 10 weeks, clients learn to be aware of their pulling and warning signals, use self-management strategies for stopping and preventing pulling, stop fighting against their pulling-related urges and thoughts, and work towards increasing their quality of life. Self-monitoring and homework assignments keep clients motivated and engaged throughout.Designed to be used with older adolescents and adults, this innovative intervention has proven efficacy and is sure to be a powerful tool for the clinician who treats TTM.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisIn 1973, the American Psychiatric Association decided to publish a revised edition of their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). There was great hope that a new manual would display psychiatry as a scientific field and aid in combating the attacks of an aggressive anti-psychiatry movement that had persisted for more than a decade. The Making of DSM-III is a book about the manual that resulted in 1980-DSM-III-a far-reaching revisionist work that created a revolution in American psychiatry. Its development precipitated a historic clash between the DSM-III Task Force - a group of descriptive, empirically oriented psychiatrists and psychologists - and the psychoanalysts the Task Force was determined to dethrone from their dominance in American psychiatry. DSM-III also inaugurated an era in which it and the diagnostic manuals that followed played enormous roles in the daily lives of persons and organizations all over the world, for the DSMs have been translated into many languages. The raTrade Review"In writing her magisterial history of DSM III, Hannah Decker has colorfully captured all the personal dramas, the institutional hijinks, the underlying forces, and the pervasive cultural implications. Born of a process that was never smooth or pretty, DSM III was nonetheless a turning point not only for psychiatry but also for how we see ourselves as individuals and as a society. A joy for historians, a must for clinicians, an eye opener for patients, and a great read for anyone." -- Allen Frances, MD, Head of the Task Force for DSM-IV and Professor Emeritus and Former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, Duke University "[This] is a landmark work in the history of psychiatry. DSM-III both produced and reflected profound changes in the field of psychiatry whose import-for better and for worse-still reverberates. To my knowledge, this is the first book-length treatise documenting in extra-ordinary detail the process-warts and all-of the making of a psychiatric classification...In fine detail, the author helps us understand why the makers of DSM-III could not come up with a good working definition of 'mental illness,' and even a good working definition of the term they eventually used, 'Mental Disorder.' Tensions among biological, cultural, psychodynamic, and sociological perspectives are an important part of the story of what is so complex, enriching and frustrating in psychiatry... The Making of DSM-III® will remain a perennial guide to understanding much of the complexity of the field of mental health and mental illness." -- Bennett Simon, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School "Decker beautifully details psychiatry's major shift of modern times. She describes very clearly for the reader the science, the culture, and the politics that produced the foundation of present-day psychiatry." -- Roger Peele MD, Secretary, American Psychiatric Association and Member DSM-5 Task Force "Everyone is aware of the significance of the publication of DSM 5 and its capacity to make and break both research and treatment programs. We know this because of the earthquake that was DSM III. Hannah Decker's book brings out how momentous this earthquake was and just what a contested field mental health is. Her account will be widely read and vigorously debated." -- David Healy, MD, FRCPsych, Author of Pharmageddon, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Cardiff, Wales "Dr. Decker's work is important in understanding the context and controversies that surround the DSM, which continue to this day with the recent release of DSM-V. This book will be of interest to people interested in the history of medicine and psychiatry, clinicians and researchers in any mental health discipline, and anyone who is interested in ongoing debates about the field of psychiatry." -- Debbie Sorensen, New Books in Psychology "This book is the most objective and well-documented history of DSM-III; it deserves wide readership." --Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica "The DSM - lll grew out of a conscious plan to help the field of psychiatry become more medically oriented. The story about the personalities of the people who made this happen and the politics surrounding the acceptance of DSM - III by the American Psychiatric Association makes for fascinating reading. Hannah Decker is an historian, and the research for this work is comprehensive. The writing is flawless. The photographs of the protagonists are wonderful. People interested in field of psychiatry can gain an excellent historical appreciation of this rapidly evolving field by reading this magnificent book by Hannah Decker." --Eugene H. Rubin, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Psychiatry, Washington University in St. Louis - School of Medicine "...very engaging." --The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease "Decker offers a refreshing dose of realism about how these manuals have been developed, explaining why decisions were