Book SynopsisFill your home with small works of art that embody the simple life. Start with 16 useful handmade gifts in the popular Zakka design style, then add adorable motifs pulled from everyday life. 35 charming designs are printed on iron-on transfer paper–have fun sketching them with bits of fabric and free-motion stitching. Customize a variety of bags, a fabric basket, a makeup roll, coasters, and more. You can even use images pulled from a photograph, a rubberstamp, or a child’s drawing.Trade ReviewAdorn fabric projects with machine or hand embroidered drawings and add a personal touch to all kinds of items with this book. There are sixteen projects and thirty-five different zakka style sketches on transfer paper plus plenty of ideas for producing your own. This is a great way of using up scraps of fabric too as many are incorporated into designs and best of all you don’t need much to get started. You don’t need to draw either when you have exhausted the transfers; rubber stamps, tracings, doodles and more can be utilised in this fun, modern style of embroidery. The book begins with the basic techniques, which are quite varied depending on how you want to approach your work. There are several methods of transferring designs, how to set up a sewing machine or what to use if you want to do it by hand and how to use fabric scraps. This book is the work of two friends and each has their own tips and methods which enhance the whole, showing that this is a style of embroidery that is very open to your own interpretation. The projects follow, each with a list of what you need, cutting guide, instructions with some photographs and a larger picture of the finished item. This is not a book for total sewing beginners but any improver level stitcher can join in the fun. Practice makes perfect when stitching small pictures with a sewing machine but there is not a lot of sewing knowledge required and there are also instructions on how to do it by hand if you prefer. Projects are grouped in themes and there are mats and coasters for the table, various bags, items for the sewing box, art to hang on the wall and “everyday” items such as a pencil case and a place to store brushes. Motifs include tea and coffee pots, sewing and crafting items, words, houses, hot air balloon and a family group traced from a photo. This is a fun book that encourages the reader to have a go and is an ideal way of making individual and personal gifts. * myshelf.com *I love this book! • Quilt the Beloved Africa

Sally Milner Publishing Pty Ltd Quilt the Beloved Africa

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe craft of African quilting is a beautifully textured and vibrant art form that bears testimony to the rich and complex nature of the African continent. In this, their third book, doyennes of the discipline Pat Parker and Jenny Williamson delve deepter into what it is that sets this relatively new style quilting apart from the more well-established American and European styles that have dominated quilting circles for hundreds of years. The quilts in Quilt the Beloved Africa are a fantastic mix of colourful fabrics that are the key differentiators of the African style of quilting. Another key feature of the local style of quilting is the use of images drawn from its vibrant flora, fauna, and the faces of its people. With a wonderful gallery of quilts followed by thirteen projects, all with easy step-by-step instructions, templates and wonderful colour photographs of the quilts and the inspirations for the quilts, this book will take you on a quilting adventure through Africa like no other. We hope you enjoy your journey through their third African quilting odyssey – a beautiful palette of textures, colours and patterns that continue to make African quilting a joy to behold!Trade ReviewAug 10 A stunning book with quilts inspired by modern Africa. The first 19 pages show vividly coloured quilts made by the authors. There are instructions for making further 13 quilts and photos of contemporary rural life. The quilts combine piecing and appliqué designs. The templates are of people engaged in everyday activities, lighting fires, fishing, playing football. There are weaving patterns, traditional houses, butterflies and much more. The instructions assume some knowledge of the techniques used. All the quilts are densely quilted, often with shadow quilting. A wonderful collection of beautiful quilts giving us views of African life we rarely see. It is my choice as book of the month. * Patchwork & Quilting *Sept 10 This is the third book by Jenny Williamson and Pat Barker, who have been quilting together and teaching for 25 years. It includes a gallery of gorgeous quilts and accompanying photographs of African scenes, showing the flora, fauna, landscapes and faces of Africa that have inspired their quilts. There are 13 quilt projects and a set of instructions for making two very sweet African dolls. The quilts are characteristically full of colour and vibrancy and tend to include lots of appliqué showing images from nature, African scenes and people. Although there are one or two projects involving simple piecing, which are quite contemporary in nature, the book is probably more suitable for fans of appliqué. The majority of templates need to be enlarged to fit into block sizes which could be a little taxing for novices, but once you are comfortable working out percentages, and have mastered your preferred method of appliqué, you will be making colourful, lively quilts in no time at all. * Popular Patchwork *Table of ContentsSoul Sisters Shall We Begin Quilt Gallery Shifting Sands - Jenny Williamson Can't See the Woods for the Leaves - Jenny Williamson We Believe in Angels - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Zulu Kingdom - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Incantation on Immortality - Terry Pryke Reflections - Pat Parker Afrocentric versus Eurocentric - Paul Schutte Intsizwa (Young Man) and Intombi (Young Woman) - Carol Smith Celebration - Carol Smith On the Fringe - Pat Parker Circles in the Sand - Pat Parker Liberty in Africa - Jenny Williamson Psammobates Geometricus - Shirley Prakke Ndebele Apron - Jenny Williamson Dashing to Durban - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Brilliant Baobab - Carolyn Kode Desert Flowers - Pat Parker Kalahari - Jenny Williamson Village People - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Ekithuleni - Pat Parket Quilts to Make African Alphabet - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker African Christmas - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker All a Flutter - Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker Elephant Hide - Pat Parker

