Book SynopsisThis book presents the latest evidence-based approaches to assessing and managing movement disorders in children. Uniquely, the authors have chosen to examine not just children with developmental coordination disorder, but also children with movement difficulties as a co-occurring secondary characteristic of another development disorder, including Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific language Impairment and Dyslexia. Guidelines are underpinned by motor learning theory, empiricism and professional practice. The authors have taken an ecological approach to management and show how professionals and carers working together can make relatively simple changes in a child's life that aggregate to substantial support. The book is rich in case studies to demonstrate the adaptability of these guidelines and show how they may be applied to children of different ages, abilities, and environments. The final chapter is comprised of interviews of thirteen notable clinicians and academics with intervention methodologies from around the world. This book is a valuable guide for anybody working with children with movement difficulties, including clinicians, teachers and parents.Table of ContentsNotable Clinicians Appointments ix Foreword xi Preface xiii 1 The nature of movement difficulties and developmental disorders 1 2 Principles from motor learning 32 3 Assessment and intervention 52 4 Assessment and other information: Case studies 72 5 From profiles through objectives to action 100 6 Specific intervention guideline 123 7 Case studies: Support and intervention 159 8 Interviews with notable clinicians and academics on intervention methodologies 190Anna Barnett, Reint H Geuze, Beth Hands, Sheila E Henderson, Amanda Kirby, Victoria McQuillan, Cheryl Missiuna, Motohide Myahara, Helene Polatajko, Mellissa Prunty, Bouwien Smits-Engelsman, Marina M Schoemaker and Peter Wilson 9 At a glance: Moving forward in the right direction 214 Index 221

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPediatric Swallowing and Feeding: Assessment and Management, Third Edition provides information to practitioners interested in and involved with children who demonstrate swallowing and feeding disorders. Since the 2002 publication of the second edition, there has been an exponential increase in the number of medically fragile and complex children with feeding/swallowing disorders. A corresponding proliferation in the related basic and clinical research has resulted in the increased appreciation of the complicated inter-relationships between structures and systems that contribute to feeding/swallowing development, function, and disorders. Case studies throughout the book provide examples for decision making and highlight salient points. New to the Third Edition Maureen A. Lefton-Greif, PhD, CCC-SLP, is welcomed as co-editor. She brings extensive research expertise and clinical practice in pediatric dysphagia and feeding. All chapters contain significant updated evidence based research and clinical information. New chapters focus on the genetic testing and conditions associated with swallowing and feeding disorders, and the pulmonary manifestations and management of aspiration. World Health Organization (WHO) description of an International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) sets the stage for an in-depth discussion of clinical feeding evaluation procedures, interpretation, and management decision making. Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding continues to be the leading text on pediatric dysphagia that provides practical information for clinicians seeing children with swallowing and feeding disorders. The overall importance of an appropriate fund of knowledge and shared experience employing team approaches is emphasized throughout this third edition as in the earlier editions of this book.Table of ContentsPreface Foreword About the Authors Contributors Chapter 1. Book SynopsisCommunity-Academic Partnerships for Early Childhood Health is the first volume in the Interdisciplinary Community-Engaged Research for Health series. In this first volume, series editors Farrah Jacquez and Lina Svedin have invited academics around the country who participated in the first cohort of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJ) prestigious, innovative Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) program to share results from their efforts. These three-person teams composed of two researchers and one community partner used applied research to create measurable change in healthcare and health outcomes for young children. Spanning disciplines from public health, psychology, policy, economics, medicine, nutrition and geography, academics teamed up with community partners, including medical practitioners, nonprofit leaders, and policymakers to create action and community benefit through research, intervention, and policy development. From research on the nonmedical needs of women in the Mississippi Delta, WIC programs in Puerto Rico, and children’s advocacy in Cincinnati, Ohio, the contributors describe seven cases depicting valuable stepping stones for academic and community partners to collaborate and create a culture of health in the United States. Trade Review"Authentic and effective partnerships between researchers and community members shape research from idea to action, and promise more appreciable and enduring impacts. These Interdisciplinary Research Leaders [and their cases] offer first-hand experiences of the challenges and promise of such partnerships. This book is a guide for a better world through better research." -- J. Michael Oakes, VP of Research, University of Minnesota and Director, Interdisciplinary Research Leaders

Book Synopsis“A volume brimming with humanitarian lessons in medicine and life alike.” —Kirkus Reviews A generous, compassionate book about what it is to be human and what it is to care. Paul Seward writes in language so clear and compelling you can see straight through it and into the beating heart beneath. —Kate Cole-Adams, author of AnesthesiaDrawing on a career launched in the first days of the specialty of emergency medicine, Dr. Paul Seward takes the reader with him into the ER in his riveting memoir. Told in fast-paced, stand-alone chapters that recall unforgettable medical cases, Patient Care offers the fascination of medical mysteries, wrapped in the drama of living and dying. A snap judgment about a child nearly kills him, and a priest who may be having a heart attack refuses treatment. An asthmatic man develops air bubbles in his shoulders, and a pharmacist is haunted by a decision he makes. But the book goes beyond these stories. Each chapter explores ethical questions that remind us of the full humanity of patients, nurses, coroners, pharmacists, and, of course, doctors. How do they care for strangers in their moments of crisis? How do they care for themselves? Dr. Seward rejects doctor-as-God narratives to write frankly about moments of failure, and champions the role of his colleagues in health care. And, for all the moral dilemmas here, there is plenty of wit and humor, too. (See the patient who punches our doctor.) Readers of Patient Care will find themselves thinking along with Dr. Seward: “What is the right thing to do? What would I do?”

