From war zones to refugee camps, prisons to hospitals, elite sport to supermarkets, each case study draws on psychoanalytic below the surface thinking to analyse, interpret and understand a leader's decisions, motivations and fears.Rachel Ellison's inter-cultural approach takes us to Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and the Central African Republic, to Honduras, the Czech Republic, the USA and the UK. Global Leadership & Coaching presents a series of individual case studies from Ellison's own experiences working with senior commercial, public and third sector leaders across 35 different countries, cultures and organisational contexts. Compellingly written, this book explores the a diverseTrade ReviewRachel’s deep and diverse insights are brilliantly brought to life through a number of fascinating case studies in this valuable contribution to the literature of leadership. Covering an extremely broad spectrum, from the deeply personal account of the experiences inside NICU to the powerful story of leading an NGO in a war zone, Rachel shows that whilst the situations may differ the fundamental challenges of leadership are universal. This book is a great resource for anyone wanting to explore leadership: accessibly written, thought-provoking and universally applicable. - Andrew Hodgson, Head of Finance Northern Europe, Uber.Every day leaders in all fields wrestle with stressful situations, but not many of us work in war zones or face life and death situations. This book draws vivid lessons from the experience of those courageous people who do. It analyses different responses to acute stress. It points the way to positive, life-enhancing solutions to extreme demands. I recommend the stories Rachel Ellison tells so well to anyone looking for inspiration for their own leadership role. - Alan Bookbinder, former Director, Sainsbury Family Charitable TrustsRachel Ellison's book speaks to everyone who has leadership responsibilities and teams to manage. Her meticulously researched case studies shed light on the issues leaders face across a fascinating range of organisations and cultures. By focussing on individuals and how they respond to very specific personal challenges in settings from prison to Paralympics, Rachel draws lessons which apply across large and small organisations. She shows how leaders grow through awareness of their own background and motives; and how important it is to engage honestly with others, respecting their culture and outlook. This book will be invaluable for everyone who wants to connect with those they lead, and to understand what real leadership means in a global context. - Sir Martin Donnelly, KCB, CMG, former Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Trade and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).This highly accessible book challenges us in an understanding of leadership that extends far beyond the more commonly defined competencies of envisioning the future and inspiring followers. It invites us to explore the critical effect of the emotional labour of work on the individual, the group and the organisation. Through the range of evocative narratives, we are invited to tolerate, feel and think about deeper, usually covert, dynamics of organisational life. The book offers a gift of insight to leaders.- Wendy Harding, PhD, CEO and Director of Academic Programs, National Institute of Organisation Dynamics, Australia. From her position of trust coaching leaders in some of the most challenging situations and her own personal experience, Rachel Ellison offers a wealth of insight which is relevant to leaders in all walks of life. Her observations of the psychological importance of space and environment in a neonatal intensive care unit, mirror some of the challenges faced by businesses seeking to reconcile the spiralling costs of city based property and a desire felt by many employees to work more flexibly outside the office. In the supermarket chapter, we meet a World Foods buyer who is truly trying to embrace and harness the power of diversity (a word too often used to refer only to matters of gender or race) to create commercial as well as cultural successes, experiences that can be applied by us all. Packed with reflective learning, this is a book I keep going back to and every time I do, I find something new to think about. - Jenny Hearn, Director PWCDiversity is key to this engaging discussion of what leadership means. Ellison has a unique ability to plot psychological learning against a backdrop of real human theatre. The canvass moves from Afghanistan to Jerusalem, from cycling to salami, from the authenticity of leadership to the authenticity of gherkins. The world has needed someone to come out and say authoritatively that diversity will help your organisation thrive more successfully and do your job better. What Ellison is telling us is that diversity is not a tick box exercise but a vital tool and in fact a requirement of effective leadership.Ellison says you win trust by learning and listening, and she doesn’t shrink from the big questions, such as what leadership teaches us about ourselves and about those around us?I loved this book and the idea that leaders are leaders, all over the world and in every walk of life. Buy a copy of this book if you want to learn about diversity of teams, how women are empowered when they join together, and how commercial success and collaboration in business can be a shared cow. - Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief Executive, Equality and Human Rights CommissionThis book presents us with diverse and deeply personal stories. It challenges us to embed the powerful lessons within them into our professional lives. As an educator, the text encouraged me to find vital learning about our work environment, space and boundaries, even from the most extreme and distressing circumstances. I was engrossed by the leader’s stories but really appreciated how the author summarised each chapter by directing the reader, to reflect on their own thinking and learning. Ellison’s insight, pace and clarity makes for a thought provoking read with lasting impact. - Niki Jackson, Director of Education NNLS / Youth Education Director. In the well populated field of Leadership Coaching books this one is different. It demonstrates