Oxford University Press Happiness Growth and the Life Cycle Iza Prize in Labor Economics
Book SynopsisPublished with the IZA, this volume presents Richard Easterlin''s outstanding research on the analysis of subjective well-being, and on the relationship between demographic developments and economic outcomes. In both fields, his work has laid the foundations for enlarging the scope of traditional economic analysis and has increased our understanding of behaviour in several important domains, such as fertility choices, labour market behaviour, and the determinants of individual well-being. In various seminal contributions, Easterlin has demonstrated the importance of material aspirations and relative economic status for human behaviour. This book is a collection of 11 of his key papers, revised and edited to make a cohesive book. Oxford University Press Job Matching Wage Dispersion and Unemployment IZA Prize in Labor Economics
Book SynopsisDale T. Mortensen and Christopher A. Pissarides are the recipients (with Peter Diamond) of the Nobel memorial Prize in Economics 2010. They have made path-breaking contributions to the analysis of markets with search and matching frictions, which account for much of the success of job search theory and the flows approach in becoming a leading tool for microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis of labor markets. Both scientists have gained groundbreaking insights through individual as well as joint research. Consequently, this volume not only features several papers which helped shape the equilibrium search model, including some early contributions which have initiated the research on what is known today as the search and matching model of the labor market, but it also presents a joint paper by the IZA Prize Laureates, which is a complete statement of the equilibrium search and matching model with endogenous job creation and job destruction. Oxford University Press The Limits of the Market The Pendulum Between
Book SynopsisThe old discussion of ''Market or State'' is obsolete. There will always have to be a mix of market and state. The only relevant question is what that mix should look like. How far do we have to let the market go its own way in order to create as much welfare as possible for everyone? What is the responsibility of the government in creating welfare? These are difficult questions. But they are also interesting questions and Paul De Grauwe analyses them in this book. The desired mix of market and state is anything but easy to bring about. It is a difficult and sometimes destructive process that is constantly in motion. There are periods in history in which the market gains in importance. During other periods the opposite occurs and government is more dominant. The turning points in this pendulum swing typically seem to coincide with disruptive events that test the limits of market and state. Why we experience this dynamic is an important theme in the book. Will the market, which today is afforded a greater and greater role due to globalization, run up against its limits? Or do the financial crisis and growing income inequality show that we have already reached those limits? Do we have to brace ourselves for a rejection of the capitalist system? Are we returning to an economy in which the government is running the show?Trade ReviewThe book is a concise and straightforward look into the application of modern capitalism, its esoteric contradictions that threaten to tear it apart, and its relationship with government... Aside from the effective analysis, a major advantage of the bookis the explanatory narrative that the author utilizes, with minimal references, making it accessible to both academic and non-academic audiences * Alexandros Kyriakidis, JMCS *An excellent book on the ideological debate between market and state... The book is just a joy to read. Both economists and general readers will find it very useful. * Syed Basher (East West University, Bangladesh), Economic Record *One of Europe's leading economists, Paul de Grauwe is such a guide. In his lucid new book, the Belgian professor now based at the LSE explains how one should think about the balance between markets and governments as systems interacting with one another over time: an excellent little guide to how one should think about where we are and might be going. * Martin Wolf, Financial Times *In this lucid little book, De Grauwe, a Belgian economist now at the London School of Economics, explains why neither a pure market economy nor a purely government-controlled one is desirable. Getting the balance between market and government is extremely difficult. In practice, we lurch too far in one direction and then the other. * Financial Times, Best Books of 2017 *Table of ContentsPreface 1: The Great Economic Pendulum 2: The Limits of Capitalism 3: External Limits of Capitalism 4: Internal Limits of Capitalism 5: The Utopia of Self-Regulation in the Market System 6: Who Can Save The Market System from Destruction? 7: External Limits of Governments 8: Internal Limits of Governments 9: Who is in Charge? Oxford University Press Towards Human Development New Approaches to Macroeconomics and Inequality
Book SynopsisHuman Development is widely recognised as the overriding goal of development, yet its realization is challenged by growing inequality, macro-economic fluctuations, and recurrent financial crises. This edited collection reflects on the work of Richard Jolly and includes contributions from leading scholars of development, all of whom have worked with Richard Jolly at varying points in his distinguished career. The volume advances thinking in the area of Human Development by discussing the evolution of its conceptualization and the policy implications, and the achievements in related key areas such as education, social protection, and employment. It juxtaposes these theoretical and (at times) real life improvements with disturbing developments in terms of growing inequality and macro-economic instability. It documents the growing income inequality which has characterized both developing and developed countries. It shows that there has been a decline in some countries and identifies the poTable of ContentsPART I: SIR RICHARD JOLLY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT; PART II: HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND INEQUALITY: PROGRESS IN CONCEPTS AND POLICIES?; PART III: STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT, NEW MACROECONOMIC APPROACHES AND REMAINING CHALLENGES

Book SynopsisToday Adam Smith, author of the Wealth of Nations, is associated with the promotion of self-interest and a defence of greed. Oxford University Press Principles of Financial Regulation
Book SynopsisThe financial crisis of 2007-9 revealed serious failings in the regulation of financial institutions and markets, and prompted a fundamental reconsideration of the design of financial regulation. As the financial system has become ever-more complex and interconnected, the pace of evolution continues to accelerate. It is now clear that regulation must focus on the financial system as a whole, but this poses significant challenges for regulators. Principles of Financial Regulation describes how to address those challenges. Examining the subject from a holistic and multidisciplinary perspective, Principles of Financial Regulation considers the underlying policies and the objectives of regulation by drawing on economics, finance, and law methodologies. The volume examines regulation in a purposive and dynamic way by framing the book in terms of what the financial system does, rather than what financial regulation is. By analysing specific regulatory measures, the book provides readers to the opportunity to assess regulatory choices on specific policy issues and encourages critical reflection on the design of regulation.Trade ReviewThe book is a well-written composition that covers the major issues of financial regulation and provides a comprehensive picture of this complicated field in a clear and understandable manner. ... The book is a "must" for students in courses on financial regulation. However, it may be of use for a wider range of readers including academics (in law, business, public policy and economics), practitioners in the field and regulators. Oxford University Press Mathematical Finance
Book SynopsisIn recent years the finance industry has mushroomed to become an important part of modern economies, and many science and engineering graduates have joined the industry as quantitative analysts, with mathematical and computational skills that are needed to solve complex problems of asset valuation and risk management. An important parallel story exists of scientific endeavour. Between 1965-1995, insightful ideas in economics about asset valuation were turned into a mathematical ''theory of arbitrage'', an enterprise whose first achievement was the famous 1973 Black-Scholes formula, followed by extensive investigations using all the resources of modern analysis and probability. The growth of the finance industry proceeded hand-in-hand with these developments. Now new challenges arise to deal with the fallout from the 2008 financial crisis and to take advantage of new technology, which has revolutionized the practice of trading. This Very Short Introduction introduces readers with no previous background in this area to arbitrage theory and why it works the way it does. Illuminating pricing theory, Mark Davis explains its applications to interest rates, credit trading, fund management and risk management. He concludes with a survey of the most pressing issues in mathematical finance today.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Oxford University Press The Uses of Social Investment
