Book SynopsisOriginally emanating from presentations at an international conference, this text brings together research and practice development from three perspectives: practice, management and education. Within these three sections the book presents a series of chapters written mainly by practitioners, but some in collaboration with academics. At the end of each section there is a commentary by a practitioner, manager or researcher, which aims to offer a helpful critique on the papers in their section, guiding the reader to consider other areas of research and practice development. At a time when practitioners are being called to produce and use evidence in their practice, this book should offer a valuable contribution to that evidence base.Table of ContentsForeword Fiona Smith. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis text describes the development of augmentative and alternative communication. The focus is not on disabilities, although the atypical developmental paths to language described in this book are caused by a variety of disabilities, but on the developmental achievements of children using augmentative and alternative communication systems. This book is a first attempt to look at the achievements of children using alternative language forms from a broad developmental perspective and discuss how their semantic, grammatical and pragmatic development is promoted through social interactions, both planned and incidental in nature, that take place in particular sociocultural circumstances. The authors use small group data and dialogues to show how the children use grammatical structures and strategies to convey meaning and solve communicative challenges. The overall aim of the book is to inspire a shift towards a developmental understanding of augmentative and alternative communication in both research and clinical practice, leading to new knowledge and a better basis for intervention practices, and thereby to improved social and societal participation for children using augmentative and alternative communication.Table of ContentsThe Development of Alternative Language Forms. Book SynopsisThere have been important developments in the study and treatment of selective mutism during the ten years since the first edition of this book was published. Understanding of the subject has improved more dramatically than in any period since the phenomenon of children who talk readily in some situations but not in others was first recognised over a century ago. The second edition of this practical book reports recent developments in medication and combined therapies. New findings on the links between social anxiety, biological and genetic factors and selective mutism are described. At the same time the authors remain committed to understanding this pattern of behaviour in its full social context in family and community and to employing behavioural approaches to intervention alongside other methods. This is the fullest and most authoritative book-length account of selective mutism in print.Trade Review"...I thoroughly recommend this book...a solid and important contribution to the literature...an essential resource..." Book SynopsisThis book reviews published research concerning outcomes for deaf children with cochlear implants. The publications selected for review meet certain criteria - they were all published in English, they were published since 1994, and the number of children included in each study was at least 12. Advances in cochlear implantation that affect outcomes are also discussed. The book offers critical summaries of relevant papers and an account of the conclusions of the research to date, highlights topics that have received less attention and suggests a framework for considering outcomes. It evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of current research with suggestion for possible future developments. This book will be of interest to all professionals and researchers concerned with deaf children, to parents of deaf children and to purchasers of healthcare services.Table of ContentsAcknowledgement. Book SynopsisThe term Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is used to describe a group of children who have difficulty. with tasks involving movement such that it interferes with their daily living or academic progress. As with other developmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, DCD is now a prominent concern of both researchers and practitioners. This text is aimed at both researchers and professionals who work in a practical manner with the condition and includes professionals in health, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, health visitors, paediatricians, and - in the educational field - teachers and others who are in daily contact with the children - their parents. The essence of the text is that work with children should be guided by research evidence driving the clinical practice which in turn raisies more questions for research. The authors in this text have both experience in research and are engaged in the day-to-day clinical work with children and bring both of these to bear in the chapters they have written.Trade Review"...a fascinating collection of current thoughts... a very useful reference for those professionals working with DCD." • Developmental Speech Disorders

John Wiley & Sons Inc Developmental Speech Disorders

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practical book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques. A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children' s problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development. Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children' s language development. Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy. To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write.Table of ContentsPart 1. Out of stock

