Nova Science Publishers Inc The Teachers' Lounge: Tales Told and Lessons
Book SynopsisBehind the doors of teachers' lounges, teachers share with each other. They share their frustrations and enjoyment. They also share stories about the students they serve. Sometimes these stories are meant to entertain, and at other times, these stories are designed to illustrate a message about the nature of students and the importance of teacher behaviours. Through the edited book volume, The Teachers' Lounge: Tales Told and Lessons Learned, the editors manage to capture the spirit of teacher communalism in print form. Fun, heart-warming, and even bewildering within-school tales are shared. Through the narratives presented, associated lessons are also shared. These lessons elevate new, as well as experienced, teacher capacity and encourage responsible teaching behaviours. Each chapter ends with questions and statements for reflection and discussion, creating a comprehensively engaging and didactic experience from which all teachers could benefit. Though it was especially developed for new and emerging teachers, this volume serves as a didactic glimpse into teaching and a powerful resource for all teachers.Trade Review"This volume made me reflect upon my time as a teacher. I could relate to every word within it. I also got a good laugh." -- Garrett Dennis, Councilman, City of Jacksonville, Florida"This volume is a considerate contribution to help prepare new teachers for the reality of the classroom. John Catt Educational Ltd So What Now? Time for learning in your school to
Book Synopsis“It is not the role of schools to solve the climate crisis or any of the other multiple crises now facing humankind. But it is powerfully their role, if they so choose, to equip young people as well as possible to deal with the consequences of the serious problems they will be inheriting from their elders, not betters.” Could it be our collective failure to respond effectively to the threat of the climate emergency or the challenges of the pandemic has been shaped to a small but significant degree by the nature of the learning that happens in our schools and a failure to enable young people to learn appropriately there? That question lies at the heart of this thought-provoking new book as it unpicks the concept of deep learning for future sustainability. This combines deep understanding with action, and links both to moral purpose. It is not enough just to be concerned about climate change - awareness must lead to action. The book draws on an eclectic range of sources, case studies of actual practice, critical perspectives and opportunities for reflection. The authors argue that first and foremost it is for educators and leaders to get on as best they can in their own school context to do what is both necessary and right to secure learning fit for a just and sustainable future irrespective of governmental lead in these matters. In doing so the authors set out some clear evidence-informed principles for school development and leadership that are central to the success of that mission.Trade ReviewThis is a timely and thoughtful contribution to our debate in the system. Rather than getting stuck in the critique, the authors focus us on the future in practical and imaginative ways. This is a critical moment for us to rethink, building on the learnings and insights of recent years, and this book helps pose some powerful questions for us to consider. -- Liz Robinson, CEO Big Education

John Catt Educational Ltd School self-review – a sensible approach: How to
Book SynopsisThis book looks at the sensible and meaningful role of self-review in creating sustainable improvement in all areas across secondary schools. It outlines a self-review approach focussed on key principles which ensure this approach is transparent, purposeful, does not negatively impact on workload, that does not use the same approach for all teams and that does actually result in clear ideas for school improvement. It discusses claims of effective self-review including that it challenges thinking, leads to improvement, incorporates a range of stakeholders, skills people up, and helps build professional communities. The book is full of examples and case studies so that the reader can transfer some of these ideas to their context, discuss them at meetings and help generate new ideas. It challenges the 'deep dive' approach as something that should be left to Ofsted and instead suggests that leaders should know daily what is happening in their schools, and instead work with staff to design self-review activities that are bespoke and fit for purpose. The main theme is around 'improve not prove', where stakeholders feel involved, valued and empowered to be change-makers at a range of scales. It examines how effective self-review can reduce workload and support improvements in wellbeing.