Book SynopsisThe Uses of Social Investment provides the first study of the welfare state, under the new post-crisis austerity context and associated crisis management politics, to take stock of the limits and potential of social investment. It surveys the emergence, diffusion, limits, merits, and politics of social investment as the welfare policy paradigm for the 21st century, seen through the lens of the life-course contingencies of the competitive knowledge economy and modern family-hood.Featuring contributions from leading scholars in the field, the volume revisits the intellectual roots and normative foundations of social investment, surveys the criticisms that have leveled against the social investment perspective in theory and policy practice, and presents empirical evidence of social investment progress together with novel research methodologies for assessing socioeconomic ''rates of return'' on social investment. Given the progressive, admittedly uneven, diffusion of the social investment Trade Review[The book] is an open, honest debate about the difficulties of reforming the welfare state to deal with new risks posed by demographic and economic changes of the 21st century, and find a path between the two worse alternatives of knee-jerk austerity and the rising spectre of welfare chauvinism * Vera Scépanovi, Transfer *With its beautifully symbolic cover of interrelating and multiply-coloured leaves moving dynamically over time, The Uses of Social Investment is a major publication bringing together many of the most interesting intellectuals and intellectual perspectives in the OECD academy. The book, and, as it compellingly drives home, the paradigm, is unusually and persuasively interdisciplinary, going from social policy to political science and political economy, and through law, sociology and economics. It is highly readable I found myself dipping in and out with pleasure and then getting deeply absorbed; it moves between optimistic and sceptical, practical and blue skies, and always thought-provoking. * David Soskice, London School of Economics and Political Science *This book provides a unique panoramic state-of-the-art view of the theoretical debates and empirical analyses of social investment policies. Oxford University Press Agriculture Diversification and Gender in Rural Africa
Book SynopsisThis is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Agriculture, Diversification, and Gender in Rural Africa uses a longitudinal cross-country comparative approach to contribute to the understanding of smallholder agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Relying on unique household level data collected in six African countries since 2002, it addresses the dynamics of intensification and diversification within and outside agriculture in contexts where women have much poorer access to agrarian resources than men.Despite a growing interest in smallholder agriculture in Africa, this interest has not been matched by the research on the subject. While recent policies focus on reducing poverty through encouraging smallholder agriculture, there are few studies showing how livelihoods have changed since this time, and especially how such changes may have affected male and female headed households differently. Moreover, agriculture is often viewed in isolation from other types of income generating opportunities, like small scale trading. Agriculture, Diversification, and Gender in Rural Africa looks at how livelihoods have changed over time and how this has affected the relationship between agricultural and non-agricultural sources of livelihoods. In general, women have much poorer access to agricultural sources of income, and for this reason the interplay between farm and non-farm sources of income is especially important to analyse.Providing suggestions for more inclusive policies related to rural development, this edited volume outlines current weaknesses and illustrates potential opportunities for change. It offers a nuanced alternative to the current dominance of structural transformation narratives of agricultural change through adding insights from gender studies as well as village-level studies of agrarian development. It positions change in relation to broader livelihood dynamics outside the farm sector and contextualises them nationally and regionally to provide a necessary analytical adaption to the unfolding empirical realities of rural Africa.Table of Contents1: Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt, Fred Mawunyo Dzanku, and Aida Isinika: Introduction- theoretical and methodological framing of the book 2: Magnus Jirström, Maria Archila Bustos, and Sarah Alobo Loison: African smallholder farmers on the move: farm and non-farm trends for six sub-Saharan African countries, 2002-2015 3: Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt: Assets, gender, and rural livelihoods 4: Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt: Gender and rural livelihoods: agricultural commercialization and farm non-farm diversification 5: Göran Djurfeldt, Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt, Ola Hall, and Maria Archila Bustos: Agrarian change and structural transformation: drivers and distributional outcomes 6: Elibariki Msuya, Aida Isinika, and Fred Mawunyo Dzanku: Agricultural intensification response to agricultural input subsidies in Tanzania: a spatial-temporal and gender perspective 2002-2015 7: Peter Mvula and Wapulumuka Mulwafu: Intensification, crop diversification and gender relations in Malawi 8: Ellen Hillbom and Martin Prowse: Policies or prices? Oxford University Press Kidnap
Book SynopsisKidnap for ransom is a lucrative but tricky business. Millions of people live, travel, and work in areas with significant kidnap risks, yet kidnaps of foreign workers, local VIPs, and tourists are surprisingly rare and the vast majority of abductions are peacefully resolved - often for remarkably low ransoms. In fact, the market for hostages is so well ordered that the crime is insurable. This is a puzzle: ransoming a hostage is the world''s most precarious trade. What would be the right price for your loved one - and can you avoid putting others at risk by paying it? What prevents criminals from maltreating hostages? How do you (safely) pay a ransom? And why would kidnappers release a potential future witness after receiving their money? Kidnap: Inside the Ransom Business uncovers how a group of insurers at Lloyd''s of London have solved these thorny problems for their customers. Based on interviews with industry insiders (from both sides), as well as hostage stakeholders, it uncovers an intricate and powerful private governance system ordering transactions between the legal and the criminal economies.Trade ReviewThe important issues raised by this book make it an indispensable guide for those interested in understanding the dark world of kidnapping for ransom. * Joshua Sinai, Washington Times *This is the latest, and in many ways one of the very best, of a recent wave of "New Institutional Economics of Marginal Markets" books... After years of research and hundreds of interviews, Anja Shortland has delivered a truly excellent book, one worth studying for the insights it contains into the new political economy and the new institutionalism. * Michael C Munger, Independent Review *... a fascinating insight into a world most people thankfully don't have to experience... This is a fascinating and provocative book, as compelling as any fictional thriller. * Matthew Partridge, Money Week Book of the Week *Kidnap will open your eyes, and it could help you keep both feet square on the ground. * Terri Schlichenmeyer, Journal Record Online *This outstanding book enlightens readers on the modern workings of the ransom business with its stakeholders-the kidnappers, the insurers, the governments, and the victims and their families. The author applies economic reasoning in a clear, clever, and insightful manner. In doing so she puts a perplexing problem into sharp focus. This must-read book addresses a crucial political problem in an engaging way. * Todd Sandler, University of Texas at Dallas. Author of Terrorism: What Everyone Needs to Know *Using jargon-free prose and impeccable analytical clarity this book portrays the business logic of the protagonists of kidnap-the kidnappers, their protectors, the hostages, and the insurers-vividly illustrating it with many real-life cases replete