Steyler Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH Forgive Us Our Sins: Confession in Late Ming and
Book SynopsisConfession in early modern Europe has been the subject of several studies. But what happened to the confessional practice when it moved to other cultures? This is the major research question of the present book as applied to late Ming and early Qing China. The origin of this research can be traced back to the Handbook of Christianity in China: Volume One (635-1800) (Leiden 2000) compiled by researchers of the K.U. Leuven, in collaboration with an international team of circa twenty scholars. As a reference work, the Handbook comprehensively presents many different aspects of Christianity in China, including sciences, arts and crafts. But there was one major absentee: ritual, which is often considered essential for understanding China. A first step in filling this gap was the organisation of an international workshop on Chinese and Christian Rituality in Late Imperial China (Leuven, June 2004). The present volume includes the revised contributions by Eugenio Menegon and Erik ZÃrcher and a reworked version of an article by Liam Brockey as well as the edition of the primary source he used for his article, a confessional manual composed by Jose Monteiro S.J. (1646-1720). These articles portray from different angles one of the sacramental rituals, viz. that of confession.

Steyler Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH On the School of Names in Ancient China
Book SynopsisThe present study on ancient Chinese philosophy invites us to meet a challenging task in philosophical understanding. The so-called School of Names (mingjia åå) is a label for a diverse group of thinkers in the Warring States period (479â221 B.C.) that has sometimes been accused of dabbling in flippant linguistic and conceptual puzzles, paradoxes, or sophistries. Bernard Solomon analyzes the works of its two main representatives, namely Huizi æƒå (Master Hui, or Hui Shi æƒæ, 380â305 B.C.?) and Gongsun Long ååé (b. 380 B.C.?).The Chapter One deals with the ten paradoxes of Huizi as recorded in the Zhuangzi 莊å. Chapters Two to Six are devoted to five texts attributed to Gongsun Long that have been called cryptic or even a mixture of banality and nonsense. Among them is also found the White-Horse Dialogue with its famous dictum A white horse is not a horse. The aim of Solomonâs investigation is the discovery of the rules of language games in the School of Names and of the key to solve their linguistic and conceptual puzzles and paradoxes. His analysis shows in all the texts he interprets an evidence of an interest in language qua language (p. 12), which is unique for Chinese thought in the classical era.Bernard S. Solomon holds a Ph.D. in Far Eastern Languages of Harvard University (1952) and was a long-time Professor of Chinese in the Department of Classical and Oriental Languages at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY).

Steyler Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH Das Fremde im eigenen Lande: Zur Historiographie
Book SynopsisShortlisted in the German Language Edition category of the ICAS book prize 2017.Christianity was initially a âœforeign religionâ in China, nevertheless it took roots over the course of several centuries through the process of evangelisation, negotiation, conversion, and contextualization. Therefore, it constitutes a rather complex cultural phenomenon in China. It has been, and still is, viewed from several perspectives and embedded into various, sometimes mutually exclusive, master narratives of Chinese history, e.g., Cultural exchanges between China and the West, Imperialism in China, Modernisation of China and Chinese religious history. Each of these narratives entails a different evaluation of the history of Christianity in China. As this study in German points out, changes in this field of research are an apt indicator for shifts in the conception of national and cultural identity/alterity in Mainland China. They also reflect different perceptions of the relationship between Christianity/Christian groups and Chinese culture/non-Christian population as well as between China and the West.Based on an analysis of discourses on the historiography of Christianity in China, the author demonstrates the interplay of historical research with Mainland Chinese debates on meta-topics such as paths of modernisations and identity. The focus of this research is on the contributions of Liang Qichao (1873â1929), Hu Shi (1891â1962), and Chen Yuans (1880â1971) for the early 20th century. For the late 20th and 21st century relevant articles from the leading historical journals Jindaishi yanjiu (Modern Chinese History Studies), Lishi yanjiu (Historical Reserarch) and Zhongguoshi yanjiu (Studies in Chinese History) are discussed. In the evaluation of these articles a special emphasis is put on the influence of the historian Zhang Kaiyuan as a pioneer of a new research perspective.

Steyler Verlagsbuchhandlung GmbH P. Joachim Bouvet S.J.

