  • Cambridge Scholars Publishing The Psychology of Pandemics: Preparing for the

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisPandemics are large-scale epidemics that spread throughout the world. Virologists predict that the next pandemic could occur in the coming years, probably from some form of influenza, with potentially devastating consequences. Vaccinations, if available, and behavioral methods are vital for stemming the spread of infection. However, remarkably little attention has been devoted to the psychological factors that influence the spread of pandemic infection and the associated emotional distress and social disruption. Psychological factors are important for many reasons. They play a role in nonadherence to vaccination and hygiene programs, and play an important role in how people cope with the threat of infection and associated losses. Psychological factors are important for understanding and managing societal problems associated with pandemics, such as the spreading of excessive fear, stigmatization, and xenophobia that occur when people are threatened with infection. This book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the psychology of pandemics. It describes the psychological reactions to pandemics, including maladaptive behaviors, emotions, and defensive reactions, and reviews the psychological vulnerability factors that contribute to the spreading of disease and distress. It also considers empirically supported methods for addressing these problems, and outlines the implications for public health planning.Trade Review“Dr Taylor has pulled together a wide range of research to provide a clear, engaging and scholarly analysis of historical, social, and psychological factors involved in pandemics. This text will prove a valuable resource for policy-makers who are engaged in public health and management in times of health crises. It will also be highly useful for mental health practitioners who regularly treat anxious individuals, a group particularly susceptible to distress in times of pandemic risk. A true must-read!”(Dean McKay, Professor of Psychology, Fordham University)“In the first volume of its kind, The Psychology of Pandemics addresses the role of psychological factors in understanding pandemics and preventing the spread of infection. Building on his own seminal work in the area of anxiety and fear, and drawing from research from public health, social psychology, epidemiology, and several other disciplines, Taylor reveals the psychology behind pandemics and lays out strategies for changing the psychosocial factors that contribute to the spread of disease. This highly accessible and well researched book is strongly recommended for anyone interested in this important topic – especially those working in the area of public health.”(Martin M. Antony, Professor of Psychology, Ryerson University)“This is an innovative book that offers a comprehensive review of the psychological correlates and consequences of pandemics. The author is an internationally renowned expert that provides an engaging and insightful analysis of complex phenomena. This thoughtful book is guaranteed to be of interest to academics and the general public.”(Bunmi O. Olatunji, Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training, Vanderbilt University)"This is a timely and critical contribution from an author who understands the pulse of health-related anxiety and how to effectively manage it. The Psychology of Pandemics is a must read for researchers, scholars, health care professionals, and policy makers who may be involved in the managing the public in the face of a pandemic threat."(Gordon J. • Return from Madness: Psychotherapy with People

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Return from Madness: Psychotherapy with People

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBy the mid-eighties, the provision of psychotherapy for people who could not get out of bed, bathe, get dressed, prepare meals, and manage their own money had diminished. Treatment centered on case management and rehabilitation. This virtual elimination of psychotherapy made sense economically as well as therapeutically: traditional psychotherapy had little success with people suffering from schizophrenia. However, the advent of novel antipsychotic medications has created a need for psychotherapy tailored to this population. Sudden reduction in pervasive, persistent delusions and hallucinations, and recovery of motivation, energy, volition, and the ability to experience pleasure from something other than cigarettes is a mixed blessing. Patients are relieved of terrible suffering but left with new problems. Shedding the lifelong identity of a mental patient, they no longer need case management but require help adjusting to major changes in their thinking and functioning. Kathleen Degen and Ellen Nasper describe group therapy that helps patients identify and cope with unexpected, intense feelings such as sadness or painful memories of childhood trauma, increase their interpersonal skills, and advance their sense of self beyond that of their label as mental patients. The authors show how to build on the phenomenal changes that the new medications provide.Trade ReviewArgues in a very compelling manner for the importance of understanding the inner experience of patients who respond well to some of the newer neuroleptic drugs and are thus challenged to move beyond the disabilities of chronic mental illness. Using the format of group therapy for patients receiving clozapine, the authors illustrate the remarkable changes that may occur when this novel medication is combined with a sensitivity to the re-emergence of developmental tasks that have long lain dormant. A very timely and helpful work. -- Malcolm B. Bowers, Jr.Return from Madness is a profound and moving book. In the tradition of Oliver Sacks' Awakenings it tells the dramatic story of patients suddenly liberated from lives destroyed by mental illness. Most of Degen and Nasper's patients are forced to organize life around the illness, their psychological and social development cut short by its onset. The authors not only describe the startling relief Clozaril provides for symptoms of chronic schizophrenia, but understand that relief from schizophrenic symptoms demands deep reorganizations of living as the patients resume development and mourn decades lost to illness. This intelligent, compassionate, and engaging book brings us close to their patients' experience. It clarifies the psychotherapeutic tasks that must be accomplished for even so potent a medicine as Clozaril to truly heal. Not only those of us who work professionally with severely psychiatrically disturbed people but any reader who wants to understand the world of the recovering schizophrenic will find a superb guide in this fine volume. -- Robert M. Galatzer-LevyKathleen Degen and Ellen Nasper have produced a cogent and timely treatise on the problems and issues confronting patients who recover almost unexpectedly from prolonged psychotic states of withdrawal and nonparticipation in the world around them. The authors portray the not always pleasant behaviors and circumstances of these long-suffering patients as well as the complex difficulties confronting them once their psychotic state has receded. The case presentations are exemplary, sometimes gripping, sometimes almost whimsical. The book then turns to therapeutic issues inherent in drug treatment and the authors' group therapy with these patients, a welcome success story on the whole. Anybody prescribing the latter-day antipsychotic medications for chronic patients cannot afford to miss this superbly written volume that illustrates the multisystemic needs of patients, an important paradigm for community mental health services. -- Stephen Fleck