Book SynopsisEEG often plays a less important role in the differential diagnosis of cerebral seizure disorders than it used to do. Imaging procedures have come to overshadow it completely in many cases. In view of the current literature on the EEG in epilepsy, this shift in diagnostic priorities may be partly justified, at least as far as adults are concerned. But on no account does this apply to childhood epilepsy. This volume provides a critical review of the pertinent literature and shows quite clearly that very little attention is paid to major topic in this field.

Although cognitive development in children is influenced by similar factors to adults, the role of early damage, modification of cerebral organisation and interruption of the learning process are also likely to be important. Devoted to cognitive function and dysfunction in children with temporal lobe epilepsy, this book highlights those domains that demand further research and those for which immediate established techniques for a better global care can be undertaken.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisBook & DVD. This book covers a wide range of disease conditions that are characterised by involuntary movements possibly associated with signs of more diffuse dysfunction of the nervous system. These include both genetically determined and acquired conditions, running a clinical course that may be progressive, static, or paroxysmal. Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the movement disorders of children. There has been an increase in our understanding of the pathogenesis of these disorders, and new perspectives for their diagnosis and treatment have emerged. This book aims to provide neurologists, paediatricians, and specialists in developmental medicine with a comprehensive update on these issues. The more recent advances on dystonias, neurotransmitter disorders, chorea and PANDAS, tics and Tourette syndrome, paroxysmal dyskinesias, psychogenetic movement disorders and other specific syndromes and diseases -- such as opsoclonus-myoclonus, rapid onset dystonia-parkinsonism, pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration and Rett syndromes -- are illustrated, and current topics on genetics, biochemistry, brain imaging, physiological investigations, quantitative assessment, and the pharmacological and surgical treatment of childhood movement disorders are covered. The book also includes rich video documentation which we trust may be a helpful and crucial contribution for all professionals involved in the field of movement disorders, where the correct semiologic definition of the different conditions is one of the most important but problematic steps in the diagnostic work-up.

Book SynopsisIt is well known that the incidence of epilepsies is higher in this age period than in any other time in the life span. The frequent occurrence of seizures refractory to antiepileptic drug treatments is of great concern. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the group of benign epilepsy syndromes presented in this book is clearly more prevalent in childhood than the intractable epilepsies. Neurologists and paediatricians should be familiar with these conditions because accurate diagnosis, and its consequent good prognosis, may save much suffering to the family. Special emphasis, however, is given to the small proportion of children who, in spite of presenting a usually benign disease, show an atypical evolution which hampers their neuropsychological development. It is fundamental to be aware of the possible ill effects of some antiepileptic drugs in these cases. Finally, advancements in the recognition of new -- and not so rare -- epileptic syndromes are presented. All the subjects are supported by extensive experience of the authors based in large series of patients.

Book SynopsisRecent advances in the field of developmental neuroscience have been quite exciting, especially as they pertain to infants and children, in whom neurologic development proceeds more rapidly than at any other time of life So much has now been learned of normal neurologic development, which in tun informs the more pressing work of understanding how these normal functions become disordered by genetic, physical. or neurochemical mishaps. The information thus gained can, it is hoped, provide clinicians with the means to improve both their diagnostic and therapeutic tools and, more importantly, to use this understanding in the service of preventing or mitigating the effects of these childhood neurologic disorders. The physiologic and pathologic signs of neurologic diseases are better understood in the light of the current gains made in the fields of paediatric neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuroimaging and genetics. This progress in knowledge can assuredly help the clinician to recognise the nature of the disorder and to plan the most appropriate and effective measures to improve the quality of the affected child''s life.

Book SynopsisAdvances in the neurocognitive sciences, aided by increased imaging power, have extensively confirmed that during early development specific areas of a child''s brain are designed to process specific functions -- neurologic, cognitive, linguistic, motoric, and visuospatial, among others -- and that this processing involves globally complex interconnections with other areas distributed throughout the brain: a lesion in a given area interferes with the functioning and coherence of the stem as a whole. This volume discusses the consequences of early brain injury to many parts of the brain, including the basal ganglia, with their related disorders of aphasia, OCD, and AD/HD, as well as white matter and its associated neuro-psychological impairment of intelligence, language, and visuoperception. The corpus callosum and cerebellum are studied as they relate to learning motor sequences and language as well as communication disorders and social behaviour. This book also looks at mirror neurons as they affect the understanding of others'' intentions and the development of empathy and gestural and other forms of language. The implications of these findings are examined since they have a critical effect on the rehabilitative and educational efforts that are being designed to mitigate the effects of early brain lesions on the growing child.

Some of the chapters focus on the new-born infant and the first years of life, highlighting the most appropriate MRI, clinical, and EEG techniques to investigate the developing brain. State-of-the-art techniques used in older children are also presented that afford a better understanding of the correlation between function and brain structure in young patients with brain lesions. New genetic discoveries are particularly emphasised, as is the possibility of performing accurate phenotype -- genotype correla-tion by combining the latest methods, such as muscle MRI and genetic information, in order to identify MRI patterns associated with specific genetic disorders. In all chapters an effort is made to combine technical data with clinical applications in order to show, when possible, how these novel procedures can also be used in rehabilitation. This book will be of interest to paediatricians, paediatric neuro-logists, neonatologists, and to all those who are involved in the diagnosis and care of children with neurologic disabilities.