how leadership takes many different guises but the qualities it requires are the same and the questions a Coach needs to explore are as relevant in times of cultural change as in active conflict zones as in board rooms. This thought provoking account of the writers experiences provides insights about how a Coach can enable the navigation of different leadership situations by considering the hidden story as well as the presenting facts. And a bonus for the reader is the stimulus questions at the end of each chapter - particularly valuable for Coach Supervision groups! - Liz Macann, former Head of Coaching, BBC.I often find it difficult to find a business book that stimulates my thinking and emotions. Rachel Ellison’s book clearly does this. I felt a personal connection and empathy with the leaders sharing their stories and could relate to the challenges they face. The real-life, non-corporate situations create powerful perspectives that are thought provoking and inspirational. It is a reminder to business leaders, sports coaches and parents of their responsibilities to care for their teams and families, as a collective of individuals with their own needs and to be a catalyst for each person to achieve their aspirations. The book challenges traditional ways of thinking with humility and in a non-arrogant style. - Geoff Ranson, Senior Director, Internal Audit Asda Wal-Mart.Rachel draws on the varied and fascinating experiences that coaching has exposed her to, creating a book that is colourful, thought-provoking and hard to put down. I especially liked the story of Fatima in Somalia and the near-impossible leadership choices she has to make. Rachel's analysis goes beyond the obvious and looks at upbringing, culture and personal drivers to help both leaders and coaches untangle complex issues at work. I loved it. / Deeply enjoyable. - Anthony Ryland, former Learning & Development Director, Samsung Electronics. We lead in a very different world today where so many rules are being rewritten in all organisations – private, public, NGO. Coaching is one essential tool which will allow us to lead effectively in such a changed world. Rachel Ellison’s fresh and provocative book challenges us in powerful ways as to how as leaders and coaches we must raise our game to remain relevant and excellent in this new world." - Alan Smith, Senior Executive at a global financial services organisation. This fascinating, insightful book takes the reader on a journey of others’ leadership experiences and coaching challenges, from the hot, dangerous war zones of Afghanistan and Syria to the mosaic tiled floors of the National Gallery, London. In each of its chapters, the author skilfully blends a personal human story with deeper more psychoanalytical insights, which can only leave us thinking harder about our leadership and interactions with colleagues. Equally skilfully the book draws out reflections for both leaders and coaches, the two complementary perspectives making it a particularly useful tool for each. - Tim Stew, British High Commissioner to Trinidad & Tobago, FCO.Rachel thoughtfully examines the essential importance of investing time in relationship building with your suppliers, and of really getting to know your team and nurture it. The international supermarket chapter skilfully raises questions about FMCG food retail in 21st century Britain, the deeper meaning and role of food in the lives of communities around the world, the type of food we buy and why. If only most consumers had the chance to read this chapter and build an understanding of the unique supply chains giving them access to wonderful produce. A must read for leaders, coaches and consumers. - Jane Steward, Managing Director, Eastgate LarderThis book provides a fascinating insight into both the art and the science of leadership coaching. The case studies are compelling and (sometimes uncomfortably) honest. The insight into how a coach picks up on signals, chooses what to name and how to frame questions will make me more self -ware as well as more observant of the unspoken, and perhaps even subconscious, cues from those who work with and for me. This book can help on the journey to becoming a transformational and not just a transactional leader. - Emma Squire, Director of Arts, Heritage and Tourism, Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.Rachel Ellison’s book about leadership and coaching is incomparably fresh. Instead of shop worn theories of coaching pummelled by tired ideas, we are brought into the life space of her clients as they live and breathe their leadership challenges and dilemmas. From a refugee camp to neonatal intensive care, to elite high performance para-sport, this is a book about leadership as it is lived in the raw and about a coach who meets her clients where their experience, intellect and emotions converge. You the reader are invited to inhabit Ellison’s world and to learn along with her what it is like to help leaders achieve programmatic and moral excellence. - Dr Larry Hirschhorn, Director, Centre for Applied Research, Philadelphia USA; Chair Bridger Memorial Award Committee, ISPSO Rachel Ellison is pioneering in relation to coaching a lovely tradition that has been highly valued in the field of psychotherapy – describing real cases in a personal way, complete with rich details and intricacies of coaching practice. The reader can follow the narrative of each case through the eyes of both the client and the coach, with additional insights provided by the psychoanalytically oriented supervision group. The stories offer a deep questioning of the ‘good practice’ imperatives of the field and challenge many traditional interpretations of how the coaching process should proceed. It is not a book with ‘how to’ strategies for being a coach or a coaching client. It offers something much more important – a glimpse into the real struggles and delights of the coaching encounter. - Tatiana Bachkirova, Professor of Coaching Psychology and Director of the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies at Oxford Brookes University, UK.Table of ContentsForeword: Dr Susan Kahn; Introduction: Rachel Ellison.Chapter 1: Leading where it's hot, dusty and dangerous: What commercial and public-sector leaders can learn about effective leadership from non-governmental development aid workers.Chapter 2: A hero is someone who wins a war, not loses a leg: How a Paralympic coach led his diversely disabled athletes to gold.Chapter 3: Stocking the World Foods aisle: The story of how a global supermarket manager had to relearn how to lead effectively, in a multi-ethnic context.Chapter 4: Cooking for Conflict Resolution: An exploration of difference. Taylor & Francis Ltd LeadershipasPractice
