Book SynopsisHe pulled off what some deem the crime of the century: skyjacking a commercial jetliner, collecting a ransom of $200,000, parachuting off the aft stairs of the Boeing 727 into the night, and simply disappearing. Since November 1971, D.B. Cooperno one knows his real name or identityhas become a figure of enduring fascination and obsession. The FBI pursued him for over forty years, before closing the case and leaving it unsolved.Unsolved, perhaps, but much admired. D.B. Cooper''s exploit over the skies of the American Northwest has inspired books, films, and endless speculation. What''s less known is that it inspired imitators. None were more daring than the hijacker of American Airlines Flight 119. After commandeering the flight from St. Louis with a machine gun and collecting $502,500 in ransom, he parachuted out over Indiana. Unlike Cooper, he was tracked down.In The Hijacking of American Flight 119, John Wigger explores the wave of hijackings that swept over commercial flight betweenTrade ReviewSkillfully researched and written with beguiling flair, The Hijacking of American Flight 119 is an essential guide to the madcap era in which criminals, dreamers, and desperate souls made routine flying a perilous affair. * Brendan I. Koerner, Author of The Skies Belong To Us and Now the Hell Will Start *Historian and master storyteller John Wigger offers a thrill ride into an astonishing cultural phenomenon, an era when misguided souls hijacked commercial airliners for ransom, then jumped out with the cash-and only the vaguest idea how to work a parachute. * Peter Houlahan, Author of Norco '80: The True Story of the Most Spectacular Bank Robbery in American History *As a Boeing 727 captain I've always been fascinated by the story of D.B. Cooper and those who tried to copy him. John Wigger digs deep into one, bringing into full view the stranger-than-fiction story of American Airlines flight 119, based on the testimony of those directly involved in the hijacking, lovingly and painstakingly recapturing the events that still influence the aviation industry today. I promise: this book will make you more tolerant of those intrusive TSA pat downs. * Captain Erika Armstrong, Author of A Chick in the Cockpit *Propulsive and insightful, this is a thorough portrait of a striking episode in American history. * Publishers Weekly *Inherently compelling. * The Wall Street Journal *Wigger's hugely entertaining book travels a previously unexplored byway of aviation history and is probably best read on dry land, just to be absolutely sure. * Marcus Berkmann, Daily Mail *Table of ContentsPrologue Part 1: The Heist Chapter 1: The Hijacking Chapter 2: Sharon Wetherley Chapter 3: David Spellman Chapter 4: The Friendly Skies Chapter 5: Heinrick von George Chapter 6: The Money Chapter 7: Mohawk Airlines Flight 452 Chapter 8: The Pilots Chapter 9: The Parachutes Chapter 10: D.B. • Grand Transitions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewGrand Transitions shows Vaclav Smil truly to be Bringing It All Back Home * John Roy Porter, Natures Sciences Sociétés *Vaclav Smil is my favorite author. * Bill Gates, GatesNotes *His book roams impressively around the globe and across five centuries as it asks big questions and searches for big answers. . . .His five-pack of grand transitions encompasses population, agriculture and diets, energy, economy, and environment. . . . anyone who hasn't read about these subjects since graduation will be awestruck by the amount of research that has gone into these vaguely familiar stories. Smil pulls recent studies together, throws in a few of his own, offers interpretive twists, and fills his account with delicious nuggets of information. (This book actually got me in trouble at home, as I kept asking my family, "Did you know..." about some gem of an anecdote.) * Andre Schmid, Literary Review of Canada *No one writes about the great issues of our time with more rigor or erudition than Vaclav Smil. Grand Transitions is at once sweeping, sobering, and profoundly informative. * Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction, winner of the Pulitzer Prize *An expert portrait of spectacular technical and economic advances that many in the 21st century enjoy but which exclude large segments of the population and are creating problems that may or may not be solvable. Ingenious, insightful, and disturbing. * Kirkus *Underpinned by mesmerizing data and deep analysis, Grand Transitions provides a clear and compelling framework for thinking about the future of energy, the environment, and the economy. A feast for anyone interested in the future of energy. A must read. * Atul Arya, Chief Energy Strategist, IHS Markit *Grand Transitions is the epitome of excellence in integrative systemic scientific analysis, anchored in a magisterial exploration of the main five transitions of mankind since civilizations emerged. And it provides a healthy antidote to the wishful thinking so prevalent today. Decision makers and the public should educate themselves with this authoritative evaluation, which will shape their decisions on how to ensure a harmonious, sustainable future for