  • Humana Press Inc. Molecular Mechanisms of Neurotransmitter Release

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNeurons in the nervous system organize into complex networks and their functions are precisely controlled. The most important means for neurons to communicate with each other is transmission through chemical synapses, where the release of neurotransmitters by the presynaptic nerve terminal of one neuron influences the function of a second neuron. Since the discovery of chemical neurotransmission by Otto Loewi in the 1920s, great progress has been made in our understanding of mol- ular mechanisms of neurotransmitter release. The last decade has seen an explosion of knowledge in this field. The aim of Molecular Mechanisms of Neurotransmitter Release is to provide up-to-date, in-depth coverage of essentially all major mole- lar mechanisms of neurotransmitter release. The contributors have made great efforts to write concisely but with sufficient background information, and to use figures/diagrams to present clearly key concepts or experiments. It is hoped that this book may serve as a learning tool for neuroscience students, a solid reference for neuroscientists, and a source of knowledge for people who have a general interest in neuroscience. I was fortunate to be able to gather contributions from a group of outstanding scientists. I thank them for their efforts. In particular, I want to thank Dr. Erik Jorgensen who offered valuable suggestions about the book in addition to contrib- ing an excellent chapter. I thank US National Science Foundation and National Institute of Health for their supports.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: “Molecular Mechanisms of Neurotransmitter Release edited by Zhao Wen Wang provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the complex interactions occurring in pre synaptic neurons involved with chemical communication. … High quality illustrations a large number of which are in full color, support the information in the text … . This book is recommended for the researcher and student of neuroscience … . Neurology residents undergoing specialty training in neuromuscular disease will find this book to be an invaluable resource.” (Joseph Vito Russo, Medical Science Books, April, 2010)Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisOvercoming Multiple Sclerosis is an established and successful program of treatment. Once a diagnosis of MS meant inevitable decline and disability. Now thousands of people around the world are living healthy, active lives on the Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis recovery program.Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis explains the nature of MS and outlines an evidence-based 7 step program for recovery. Professor George Jelinek devised the program from an exhaustive analysis of medical research when he was first diagnosed with MS in 1999. It has been refined through major ongoing international clinical studies under Professor Jelinek's leadership, examining the lifestyles of several thousand people with MS world-wide and their health outcomes.Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is invaluable for anyone recently diagnosed with MS, living with MS for years, or with a family member with MS. It makes an ideal resource for doctors treating people with MS.'I would have no hesitation in recommending Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis to my patients, but also to my friends and colleagues.' 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe overall incidence of meningiomas, particularly in the developed countries, is rising due to a growing size of the aging population, with people living longer and enjoying healthier lives than ever before. Additionally, an increased utilization of imaging studies such as computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) for routine evaluation of closed head injuries, paranasal sinus problems and various non-specific neurological symptoms, ranging from headaches to dizziness, has contributed to enhanced detection of incidental meningiomas. The book contains the most up-to-date information in all matters related to meningiomas, and is written by multiple contributors - internationally recognized experts in their respective fields from Asia, USA and Europe. This is an essential reference guide to neurosurgeons and neurologists (in training and in practice), as well as medical libraries, throughout the world. • PCCS Books Voices of the Voiceless: Person-Centred Approaches for People with Learning Difficulties

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis"Voices of the Voiceless" is an inspiring, passionate and comprehensive exploration that offers hope and encouragement to counsellors and practitioners working with people living with learning difficulties. Although the effects of learning difficulties and the effects of society's treatment of people with learning difficulties are lifelong and often severe, counselling and healing are possible. The author argues that even those people who have the most severe learning disabilities can benefit from counselling, and not simply from behaviour management or medication to manage and control them. Jan Hawkins integrates 15 years' experience of counselling and her 25 years' experience as a mother of a person with learning difficulties. The book contains many moving accounts of the healing process and detailed examples of interdisciplinary working and the power the Person-Centred Approach offers for those who are metaphorically and often literally voiceless.Trade ReviewIt is a long time since I have been so deeply moved by a book. In many ways, Jan Hawkins has produced in this extraordinary volume a kind of touchstone against which those of us who are person-centred practitioners can gauge our own integrity and test out anew the sincerity of our commitment to the therapeutic approach which we profess to embrace. At the same time the book holds up a mirror to some of the more sinister aspects of our society and compels us to acknowledge the powerful forces which operate to ensure the rejection of those who through their physical or mental impairment are condemned to live half a life or worse ... This book is a testimony to the glory of the human person, to the power of relationship and to the beauty of the person-centred approach which will not easily be refuted or surpassed. Professor Brian Thorne, University of East Anglia Through its powerful stories, the book challengse the very nature and purpose of 'the system' as it has emerged to support people with learning difficulties over many years. It encourages us to view the individual as a person with feelings, emotions and aspirations and not as a person with just a diagnosis or a condition that requires treatment.
