Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Leadership Performance Beyond Expectations
Book SynopsisThe second edition of Leadership offers a unique, highly-applied academic treatise on leadership, uniquely blending a chronological analysis of the last 100 years of leadership theory with exclusive CEO interviews. The case studies, expert insights and other teaching aids are timely and hard hitting, making this textbook relevant, insightful and informative, while a research chapter empowers the reader to competently question the leaders that shape our world. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Complexity of Consultancy
Book SynopsisConsultancy is a lucrative industry dependent on the production and use of tools and techniques which hold out the promise of success for the organisations it supports: transformation, or greater efficiency and effectiveness, perhaps even culture change. However, a critical and important question is whether these promises are fulfilled in everyday practice in organisations. Is it possible at all for consultants to predict and control the changes that their clients ask for? This volume reframes the role of consultants from detached observers wielding a stable body of knowledge useful in all contexts, to that of skilled participants in the conscious and unconscious processes of organisational life.In this book, one of three in a series looking at complexity and management, the expert authors bring together their experiences to provide vibrant accounts of how to lead in everyday organisational situations using practical judgement. The book includes a brief historical intrTrade Review"To the extent that consultancy involves immersing oneself in an alien (client) environment so as to elicit a feel for the culture and relational dynamics of that setting, it represents a derivative – albeit commercial – form of ethnography. What better method, then, to explore the practice of consultancy itself? Furthermore, and as the editors of this volume rightly observe, the complexity and uncertainty of everyday consultancy life belies the orderliness and linearity of consultancy technique prescribed in mainstream management literature. The (auto)ethnographic methods advanced collectively by the contributors of this book takes aim at this tension. This volume makes for a read that is genuinely insightful, rewarding, and pedagogically rich."Dr. Tom Vine, Associate Professor, University of Suffolk, and editor, Ethnographic Research and Analysis: Anxiety, Identity and Self"This timely book is for reflective managers as well as consultants who are unconvinced or disillusioned by conventional wisdom. It proposes a ‘grown up’ approach that moves away from the easy idealizations and simplifications of organizational realities and consultancy interventions. Based upon insights born of curiosity and lived experience, each chapter deals with the ‘dirt’ and explores the ‘shadows’ of organizing and managing. Emphasizing the importance of increased self-understanding and deeper sense-making, this path-breaking book urges and advances the adoption of more thoughtful, less self-defeating means of grappling with the demanding, contradictory practices of managing and consulting."Prof. Hugh Willmott, Bayes Business School"How stimulating to encounter a text that probes those discomforting experiences that arise during consulting processes, and, rather than explaining them away or trying to avoid them, shows how discussing these frankly and thoughtfully unearths a fertile ground for informing ethical action."Dr. Patricia Shaw, Co-founder of the Doctor of Management Programme at University of Hertfordshire"A unique book, based in the autoethnographic experience of its contributors, this collection provides a richly nuanced and reflexively theorised insight into the complex reality of everyday consultancy practice. It is essential reading for practitioners, researchers and students."Prof. Ian Burkitt, University of BradfordTable of Contents1 Moving beyond neutrality: recognising the moral agency of the consultant through reflexive inquiries into shame 2 Consulting: facilitation and shame: working together to avoid challenges to our sense of self in the recognition of others 3 What are consultants actually recognised for? 4 Actualising plurality: an Arendtian perspective on responding to powerlessness and loss of freedom 5 Collaboration as a politics of affect 6 Selling ourselves short: marketing the self strategically: towards success beyond recognition Conclusion: summarizing reflections on the practice of consultancy

Taylor & Francis Ltd Organizing Logics Nonprofit Management and Change
Book SynopsisNonprofit organizations are conventionally positioned as generators of social and cultural forms of capital for the common good. As such they occupy a different space to other types of organizations such as corporate firms that exist primarily to generate economic capital for private owners/shareholders. Recent years, however, have seen professionalization promoted widely by funders, policy-makers and nonprofit practitioners across the globe. At the same time, there has been an increasing cross-over of employees from private and public bodies into nonprofits. But do such shifts open up space for the wholesale importation of managerialism into and commercialization of the nonprofit sphere? Are nonprofits at risk of being reconstituted as primarily economic entities, serving the interests of a leadership elite? How are such changes in an organization's trajectory brought about? Taylor & Francis The Corporate Criminal
