    Oxford University Press Advertising

Book SynopsisHow advertising works is not a question that has a simple answer. Advertising is a diverse entity and different campaigns work (or fail to work) in a plethora of different ways. Most advertising persuades people to buy things, but how? And who does it aim to persuade? And how are these decisions made? In this Very Short Introduction Winston Fletcher, an expert with extensive knowledge of advertising from the inside, aims to answer these questions, and in doing so, dispels some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the industry. The book contains a short history of advertising and an explanation of how the industry works, and how each of the parties (the advertisers , the media and the agencies) are involved. It considers the extensive spectrum of advertisers and their individual needs. It also looks at the financial side of advertising and asks how advertisers know if they have been successful, or whether the money they have spent has in fact been wasted.Fletcher concludes with a discussion about the controversial and unacceptable areas of advertising such as advertising products to children and advertising products such as cigarettes and alcohol. He also discusses the benefits of advertising and what the future may hold for the industry.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. • Oxford University Press Leadership

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe subject of leadership raises many questions: What is it? How does it differ from management and command? Are leaders born or bred? Who are the leaders? Do we actually need leaders? Inevitably, the answers are provocative and partial; leadership is a hugely important topic of debate. There are constant calls for ''greater'' or ''stronger'' leadership, but what this actually means, how we can evaluate it, and why it''s important are not very clear. In this Very Short Introduction Keith Grint prompts the reader to rethink their understanding of what leadership is. He examines the way leadership has evolved from its earliest manifestations in ancient societies, highlighting the beginnings of leadership writings through Plato, Sun Tzu, Machiavelli and others, to consider the role of the social, economic, and political context undermining particular modes of leadership. Exploring the idea that leaders cannot exist without followers, and recognising that we all have diverse experiences and assumptions of leadership, Grint looks at the practice of management, its history, future, and influence on all aspects of society. • Environmental Economics

    Oxford University Press Environmental Economics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIf environmental protection is costly, how much should we spend on pollution control? Is it worth reducing pollution to zero, or should we accept some level of pollution because of the economic benefits associated with it? How can we assess the benefits that people get from a less-polluted atmosphere? In broad terms, environmental economics looks at how economic activity and policy affect the environment in which we live. Some production generates pollution, such as power station emissions causing acid rain and contributing to global warming, but household consumption decisions also affect the environment, where more consumption can mean more waste sent to polluting incinerators. However, pollution is not an inevitable consequence of economic activity - environmental policies can require polluting firms to clean up their emissions, and can encourage people to change their behaviour, through environmental taxes on polluting goods, for example. Generally, though, these measures will involve some costs, such as installing pollution control equipment. So there''s a trade-off: a cleaner environment, but economic costs. In recent years, many economists have argued for greater use of incentive in the form of pollution charges and emissions trading rather than more traditional direct regulation of polluters. In this Very Short Introduction, Stephen Smith discusses environmental issues including pollution control, reducing environmental damage, and global climate change policies, answering questions about how we should balance environmental and economic considerations, and what form government policies should take. Including many illustrative case studies and examples he shows that this is an exciting field of economics, and one that is at the heart of many public debates and controversies.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Book SynopsisWith the World desperate to find energy sources that do not emit carbon gasses, nuclear power is back on the agenda and in the news, following the increasing cost of fossil fuels and concerns about the security of their future supply. However, the term ''nuclear power'' causes anxiety in many people and there is confusion concerning the nature and extent of the associated risks. Here, Maxwell Irvine presents a concise introduction to the development of nuclear physics leading up to the emergence of the nuclear power industry. He discusses the nature of nuclear energy and deals with various aspects of public concern, considering the risks of nuclear safety, the cost of its development, and waste disposal. Dispelling some of the widespread confusion about nuclear energy, Irvine considers the relevance of nuclear power, the potential of nuclear fusion, and encourages informed debate about its potential.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Book SynopsisPolitical methodology has changed dramatically over the past thirty years, and many new methods and techniques have been developed. Both the Political Methodology Society and the Qualitative/Multi-Methods Section of the American Political Science Association have engaged in ongoing research and training programs that have advanced quantitative and qualitative methodology. The Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology presents and synthesizes these developments. The Handbook provides comprehensive overviews of diverse methodological approaches, with an emphasis on three major themes. First, specific methodological tools should be at the service of improved conceptualization, comprehension of meaning, measurement, and data collection. They should increase analysts'' leverage in reasoning about causal relationships and evaluating them empirically by contributing to powerful research designs. Second, the authors explore the many different ways of addressing these tasks: through case-studies Trade ReviewReview from previous edition This Handbook contains an extraordinary collection of magisterial articles by many of the best methodological minds in political science. Prominent statisticians, econometricians, and sociologists who have taken an interest in our inferential problems are also well represented. The range is broad and substantive, with quantitative, qualitative, formal-theoretic, historical, and mixed methods discussed in relation to all the empirical subfields of the discipline. Every sect will find something to its taste, and those who celebrate the methodological diversity of the profession will have a feast. • Global Economic History

