Taylor & Francis Linked Data for Digital Humanities
Book SynopsisLinked Data for Digital Humanities provides insights into how digital technologies can enrich and diversify humanities scholarship and make it pioneering in the digital age.Written in non-specialist language, the book illustrates how information is captured, published, represented, accessed, and interpreted using computational systems and, in doing so, shows how technologies actively shape the way we understand what we encounter. Focusing as it does on underlying Web architecture and projects accessible online, the book has an inherently international focus. The interdisciplinary case study examples include bibliographic data from works published in England between 1470 and 1700; literature from ancient Iraq; jazz performances, predominantly from the USA in the 1930s; and even reach as far as an alien, fictional future. Whilst these case study examples span vast spatio-temporal distances, they all share a common thread in the use of the Linked Data information publication paradigm. Using existing computer science methods, as well as processes such as ontology development and database design, the book also includes reflections on practical considerations and offers advice about how to take institutional policies, socio-cultural sensitivities, and economic models into consideration when implementing Linked Data projects.Linked Data for Digital Humanities discusses technological issues in the context of Humanities scholarship, bridging disciplines and enabling informed conversations across disciplinary boundaries. It will be of interest to humanities scholars, computer and data scientists, and library and information scientists.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Human Factors and Ergonomics in Practice
Book SynopsisThis edited book concerns the real practice of human factors and ergonomics (HF/E), conveying the perspectives and experiences of practitioners and other stakeholders in a variety of industrial sectors, organisational settings and working contexts. The book blends literature on the nature of practice with diverse and eclectic reflections from experience in a range of contexts, from healthcare to agriculture. It explores what helps and what hinders the achievement of the core goals of HF/E: improved system performance and human wellbeing. The book should be of interest to current HF/E practitioners, future HF/E practitioners, allied practitioners, HF/E advocates and ambassadors, researchers, policy makers and regulators, and clients of HF/E services and products.Trade Review"For those who are already working in human factors and ergonomics this book is of major significance. Not only does it synthesise the diverse aspects of this complex issue, it genuinely adds new knowledge in conceptualising and mapping the human factors terrain in a way that provides insight and adds practical value. For those unfamiliar with the territory who may be both enticed and somewhat confused by the vocabulary, this book provides an accessible and balanced account of the subject, shining a bright light on a subject that is much misunderstood. Thirty-one chapters, authored by a tour de force of experts, provide the reader with a set of books within a book; in particular, as it explores human factors and ergonomics across different domains. For anyone who is interested in using their human factors qualifications in the healthcare domain, the book is worth buying simply for the chapter on human factors and ergonomics in healthcare by Ken Catchpole and Shelly Jeffcott.—Dr Suzette Woodward, NHS Litigation Authority, UK"I'll admit I'm slightly biased, as I wrote the Foreword. However, I agreed to write the Foreword because I believe this book fills a unique space. It's an insight into the real, and often messy and challenging world of human factors/ergonomics in practice. It's doesn't just contain small tantalising snippets from the real world, it contains thorough reviews and insight that each industry can learn from. Every industry is on a journey to be better and safer at what it does, each one is at a different stage of that journey and this book has been a great help to me in understanding "how we're doing" and what we could be doing next. An eye opener."—Martin Bromiley OBE, Airline Captain and Chair of Clinical Human Factors Group, UK"I liked this book. It fits well with much of my experience and earlier work for IEA on university EHF courses and on professional EHF competencies - I was chair of the IEA executive committee for ergonomics education and professional certification. It also contains some very useful insights that I can use for my undergraduate and postgraduate courses (example: comments about professional aspects of EHF, definitions and history of EFH). The chapters on specific industries will also be very useful introductions for some of my EHF research students. I would definitely use the book as a prescribed text for my 128.804 course: Ergonomics professional practice."— Stephen Legg, Massey University, New Zealand"The editor’s note the book focuses on the practise of HF/E as a craft (as distinct from the science/engineering sides), and there is much useful discussion on how HF/E practitioners can best organise themselves to be effective, personally and collectively.I’ve always found HF/E practitioners to be an unusually reflective bunch who always provide useful and sometimes profound insights into the nature of work. This book simply reinforces that experience."—SafeGuard, January/February Issue 2018"For those who are already working in human factors and ergonomics this book is of major significance. Taylor & Francis Job Shop Lean
Book SynopsisIn the 1950âs, the design and implementation of the Toyota Production System (TPS) within Toyota had begun. In the 1960âs, Group Technology (GT) and Cellular Manufacturing (CM) were used by Serck Audco Valves, a high-mix low-volume (HMLV) manufacturer in the United Kingdom, to guide enterprise-wide transformation. In 1996, the publication of the book Lean Thinking introduced the entire world to Lean. Job Shop Lean integrates Lean with GT and CM by using the five Principles of Lean to guide its implementation: (1) identify value, (2) map the value stream, (3) create flow, (4) establish pull, and (5) seek perfection. Unfortunately, the tools typically used to implement the Principles of Lean are incapable of solving the three Industrial Engineering problems that HMLV manufacturers face when implementing Lean: (1) finding the product families in a product mix with hundreds of different products, (2) designing a flexible factory layout that fits hundreds of different product routings, and (3) scheduling a multi-product multi-machine production system subject to finite capacity constraints.Based on the Authorâs 20+ years of learning, teaching, researching, and implementing Job Shop Lean since 1999, this book Describes the concepts, tools, software, implementation methodology, and barriers to successful implementation of Lean in HMLV production systems Utilizes Production Flow Analysis instead of Value Stream Mapping to eliminate waste in different levels of any HMLV manufacturing enterprise Solves the three Industrial Engineering problems that were mentioned earlier using software like PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit), Sgetti and Schedlyzer Explains how the one-at-a-time implementation of manufacturing cells constitutes a long-term strategy for Continuous Improvement Explains how product families and manufacturing cells are the basis for implementing flexible automation, machine monitoring, virtual cells, Manufacturing Execution Systems, and other elements of Industry 4.0 Teaches a new method, Value Network Mapping, to visualize large multi-product multi-machine production systems whose Value Streams share many processes Includes real success stories of Job Shop Lean implementation in a variety of production systems such as a forge shop, a machine shop, a fabrication facility and a shipping department Encourages any HMLV manufacturer planning to implement Job Shop Lean to leverage the co-curricular and extracurricular programs of an Industrial Engineering department Table of ContentsForeword. Taylor & Francis Inc Value Stream Management: Eight Steps to Planning,