Book SynopsisDrawing upon a wide range of sources of empirical evidence, historical analysis and theoretical argument, this book shows beyond any doubt that the private, profit-making, corporation is a habitual and routine offender. The book dissects the myth that the corporation can be a rational, responsible, ''citizen''. It shows how in its present form, the corporation is permitted, licensed and encouraged to systematically kill, maim and steal for profit. Corporations are constructed through law and politics in ways that impel them to cause harm to people and the environment. In other words, criminality is part of the DNA of the modern corporation. Therefore, the authors argue, the corporation cannot be easily reformed. The only feasible solution to this ''crime'' problem is to abolish the legal and political privileges that enable the corporation to act with impunity. Trade ReviewFew academic books demand the kind of critical attention that The Corporate Criminal demands. This is surely the most powerful and compelling critique of the corporation ever written. Tombs and Whyte pull no punches in this arrestingly accessible but scholarly book. Their argument is simple – its legal and historical construction is such that the resulting corporation is endemically criminogenic and thus beyond reform. Their conclusion is utterly persuasive, ‘the goal of corporate opposition must be the abolition of the corporation’ - Penny Green is Professor of Law and Globalisation and Director of the International State Crime Initiative at Queen Mary University of London, UKTombs and Whyte provide a brilliant, unflinching and original account of corporate power in neoliberal capitalism. Their careful analysis – rich in both empirical and theoretical insights - convincingly reveals that corporations cannot balance economic progress with social welfare, but also that the only effective corrective is to disassemble the corporate form. This superb book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand how and why corporations have come to define and destroy our daily lives, and what do about it. – Susanne Soederberg, Queen’s University, Canada It is clear that today, everyone is aware of the devastating effects of corporate capitalism on the environment, global inequality, and various other aspects of our societies and daily lives. What is utterly refreshing about Tombs and Whyte’s book, is the realisation that none of these effects can be mitigated by legal reform or neoliberal regimes such as ‘corporate social responsibility’. What is needed is a revolution in our thinking about, and action towards, corporate capitalism, and Tombs and Whyte’s call to ‘bring down the corporation’ deserves to be carried far and wide. - Grietje Baars, The City Law School, City University London. This book offers readers a provocative brief for the case that corporations are in fact not a sustainable enterprise, and that their inherently criminal and criminogenic nature must be fully recognized.— David O. Taylor & Francis Occupy Management
Book SynopsisIt can be said that our times are characterized both by the omnipresence of organizations and by the destabilization of organized social life, caused by the erosion of its structural and moral foundations such as long-term employment, social trust or an actual observance of the proclaimed codes of ethics. At the same time there is a huge and growing potential for organized change due to the amount of students and graduates of different types of management studies and programmes all over the world. The role of the state may become atrophied and corporations seem all too eager to seize ever more power while renouncing responsibility towards the environment and the employees, but a huge and unprecedented number of people from all walks of life, all social classes and all countries now have the qualifications to take over the responsibility for social organizations. The objective of Occupy Management: Inspirations and Ideas for Self-Organization and Self-Management iTrade Review‘Monika Kostera’s book isn’t about Occupy, and all its related social movements, but uses the metaphor of occupation as an entryist injunction to take back ‘management’ from those who wish to make it a discipline based on hierarchy and order. It’s a kind of squatting, though a gentle and polite one. The tone of the book is to celebrate all the things in heaven and earth that are not dreamt of in conventional managerialism and use them as imaginative springboards to different ways of thinking about management.’ - Martin Parker, University of Leicester UK, excerpt from review in Organization, March 2016, SAGE Publications‘In its playful style, its photographic illustrations from the author’s valuable collection, its joyful spirit, and its totally uninhibited mix of personal storytelling and poetry [this book] draws the reader into the author’s private life with the free ranging discussion of ideas; this book provides a welcome antidote to the stifling straightness of much academic writing.’ - Yiannis Gabriel, University of Bath and University of Lund, excerpt from review in 'Management Learning', September 2014, SAGE Publications'This is a tremendously important text, standing out among the rising tide of studies and manifestoes aimed at tapping the heretofore neglected yet profuse supplies of human faculties and energies marginalized and suppressed by the orthodox bureaucratic model of management. It offers simultaneously a profound diagnosis of the current state of affairs, an exhaustive inventory of its limitations and deficiencies - as well as opening new vistas and presenting a thorough analysis of an art of management fit to avail itself of the novel opportunities the post-bureaucratic era might offer.' - Zygmunt Bauman, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Leeds, UK'All those who want to participate in positively changing the world by finding and introducing new and feasible solutions to existing problems and needs certainly