Oxford University Press Global Economic History

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhy are some countries rich and others poor? In 1500, the income differences were small, but they have grown dramatically since Columbus reached America. Since then, the interplay between geography, globalization, technological change, and economic policy has determined the wealth and poverty of nations. The industrial revolution was Britain''s path breaking response to the challenge of globalization. Western Europe and North America joined Britain to form a club of rich nations by pursuing four polices-creating a national market by abolishing internal tariffs and investing in transportation, erecting an external tariff to protect their fledgling industries from British competition, banks to stabilize the currency and mobilize domestic savings for investment, and mass education to prepare people for industrial work. Together these countries pioneered new technologies that have made them ever richer. Before the Industrial Revolution, most of the world''s manufacturing was done in Asia, but industries from Casablanca to Canton were destroyed by western competition in the nineteenth century, and Asia was transformed into ''underdeveloped countries'' specializing in agriculture. The spread of economic development has been slow since modern technology was invented to fit the needs of rich countries and is ill adapted to the economic and geographical conditions of poor countries. A few countries - Japan, Soviet Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, and perhaps China - have, nonetheless, caught up with the West through creative responses to the technological challenge and with Big Push industrialization that has achieved rapid growth through investment coordination. Whether other countries can emulate the success of East Asia is a challenge for the future.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. • Organizational Traps

