Monthly Review Press,U.S. Russia and the Long Transition from Capitalism to
Book SynopsisOut of early twentieth-century Russia came the world's first significant effort to build a modern revolutionary society. According to Marxist economist Samir Amin, the great upheaval that once produced the Soviet Union has also produced a movement away from capitalism - a long transition that continues even today. In seven concise, provocative chapters, Amin deftly examines the trajectory of Russian capitalism, the Bolshevik Revolution, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the possible future of Russia - and, by extension, the future of socialism itself. Amin manages to combine an analysis of class struggle with geopolitics - each crucial to understanding Russia's singular and complex political history. He first looks at the development (or lack thereof) of Russian capitalism. He sees Russia's geopolitical isolation as the reason its capitalist empire developed so differently from Western Europe, and the reason for Russia's perceived "backwardness." Yet Russia's unique capitalism proved to be the rich soil in which the Bolsheviks were able to take power, and Amin covers the rise and fall of the revolutionary Soviet system. Finally, in a powerful chapter on Ukraine and the rise of global fascism, Amin lays out the conditions necessary for Russia to recreate itself, and perhaps again move down the long road to socialism. Samir Amin's great achievement in this book is not only to explain Russia's historical tragedies and triumphs, but also to temper our hopes for a quick end to an increasingly insufferable capitalism. This book offers a cornucopia of food for thought, as well as an enlightening means to transcend reductionist arguments about "revolution" so common on the left. Samir Amin's book - and the actions that could spring from it - are more necessary than ever, if the world is to avoid the barbarism toward which capitalism is hurling humanity.

University of Alberta Press Masters and Servants: The Hudson’s Bay Company
Book SynopsisIn Masters and Servants, Scott P. Stephen reveals startling truths about Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) workers. Rather than dedicating themselves body and soul to the Company’s interests, these men were hired like domestic servants, joining a “household” with its attendant norms of duty and loyalty. The household system produced a remarkably stable political-economic entity, connecting early North American resource extraction to larger trends in British imperialism. Through painstaking research, Stephen shines welcome light on the lives of these largely overlooked individuals. An essential book for labour historians, Masters and Servants will appeal to scholars of early modern Britain, the North American fur trade, Western social history, business history, and anyone intrigued by the reach of the HBC.Trade Review"Blacksmiths, bookkeepers, loggers, tanners, coopers, cooks, sail-makers, interpreters, surveyors, clergy, the list goes on as Stephen marches us through the lives of the early Hudson’s Bay worker. Some were unscrupulous fortune hunters. Some chose to abandon families in England and travel thousands of miles to seek their livelihood in furs…. We also read stories of belligerence, arson, thievery, and murder…. Everything is thoroughly documented using the Company’s voluminous archive." [Full review at https://ormsbyreview.com/2020/10/06/937-verzuh-stephen-hbc-workforce/] -- Ron Verzuh * The Ormsby Review *"[Masters and Servants] is an important and valuable contribution. Stephen has opened a new window into early HBC history, while revealing some of the good, some of the bad, and some of the ugly of a legendary institution.” [Full article at https://reviewcanada.ca/magazine/2020/04/the-human-factor/] -- Michael Taube, Literary Review of Canada, April 2020"In sum, this is an important publication that will be of interest to labour historians as well as scholars of the North American fur trade and early modern Britain." -- Scott Berthelette, Labour/Le Travail 86, Winter 2020"Overall, the book reflects the work of a historian comfortable with the hard work of archival research and with an eye for detail and insightful quotations. In many respects, it does for Hudson’s Bay Company employees what Carolyn Podruchny’s Making the Voyageur World did for employees of the Montreal-based fur trade companies in recreating their values, worldview, and distinctive work environment." -- Michael Payne * Prairie History *"HBC posts were really an extension of early modern Britain, Stephen argues, and are best understood as microcosms of