find in the book inspiration and motivation essential for pursuing their mission.' - Aneta Milczarczyk, Freelance Researcher and Project Coordinator'Occupy Management! Engages with management from the heart. It explores the joys of organization, and the tyranny of domination. A unique and challenging approach to management in contemporary life.' - Jonathan Murphy, Visiting Professor, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark'This is a remarkable book, simultaneously profound, thought-provoking, and beautiful. Professor Kostera has fashioned a genuinely mesmerizing lens on organizing, a ‘through-the-looking-glass’ one that is considerably more inviting and humanistic than most others in this field. She also combines old-world scholarship and sophistication with highly contemporary thinking. The result is a kind of organizational nouvelle cuisine that is at once lyrical, deep, satisfying, and eye-opening. Taylor & Francis Effective Organizational Change
Book SynopsisOrganizations are constantly evolving, and intelligent leadership is needed during times of transformation. Change leaders must help people become aware of, understand and find meaning in the new things which arise â they must oversee a sensemaking process.Addressing this need, Effective Organizational Change explores the importance of leadership for organizational change based on sensemaking. Combining a theoretical overview, models and conceptual discussions rich with in-depth examples and case studies, this book uncovers what it is that leaders actually do when they lead change through sensemaking. It presents the most current sensemaking research, extends earlier work by developing the concept of âlandscapingâ, and provides guidelines on how leaders can drive sensemaking processes in practice. This book is for undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students of organizational change, as well as managers embarking on change projects within their organizations.Trade Review‘I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Effective Organizational Change: leading through sensemaking’. Einar and Jacob have done a brilliant job in bringing the challenge of organizational change alive through their focus on individuals, personal realities, and sensemaking. The ability to understand (not necessarily agree with) and act on the very personal realities of others is crucial when initiating and leading organizational change. Indeed, a focus on people rather than on strict rules and structure is what will enable successful change. This view is not only embraced but strengthened through this work, and Effective Organizational Change is an essential read for both scholars and practitioners.’ - Professor Rune Todnem By, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Change Management, and co-author of Managing Change in Organizations, Staffordshire University Business School, UK‘There are many books on organizational change, but this one renews and transcends the genre! This book proposes an engaging view of how change leaders can travel inside "the spiral of sensemaking". I enjoy reading this book because it intelligently demystifies why most organizational changes fail and translates a decade of practice-based research into a set of reflexive tools for practitioners.’ - Linda Rouleau, Professor of Organization Theory, Professorship in Strategy Organization and Social Practices, HEC Montreal, Canada‘This book is a successful combination of academic excellence and in-depth practical experience. The landscaping metaphor gives a breath of fresh air to a field that for too long has been dominated by superficial how-to handbooks and "best practice"statements. This is indeed a really important and needed contribution in a time of uncertainty and rapid change.’ - Jerry Karlsson, CEO, Swedish Institute for Quality‘By combining theory and practice, the authors have produced an excellent, informative and insightful book which addresses key issues in leading change, especially the vital role played by sensemaking processes.’ - Professor Bernard Burnes, Chair of Organisational Change, Stirling Management School, University of Stirling, UK‘This is not just another text book on organizational change. Instead of presenting a bunch of old and new theories about change, the authors have written a testimony that really captures the challenges of leading change in an imperfect world. It is obvious that they have been out there in the trenches. To put it simple: this is a must-read-book that really makes sense.’ - Anders Mellberg, former CEO, Agria InsuranceTable of Contents1. SAGE Publications, Inc The Discipline of Teamwork
Book SynopsisJames R. Barker's contributions to the extant literature on one of the most significant transformations in contemporary organizational practice include 1) Embedding the discussion of teamwork within the broader context of organizational and social culture, 2) Broadening the treatment of participative management to include both local control and positive discipline, and 3) Demonstrating the important theoretical and practical links between the concepts of member participation and member identification. As a bonus, readers are introduced to the 'discursive foundations' for fashioning productive conversations about participative management that can be both valid and valuable. --David Whetten, Professor of Management, Brigham Young University James R. Barker's The Discipline of Teamwork makes a number of important contributions simultaneously. It demonstrates the power of good analytical theory, drawing on a classical tradition of writers such as Weber, Durkheim, and Foucault to illuminate the organizational, moral, and discursive realities of a major management change program in an organization. Beyond mere advocacy of a change