all. * Didier Sornette, Professor of Entrepreneurial Risks and Finance, ETH Zurich *For a generation, polymath Vaclav Smil has expounded on the big patterns in energy, food, and other means through which humans have transformed their environment. In Grand Transitions he has zoomed out even further to paint a picture of how the pieces fit together and to explain how the modern world works. In elegant prose with relentless attention to fact and reality-rare these days-he has written a masterpiece that forces you to think, disagree, wonder, and grapple with the accomplishments and challenges of today's industrial society. * David G. Victor, Professor of International Relations, University of California, San Diego *In Grand Transitions, Vaclav Smil reminds us of the fundamental point that the economy cannot be untethered from nature. Technological ingenuity has loosened the links, but the outlook for economic gains--or losses--is inextricably tied to the dynamics of population change, and of food and energy production. * Diane Coyle, Bennett Professor of Public Policy, University of Cambridge *Investing requires quantification of impact. But Vaclav Smil convincingly challenges the increased reliance on applying mathematical modelling to single-frame narratives. He steadily illustrates why such approaches seldom provide useful enough insights, as they tend to ignore technical constraints and biospheric limits. * Philippe Rohner, Pictet Asset Management *Smil offers a sweeping account of the deep material forces that have shaped the modern world... He tells a remarkable story of the human capacity to innovate, build, and integrate societies across vast distances. * Foreign Affairs *Smil is a conjurer with numbers. In Grand Transitions, he works to show just how thoroughly this is now a planet of our making--and how rapidly the transformation is still happening. * Washington Post *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisHousehold Finance: An Introduction to Individual Financial Behavior speaks to both how people should and how people actually do make financial decisions, and how these financial decisions contribute to and detract from their well-being. Households must plan over long but finite horizons, have important nontraded assets, notably human capital; hold illiquid assets, particularly housing; face constraints on the ability to borrow; and are subject to complex taxation. Some households manage these goals and challenges independently, while still others delegate portfolio management. Household financial problems have many special features that differ from firms, investors, or the functioning of markets.Author Richard Deaves covers the broad range of choices and goals in household finance both in the normative sense (i.e., what is best) based on conventional financial theory and in the positive sense (i.e., what is actually done) based on observing actual behavior. Book SynopsisAmericans today worry about concentrated power in private industry to an extent not seen in generations. Not only do they find diminished diversity of service-providers and producers, but they are disquieted by the power of a few large companies to shape and constrain democratic processes. Americans across the political spectrum, from former President Donald Trump to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, have sounded alarms about the overlarge power of business in both public and private life. While many of the technologies and industries that worry Americans are new, the concerns they''ve raised are not unprecedented.Antimonopoly and American Democracy traces the history of antimonopoly politics in the United States, arguing that organized action against concentrated economic power comprises an important American democratic tradition. While prevailing narratives tend to treat monopoly as a risk to people mainly in their roles as consumers--by causing prices to increase, for example-Trade ReviewAn essential guide to the history of the fight against monopoly in the United States, this remarkable book reveals that from the Boston Tea Party to today, the battle against monopoly has been a battle for freedom. * Luigi Zingales, Robert C. McCormack Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance, University of Chicago Booth School of Business *Antimonopoly and American Democracy is a scholarly, eminently readable, and wide-ranging treatment of Americans' understanding of the monopoly problem from the late-eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Its authors treat various markets and technologies, and from disciplines that are not limited to economics. In particular, this book addresses the heavy presence of antimonopoly rhetoric in the development of corporate law, antitrust, the law of regulated industries, and related concerns about federalism and international relations. An outstanding list of contributors explores these topics from every angle, emphasizing the extent to which monopoly was perceived as a threat to equality, economic participation and opportunity, and democracy itself. * Herbert Hovenkamp, James G. • Creating and Transforming the Twentieth Century