made, but presenting them forthrightly as decisions rather than discoveries." --MetapsychologyTable of ContentsCONTENTS ; Illustrations ; INTRODUCTION ; Section I: The History ; 1. Book SynopsisStorytelling and metaphor are among the most effective and useful tools therapists can use to better identify with their clients, clearly explain a disorder to family members, and introduce new treatment options. Based on years of clinical work with clients with OCD and their families, OCD Treatment Through Storytelling contains dozens of stories that therapists can adapt and employ in their own practices to explain hard-to-grasp aspects of OCD and its most effective treatment, Exposure and Response Prevention. Through Allen Weg''s engaging narratives, an experience at Toronto''s CN Tower becomes a lesson about OCD treatment; a popular science fiction film is a parable on how clients can overcome fears and phobias. Entertaining and accessible, these stories-some autobiographical, some universal-each illuminate a feeling, a strategy, a dynamic, or an intervention relevant to OCD or its treatment. Stories become methods of instruction and engagement in treatment, creating a solid foundatTrade Review"This is the most creative book I have read in years on OCD. It offers experienced as well as novice clinicians a totally new way of understanding and explaining the phenomenology and the cognitive behavioral treatment of OCD. I believe that many patients will feel more understood, benefit and be more likely to engage in anxiety provoking treatments by utilizing these wonderful stories."--Fugen Neziroglu, Ph.D., ABBP, Clinical Director, Bio-Behavioral Institute, Great Neck, NY and author of Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual "Dr. Weg has produced a masterpiece that shows clinicians innovative ways to teach patients and their family members about the complexities of OCD. I highly recommend this book. It is entertaining and teaches a very useful way of communicating the difficult and often very frightening aspects of OCD symptoms and treatment."--Michael Jenike, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Founder of the OCD Clinical and Research program, Harvard Medical School and Founder of the OCD Institute, McLean Hospital "Human beings have been passing along vital knowledge via the use of stories ever since they began to speak. Dr. Weg's ability to accurately conceptualize and communicate the most important and practical concepts of OCD and its treatment falls neatly into this tradition. And very helpful and informative stories they are, too. I'm sure I will use some of them myself, in my own work."--Fred Penzel, Ph.D., Executive Director, Western Suffolk Psychological Services, Huntington, New York "Weg's use of story telling technique teaches us that complex ideas based in theories of behavior change can be conveyed to patients in ways that are entertaining, illuminating, and even fun. The book will surely entertain and inform OCD sufferers and family members, but it should be read especially by young clinicians who often get too entangled in trying to do CBT 'correctly.' Book SynopsisAimed at beginning therapists and those new to object relations, this concise work introduces the reader to the practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy from an object relations (O-R) perspective in a dynamic and easy-to-follow way. One of the three main schools of psychodynamic psychotherapy, O-R is regarded as particularly challenging, both conceptually and practically. The book presents object relations in a clear and concise manner that makes it especially applicable for regular use in the clinical setting. Moreover, the author writes in a narrative style similar to actual psychotherapy supervision; dialogues between a therapist and a fictitious patient appear throughout the book to illustrate common clinical situations. Designed to complement actual training in psychotherapy, the book suggests ways in which the therapist can incorporate object relations tools with other forms of therapy, regardless of the clinical setting. Ideal for students, trainees, and clinicians in psychiatry,Trade Review"This is a wonderfully practical and accessible book on conducting psychotherapy from an object relations perspective...The Little Psychotherapy Book is a useful text for all students of psychotherapy who want to learn the basics of object relations theory and how to incorporate this approach into their treatments." --American Journal of Psychiatry "Throughout the text, Dr Frankland successfully demysti-fies technical terms...His use of the same case throughout the book provides simplicity and continuity, and transcripts that illustrate the progression of the case over time are annotated with descriptions of the therapist's use of techniques such as confrontation, clarification, and interpretation...this book is recommended for therapy trainees who are interested in relational psychodynamic approaches and concerned with putting these seemingly abstract concepts into "real world" practice." --Psychiatric Times "I like brief texts that are to the point and this is clearly one of them. I like brief texts that are to the point and this is clearly one of them. This little book will be useful for clinicians trying to learn the tools of the psychotherapy trade (especially object relations) together with some basic understanding of the theoretical underpinnings...Nevertheless, I do not think that only novices will find this book useful. Many experienced clinicians not familiar with the practice of object