with unexpected twists. Whether you are afraid of being kidnapped, eager to sell insurance, working hard to deter or catch kidnappers, or even just a social scientist eager to understand what makes kidnapping fail or thrive, this treatise, the first of its kind, will prove supremely enlightening. * Diego Gambetta European University Institute and Oxford University, author of Engineers of Jihad, Codes of the Underworld, and The Sicilian Mafia *What do you get when you combine the intrigue of the international kidnap-for-ransom business and solid nuanced economic theory? A great read and deep insights into how extra-legal markets really work. * Gillian Hadfield, University of Toronto *The business and economic dynamics of kidnap-for-ransom are highly complex, but in this new book-unique in this field- Shortland provides a masterful deconstruction and explanation of the trickiest trade. Shortland lifts the veil on a highly complex world, revealing the ecosystem of motivations and competing interests that allow an orderly market to operate in the most disorderly of environments. * Tom Keatinge, Director, Centre for Financial Crime & Security Studies, RUSI *Negotiation with criminals; a fortune at stake; emotions on the redline; lives hanging in the balance. What couldn't go wrong with kidnap-for-ransom? In this gripping new book, Anja Shortland analyses the ransom business from the inside. Her discovery is startling and brilliant: a self-governing marketplace of cooperation and order. Outstanding and original, Kidnap is mandatory reading for students of (anti-)social order. * Peter T. Leeson, George Mason University, author of The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates and WTF?! An Economic Tour of the Weird *Rigorous analysis which is needed not just in this field but also in cyber, art crime and all those areas where the lack of international policing leaves the private sector to find its own solutions Meticulous research, clear conclusions of great importance to policy makers and those engaged in the prevention and mitigation of ransom attacks. * Julian Radcliffe OBE, Founding Director of Control Risks and Chairman of the Art Loss Register *Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press The Invisible Hand How Market Economies have
Book SynopsisThe Invisible Hand? offers a radical departure from the conventional wisdom of economists and economic historians, by showing that ''factor markets'' and the economies dominated by them -- the market economies -- are not modern, but have existed at various times in the past. They rise, stagnate, and decline; and consist of very different combinations of institutions embedded in very different societies. These market economies create flexibility and high mobility in the exchange of land, labour, and capital, and initially they generate economic growth, although they also build on existing social structures, as well as existing exchange and allocation systems. The dynamism that results from the rise of factor markets leads to the rise of new market elites who accumulate land and capital, and use wage labour extensively to make their wealth profitable. In the long term, this creates social polarization and a decline of average welfare. As these new elites gradually translate their economiTrade ReviewBas Van Bavel has given both public policy and comparative institutional history a great boost by asking big questions about where we are in the history of economic development, looking at contemporary quandaries through the lens of long-term historical patterns. * Hilton L. Root, Independent Review *Starting from a sharp focus on fundamental problems -- the long-term effects of society on market economies, the management of catastrophes -- Bas van Bavel tests existing theories and clearly formulates his innovative insights. * Wim Blockmans, Emeritus professor of medieval history, Leiden University *Bavel is excellent in providing numerical estimates... It is not only the plausibility of the mechanism of decline that gives strength to Bavel's thesis; it is also that he lists the manifestation of the decline * Branko Milanovic, globalinequality *A brief review...cannot do justice to wealth of material in this important new book, other than by noting that anyone interested in these issues should not miss it. * Gene Callahan, Cardiff University, History: Reviews of New Books *This a beautifully written book, easy to read, which makes it adequate for a wide audience. Above all, it is an original and intellectually challenging piece of scholarly work that breaks new historical grounds. Van Bavel is one of the few scholars alive who is equally an expert on history, economics, politics. This characteristic enables him a truly subtle analysis of texts and ideas. I want to make clear at the outset that economists and economic historians neglect this book at their peril, since it represents a methodological challenge to research as usual ... this book is going to be a vital contribution to the advancement of economic discourse as well as a crucial intervention in current political debate. * Stefano Zamagni, Journal of Economics *Van Bavel's deep expertise in the subject matter weaves an intricate web of connections of cultural, economic, and social aspects across time and space, and seamlessly draws the reader into a wonderful account * Mauricio Drelichman, Journal of Economic Literature *any social scientist interested in "big think" questions will benefit greatly from reading The Invisible Hand? While it presents only a piece of the "great divergence" puzzle, it is an understudied piece that is an important complement to existing theories based on institutions, culture, and governance. * Jared Rubin, EH.net *Table of Contents1: Introduction: Markets in economics and history 2: Markets in an early medieval empire: Iraq, 500-1100 3: Markets in medieval city-states: the centre-north of Italy, 1000-1500 4: Markets in late medieval / early modern principalities: the Low Countries, 1100-1800 5: Epilogue: Markets in modern states: England, the United States and Western Europe, 1500-2000 6: Conclusion: The fundamental incompatibility of market economies with long-run prosperity Bibliography

Oxford University Press Introduction to the Theory of Complex Systems
Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive introduction to quantitative approaches to complex adaptive systems. Practically all areas of life on this planet are constantly confronted with complex systems, be it ecosystems, societies, traffic, financial markets, opinion formation and spreading, or the internet and social media. Complex systems are systems composed of many elements that interact strongly with each other, which makes them extremely rich dynamical systems showing a huge range of phenomena. Properties of complex systems that are of particular importance are their efficiency, robustness, resilience, and proneness to collapse. The quantitative tools and concepts needed to understand the co-evolutionary nature of networked systems and their properties are challenging. The book gives a self-contained introduction to these concepts, so that the reader will be equipped with a toolset that allows them to engage in the science of complex systems. Topics covered include random processes of path-deTrade ReviewWell written and structured * Ejay Nsugbe, Mathematics Today *The authors make an excellent job in describing their introduction to Complex Systems theory . . . The book is certainly an excellent start for students (who can find also a series of exercises in every chapter and for practioners). For scientists it is a useful handbook to find whatever needed to start their journey in Complexity Science. * Guido Caldarelli, IMT Alti Studi Lucca, Mathematics Magazine *It seems to me that the authors have succeeded admirably in their aims and that, by helping to train and enthuse the next generation of researchers on complex systems, their book will contribute substantially towards overcoming any possible bottleneck that is impeding further progress. * Peter V. E. McClintock, Department of Physics, Lancaster University, Contemporary Physics *This book is a comprehensive introduction to quantitative approaches to complex adaptive systems, starting from basic principles. It also equips the reader with a basic self-contained toolkit for engaging in complex systems science. It extends earlier classical literature in the field to summarize in a clear, structured, and comprehensive way the methodological progress made in complex systems science over the past 20 years. * Mathematical Reviews Clippings *This book will surely become a standard text for anyone who wants to seriously understand complexity no matter what their background or stage of career. It is written from a physicists perspective, stressing mechanism, underlying principles and mathematical rigour, yet is eminently readable and pedagogical. * Geoffrey West, Santa Fe Institute *Complexity until now has been lacking a strong theoretical underpinning. Now it has one. This book is a tour de force. Excellent! * W. Oxford University Press Richard Cantillon Entrepreneur and Economist