  • Templeton Foundation Press,U.S. The Connections Paradigm: Ancient Jewish Wisdom

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book introduces an approach to mental health that dates back 3,000 years to an ancient body of Jewish spiritual wisdom. Known as the Connections Paradigm, the millennia-old method has been empirically shown to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. After being passed down from generation to generation and tested in clinical settings with private clients, it is presented to a broad audience for the first time. The idea behind the paradigm is that at any given moment, human beings are either “connected” or “disconnected” across three key relationships. To be “connected” means to be in a loving, harmonious, and fulfilling relationship; to be “disconnected” means, of course, the opposite. The three relationships are those between our souls and our bodies, ourselves and others, and ourselves and God. These relationships are hierarchal; each depends on the one that precedes it. This means that we can only connect with God to the extent that we associate with others, and we cannot connect with others if we don’t connect with ourselves. The author, Dr. David H. Rosmarin, devotes a section to each relationship and describes techniques and practices to become a more connected individual. He also brings in compelling stories from his clinical practice to show the process in action. Whether you’re a clinician working with clients, or a person seeking the healing balm of wisdom; whether you’re a member of the Jewish faith, or a person open to new spiritual perspectives, you will find this book sensible, practical, and timely because, for all of us, connection leads to mental health.Trade Review “A leading voice in the psychology of religion and its application to mental health problems, Dr. Rosmarin has given faith-based providers an entirely new language for intertwining spiritual, interpersonal, and mental health domains in the interests of clinical care. This innovative volume shows how ancient Jewish teachings on the relation of body and soul can be combined with a broad array of modern evidence-based approaches to psychological care, from exposure to experiential acceptance, from nutrition to interpersonal compassion. There is a significant body of science showing that embedding evidence-based intervention into a spiritual journey is a powerful combination for people of faith. Still, providers need a more general approach that stands one step above the details of particular religious commitments. Filled with clinical examples, this book radiates kindness and empathic concern, and its use of ‘body and soul’ could be effective with a wide range of people of faith.” —Steven C. Hayes, PhD, Originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, author of A Liberated Mind, and Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno “Dr. Rosmarin has done a great mental health service for the general public. With so many today beset by anxiety and depression and tiring of modern answers that feel superficial, The Connections Paradigm offers a profound, centuries-old method to relieve mental distress, enhance life’s most important relationships, and achieve genuine peace of mind.” —Harold G. Koenig, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Duke University Health Systems, and director of the Duke Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health “The Connections Paradigm is not only timely but Dr. David Rosmarin’s careful attention to its rich traditionands practical relevance for each of us is a gift. I am truly grateful for how well he unpacks these three critical forms of connection—Inner Connection, Interpersonal Connection, and Spiritual Connection—with such clarity alongside the relatable stories he weaves throughout this book!” —Holly K. Oxhandler, PhD, LMSW, associate professor of social work and associate dean for research faculty development, Baylor University’s Diana R. Garland School of Social Work “Infused with the warmth and wisdom of Judaism, this book offers a deeply thoughtful psychological and spiritual guide for those seeking greater connectedness within themselves, with others, and with God. Using poignant stories from his clinical practice, Rosmarin illustrates how a ‘connections paradigm’ can foster transformations among people facing the full range of psychological problems. This book will deepen the practice of many providers and the lives of many clients.” —Kenneth I. Pargament, PhD, professor emeritus, department of psychology, Bowling Green State University, author of Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy “David Rosmarin has compiled a thoughtful and relatable guide to help us reconnect with our body and soul. He shares practical instructions supported by theory, case studies,s, and ancient Jewish spiritual teachings to show that we can live more fully when we are truly connected to all our parts. The Connections Paradigm is good for the body, mind, and soul.” —Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Real Change “Jung famously claimed that every patient he treated over age thirty-five needed in the end to find a spiritual outlook on life. In The Connections Paradigm, mental and spiritual health are beautifully intertwined, and Jewish wisdom becomes a stabilizing and uplifting force in an often dark and confusing world.” —Rabbi David Wolpe, Max Webb Senior Rabbi, Sinai Temple “Written in a lucid and graceful style and full of applicable case studies, this book is an authoritative statement on the importance of spirituality in mental health. I highly recommend The Connection Paradigm either as a self-help guide or as a blueprint for interventions by mental health professionals. The cure for human suffering lies in healing the brokenness in a divided self, conflict in relationships, and separation from God.” —Paul T. P. Personality psychologists explore the characteristics and processes that make you different from the person sitting next to you. In addition to presenting the most influential theories of personality, the textbook covers some practical applications of those theories -- for example, in psychotherapy, education and the workplace. Moreover, you will find extensive coverage of what personality researchers have discovered about 26 important concepts in the field -- for example, self-esteem, dream interpretation, social anxiety, gender roles, loneliness and hypnosis. The book also includes 12 personality scales you can take to see how you compare with other people on numerous personality concepts. Knowing how you score on a measure of, for example, social anxiety, provides a personal framework when reading about research on this personality trait.