    Oxford University Press Organizational Traps

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAnyone who has spent time in an organization knows that dysfunctional behavior abounds. Conflict is frequently avoided or pushed underground rather than dealt with openly. At the same time, the same arguments often burst out again and again, almost verbatim. Turf battles continue for extended periods without resolution. People nod their heads in agreement in meetings, and then rush out of the room to voice complaints to sympathetic ears in private. Worst of all, when people are asked if things will ever change, they throw up their hands in despair. They feel like victims trapped in an asylum. And people often are trapped. But they are not trapped by some oppressive regime or organizational structure that has been imposed on them. They are not victims. In fact, people themselves are responsible for making the status quo so resistant to change. We are trapped by our own behavior. Researchers and practitioners have often reflected on these things, but there is a puzzle. On the one hand, tTrade ReviewFor over half a century, Chris Argyris has been helping those who are willing to reflect on their own behavior to become more effective. This latest work is his clearest elucidation yet of why we fall into the traps that stymie us and how we can author our own escapes. And while he is at it, he provides wise counsel on how to audit the logic of those who purport to tell us the secrets of leadership. * Roger Martin, Dean, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto *Chris Argyris is a master of revealing the universal dysfunctionalities of organisations and the challenges of dealing with them. Here he picks up the theme of Organizational Traps and successfully links them to issues of leadership, culture, and organizational design. Once again Argyris offers us insights in how to understand and tackle them. * Andrew M Pettigrew OBE, FBA, Professor of Strategy and Organisation, Saïd Business School *Argyris has once again challenged my thinking, theories and advice. Despite an explosion of books and articles about how to lead, improve organizational effectiveness and change culture we continue to see well intentioned and competent leaders embroiled in personal and organizational failures. Using decades of research, Argyris shows us the problem; our theories and advice ignore or bypass the hard truth; people avoid conversations that will help them learn about gaps between their intention to change and reality. Argyris argues that this well documented truth must be incorporated in our theories if they are to be robust and make a sustained difference. And leaders must insist we do if they are to avoid spending millions on flawed advice. * Michael Beer, Chairman, TruePoint and Professor Emeritus, Harvard Business School *It is rare for a serious management book to be a real page-turner, but this one is. Drawing on fascinating cases from a lifetime of research on group and organizational dynamics, Chris Argyris shows how our own reasoning processes entrap us in patterns of behavior that we detest but cannot change. He explains how these traps become self-sealing and why even our best efforts to escape them merely tighten their bonds. The provocative strategy he offers for breaking out of our self-created traps merits close attention by anyone who seeks to improve life and work in organizations. * J. Book SynopsisThe motivation for this book came out of a shared belief that what passed as ''theory'' in operations management (OM) was all too often inadequate. In one respect, OM scholars were bending over backwards to make theories from other fields fit our research problems. In another, questionable assumptions were being used to apply mathematics to OM problems. Neither proved a good match with what the authors'' had observed in practice. Successful operations were managed by considerations that were far more straightforward than much of what was being published. The authors of this book codify these practical considerations into a set of ten fundamental principles that bring together a century of operations management thinking. The authors then apply these principles to important topics such as process design, process improvement, the supply chain, new product development, project management, environmental sustainability, and the interfaces between operations management and other business schooTable of Contents1: The Discipline of Operations Management 2: The Process 3: Analyzing Processes 4: Variation, Capacity, and Throughput 5: Scale, Scope, and Complexity 6: Aligning Operations 7: Measuring Performance 8: Improving Processes 9: Coordinating Interfaces 10: The Principles of Operations Management Appendix A: The 10 Process Principles and Subprinciples Appendix B: Jargonbuster Appendix C: The Cost of Inventory Appendix D: Little's Law 204 Appendix E: Push Versus Pull Systems Appendix E: Basic Trade-Off Models Appendix F: The Kingman Formula Appendix G: Capability, Control, and Six Sigma