Book SynopsisThis is a study of Irish-born Richard Cantillon, eighteenth century banker and economist whose Essai sur la Nature du Commerce en General (1755), published twenty-one years after his death, remains a significant contribution to the development of monetary theory. Cantillon''s life was an exciting story of involvement in high-level international banking, and speculation in foreign exchanges, commodities and stocks at the time of the South Sea Bubble. His death occurred in mysterious circumstances.Trade ReviewIt is a remarkable story, and the complexities of Cantillon's affairs are unravelled by Antoin Murphy with marvellous lucidity. Read it as an account of high finance in an age when financial sophistication was galloping ahead of the appropriate codes of business ethics. It must surely establish Cantillon's biographer as a master of this difficult genre of historical writing. * Business History *This is a fascinating piece of historical detective work. Oxford University Press The Rules of Security
Book SynopsisThis book demystifies and explains a subject that affects every one of us in our private lives and at work. Security is a practical discipline concerned with safeguarding lives, property, information, wealth, reputations, and social wellbeing. It is the basis of civilised society. People, businesses, and nations cannot thrive in its absence, whereas the right kind of security frees us to live fulfilling lives. But deciding what is needed, and then making it happen, is not easy. The threats to our security are complex and continually evolving, as criminals, hackers, terrorists, and hostile foreign states continually find new ways of staying one step ahead of us, their potential victims. At the same time, we are continually creating new vulnerabilities as we adopt new technologies and new ways of working. Those who do not understand the fundamentals of security, risk, and resilience open themselves, and those around them, to avoidable dangers, needless anxieties, and unnecessary costs. Oxford University Press Prosperity
Book SynopsisDoes business just exist to maximise shareholder profit? The belief it does has had disastrous consequences for our economies, environment, politics, and societies, argues Colin Mayer. In an urgent call for reform, he sets out an agenda to remake the corporation into a powerful force for promoting economic and social wellbeing in its fullest sense.Trade ReviewMayer of the Saïd Business School at Oxford is one of the world's foremost critics of the idea that the aim of companies is to maximise shareholder value. This, he argues cogently, represents a betrayal of one of humanity's most extraordinary inventions. * Martin Wolf, Books of the Year 2018, The Financial Times *[A] remarkable and radical new book. * Martin Wolf, The Financial Times *Mayer's manifesto recasts the company's place in society. * Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson, the Financial Times04/01/2019 *His [Colin Mayer's] book is a resounding paean and radical road map towards a bright future for the corporation and capitalism. * Andrew Hill, The Financial Times *The book is far more than a manifesto for change ... Mayer's book performs a great service. * Richard Bronk, the Society of Professional Economists, Reading Room (open access) *Excellent ... a vitally important subject and it's a really well-written book. * Diane Coyle, The Enlightened Economist *A book that will transform the attitudes and perspectives of corporations. * Robert L. Brown, Juriste International *A powerful reply to the steadily increasing criticism of free market business... So far, the defenders of capitalism have failed to find a convincing voice or to offer any significant ways to improve how business is perceived. Now Colin Mayer provides answers and a coherent manifesto for change. * Peter Chadwick, IEDP Book Reviews *Our world does not have long for business to escape its 40 year-long capture by the Chicago school. This book is an historic milestone in economic theory because it marks the final nail in Milton Friedman's intellectual coffin. It does this by illuminating a pragmatic pathway for business and policy makers to follow, to escape an anachronistic orthodoxy that is killing our beautiful planet and our precious communities. They must study it closely and then move fast, so that we all - and those who come after us - might avoid calamity and, instead, prosper. * James Perry, Chairman of Cook *Here is the case for reinventing the corporation so that it serves human well-being. Colin Mayer shows both why an exclusive focus on shareholder value is damaging, and how purposeful changes could support trustworthy corporations that combine social and business benefits. * Baroness Onora O'Neill of Bengarve, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Cambridge *In his humane and readable book, Colin Mayer makes a compelling case for a new concept of the corporation, and the need to treat corporate purpose as far more than shareholder value. In showing how restoring trust is key to a true future prosperity, it will reframe much of our thinking on this central subject. * The Hon. Mr Justice William Blair, High Court Judge of England and Wales. *A wonderful manifesto for change and essential reading for any who remain to be convinced that business can - and should - be a force for a societal good. One of the most insightful and comprehensive accounts yet of how - and why - the corporation needs to change if it is to meet the needs and expectations of a new era. Thoughtful and well-argued, Mayer has done the cause of enlightened capitalism great service. * Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever *Rarely in the history of economics and law does a person observe the current state of the world, recognize its deficiencies, and put forth a policy and paradigm that is destined to change the world. John Maynard Keynes in the twenties and thirties and now Colin Mayer are prime examples. This book is destined to be the "bible" of the Mayer-Paradigm of corporate governance and the template for the policy changes that are necessary to implement it. * Martin Lipton, Senior Partner Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz *Businesses have a duty to do well by stakeholders as well as shareholders. How did too many corporations lose their sense of purpose? What is the right path to build responsible, sustainable relationships with society? This insight-rich book offers a comprehensive guide for restoring trust between companies, consumers, and communities. Professor Mayer makes a compelling argument that the purpose and values of modern corporations have been diluted and it will take the work of executives, legislators, regulators, bankers, investors, and even shareholders to fix. * Dominic Barton, Global Managing Partner Emeritus, McKinsey & Company *The financial crisis and its aftermath called for answers - questions were raised instead. Our corporate and political environments have been severely shaken for more than a decade. We have to find new approaches and look for better answers to bring our social market economies into balance. Colin Mayer relentlessly challenges conventional wisdom, combining diverse academic fields and bringing business to meet academia. Prosperity is building on a wealth of research looking at the broader picture and its many corners to seek appropriate answers to the challenges of our world. Is 'purpose first, prosperity follows' the answer? * Daniela Weber-Rey, non-executive director of HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt and Fnac-Darty *Colin Mayer has elevated the conversation about business and society. Bold enough to reimagine an economic system, specific enough to drive action, Prosperity introduces the higher-order thinking necessary to build a more Inclusive Capitalism. * Lynn Forester de Rothschild, CEO of E.L. Rothschild and the Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism *With characteristic courage and purposeful passion, Mayer challenges the status quo as to who corporations serve and benefit. Prosperity presents a paradigm shift, revealing tomorrow's corporation today. It marks the start of a new age of enlightenment, which will stimulate the sensibilities of all who care about the role of business in society. * Guy Jubb, former Global Head of Governance and Stewardship, Standard Life Investments *This is a timely and highly insightful treatise on the urgent need to revisit today's misguided and simplistic views on the purpose of the corporation. It is a significant contribution addressing the growing economic and social challenges confronting us today. * Cyrus Ardelan, Chairman, Citigroup Global Markets Ltd *Prosperity makes a limpidly clear and convincing case for an urgent re-think of the role of business in society. The fifty years since Friedman gave the doctrine of 'shareholder value' totemic significance have seen the interests of proprietors, governments and communities diverge. This has produced unacceptable inequalities in outcomes and shocking destruction of the environment. The arguments Colin makes for radical reform of the role of the corporation in society are compelling, and rooted in common sense and fairness. I hope that many others involved in defining the purpose of their businesses learn as much from Prosperity as I have. * Peter Norris, Chairman of Virgin Group *One of the most pressing questions facing the world today is 'What is the role of the corporation in society?' Thanks to Professor Colin Mayer we now have a definitive answer: the corporation's role is to fulfill its purpose. In an intellectual and very readable tour de force, Professor Mayer brings to bear an astonishing range of academic disciplines to present a very practical framework for how company's need to be managed today. Oxford University Press, USA Austerity and Recovery in Ireland Europes Poster Child and the Great Recession