Book SynopsisThis book develops a new paradigm in the field of leadership studies, referred to as the leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) movement. Its essence is its conception of leadership as occurring as a practice rather than residing in the traits or behaviours of particular individuals. A practice is a coordinative effort among participants who choose through their own rules to achieve a distinctive outcome. It also tends to encompass routines as well as problem-solving or coping skills, often tacit, that are shared by a community. Accordingly, leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience. The social and material contingencies impacting the leadership constellation the people who are effecting leadership at any given time do not reside outside of leadership but are very much embedded within it. To find leadership, then, we must Trade Review"At last, a piercing and comprehensive account of the philosophical and methodological implications of seeing leadership as a collective accomplishment. Some of the most authoritative thinkers have contributed the fruits of their diverse researches, coordinated by Joe Raelin’s excellent editorial scene-setting; the whole adds up to what will surely be a land-mark text in leadership studies." –Jonathan Gosling, Professor Emeritus, University of Exeter"This book collects powerful statements from notable scholars in the emergent Leadership-as-Practice field, and confirms it as a rich alternative to the under-socialised accounts of leadership that prevail so widely. Leadership-as-Practice: Theory and Application will be an essential reference point for researchers in this and related fields." –Richard Whittington, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford"Leadership-as-Practice introduces the reader to a new paradigm that moves our field beyond the traditional views of leaders and how they can be developed. This interesting and well-researched book is authored by leading theorists from around the world and should be required reading for all scholars and students in the field of management. I highly recommend this book!" –Michael Marquardt, George Washington University"Leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience... Overall, the book provides a rich alternative to traditional views on leadership and leadership development." –Rick Holden, Liverpool John Moores University, UK"I highly recommend Raelin’s edited Leadership-as-Practice collection because of the range of contributors considering L-A-P from different perspectives. Each of the authors engages the reader through a series of critical questions, which are required to further develop and understand L-A-P more broadly both within and outside the Academy. The book is particularly useful for academics researching and teaching leadership, and for senior students, including Masters and Doctoral candidates researching leadership related topics." - Sarah I. Leberman, Massey University, New Zealand"Overall, ‘Leadership-as-practice’ is a significant contribution to the extant literature on leadership from which a more critically and reflexive form of management education (Clegg & Ross-Smith, 2003; Cuncliffe, 2002; 2004) will undoubtedly benefit. As such, we may not only wish to incorporate it into our students’ reading materials but also consider ways in which MBA, EMBA and other postgraduate students may be able to ‘experience’ the potential of L-A-P in and outside of the classroom: through raising awareness about leadership as an emergent social process; strengthening reflexivity about existing leadership practices; bringing in the learner’s contexts more explicitly; and taking into consideration the emotional and political dynamics of their organisational environments (Denyson & Turnbull, Chapter 13). The book deserves the attention of management educators and may indeed assist in informing much broader classroom discussions around current issues of social divisiveness, ethical decision-making, and corporate social responsibility." - H. Heizmann, University of Technology Sydney"Overall, I found this to be a most interesting book. A persuasive case is made for ‘leadership as practice’ as an emerging paradigm for research, theory and practice. The book has a strong theoretical basis and will appeal to academics concerned with the discursive and practice turn in the social sciences, leadership, action learning and action research. It will also be relevant to practitioners who have an interest in the theoretical underpinnings of action learning and research. Although this is not a ‘how to’ text, it gives many practice examples, illustrative of a range of L-A-P concerns. It is certainly a welcome contribution to ways of making sense of leadership and leadership practice which leave heroic and hierarchical perspectives behind and instead foreground it as more emergent, complex and socially constructed human interaction." - Jean Kellie, Hull University Business School, University of Hull"From a readership perspective, this book provides an interesting addition to the literature, and I would commend colleagues to add it to their collection. For me, the text is best suited to the postgraduate market and will provide an interesting read for many MBA and other postgraduate programmes with significant leadership content. In addition, strong undergraduate students will also be challenged by many of the ideas, and the book will be a useful addition to the reading list for my honours-level students." - Alan Johnston, York Business School, York St. John University, UK"To help close the gap, this book presents a collection of essays on leadership as practice (LAP), a "movement" (as Raelin calls it with an acknowledged wink) that seeks to refocus the camera lens from the foreground of the leader to the previously blurry background of the work context, including the menial, profoundly unsexy, and thankless tasks that the bulk of leaders engage with in the stark reality of Monday morning to Friday afternoon." - Tom Whelan, Director of Corporate Research Training Industry, Inc. Taylor & Francis Ltd College Student Leadership Development