process, as in the 'popular' management literature, it provides analysis of how and what such changes in process mean for the lived-experience and self-understanding of the people who have to make sense of these changes that consultants and managers advocate. --Stewart Clegg, Faculty of Business,University of Technology, Sydney The Discipline of Teamwork represents a major work at the fulcrum of organizational culture, organizational communication, and social change. Barker spent over two years collecting data through depth participant-observation and intensive interviewing in a high-tech manufacturing company that made and intentional shift in its organizational structure and culture from traditional methods of assembly to the use of self-directed work teams. From his position of trust within the ranks of both employees and management, he documents and analyzes this radical transition, carefully studying how the changes were implemented, their latent and manifest outcomes, and the modification made to them from both bottom and top levels. This work documents a paradigmatic revolution in the business world that has ultimately anticipated and the laided the ground work for the quality management movement and its successor, thinking out of the box. --Patricia A. Adler, University of Colorado Recent years have brought team-based and collaborative management to the forefront of our organizational leadership. Teamwork has permeated all aspects of the work world and continues to gain momentum. In The Discipline of Teamwork James R. Barker explores the social consequences of this participatory work environment. Writing from the team member perspective, James R. Barker focuses on the human cost of participation and the effects of this discipline on team members. He details how the discipline develops, matures, and creates social consequences for organizational participants, and provides insight into how we can make teamwork a positive experience for all involved. This lively and well-written book will provoke team members, as well as management scholars, students, and executive consultants, to consider how the discipline of teamwork affects them and what they ought to do about these consequences.Trade Review"The Discipline of Teamwork represents a major work at the fulcrum of organizational culture, organization communication, and social change." -- Patricia A. SAGE Publications, Inc HighPerforming SelfManaged Work Teams
Book SynopsisSince the mid-1970s, pressure from international competition has forced U.S. businesses to look for better ways to achieve and maintain a competitive position. At the same time, public organizations have been asked to produce their services with fewer dollars. The result of these trends has been a growing urgency among public and private organizations to find new ways of reducing their expenses while maintaining or increasing productivity and quality. One popular tool is the self-managed work team (SMWT). How is it different than a work group or short-term team? Which problems compel an organization to create an SMWT? What factors explain successful SMWTs? What must the organization do to develop high-performance, cost-effective teams? In High-Performing Self-Managed Work Teams, Dale E. Yeatts and Cloyd Hyten, Principle Investigators for the three-year National Science Foundation study of the performance of SMWTs, answer these questions and thoroughly examine the most widely accepted theories that attempt to explain SMWT performance. They introduce a synthesis of these theories based on 10 case studies from three different settings: manufacturing, public service, and health care. In an accessible style, the authors lead students and professionals to better understand the theory behind SMWTs as well as the practical aspects of when to use SMWTs to find solutions and how to develop achieving teams. Triarchy Press Management Flaws
Book SynopsisPresents a collection of more than 80 of business guru, Russell Ackoff's management f-laws: the uncomfortable truths about how organizations really work, what's wrong with the way we design and manage businesses, what makes managers tick... and how we can make things work better.Trade Review"Reading Russell Ackoff's slim new volume, Management f-Laws (with Herbert Addison and Sally Bibb, Triarchy Press), is like being pricked by a series of delayed electric shocks. At first glance and on their own, the book's 81 short aphorisms, paradoxes and put-downs seems nothing special. The first shock comes as the implication sinks in, followed by a chain-reaction of secondary ones as the first implication interacts with subsequent ones, until shocks are going off all over and you are left in no doubt that you are in the presence of one of the profoundest and wittiest brains ever to engage with the bizarre human activity called management." Simon Caulkin ~ The Observer "If you ever need a reality check after stumbling out of some appalling management meeting, or just need cheering up on a long business trip, this is the book for you. Just about every myth or pompous delusion about management gets punctured in the course of 160 feisty pages." Stefan Stern ~ The Daily Telegraph Skim it, if you like, and raise the odd wry smile of rueful recognition. Or undergo a self-examination course. Take each f-Law in turn and ask yourself how it applies to you, to your role in the organisation and to your organisation as a whole. Do it seriously and you might learn a lot. But the book might be best used as the basis for a serious conversation with colleagues. There is truth at the heart of all the laws, and it will be best dragged out in discussion, perhaps as one f-Law at a time. Every meeting, someone has suggested, could start with a short f-Law meditation - or might that be too American?