relations will find it quite useful as a guide for dealing with patients having serious interpersonal/ relationship difficulties, such as the proverbial borderline personality disorder patients." --American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists "Dr Allan Frankland simplifies object-relational theory and offers concrete advice for the beginning clinician. Throughout the text, Dr Frankland successfully demystifies technical terms, such as "projective identification" and "object constancy," in a way that is easily digestible for the new therapist-all without losing their depth and complexity. Particularly impressive are explanations of Klein's paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions and his application of these abstract concepts to a realistic case example. His use of the same case throughout the book provides simplicity and continuity...this book is recommended for therapy trainees who are interested in relational psychodynamic approaches and concerned with putting these seemingly abstract concepts into "real world" practice." --Psychiatric TimesTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Chapter 1) What Is Object Relations? Book SynopsisSelective Mutism (SM) is an impairing behavioral condition in which a child fails to speak in certain social situations despite speaking regularly and normally in other situations. SM presents a significant mental and public health problem due to impact on the social, emotional, and academic functioning of young children at a critical point in their development. SM is closely related to childhood social phobia, but it cannot be treated in the same way because of the young age of the children affected, their lack of speech in the treatment setting, and the need for significant school involvement in treatment.Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism outlines the sequence and essential elements to guide clinicians through a comprehensive, integrated program for young children who display symptoms of SM. This approach utilizes behavioral interventions targeting gradual increases in speaking across settings in which the child initially has difficulty. The integrated nature of the therapy refers to the goal of incorporating input from the clinician with that from the parents and teacher, as well as others impacted by the lack of speech. Exposure exercises are based on behavioral techniques such as stimulus fading, shaping, and systematic desensitization that also allow for a less intense or gradual exposure to the speaking situation. These techniques are combined and used flexibly with a behavioral reward system for participation in treatment. The approach was developed by Dr. R. Lindsey Bergman as part of the UCLA Childhood OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program. The treatment protocol consists of 20 sessions, 60 minutes each, delivered over the course of 24 weeks. Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism is an invaluable guide for mental health professionals who deliver CBT-based treatment to children and want to help those with SM.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introductory Information for Therapists ; Chapter 2 Pre-Treatment Assessment and Psychoeducation (Parent Only Session) ; Chapter 3 Session 1: Introduction to Treatment and Rapport Building ; Chapter 4 Session 2: Rapport Building, Reward System, Feelings Chart ; Chapter 5 Session 3: Class Chart, Talking Ladder, Exposure Practice ; Chapter 6 Sessions 4-9: Intermediate Exposure Sessions ; Chapter 7 Session 10: Treatment Midpoint Sessions ; Chapter 8 Sessions 11-14: Intermediate Exposure Sessions ; Chapter 9 Session 15: Continued Exposure and Introduction of Transfer of Control ; Chapter 10 Sessions 16-17: Continued Exposure with Additional Focus on Transfer of Control ; Chapter 11 Sessions 18-19: Continued Exposure and Transfer of Control / Review of Progress ; Chapter 12 Session 20: Relapse Prevention and Graduation ; Chapter 13 Additional Treatment Considerations ; Appendix A: Suggested Exposure Exercises ; Appendix B: Pre-Treatment Materials ; Appendix C: Treatment Forms ; References ; About the Author

Whilst essential for the understanding of mental disorders, these approaches have disregarded important questions such as why the human mind is vulnerable to dysfunction at all.The Textbook of Evolutionary Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine updates and expands the previous edition to provide answers to these questions by emphasising an evolutionary perspective on psychiatric and psychosomatic conditions. It explains how the human brain/mind has been shaped by natural and sexual selection; why adaptations to environmental conditions in our evolutionary past may nowadays work in suboptimal ways; and how huTrade ReviewThis superb book covers the evolutionary underpinnings and basis of psychotherapy...a significant contribution to psychiatry and should be essential reading for any psychiatrist in training...outstanding. * Michael J Schrift, DO, MA, College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago *Table of ContentsPART I: THEORETICAL BACKGROUND; PART II: PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS; PART III: SPECIAL TOPICS