Book SynopsisCollege Student Leadership Development introduces the idea that we all play a part in producing leadership and that learning how to participate in the process of leadership is something that all college students need to learn as part of their college academic experience. Rather than approaching leadership from the traditional model emphasizing specific skill sets, this book acquaints students with how to learn leadership using the ReAChS model of leadership development (Reflection, Assessment, Challenge, Support). It then encourages students to directly engage their own experiences to hone their leader identity and understanding of leadership as well as improve their leadership knowledge and skills. American Psychological Association The Psychology of High Performance
Book Synopsis 2020 NAGC Book of the Year Award Winner —?Finalist in the 2020 PROSE AwardsThis volume explores how early potential develops into high performance in five domains: sport (specifically golf and team sports), the professions (medicine, software engineering, and professional teams), academics (mathematics and psychology), the performing arts (dance and acting), and the producing arts (culinary arts and drawing/painting). The chapters address many questions: What does “raw” potential in a specific domain looks like? How can those abilities be nurtured and grown, and what psychosocial skills are necessary for this development? The Psychology of High Performance examines similarities and differences within and between domains and includes several personal interviews with “gatekeepers”—experts in a field whose professional judgment determines whether individuals’ developed abilities are good investmentTrade Review2020 NAGC Book of the Year Award WinnerFinalist in the 2020 PROSE Awards “This book is wonderfully interdisciplinary.” —ChoiceThis book is wonderfully interdisciplinary. * Choice *Table of ContentsContributors Acknowledgments IntroductionRena F. Book SynopsisThe goal of this volume is to begin to create those critical linkages between positive psychological attributes and relevant research areas. Undoubtedly, there are many topics in positive psychology that could not be covered in just one volume, and many more topical linkages to business ethics and social responsibility that need to be made. While much research yet needs to be done in this nascent area, we hope that much as other volumes on positive psychology served as an impetus for research in social psychology (see Snyder and Lopez, 2002) and organizational behavior (Cameron, Dutton, and Quinn, 2003), this volume will ignite scientific interest in the role positive psychology plays in key areas such as ethics and social responsibility. As the study of positive psychology continues to emerge more fully, it may well help us to better comprehend the impact of this paradigm on predicting ethical decision making, organizational citizenship, and social responsibility toward the end of creating more positive and productive workplaces in general.Table of ContentsForeword. Book SynopsisThe Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS for Adults) is an empirically based tool for evaluating dimensions of adult executive functioning in daily life. Evidence indicates that the BDEFS is far more predictive of impairments in major life activities than more time-consuming and costly traditional EF tests. The BDEFS offers an ecologically valid snapshot of the capacities involved in time management, organization and problem solving, self-restraint, self-motivation, and self-regulation of emotions. It comprises both self- and other-reports in a long form (15-20 minutes) and a short form (4-5 minutes). Special features include an adult ADHD risk index in the long form. Complete instructions for scoring and interpreting the scale are provided.QUICK VIEWWhat does it do?: Provides an ecologically valid assessment of executive functioning deficits in daily life activities.Age Range: 18-81Administration Time: Long Form: 15-20 minutes. This exceptionally well-written manual includes a detailed description of the scale's development, psychometric properties and norms, scoring, and clinical interpretation, as well as the forms themselves. The limited photocopy license clearly enhances the clinical utility of the BDEFS. All professionals responsible for assessing and understanding adults suffering the burden of executive dysfunction will find this scale highly useful and beneficial."--Rosemary Tannock, PhD, Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; Department of Medicine, University of Toronto; and Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada"Barkley has created a rating scale that is quick and easy to administer and score. The BDEFS provides valuable information regarding specific executive functioning deficits, including those found in ADHD. This scale does what a good assessment instrument should: not only does it answer questions regarding diagnosis, but it also helps clinicians identify target skills and behaviors for intervention."--Peg Dawson, EdD, Center for Learning and Attention Disorders, Portsmouth, New Hampshire "The BDEFS ushers in an era of more specific and comprehensive behavioral assessment of executive functioning difficulties encountered by adults during major functional activities. The scales are well designed to be both clinician and patient friendly. The content is broader than other available scales and the normative observations are carefully derived and extensive. Behavioral items are focused around common daily activities rather than clinical symptoms, and thus can be applied in a variety of settings. The combination of self- and other-report forms, as well as long and short forms, provides depth and flexibility. This scale is a powerful complement to traditional executive function tests."--Paul J. Information Age Publishing Culture, Work and Psychology: Invitations to
