    Book SynopsisWith the growing influence of discursive and narrative perspectives on organizing, organizational scholars are focusing increasing attention on the constitutive role that language and communication play in organizational processes. This view conceptualizes language and communication as bringing organization into being in every instant and is therefore inherently sympathetic to a process perspective. However, our understanding of the role of language in unfolding organizational processes and as a part of organizational action is still limited. This volume brings together empirical and/or conceptual contributions from leading scholars in organization and communication to develop understanding of language and communication as constitutive of work, and also analyze how language and communication actually work to achieve influence in the context of organizations. It aims to elucidate the role language, communication, and narrativity play as part of strategic and institutional work in and arTrade ReviewPerspectives on Process Organization Studies will be the definitive annual volume of theories and research that advance our understanding of process questions dealing with how things emerge, grow, develop, and terminate over time. I applaud Professors Ann Langley and Haridimos Tsoukas for launching this important book series, and encourage colleagues to submit their process research and subscribe to PROS. * Andrew H. Van de Ven, Vernon H. Heath Professor of Organizational Innovation and Change, University of Minnesota, USA *The recent decades witnessed conspicuous changes in organization theory: a slow but inexorable shift from the focus on structures to the focus on processes. The whirlwinds of the global economy made it clear that everything flows, even if change itself can become stable. While the interest in processes of organizing is not new, it is now acquiring a distinct presence, as more and more voices join in. A forum is therefore needed where such voices can speak to one another, and to the interested readers. The series Perspectives on Process Organization Studies will provide an excellent forum of that kind, both for those for whom a processual perspective is a matter of ontology, and those who see it as an epistemological choice. * Barbara Czarniawska, Professor of Management Studies, School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden *Table of ContentsPART I: LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION IN ORGANIZATIONS; PART II: PROCESS PERSPECTIVES

    Book SynopsisA much-cited and highly influential text by Alastair Pennycook, one of the world authorities in sociolinguistics, The Cultural Politics of English as an International Language explores the globalization of English by examining its colonial origins, its connections to linguistics and applied linguistics, and its relationships to the global spread of teaching practices. Nine chapters cover a wide range of key topics including: international politics colonial history critical pedagogy postcolonial literature. The book provides a critical understanding of the concept of the worldliness of English', or the idea that English can never be removed from the social, cultural, economic or political contexts in which it is used. • How We Read Now

    Oxford University Press Inc How We Read Now

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisAn engaging and authoritative guide to the impact of reading medium on learning, from a foremost expert in the field We face constant choices about how we read. Educators must select classroom materials. College students weigh their textbook options. Parents make decisions for their children. The digital revolution has transformed reading, and with the recent turn to remote learning, onscreen reading may seem like the only viable option. Yet selecting digital is often based on cost or convenience, not on educational evidence. Now more than ever it is imperative to understand how reading medium actually impacts learning--and what strategies we need in order to read effectively in all formats. In How We Read Now, Naomi Baron draws on a wealth of knowledge and research to explain important differences in the way we concentrate, understand, and remember across multiple formats. Mobilizing work from international scholarship along with findings from her own studies of reading practices, Baron addresses key challenges--from student complaints that print is boring to the hazards of digital reading for critical thinking. Rather than arguing for one format over another, she explains how we read and learn in different settings, shedding new light on the current state of reading. The book then crucially connects research insights to concrete applications, offering practical approaches for maximizing learning with print, digital text, audio, and video. Since screens and audio are now entrenched--and invaluable-platforms for reading, we need to rethink ways of helping readers at all stages use them more wisely. How We Read Now shows us how to do that.Trade ReviewBaron's work provides a weighted and critical description of printed and digital environments from an educational point of view, focusing on those factors of improvement that each of them entails. One of its main contributions is the introduction of audio and video analysis as complementary forms of reading that are becoming more and more important as the platforms for their use expand, and the services offered increase. * José Antonio Cordón, University of Salamanca, Escola de Llibreria *Beyond being eminently readable, How We Read Now is also inspiring in terms of design. Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty, and professionals; general readers. * P. Finley, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, CHOICE *A well-researched, accessible treatise on all the ways we experience and absorb words... Educating tomorrows generations is of urgent importance to all of us, and for that reason, How We Read Now is must reading. Baron does not prescribe particular reading platforms, but rather enables us to better assess all the possibilities... Baron's light, conversational style makes for enjoyable reading - whether in print or on a screen. * Bárbara Mujica, Washington Independent Review of Books *Table of ContentsForeword by Maryanne Wolf List of Tables and Figures Introduction: The New Great Debate in Reading Part I Sizing Up Reading What's at Stake? Book SynopsisInternational migration and the social diversity it creates constitute one of the key global challenges of the early 21st century. Language and communication barriers can compromise equitable access in diverse societies, and where socioeconomic disadvantage becomes entrenched, it poses risks to security, productivity and quality of life. Clearly this is an important issue, and migrants and their language choices are heavily politicized; though political and media debates often rely on anecdotal conjecture or are ill-informed.Life in a New Language examines the language learning and settlement experiences of 130 migrants to Australia from 34 different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America over a period of 20 years. Reusing data shared from six separate sociolinguistic ethnographies, the book illuminates participants'' lived experience of learning and communicating in a new language, finding work, and doing family. Additionally, participants'' experiences with racism and identity making in a new context are explored. The research uncovers significant hardship but also migrants'' courage and resilience. The book has implications for language service provision, migration policy, open science, and social justice movements.

