  • Encyclopedia of Big Data

Springer International Publishing AG Encyclopedia of Big Data

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis encyclopedia will be an essential resource for our times, reflecting the fact that we currently are living in an expanding data-driven world. Technological advancements and other related trends are contributing to the production of an astoundingly large and exponentially increasing collection of data and information, referred to in popular vernacular as “Big Data.” Social media and crowdsourcing platforms and various applications ― “apps” ― are producing reams of information from the instantaneous transactions and input of millions and millions of people around the globe. The Internet-of-Things (IoT), which is expected to comprise tens of billions of objects by the end of this decade, is actively sensing real-time intelligence on nearly every aspect of our lives and environment. The Global Positioning System (GPS) and other location-aware technologies are producing data that is specific down to particular latitude and longitude coordinates and seconds of the day. Large-scale instruments, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), are collecting massive amounts of data on our planet and even distant corners of the visible universe. Digitization is being used to convert large collections of documents from print to digital format, giving rise to large archives of unstructured data. Innovations in technology, in the areas of Cloud and molecular computing, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing (NLP), to name only a few, also are greatly expanding our capacity to store, manage, and process Big Data. In this context, the Encyclopedia of Big Data is being offered in recognition of a world that is rapidly moving from gigabytes to terabytes to petabytes and beyond. While indeed large data sets have long been around and in use in a variety of fields, the era of Big Data in which we now live departs from the past in a number of key respects and with this departure comes a fresh set of challenges and opportunities that cut across and affect multiple sectors and disciplines, and the public at large. With expanded analytical capacities at hand, Big Data is now being used for scientific inquiry and experimentation in nearly every (if not all) disciplines, from the social sciences to the humanities to the natural sciences, and more. Moreover, the use of Big Data has been well established beyond the Ivory Tower. In today’s economy, businesses simply cannot be competitive without engaging Big Data in one way or another in support of operations, management, planning, or simply basic hiring decisions. In all levels of government, Big Data is being used to engage citizens and to guide policy making in pursuit of the interests of the public and society in general. Moreover, the changing nature of Big Data also raises new issues and concerns related to, for example, privacy, liability, security, access, and even the veracity of the data itself.Given the complex issues attending Big Data, there is a real need for a reference book that covers the subject from a multi-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, comprehensive, and international perspective. The Encyclopedia of Big Data will address this need and will be the first of such reference books to do so. Featuring some 500 entries, from "Access" to "Zillow," the Encyclopedia will serve as a fundamental resource for researchers and students, for decision makers and leaders, and for business analysts and purveyors. Developed for those in academia, industry, and government, and others with a general interest in Big Data, the encyclopedia will be aimed especially at those involved in its collection, analysis, and use. Ultimately, the Encyclopedia of Big Data will provide a common platform and language covering the breadth and depth of the topic for different segments, sectors, and disciplines. Springer International Publishing AG Social Media Management: Technologies and

Book SynopsisThis undergraduate textbook adopts the perspective of organizations - not individuals - and clarifies the impact of social media on their different departments or disciplines, while also exploring how organizations use social media to create business value. To do so, the book pursues a uniquely multi-disciplinary approach, embracing IT, marketing, HR and many other fields. Readers will benefit from a comprehensive selection of current topics, including: tools, tactics and strategies for social media, internal and external communication, viral marketing campaigns, social CRM, employer branding, e-recruiting, search engine optimization, social mining, sentiment analysis, crowdfunding, and legal and ethical issues.Trade Review“This book … is an undergraduate textbook. But I must say that I have reviewed and read other undergraduate textbooks but this one in particular it is really well-written and it is really on the right level. … I want to say that this is a very modern and unique book and it is essential if you work with marketing, social media and corporate management. It will be a good addition to your personal library and for your reading. Enjoy!” (Inspire and Action Blog, inspireandaction.wordpress.com, April, 2017)“This is an easy-to-read book that provides a rich set of both theoretical background and practical examples on the use and impact of the social media on all business functions and departments. The multi-disciplinary perspective of the book is its major differentiator in relation to other textbooks related to social media in management. The book constitutes a very useful reading for researchers-academics, students, professionals and policy makers involved and interested in social media management.” (Marianna Sigala, Information Technology & Tourism, Vol. 17, 2017)“Most chapters end with a self-test for review and a bibliography. Scattered within the chapters are case examples, sometimes questions with potential solutions, and sometimes provocative items to ponder. … There are a plethora of how-to guides to social media management, but this is the first text I know of geared toward nontechnical, undergraduate students in business fields. It is targeted to students in the fields of business and administration … .” (David Bellin, Computing Reviews, April, 2016)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Definitions, Social Media Types and Tools.- Social media Strategy and Return on Investment.- Online Advertising and Viral Campaigns.- Social Customer Relationship Management.- Search Engine Optimization.- Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining (Business Intelligence).- Social Network Data and Predictive Mining (Business Intelligence).- e-Recruitment.- Crowdfunding.- Legal and Ethical Issues in Social Media.- Wrap-up.