Book SynopsisThis books arises from the observation that mainstream psychology, especially work and organisational psychology (WOP), suffers from critical limitations in its attempts to deal with the complexities of work as a cultural phenomenon. We can only mention a few examples here. In the WOP field, especially in Anglo- Saxon tradition, work experiences are seen through the lenses of traditional behavioural approaches, whereas culture is seen as a `software of the mind’, to use a popular definition found in this field (based on cross-cultural mainstream psychology). `Competences’, to take another example, are thought of as something that do or do not people have inside them. Suffering, like stress (a common work-based problem of our times), is considered to be dependent on a person’s personality, perceptions or as a set of behaviours triggered by facing an `objective’ environment. Even meaning-making process can be found to be defined from a WOP mainstream point of view: meanings are `social cognitions’ shared by people by means of unidirectional socialisation processes. Therefore, the goal of this book is to deliver to the reader a new and challenging theoretical and methodological tool box, inspired by insights developed from a broad cultural psychological perspective. Its focus is on the consideration of work and organisations based on core concepts developed inside cultural psychology. Therefore, it is designed to discuss potential extensions of these concepts to work psychology.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Coaching on the Axis: Working with Complexity in
Book SynopsisThis book offers an approach to business and executive coaching that properly aligns the practice in the culture of business through the use of a relational "coaching axis" that helps to manage the complexity of the organisation and the individual as dual clients.Business and executive coaching occurs within an organisational context with the goal of promoting success at all levels of the organisation by affecting the actions of those being coached (Worldwide Association of Business Coaches, 2007). This form of coaching is distinct from other types in two ways, firstly it is focused on achieving business outcomes, and secondly, both the individual being coached and the sponsoring organization are simultaneously the client. This book explains how a coach manages the complexity of helping these two clients by acting as a narrative bridge between their stories. It offers a relational approach which resists remedial or curative notions born from coaching's human science roots and instead aligns to workplace realities. Chapters 1 -3 explore three interlocking paradigms for coaching that culturally align to the context of business. Firstly, in working with the complexity of client, systems theory is explored. Secondly, in working with the complexity of organisational culture, the notion of culture is unpacked. Thirdly, in exploring the complexity of theory, an eclectic and integrative theoretical approach is unpacked and the notion of the scientist-practitioner is explored. The remainder of the book explains the "Coaching on the Axis" approach. This approach captures the way coaching interfaces with business across three systemic dimensions situated on a hypothetical "axis." It further outlines a method to track themes, elicit insights and test actions systemically along this axis using a narrative methodology. Finally, a case study is provided. Ultimately, the book aims to assist coaches in properly aligning their practice with business, honouring the culture from which this work derives its legitimacy and sanction, and significantly increasing its likelihood of success.Trade Review'At last, a sophisticated and business-savvy account of business and executive coaching. Springer Nature Switzerland AG An Economist’s Lessons on Happiness: Farewell
Book SynopsisOnce called the “dismal science,” economics now offers prescriptions for improving people’s happiness. In this book Richard Easterlin, the “father of happiness economics,” draws on a half-century of his own research and that conducted by fellow economists and psychologists to answer in plain language questions like: Can happiness be measured? Will more money make me happier? What about finding a partner? Getting married? Having a baby? More exercise? Does religion help? Who is happier—women or men, young or old, rich or poor? How does happiness change as we go through different stages of life? Public policy is also in the mix: Can the government increase people’s happiness? Should the government increase their happiness? Which countries are the happiest and why? Does a country need to be rich to be happy? Does economic growth improve the human lot? Some of the answers are surprising (no, more money won’t do the trick; neither will economic growth; babies are a mixed blessing!), but they are all based on reason and well-vetted evidence from the fields of economics and psychology. In closing, Easterlin traces the genesis of the ongoing “Happiness Revolution” and considers its implications for people’s lives down the road.Trade Review“The book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students in the social sciences who might be taking a first course on happiness economics. … Indeed, and more generally, the book has an informal feel. … the book is both a great personal summary of Easterlin’s accumulated experience of working with subjective wellbeing data and an important rallying call for the social sciences to generate new lessons with which to increase wellbeing across the globe.” (Caspar Kaiser, Journal of Happiness Studies, Vol. 23, 2022)“An Economist’s Lessons on Happiness reveals the results of happiness studies in clear and concise chapters which are structured as if they are a college lecture. … The students are also a tool that reveals the intended audience for the book—it is written for the popular audience rather than the expert reader. … He suggests that we live in a time in which well-being is being better articulated, understood, and prioritized than ever before.” (Robert Biswas‑Diener, Journal of Happiness Studies, April 1, 2022)“An Economist’s Lessons on Happiness is a captivating and enlightening journey through many different facets of happiness. … The concepts are well explained and easy to apply. … This book provides a satisfying, holistic perspective on the many factors contributing to happiness in an educational and personable read. This is a great opportunity to assess whether we are living a life that is true to ourselves, and to identify areas for change and improvement.” (Tara Dean, The Psychologist, thepsychologist.bps.org.uk, Vol. 34, July, 2021)“An Economist’s Lessons on Happiness: Farewell, Dismal Science! … is the fruit of a lifetime of his own research and that of fellow economists and psychologists dedicated to understanding and improving happiness — whether of individuals or nations.” (Susan Bell, dornsife.usc.edu, March 17, 2021)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Part I: First Lessons.