    Book SynopsisAnita Pomerantz is one of the pioneers of Conversation Analysis (CA), a field that has grown from a small and marginalized subfield into a significant, international, multidisciplinary field of inquiry. CA now enjoys widespread acceptance and appreciation, thanks in large part to Pomerantz''s contributions.Asking and Telling in Conversation collects Pomerantz''s most influential articles across the span of her career, focusing on the complexities of asking and telling something to another person. The actions of asking and telling may seem straightforward, but speakers deal with a number of complexities when they ask and tell. Pomerantz''s work focuses on the ways in which the performances of asking and telling are shaped by, and shape, the identities of the participants, the activities in which they are engaged, what was said and done prior to the actions in question, and the anticipated reactions to their talk and action. Each of the volume''s nine chapters is framed by original pieces by Pomerantz which discuss the significance and contribution of the article to current studies in CA. In addition to the new introductions and closing commentary for each work, this book includes full introductory and concluding chapters that draw out the connections across the author''s work. Pomerantz also shares her reflections on preference organization, which she first analyzed in her foundational research nearly fifty years ago. Bringing together seminal works of CA with contemporary analysis in the field, this book sheds new light on important questions-and answers-in communication studies. A collection of work from a foremost scholar, Asking and Telling in Conversation is an invaluable resource for scholars and students of Conversation Analysis.Trade Reviewshowcases her remarkable contributions * Marat Shangxin Zheng, Language and Dialogue *CA is naturally developing, growing, changing, but the work of Anita Pomerantz is as good a reminder as any of the core historical strengths of CA, its rigour, its empirical focus, its concern with what happens in conversation in the here-and-now. • Language Policy and Political Economy

