From a sophisticated afternoon tea to keeping small people amused or picnicking in the park there are plenty of ways to show off your creativity to your friends. The book starts with some useful guidance for beginners and a list of tools and equipment needed for the projects. New sewers should be able to tackle the quicker projects which will boost confidence before moving on to the other items. There are clear photos showing each step, full size templates (it irritates me no end when you have to scale templates up or down) and handy tips dotted throughout the book. I wish I had this book before I spent a fortune on buttoned seat pads! -- Sarah Dennis * Customer review *I was very fortunate to be chosen to review Debbie Shore's latest book, Sew Outdoor Living. I looked forward to it arriving through the post with great anticipation and was not disappointed when it arrived. As usual Debbie has presented the projects clearly and concisely and as always with Search Press the paper used is very good quality, making the whole feel of the book very pleasurable. On my first flick through the book I saw several appealing projects; the bunting in a bag would make a nice gift, the teepee would be perfect for keeping small children entertained and shaded while outside, the tic-tac-toe game in a bag ideal for picnics... A more detailed look later found me promising myself I would make the patchwork picnic mat and a placemat or half a dozen. I have shown the book to a number of friends who have all picked out their favourite projects, one chose the bottle tote, another the picnic caddy, someone else selected the heart decorations for an informal wedding party, it seems Debbie Shore has created something for everyone in this book. -- Stella Davis * Customer review *Another clear, concise, well illustrated and easy to follow book from Debbie Shore. From the contents page to the actual size templates included in this book it has been well thought out and invites you to try the projects - which could equally well be used inside or as gifts. The easy to follow instructions and photographs make understanding the processes for a not so confident sewer easier and, bonus - there's no paper patterns involved! Can't wait to make the Tic-Tac-Toe game! -- Jacqueline Mcintosh * Customer review *This is a nice book if you are a beginner sewer or need ideas to turn your sewing to making your outdoors a uniquely personal place to be. The book has lots of basic skills advice which is very useful to those of us knew to using fabrics these way. There is advice on fabrics, sewing techniques, what equipment you need. Each project is clear and easy to follow. I particularly want to create fitted chair cushions, loving the tips for making them fit perfectly whatever the chair shape, how to make a wigwam (who doesn’t want their own wigwam?) and the tic-tac-toe game, which I plan to scale up to make a picnic-mat-come-game-of-draughts! Maybe even bug chess eventually! Whether you follow the patterns faithfully or use them as a springboard to more adventurous designs it is beautifully illustrated. I suspect experienced sewers might find it somewhat simplistic but for me, I am loving it! -- Gil Colling * Customer review *Another hit with me, this book is crammed with tips and techniques. There is something for everyone in it, including things to keep the little ones happy, for the man who likes to BBQ, for a garden party or picnic. However, I tried. In fact, the book is very well planned out. The steps are easy to follow and you don't have to be an advanced crafter! Despite being a great way to use leftover fabric, the gift looked like a great quality, store bought product. The projects are cute, colourful and useful and as the title suggests, ideal for gifts. From toys to children's clothes there is something for everyone. I loved that, was design has a contrasting fat quarter that not only compliments the project but it also gives it an added quirkiness and depending on your fabric choice it will be pretty or retro. This book is perfect for beginner sewists, as the projects are quite simple, that said, there are many useful techniques that will advance your sewing skills. There are full sized pattern sheets included, and with easy instructions, accompanied by visual step by step hints and tips, so you really cannot go wrong. Highly recommended by me! -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *Like many quilters I have an ample stash of fat quarters, and this book is ideal for starting to use some of the stash. The book contains 16 projects, which make ideal presents for a wide range of recipients. To start with, there is a page that describes what a fat quarter is. After this, there is double page spread about what materials you will need for the projects; this section explains how and why the materials are used, which is useful for all projects, not only the ones in this book. There is a comprehensive list of the essential tools, including measuring, marking and cutting tools – again, this is valid for most sewing projects. The next section in the book is Techniques. This section is accompanied by colour photos with instructions. One part covers seams – including French seams, which sound tricky, but are actually very simple, and give a neat and professional finish to a project. There is advice on different ways to finish seams, and which way is more suited to different fabrics. The section then goes on to detail patchwork and quilting techniques, free motion embroidery, and appliqué. This is followed by adding trims, using twin needles and decorative stitches, as well as adding piping and bias binding and adding a zip. This section is one that I will be referring to regularly, and not only when making projects from this book. The main section is the one dedicated to projects. The project title double spread shows the finished project, gives a list of what you will need, and instructions for the preparation for the project. There then follows step-by-step instructions for making up the project, including diagrams and