Editon Synapse Foundations of Japanese Feminism (ES 4-vol. set)
Book SynopsisThe influence of Western ideas and know-how on the modernization of Japan remains one of the most important subjects in Japanese Studies; indeed, today’s Japan cannot be understood without a comprehension of the impact of thought and practice from the West. With regard to the history of women in Japan, Western ideas were especially central since the women’s movement in Japan was founded on the translation of Western books into Japanese, a process that began in Meiji times and continued into the early Showa era. During this period, along with classical texts by such authors as J. S. Mill and Herbert Spencer, some lesser books on the subject were also translated and published in Japanese. This new series from Edition Synapse—now available outside Japan from Routledge—collects some of those texts, many of which have been forgotten, but which nonetheless played important roles in the foundation of Japanese feminism. The second and the final collection includes facsimile reprints of the first editions of the English works which influenced the Japanese women’s movement in the early Showa era by authors, including, among others, Jessica Smith, Bernard Shaw, and Sylvia Pankhurst.

Book SynopsisSince its foundation, Edition Synapse has specialized in the publication of primary-source materials relating to the history of the Anglo-Japanese relationship and has provided the academic market with nineteenth-century English books on Japan, reprinted in facsimile and including many visual sources, such as illustrations and photographs. Continuing the tradition, this new Edition Synapse series—now available outside Japan from Routledge—collects publications by Christian missionary women, both missionary wives and female missionaries, who worked in Japan from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Many Christian missionaries came to Japan after the Meiji restoration in 1868. Although they were not able to convert many Japanese, they played a significant role in the rapid Westernization of Japan. In particular, women missionaries took leading roles in activities relating to local women and children in Japan, and they left an important and indelible mark in the history of education of Japanese women and children. This first collection of the series includes twelve works on Japan by British women in the missions. Authors of those books observed rapid changes in Japanese society and not only reported the facts, but also gave detailed analyses of the background to them. Their observations illustrate these British women’s great curiosity, genuine concern for the local society, and their positive attitude in trying to comprehend a very different culture. The contents covered by each book are broad, most of them refer not only to the missionary activities, but try to introduce Japan in general, as well as the historical and religious background, and the daily life of ordinary people and the situation of Japanese women.