Book SynopsisIn international commentary and debate on the effects of the Great Recession and austerity, Ireland has been hailed as the poster child for economic recovery and regeneration out of deep economic and fiscal contraction. While the genesis of Ireland''s financial, economic, and fiscal crisis has been covered in the literature, no systematic analysis has yet been devoted to the period of austerity, to the impact of austerity on institutions and people, or to the roots of economic recovery. In this book a group of Ireland''s leading social scientists present a multidisciplinary analysis of recession and austerity and their effects on economic, business, political, and social life. Individual chapters discuss the fiscal and economic policies implemented, the role of international, and, in particular, of EU institutions, and the effects on businesses, consumption, work, the labour market, migration, political and financial institutions, social inequality and cohesion, housing, and cultural expression. The book shows that Ireland cannot be viewed uncritically as a poster child for austerity. While fiscal contraction provided a basis for stabilizing the perilous finances of the state, economic recovery was due in the main to the long-established structure of Irish economic and business activity, to the importance of foreign direct investment and the dynamic export sector, and to recovery in the international economy. The restructuring and recovery of the financial system was aided by favourable international developments, including historically low interest rates and quantitative easing. Migration flows, nominal wage stability, the protection of social transfer payments, and the involvement of trade unions in severe public sector retrenchment - long-established features of Irish political economy - were of critical importance in the maintenance of social cohesion.Trade ReviewThe many strands of ruin and gradual but not complete recovery are dealt with in a style that is both scholarly and accessible. This richness makes it the best overall single-volume assessment of our recent political and social experience. * Paschal Donohoe, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, The Irish Times *Table of Contents1: William K. Book SynopsisIn this insightful memoir Lennie Goodings takes the reader behind the scenes at Virago, the feminist press that she has led for twenty years. Moving from Virago's early days of independence, through its various commercial incarnations, the author reflects on idealistic publishing and how it feels to be a beacon for change.Trade ReviewAn immersive, lovingly written memoir, whose story resonates beyond publishing. * Johanna Thomas-Corr, The Sunday Times *An inspiring book. * Sarah Baxter, The Sunday Times *Pensive and surprisingly poignant...this book glows with the gratitude of doing [the work of an editor], and in doing so, finding oneself occupying a front seat to feminist history...It's a memoir that doesn't merely look backward, but in its form, in all its limitations, gestures at the work to be done. It's a memoir of a Virago reader. * Parul Sehgal, New York Times *Moving and hugely inspiring ... As a cultural history, A Bite of the Apple is clear. As a reminder of female artists' ongoing fight for space and respect, it's necessary. As a riff on writers and writing, it's essential. * Bidisha, The Observer *What Goodings is so good at drawing out are the interrelations between various social and political movements and their correlatives in publishing and literature. Not only does she recover Virago's story, but she loops in the narratives of various authors and movements, building up a rich and textured historical fabric ... An inspiring, entertaining and insightful read, full of the energy and fervour of hard-won wisdom. * Seán Hewitt, The Irish Times *This history has it all: boardroom wrangles, bestsellers, legendary authors ... fascinating stuff on the complex alchemy of talent, political fashion and marketability that propels certain authors forward at certain times, and the loving effort and attention involved in editing a manuscript. * Melissa Benn, New Statesman *What runs through A Bite of the Apple, unifying it and contributing to its charm, is the passion for books you'd expect, but also an impressive idealism about the ways in which the published word can change society and help readers to become the people they want to be. * Mark Bostridge, The Spectator *This little book is as candid and charming as its cover ... One of the most interesting chapters relates to the craft closest to editor Goodings' heart, the craft of editing and the complex relationship between editor and author. * Jane Hailé, New York Journal of Books *[Goodings'] thoughts on the great industry issues of the day are well worth reading. * DJ Taylor, Literary Review *A Bite of the Apple feels effortless, and so alive to the conversations about women's rights today ... [Goodings'] voice is engaging and full of warmth. * Julie Vuong, BookBrunch *Goodings' account of her life at the inkface vividly, and with immediacy, transports us from those poky London rooms where the mouse that roared was born, into the realpolitik of international publishing. * The Sydney Morning Herald *Consistently fascinating ... a book that shows how Virago transformed the world. * Colin Oehring, The Saturday Paper *Fascinating and beautifully written. * Dan Carrier, Camden New Journal *Informative, lively, reflective, and somehow a poignant mix of honest, generous, and forgiving. * Simon, Shiny New Books *All an apple should be: crisp, tart but sweet, steeped in mysterious history and tangled symbolism, and not a bad missile when it comes to alleyway combat. Oh, and delicious! * Margaret Atwood, on Twitter *There is so very much to enjoy -and learn about- in this engaging book. Oxford University Press Corporations in Evolving Diversity Cognition
Book SynopsisIn this classic text, Masahiko Aoki explores how the 2008-9 financial crisis demanded a re-examination of the role of corporations and the working of financial markets around the world, providing a compelling new analysis of the corporate firm; the role of shareholders, managers and workers; and institutional governance structures. In recent decades the firm has predominantly been seen as an organization run and governed in the interests of shareholders, where management act as the agent of shareholders, and the workers simply as instruments for share-value maximization. This book reverses this viewpoint. It sees corporations as associational cognitive systems where ''cognitive actions'' are distributed amongst managers and workers, with shareholders supplying ''cognitive tools'' and monitoring their use in the systems. Aoki analyses the different relationships that can exist between shareholders, managers, and workers from this perspective, and identifies a range of different models of organizational architecture and associated governance structures. He also discusses ways in which corporations act as players in social, political, and organizational games, as well as global economic games; how these inter-related social dynamics may change particular distinctive national structures into the diversity incorporated in the global corporate landscape; and how they now call for new roles for financial markets.Trade ReviewAn intriguing read. * Ethical Corporation Magazine *Masahiko Aoki uses the social mathematics of game theory to reveal the deep structure of corporate governance systems, in the process explaining the persistence of diversity under conditions of globalization. His profound and highly original analysis speaks directly to the issue of corporate governance reform in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008-9. * Simon Deakin, Professor of Law, University of Cambridge *The recent wave of fraud, corruption, and fiscal irresponsibility at the highest corporate levels dramatizes the need for a model of the modern corporation that is at the same time deeply economic in the recognition of the centrality of incentives, and deeply sociological in the recognition of the centrality of social norms and a culture of corporate morality. Professor Aoki has combined his magisterial knowledge of business organization with a foundational study of the role of culture in epistemic game theory to produce, for the first time, a truly transdisciplinary model of the corporation. * Herbert Gintis, Santa Fe Institute *This is a path breaking book that provides a rigorous analysis of the cognitive underpinnings of corporations. It gives fundamental insights into the diversity of organizational forms that exist and the association of these with the historical, political, social, and technological contexts within which they operate. As with so much of Professor Aoki's work, it will radically alter the way in which we view the corporation. * Colin Mayer, Peter Moores Dean, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford *A pioneering contribution which formalizes in game theoretic language complex institutional structure and environment of the corporation both at a moment of time and over time. * Douglass C. North, Nobel Laureate in Economics 1993, Spencer T. Oxford University Press Macroeconomics