that strictly hierarchical society.... Stephen is a master of the vast documentary resources found in the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives, and he makes rich use of this material to make his point." [Full review at https://www.canadashistory.ca/explore/books/masters-and-servants] -- Bill Moreau * Canada's History, February-March 2021 *"This is a richly textured and deeply researched work. It tells us much about how the HBC fits into the larger British Atlantic world, and how its masters and servants constituted new communities out on the edge of empire.... This will be a 'must read' for anyone involved in fur trade studies." [Full review at: DOI: 10.1080/02722011.2020.1852744] -- Jim Mochoruk * American Review of Canadian Studies, 50:4 *"Stephen’s emphasis on the familial and negotiated nature of the post community is the book’s most important historiographical contribution. His analysis upends older Marxist-informed studies of labour in the fur trade that tended to highlight the classed and ranked nature of the posts." -- Tolly Bradford, Histoire sociale / Social History, November 2021"This study will be invaluable to those interested in the activities and ideals that underpinned long-distance trading companies in the British Atlantic world, and those interested in the experiences and expectations of early modern service. The originality of this study comes from its focus on understanding the internal relationships within the HBC between employers and employees, specifically looking at three groups: the London-based Committee, and in the Bay, the company’s masters (factors) of factories, and the servants who worked in them..." -- Eleanor Bird, British Journal of Canadian Studies, Autumn 2021Table of ContentsEditorial Note Acknowledgements Introduction Abbreviations 1 | Early Modern Contexts 2 | The Hudson’s Bay Company as Enterprise and Employer | 1668–1786 3 | “No Certain Method for Any Thing” | Recruitment, 1670–1713 4 | “Men to Do the Business” | Recruitment, 1714–1786 5 | “Diligent Men” and “Idle Fellowes” | Evaluation and Retention of Personnel 6 | The Inland Experience 7 | Master-Servant Relationships 8 | Tensions within the Household Model Conclusion Appendix Choosing Our Words Carefully Notes Bibliography Index

University of Alberta Press Making Wonderful: Ideological Roots of Our
Book SynopsisIn Making Wonderful, Martin M. Tweedale tells how an ideology in the West energized an economic expansion that has led to ecological disaster. He takes us back to the rise of cities and autocratic rulers, analyzing how respect for custom and tradition gave way to the dominance of top-down rational planning and organization. Then in response came a highly attractive myth of an eventual future rid of all of humankind's ills, one in which life would be “made wonderful.” Originating in Zoroastrianism and, through Jewish apocalyptic works, flowing into early Christianity, this myth produced utopian beliefs that set the West apart from the other civilizations. Tweedale shows how these beliefs became popular among Western elites in the early modern period and eventually resulted in the distinctly Western doctrine of progress. This doctrine, an almost religious faith in the capacity of science and technology to improve human life, released economic expansion from traditional constraints and has led to our current environmental emergency. Exploring sources from philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas, Making Wonderful is for all readers who are intellectually curious about the roots of our eco-catastrophe.Trade Review"Making Wonderful is a vast, multi-disciplinary analysis of the ideological roots of the prevailing “eco-catastrophe” that locates it in certain dramatic shifts in the climate of ideas in European and European-colonial cultures. Martin M. Tweedale makes a compelling claim for the power of ideology and its cultural imaginary in his account of the roots of the ecological crisis." Jason M. Wirth, Seattle University"Making Wonderful stands out both for the breadth of historical scholarship and for the masterful manner in which Martin M. Tweedale shows how a plurality of distinct ideas came together to form an ideational whole whose effects far exceed those of its parts." Philip Rose, University of Windsor"The madness that drove us to the brink of making the only planet we have unlivable for our descendants has its ultimate origin, Tweedale tells us, in the rise of cities in Mesopotamia some 6,000 years ago.... Tweedale’s argument makes a lot of sense." Dalton Watson Fine Books Bugatti: The Italian Decade