Book Synopsis‘The World in Miniature’ was a popular series of illustrated, pocket-sized books. The series was originally produced by Rudolph Ackermann, a renowned London bookseller and publisher in the early nineteenth century. The series continued for several years from its launch in 1821 and was completed in 43 volumes. The series introduced a Western readership to the manners, character, customs, fashion, history, religion etc. of peoples from distant lands. This collection includes a facsimile reprint of seven volumes covering Asiatic and Pacific countries: Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hawaii, the Micronesian/Polynesian islands, and New Zealand.Frederic Shoberl, the editor and author of the original series, compiled his volumes by collecting information from the latest contemporary travel writing. He intended to provide objective views of, and facts on, the cultures of the countries covered by the series. However, the (mis)representations in each book often reflected exotic Western dreams of ‘the East’. Indeed, the distorted images of ‘undeveloped’ societies in some of the colour plates are a rich source of visual information for those studying the history of Orientalism.Table of ContentsVolume 1 Japan: containing illustrations of the character, manners, customs, religion, dress, amusements, commerce, agriculture, etc. of the people of that empire (The world in miniature / edited by Frederic Shoberl) Printed for R. Editon Synapse Iseki: Strype’s ‘Survey of London’ (3-vol. ):
Book SynopsisFrom the Preface by Tetsuya Iseki:A Survey of London was originally published by John Stow (c. 1525–1605) in 1598. Stow was a chronicler and antiquary who edited literary works and archaeological texts (his first publication was Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, newly edited in 1561). In 1603 Stow published a new edition with corrections and additions, and it achieved immediate popular success. Even after his death, the work was reprinted in 1618 (Anthony Munday’s new edition), and again in 1633, but then disappeared from print until the end of the century. (The 1603 edition which was re-edited by C. L. Kingsford was issued by Oxford University Press in 1908, and later reprinted as the facsimile edition in 2000.)After the Great Fire of 1666, the state of London depicted and recorded in Stow’s Survey was greatly transformed. In 1694 Richard Blome (who published a new edition of William Camden’s Britannia) made an attempt to publish his new edition of Stow’s Survey with maps and many additions to describe the rebuilding of London after the Fire, but this was not successful. In 1702 John Strype (1643–1737), who had already achieved fame as an editor of historical and biographical documents, started editing Blome’s abortive work and created a new edition to answer the need for a current version of Stow’s Survey. Strype was said to have completed his edition (in two folio volumes) by November 1707, while a similar, rival book, A New View of London by Edward Hatton, was going to be published the following year. The booksellers gave up Strype’s Survey because Hatton’s publication was a smaller and cheaper edition. As it turned out, however, Hatton’s View of London could not satisfy the demand for a more scholarly updated edition of Stow’s Survey, and Strype’s project was revived in 1716 and finally published in December 1720.Strype’s Survey of London is basically an enlarged edition of Stow’s Survey, but the main body of the text and the maps are essentially taken from Blome’s 1694 edition. A mere reading of Strype’s Survey will reinforce the claim that the work is full of information about the late Stuart capital: the economics, politics, religion, architecture, and moral life of his day. Maps and plates of Strype’s Survey retain vivid visual details and, more than any other previous attempts, successfully remap the prosperous state of London. Pre-Fire maps were pictorial bird’s-eye views, in which buildings and landmarks are privileged over topographical accuracy, but alleys and yards are often obscured. The two-dimensional maps were published by John Ogilby and William Morgan after the fire in 1677. A large number of illustrations in Strype’s new edition show the details of the capital’s parishes and wards, including important historical buildings within and without the City both in two dimensions and bird’s-eye views.Strype’s Survey of London was priced at six guineas, and some 700 copies were published. Now the original is rarely found and the condition of the copies in the British Library or the ones in some other big libraries are not sound enough for reprint use. The present reprint is from my personal unspoiled copy of the 1720 edition. All texts and visual images derive from this copy. The work was originally published in two volumes: Volume 1 contains Books 1–3 and Volume 2 contains Books 4–6, plus appendices. This reprinted edition consists of three volumes: Volume 1 (Books 1, 2), Volume 2 (Books 3, 4), and Volume 3 (Books 5, 6). The texts are in the original fount and all illustrations and maps are inserted as foldouts.Table of ContentsA Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster: Containing the Original, Antiquity, Increase, Modern Estate and Government of those Cities … now lastly corrected, by John STOW, Improved and very much Enlarged by JOHN STRYPE, In Six Books + Appendix + Index + 70 Engraved Maps and PlatesLondon: Printed for A. Editon Synapse Women and Employment in Nineteenth- to Early
Book SynopsisThe Industrial Revolution in Britain from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century had profound effects on social and economic conditions; the working conditions of women were not an exception. Trade for women which had been rather confined to a small area such as nurses or governesses changed and British society began to permit more opportunities for women to take jobs in trades which used to be dominated by male workers. They included not only the manual labour, but also the professions, such as medicine. We often see those women workers in Victorian novels, and authors like Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell and others treated the issue of the working conditions or vocational education of women as important topics for their works, and the subject is now being widely studied by literary scholars as well as historian on Victorian society. This set of facsimile reprints includes eleven key contemporary publications which cover a wide range of the issues of women and trade in nineteenth-century England from various different perspectives. A pamphlet by Josephine Butler and a collection of essays by Frances Cobb, James Stuart, and George Butler, handbooks and educational books for women looking for jobs, official reports and statistics etc. are collected here, as well as a rare guidebook for young women and men published by The Apprenticeship and Skilled Employment Association in the early twentieth century. All together, it represents a very useful primary source of information for scholars on Victorian social history, culture, and literature.

Book SynopsisBarbara M. Benedict draws on the texts of the early modern period to discover the era's attitudes toward curiosity, a trait which was often depicted as an unsavoury form of transgression or cultural ambition.Trade Review"Robinson Crusoe told us that his head was always filled 'with rembling Thoughts.' That is how he got into such trouble, but it is also the way he survived. Rambling thoughts, as Benedict shows in this exuberant study, were at the center of English literary and cultural experience from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Transgressive, uncontrollable, hopelessly vulgar and at the same time exalted and ennobling, the passion of curiosity was the key that unlocked the sensibility of modernity in its great formative age." - Stephen Greenblatt, author of Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World "Benedict assembles her own gorgeous literary curiosity cabinet crammed with excerpts from novels, poems, journalism, travel narratives, trial transcripts and pornography.... The book is teeming with big questions and fine distinctions." - Ian Sansom, The Guardian "Pithy and wide-ranging.... This study provides a fresh new lens through which to reinvestigate the whole of early modern English literature." - Library Journal

From colonial times to the present day, Americans have always had a deep-rooted belief in the 'fresh-start' philosophy, explored in this work.Trade Review"Jasper's thesis... is strong and tantalizing. He does not restrict himself to a single discipline or line of argument, but dazzles readers with a stunning combination of literary critique, cultural analysis and economic estimation." - Publishers Weekly "Jasper travels across the American psyche to explore our unique infatuation with movement and personal reinvention.... To the author, this undergirds the cult of individualism as well as conservative, antigovernment politics in America.... The fluidity contributes to the dynamism of U.S. society but ensures a weak sense of community.... Restless Nation is an engaging essay on why we move so much." - Library Journal