Book SynopsisCarlin and Soskice connect students with contemporary research and policy in macroeconomics. The authors' 3-equation model - extended to include the financial system and with an integrated treatment of inequality - equips students with a method they can apply to the enduring challenges stirred by the financial crisis and the Great Recession.Trade ReviewThis enlightening book is a wonderful guide to the key topics of macroeconomics: inflation, monetary policy, including at the zero lower bound, growth and innovation, inequality, exchange rates and more. Very closely connected to the real world, Carlin and Soskice's book brings a wealth of data and historical examples into the discussion in a very pedagogical way. It covers extremely well the links between risk taking, financial cycles and crises which are at the heart of our modern economies. It has also an essential and very timely chapter on commodity price shocks. This is what macroeconomics is about: first order questions, affecting the lives of billions of people, clear modelling and rigorous thinking informed by data and history. Very exciting! * Hélène Rey, Professor of Economics, London Business School *This wonderful textbook achieves a rare feat: the material is consistent with work at the current research frontier but nevertheless remains highly accessible. I first learned macroeconomics from an earlier volume of this textbook, when I was an undergraduate student twenty years ago. Now as then the core of the book is its simple 3-equation model for studying business cycles and stabilization policy. But this latest volume also takes on board many of the key developments over the last two decades. Specifically, this is the first textbook to integrate the lessons of the exploding literature on heterogeneous-agent macroeconomics and of the new HANK models. As Carlin and Soskice write: "it's time for 'inequality' to have a place in the title of a macroeconomics textbook" - I couldn't agree more! * Benjamin Moll, Professor of Economics, London School of Economics *Beautifully written and rich in data and historical examples, 'Macroeconomics' sets out the building blocks of macroeconomic modelling and guides readers to the frontier of the discipline. The book underscores the crucial role played by institutions, inequality and innovation in contemporary economies. Once you start reading it, you cannot stop it! * Silvana Tenreyro, Professor of Economics, Department of Economics, London School of Economics and External Member of the Monetary Policy Committee, Bank of England *Carlin and Soskice have written a masterful treatise on modern macroeconomics. The authors bring to life the fundamental importance of balance for the healthy functioning of an economy - not only the balance between supply and demand, but also in terms of equitable distribution of income. They carefully walk us through when finance is useful, and when its excesses can be harmful for the economy. Most importantly, the authors explain why institutions, i.e. the manner in which a society chooses to govern itself, are central to how far an economy prospers. * Atif Mian, Professor of Economics, Princeton University, Co-author of 'House of Debt' (2014, The University of Chicago Press) *Wendy Carlin and David Soskice have once more achieved a pedagogical tour de force, bringing frontier research to the undergraduate level. The increased focus on inequality, its sources and its implications, is a particularly welcome addition. * Olivier Blanchard, formerly Chief Economist, IMF, Professor of Economics, MIT, Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute *This remarkable new macroeconomics text brings upper-level undergraduates to the frontier of research and policy. The exposition is at the same time accessible, engaging, and relevant to current concerns about the broad consequences of policies -- intended and unintended. The book's attention to historical and institutional context, as well as its treatment of innovation and technical change, set it apart from other textbooks at this level. * Maurice Obstfeld, Professor of Economics, University of California Berkeley, Co-author of 'Foundations of International Macroeconomics' (1996, MIT Press) *Austerity, financial crises, quantitative easing, artificial intelligence: this book has it all. A macroeconomics text that explains the data and logic that policymakers really do use. Read this book and understand the world. * Jonathan Haskel, Professor of Economics, Imperial College London and External Member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee *This is the only undergraduate macroeconomics textbook that weaves a serious treatment of inequality into a core three-equation model, and, at the same time, it also includes an unparalleled introduction to incorporating the financial system in this framework. As such, it marks a serious departure from most macroeconomics textbooks, which tend to relegate distribution and finance to the secondary status of extensions or special topics. The accompanying simulation tool also makes the book exceptionally classroom friendly, not only by providing instructors a visual way to summarize comparative statics, but also by giving students a tool with which they can independently explore extensions of classroom discussions. * Leila E. Davis, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Massachusetts Boston *Economics students want to understand the world we live in, and no other macroeconomics textbook satisfies this desire to engage with the world's most significant issues quite like Carlin and Soskice. With its intuitive, tractable, and realistic approach, their textbook equips students to easily comprehend even the most complex macroeconomic concepts and their relationship to real-world problems like inequality and economic shocks. The 3-equation model helps students grasp how economic shocks affect the economy, while the new book's analysis of inequality gives a more thorough understanding of how policy responses can impact people's lives. The book equips the next generation of economics graduates to make a meaningful impact in the world. The new book also links to the CORE Econ Project, enabling programme leaders to create a more integrated curriculum in macroeconomics across years. * Stefania Paredes Fuentes, Associate Professor, University of Warwick *The coverage on environmental and social sustainability of production is much appreciated. * Christina Wolf, Senior Lecturer in Economics, University of Hertfordshire *Employers value graduates comfortable to deal with real world issues, using appropriate theory and data skills. Using this textbook will be an ideal way to foster such a graduate. * Marco Gundermann, Head of Economics, International Relations and Development, University of Northampton *Carlin and Soskice offer a clear, balanced, engaging, and forward-looking perspective on a wide range of topics, from short-term monetary policy to growth & innovation. Students will appreciate the authors' crystal-clear exposition, along with the careful balance of technical detail and intuitive real-world examples presented. * Ceri Davies, Associate Professor in Economics, University of Birmingham *The book's development and applications of the 3-equation model make it easy to introduce students to more advanced theoretical ideas and current policy issues. It is straightforward to pick chunks of the book and incorporate other material. Resources provided to instructors and students are very helpful. * Jennifer Smith, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Warwick *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part 1: Basics: Demand Side, Supply Side, and Policy Maker 1: The demand side 2: The supply side 3: The 3-equation model and macroeconomic policy 4: Expectations and monetary policy Part 2: Money, Banking, Monetary and Fiscal Policy 5: Money, banking, and the macro-economy 6: Monetary policy 7: Fiscal policy Part 3: Financial Instability in the Macroeconomy 8: Sources of financial sector instability 9: Financial sector risk and the global financial crisis: Applying the models 10: Financial stability policy Part 4: Open Economy Macroeconomics 11: The 3-equation model in the open economy 12: The open economy: The demand and supply sides 13: Open economy extensions I: Oil shocks, imbalances, and interdependence 14: Open economy extensions II: Fixed exchange rates and the Eurozone Part 5: The Supply Side, Technology, and Growth 15: Supply-side institutions, policies, and performance 17: Growth and innovation 18: The ICT revolution, productivity puzzle, and political economy of uneven growth Part 6: Macroeconomics With Inequality 18: Heterogeneous agent macroeconomics: Origins, progress, and challenges