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCarlin and Soskice integrate the financial system with a model of the macro-economy. In doing this, they take account of the gaps in the mainstream model exposed by the financial crisis and the Eurozone crisis. This equips the reader with a realistic modelling framework to analyse the economy both in crisis times and in periods of stability.Trade ReviewThis new book is almost enough to make me wish I was still teaching Macroeconomics. It gives finance the position in macro that recent events suggest it deserves * Simon Wren-Lewis professor at Oxford University and a Fellow of Merton College. *Carlin and Soskice have produced a gem of a book. The teaching of macroeconomics after the crisis has changed surprisingly little, limiting itself to incorporating 'frictions' into otherwise standard models that failed during the crisis. Carlin and Soskice embark on a much more ambitious venture. They show how the financial cycle and macroeconomics are inextricably linked, with the risk-taking channel as the linchpin. Their exposition is refreshingly original and yet lucid and accessible. This book will appeal to serious students of economics and to all inquiring minds who have wondered about the role of the financial cycle in macroeconomics. * Hyun Song Shin, Economic Adviser and Head of Research, Bank for International Settlements and Hughes-Rogers Professor of Economics, Princeton University *This is, I believe, the first macro-economic textbook effectively to incorporate the lessons of the Great Financial Crisis and to describe how financial frictions can impact the macro-economy. The authors weave together the old mainstream, three equation, model with the newer account of potential financial disturbances in a lucid and efficient manner. As such, it has a major advantage over almost all other extant textbooks, and will be a boon not only for undergraduates, but also for graduates and those wishing to understand the current working of our macro-economic system, beset as it has been with financial strains. * Professor Charles Goodhart, Director of the Financial Regulation Research Programme, The London School of Economics and Political Science *This illuminating book introduces the reader to macroeconomics in a revolutionary fashion. Namely, by means of very elegant and accessible models that are always based on sound microfoundations and developed against a narrative of the performance and policy regimes of the advanced economies over the post war period. Unlike most other macro textbooks, this book builds on the most recent research and debates to teach macroeconomics the way it should now be taught: by emphasizing the interplay between macro and finance; by linking growth to innovation, market structure and firm dynamics; and more generally by taking institutions seriously into account when looking at growth, business cycles, and unemployment and the interplay between them. This book is an absolute must read for students and policy makers, even those with little initial background, who need to be fully acquainted with modern macroeconomics. * Philippe Aghion, Robert C. Waggoner Professor of Economics, Harvard *This is an exciting new textbook. It offers a clear and cogent framework for understanding not only the traditional macroeconomic issues of business cycles, inflation and growth, but also the financial crisis and ensuing Great Recession that have recently shaken the world economy. The paradigm it offers is highly accessible to undergraduates. Yet at the same time it is consistent with what goes on at the frontiers of the field. Overall, the book confirms my belief that macroeconomics is alive and well! * Mark Gertler, Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Economics, New York University *To be relevant, economics need to help society understand those phenomena which do it greatest harm - unemployment, inflation and deflation, financial instability, fiscal and banking crisis. Pre-crisis, mainstream economic models failed that societal test and therefore failed society. Wendy Carlin and David Soskice's important new book is the first step towards redemption, providing students and scholars with a rigorous but accessible framework for understanding what troubles society most. * Andrew G Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of England *The Carlin and Soskice book does a wonderful job of covering the economics behind macroeconomics and the financial system, alongside presenting the latest research on this and the drivers of the great recession. It also has an impressive array of data and examples woven in with theory explained in a beautifully intuitive way. For any student interested in a refreshingly modern take on the financial crisis and the economics that underlie this, this book is invaluable. * Nicholas Bloom, Professor of Economics, Stanford University *One of the first macro textbooks to integrate the lessons of the crisis. An elegant bridge between introductory undergraduate and graduate macro texts * Olivier Blanchard, Chief Economist, IMF, and Professor of Economics, MIT *In the light of the events of the past decade, it is important that a new macroeconomics text attempts to satisfy the demands of those learning and using macroeconomics to be able to access relatively simple models which reflect the ways in which the financial sector interacts with the real economy. This is by no means an easy task. The new Carlin and Soskice book represents a significant step forward in this regard. Consequently undergraduates, post-graduates and their teachers should be grateful that they can now access teaching materials which have something useful to say about the financial crisis. * Professor Stephen Nickell, CBE, FBA. And are their actions today constrained by institutions and norms established in the past? This volume looks at case studies from South Africa to China to seek a better understanding of the dynamics behind how elites decide to engage with economic development. Approaches include economic modelling, social surveys, theoretical analysis, and program evaluation. These different methods explore the relationship between elites and development outcomes from five angles: the participation and reaction of elites to institutional creation and change, how economic changes affect elite formation and circulation, elite perceptions of national welfare, theTable of ContentsPART I: THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS ; PART II: THE FORMATION AND CIRCULATION OF ELITES ; PART III: THE PREFERENCES OF ELITES ; PART IV: ELITES AND STATE CAPACTIY ; PART V: GRASSROOTS RESPONSES TO ELITES

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1989, The Undeserving Poor was a critically acclaimed and enormously influential account of America''s enduring debate about poverty. Taking stock of the last quarter century, Michael B. Katz''s new edition of this classic is virtually a new book. As the first did, it will force all concerned Americans to reconsider the foundations of our policies toward the poor, especially in the wake of the Great Recession that began in 2008.Katz highlights how throughout American history, the poor have been regarded as undeserving: people who do not deserve sympathy because they brought their poverty on themselves, either through laziness and immorality, or because they are culturally or mentally deficient. This long-dominant view sees poverty as a personal failure, serving to justify America''s mean-spirited treatment of the poor. Katz reminds us, however, that there are other explanations of poverty besides personal failure. Poverty has been written about as a problem of place, of resources, of political economy, of power, and of market failure. Katz looks at each idea in turn, showing how they suggest more effective approaches to our struggle against poverty. The Second Edition includes important new material. It now sheds light on the revival of the idea of culture in poverty research; the rehabilitation of Daniel Patrick Moynihan; the resurgent role of biology in discussions of the causes of poverty, such as in The Bell Curve; and the human rights movement''s intensified focus on alleviating world poverty. It emphasizes the successes of the War on Poverty and Great Society, especially at the grassroots level. It is also the first book to chart the rise and fall of the underclass as a concept driving public policy.A major revision of a landmark study, The Undeserving Poor helps readers to see poverty-and our efforts to combat it--in a new light.Trade ReviewA convincing and clear historical perspective on the peculiar perceptions of poverty and welfare in the United States . * William Julius Wilson, University of Chicago *Table of ContentsPreface ; Chapter One ; The Undeserving Poor: Morals, Culture and Biology ; Chapter Two ; Poverty and the Politics of Liberation ; Chapter Three ; Intellectual Foundations of the War on Poverty and Great Society ; Chapter Four ; Interpretations of Poverty in the Conservative Ascendance ; Chapter Five ; The Rise and Fall of the <"Underclass>" ; Epilogue ; What Kind of a Problem is Poverty? ; Acknowledgments ; Index