- Measuring Happiness.- Does Money Make People Happy?.- How Does Health Affect Happiness?.- Family Life and Happiness.- How Can I Increase My Happiness?.- Part II: Next Lessons.- Can Government Increase My Happiness: Transition Countries.- Can Government Increase My Happiness: Nordic Countries.- Happiness or GDP?.- Part III: Q & A.- Who Is Happier—Young or Old? Springer Nature Switzerland AG Assessing Organizational Behaviors: A Critical
Book SynopsisThis book fills a gap in international literature by providing critical reviews on variables of organizational behavior and the main psychological instruments developed to measure them. Measuring instruments developed with theoretical and methodological rigor in the field of Organizational and Work Psychology can contribute to the development of diagnostic analyses to enable organizations to implement the evidence-based changes required for their survival. These changes demand diagnoses based on precise assessments of organizational and individual variables, but many times the professionals responsible for conducting these assessments are not sure of what is the best measuring instrument available. This book is intended to serve as a guide to these professionals. The volume is divided in two parts. The first part brings together chapters dedicated to the following micro-organizational variables: Job Crafting, reactions to organizational change, Psychological Wellbeing at Work, Bridge Employment Assessment in the Work-Retirement Transition, Resilience at Work, and Leadership in Organizations. The second part presents the state-of-the-art of research on the following macro-organizational constructs: Quality of Life at Work, Organizational Climate for Creativity, Values and Organizations, Assessments of Organizational Support, and Contributions by Social Networks Analysis and Organizational Effectiveness. The last chapter presents a critical discussion about the nature and future of organization behavior measuring. Springer International Publishing AG Human Flourishing: A Multidisciplinary Perspective on Neuroscience, Health, Organizations and Arts
Book SynopsisThis open access book presents a novel multidisciplinary perspective on the importance of human flourishing. The study of the good life or Eudaimonia has been a central concern at least since Aristotelian times. This responds to the common experience that we all seek happiness. Today, we are immersed in a new paradoxical boom, where the pursuit of happiness seems to permeate everything (books, media, organizations, talks), but at the same time, it is nowhere, or at least very difficult to achieve. In fact, it is not easy to even find a consensus regarding the meaning of the word happiness. Seligman (2011), one of the fathers of the positive psychology, confirmed that his original view the meaning he referred to was close to that of Aristotle. But, he recently confessed that he now detests the word happiness, since it is overused and has become almost meaningless. The aim of this open access book is to shed new light on human flourishing through the lenses of neurosciences and health, organizations, and arts. The novelty of this book is to offer a multi-disciplinary perspective on the importance of human flourishing in our lives. The book will examine further how different initiatives, policies and practices create opportunities for generating human flourishing.Table of ContentsIntroduction: In the pursuit of human flourishing.- PART I: NEUROSCIENCE AND HEALTH.- PART II: ORGANIZATION AND POLICIES.- PART III: CARE AND FLOURISHING.- PART IV: ARTS, FASHION AND LITERATURE.- Conclusion – What we have learnt form multidisciplinary views on Human Flourishing.- List of contributors

Springer International Publishing AG The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower
Book SynopsisThis book analyzes the harms related to whistleblower retaliation, its psychosocial impacts on employees, and the institutional dysfunction it creates and perpetuates. Stigma and biases against whistleblowers interfere with their ability to make protected disclosures when harm to others is at stake. Retaliatory toxic tactics create an atmosphere and corporate culture that embodies fear and encourages bystander behavior. In this book, the authors explore psychosocial impacts across domains that include financial, legal, social, physical, and emotional well-being. Ten of the 14 chapters specifically examine the toxic tactics of retaliation: gaslighting, mobbing, marginalizing, shunning, devaluing, double-binding, career blocking, counter-accusing, bullying, and doxxing. These toxic tactics are the building blocks of workplace traumatic stress (WTS) and can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, and suicide. WTS is a term that differentiates between workplace violence or job stress, which can be components of WTS but do not fully describe the systemic hostile work environment that targets an employee. Understanding WTS and how it disrupts identity, causes moral injury, and shatters world views are important aspects for clinicians treating clients who are victims of this kind of hostile work environment. The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower Retaliation is a useful resource offering a new way for social workers, mental health providers, advocates, and other support services professionals and practitioners to assist whistleblowers. It helps clinicians understand how to view patients suffering from whistleblower retaliation and gives them a lexicon for forensic evaluations. Lawyers, especially those specializing in employment, labor, and Qui Tam cases, also could benefit from having a means to describe the psychosocial impacts of retaliation and WTS on their clients when filing for compensatory damages for pain and suffering during judicial proceedings. Finally, the book could appeal to employees and managers, human resources professionals, victim rights advocates, elected officials, media personnel, and other professionals who are interested in learning more about whistleblower retaliation and its psychosocial and cultural implications.Table of ContentsPart I – Introduction 1. New York University Press The Peer Effect