Book SynopsisPersecutory delusions, the unfounded beliefs that others intend harm to the individual, are a major psychiatric problem. They are a common feature of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder and bipolar disorder, often lead to admission to psychiatric hospital, and are a cause of considerable distress to patients and carers. However, increasingly it is recognised that persecutory delusions reflect the severe end of a spectrum of paranoia, which also encompasses beliefs and worries about threats from others that are common in the general population. In the last ten years an increasing number of researchers and clinicians have focussed on explaining paranoid experience in both clinical and non-clinical populations, with fascinating results. This recent research is presented for the first time as a book. In this landmark publication, the three major authorities in the field bring together the current knowledge about the assessment, understanding, and treatment ofTrade Review'Persecutory Delusions is an outstanding book that provides a unique update on the assessment, biological and psychological processes, and treatment of this important clinical phenomenon. Freeman, Bentall, and Garety, all seasoned clinicians who have also made valuable contributions to theories of delusions, have assembled world experts on this topic for the first time in this welcomed volume. The state-of-the-art summary of research, theory, and clinical practice related to persecutory delusions make this book a critical resource for anyone seeking to understand or treat psychosis.' * Professor Kim T. Mueser, Dartmouth Medical School *' Delusions have long been known to psychiatry - but have largely been considered a subset of 'psychosis'. However, over the last decade a range of scientists, psychologists, phenomenologists, pharmacologists, and imagers have been studying delusions in their own right, and social epidemiologists and geneticists have been looking for their causes in clinical populations and wider society. This book is the first to pull together these different perspectives under one cover. For scientists and practitioners who study and treat psychosis this is a remarkable resource. Book SynopsisSleep paralysis (characterized by an inability to move, conscious awareness in sleep, and vivid hallucinations) has a history that spans over two-thousand years. However, despite this expansive history, it is only in recent times that a scientific evidence base has accrued. The authors explore sleep paralysis from a range of historical perspectives, placing the phenomenon in a context relevant to clinicians and researchers.Dr. Brian Sharpless and Dr. Karl Doghramji''s Sleep Paralysis: Historical, Psychological, and Medical Perspectives examines and synthesizes theoretical and empirical literature on sleep disorder. With a focus on phenomenology and prevalence of sleep paralysis, the book situates the disorder within cultural and historical contexts. Sleep paralysis is found to be a well-described, REM-based phenomenon with a number of known behavioral and psychological correlates. The authors compile and summarize the associated features, diagnostic issues, prevalence rates, and potentTrade ReviewThis is a unique, superb, and enlightening book on sleep paralysis, a very common phenomenon but rarely written about from a scientific, historical, and social point of view. Anyone interested in how this common experience has affected human thought should read this book. This is a wonderful addition to the psychiatric literature. * Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine), Doody's Notes *The recently published Sleep Paralysis. . . represents a concise summary of the current state of research in medical and neuro-psychology; leaving little to be desired. Particularly remarkable, is that even the humanities and cultural aspects are taken into account, so that we indeed find a "magnificent integration of humanistic and scientific medicine", as Charles F. The authors have done an excellent job in demystifying this fascinating and common condition, proposing the first systematic approach to the evaluation and treatment of this mysterious condition." - Mark W. Mahowald, MD, Professor, Dept. of Neurology, University of MN Medical School (Retired); Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford UniversityDr. Sharpless and Dr. Doghramji have produced an easy-to-read book which provides the most comprehensive and advanced knowledge of sleep paralysis in literature today. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisLike its predecessors, this fourth edition of A Guide to Treatments That Work offers detailed chapters that review the latest research on pharmacological and psychosocial treatments that work for the full range of psychiatric and psychological disorders, written in most instances by clinical psychologists and psychiatrists who have been major contributors to that literature. Similarly, the standards by which the authors were asked to evaluate the methodological rigor of the research on treatments have also remained the same. Each chapter in A Guide to Treatments That Work follows the same general outline: a review of diagnostic cues to the disorder, a discussion of changes in the nomenclatures from DSM-IV to DSM-5, and then a systematic review of research, most of which has been reported within the last few years, that represents the evidence base for the treatments reviewed. In all, 26 of the volume''s 28 chapters review the evidence base for 17 major syndromes. Featuring this coveragTrade ReviewIt is remarkably thorough without being overwhelming. The information is readily accessible and is useful for clinicians who are referring to it briefly, or opening it to brush up on the literature in a given area. But this book's main strength is that the authors also are using an evidence-based approach to psychotherapy for