Oxford University Press Inc Creating and Transforming the Twentieth Century

Book SynopsisCreating and Transforming the Twentieth Century combines two of Vaclav Smil''s seminal works in a revised and expanded edition. Creating the Twentieth Century explores the period between 1867 and 1914, a time of unparalleled innovation that laid the groundwork for modern civilization. It investigates the birth of an expansive society driven by the synergy of fuels, science, and technical innovation. Key inventions from this era include dynamite, the telephone, photographic film, and the first light bulbs in the 1870s, followed by electricity-generating plants, electric motors, steam turbines, and cars in the 1880s. The period of extraordinary discovery continues into the early 20th century with the advent of airplanes, tractors, radio signals, and plastics. Smil systematically examines four fundamental classes of innovations: the formation and standardization of electric systems, the rapid adoption of internal combustion engines, the surge in chemical syntheses and material substitutions, and the dawn of the information age. This interdisciplinary account highlights the epochal consequences of these advancements, leading to high-energy societies engaged in mass production aimed at improving living standards.Transforming the Twentieth Century investigates how these technical advances shaped the decades that followed. It examines how the 20th century differed from the preceding 100 years due to unprecedented combinations of technical progress. Smil discusses the remarkable pace and ambition of 20th-century advancements, which elevated industrial production to new heights and tackled previously insurmountable challenges. He addresses the themes of electricity, engines, materials, and information techniques, and critically examines the contradictory consequences of technological progress--including liberating simplicity versus overwhelming complexity, unprecedented affluence versus economic disparities, and increased security versus new fears. This new edition contains numerous updates to the original books and features a new preface and a final chapter examining key themes in light of major 21st-century events and publications. Now in a single volume, these classic texts remain central to Smil''s acclaimed oeuvre, and their lessons are perennially fascinating.

Oxford University Press The Price of Money

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn accessible guide to the natural rate of interest, why it is likely going up, and what that means for the future of the global economy and markets. Ask most people who sets interest rates, and they'll say it's the central bank. At a fundamental level, though, decisions by the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and their peers around the world are constrained by the natural rate of interest. The natural rate - the interest rate that balances supply of saving and demand for investment, whilst keeping inflation low and employment high - has moved from academic obscurity to a central role in monetary policy, and the operation of the economy and financial markets. For almost half a century from the 1970s to the 2010s, the natural rate in the US and other advanced economies fell. In the last decade, it has started to rise. In the years ahead, the cost of borrowing has further to climb. That shift from falling to rising borrowing costs reflects seismic shifts in demographics, technology, and geopolitics. In the years ahead, risk factors from war to artificial intelligence and climate change could accelerate its rise. For everyone from Ministers of Finance balancing the books to Wall Street titans making the next big bet, the shift from falling to rising borrowing costs has profound consequences. In a world where money is more expensive, the cost of managing it poorly gets higher. In The Price of Money, the Bloomberg Economics team explain the evolution of the natural rate, the forces driving it, where it is headed, and what that means for everything from government debt to saving for retirement.

Book SynopsisThis book confronts the practical problems of modelling aggregate time series data, in a systematic and intergrated framework. The main problem in econometric modelling of time series is discovering sustainable and interpretable relationships between observed economic variables. The primary aim of this book is to develop an operational econometric approach which allows constructive modelling. Professor Hendry deals with methodological issues (model discovery, data mining, and progressive research strategies); with major tools for modelling (recursive methods, encompassing, super exogeneity, invariance tests); and with practical problems (collinearity, heteroscedasticity, and measurement errors). He also includes an extensive study of US money demand. The book is self-contained, with the technical background covered in appendices. It is thus suitable for first year graduate students, and includes solved examples and exercises to facilitate its use in teaching.Trade ReviewThis is a book of really breathtaking scope and vision ... Oxford University Press EU Cartel Law and Economics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe significant evolution of EU competition law in the last 15 years has been fundamentally influenced by economic theory, and economic aspects of cartel prosecution are increasingly relevant in modern competition practice. EU Cartel Law and Economics is the first book-length assessment of cartels from an integrated law and economics perspective. This perspective allows for a more insightful evaluation of the wide variety of practices at the intersection between collusive restrictions of competition and pro-competitive agreements between firms. It sheds light on the underlying mechanics of cartels, including how to detect anti-competitive conspiracies in the absence of hard evidence. It also provides a more conceptual approach to cartel law, outlining ways in which the current legal structure can be applied more effectively to deter anti-competitive conduct without discouraging pro-competitive forms of cooperation between firms. The book is divided into four parts: the first part proviTrade ReviewThe present book is indeed the first comprehensive study that has been conducted on EU cartel law and economics. It can serve as guidance for scholars, practitioners and competition authorities from both economic and legal backgrounds. The authors succeeded at exploring all the economic and legal aspects of cartel enforcement while emphasizing in their analysis on the main and the most important issues that truly needed reform. Most importantly, they confirmed the fact that economic theory is crucial for the design and enforcement of an effective competition law, including cartel enforcement, which was demonstrated notably by the recommendations and proposals that they have put forward. * Fatma El-Zahraa Adel, Egyptian Competition Authority (Cairo), Concurrences *This book covers a significant amount of ground, doing this very concisely. It engages with EU law and principles of microeconomics and game theory which can illuminate the competition rules. Both of these are complex disciplines. However, in its engagement, the book neither oversimplifies these matters nor does it engage in overly complicated, highly technical discussions (as many economics-oriented works are wont to do). It is eminently readable and should appeal to both lawyers and economists: to the former for its elegant discussion of the economic insights, and to the latter for its clear discussion of the law. * Dr Bruce Wardhaugh, European Competition Law Review *This is the first comprehensive study of the overall impact of economics on cartel enforcement. The book aims to examine the extent to which EU cartel law is consistent with the economics of collusion and identify areas where greater reliance on economics might be desirable ... The authors also explain the answers to a number of key questions. Why do firms form cartels? Are cartels necessarily a bad thing? What is the social cost of cartels? This book, which is written in a clear, non-technical style, makes the theory, law and practice of cartel enforcement accessible to readers from both economic and legal backgrounds. * Kevin McVeigh, Elliott Duffy Garrett , The Law Gazette *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1: A Primer on Cartels 2: The Regulatory and Institutional Framework of EU Cartel Law 3: Cartel Detection 4: Cartel Prosecution 5: Civil Damages