Book SynopsisIn the late 1980s, the storied Italian automaker Bugatti positioned itself for a massive relaunch, defying widespread concerns and pinning its hopes on the innovative EB110 sports car. The EB110, which was eventually unveiled in 1991, was the fastest street-legal car of its time and was greeted with acclaim from industry insiders and trade journalists alike. Yet, soon thereafter, things started unraveling: faster cars came onto the market, sales collapsed, and eight years after its relaunch, Bugatti was bankrupt. This book details the car maker's unexpected revival, from the meteoric rise of the EB110 to its dramatic fall, as well as the tales of intrigue and shenanigans from the many prominent automotive personalities who worked behind the scenes. Though the Bugatti name lives on, still signaling the pinnacle in luxury sports car performance, this compelling and confounding automotive fiasco remains an unforgettable chapter in its one-hundred-plus years of existence.Trade Review"No one is more qualified to write the story of Bugatti’s Italian Decade than the irrepressible, prolific, and truly enjoyable Gautam Sen." * Veloce Today *"A very detailed account of a brave undertaking." * Motor Sport *"Sen sources first-hand voices and previously unseen photos to document an era of promising might-have-beens and dashed hopes." * Classic Cars *"This is a supremely thorough book that not only moves the goalposts farther forward but also proffers reasons for reevaluating certain aspects of the delivered canon." * Speedreaders *"A fascinating story that's well told, with illuminating insights from those right at the heart of the adventure." * Magneto *Table of ContentsPREFACE PROLOGUE - FROM MILAN TO MOLSHEIM I - THE BEGINNINGS OF A DREAM II - GETTING IT RIGHT III - DESIGNING THE DREAM IV - COMPLETING THE DESIGN V - UNVEILING OF THE DREAM VI - TESTING THE DREAM VII - MEETING THE PRESS VIII - THE BEST SUPERCAR IN THE WORLD IX - THE BEST YEARS YET X - BUGATTI AT LE MANS XI - THE BEGINNING OF THE END EPILOGUE - AFTER THE CLOSURE APPENDICES BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX

Arkbound Foundation Value Beyond Money
Book SynopsisBack in 2009, a group of people came together to try to create a currency that would change the economic system for the better. They called it the Bristol Pound. By 2015 it was one of the world's most prominent local currencies, featured in the Financial Times and Time Magazine, and even covered by Chinese state television. However, the Bristol Pound stopped circulating in 2021, and in 2023 the organisation finally wound up. Drawing on the lessons learned as Bristol Pound's managing director, the author examines the theory and practice behind many new economic ideas. What really is money'? Can we imagine an economic system that prioritises non-financial value? Can we create a post-market economy? The author's conclusions shape a new narrative and understanding that will forever change how you think of money and the economy.

De Gruyter De Gruyter Handbook of Degrowth
Book Synopsis Degrowth has emerged as one of the most exciting, and contested, fields of research into the drivers of global heating, ecological collapse, and economic injustice. The perspective is both a critique of existing growth-based models of development, which it argues have put humanity on a collision course with non-negotiable ecological limits, and a vision for a brighter future in which humans and non-humans alike can flourish. By putting an end to growth-seeking economic development and boundless energetic and material throughputs, degrowth’s proponents suggest we can build an economy that meets the material needs of people and planet for generations to come. This handbook’s contributions signal the importance of degrowth across multiple disciplines and practices. Along the way, they grapple with some of the most critical questions, ideological assumptions, policies, and social struggles of our time. The handbook approaches degrowth as a loosely knit and developing set of interdisciplinary propositions about what it might take to achieve a world of human and non-human flourishing. Contributors explore, challenge, and critique degrowth’s propositions and its prospects of shaping scholarly agendas, policy frameworks, and social movements. Essays consider degrowth from a variety of empirical and theoretical vantages, including urban design, architecture, political economy, political ecology, critical geography, and political theory. This integrative approach, at once critical and constructive, aims to preserve for readers the sense of possibility that has drawn people to degrowth scholarship thus far.