Book SynopsisHow the power of peers and peer culture shapes individual behavior and future successFor decades, parents across America have asked their kids, If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? The answer is, Duh, yes. Peers, as parents well know, have a tremendous impact on who their kids are and what they will become. And even while they insist otherwise, parents know that they're largely powerless to change this. But the effect of peers is not just a story about kids; peers can also affect adult behaviorthey affect what we do and who we are well into old age. Noted sociologists Syed Ali and Margaret M. Chin call this the peer effect. In their book, they take readers on a tour of how our peers, and the peer cultures they create, shape our behavior in schools and the workplace. Ali and Chin begin their look at the peer effect at the high school from which they both graduated: New York City's prestigious Stuyvesant High School, arguably the best public high school in the Trade Review"The Peer Effect offers persuasive and refreshing perspectives on some of the toughest cultural conversations today—from school demographics to diversity initiatives in corporate America, racism in law enforcement to the (who knew?) futility of hands-on parenting. Syed Ali and Margaret Chin combine academic authority with a forthright style that makes them seem like people who’d actually be a joy to have as peers." * Ada Calhoun, New York Times-bestselling author of Why We Can't Sleep: Women's New Midlife Crisis *"Ali and Chin knock down the myth that parents determine everything for kids and break down how peer pressure is not only about things that affect kids negatively. The Peer Effect helps readers understand segregation, economics, and one of the most valuable lessons of our pandemic era: that how we succeed in the world depends on the reinforcing success of our peers. A must-read for any parent, educator, or former student for understanding, not just schools, but how we can socialize one another into being better people." * Steven W. Thrasher, author of The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide *"Ali and Chin have written a stunning book on the power of our peers in shaping who we are and how we interact in the world. Challenging the myth that change comes from heroic individuals, willpower, or top-down commands, Ali and Chin argue that peer cultures encouraging positive norms can help fix pressing social problems. The Peer Effect is a rare book—cutting-edge research written with verve, humor, and committed to improving the world." * Victor Ray, author of On Critical Race Theory: Why It Matters & Why You Should Care *"By asserting that peers make all the difference, The Peer Effect introduces a provocative idea into a stale discourse. Surprisingly intuitive, exhaustively researched, and delightfully written, it has profound implications for everyone and every part of life. A must-read for anyone who belongs to anything!" * Lisa Wade, author of American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus *"With an engaging mix of biography and research expertise, Ali and Chin present strong arguments for the connections between inequality, communities, and individual well-being. Peers matter. This is a really witty and compelling read!" * Prudence L. Carter, author of Stubborn Roots: Race, Culture, and Inequality in U.S. and South African Schools *"Ali and Chin write with passion about the influence of peers in a variety of domains—education, policing, and the workplace. They bring a wide range of sociological insights and a good dose of humor into this wide-ranging book." * Natasha Warikoo, author of Race at the Top: Asian Americans and Whites in Pursuit of the American Dream in Suburban Schools *"The Peer Effect is a refreshingly honest evaluation of political and family dynamics that have driven personal and systemic educational decisions in NYC and around the country. This is a must-read for anyone interested in better understanding the educational landscape." * Akil Bello, Senior Director of Advocacy and Advancement at FairTest *"There's a certain allure to agency—to the idea that we make our own destinies or, in the case of parents and educators, that we can dictate how our kids' lives will turn out. The reality, however, as The Peer Effect, with its propulsive style and its engaging blend of personal anecdotes and research-based evidence makes clear, is that our agency is both created and constrained by the groups to which we belong." * Jessica McCrory Calarco, author of Negotiating Opportunities: How the Middle Class Secures Advantages in School *"Whether you’re an educator, policymaker, or organizational leader, this book will challenge you to account for the social dynamics that shape our lives and transform the places where we learn and work." * Sam M. Intrator, co-author of The Quest for Mastery: Positive Youth Development Through Out-of-School Programs *"This highly convincing and totally readable book gives readers an inside tour of the ups and downs of the U.S. educational system." * Robert Crosnoe, author of Fitting In, Standing Out: Navigating the Social Challenges of High School to Get an Education *"Authors Ali and Chin take on the issue of school reform and diversity initiatives and weave an argument around how the effect of individual peers has greater influence than top-down structural attempts at change." * Hillary Anger Elfenbein, John K. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Leadership Unhinged: Essays on the Ugly, the Bad,