photographs. Some projects include ideas for adding other elements to the finished project. Throughout the book there are tips included, giving suggestions for altering the project, or or guidance on resizing a project. These tips are useful for many sewing projects, not just the ones in this book. What makes this book stand apart from many others, is the inclusion of two full sized pattern sheets in the back of the book. It is a great change from seeing patterns printed in the book itself, which sometimes requires enlarging the pattern. All in all this is a great resource – and one that I will be making good use of again and again. -- Christine Hutchins * Amazon *Absolutely loved this book. From the moment I received it, I was engrossed. In fact I started my first project from the book on the first night. Beautifully presented with full instructions for everything, along with patterns and amazing photographs that really inspire you. The book is suitable for beginners or experienced as everything is so clearly explained and set out. If birds and fabric and stitch are your thing, this is the book for you. * Judith Clarke *This is a beautifully illustrated book with thick glossy pages, the sort of book that makes a lovely gift for anyone into needlecraft. The book has six projects but its the inspiration from these projects that sets the book apart. Loads of gorgeous photos of the pictures/project that you could make and details of how to mount to a picture frame for instance or turn into a cushion. The book has five pages of templates of birds, boats and other related items to help bring your projects to life * Amanda Hayes *Issue 37 Rachel Sumner describes herself as an artist who uses textile techniques. She is also a self confessed hoarder of recycled materials. In this highly imaginative reference book she showcases the ways of capturing the essence of birds through the medium of stitch, using old pieces of fabric, recycled haberdashery items and found objects (nature-inspired postage stamps and tangled fishing thread). Incorporating techniques such as dyeing, working with disolvable fabric, applique and machine embroidery she explores designing, sketching, laying out, stitching scenes featuring puffins, seagulls, chickens, and blackbirds, in six different projects inspired by nature. Chapters focus on materials, equipment, designs, techniques, capturing character, depicting a scene and telling a story. Templates, photographs and simple instructions to help you along the way in this truly inspirational gallery of ideas. * Reloved *Search Press’ Stitched Textiles series focuses on contemporary textile artists’ work and features staged projects and techniques using a wide range of materials. This latest title shows how to depict birds through the medium of fabric and thread. This series is a good way of learning how to use a wide range of materials and methods including dyeing, appliqué, hand and machine embroidery, dissolvable fabrics and even found objects. If you have a stash of fabric scraps left over from other projects this book has many ways of using them up to make collage pictures. The bulk of this book is taken up with six projects but the first part focuses on what you need, an overview of techniques used and information about mounting, design and creating backgrounds. If you want to go into dyeing cloth and trying out shibori techniques the information here is not full enough for beginners but serves more to suggest another way of using fabrics. The projects themselves are a great way of learning to make pictures out of stitched cloth and you can choose from puffins, blackbirds, gulls (two projects depict these), chickens and an ark filled with birds. Each project features a series of captioned photographs including close ups of key areas. There are also galleries of other works by the author which briefly outline methods used and at the back all the templates are given at 50% size. I love the way you can make a whole picture out of scraps and most people who already use textiles in their crafts will have most if not all of the materials and tools already. A good addition to the series. * myshelf.com *I really didn't know you could create such amazing pictures with textiles. If you have never used textiles in this way before don't worry this book is going to take you through everything you need to know. You learn all about the equipment you will need. How to create your design and sketch out your ideas. If you struggle to create designs it's okay as the book takes you through using artworks as inspiration. The book then takes you through how you will be using the fabric and how to use the colours. You are then taught how to use the fabrics to build up a background, create a foreground, stitching, final touches and how to adapt your design. Types of fabric selection are discussed so that you can make the right decisions. The book even takes you through how to dye fabrics as well as using dissolvable fabric. The techniques you learn can be used to create any textile picture you want. You can either follow the designs in the book or create your own designs. You are then taken through a number of designs so that you can recreate them: Puffin, Chickens, Seagulls on a Boat, Blackbirds, Seagull on a Beach and Bird Ark. You also have galleries throughout of different designs that you can make. At the back of the book are the templates you will need to create the designs within the book. Sew Useful is just that, a book full of useful sewing projects to make. * Daily News South Africa *February 2015 I have been busy at my sewing machine thanks to Debbie Shore and her new book Sew Useful with 23 simple storage solutions to sew for the home. As soon as the book arrived to review, I pulled out my fabric and started choosing between all the projects. I decided on the toy bag to start as I’ve been wanting to use this A-Z printed fabric and thought it would suit perfectly. The projects have been designed for use on a home sewing machine, with step-by-step instructions and there is something for