Book Synopsis"Making and Breaking Children's Lives" examines how children are hurt in modern society. We hear about the effects of early abandonment, abuse and lack of attachment, but find that children's experiences are sanitised through medical diagnoses and frequently the 'help' offered is prescription drugs. In this challenging book a plurality of voices returns to one consistent theme - the importance of psychosocial context, which become increasingly dismissed as being irrelevant in the rush to label and prescribe. However, there is hope - the final section describes inspiring examples of how services and communities can be developed to give children and their families a chance to prosper - evidence that there is nothing inevitable about the breaking of children's lives.Trade ReviewMore and more children are being caught up in the mental health system. One sign of this is the increased use in the UK of the diagnosis Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD ) - Another is the widespread prescribing of the stimulant Ritalin as a treatment. Making and Breaking Children's Lives confronts this situation head on, offering a robust critique and advocating a holistic approach to children's problems where psychosocial context is given greater prominence. Peter Campbell, Openmind (UK) March/April 2006. This is a timely, and extremely relevant publication. Currently there is a lot of earnest activity involved in organising, reorganising and improving services to children - This collection draws our attention to some of the most pressing issues. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No. 152 Crying as a Sign, a Symptom and a Signal brings the reader up to date on new evidence concerning the developmental and clinical significance of infant crying in the first few months and years of life. Initially studied as a sign of disease, crying is now being understood not only as a sign, but also as a symptom of problematic functioning in early development. We now know much more about normative patterns of development of infant crying and how they may be manifest in a variety of clinical settings (emergency room complaint, painful procedures, colic, temper tantrums, non-verbal and mentally challenged infants). This has brought about a new conceptualization of the significance of early infant crying which an international team of experts describe and examine. In this authoritative clinical text, both historical and methodological perspectives are brought to a multidisciplinary synopsis of the new understanding of this infant behavior.Trade Review'... up-to-date information on the latest research on crying' Scandinavian Journal of Behaviour Therapy'The authors' summary of current knowledge of infant crying is comprehensive and well presented ... The book is helpful for those who deal with infant development, especially those interested in developmental psychology.' The Lancet'It is very welcomed and instructive for those interested in or dealing with infant crying, especially from the scientific point of view. The book is excellent at presenting the state of art of infant crying and combines clinical and nonclinical fields together ... The book is undoubtedly valuable and includes extensive information for those dealing with cry research.' APA Review of Books'A fascinating and informative book based on extensive research around the reasons why some infants constantly cry ... A book I would recommend to any unit that deals with infants and their parents. The information contained in the book will instill in the reader a firmer understanding about the complexity which surrounds the crying baby and will empower professionals to offer more effective interventions to the parent or carer to help resolve this very complex and stressful issue of the crying baby.' Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No. 170 Elimination disorders (nocturnal enuresis, urinary incontinence and encopresis) are among the most common disorders of childhood. Some disorders are primarily genetically determined, in others environmental factors predominate. Also, the rate of comorbid behavioural disturbances differs greatly from one syndrome to another. Because of this variety and heterogeneity, each disorder requires specific approaches in assessment and treatment. This book provides an evidence-based overview of functional elimination disorders. It draws on the standardisation and terminology suggested by the International Children's Continence Society. Short case vignettes, photos and line drawings, as well as questionnaires and charts are provided. To enable a quick orientation for clinical purposes, each chapter is followed by summaries, guidelines and diagrams. It will be of interest to all professionals working in the field.Trade Review"[This book] is a bit of a treasure trove. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisA quick, non-invasive, non-intrusive and cost-effective method with high reliability and high validity is much in demand for the early detection of neurological anomalies which point to cerebral palsy and developmental deficits later on in life. Over his years as a distinguished developmental neurologist, Heinz Prechtl has devised such a method; a qualitative assessment of general movements (GMs) as a specific predictor for neurological impairments. His method is described in this book. GMs form part of a distinct pattern of movements in preterm babies, term newborns and young infants. They are complex, frequent, and usually of sufficient length. Changes in the normal quality of GMs are a reliable indicator of brain dysfunction. Includes a CD-ROM giving 15 cases selected from the book. Each is of about one minute in duration and demonstrates the different age-specific movement patterns.Table of ContentsAuthors' appointments; Introduction: how it all came about; 1. Book SynopsisThe only book to deal specifically with the treatment of gait problems in cerebral palsy, this comprehensive, multi-disciplinary volume will be invaluable for all those working in the field of cerebral palsy and gait (neurologists, therapists, physiatrists, orthopaedic and neurosurgeons, and bioengineers). The book is divided into two parts. The first is designed to help the reader evaluate and understand a child with cerebral palsy. It deals with neurological control, musculoskeletal growth, and normal gait, as well as cerebral injury, growth deformities and gait pathology in children with cerebral palsy. The second section is a comprehensive overview of management. It emphasizes the most fundamental concept of treatment: manage the child's neurologic dysfunction first and then address the skeletal and muscular consequences of that dysfunction. The book has been thoroughly updated since the previous edition, with a greater focus on treatment and several entirely new topics covered, including chapters on the operative treatment of orthopaedic deformities.Video files are now available with all book purchases as a free digital download - contact admin@macKeith.co.uk for more information.Trade Review"It is an excellent book which should be read by all clinicians caring for patients with CP. Mac Keith Press A Handbook of Neurological Investigations in

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNeurological disorders in children are common: families want to know what is wrong, why it happened, and whether it will happen again. Management and treatment depend on establishing the diagnosis, which usually requires investigations, but the number of possible neurological investigations is now very large indeed, and uncritical investigations may be seriously misleading and often costly. This book, based on the authors’ vast combined personal experience, gives practical guidance on how to target any specific condition with the minimum of tests. Part 1 is a brief distillation of advice on clinical history and examination, introducing the problems that beset those who deal with neurological disorders in childhood. Part 2 outlines the investigations available to solve these diagnostic problems. Part 3 takes a problem-oriented approach to the most appropriate investigations in the various clinical scenarios that may present to the practitioner: the starting point is the patient’s presentation, not the diagnosis. Throughout, vignettes of real cases help to illustrate the use of the tests in different clinical situations. The authors co-wrote the hugely popular Handbook of Neurological Investigations (“the Blue Book”) 20 years ago. This new book, while closely following the highly successful approach of the earlier title, is thoroughly up to date, with fresh material, new case vignettes, and additional investigations covered.Trade Review"This is easy to read, particularly because of the vignettes...These cases underscore the authors' contention that the history and examination (sometime over multiple visits) with appropriate use and interpretation of investigations should remain the cornerstone of pediatric neurology." (Doody's Book Review, Feb. 2010) "I strongly recommend this book, not only to have as a reference in clinical work but also to read it. Why is this book so fascinating to read? I strongly feel there is a need to over and over again regain clinical knowledge, sound judgment and understanding. And to appreciate the invaluable importance of history taking, clinical examination and afterthought before ordering tests." Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No.186 The increased awareness of cerebral visual impairment in children, combined with improved recognition of its wide ranging manifestations, has led to its recognition as the most common cause of visual impairment in children in the developed world. Yet the subject is in its infancy, with very little published to date. Information on this complex topic has been needed by all disciplines working with disabled children for many years. This ambitious book links the work of authors from many of the major research teams in this field, who have made significant contributions to the literature on the subject of cerebral visual impairment and provide a structured amalgam of the viewpoints of different specialists. The book contains some very novel concepts, which will be of great practical value to those who care for children with visual impairment due to brain injury. Summaries of the more specialist chapters as well as clear diagrams and a glossary have been provided to increase the book’s accessibility to a broader readership. This is an exciting and important field, to which this book makes a major contribution. Trade Review"The book contains some very novel concepts, which will be of great practical value to those who care for children with visual impairment due to brain injury" (Breitbart.com: Business Wire, 16 February 2011) “this text is a much needed seminal contribution to the growing awareness and knowledge about the number one cause of pediatric vision loss in developed countries. Clairview Books Primal Health: Understanding the Critical Period