De Gruyter An Anatomy of Tax Havens: Europe, the Caribbean
Book SynopsisTax havens in offshore lands like Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas were once considered a rarity, the preserve of the super-rich. Today, they are big business available to the masses. Their goal? To avoid any form of accountability. Own nothing. Possess everything. Be answerable to no one. Where are these tax havens? What forms can they take? What future lies in store for them, and why should we care? An Anatomy of Tax Havens: Europe, the Caribbean and the United States of America answers these questions, and more, in the first comparative study in one volume of European, Caribbean and United States tax havens. It examines their simple origin to the extreme forms some take today, delving into the murky subculture that has deliberately made them impenetrably obscure. Uniquely, it combines detailed technical expertise (regulatory regimes, financial crime, legal and equitable structuring) with an analysis of their impact on domestic and global political, economic, environmental and social concerns. An Anatomy of Tax Havens is a fascinating, informative read for a broad readership; from legal, accountancy and tax practitioners to compliance regulators, law enforcement agencies, and students and researchers interested in business studies, taxation, and crime.

University of Tennessee Press The Atlanta Daily Intelligencer Covers the Civil
Book SynopsisConfederate newspapers were beset by troubles: paper shortages, high ink prices, printers striking for higher pay, faulty telegraphic news service, and subscription prices insufficient to support their operations. But they also had the potential to be politically powerful, and their reporting of information—accurate or biased—shaped perceptions of the Civil War and its trajectory. The Atlanta Daily Intelligencer Covers the Civil War investigates how Atlanta’s most important newspaper reported the Civil War in its news articles, editorial columns, and related items in its issues from April 1861 to April 1865. The authors show how The Intelligencer narrated the war’s important events based on the news it received, at what points the paper (and the Confederate press, generally) got the facts right or wrong based on the authors’ original research on the literature, and how the paper’s editorial columns reflected on those events from an unabashedly pro-Confederate point of view. While their book focuses on The Intelligencer, Stephen Davis and Bill Hendrick also contribute to the scholarship on Confederate newspapers, emphasizing the papers’ role as voices of Confederate patriotism, Southern nationalism, and contributors to wartime public morale. Their well-documented, detailed study adds to our understanding of the relationship between public opinion and misleading propaganda.Trade ReviewFrom an accomplished Civil War historian and seasoned Atlanta journalist comes this immersive voyage into a wartime South you’ve never seen before. The Atlanta Intelligencer was the live local news of its day: where Atlantans got their information in real time, from the latest battlefield reports (and rumors) to sensational murder stories. Davis and Hendrick do a magnificent job of letting the newspaper speak for itself, all the while reminding you of the factual distance between what we think now and what people thought then. Fascinating and groundbreaking!" —Gordon L. Jones, Ph.D., senior military historian, Atlanta History Center

Broadview Press Ltd Business Ethics: The Big Picture
Book SynopsisBusiness Ethics: The Big Picture asks students to focus on the assumptions underlying the activity of business. Why does society provide special protections for businesses? What is the purpose of a corporation? What do businesses owe society? And are there some things that shouldn’t be distributed by the free market? These questions are addressed through classic readings from such central figures as Adam Smith and Karl Marx, in addition to contemporary selections from Milton Friedman, R. Edward Freeman, Debra Satz, and others. A number of compelling real-world case studies are also included.Trade Review“This text provides a solid foundation for an introduction to business ethics. Accessible introductions to the sections and to individual articles, combined with discussion questions at the end of each article, make for a pedagogically useful text. The Foundations section provides a concise introduction to different theoretical approaches to ethics, and I am pleased to see the inclusion of a chapter on feminist theory and business ethics, something I have long thought was needed in texts like this. Drawing on classical and new works, the range of topics is short enough to cover in one semester yet broad enough to engage in many of the issues encountered in the field.” — Kira Tomsons, Philosophy Instructor, Douglas College“In this fine volume, extended excerpts from an array of writers are paired with concise introductions and questions for discussion that illuminate the ethical concepts at hand. Columbia University Press The Power of And