Book SynopsisThis new Edition of Electronic Commerce is a complete update of the leading graduate level/advanced undergraduate level textbook on the subject. Electronic commerce (EC) describes the manner in which transactions take place over electronic networks, mostly the Internet. It is the process of electronically buying and selling goods, services, and information. Certain EC applications, such as buying and selling stocks and airline tickets online, are reaching maturity, some even exceeding non-Internet trades. However, EC is not just about buying and selling; it also is about electronically communicating, collaborating, and discovering information. It is about e-learning, e-government, social networks, and much more. EC is having an impact on a significant portion of the world, affecting businesses, professions, trade, and of course, people. The most important developments in EC since 2014 are the continuous phenomenal growth of social networks, especially Facebook , LinkedIn and Instagram, and the trend toward conducting EC with mobile devices. Other major developments are the expansion of EC globally, especially in China where you can find the world's largest EC company. Much attention is lately being given to smart commerce and the use of AI-based analytics and big data to enhance the field. Finally, some emerging EC business models are changing industries (e.g., the shared economy models of Uber and Airbnb). The 2018 (9th) edition, brings forth the latest trends in e-commerce, including smart commerce, social commerce, social collaboration, shared economy, innovations, and mobility.Table of Contents

Table of Contents1 Grundlagen.- 1.1 Instrumente der Elementarmathematik.- 1.1.1 Zahlbereiche. Book SynopsisC. Amting Directorate General Information Society, European Commission, Brussels th Under the 4 Framework of European Research, the European Systems and Soft ware Initiative (ESSI) was part ofthe ESPRIT Programme. This initiative funded more than 470 projects in the area ofsoftware and system process improvements. The majority of these projects were process improvement experiments carrying out and taking up new development processes, methods and technology within the software development process ofa company. In addition, nodes (centres ofexper tise), European networks (organisations managing local activities), training and dissemination actions complemented the process improvementexperiments. ESSI aimed at improving the software development capabilities of European enterprises. It focused on best practice and helped European companies to develop world class skills and associated technologies to build the increasingly complex and varied systems needed to compete in the marketplace. The dissemination activities were designed to build a forum, at European level, to exchange information and knowledge gained within process improvement ex periments. Their major objective was to spread the message and the results of experiments to awider audience, through a variety ofdifferent channels. The European Experience Exchange ~UR~X) project has been one ofthese dis semination activities within the European Systems and Software Initiative.~UR~)( has collected the results of practitioner reports from numerous workshops in Europe and presents, in this series of books, the results of Best Practice achieve ments in European Companies over the last few years.Table of ContentsI SPI, ESSI, 1 in stock

Book Synopsis"A reader's first impression on leafing through this book is of the large number of graphs and diagrams, used to illustrate shapes of distributions...and to show real data examples in various ways. A closer reading reveals a nice mix of theory and applications, with the copious graphical illustrations alluded to. Such a mixture is of course dear to the heart of the applied probabilist/statistician, and should impress even the most ardent theorists." --MATHEMATICAL REVIEWSTrade ReviewFrom the reviews: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN STATISTICAL ASSOCIATION "…excellent, comprehensive treatise on the subject of extremal events modeling. The authors have responded well to the demands of extreme value practitioners for such a text. Although it was clearly and admittedly motivated by practical questions of workers in finance, insurance, and reinsurance, [the book] contains the mathematical rigor and generality that will interest the extreme value theoretician…An understanding of modes of convergence, specifically weak convergence, is essential to fully appreciate the text, but the authors’ intuitive writing style makes most of the basic ideas accessible even to the uninitiated…The authors do an excellent job of organizing these topics and also provide a very useful 20-page ‘Reader Guidelines’ section…[the book] makes an excellent contribution to unifying important concepts in extreme value theory and modeling of extremal events. Aside from its obvious use as a reference for practitioners and theoreticians alike, this text may be used to teach a graduate-level course in mathematical finance or a special topics course in stochastic processes with or without a financial emphasis…As the authors point out this may not be the kind of book that you want to tackle form cover to cover initially, but it is my bet you will eventually discover that you have done just that as you repeatedly reference this hefty volume throughout the years." MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS/MATHSCINET DATABASE "A reader's first impression on leafing through this book is of the large number of graphs and diagrams, used to illustrate shapes of distributions, to plot sample paths of various processes and to show real data examples in various ways. A closer reading reveals a nice mix of theory and applications, with the copious graphical illustrations alluded to. Such a mixture is of course dear to the heart of the applied probabilist/statistician, and should impress even the most ardent theorists with the range of applications of the subject. While there are a number of books available which cover most of the topics herein, I know of none which presents such a range of theory and applications of extremal processes in one volume, at a level easily understood by users of the methodology. I highly recommend the book to all who work in the area, or in related areas. (...) The combination of skills and expertise of the three authors of this book is impressive. Their reading covers not only the traditional and classical works in the area but a great deal of the modern development, too. (They give 646 references to books and articles in the literature.) Their book concludes with copious appendices setting out the basic probability theory and some of the regular variation theory required for understanding the rest of the development. Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Modern Actuarial Risk Theory: Using R