Book SynopsisThe recent proliferation of populist movements worldwide — along with the often dangerous, demagogic leaders that accompany them — have prompted questions about the underlying conditions that give rise to such troubling developments. Leadership Unhinged: Essays on the Ugly, the Bad and the Weird examines what is going on at a deeper level, both collectively and individually, between leaders and followers. Employing theories derived from psychoanalytic psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology, these essays help to unravel and expose the pathological leader-follower dynamics that generate such movements. The book is infused with Kets de Vries’s now famous and inimitable style of analysis, which draws from myths, creates fairy tales, and uses irony and metaphor to bring his conclusions into greater relief and trigger new insights. As Kets de Vries explains, effective leaders have the capacity to bring people together and even make them better, stronger. Doing so suggests that those leaders are value driven, able to set a moral tone. Yet, when such a tone is absent or, at worst, twisted toward the destructive, leadership quickly becomes dangerous. History has shown the devastation left in the wake of unhinged leaders who have gone unchecked. To become fully conscious of the conditions that allow for the emergence of such leaders has become a moral requirement of our time. In ways both moving and entertaining, Kets de Vries’s new contribution puts us in a better position to fulfil that requirement.Table of ContentsIntroduction • Draws attention to the conditions that give rise to pathological leadership • Outlines the purpose and methodology of the book Chapter 1 The Dark Cloud of Crowds • Analyses the development of populist movements with reference to Nazi Germany. • Discusses contemporary conditions that support the rise of populist movements, including the enabling roles played by social media and the internet. • Examines crowd psychology in terms of the “selfish herd”, “mimicry”, etc. Chapter 2 Let’s Install Leaders for Life • Offers a tongue-in-cheek Swiftian proposal that proposes – in a satirical manner – that there are merits to installing “leaders for life”. • Provides specific analysis of Donald Trump, Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler, Mugabe, and others. Chapter 3 The Little Drum Boy or the Rise and Fall of a Flawed Leaders • Through the creation of a modern-day fairy tale, the text describes the rise and fall of one “Little Drum Boy”, with obvious reference the 45th president of the United States. • Detailed examination of the psychological factors that shaped the leadership style of “Little Drum”, including his personal traits, skills, and family dynamics. Chapter 4 A Strange Tale of Hatred • Framed by the tale of a leader named “Bolsonaro”, this chapter provides a psychological examination of hatred and how it is deployed by pathological leaders. • In addition to analyzing hatred, the chapter also looks at anger, contempt, self-righteousness, and other emotions utilized by demagogic leaders. Chapter 5 I won’t. Therefore I am. • Offers the tale of a queen who wishes to preserve her country by divorcing it from the larger federation of which it has been a part. The tale functions as an analogy of Brexit from a psychological viewpoint. • Provides a psychological analysis of the queen’s motivations and personality traits, including her stubbornness, fear of an attack on her inner core, inclination to hold on to grudges and past injuries, etc. • Looks to reveal the underlying condition that create such a psychological state, such as the separation-individuation matrix. • Concludes with a discussion of how to deal with stubborn people. Chapter 6 Life Lessons from the ‘Great Mother’ • A fairy tale about a grandma Black Widow spider that offers a psychological analysis of her from the perspective of the “Great Mother”. • Includes a discussion of leadership, organizations and gender dynamics, including the dangerous duality of attracting and repelling. Chapter 7 Lions Led by a Donkey • A short conclusion that reminds the readers not only of the negative impact of incompetent, arrogant leadership, but also the value leadership in tough times. • Discusses the need for moral leadership, courage in making the hard decisions, and creating a legacy for future generations.

Cornell University Press The Ambiguities of Experience
Book SynopsisThe first component of intelligence involves effective adaptation to an environment. In order to adapt effectively, organizations require resources, capabilities at using them, knowledge about the worlds in which they exist, good fortune, and good decisions. They typically face competition for resources and uncertainties about the future. Many, but possibly not all, of the factors determining their fates are outside their control. Populations of organizations and individual organizations survive, in part, presumably because they possess adaptive intelligence; but survival is by no means assured. The second component of intelligence involves the elegance of interpretations of the experiences of life. Such interpretations encompass both theories of history and philosophies of meaning, but they go beyond such things to comprehend the grubby details of daily existence. Interpretations decorate human existence. They make a claim to significance that is independent of their contribution tTrade ReviewJames March is a pioneer in the field of organizational decision making. For decades March, perhaps the wisest philosopher of management, has illuminated how humans think and behave, and he continues to do so in this book. He begins by reminding us of just how deeply beholden we have become, in our organizational lives, to the idea of experiential learning.... The problem is that learning from experience involves serious complications, ones that are intrinsic to the nature of experience itself and which are explored in the body of this book.... Besides being a broadly erudite scholar, March is also a poet, and his talent shines through in the depth of the insight he offers, the breadth of allusion he portrays, and the concise language he uses. Though this book is short, it is challenging: Don't pick it up looking for quick, easy lessons. Rather, be ready to ponder your assumptions about learning from experience in work and life. The rewards are here. -- Jeff Kehoe * Harvard Business Review *