Book SynopsisThe Power of And offers a new narrative about the nature of business, revealing the focus on responsibility and ethics that unites today’s most influential ideas and companies. R. Edward Freeman, Kirsten E. Martin, and Bidhan L. Parmar detail an emerging business model built on five key concepts.Trade ReviewSelected by the Notre Dame Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership as a Favorite Book of 2020. * Notre Dame Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership *For over forty years Ed Freeman has been the intellectual leader championing stakeholder philosophy for both the academic and the business communities. The Power of And shows us that the old narrative, which tells us the only purpose of business is to maximize short-term profits for investors, is steadily being replaced with a new narrative that is more inclusive and comprehensive. The new business narrative is about finding win-win-win solutions to challenges and problems, which minimizes or eliminates trade-offs and which make our collective world a better place. -- John P. Mackey, cofounder and CEO of Whole Foods Market and coauthor of Conscious CapitalismIn the twenty-first century, the old story that businesses only care for profits and shareholders and pursue these above else is incomplete. The Power of And shows the way forward, illustrating how businesses can embed powerful purpose in their business strategy, intertwining ethics and responsibility with value creation. Freeman, Martin, and Parmar weave a compelling narrative, acknowledging the complexities of organizations and people and their effect on societies. The book is a must-read for practitioners and students. -- Martina Hund-Mejean, former CFO of Mastercard, chair of the Mastercard Impact FundI've long believed that changing the world of business is the straight line between where we are today and a better world. It’s time for real system change and an update to what we consider business as usual. These expert authors put a human lens on the path forward from a shareholder-supremacy model to a stakeholder-oriented model, and offer clear examples of the changes needed and the companies leading the way. Highly recommend! -- Kip Tindell, cofounder of the Container StoreAt a time when the role and even future of corporations in our society is being questioned, The Power Of And offers a timely and compelling argument that companies can and must take a broad and inclusive view of their responsibilities to all of their stakeholders if they are to maintain their social license to operate in the future. -- Wick Moorman, retired chairman and CEO, Norfolk Southern CorporationThis book clearly explains, in a managerial accessible language, that there is a growing recognition that the business of business is responsible action, not simply profit seeking. The authors use extensive compelling examples of leading business practice, demonstrating that being responsible is the new normal, not a fringe business practice. They highlight how responsible business practice is an asset, rather than a cost. Debunking outdated thinking in a practical way, by getting managers to reconsider what they do and why, they identify how by adopting this approach managers and their businesses are part of the solution to complex social and environmental problems. -- Michael Jay Polonsky, Alfred Deakin Professor and Chair, Deakin Business SchoolTable of ContentsAcknowledgments1. Sheena Iyengar provides a framework. An incredibly insightful work. -- Scott Willoughby, vice president, James Webb Space Telescope program at Northrop GrummanAs a recipe for innovation… I give it five stars. -- Danny Meyer, Founder, Union Square Hospitality GroupSimply brilliant… at last, a method to take us to the frontier of new ideas, and beyond. -- Indra Nooyi, former CEO and Chair, PepsiCoInnovation everywhere, in all domains of human activity, throughout all time – Think Bigger explains them all. -- Kai-Fu Lee, chairman, Sinovation Ventures and author of AI Superpowers and AI 2041The Holy Grail of large organizations is how to innovate. Sheena Iyengar has found it… -- Barry Salzberg, retired CEO, Deloitte LLPSheena Iyengar gives us a well-researched approach to help entrepreneurs and innovators think bigger for greater impact. -- Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, MicrosoftI’ve long believed in the concept of chasing ‘moonshots’ – pursuing ideas that have a low probability of success with a massive upside. Sheena’s concept of “thinking bigger” falls right in line with that same methodology. This book offers great advice for entrepreneurs, and really any business leader, hoping to think and lead in a more effective way. -- Marc Lore, serial entrepreneur and