Emerald Publishing Limited Social Management Responsiveness in Business
Book SynopsisA lot of controversy exists around the contribution of the mining industry and the territorial development of the regions where it operates. Despite the boom in mineral prices, there are still many communities that do not show development. At the macroeconomic level, countries with a mining industry receive income from mining taxes and royalties, however, at the micro level this greater income is not reflected in the closing of socio-economic gaps and the well-being of the population. Cesar Saenz presents the Social Management Model Canvas (SMMC), describing the rationale of how an extractive company can create and deliver social value for communities around and beyond the sphere of influence. The SMMC can best be described through nine basic building blocks - the social value proposition; defining the community; social channels; relationship with the community; key social resources; key social activities; key social partners; social investment structure and social benefits. Companies can map the existing social management model to visualize, understand and communicate the level of responsiveness of the model, whilst using the canvas to explore new social management improvements to get a social license to operate. Communities require companies and governments to address their needs such as education, employment, health service, among others. Combining all these elements in a social management model helps companies consider all the variables when designing and implementing strategies that meet both business and community needs.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1. Emerald Publishing Limited The New Spirit of Hospitality: Designing Tourism
Book SynopsisA ‘new spirit of hospitality’ beckons planetary provenances of leisure and pleasure, to promote tourism destinations through the digitization and cinematic advertising of tourist experience. While releasing identities, populations, and environments from their geographical and political isolation, this new spirit may rob them of their ability to communicate cultural diversity on their own terms. Such changes also affect the professionals who produce aesthetic renditions of other people’s home territories as tourist destinations, often feeding into domestic perceptions of homemaking, with various good and bad consequences for the design of sustainable planetary futures. Through methodological elaborations on case studies, Tzanelli explains that we have entered a new era of tourism and hospitality mobilities dominated by crises of cultural representation and host presence. Triggered by the urge to renovate concept design, the crisis leads to a proliferation of what is just, true, and real, with various consequences for those interest groups involved in the production of truthfulness, justice and reality in hospitality and tourism. The Tourism Security-Safety and Post Conflict Destinations series provides an insightful guide for policy makers, specialists and social scientists interested in the future of tourism in a society where uncertainness, anxiety and fear prevail.Trade ReviewTzanelli disturbs the normative premises on which much tourism and hospitality research are predicated to make space for imaginations whereby the represented can manage their representations, and destination design is co-developed with more just digital technologies. -- Dorina-Maria Buda, Nottingham Trend Business School, UKTzanelli goes beyond the co-ordinates of contemporary cultural theory to contextualise a new “atmospheric” ethos in tourism markets. All of this grounded in a Marxist appreciation of the relation of space to labour and, perhaps the most innovative focus of the book, on the notion of worldmaking borrowed from Hollinshead and deployed here to organise the appearances (another mode of spirit, etymologically justified in Marx’s terminology) of tourism in case studies. As cases, however, these studies are saturated in an astute appreciation of theoretical confluence, from Derridean spectres and hospitality to Hardt and Negri’s Empire, to Boltanski and Chiapello, Žižek, Sewell, that guy Hutnyk and the classics – Hegel, Nietzsche, Arendt. The book narrates a necessary movement from crisis to justice, designing places for care and reviving a new hospitality in an always open-ended inquiry. It will allow you to travel to your own conclusions, taking or leaving the many stops on the way as possible swelling-places or refreshment. Theoretical tourism has rarely been done with such vigour. A fabulous, fun, and flagrantly phantasmagoric read. -- John Hutnyk, Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Travels to Post-Truth Worlds Chapter 1. Book SynopsisMedia coverage consistently features examples of organizations engaging in unethical or illegal behavior. Exploring the definitions and antecedents of organizational wrongdoing, chapters in this first volume probe the role of social control agents in drawing the line between rightful and wrongful behavior, examine the mechanisms and processes through which instances of wrongdoing turn into a scandal, and consider the antecedents of organizational wrongdoing which have received increasing attention in academic research in recent years but that still deserve further analysis. Emerald Publishing Limited Thriving in Academic Leadership