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMichel Odent, the leading pioneer for natural childbirth, indicates that the period between conception and a child's first birthday is critical to life-long health. In this prophetic book - first published in 1986 and reproduced here in its original form - he argues that different parts of the 'primal adaptive system' develop, regulate and adjust themselves during foetal life and the time around birth and infancy. 'Everything which happens during this period of dependence on the mother has an influence on this basic state of health, this primal health.' He suggests that the later well-being of adults, their ability to withstand the 'diseases of civilization' such as hypertension, cancer, alcoholism and failures of the immune system resulting in AIDS, allergies and viral diseases, can all be traced back to society's ignorance of the vital importance of the primal period. Since the first edition of this groundbreaking work, research has continued apace, offering further evidence to substantiate Odent's ideas. In the important new "Introduction and Postscript", the author reviews recent developments and relates them to the central themes of Primal Health. This book is essential reading for all who care about the health of our children and the ongoing health of society as a whole.Trade Review'Michel Odent asks the fundamental question that is often avoided: What is health? If you don't find it easy to come up with an answer - and especially if you do - read this book. It is brilliant!' - Sheila Kitzinger, author of Rediscovering Birth and Birth Your Way

Book SynopsisThe intention for this book is to outline a framework of clinical yoga therapy practice that addresses the whole child, rather than solely their symptoms. As such, collections of behaviors and clinical symptoms that have tended to co-occur in children will be addressed. The book will explore at least five developmental stages in the growth of children and adolescents, and general guidelines of how to adapt yoga practices for children of different ages and stages. Individuals of any age who suffer from chronic pain deal with a mind-body crisis on a regular basis. The book will explore the all-consuming effects of chronic pain and how children at different ages can learn to cope with it. Yoga for mood regulation in general will be covered and as well as how to differentially apply yoga techniques when the child/teen is experiencing primarily depressive or anxious symptomatology, or eating disorders. Yoga practices for trauma will be covered by age group, since the experience of trauma is radically different from one age to the next.Sensory integration and developmental disabilities will be addressed and illustrations will be used to assist the clinician in developing yoga practices that help child/teen integrate sensory experience. Yoga practices that involve kinesthetic, auditory and visual repetition help these kids stay connected to the world around them, and bring relief from the hallucinations. Book SynopsisAs compared to adult-onset spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals with childhood-onset SCI are unique in several ways. First, as a result of their younger age at injury and longer lifespan, individuals with pediatric-onset SCI are particularly susceptible to long-term complications related to a sedentary lifestyle, such as cardiovascular disease, and overuse syndromes, such as upper extremity pain. Second, they experience complications, such as scoliosis and hip dysplasia, which may affect them both during childhood and as adults.Persons with pediatric-onset SCI also have unique developmental needs. They experience the typical ongoing challenges of each developmental stage (e.g., childhood, adolescence) as well as changes owing to their SCI. Finally, individuals with pediatric-onset SCI face health system discontinuities, such as the transition from pediatric medical care to adult care and the transition from parent-controlled health care to self-management. This book is intended for clinicians of all disciplines who may only occasionally care for youth with SCI to those who specialize in SCI as well as clinical and basic researchers in the SCI field. Topics covered include new developments in pediatric SCI research, current standards for optimal care, areas lacking scientific evidence, and recommendations for clinical practice and future research.Table of ContentsPreface Section 1: Overview (Section Editor: Zebracki) Life with a SCI: A personal reflection Epidemiology Life care planning Assessment of SCI Section 2: Early Management of the SCI (Betz) Pathophysiology of Pediatric SCI Acute Management Principles of Treatment of Spine Stability in Children with SCI Section 3:Unique Issues in Pediatric SCI (Vogel) Non-Traumatic SCI High Cervical Injuries Dual Diagnoses: TBI Section 4: Medical Management (Vogel) Neurogenic Bladder and Bowel: Assessment, Management and Outcomes Spasticity Autonomic Dysfunction Medical Complications and Management Skin Integrity Metabolic Complications and Nutrition Pain: Overview, Assessment and Treatment Section 5: Neuro-musculoskeletal management (Betz) Orthopaedic complications Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Overview, Management and Outcome Upper Extremity Function Section 6: Physical Rehabilitation (Mulcahey) Rehabilitation Mobility for Children with SCI Section 7: Psychosocial (Zebracki) Education and Vocation Emotional Impact and Functioning Long-Term Outcomes Recreation and Leisure Time Section 8: Research Priorities and Future Directions (Mulcahey) Biological interventions/ clinical trials Neurological Recovery and Restorative Rehabilitation Advances in imaging