In the age of social media and cloud storage, we have become a copying and sharing culture. Much of our everyday communication, work, and entertainment now directly involves copyright law. Copyright law and policy are ferociously contested. Record labels, movie studios, book publishers, newspapers, and many authors rage that those who share music, video, text, and images over the Internet are âstealingâ their property. By contrast, copyright industry critics celebrate digital technologyâs potential to make the universe of movies, music, books, and art accessible anytime and anywhere â and to empower individuals the world over to express themselves by sharing and remixing those works. These critics argue that excessive copyright enforcement threatens that promise and stifles creativity. In Copyright: What Everyone Needs to Know, Neil Weinstock Netanel explains the concepts needed to understand the heated debates about copyright law and policy. Book SynopsisIn this engaging and readable book, Peter Decherney tells the story of Hollywood, from its nineteenth-century origins to the emergence of internet media empires. He recounts how the studio system rose out of the ashes of Thomas Edison''s trust to create the handful of companies that have dominated global screens and imaginations for more than 100 years. Throughout, he reveals that the elements we take to be a natural part of the Hollywood experience--stars, genre-driven storytelling, blockbuster franchises, etc.--are really the product of cultural, political, and commercial forces. In many ways, Hollywood has remained the same for over a century. It has always been a global industry based in the U.S., and its storytelling has always unfolded across media, adapting plays, book, and comics and spinning off product tie-ins, television series, and social media campaigns. But major events have also continually remade Hollywood. The studios have weathered wars, disruptive new technologies, and competition by adopting a strategy of risk management and assimilation. This book explores the challenges of new technologies, including sound, home video, and computer graphics. And it examines Hollywood''s responses to World War II, independent film movements, and regulations imposed by Washington.Hollywood: A Very Short Introduction is filled with discussions of well-known movies, stars, and directors, encapsulating the past century of research on Hollywood while adding many original insights and stories. He takes the reader from the days of Edison's kinetoscope to digital post-production equipment, always alert to the fact that this now century-old success story which is the American film industry only survived the many changes in technology, business models and audience tastes, because it held fast to a few fundamental principles, such as keeping corporate control, managing risk and extending audience access. Book SynopsisProduction is a complex system of interdependent activities, necessary to the system as a whole, which itself depends on the continuance of each individual activity that composes it. In such a system, resources must be committed to specific technological purposes long in advance to the ultimate sale of goods to the consumer. The success of such an enterprise system rests on the durability of the instruments it uses. These are so complex, sensitive, and powerful that their huge expense can be recovered only if they can be used for many years. Yet when the decision is made to invest in them, those years of use are in the future and the conditioning circumstances are unobservable and unknown. The firm in Western economies is the essential institutional means of confronting this problem of uncertainty, Expectation, Enterprise and Profit: The Theory of the Firm is concerned with the nature and mode of life of the firm as a means of policy formation in the face of uncertainty. This book offers a concise treatment and excellent analysis of the major concepts studied in a first course in the theory of the firm.Table of ContentsPreface; 1: The Nature of Production; 2: The Matrix of Production; 3: The Firm’s Tests of Rightness; 4: Investment; 5: Expectation; 6: Interdependent Decision-making; 7: Profit and Equilibrium