Book SynopsisDemands on institutions of higher education are constantly growing, and recent years, including the Coronavirus pandemic, have complicated academic life in unprecedented ways. The impact of complex and dynamic outside forces, from the pandemic to the interacting socio-cultural, political, economic, and technological factors, calls for strengthened leadership. Yet the 21st century has seen reduced participation by faculty in leadership roles, even though the numbers of faculty globally are rising. Better support is needed to encourage and inspire early and mid-career scholars in pursuing leadership. Thriving in Academic Leadership provides just that, presenting informative and inspiring stories from academic leaders at colleges and universities across the world, including Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Personal and engaging, the stories speak to a broad population of academics, serving as an inspiration and guide for academics who aspire to leadership, or are currently in leadership positions, looking to climb the leadership ladder.Trade ReviewOne of the clues to successful leadership is the ability to sustain a narrative about an institution’s or an organization’s heritage and direction. Colleges and universities are, or should be, mission-based, student-centered, and market-sensitive, three features that lend themselves to storytelling. By relating the vision of founders and the successes of following generations, leaders can use story telling to make complex ideas comprehendible and inspire new generations. To be believable, the storyteller must demonstrate commitment to the institution and sincere reflection on its foundational principles, as well as the context for decisions and choices, while also sharing their lived experiences. The stories of and by these ten varied reflective leaders help define leadership in practice in multiple university settings and culture around the world. It is an excellent guide for those who occupy, or seek to occupy, the helm of an academic institution. -- Dr. Robert A. Emerald Publishing Limited Delivering Entrepreneurship Education in Africa:
Book SynopsisEntrepreneurship education is crucial for economic development. However, its current focus on Western pedagogy raises concerns about its relevance in Africa. The lack of African-oriented definitions of entrepreneurship education may be connected to the limited interest in entrepreneurship as a career in the region. Unlike developed countries, where entrepreneurship drives innovative industries, African entrepreneurship is often driven by survivalist intentions. This raises questions about how entrepreneurship in Africa contributes to the economy without promoting creative innovation. Given these factors, evaluating the role of entrepreneurship education in this context is essential. Delivering Entrepreneurship Education in Africa brings together a collection of academic studies that offer an in-depth analysis of the current state of entrepreneurship education in Africa. The chapter authors engage discussions on how to make entrepreneurship education an attractive field of study for African students. Emerald Publishing Limited Spirituality Management in the Workplace: New
Book SynopsisIn recent years, after realizing that personal beliefs and spiritual development are as important as mental strength, studies in the field of spirituality in the workplace have grown exponentially. The experts here provide conceptual frameworks and guidance by examining the subject in the light of current developments at multiple levels of analysis: individual, organizational, cultural, and in leadership. Furthermore, this book focuses on rapidly evolving business models: remote working, the cyber-workplace, social media, digitalization, etc – all accelerated by the COVID-19 epidemic. The concept of spirituality in the workplace can be harmful as well as beneficial. Employees who are spiritually attached to the workplace may ignore issues known as ‘organizational deviation’ (such as theft and corruption) by keeping the interests of the institution in the foreground. These ‘dark’ and ‘invisible’ aspects of spirituality in the workplace are also examined, with a special focus on identifying aspects of spirituality which can harm businesses. Emerald Publishing Limited International Business and Sustainable
Book SynopsisThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent the leading governance frame with which the international community tries to address complex interconnected global issues. The SDGs were adopted in 2015 by all 193 UN member states and were also quickly embraced by most Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), International NGOs and leading business schools. But progress has proved slow. In 2020, the United Nations announced a ’decade of action’ to speed-up progress in the area. To what extent and under what circumstances can MNEs help in this effort: revitalize the SDGs and rescue the beneficial effects of globalization? Volume 17 in the series Progress in International Business Research argues that the SDGs can be considered the only relevant agenda for progress in the years to come. This makes it all the more important to critically consider the role played by MNEs, as well as explore the way IB scholarship can help MNEs to ‘walk the talk’ on the complex issues that affect the sustainable development – thereby leveraging the future shape of ‘globalization’. The book contains contributions by established as well as young scholars and is intended to stimulate present and future research, create new forms of conceptualizations and provide first evidence of more focused empirical research on the topic of MNEs and the SDGs.Table of ContentsPart I: General Challenges for IB Scholarship Chapter 1. Emerald Publishing Limited Time Use in Economics