Oxford University Press (UK) Data Imperative
Book SynopsisCompanies across all industries are engaging in digital transformation to harness the power of advanced information technologies. Building on interviews and diverse case studies, this book provides an in-depth look at how data and algorithms are reshaping management practices, organizational structures, corporate culture, and work roles. Henri Schildt develops a broad framework for understanding digitalization not as a technological change but as a new normative mind-set, here called ''the data imperative''. It describes the new managerial ideals that compel companies to pursue digital omniscience and omnipotence-abilities to represent and understand the world through real-time data flow and to control customer experiences, physical equipment, and workers with software. The efforts to complement and replace human expertise with data and smart algorithms are associated with shifts in strategic priorities, adoption of powerful modular architectures, new organizational structures, and theTable of Contents1: Digital Transformation 2: The Data Imperative 3: Strategic Priorities in the Digital Era 4: Complexity and Modularity 5: Organizing Data-Driven Companies 6: Artificial Intelligence and Human Expertise 7: Algorithmic Management of Humans 8: The Promises and Pitfalls of the Data Imperative

Oxford University Press The Future of the Professions
Book SynopsisThis book predicts the decline of today''s professions and introduces the people and systems that will replace them. In an internet-enhanced society, according to Richard Susskind and Daniel Susskind, we will neither need nor want doctors, teachers, accountants, architects, the clergy, consultants, lawyers, and many others, to work as they did in the 20th century. The Future of the Professions explains how increasingly capable technologies - from telepresence to artificial intelligence - will place the ''practical expertise'' of the finest specialists at the fingertips of everyone, often at no or low cost and without face-to-face interaction. The authors challenge the ''grand bargain'' - the arrangement that grants various monopolies to today''s professionals. They argue that our current professions are antiquated, opaque and no longer affordable, and that the expertise of their best is enjoyed only by a few. In their place, they propose five new models for producing and distributing expertise in society. The book raises profound policy issues, not least about employment (they envisage a new generation of ''open-collared workers'') and about control over online expertise (they warn of new ''gatekeepers'') - in an era when machines become more capable than human beings at most tasks. With a new preface exploring recent critical developments, this updated edition builds on the authors'' groundbreaking research into more than a dozen professions. Illustrated with numerous examples from each, this is the first book to assess and question the relevance of the professions in the 21st century.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition Perhaps the forthcoming tidal wave of technology set to engulf us all will throw up new opportunities for the legal profession — which is probably why just about every lawyer in London, so we are told, has bought a copy of this challenging, provocative, timely and important book. If you care about the future of your profession and wish to add further comment to the raging controversies surrounding it, better get yourself a copy now. * Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richard Green Chambers *In The Future of the Professions, father-and-son authors Richard and Daniel Susskind do a remorselessly effective job of demolishing the self-deception most people engage in when comparing themselves to machines. * Richard Waters, Financial Times *The authors are undoubtedly right that the professions will change more in the next quarter-century than they have in the previous three. * The Economist *Remarkable work. * Tom Watson, The Guardian *This is a bold book ... The Future of the Professions helps us to recognise the professions' current methods as convoluted, self-serving rituals designed to wrap simple tasks in mystique. * Giles Wilkes, Prospect *The Future of the Professions is a paradox that only a human mind could appreciate: the inevitable death of the professions is presented in an expert, original and witty work by two professionals whose skills (in thinking, writing and consultancy) are unlikely any time soon to be replicated by a machine. * David Pannick, The Times *The Future of the Professions: How Technology Will Transform the Work of Human Experts, is a must read for anyone who wants to gain insights into where the legal profession is going ... Nothing else I have read more clearly and convincingly elucidates the future of legal services and how technology will transform the traditional practice of law. * Dan Pinnington, Slaw *An act of delicious iconoclasm. * Prospect Magazine *Both a good read and a good starter for strategic planning in professional firms * Chris Yapp, Future Tech Blog *I suggest that everyone who considers themselves 'professional' reads this book, especially those who are aged, say, 20-45, who need to secure their role in the new world of work. The authors predict that "our professions will be dismantled incrementally". If they are right, todays lawyers need to prepare for it, and the sooner the better. * Dan Bindman, Legal Futures *A fascinating and challenging book. * Medium *The study is exceptionally well informed and important contribution to thinking about the future of professional work * Network Review *As the saying is, the future is now and we ignore it at our peril. Please read this book. * Law Skills *The book is written in a relaxed, flowing and easily-consumable style ... a read of The Future of the Professions is time very well-spent. * Jeremy Hopkins, Future of Law *Everyone interested in the future well-being of society must read this thoroughly researched and compelling book - to understand how technology can and will be used to enable the public to do far more for themselves. In reshaping our system of justice so that it can more cost-effectively underpin our democratic society and its prosperity, I have had the benefit of the Susskinds core thesis how to use technology not simply to enable the legal professions to do better what they now do, but to reshape justice for the benefit of the public. * Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales *If the Susskinds are right we are at the start of a social revolution. Technology has begun to transform social class, economic activity, political discourse, working life and the limits of human activity. In The Future of the Professions they relentlessly and unyieldingly but also entertainingly and elegantly set about proving their point. I started knowing that their argument was important, I finished convinced that it was right. This is a necessary book. It was necessary that it be written and necessary that you read it. * Daniel Finkelstein, The Times *Impressive new book. * Edward Fennell, The Times *I know of no better book for anyone interested in the future of skilled jobs and society. Drawing on an astounding range of sources and the latest research, The Future of the Professions offers vital insights into the unprecedented disruption facing all the professions. * Professor Ian Goldin, Professor of Globalisation and Development and Director of the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford *In this magisterial survey Richard and Daniel Susskind demolish each profession's faith in its immutable uniqueness. Instead they trace inexorable and universal forces that will drive disintermediation, deconstruction and disruption. Written with scholarly thoroughness, this is an urgent manifesto and practical blueprint for the leaders of every professional firm. * Philip Evans, Senior Partner & BCG Fellow, The Boston Consulting Group *Table of ContentsPreface to the Updated Edition IntroductionI: Change 1: The Grand Bargain 2: From the Vanguard 3: Patterns Across the ProfessionsII: Theory 4: Information and Technology 5: Production and Distribution of KnowledgeIII: Implications 6: Objections and Anxieties 7: After the Professions Conclusion: What Future Should We Want?