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the global financial crisis of 2008/09, international cooperation has failed to curb volatile financial markets. Changes in the global rules of finance discussed in the G20 during the last decade remain limited, and it is uncertain whether they are suitable to help mitigate and manage future crises to come. This book offers an alternative to the popular notion that this failure is the result of the ''nature'' of the international system, the clash of national egoisms, or lack of leadership. It instead investigates problems of international cooperation by looking at their deeper structural origins in the competition of different models of capitalism.US finance-led, EU integration-led, and East Asian state-led capitalism complement each other globally but have conflicting preferences on how to regulate international finance. This interdependence of capitalist models is relatively stable but also prone to crises caused by volatile financial flows, global economic imbalances, and ''currency wars''. By bringing together approaches from International Political Economy and Comparative Capitalism, this book shows that regulating international finance is not a technocratic exercise of fine-tuning the machinery of international institutions, but rather a political process. International cooperation can only be successful if it goes hand in hand with deep domestic changes in each of these capitalist models.Table of Contents1: Introduction 2: The Problem in Detail: The Clash of Capitalisms and the Rules of International Finance 3: Finance-Led Capitalism in the US, the Globalization of Finance and the Quest for Global Neoliberal Hegemony 4: Integration-Led Capitalism in the EU, the Rise of Euro Corporatism and the Quest for Regional Stability 5: State-Led Capitalism in East Asia, Export Orientation and the Quest for National Sovereignty 6: Conclusions: Second Image IPE and the International Regulation of Finance

Book SynopsisNo one wants to live in poverty. Few people would want others to do so. Yet, millions of people worldwide live in poverty. According to the World Bank, over 700 million people lived on less than US $2 a day in 2013. Why is that? What has been done about it in the past? And what is being done about it now?In this Very Short Introduction Philip N. Jefferson explores how the answers to these questions lie in the social, political, economic, educational, and technological processes that impact all of us throughout our lives. The degree of vulnerability is all that differentiates us. He shows how a person''s level of vulnerability to adverse changes in their life is very much dependent on the circumstances of their birth, including where their family lived, the schools they attended, whether it was peacetime or wartime, whether they had access to clean water, and whether they are male or female. Arguing that whilst poverty is ancient and enduring, the conversation about it is always new and evolving, Jefferson looks at the history of poverty, and the practical and analytical efforts we have made to eradicate it, and the prospects for further poverty alleviation in the future.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Focusing on China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand, it provides an interdisciplinary account of variations, continuities, and changes in the institutional structures that govern financial systems, industrial relations, and product markets, and that shape the evolution of national political economies. Book SynopsisAgriculture, one of the oldest human occupations, is practised all over the world, using techniques ranging from the profoundly traditional to the most scientifically advanced. Without it we would starve. Yet how many of us understand what is happening in the fields that we see as we drive through the countryside? How often do we think about the origins of the food in our trolley? In this Very Short Introduction Paul Brassley and Richard Soffe explain what farmers do and why they do it. Beginning with the most basic resource, the soil, they show why it is important, and how farmers can increase its productivity, before turning to the plants and animals that grow on it, and tracing the connections between their biology and the various ways in which farmers work with them. The authors conclude by looking at some of the controversial issues facing contemporary agriculture: its sustainability; its impact on wildlife and landscape; issues of animal welfare; and the affect of climate change and the development of genetically modified organisms on farmers.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. • Projects

