Jane Katch writes with a spare, pure poetry as she tells the delightful, hilarious, and at times terribly sad stories of the adopted children in her class, moving us through a range of emotions and understandings. Guilford Publications Integrated MultiTiered Systems of Support

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMany schools have implemented academic response to intervention (RTI) and schoolwide positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) as separate initiatives. This book provides keys to making these programs more effective, seamless, efficient, and sustainable by combining them into a single multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). Steps and strategies are outlined for integrating data structures, practices, teams, and district systems. Contributing authors present detailed case examples of successful MTSS implementation in three states. In a large-size format, the book features 27 reproducible checklists and evaluation tools. Purchasers get access to a companion website where they can download and print the reproducible materials plus other helpful resources. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.Trade Review“If you want to improve the impact of your academic and behavioral strategies for all your students, then follow McIntosh and Goodman's expert guidance on using the MTSS framework and logic. This book does a superb job of addressing the 'why,' 'what,' 'how,' 'when,' and 'where' of aligning and integrating leadership teaming, data-based decision making, explicit academic and behavior instruction, universal screening, continuous progress monitoring, and evaluation and coaching. And, it provides the empirical support, self-assessments, and applied examples for making MTSS contextually relevant and doable for you and your students."--George Sugai, PhD, Professor and Carole J. Neag Endowed Chair, Neag School of Education, University of Connecticut "A 'must read' for those interested in learning how to construct, implement, evaluate, and sustain integrated three-tiered models of prevention. McIntosh and Goodman have produced an easy-to-access guide for developing data-driven systems to meet students’ academic and behavioral needs, including very practical information on systematic screening efforts."--Kathleen Lynne Lane, PhD, BCBA-D, Department of Special Education, University of Kansas "The publication of this volume has been eagerly awaited. McIntosh and Goodman provide the most comprehensive lens to date for integrating academic and behavior systems of support. They clearly articulate the critical features and attributes that support implementation and sustainability of an MTSS at both the district and building levels. The authors have succeeded in writing a very reader-friendly book, complete with practical examples and tools for moving teams at all stages of implementation forward. This is an essential practitioner’s handbook and should be required reading for all preservice educators."--Dawn Miller, PhD, SWIFT Center (Schoolwide Integrated Framework for Transformation), University of Kansas "At a time when educational systems are under constant financial strain, the ability to integrate systems in school districts is crucial. By using an MTSS, K-12 educators can become more efficient and effective. This book details how to work toward integrating current processes and support systems to facilitate student learning. I encourage school personnel who want to understand an integrated approach to educational systems to read this book."--Gustavo Balderas, DEd, Superintendent of Schools, Eugene School District, Oregon "Well written, understandable, informative, and relevant. McIntosh and Goodman have created a great resource that is useful for those just embarking on an MTSS journey as well as those who have been working toward an integrated MTSS for some time. Not only does this book provide guidance about how and why integration of academic RTI and PBIS is important, but it also gives us tools to help us all in our work."--Justyn Poulos,Assistant Director, Wisconsin RTI Center -Table of ContentsI. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co ,U.S. Planning, Writing, and Implementing IEPs: A

Book SynopsisWritten from the perspective of an educator with over 25 years of experience working with students receiving various levels of special education services, Planning, Writing, and Implementing an IEP: A Christian Approach goes far beyond completing paperwork and conducting meetings, and addresses the comprehensive nature of the IEP process. In addition, the publication approaches the IEP process from a Christian perspective, reminding the reader to look at each IEP as an opportunity to serve a family by providing hope and a vision for the student's education. The publication challenges administrators, service providers, and parents, to consider an IEP from a different perspective. This book reminds readers that IEP meetings need not be a time of conflict and controversy, and that writing the components of an IEP can become part of a plan for the student's future (Jeremiah 29:11), rather than a dreaded task to complete. The Bible is the most often referenced book. It is this perspective that makes this book unique.Table of Contents Preface Acknowledgments About the Author IEP: Documents & Details Essential for a Quality Individual Education Program Chapter 1. Book SynopsisAt an event honoring Daisy Bates as 1990's Distinguished Citizen then-governor Bill Clinton called her ""the most distinguished Arkansas citizen of all time."" Her classic account of the 1957 Little Rock School Crisis, ""The Long Shadow of Little Rock"", couldn't be found on most bookstore shelves in 1962 and was banned throughout the South. In 1988, after the University of Arkansas Press reprinted it, it won an American Book Award. On September 3, 1957, Gov. Orval Faubus called out the National Guard to surround all-white Central High School and prevent the entry of nine black students, challenging the Supreme Court's 1954 order to integrate all public schools. On September 25, Daisy Bates, an official of the NAACP in Arkansas, led the nine children into the school with the help of federal troops sent by President Eisenhower - the first time in eighty-one years that a president had dispatched troops to the South to protect the constitutional rights of black Americans. This new edition of Bates' own story about these historic events is being issued to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Little Rock School crisis in 2007.Trade ReviewThis is a book which I hope will be read by every American. It is simply told and easy to read, but not pleasant. - Eleanor Roosevelt, from the foreword to the first edition (1962) ""Daisy Bates' vivid memoir illuminates one of the key events of an historic freedom struggle.... Her story will serve as a source of inspiration for future participants in the long struggle for human freedom."" - From the afterword