Oxford University Press Democracy Under Siege
Book SynopsisThe Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 was catalyst for the most precipitous economic downturn in eight decades. This book examines how the GFC and ensuing Great Recession affected electoral politics in the world''s developed democracies. The initial wave of research on the crisis concluded it did little to change the established relationships between voters, parties, and elections. Yet nearly a decade since the initial shock, the political landscape has changed in many ways, the extent to which has not been fully explained by existing studies. Democracy Under Siege? pushes against the received wisdom by advancing a framework for understanding citizen attitudes, preferences, and behaviour. It makes two central claims. First, while previous studies of the GFC tend to focus on an immediate impact of the crisis, Hellwig, Kweon, and Vowles argue that economic malaise has a long lasting impact. In addition to economic shock, the economic recovery has a significant impact on citizens'' assessment of political elites. Second, the authors argue that unanticipated exogenous shocks like the GFC grants party elites an opening for political manoeuvre through public policy and rhetoric. As a result, political elites have a high degree of agency to shape public perceptions and behaviour. Political parties can strategically moderate citizens'' economic uncertainty, mobilise/demobilise voters, and alter individuals'' political preferences. By leveraging data from over 150,000 individuals across over 100 nationally-representative post-election surveys from the 1990s to 2017, this book shows how economic change during a tumultuous era affected economic perceptions, policy demands, political participation, and the vote. The Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) is a collaborative program of research among election study teams from around the world. Participating countries include a common module of survey questions in their post-election studies. The resulting data are deposited along with voting, demographic, district, and macro variables. The studies are then merged into a single, free, public dataset for use in comparative study and cross-level analysis. The set of volumes in this series is based on these CSES modules, and the volumes address the key theoretical issues and empirical debates in the study of elections and representative democracy. Some of the volumes will be organized around the theoretical issues raised by a particular module, while others will be thematic in their focus. Taken together, these volumes will provide a rigorous and ongoing contribution to understanding the expansion and consolidation of democracy in the twenty-first century. Series editors: Hans-Dieter Klingemann and Ian McAllister.Trade ReviewExamines the impact of the 2007-08 global financial crisis (GFC) on public opinion toward democracy, focusing on how the policy preferences of political elites and the policy responses of governments shaped citizens' experiences of crisis and recovery. * Journal of Economic Literature (Volume 59, no. 1) *Table of ContentsPart I: The Crisis' Long Shadow on Democratic Politics 1: Continuity and Change: The Shock, the Recovery, and the Mass Politics of Economic Crises 2: The Great Recession and Electoral Politics, 2007-2016 Part II: Public Perceptions and Policy Demands 3: Breaking the Bargain? Oxford University Press Neoliberalism
Book SynopsisVery Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, InspiringAnchored in the principles of free-market economics, neoliberalism emerged in the 1990s as the world''s most dominant economic paradigm. It has been associated with various political leaders from Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Bill Clinton, to Tony Blair, Barack Obama, and Manmohan Singh. Neoliberalism even penetrated deeply into communist China''s powerful economic system. However, the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the related European Sovereign Debt Crisis triggered a decade of economic volatility and insecurity that boosted the fortunes of the 1 per cent while saddling the 99 per cent with stagnant wages and precarious work. As a result of this Great Recession, neoliberalism fortunes have waned considerably. This downward trend further accelerated with the recent surge of national populism around the world that brought to power outspoken critics of neoliberalism like Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro, and Narendra Modi. Is neoliberalism doomed or will it regain its former glory? And what are the major types of neoliberalism, and how did they evolve over the decades? Responding to these crucial questions, this Very Short introduction explores the considerable variations of neoliberalism around the world, and discusses the origins, evolution, and core ideas of neoliberalism. This new edition brings the story of neoliberalism up to date, and asks whether new versions of neoliberalism might succeed in drowning out the rising tide of national populism and its nostalgic longing for a return to territorial sovereignty and national greatness.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Oxford University Press A Primer of Ecological Aquaculture
Book SynopsisAquaculture exemplifies the ongoing global struggle to strike a sustainable balance between the conflicting needs of a rapidly increasing world population, human health, ecosystem health, the welfare of wild and domesticated animals, and the economic principles of globalized economies. On the one hand, aquaculture has great potential for providing us with a healthy and nutritious food supply whilst alleviating pressure on captive fisheries and reducing fisheries-induced habitat destruction, overfishing, genetic modification of wild populations, and wholesale waste of bycatch. On the other hand, aquaculture relies heavily on clean water, an increasingly precious (and dwindling) resource that is subject to intense pressure of being used for many competing objectives. This concise primer introduces students to the basic concepts, opportunities, and challenges of aquaculture with an emphasis on ecological considerations. It provides a critical assessment of current aquaculture practices frTrade ReviewThis important new volume on aquaculture presents a remarkable synthesis of all the key issues involved in the commercial culturing of freshwater and marine species. It provides a comprehensive overview of the basic biological elements of aquaculture, including new information on the use of genomic and genetic tools, and incorporates these analyses into a broader ecological, environmental, and sociological context. The emphasis on strategies for protecting water quality-a vital part of the aquaculture enterprise-is especially well-presented. The volume deserves wide readership among students and scientists who not only have interests in aquaculture, but also in sustaining robust aquatic ecosystems in freshwater and marine environments. * George N. Somero, David and Lucile Packard Emeritus Professor of Marine Science, Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, USA *Readers can obtain an excellent overall summation of the problems and ways forward as people rely more and more on augmented fish and seafood production. Though the style is technical, this primer is appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students in various fields, including ecology, geography, and more. * Choice *Table of ContentsPreface Part I: GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGICAL AQUACULTURE 1: Aquaculture Terminology and Basic Concepts 2: The Historical Origins of Aquaculture 3: Seafood and Beyond: Key Aquaculture Objectives 4: Aquaculture Systems as Mesocosms 5: Integrated Multitrophic Polycultures 6: Domestication of Aquaculture Species Part II: BIOLOGY AND CULTURE OF AQUATIC SPECIES 7: Overview of Aquaculture Species Diversity 8: Environmentally Sustainable Plant Aquaculture 9: Aquaculture of Sponges and Cnidarians 10: Mollusc Aquaculture 11: Crustacean Aquaculture 12: Ornamental Fishes 13: Aquaculture of Freshwater Fish 14: Anadromous Fish 15: Catadromous Fish Part III: WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS 16: Abiotic Parameters 17: Feeds, Waste, and Stress 18: Infectious Diseases

Oxford University Press Creating Knowledge over Distance
Book SynopsisCreating Knowledge over Distance shows that economic knowledge creation fundamentally depends on, benefits from, and is structured by temporary geographical proximity - that is, by economic actors meeting in person or interacting in a co-present context to discuss business opportunities, problems and solutions are face to face. During the Covid-19 pandemic, personal meetings often had to be reduced or were replaced by virtual meetings, leading many observers to assume a fundamental reconfiguration of economic life in the future as face-to-face interaction may be substituted by virtual interaction through the use of new information and communication technologies. While communication patterns certainly changed during this period, this book demonstrates that the face-to-face meetings the authors investigate across a sequence of 11 chapters with different knowledge-creation contexts are unlikely to be fully substituted by distant interactions - and may even become more important over time. The book develops the argument by systematically analyzing three configurations of knowledge transfers over distance: (1) international community gatherings, such as trade fairs, delegation travel, conventions and conferences, (2) mobile business practices, including intra-firm business coordination, inter-firm projects, producer-user meetings, and corporate expansions/inter-firm negotiations, as well as (3) transnational networks, related to transnational corporations and transnational migrant firms (including new transnational firms/new Argonauts and transnational family networks).

Oxford University Press Negotiation A Very Short Introduction Very Short
Book SynopsisVery Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Everyone negotiates. Whenever any person, company, or country needs someone else to accomplish something, they must negotiate. Negotiation is essential for peace and international relations, but also for economically efficient trades and bargains in business, and for problem solving skills in workplaces, families, and interpersonal interactions. This Very Short Introduction provides a comprehensive and accessible review of both conceptual and behavioural approaches to the human process of negotiation. Carrie Menkel-Meadow draws on research in constituent fields of human psychology, diplomacy, law, business, anthropology, game theory, decision making, international relations, sociology, public policy, and economics, suggesting models for creative problem solving to often intractable problems. Considering that most people are tense and frightened of what they perceive to be scarce resource confrontations with opponents and competitors, Menkel-Meadow offers different ways to plan for and approach others to solve human problems and seek solutions that satisfy both parties. Alongside this, Menkel-Meadow summarises recent research on the variations of human behaviour, providing vivid examples from history and current affairs to solve some of the most difficult problems.