sewers of all abilities. This for me is important as I’m still learning to sew and even though I’m confident with the easier projects, I also want to challenge myself and learn as I work through the book. So far I have already added 2 new items to my sewing kit – eyelets/grommets and fabric glue – and there is a section on learning basic techniques and stitches. I am very pleased with the result and want to make a few more. There are some handy storage projects for the nursery including a nappy holder, toy hammock, laundry bag, storage cubes and hoop baskets for little bits and bobs like cotton balls. This book is full of newly developed slip-stitch patterns that merge lace with mosaic slip-stitch techniques in a very clever and precise way. I am a huge fan of Barbara’s designs. -- Faina Goberstein, author of The Art of Slip-Stitch Knitting and The Art of Seamless KnittingMosaic & Lace Knits is a collection of 20 shawls, cowls, scarves, hats, and other accessories, plus an instructional section with the basics of knitting slip stitches, how to read the charts, how to work mosaic in the round, and tips and tricks. It’s full of big, beautiful color photos of all the projects and closeups of stitch patterns. -- Lee Meredith, leethal.netCreate your very own spa at home with knitted towels and accessories. The 30 original designs included make great gifts for mom, recent graduates and more. * Garden 2017 *Lace is a very popular technique in knitting. Basic lace knitting is as simple as creating yarn overs. Have you ever tried mosaic knitting? Mosaic knitting is also known as slip stitch knitting. It's a fun and easy way to add some colorwork to your knitting. The easy part is that you are only knitting with one color at a time. There is no need to carry multiple yarns. Barbara took lace knitting and mosaic knitting and combined it together. GENIUS! ... These techniques may look intimidating, but fear not. Barbara has added a instructional section in the book that covers the basics of knitting slip stitches, how to read lace and mosaic charts, how to work mosaic in the round, and tips and tricks to help you avoid potential troubles. She includes clear photos to help you learn the techniques that will lead you to success in knitting mosaic and lace. I really like the part where she goes into detail about carrying the colors up the sides and what kind of selvage it would create. Barbara took the time to knit a swatch to show the different examples and how it would like like if you chose one technique over the other. I am a real stickler about details and finishing techniques and that kind of information is so important, in my opinion. -- Angela TongSo have you noticed how I tend to say things like "don’t worry, it’s not really colorwork" or "it’s ok, you only ever work with one yarn at once" when I talk about my projects? Yeah, that’s because I’m sort of scared of having to manage two strands of yarn on one row (and just possibly a little in awe of folks who can pull it off it). Judging from what I hear from you guys, I’m not alone. If you’re with me in the one-yarn-at-a-time camp (or if you’re one of those fancy two-at-a-time folks and want to try something fun), check out Barbara Benson’s new book, Mosaic & Lace Knits. My first introduction to mosaic knitting was in Barbara Walker’s books (she talks about it in some of her stitch dictionaries, and later did a whole book on the subject). Barbara Benson was inspired by the same books (as so many of us designers are!), and wanted to take the technique even further. She’s developed methods for incorporating lace and patterning into mosaic knitting. The result is fabric and projects that still have the "how the heck did you do that?" wow factor, but without any of the heaviness that sometimes comes with traditional mosaic knitting. The book starts off with a very approachable introduction to the subject and shows you all the techniques you’ll need to work the patterns. Now, Barbara isn’t mean enough to say this, but I am…don’t skip this bit. This technique is probably new to you, and you’re going to have much more fun with the patterns if you take the time to read the introductory bits. I promise it’s worth it. Once you’ve read it, you’ll be ready to dive into the patterns! Twelve of the 20 projects are what I affectionately think of as snuggly neck things (meaning scarves, shawls, and cowls), three are hats, three are hand things (the fingertip equivalent of snuggly neck things), and the last two projects are a shopping bag and a pillow. Smaller scale projects like this are the perfect place to experiment with a new technique. They give you enough room to practice and feel clever without making you worry you’ve taken on something daunting! I confess I wish a few more of the patterns came in multiple sizes (I have a big head and big hands…one-size-fits-all things don’t generally fit me), but I suspect for many of them you can improvise by either adding in extra repeats or working at a bigger gauge (you’re a knitter, you’re clever, I have faith in you). -- Hunter Hammersen, Pantsville PressFor knitters who like a little challenge, this book features a number of colorful and fun projects that combine the best elements of both lace and slip-stitch (mosaic) colorwork techniques and patterns. There’s good tutorials and technique information, and it’s well within the grasp of an intermediate knitter – it’s clever and innovative, but not nearly as difficult as it might seem. The projects range from a pair of quick-knit mittens designed as an introduction to the methods, to some not-too-overwhemling hats, and some larger shawl projects. I also like that the projects offer lots of interesting new ways to use up all the skeins of variegated and hand-dyed yarns we have in our stashes. -- Knitty * Fall 2017 *Barbara Benson has been experimenting with the fusion of mosaic knitting and lace stitches over the past few years, and has created "Mosaic & Lace Knits: 20 Innovative Patterns Combining Slip-Stitch Colorwork and Lace Techniques", a truly impressive collection of 