    Oxford University Press Language Policy and Political Economy

    Book SynopsisEnglish is the common denominator that unites the work presented in this volume; it provides a focal point to illustrate the ways in which a political economic approach can account for a range of phenomena in diverse settings in which a global language has attained a special status as (an often perceived) tool for socioeconomic mobility. The findings reveal the complex ways in which government leaders and policymakers, as well as communities and individuals in those communities, make decisions within a global economy about the languages that will be taught as subjects or used as media of instruction in schools. Whether or not the Straight for English policy that has become popular in various countries in southern Africa and elsewhere is a good or bad idea, in terms of improving school completion and literacy rates, English is often promoted as a social good with unquestioned instrumental value; yet access to quality English medium education in low-income countries is mostly restricted to those with sufficient economic means to pay for it. As the capitalist world-economy undergoes transformations, and assuming that translation technologies continue to improve, it is likely that the roles and relative importance that English as a global language has enjoyed over the past century will change significantly. Synchronic contextual analyses of English in various countries and regions are snapshots of a moving target with fuzzy boundaries; this is even more so the case when the object of analysis is lingua franca English, a fluid, contextually realized practice that may be described in situ, which is not stable and likely never will be. The degree to which English serves effectively as a lingua franca depends on who the interlocutors are, the situation, and the extent to which interlocutors'' interests and goals are mutually compatible and understood.Trade ReviewTom Ricento and the stellar cast of scholars he has assembled in this book achieve something extraordinary: they construct a story that people will still have to read decades later, on an object characterized paradoxically by extremely rapid and radical change. It is an intellectual and academic 'tour de force' which focuses on mechanisms and structures rather than on phenomena and anecdotes, and so easily transcends the level of here-and-now documentation. * Jan Blommaert, Tilburg University *In an era where language change and loss is often explained by reference to inevitable forces of 'culture' and 'globalization,' this important book brings us back home to core questions of economic power and political control. * Allan Luke, Queensland University of Technology *Language Policy and Political Economy is both timely and important, engaging with the debates that are central to current language policy research. I don't think anyone will be able to write about 'global English' again without seriously engaging with the analyses in this book. * James Tollefson, The University of Hong Kong *Ricento's book convinces the reader of the importance of the political economy perspective when analysing language policy in general * Christopher Houtkamp, Language Problems & Language Planning *Language Policy and Political Economy is superbly conceived and executed, rewarding readers as both a coherent collective and in individual essays. * Vaidehi Ramanathan, Sociolinguistics *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Language Policy and Political Economy ; Thomas Ricento ; Part I: Political Theory and Political Economy in Language Policy Research on English as a Global Language ; 1.     Book SynopsisThis edited collection provides research-informed guidance on how reflexivity may be practised in applied linguistics research. Specifically, we promote reflexivity as an essential hallmark of quality research and argue that doing reflexivity confers greater transparency, methodological rigour, depth, and trustworthiness to our scholarly inquiries.The collection features perspectives from different sub-fields of applied linguistics, including intercultural communication, language education, and multilingualism, and draws on data from a range of settings, including language cafÃs, classrooms, workplaces, and migration and displacement contexts. Each chapter follows a unified structure: theoretical background, context of the empirical study used as a backdrop for the chapter, an analysis of how reflexivity played out throughout the study, and conclusions which include takeaway points for other researchers.     Book SynopsisWe all have had the experience of being divided, of being in two minds'' about something - one part of us wants to do this, another wants to do that. Subpersonalities is the first book to do justice to the phenomenon as a normal feature of our psychological life. John Rowan argues that we all have a number of personalities that express themselves in different situations and that by recognising them we can come to understand ourselves better and improve our relationships with others. Anyone reading this book will run the risk of making quite new discoveries about themselves. In looking at where subpersonalities come from, John Rowan explores the work of psychologists and psychotherapists, from Jung and Freud onwards, and adds insights gained from his own work as a therapist and counsellor. He relates the journey of discovery that he himself undertook in search of his own subpersonalities. The result is a fascinating book that challenges our accepted view of ourselves and proTable of ContentsIntroduction; Part 1 What are Subpersonalities?; Chapter 1 Setting the Scene; Chapter 2 Subpersonalities in Everyday Life; Chapter 3 Beginning to Investigate; Part 2 Functions and Uses of Subpersonalities; Chapter 4 Subpersonalities in Psychotherapy; Chapter 5 Subpersonalities in Psychotherapy; Chapter 6 Subpersonalities in Psychotherapy; Part 3 The Explanations; Chapter 7 Development of Subpersonalities; Chapter 8 Other Origins of Subpersonalities; Chapter 9 Academic Research and Subpersonalities; Chapter 10 Objections to Subpersonalities and Some Replies; Part 4 The Potential; Chapter 11 Whither Subpersonalities?; Chapter 12 Beyond the Subpersonalities;

    Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1972, this study is dedicated to the surviving speakers of the Dyirbal, Giramay and Mamu dialects. For more than ten thousand years they lived in harmony with each other and with their environment. Over one hundred years ago many of them were shot and poisoned by European invaders. Those allowed to survive have been barely tolerated tenants on their own lands, and have had their beliefs, habits and language help up to ridicule and scorn. In the last decade they have seen their remaining forests taken and cleared by an American company, with the destruction of sites whose remembered antiquity is many thousands of years older than the furthest event in the shallow history of their desecrators. The survivors of the three tribes have stood up to these diversities with dignity and humour. They continue to look forward to the day when they may again be allowed to live in peaceful possession of some of their own lands, and may be accorded a respect that they have been Table of ContentsPreface; 1. Book SynopsisTrade Review...the book covers a wide scope of issues from economics to politics, from sociology to linguistics, from environmentalism to biology and so forth... It also goes without saying that nature and culture and, generally speaking, all forms of life are inseparably interwoven and that language, on the one hand, also manipulates and even controls it to a certain extent. It is a merit of the book that it makes the readership aware not only of that interdependence but also of the global threat, of the most urgent tasks resulting from it as well as of the role of language therein... It attempts to break out of the limits of the dictionary-ontology paradigm and set British English dictionary-making and research against a broader background of socio-cultural observations, thus relating the development of English lexicography to changes in English, accomplishments in English linguistics, social and cultural progress, and advances in science and technology.It unfolds a vivid, coherent and complete picture of how English dictionary-making develops from its archetype to the prescriptive, the historical, the descriptive and finally to the cognitive model, how it interrelates to the course of the development of a nation''s culture and the historical growth of its lexicographical culture, as well as how EnTable of ContentsIntroductionChapter One The Latin roots in English dictionaries and the inception of English lexicographical cultureChapter Two The early development of English bilingual lexicography and its deviation from Latin traditionsChapter Three The bourgeoning of English monolingual dictionary paradigm and the extension of bilingual dictionary traditions in the 17th century Chapter Four The termination of hard-word traditions in English lexicography and its pursuit of prescriptivismChapter Five The European philological traditions and the creation of the diachronic dictionary paradigm in the 19th century Chapter Six The transformation of lexicographical traditions and the prosperity of British English lexicographyChapter Seven English lexicography–accomplishments, developments and prospects Major References Major referenced websitesIndex of Lexicographers

    Book SynopsisLoanwords and Japanese Identity: Inundating or Absorbed? provides an in-depth examination of public discussions on lexical borrowing in the Japanese language. The main objective of this book is to explore the relationship between language and identity through an analysis of public attitudes towards foreign loanwords in contemporary Japanese society. In particular, the book uncovers the process by which language is conceived of as a symbol of national identity by examining an animated newspaper controversy over the use of foreign loanwords. The book concludes that the fierce debate over the use of loanwords can be understood as a particular manifestation of the ongoing (re-)negotiation of Japanese national identity.This book will appeal to scholars and students in sociolinguistics, translation studies, and discourse analysis, while its cultural and geographic focus will attract readers in Japanese studies and East Asian studies.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Loanwords in Japan1.1 Western Loanwords and Japan Today1.2 What are Gairaigo and Katakanago? 1.3 Gairaigo Controversies1.4 Key Questions and Focal PointsChapter 2: For or Against?2.1 Language and Identity2.2: Public Opinions2.3: Advantages and Disadvantages2.4: Why the Polemic? 2.5: Gairaigo and Nihongo Dichotomy2.6: Nihongo and KokugoChapter 3: Inundating or Absorbed?3.1: Textual Data3.2: Time Frame3.3: Method of Analysis3.4: Recurrent Verbs3.5: ImplicationsChapter 4: Japanese or Foreign?4.1: Nihongo, the Japanese language, and Gairaigo, Loanwords4.2: Analysis4.3: SummaryChapter 5: What Kind of Loanwords?5.1: Loanwords as ‘Outside Within’5.2: Metaphors5.3: Contrasts5.4: Evolution of Japanese IdentitiesChapter 6: Loanwords and Identity in the Age of Diversity6.1: French Discourse on Loanwords6.2: Comparative Observations6.3: Use of Katakana for Japanese Loanwords Abroad6.4: From the ‘Outside Within’ to the ‘New Wild’