Ackoff''s Memories tell of his experiences of serving in the US Army during World War II; of bringing up a young family; of encountering different cultures whilst working abroad. From analyzing birth rates in India, to a fireside chat with the Queen of Iran, to introducing theme parks to the US, the stories collected in ''Memories'' lay bare the workings of a number of well-known businesses and other organizations - and the people who run them. They describe common attitudes, behaviors and assumptions, which, if left unchallenged, can destabilize or even destroy an organization. Book SynopsisEmpowering organizations to thrive, this book provides a clear diagnostic framework with specific approaches and processes that leaders can use to build a negotiation function that will succeed each and every time.Negotiation is a required skill and a core competency, but most organizations focus exclusively on individual negotiation skills and abilities and pay little attention to the internal culture and environment that shapes and guides these individuals. This book takes a dramatically different approach to building success in each and every negotiation, producing results that align with organizational strategy at all levels.Professionals in sales, procurement and supply chain, human resources, change management, mergers and acquisitions, contracts, start-ups, construction partnering, and training consultants and students of business and law will value a text that understands how to build negotiation skills and capability across the organization by aligning individTrade Review"Strategic Negotiation: Building Organizational Excellence teaches us that consistent success in negotiating ultimately rests not on an organization having great negotiators--those are needed--but on the organization being built and optimized to support great negotiating. Furlong and Gordon take us a step farther than the existing literature, and provide clear guidance for the internal work an organization must do to prepare to effectively partner with negotiating counterparts. The guidance is specific, nuanced, and presented with clear specification for implementation. And a hidden gem here: the NCM not only sets a company up for better negotiations: it points to much better overall integration of structure, strategy and practice across the organization."Eben A. Weitzman, PhD, Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance / John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies / University of Massachusetts Boston"Negotiation teaching has always focused on what the spokespeople say to each other, around a table or zoom screen. This book goes far beyond this, to explain what an organization must do to bargain well. It’s unique among books on bargaining—it explains, clearly and straightforwardly, what a community group or large corporation should do to prepare its people to bargain effectively and achieve its long term goals." Professor Dwight Golann, Suffolk University Law School"Strategic Negotiation: Building Organizational Excellence is a game changer! This is the perfect book for anyone that wants to learn about the inner workings of the art and science of negotiating. This is Da Vinci - artist and engineer. For the first time ever, there is a book that takes a comprehensive approach to providing tools needed to educate individuals and organizations about negotiation and how the two work in partnership to create a standard and uniformity in how we negotiate. I will be using this masterpiece as mandatory reading in both my undergraduate and graduate courses. The days of how we traditionally build negotiation competency is over."Dr. Marc Williams, Pacific University, Founding Director, Center For Entrepreneurship, Sports and Entertainment"If you're looking for a research-based how-to guide on navigating negotiations within your organization, then this is one you should definitely keep by your nightstand. The negotiation frameworks, countless real-world examples, and in-depth analysis made Strategic Negotiation table a powerful resource for both novice to experienced negotiators. "Coach AK Ikwuakor, Certified Executive Coach & Sales Coaching Lead at Google"Josh and Gary have identified and solved for a real gap in the space of negotiation theory and training. By taking a team and systems approach to enhancing the skill set for the organization, not just the individual, they tap into all of the alignment and reinforcing mechanisms necessary to drive meaningful and sustainable behavior change and organizational impact."Stephen Frenkel, Voyager Executive Consulting, LLC, Senior Director of Organizational Development at Cigna"A fresh look at the elements of successful, repeatable negotiation competence for organizations. By focusing on the organization and not just individual negotiator's skills, this book is a real contribution to the field. Graphics, summaries, and real-world examples give added value."James E McGuire, JAMS, Mediator and Arbitrator"Most view negotiation as occurring between two disputing parties. Sometimes, in online dispute resolution, technology serves as a kind of 'Fourth Party,' assisting