Book SynopsisBeginning in 1965 Nobel Laureate Gary Becker realized that shadow prices, which reflect the value of one’s time, may be at least as important as money prices. Implications of his resulting theory of time allocation were not tested until much later when governments began to collect extensive data on how individuals utilized their time. Time Use in Economics contains original research on new aspects of time use compiled by Daniel S. Hamermesh, a long-time path-breaking labor economist leader in analyzing time use data, and Solomon W. Polachek, a pioneer in gender-related labor market research. Emerald Publishing Limited Embracing Chaos: How to deal with a World in
Book SynopsisIt’s not surprising if you feel uneasy right now. In fact, it would be strange if you didn't. The world has become a very turbulent place and it feels like we’re in a state of permanent crises. We are living on the cusp of a new era, in which everything that we took for granted is being called into question. COVID-19, climate change, loss of biodiversity, energy crises, migration and droughts regularly make the headlines. In this ground-breaking book, Professor Jan Rotmans, a global authority on sustainable development and transition, analyses the world through a set of systemic crises: a financial-economic crisis, an ecological crisis, a moral crisis and a democratic crisis, all of which interact and reinforce each other. This multiple-system crisis affects us deeply and confronts us with persistent problems in our vital social systems. These systems are nearing their end and no longer meet the demands that we, as humans, place on them. The systems must now reinvent themselves, but we humans must reinvent ourselves too. That is the essence of system change. Exploring these crises from an individual, corporate and national perspective - including a bold 100-year plan for the future of the Netherlands - Rotmans offers fascinating examples of successful change and encourages us to act decisively and embrace the chaos in order to build a more optimistic future.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Emerald Publishing Limited Mixed-Income Housing Development Planning
Book SynopsisNearly 1.6 billion people worldwide are living in inadequate conditions, according to a recent United Nations report. Local authorities are running out of ways to tackle the increasing challenges of affordable housing. In South Africa, this issue is compounded by historical apartheid and spatial segregation. However, mixed-income housing has proven an effective strategy for alleviating the concentrated poverty that marginalizes certain communities. Functioning as a toolkit for inclusive urban planning, Mixed-Income Housing Development Planning Strategies and Frameworks in the Global South evaluates how this framework meets specific socio-economic goals as opposed taking a broad overview of development. Exploring the relevant policies, planning, and legislation that have guided human settlements in South Africa, the authors consider how best to combat residential segregation, informal settlements, and the exclusive allocation of public housing units to the poorest of the poor. Additional case studies from the USA, Australia, Netherlands, Brazil, Nigeria, Botswana, and Ghana compare emerging building strategies and their benefits, including spatial integration, improved access to social services and other infrastructure, and the promotion of local economic development (LED). Mixed-income housing development has been described as the only way to confront increasing urban poverty and segregation in our built environment. Analysing past projects and focusing on future trends and trajectories, this book acts as both a model for understanding the planning and management of this framework, and a foundation for future research.Table of ContentsForeword; Smart N. Emerald Publishing Limited Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions
Book SynopsisAdvances in Mergers and Acquisitions stands out from the competition due to its focus on three key characteristics: studies from scholars in different countries, with different research questions, relying on different theoretical perspective. Such a broad and inclusive approach to mergers and acquisitions is not easily replicated in academic journals, with much narrower mandates and metrics. Volume 22 of this annual series explores a range of issues relevant to a post-pandemic world– the cost-of-living crisis, energy insecurity, war in Ukraine and rising inflation are pushing many countries into recession, adversely affecting the global economy. This has led, and will continue to lead, to more downsizing, restructurings and inevitably to an increase in mergers and acquisitions. This collection of new and current research highlights interesting behavioural themes as well as timely practical solutions to the dilemma of mergers and acquisitions failures. Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Medieval Clothier