    Oxford University Press Projects

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is a project? How are projects organized to deal with a complex, rapidly changing, and uncertain world? Why are projects the organization of the future? A project is a temporary organization and one-time process established to achieve a desired outcome. Projects range in size from small teams to large international joint-ventures and temporary coalitions of public and private organizations. What distinguishes projects from all other organizational activities - such as mass produced products and services - is that a project is finite in duration, lasting from hours, days, or weeks to years, and in some cases decades. Each project is disposable. It brings together people and resources to accomplish a goal and when the goal is accomplished, the organization disappears. When projects are complex, unpredictable, and changing, their plans have to be flexible and able to adjust to situations that cannot foreseen at the outset. In this Very Short Introduction Andrew Davies looks at how projects have developed since the industrial revolution to create the human-built world in which we live, work, and play. Considering some of our greatest endeavours such as the Erie Canal, Apollo Moon landing, Japanese product development, and Chinese ecocity projects, Davies identifies how projects are organized and managed to design and produce large and complex systems, cope with fast changing conditions, and deal with the immense uncertainties required to create breakthrough innovations in products and services. He concludes by considering how projects could be organized to address the challenges facing the post-industrial society of the 21st century. • AID ON EDGE OF CHAOS P Rethinking International

Oxford University Press AID ON EDGE OF CHAOS P Rethinking International

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisMany agree that the foreign aid system - which today involves virtually every nation on earth - needs drastic change. But there is much conflict as to what should be done. In Aid on the Edge of Chaos, Ben Ramalingam argues that what is most needed is the creative and innovative transformation of how aid works. Foreign aid today is dominated by linear, mechanistic ideas that emerged from early twentieth century industry, and are ill-suited to the world we face today. The problems and systems aid agencies deal with on a daily basis have more in common with ecosystems than machines: they are interconnected, diverse, and dynamic; they cannot be just simply re-engineered or fixed. Outside of aid, social scientists, economists, business leaders, and policy makers have started applying innovative and scientific approaches to such problems, informed by ideas from the ''new science'' of complex adaptive systems. Inspired by these efforts, aid practitioners and researchers have started experimenting with such approaches in their own work. This book showcases the experiences, insights, and often remarkable results of innovative thinkers and practitioners who are working to bring these approaches into the mainstream of aid. From transforming child malnutrition to rethinking economic growth, from building peace to reversing desertification, from rural Vietnam to urban Kenya, the ideas of complex systems thinking are starting to be used to make foreign aid more relevant, more appropriate, and more catalytic. Aid on the Edge of Chaos argues that such ideas and approaches should play a vital part of the transformation of aid. Aid should move from being an imperfect post-World War II global resource transfer system, to a new form of global cooperation that is truly fit for the twenty-first century.Trade ReviewThe examples presented in this work should prompt a reconsideration of how one thinks of foreign aid. * S. Paul, Choice *An exhaustive tour of the complex systems research landscape, including how it is used to understand phenomena as diverse as climate change, food price rises, ethnic segregation and the Arab spring ... Important and relevant for the aid world. * Amy Kazmin, Financial Times *The most interesting part of Mr Ramalingam's book is his discussion of how some agencies are beginning to learn from the way poor people can successfully do difficult things... [and that] experimenting repeatedly and quickly has much to offer the world of aid. * The Economist *Sets a new milestone in the aid debate... an impressive interdisciplinary tour * The Guardian Global Development Professionals Network *This book explains an important global activity few outsiders understand, and important scientific ideas that might yet turn it around. * Debora MacKenzie, New Scientist *Masterful. One of the most important books you will read about development. * Owen Barder, Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development *The accolades on the cover are well-founded; this is a great read, engagingly written, and full of vivid examples, poignantly-funny cartoons and a reflective humility that suits its subject matter. * Melissa Leach, Knowledge, Technology and Society *Many see international development aid as in thrall to linear, mechanized thinking, and champion approaches in which local people solve their own challenges with intelligently tailored backing. Ben Ramalingam offers a scientific model for that path... and fosters a new aid paradigm: an open innovation network, catalysing and leveraging change in countries around the world. * Nature *Breathtaking . . . catapults development thinking into the 21st century . . . read this book and be changed. * Andrew Zolli, Executive Director, Pop Tech and author of Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back *Ben Ramalingam's thought provoking and highly readable book re-frames the debate on aid and development challenges the existing aid paradigm and points the way towards a genuinely new approach - a new approach that is urgently needed. * Eric Beinhocker, Executive Director, Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford and author of The Origin of Wealth *Ben Ramalingam's tour de force of a book provides an unorthodox and fascinating insight into today's global aid sector: its current practices and sometimes faulty theories of action. This book is a vital source of inspiration. * Yves Daccord, Director General, ICRC *Marrying science, policy and practice with a deep moral conscience, this important book points to a future that that we should all be working towards. * Peter Doherty, Nobel Laureate, Medicine *Challenging... Much needed. Ramalingam pushes his reader to question traditional wisdoms, navigate different disciplines, and value the import of local experience. * Noreena Hertz, author of 'Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World' *Ramalingam sets out a challenge to everyone working in international cooperation, to rethink our basic assumptions and to think and act in ways that are more attuned to the real world in all its complexities. This is one to read and re-read. * Sir Richard Jolly, Assistant Secretary General, United Nations *Ben Ramalingam convincingly shows why transformational change is so badly needed in foreign aid, and where it might come from. * Lynda Gratton, Professor of Management, London Business School, Author of Hot Spots *This well-written and thought-provoking book is an important contribution to redesigning aid for a messy, complex world. * Duncan Green, Senior Strategic Advisor, Oxfam *Ben Ramalingam is a leading champion of the adaptive, scientific, trial-and-error thinking that the aid industry badly needs. * Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist Strikes Back and Adapt *This excellent book [is] a must-read for anyone interested in development, its current discontents, and its future potential. * Ricardo Haussmann, former Chief Economist, Inter-American Development Bank and Director of the Centre for International Development, Harvard University *This is a superb book, boldly facing in this age of globalization the complexity of aid to developing countries. Impressive and inspiring, this work is destined to become a 21st century classic. * Dudley Herschbach, Nobel Laureate, Chemistry *With beautifully clear writing and stories, Ben Ramalingam uses complexity concepts to reveal the deep reasons for why aid sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. * Thomas Homer-Dixon, Director, Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation, Author of The Upside of Down *Far from being a pessimistic funeral march, Ramalingam's wide-ranging discourse provides many inspiring examples of how complexity theory can be put to practical and meaningful use, and lays out a hopeful path forward. * Simon Levin, Moffat Professor of Ecology, Princeton University *Well-intentioned aid agencies sometimes oversimplify the problems they need to solve. [this] book makes the good case that the growing field of complex adaptive systems can help prevent such errors from being repeated. * Eric Maskin, Nobel Laureate, Economics *This brilliant book will energise the struggle to make big government, big money and big aid sensitive to contexts, humble about what they can achieve, and sophisticated about the connectedness of things. * Geoff Mulgan, Chief Executive, National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts, and former Director of UK Prime Minister's Strategy Unit *Ben Ramalingam seamlessly combines practical experience, policy relevance and scientific expertise. Aid on the Edge of Chaos deserves a very wide audience. * Paul Ormerod, author of Death of Economics and Positive Linking *A terrific, stimulating book. Ramalingam clearly and engagingly shows how the use of complex adaptive systems thinking can significantly strengthen and enhance the impacts and effectiveness of global foreign aid. * Jerry Sabloff, President, Santa Fe Institute *A magnificent piece of work a major contribution to the debate about how to rethink and improve the way we deliver aid worldwide. * Sir Nick Young, Chief Executive Officer, British Red Cross *Table of ContentsPART 1: THE WAY AID WORKS; PART 2: THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS; PART 3: THE WAY AID COULD WORK