many major psychiatric conditions, an area many clinicians unfortunately neglect in their treatment recommendations. Book SynopsisThe Internet and related technologies have reconfigured every aspect of life, including mental health. Although the negative and positive effects of digital technology on mental health have been debated, all too often this has been done with much passion and few or no supporting data. In Mental Health in the Digital Age, Elias Aboujaoude and Vladan Starcevic have edited a book that brings together distinguished experts from around the world to review the evidence relating to this area. The first part of the book addresses threats resulting from the growing reliance on, and misuse of, digital technology; it also looks at how some problematic behaviors and forms of psychopathology have been shaped by this technology. This section reviews problematic Internet and video game use, effects of violent video games on the levels of aggression and of online searches for health-related information on the levels of health anxiety, use of digital technology to harm other people, and promotion of suTrade ReviewMental Health in the Digital Age is an up-to-date reference work that will be of assistance to any clinician seeking to understand online addiction and the potential for the internet to change clinical practice. * Olav Nielssen, Australasian Psychiatry, 23(6), 2015 *In Mental Health in the Digital Age: Grave Dangers, Great Promise, Aboujaoude and Starcevic bring together technoskeptics and technophilics, who outline potential psychological risks and opportunities of using the Internet. Expert discussions on addiction, violence and bullying are followed up with an analysis of online and digital therapies. The plethora of view points presented overcomes the ubiquitous paragon of risky and problematic Internet use by providing a well-balanced and considered picture of digital technology in the context of mental health." - Daria Kuss, PhD MSc MA BA CPsychol, International Gaming Research Unit, Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UKThe book provides a timely, state of the art collection of highly-focused reviews of intriguing professional subjects related to mental health in the era of new media. Putting together a broad scope of such themes - from problematic gaming to cyberchondria to Internet violence, to eTherapy - grants readers a great academic resource on pathological and therapeutic perspectives of cyberpsychology. By thoughtful and useful organization, the book chapters guide readers in this relatively new field of research and shed lights on relevant psychological, medical, and sociological phenomena. The blend of theory, research, and practical issues covers important aspects of each subject and offers a comprehensive yet deep understanding of the topics covered. Readers from various disciplines - such as psychology, psychiatry, education, and social work - could highly benefit and get enriched by this volume." - Professor Azy Barak, Dept. of Counseling and Human Development, University of Haifa, IsraelMental Health in the Digital Age is an excellent compendium of useful and up-to-date information about a diverse range of issues in Internet psychology, including gaming addiction, video game aggression, cyberbullying, online therapy, virtual reality, plus much more. A team of distinguished experts have parsed a complex and ever-growing bank of scientific literature, providing detailed, clear, and critical perspectives on key issues and controversies, making this work a highly accessible resource for researchers, educators, clinicians, policymakers, and students. A particular highlight of this text is its strong focus on the many significant challenges facing the field of clinical psychology as the Internet is increasingly intersecting with mental health issues - provided with ethical, practical, and objective statements of how to address these issues effectively in the future." - Dr. Daniel King, School of Psychology, The University of Adelaide, AustraliaAuthoritative and comprehensive, a key strength of this book is its systematic coverage of both the risks and the benefits of technology for mental health. An important addition to the library of any mental health practitioner and an invaluable text for students and researchers seeking a thoughtful review of the field." - Professor Kathy Griffiths, Director, National Institute of Mental Health Research, The Australian National University. The digital age promises much for improving our way of life, health, wellbeing, and connectedness to others. Along with this, it is critical that we ensure the benefits are not outweighed by the emergence of new mental health problems related to the immersion of technology into our daily lives. Mental Health in the Digital Age is an important and novel addition to the field, which explores the neurobiology, psychology and sociology of problematic digital media use and its integration into society. Mental Health in the Digital Age covers the spectrum of mental health problems to mental health solutions, all in one place, and provides readers with access to the range of research evidence across this spectrum in chapters that are easy to digest and comprehensive in their reach. - Frances Kay-Lambkin, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia; Centre for Translational Neuroscience and Mental Health, University of Newcastle, AustraliaTable of ContentsContents ; Introduction: www (dot) Mental Health by Elias Aboujaoude & Vladan Starcevic ; Section I: Challenges ; Chapter 1.