20 shawls, cowls, scarves, hats, and other accessories. To make the patterns accessible to any knitter, she has added a helpful instructional section in "Mosaic & Lace Knits" that covers the basics of knitting slip stitches, how to read lace and mosaic charts, how to work mosaic in the round, and tips and tricks to help you avoid potential pitfalls. The book has projects for all level knitters. Start with a project in which the mosaic and lace are worked in different sections, such as a hat with alternating bands of mosaic and lace. Then progress to more complex patterns where the slip stitch and lace stitches are worked at the same time. Each stitch plays an important role -- these patterns will keep the interest of even the most experienced knitter! Beautifully and profusely illustrated throughout, "Mosaic & Lace Knits" is very highly recommended for community library Needlecraft instructional reference collections. It should be noted for personal reference collections that "Mosaic & Lace Knits" is also available in a digital book format. -- James A. Cox, Editor and Chief, Wisconsin Bookwatch

There are also more challenging ideas like a textured weave, and quilt-style piecing. There are small jewelry ideas, which I like. The small amulet bags, flowers & leaves, doll blanket, bracelets (and more) are sure to win a younger student's fancy. From simple to intermediate projects for children and adults, this will be a good resource for many years. Additional variations, like weaving on the bias or creating sculptural shapes, may help to inspire more advanced weavers to take a closer look at applying this technique to their work. Readers may be surprised with the discovery that the vintage pin loom projects have a place among contemporary textiles. --Jan Hewitt Towsley -- Shuttle, Spindle & DyepotPin looms seem to be popping up everywhere these days. For weavers with limited room or a limited budget, or who want a more portable option for weaving, the pin loom is a wonderful choice. Of course, after weaving the first few squares, many weavers ask, "What do I do with all these bits?" If you're pin loom weaver extraordinaire Margaret Stump, the answer is, "Just about anything." In her latest book on pin-loom weaving, Stump shares her inspired designs for pieces woven on a variety of portable looms, including the standard 4" x 4" loom, a 2" x 2" pin loom, an adjustable fine-gauge knitting loom, and a potholder loom. Almost a third of the book focuses on tutorials. In addition to instructions for weaving with each type of loom, the book shows how to make a 2" x 2" loom and how to join woven pieces. I especially enjoyed the tutorial for weaving with yarn on a potholder loom. Anyone who enjoys weaving on the ubiquitous 4" x 4" loom will love the tutorials on bias weaving and weaving triangles. The triangle tutorial is particularly clever and opens up a whole new world of design possibilities with this simple loom. -- Christina Garton, Handwoven

I now teach felting workshops and am completely obsessed with needle felting! I love making people and consider myself an experienced felter but when I saw they were bringing out a book on dolls, I couldn't resist! It's so comprehensive, even if you've never felted before you could still start with this book. It then takes you through several projects of increasing skill to very detailed, beautiful dolls. Unlike most craft books, I want to make every single project in here. The instructions and pictures are fab. Hands down, this is by far the best, I don't think you'd need any others! * Customer Review *I’ve only just recently begun needle felting but I’m already hooked. I started with a Roz and Judy book Needle Felting for Beginners and was impressed with it, so I ordered this in advance. It was definitely worth waiting for as I’ve received it this afternoon and I’ve had my nose in it for a few hours now. It takes you from a basic figure through ever more advanced ones to what I would consider very advanced figures and faces. The instructions and photos are excellent, very clear and detailed, which means even I’m going to feel pretty confident at having a go at all of them. There are plenty of tips and even instructions on how to make needle felted eyes, rather than using glass ones or black beads and also mouths with open lips and teeth. The “Mother Earth” doll especially, has really inspired me to make a variation myself. All in all, a fantastic book and should be on every needle felters book shelf. Many thanks to Roz and Judy and I wait with baited breath for their next book. -- Julia Martin * Customer Review *There are no better needle felting tutorials to be found, than those by our very own well loved "Woolly Felters." I have all their books and they are all superb. Not only are Roz and Judy excellent needle felters, they also are blessed with the exceptional skill of being able to convey their talent in the most thorough, and simply formulated way. They have this knack for being able to completely get inside the head of the total beginner and ensure that you can understand the instructions and have complete success, whilst still remaining completely relevant to the more experienced felter. All this without being condescending too! There are no other books or tutorials out there that I am aware of, that teach you how to make realistic figures of real life people. The skill of these two sisters has to be seen to be believed. Just look at the back cover of the book if you don't believe me. You instantly know who they are! From personal experience, I firmly believe that their books are the only ones that you need for total needle felting success. * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction About needle felting What you need Inspiration and design Getting started The basic doll Top ‘help me’ tips Creating an inner core Armatures Creating character and expression The projects Queen of Hearts Danny Doodoll Little Dancer Knitting Nigel Christmas Fairy Kawaii Kate Silver Surfer Perfect Portraits Mother Earth Weird and Wonderful Templates Index