Book SynopsisThe Value Stream Management System simplifies the planning process for lean implementation, ensuring quick deployment and greater success. It links the metrics and reporting required by management with the lean tools needed on the manufacturing floor. The central feature of this illustrative and engaging book is the value stream management storyboard, a tool representing an eight-step process for lean implementation. The storyboard brings together people, tools, metrics, and reporting into one visual document. The authors stress the importance of reaching beyond single-point kaizens to ensure a sustainable lean implementation process. Many people use the value stream map as an individual tool, but not within the context of a proven overall system. Value Stream Management: Eight Steps to Planning, Mapping, and Sustaining Lean Improvements shows you how to use mapping as part of a complete system for lean implementation. The final outcome of Value Stream Management is the creation of a complete, visual plan for lean transformation - and the mastery of the skills required to implement that plan. Instead of just using Toyota Production System Tools, the authors encourage you to create your own lean production system. Value Stream Management will help you to complete your process and sustain it! Along with this book you receive downloadable resources containing a lean assessment tool, a storyboard template, useful charts, a team charter, forms, reports, and worksheets. Trade Review"In my opinion, the format is exceptional for use in training. The format is also excellent for readers such as busy managers/executives who are typically overloaded with material they need to read. It is a quick read or can be quickly scanned for core content by reading bullet statements, boxed-in highlighted text, etc. I'm pleased to see that despite the unique format, the book/manual doesn't dilute or leave out content that is critical lean theory. You can tell this book is written by practitioners who have actually done it." — Bob Angeli, Vice President of Operations, IdraPrince, June 2004Table of ContentsOverview: Value Stream Management Introduction: The Value Stream Management Process Step 1: Commit to Lean Step 2: Choose the Value Stream Step 3: Learn about Lean Step 4: Map the Current State Step 5: Identify Lean Metrics Step 6: Map the Future State Step 7: Create Kaizen Plans Step 8: Implement Kaizen Plans Glossary References Index Bonus CD

Taylor & Francis Inc The Basics of FMEA
Book SynopsisDemonstrates How To Perform FMEAs Step-by-StepOriginally designed to address safety concerns, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is now used throughout the industry to prevent a wide range of process and product problems. Useful in both product design and manufacturing, FMEA can identify improvements early when product and process changes are relatively easy and inexpensive to make. Updated to include changes reflected in ISO/TX-16949:2002 standards and 2008 AIAG guidelines, The Basics of FMEA, Second Edition continues to provide the expert advice needed to help shorten the learning curve for FMEA teams to conduct effective and efficient FMEAs, even if it is their very first one. Includes Ready-to-Use Worksheet TemplatesUsing a manufacturing case study, readers learn step-by-step how to use FMEAs to assess, evaluate, and prioritize areas of risk, and then to implement the actions needed to reduce risks to an acceptable level. It shows the steps needed to ferret out potential problems and prevent making inferior products that could endanger public and worker safety and compromise profits as well as the future of all stakeholders. Although engineers have typically analyzed processes and products for potential failures, the FMEA process standardizes the approach and establishes a common language that nontechnical as well as technical employees can use at all levels. Unlike other improvement tools, FMEA does not require complicated statistics. However, they require a full commitment to quality and a willingness to take a team approach that involves all stakeholders.Table of ContentsWhat Is an FMEA? What Is the Purpose of an FMEA? Taylor & Francis Inc Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to
Book SynopsisThere are some very good books available that explain the Lean Manufacturing theory and touch on implementing its techniques. However, you cannot learn "how to be" lean from merely reading the theory. And to be successful in the real-work environment you need a clear comprehension of how lean techniques work, rather than just a remote understanding of what they are. You need to know what does and does not work in different situations. And you need the benefit of practical experience in their implementation.Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them gives you the benefit of author and practitioner William Feld's 15 years of hands-on experience - and the lessons he's learned. Feld provides insight into the appropriate use of assessment, analysis, design, and, most importantly, deployment of a successful lean manufacturing program. Packed with practical advice and tips but not bogged down in theory, this book covers how, why, when, and what to do while implementing lean manufacturing. It equips you with the tools and techniques you need along with an understanding of how and why they work. Feld explores why an integrated approach is so much more beneficial in securing sustained improvement. He focuses on the interdependency of the Five Primary Elements: organization, metrics, logistics, manufacturing flow, and process control. He describes a proven, applied approach to creating a lean program using these elements. To keep up globally, and even locally, your manufacturing operation must be responsive, flexible, predictable, and consistent. You must continually improve manufacturing operations and cultivate a self directed work force driven by output based, customer performance criteria. By applying what you learn from Lean Manufacturing: Tools, Techniques, and How to Use Them you can build a workforce - and an organization - with the capacity to satisfy world class expectations now and into the future.Table of ContentsDescription of Lean Manufacturing.