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAustralian scholar Donna McDonald has achieved a successful career in social work policy focusing on disadvantage and disability, yet, until now, her work has never directly addressed the personal challenges she faced having been part of a generation of children in Australia and around the world who were born deaf, but assimilated into oral education programs in the 1950s and '60s. In The Art of Being Deaf, McDonald tells her story and describes the process of reconciling her deaf-self and her hearing persona. When she was five, McDonald was placed in an oral deaf school. There, she was trained to communicate only in spoken English. Her determination led to achievements that caused many to identify her as a "deaf girl that had made good." Yet, as McDonald describes in her memoir, despite her constant focus on fitting into the hearing world, she soon realized that she was closing-off an essential part of her identity-that of being deaf. Through the writing of the book, she comes to embrace that part of herself and to acknowledge that the art of being deaf has many crucial parallels to the art of life in general. This moving personal story will not only appeal to those who have shared similar experiences within the deaf community, but anyone who has struggled with disadvantages and questions of identity.Trade Review"There's a generational story to be told here that is important-McDonald was part of a 'between' generation of deaf kids/students around the globe (but especially in the UK, Australia, developed Europe, and US) who now had access to 'regular' schools but who were still struggling in the shadow-land between deaf schools/lives/identities and the public/regular schools." Book Synopsis'It was hard in the beginning; I didn't think I was going to like it' - Student. 'This ain't even a real school, man. This is for discipline' - Student. 'I want to go to college and become a paramedic' - Student. 'Know what you learn in this program? You learn to suck up' - student. 'The school district would not like what I'm doing here, but I think these kids need it' - History teacher. 'This is my real ministry' - Community liaison. These are only some of the voices in Law and Order and School, Shira Birnbaum's riveting study of an education and rehabilitation program for troubled teenagers in a Southern city. Locally acclaimed as one of the better programs of its kind in the region, "Academy" exemplifies a new kind of institution, providing transitional school services under contract with both educational and juvenile justice agencies. Birnbaum's narrative focuses on curriculum, teaching, behavior management, and the social organization and culture of the program, offering a close-up view of the everyday classroom interactions that frame student achievement and, ultimately, program outcomes. What do students learn? What do teachers teach? What educational and rehabilitative goals are embedded in official and unofficial policy? What processes inside and outside the building help or hinder the attainment of those goals? As educational and justice agencies look increasingly to private subcontractors to deliver an array of services and growing numbers of young people are channeled into non-traditional educational settings and correctional institutions, it is imperative that educators and the general public understand how these institutions work and what problems their students and staffs encounter. This on-the-ground examination of education within the juvenile justice system will open your eyes to how we educate some of our neediest children. Author note: Shira Birnbaum is an educational consultant working in New York and New Jersey.Trade Review"Shira Birnbaum's brilliant new book, Law and Order and School, offers an insider's look at an educational institution for troubled teenagers. It is a work of careful and thoughtful scholarship, yet its ethnographic approach makes it read like a novel as the students and teachers come alive and you see inside the 'Academy' with them. While the book's strength is its in-depth look at this institution, it provides a recognizably authentic picture of what is being faced throughout our nation, and how, in the best of our programs, with idealistic and mostly very competent teachers, we too often still fail our troubled youth. This should be required reading for anyone studying or working with the juvenile justice system and for all of us concerned with the problem." --Steven J. Klees, University of Maryland "Law and Order and School is well written and informs readers about an institution that most of us know nothing about. It is extremely rich in detail and includes many scenes and conversations that bring the 'Academy' to life. The stories of the students and teachers are presented respectfully. With the accelerating privatization of both the educational and penal systems, this book is especially important at this time." --Doreen J. Mattingly, Associate Professor of Women's Studies and Geography, San Diego State University "Law and Order and School is a gripping and compelling story. In this ethnographic study of the 'Academy,' Birnbaum lets the story tell itself, without hand-wringing or sermonizing, without stating the obvious, and without upstaging the material. This is in every respect a model of what good writing should be: carefully conceived, theoretically informed and rich in insight, yet unburdened by pretense or jargon. The result is both a beautifully rendered, and a heart-rending, story told in page-turning style." --Robert Lake, Center for Urban Policy Research, Rutgers UniversityTable of Contents1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs a result of the genocide in Darfur, tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee Sudan and seek refuge in overcrowded, desolate desert camps along the Chadian border. "Educating Darfur Refugees" is the unforgettable journal of a Jesuit priest who spent nine months in 2004 and 2005 working in three of those refugee camps. Patrick Samway's diaries, deeply informed by his perspective as a religious scholar but as engrossing as any page-turner, are an unflinching eyewitness account of one of the greatest tragedies of our time. Charged with the considerable task of setting up schools for refugee children, Samway recounts his experiences with scarce food and water, non-existent educational resources, and the remarkable people he encounters along the way. The life-changing story that unfolds, an engaged personal narrative capacious enough to embrace both George Bernanos and Walker Percy, is necessary reading for anyone concerned about Sudanese refugees and those who share their plight all over the world.

National Resource Center for The First Year Experience & Students in Transition From Disability to Diversity: College Success for

Book SynopsisColleges and universities are seeing increasing numbers of students with a range of disabilities enrolling in postsecondary education. Many of these disabilities are invisible and, despite their potential for negative impact on students’ academic and social adjustment, some students will choose not to identify as having a disability or request support. Approaching disability from the perspective of difference, the authors of this new volume offer guidance on creating more inclusive learning environments on campus so that all students—whether or not they have a recognized disability—have the opportunity to succeed. Strategies for supporting students with specific learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder or who display learning and behavioral characteristics associated with these profiles are described. A valuable resource for instructors, advisors, academic support personnel, and others who work directly with college students.