co-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves and LynxThis superb book makes our collective future so much brighter. It’s a shining ray of hope for those who want to take their ideas and see them grow, or seek to be more imaginative and unafraid to have a go at something new that could make a big difference. We dearly need this entrepreneurial and innovative attitude to tackling many of society’s biggest issues right now. -- Sir Alex Halliday, director, The Earth Institute, and founding dean, The Columbia Climate SchoolIyengar inspires the creative problem solver in all of us. * Michael Bloomberg *Iyengar is merciless about some of the myths plaguing creativity. She debunks the concept of supposedly creative 'right brain' and analytical 'left brain' thinking, dismisses 'brainstorming' sessions as 'idea diarrhea' and warns innovators to stay on track…. Her illustrations, from the pre-refrigeration quest for cheaper ice cream to the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, are entertaining, but this is above all an intensely practical guide.” * Financial Times *I like [Iyengar’s] recommendation of five discrete steps to help you think bigger, and innovate more successfully in your business, as well as your private life. * Inc. *By pushing and pulling on the familiar notion that there’s nothing new under the sun, Iyengar accomplishes what she advises her readers to do. She creates something new and meaningful. * The New York Times *After studying innovation for more than a decade, [Iyengar] distilled her thoughts about the topic in a book published last month, 'Think Bigger: How to Innovate,' which lays out a process for developing high-quality ideas. * The Wall Street Journal *If you are concerned about how we can better navigate the turbulent landscape that lies ahead, either personally or professionally, you might want to pick up a copy of ‘Think Bigger’ at your first opportunity. Columbia University Press Common Sense
Book SynopsisIn Common Sense, the New York Times best-selling author Joel Greenblatt offers an investor’s perspective on building an economy that truly works for everyone. With dry and self-deprecating wit, he makes a lively and provocative case for disruptive new approaches.Trade ReviewLike many others, I am deeply saddened by the degree of inequality in our society. In Common Sense: The Investor’s Guide to Equality, Opportunity and Growth, Joel Greenblatt goes beyond documenting the problem to advance a handful of proposals that can contribute to a solution or at least jumpstart the debate. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about these things. It’s not just for investors. -- Howard Marks, cofounder and cochairman, Oaktree Capital ManagementEven Joel Greenblatt, superb investor and lucid stylist, would be shocked if you agreed with each and every one of his ideas for improving the quality of American life. But there's not one idea in these fine and well-wrought pages that won't make you stop and think. -- James Grant, editor of Grant's Interest Rate ObserverThe only thing more appealing than common sense, humor, and brevity is—impact. In this thoroughly engaging tome you will find, among other things, a workable way to break the cycle of poverty (imagine our country without an underclass!) and a bipartisan immigration reform that screams to be enacted. University of Illinois Press On the Waves of Empire
Book SynopsisIn the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, the United States’ acquisition of an overseas empire compelled the nation to reconsider the boundary between domestic and foreign--and between nation and empire. William D. Riddell looks at the experiences of merchant sailors and labor organizations to illuminate how domestic class conflict influenced America’s emerging imperial system. Maritime workers crossed ever-shifting boundaries that forced them to reckon with the collision of different labor systems and markets. Formed into labor organizations like the Sailor’s Union of the Pacific and the International Seaman’s Union of America, they contested the U.S.’s relationship to its empire while capitalists in the shipping industry sought to impose their own ideas. Sophisticated and innovative, On the Waves of Empire reveals how maritime labor and shipping capital stitched together, tore apart, and re-stitched the seams of empire. Trade Review“Riddell shows US sailors struggling for their own emancipation. Especially after 1898, he shows them also as fashioning themselves as white agents of empire. The potential for drama and tragedy is great, and fully realized, in this riveting book.”--David Roediger, author of The Sinking Middle Class: A Political History of Debt, Misery, and the Drift to the RightTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: The Seams of Empire A Leak in the Ship of State”: Maritime Labor Reform and U.S. Imperial Expansion, 1872-1900 Does Exclusion Follow the Flag?