Book SynopsisA clear and accessibly written guide to the medieval cloth-making trade in England. Cloth-making became England's leading industry in the late Middle Ages; clothiers co-ordinated its different stages, in some cases carrying out the processes themselves, and found markets for their finished cloth, selling to merchants, drapers and other traders. While many clothiers were of only modest status or "jacks of all trades", a handful of individuals amassed huge fortunes through the trade, becoming the multi-millionaires of their day. This book offers the first recent survey of this hugely important and significant trade and its practitioners, examining the whole range of clothiers across different areas of England, and exploring their impact within the industry andin their wider communities. Alongside the mechanics of the trade, it considers clothiers as entrepreneurs and early capitalists, employing workers and even establishing early factories; it also looks at their family backgrounds and their roles as patrons of church rebuilding and charitable activities. It is completed with extracts from clothiers' wills and a gazetteer of places to visit, making the book invaluable to academics, students, and local historians alike.Trade ReviewThe amount of evidence presented in this book is staggering. Almost every page contains lucid examples drawn from an array of sources. The book is also immaculately written, with a richness of narrative sure to be appreciated by historians as well as the precision of argument valued by the more economically inclined. What it offers is a one-stop shop for a trade central to the medieval economy. * ECONOMIC HISTORY REVIEW *[A] very welcome...informed, informative and up-to-date study...This is an excellent book, not only for those interested in clothiers, but also for anyone interested in the broad development of English textile history. * TEXTILE HISTORY *The book is accessible to a wide range of readers. John Lee has soaked up all the relevant literature, plus added his own discoveries from wills, chancery documents, and regional archives, to produce a readable, thorough, and wide-ranging survey. * MEDIEVAL CLOTHING & TEXTILES *The Medieval Clothier is an excellent first volume in Boydell's new series Working in the Middle Ages. . . . [It] is a highly successful book that provides an interesting, compelling and at all times authoritative survey of one of the most important trades in late medieval England, making it a must read for students and scholars alike. * EH.NET *The book may be aimed primarily at medievalists with interests in economic history, particularly in trade and taxation, and at those who study the history of entrepreneurship and social history, but the general reader will also be delighted by this appealing, beautifully organized book. * BUSINESS HISTORY REVIEW *Lee's book is an excellent example of clear and accessible research and synthesis and informs a key aspect of the debate on the role of small towns in early modern Europe. * URBAN HISTORY *Provides an interesting, accessible and well-referenced survey. * ESSEX JOURNAL *A very useful account...[It] can be recommended as an up to date introduction to the cloth trade in mediaeval England and is another impressive addition to the Boydell catalogue. * EAST YORKSHIRE LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY *Lee's careful and thorough analysis based upon contemporary sources reveals the lasting impact a single profession can exert over national and related regional economies. University of Wales Press Waging War and Building Peace
Book SynopsisThe British economy altered radically between 1934 and 1947. Some of the most dramatic changes were in Wales as its struggling private-sector-led economy was supplanted by one dominated by the state. Initial changes were barely noticeable as pre-war rearmament had little impact on its economy and labour market yet wartime demands for munitions and raw materials prompted the state to govern an all-encompassing mobilisation that upended its relations with business and eliminated unemployment. New factories employed many thousands of people, agriculture was modernised and metal manufacturing thrived, although coal mining remained mired in crisis. As the war ended, lessons learnt during the conflict helped guide the government as it reconverted the economy to peacetime while retaining a dominant role. This book is the first to fully set out and explore these linkages in Wales between government planning, workplaces and their employees.

He will show you:· how traditional leadership practices are failing· how to keep employees satisfied and productive· how to help employees feel valued, respected, appreciated, developed and cared for· an entirely new model of leadership that is needed to match up to the needs and motivations of 21st century workers· that recent medical and social science discoveries prove it's the heart, not the mind, that drives human motivation and achievementLead from The Heart represents a future where management and employees work towards a common goal and employees are empowered to take ownership of their work. This book shows that when you 'Lead From The Heart', your people will follow.