in some way to manage communication. Strategic Negotiation: Building Organizational Excellence expertly points us in a new and valuable direction by alerting us to the powerful influence of the organization on the participants."Ethan Katsh, Director at National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst"Joshua and Gary have developed a holistic and systemic negotiation approach that aims to connect individual training with organisational and institutional needs. Their Negotiation Capability Model is a useful tool to broaden the field of negotiation to help us focus on the connections between individual skills and abilities through alignment with strong organisational frameworks."Enda Young, Founder of the Negotiation and Influencing Programme at Queen's University Belfast and Managing Director of Mediation, Northern Ireland"Negotiation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Furlong and Gordon recognize this and show the reader how organizations can set the stage for negotiation success by taking a holistic approach to the practice. This book is a valuable addition to the bookshelves of negotiators and organizational leaders alike."David Wagner, University of Oregon Professor of Management"This book changed my perspective on how to train negotiators. Rather than focusing on building the skills of an individual, I learned how important the context of the organization is to set them up for success. The Negotiation Capability Model brings a clear, specific, and actionable framework to create the right environment for negotiators to truly succeed."Mary Miksch, Director of Organizational Development and Training at Neil Kelly Company"If any organisation wants to turbo-charge their negotiations then this book provides the insight. This book allows any organisation to self-assess its own maturity to develop a unique roadmap for evolving both firm and individuals over time - a must-read for individual professionals and business leaders alike!"Cosette M. Reczek, Founder, Permuto Consulting"This book offers a strong argument and path for improving your organization’s efficacy, and bottom line, by improving foundational negotiation capabilities. As an engineer, the structure and applicable model resonated loudly for the organizations I work with!"Peter Cheimets, Lead Business Developer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical ObservatoryTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ethical DecisionMaking in Management
Book SynopsisMoral pragmatism has been largely ignored in Business Ethics, despite its natural attraction and the fact that it is prominent in philosophy and socio-economic theories. The main premise of the book is that the complexity of today's business world does not permit a grand ethical theory, notwithstanding the different attempts made by scientists. Moral pragmatism is the go-to' approach where the ethical decision-making of managers varies dependent on different circumstances but it always integrates moral considerations. Ethical decision-making is no longer based simply on known rules, but entails the constant dynamic interaction of circumstances, the development of new rules, managers' past experiences, their knowledge concerning ethics, and skills of moral reasoning. This book interweaves the postmodern approach to management studies and, based on its innovative research, reintroduces moral pragmatism in Business Ethics. Taylor & Francis Organizational Behaviour and Change Management
Book SynopsisHumans are social animals, and change is a social process. To understand this social process and explain the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of individuals, knowledge of how the presence of others influences people is crucial. In this regard, bias is a concept with a lot of potential. Because cognitive and social biases influence human thinking, feelings, and behaviour, these provide insights and knowledge that are helpful, if not essential, for the field of organizational behaviour and change management. The preceding statements may seem obvious and self-evident, but practice as well as science show that they are neither. Organizational Behaviour and Change Management: The Impact of Cognitive and Social Bias aims at unleashing the potential of cognitive and social biases to develop a more effective change management theory and practice. To do so, we analysed and assessed thousands of scientific articles. The most prominent biases are structured by using a practical and comprehens