  • Wealth in the Uk Distribution Accumulation and Policy

Oxford University Press, USA Wealth in the Uk Distribution Accumulation and Policy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines key issues connected with the distribution of personal wealth in the UK. It studies why wealth is now such an important factor in social differences and public policy. It presents the most recent information on current wealth inequalities and a detailed discussion of trends in the distribution of wealth. It uses newly available data to compare wealth inequalities in the UK with the USA, Canada, and Sweden. It uses longitudinal data, which track the same people over time, to examine trajectories in wealth accumulation over the decade to 2005 and inequalities in inheritances over the same period. It looks at how parental wealth levels and people''s asset-holdings early in adulthood affect outcomes later in their lives. The final part looks at the way in which policies towards wealth-holding developed historically, and the contradictory ways in which a wide range of public policies relate to people''s wealth levels, including through taxation, means-testing, and the encouragement of saving, and discusses what the key issues for policy towards wealth and wealth inequalities now are. Personal wealth in the UK totalled 5.5 trillion by 2010 (9-10 trillion if occupational pension rights are included). Inheritance flows are now equivalent to 4 per cent of national income each year. All households in the wealthiest tenth have more than 75 times the wealth of any of those in the bottom tenth. Absolute differences in wealth levels have increased substantially over the last 15 years, so wealth differences represent many more years of income than in the past. This makes them of great importance to life chances. This makes the book highly relevant for public policy, but also for academic and student understanding of a crucial dimension of social difference. As well as bringing together existing information on the area, the book contains considerable new analysis on wealth inequality, inheritance, and their impacts, drawing on work which is at the forefront of recent research.Trade ReviewThe authors have put together a number of complementary chapters that are of interest and will be useful for researchers and students in a wide range of fields...an excellent contribution to the debate on wealth inequality. * Alan Southern, People, Place and Policy *Table of ContentsPART I: WEALTH AND DISTRIBUTION; PART II: PERSONAL WEALTH ACCUMULATION AND ITS IMPACTS; PART III: WEALTH AND POLICY

The contributions cover a wide range of issues in macroeconomics and macroeconomic policy. They combine high level mathematics with economic analysis, and highlight the need to update our mathematical toolbox in order to understand the increased complexity of the macroeconomic environment. The volume represents hard evidence of high research intensity in many fields of macroeconomics, and warns against interpreting the scope of macroeconomics too narrowly. The mainstream business cycle analysis, based on dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) modelling of a particular type, has been criticised for its inability to predict or resolve the recent financial crisis. However, macroeconomic research on financial, information, and learning imperfections had not yet made their way into many of the pre-crisis DSGE models bTable of ContentsPART 1: FINANCIAL CRISIS AND RECOVERY ; PART 2: LEARNING, INCENTIVES, AND PUBLIC POLICY

Book SynopsisThis book revisits John Kenneth Galbraith''s classic text The Affluent Society in the context of the background to, and causes of, the global economic crisis that erupted in 2008. Each chapter takes a major theme of Galbraith''s book, distils his arguments, and then discusses to what extent they cast light on current developments, both in developed economies and in the economics discipline. The themes include: inequality, insecurity, inflation, debt, consumer behaviour, financialization, the economic role of government (''social balance''), the power of ideas, the role of power in the economy, and the nature of the good society. It considers the current problems of capitalism and the huge challenges facing democratic governments in tackling them. Book SynopsisBranding is possibly the most powerful commercial and cultural force on the planet. Iconic names such as Coca-Cola, Nike, Manchester United, Harry Potter, and Google are known and recognized by millions of people worldwide. As the market economy spreads across the world, brands are becoming ever more prevalent. The Apple brand has been valued at $98 billion - more than the GDP of Slovakia. Every day, we''re exposed to more than 3500 brand messages. And even though people are increasingly brand-aware and brand-sceptical, they are nevertheless seduced by brands. We may reject the whole brand system, but we still wouldn''t be parted from our Apple Macs. Brands are impossible to escape. In this Very Short Introduction Robert Jones discusses the rising omnipresence of brands, and analyses how they work their magic. He considers the incredible potency of brands as a commercial, social, and cultural force, and looks at the many different kinds of brands that exist - from products, services, and artistic properties, to companies, charities, sports clubs, and political parties. Defining what we mean by the word ''brand'', he explores both the positive and negative aspects of brands. Finally Jones considers the business of branding, and asks whether the idea of brands and branding is starting to decline, or whether it has a long future ahead.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area.