Taylor & Francis Inc Understanding the Adult Learner: Perspectives and
Book SynopsisAdults seek out learning for very different reasons in different contexts, and this book is intended to support adult educators’ development in responding to this rich array. There is no single way to be an adult learner, and so it should not be surprising that there is no single way to be an adult educator. However, the authors believe that all educators must demonstrate a commitment to meeting adult learners where they are. Adult educators should help learners move forward not only with new content knowledge, information, and skills, but also with new ways of making meaning and seeing themselves, their role, and the world. This volume introduces many theories and concepts that can help adult educators do this effectively.Trade Review“Alisa Belzer and Brian Dashew have assembled an outstanding text on adult learning. This edited text brings together established and emerging scholars who offer multiple perspectives on learners, the individual and social context of learning, and the key processes and approaches for adult learning. This text should be required in every graduate program and professional development activity that prepares practitioners and scholars of adult learning.”“Adult education is a rich and diverse field of study that includes not only formal training and development, but also self-directed learning, community action, learning that occurs in social settings as well as the classroom, and much, much more. It is above all learner-centered that respects the intellect and capacity every adult brings to their community. Understanding the Adult Learner eloquently captures this richness and diversity, meeting the needs of those who are new to our field, as well as, being a valuable resource to seasoned scholars and practitioners. Though this book has many strengths, I see its greatest strength in how it bridges theory to practice, and practice to theory. It is a book that is a worthy addition to one's library.”Jeff Zacharakis, Professor, Kansas State University“Belzer and Dashew’s Understanding the Adult Learner: Perspectives and Practices is an exceptional book that explores many facets of adult learning and development theories, bridging the theory-to-practice gap in an accessible and readable way. In each chapter, scholars/authors focus on the purposes of adult education through distinct theoretical lenses, providing insightful reflections and discussions of learning and development theories, adult learners in diverse contexts, and actions adult educators can take to support them on their learning journeys. This volume is an essential addition to the field and should be required reading for all adult education scholars, graduate students, and practitioners.”Catherine A. Hansman, emeritus professor of Adult Learning & Development, Cleveland State University“This comprehensive volume offers emerging scholars and practitioners in adult education insights into a wide variety of theoretical perspectives. The book is highly readable and loaded with practice-based ideas informed by theory. The authors are theorists and educators with extensive expertise in their areas of scholarship. Readers are encouraged to explore and consider the theories from a critically reflective perspective with regard to the learning context and positionality of the learners.”Randee Lipson Lawrence, Professor Emeritus, Adult Education, National Louis University, Adjunct Professor, Teacher’s College, Columbia University"This book is compelling in its grasp of the 21st Century issues and challenges facing the field of adult and continuing education. Drawing upon the insights of many iconic authors and their impactful theoretical and practical literary contributions that have shaped our research and practice for over 30 years, this text is indispensable for developing professionals seeking to understand the depth and breadth of the field."Larry Martin, Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee“This book makes a significant contribution to the study and practice of adult education as it brings together a collection of foundational theories, perspectives, and concepts that will enhance teaching and learning in the profession. A major strength of the book is its translational approach where in each chapter, content experts present theories and concepts followed by ideas for practical pedagogical implications. Kudos to the editors for the design! John Catt Educational Ltd Huh: Curriculum conversations between subject and
Book SynopsisSchools need to have purchase on the curriculum: why they teach the subjects beyond preparation for examinations, what they are intending to achieve with the curriculum, how well it is planned and enacted in classrooms and how they know whether it’s doing what it’s supposed to. Fundamental to this understanding are the conversations between subject leaders and their line managers. However, there is sometimes a mismatch between the subject specialisms of senior leaders and those they line manage. If I don’t know the terrain and the importance of a particular subject, how can I talk intelligently with colleagues who are specialists? This book sets out to offer some tentative answers to these questions. Each of the national curriculum subjects is discussed with a subject leader and provides an insight into what they view as the importance of the subject, how they go about ensuring that knowledge, understanding and skills are developed over time, how they talk about the quality of the schemes in their departments and what they would welcome from senior leaders by way of support. We have chosen this way of opening up the potentially difficult terrain of expertise on one side and relative lack of expertise on the other, by providing these case studies. They are suggested as prompts rather than the last word. Informed debate is, after all, the fuel of curriculum development. And why Huh? Well, 'Huh?' may be John's first response when he walks into a Year 8 German class but, in fact, we chose 'Huh' as the title of our book as he is the Egyptian god of endlessness. As Claire Hill so eloquently comments in her chapter, “Curriculum development is an ongoing process; it’s not going to be finished, ever.” And we believe that 'Huh' captures a healthy and expansive way of considering curriculum conversations.

Open University Press ACTIVIST TEACHING PROFESSION
Book Synopsis"This is a thoughtful, provocative and important book. Clear, concise, articulate and pulling no punches, Judyth Sachs maps out an agenda for a new 'transformative professionalism' which celebrates the complexities of teacher' identities and work, and acknowledges the tensions between standards of accountability and autonomy. She argues persuasively for a reorientation of policy from managerial to a democratic and radical reconceptualisation of teacher education programmes and notions of teacher professionalism. Her text, richly supported by case studies of practice, will appeal to teachers and teacher educators worldwide who are committed to principles of active participation, trust and community." - Professor Chris W. After a brief review of the research background and of the project itself, successive chapters describe the specific practices which teachers found fruitful and the undTable of ContentsIntroduction: Why study this book? The source of the ideasHow teachers developed the ideas with usPutting the ideas into practiceLooking at practice more deeplyChanging yourselfManagement and supportThe end - and a beginningIndex