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisModern Actuarial Risk Theory contains what every actuary needs to know about non-life insurance mathematics. It starts with the standard material like utility theory, individual and collective model and basic ruin theory. Other topics are risk measures and premium principles, bonus-malus systems, ordering of risks and credibility theory. It also contains some chapters about Generalized Linear Models, applied to rating and IBNR problems. As to the level of the mathematics, the book would fit in a bachelors or masters program in quantitative economics or mathematical statistics. This second and much expanded edition emphasizes the implementation of these techniques through the use of R. This free but incredibly powerful software is rapidly developing into the de facto standard for statistical computation, not just in academic circles but also in practice. With R, one can do simulations, find maximum likelihood estimators, compute distributions by inverting transforms, and much more.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition:"The book gives a comprehensive survey of non-life insurance mathematics. … Originally written for use with the actuarial science programs at the Universities of Amsterdam and Leuven, it is now in use at many other universities as well as for the non-academic actuarial education program organized by the Dutch Actuarial Society. The methods presented can not only be used in non-life insurance, but also in other branches of actuarial science, as well as in actuarial practice." (Pavel Stoynov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1148, 2008)“This book gives an introduction to non-life insurance mathematics. … Throughout the book, the software R is used for the implementation of the techniques presented. Book SynopsisSoftware product line engineering has proven to be the methodology for developing a diversity of software products and software intensive systems at lower costs, in shorter time, and with higher quality. In this book, Pohl and his co-authors present a framework for software product line engineering which they have developed based on their academic as well as industrial experience gained in projects over the last eight years. They do not only detail the technical aspect of the development, but also an integrated view of the business, organisation and process aspects are given. In addition, they explicitly point out the key differences of software product line engineering compared to traditional single software system development, as the need for two distinct development processes for domain and application engineering respectively, or the need to define and manage variability. In summary, this is a worthwhile book in an extremely important area." SIAM REVIEWS "(...) Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Feature-Oriented Software Product Lines: Concepts and Implementation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile standardization has empowered the software industry to substantially scale software development and to provide affordable software to a broad market, it often does not address smaller market segments, nor the needs and wishes of individual customers. Software product lines reconcile mass production and standardization with mass customization in software engineering. Ideally, based on a set of reusable parts, a software manufacturer can generate a software product based on the requirements of its customer. The concept of features is central to achieving this level of automation, because features bridge the gap between the requirements the customer has and the functionality a product provides. Thus features are a central concept in all phases of product-line development. The authors take a developer’s viewpoint, focus on the development, maintenance, and implementation of product-line variability, and especially concentrate on automated product derivation based on a user’s feature selection. The book consists of three parts. Part I provides a general introduction to feature-oriented software product lines, describing the product-line approach and introducing the product-line development process with its two elements of domain and application engineering. The pivotal part II covers a wide variety of implementation techniques including design patterns, frameworks, components, feature-oriented programming, and aspect-oriented programming, as well as tool-based approaches including preprocessors, build systems, version-control systems, and virtual separation of concerns. Finally, part III is devoted to advanced topics related to feature-oriented product lines like refactoring, feature interaction, and analysis tools specific to product lines. In addition, an appendix lists various helpful tools for software product-line development, along with a description of how they relate to the topics covered in this book. To tie the book together, the authors use two running examples that are well documented in the product-line literature: data management for embedded systems, and variations of graph data structures. They start every chapter by explicitly stating the respective learning goals and finish it with a set of exercises; additional teaching material is also available online. All these features make the book ideally suited for teaching – both for academic classes and for professionals interested in self-study.Trade Review“The book provides a systematic introduction to feature-oriented software product lines, and leads the reader to more advanced topics in its second half. The authors distill the concepts and principles underlying the field with remarkable clarity, providing a much-needed foundation for the field. They also illustrate these concepts and principles using concrete examples, showcasing languages, tools, and systems from both industrial practice and latest research. (…) There is no better team than these four authors to write about feature-oriented software product lines. The authors have made fundamental scientific and engineering contributions to the field.” from the foreword by Krzysztof Czarnecki, University of Waterloo, CanadaTable of ContentsPart I Software Product Lines.- Software Product Lines.- A Development Process for Feature-Oriented Product Lines.- Part II Variability Implementation.- Basic Concepts, Classification, and Quality Criteria.- Classic, Language-Based Variability Mechanisms.- Classic, Tool-Driven Variability Mechanisms.- Advanced, Language-Based Variability Mechanisms.- Advanced, Tool-Driven Variability Mechanisms.- Part III Advanced Topics.- Refactoring of Software Product Lines.- Feature Interactions.- Analysis of Software Product Lines.- Tool Support.