This book is packed full of ideas that will change how we talk at work. If you want to change your workplace culture Conversational Wisdom is a must read."Professor Catherine Pope, Associate Head of People & EDI, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford "I once saw the phrase 'Conversations are the smallest unit of change' and I've held that since very close to my core. And what Emily and Sara have done with Conversational Wisdom is added a serious amount of clarity to the heavy-lifting that conversations do in our everyday life and work. In change and shifting circumstances but more importantly, in pursuit of understanding. Understanding each other, understanding things and understanding how to act and achieve positive outcomes through the time-honoured tradition of conversations."Perry Timms, Founder and Chief Energy Officer of People and Transformational HR. Ranked No 1 Most Influential Thinker in HR in 2022. Author, TEDx Speaker, Guest Professor/Visiting Fellow"If we can crack conversing wisely with others – and ourselves – we have the potential to transform our lives, our organisations, and wider society. This gem of a book will make all the difference in helping us do just that."Liz Hall, editor of Coaching at Work, leadership coach, mindfulness teacher and author of Mindful Coaching and Coach your Team"This book is a timely reminder that there is more to conversation than communication. We are in fact reminded of the power of conversation. Not only can conversation promote inclusion, build relationships and enhance understanding but from an organisational perspective conversations can directly impact culture and climate. This book explains that in developing the skills and mindset to hold meaningful conversations at all levels within organisations, we can actually add value to the bottom line. It offers insight to spark ideas and wisdom to help readers to realise the potential conversations have for their people and their organisation."Dr Arlene Egan, Chief Executive Officer Roffey Park Institute"So many problems in our world are a result of a lack of, or poor, communication. Conversation lies at the heart of communication, and Emily and Sara’s focus on developing conversational skills in the world of business is exemplary. This book is deeply underpinned by organisational experience and a strong understanding of coaching and communication theory."Debbie Carter, learning and development expert, founder of InMotion Communication and former editor-in-chief of TJ"This important book redefines the art of conversation in the post-pandemic digital age. A must-read!"Sue Brooks, CEO, IMAGINE"Conversation not only enlightens you but empowers you in a way that you are equipped to draw deeper, more authentic, and genuine connections with your leaders, stakeholders, and colleagues. If you want to unleash your conversational wisdom, this book is ‘for you’ as it brings multiple case studies from practice highlighting the essence of meaningful conversation."Sanghamitra Chaudhuri, Associate Professor, Metropolitan State University, Minnesota, USA"‘Thinking out loud’ is Sara and Emily’s approach. Having worked with them both for 1-1 coaching and also group work, they were able to provide the space and time for real conversation. The structure they bring to conversations enabled an inclusive space allowing some to ‘think out loud’ but others to also use silence to think and communicate wisely. Taylor & Francis Ltd Misinformation Matters
Book SynopsisWhat is misinformation? Why does it matter? How does it spread on the internet, especially on social media platforms? What can we do to counteract the worst of its effects? Can we counteract its effects now that it is ubiquitous? These are the questions we answer in this book. We are living in an information age (specifically an algorithmic age) which prioritizes information quantity over quality. Social media has brought billions of people from across the world together online and the impact of diverse platforms, such as Facebook, WeChat, Reddit, LinkedIn, Signal, WhatsApp, Gab, Instagram, Telegram, and Snapchat, has been transformational. The internet was created, with the best of intentions, as an online space where written content could be created, consumed and diffused without any real intermediary. This empowering aspect of the web is still, mostly, a force for good. People, on the whole, are better informed and online discussion is more inclusive because barriers to participation are reduced. As activity online has grown, however, an expanding catalogue of research reveals a darker side to social media, and the internet generally. Namely, misinformationâs ability to negatively influence our behaviour both online and offline. The solution we provide to this growing dilemma is informed by Ludwig Wittgensteinâs Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, which examines the relationship between language and reality from a philosophical perspective, and complements Claude Shannonâs Information Quantity Theory, which addresses the quantification, storage and communication of digital information from a mathematical perspective. The book ends by setting out a model designed by us: a Wittgensteinian approach to information quality. It defines content published online by clarifying the propositions and claims made within it. Our modelâs online information quality check allows users to effectively analyse the quality of trending online content. This approach to misinformation analysis and prevention has been designed to be both easy to use and pragmatic. It upholds freedom of speech online while using the harm principle to categorise problematic content.Table of Contents1. Introduction, 2. Background, 3. A Philosophical Approach, 4. Interventions, 5.