Book SynopsisMethods and tips for successful rag weaving with a variety of materials and looms, including rigid heddle looms as well as floor looms. Charts and worksheets make it easy to find the information weavers need to get started, and 21 projects with instructions and drafts provide inspiration and ideas.Trade ReviewWeaving Western Sakiori is a comprehensive guide to the wonderful world of Japanese rag weaving. Amanda's years of researching the history of Sakiori have lead her to a clear understanding of the techniques used for weaving Sakiori and to develop her own style of weaving Sakiori, which she shares with all of us in the projects suggested in the book. –Tom Knisely, author of Weaving Rag Rugs, Handwoven Table Linens, and Handwoven Baby Blankets -- Tom KniselyTraditional Japanese sakiori rag weaving originated as a way to deal with a scarcity of new textiles to be made into clothing. And while many of Robinette's 21 weaving projects adhere to that tradition by repurposing old materials, a variety of the projects incorporate new textiles, tools and techniques, including rigid heddle and floor looms. There is a sett chart for rag weaving with common warp yarns, a wet-finishing chart, and instructions for preparing your chosen material. One of Robinette's inspirations offers a creative way to preserve a wedding dress as a keepsake bed runner. If only the book could supply the courage needed to make those one-of-a-kind cuts!

  • Potholder Loom Weaving Techniques for multicolor

Stackpole Books Potholder Loom Weaving Techniques for multicolor

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThe author explains that meeting this popular little pin loom as an adult meant she had no preconceived ideas that it was only a child's toy, seeing it as having unlimited design potential allied with low-tech equipment and virtually no yarn waste. The content of the book is divided into three main sections: Getting Started, listing equipment needed; Techniques, an introduction to the actual weaving; and finally Projects. She offers detailed step-by-step instructions, accompanied by excellent photographs of each step in creating basic squares or triangles in plain colours, simple stripes and checks. There is advice on how to design using colour, pattern, and texture using different yarns and stitch combinations, followed by suggestions on finishing methods for edges with fringes, crochet edges and lucet cords. A chapter on tapestry weaving takes the reader through creating a sampler using a drawing underneath the weaving; how to create shapes such as faces following a drawing is explained clearly. Projects for the home include, of course, potholders, but also larger projects where individual modules are joined together for table runners, pillows, and square baskets and boxes. Final chapters offer ideas for wall hangings and fashion accessories. For someone keen to experiment with textures and yarns using inexpensive equipment which takes up little space, this book offers an excellent introduction, and offers links to suppliers and how-to videos. -- Lyn Duffus * The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *

C & T Publishing Make Pincushions: 10 Darling Projects to Sew

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIs it time to upgrade from the basic tomato? Treat yourself to a new pincushion that’s sure to put a smile on your face! Sew 10 playful patterns from top designers, from 3D shapes to cute little critters. Try out a variety of techniques-like appliqué, embroidery, and piecing-in this value-packed booklet. Perfect for swaps, gifts, and stocking stuffers, these charming pincushions are so quick to sew, you'll want to make them again and again.Trade ReviewIf you sew you probably use a pincushion, but this doesn’t have to be boring. If you have friends or family who sew as well here is a whole book of twelve different projects that are sure to put smiles on the recipients’ faces. They are also fun to make, great ways of using up scraps and are ideal for fundraising. This is a book with projects by several different people and does not have an introduction or a section on techniques of what you need. A certain basic level of sewing knowledge is therefore essential, but if you require a pincushion you should already have enough to proceed! Each project lets you know what you need, gives the finished size, a thumbnail description of the designer and construction, cutting and other instructions in words. There is the odd simple diagram or layout and a page of basic hand embroidery stitches, while at the back are all the patterns helpfully life size. Choose from various variations on the basic cushion-type square including embroidered, log cabin or kaleidoscope patchwork plus pincushions in the shape of a house, ladybug, cupcake, donut, elephant and ant. As this is an American book measurements are in imperial and the stocklist at the back for all the fabric is for US residents, but mostly the fabrics used are fairly plain or generic prints. The detail is in the shaping and decoration, making this a book for using with a vast array of fabrics. This is a fun book of simple projects that is going to appeal to a wide range of stitchers. * myshelf.com *I love this series of books from C & T Publishing. They bring together different designers and create some amazing projects. I love pincushions. I collect them including ones I make so this book is ideal for me. Each of the designers create their own look of project and fill it with their own personality. Using sewing, embroidery and different designs the projects are all different. The pincushions are great fun and the only problem you may have is choosing which one to make first. The patterns have full instructions including diagrams to help you put the pieces together. All the patterns are held in the back of the book and are of a full size. I personally will copy from the book, just to use to create the projects. I'll be making quite a few if not all of the designs. All the designs are great fun and make fantastic pincushions. * Crochet Addict UK *If you are like me and always losing your pins, these projects are fun to make and useful too. Sometimes it is good to have small projects to sew that are finished quickly. There are a variety of 12 different shapes, that even include an ant and they have wide appeal. It's a great selection. You can also adapt the idea and make many more pincushions. For example, the cupcake could be adapted with different colours and embellishments into dozens of pincushions. Various techniques are used to create the pincushions from applique to piecing and embroidery. Each pincushion is designed by a different designer and has appeared in a previous publication. The instructions are clear and the photos are great - this is a fun yet practical book for any sewing enthusiast. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *

Rodabaugh has an engaged community (her kits are in high demand and her classes sell out quickly) and a proven ability to tempt sewists and nonsewists alike to take up needle and thread.“When Katrina Rodabaugh gave up ‘convenience Trade Review“Katrina provides the inspiration, the motivation, and the techniques to put daydreams into practice, whether you want to DIY it or ask a professional to do it for you, and the more you delve into her universe, the more you are compelled to do as she does.” -- from the Foreword by Orsola de Castro, co-founder and global creative director, Fashion Revolution“When Katrina Rodabaugh gave up ‘convenience in fashion,’ she began what she calls ‘a relationship with commitment instead.’ Circularity, invention, the impulse to create, traditional craft, and modern handwork fuel Katrina’s inspiring new book, Make Thrift Mend, indeed.” -- Natalie Chanin, The School of Making and Alabama Chanin“Katrina’s philosophy is masterfully distilled in Make Thrift Mend. She has a gift for making sustainable living into a spiritual practice, while at the same time grounding it in accessible practices. Treading lightly upon the earth does not require a hefty paycheck; anyone can learn how to clothe themselves in alignment with their values with the skills taught in these pages.” -- Meg McElwee, Sew LiberatedStaff Pick: Powell’s “A slow fashion book for the thoughtful fashionista. Rodabaugh states: ‘Start where you are. Start by looking at the clothes you already own before shopping for new. Can they be mended or remodeled rather than replaced?’ This isn’t just another closet advice book. Rodabaugh gives us inspiring ideas for rejuvenating our old togs into treasures to be proud of. I was a fan of her first book, Mending Matters, and I’m just as excited about Make Thrift Mend. Recommended by Tracey T. * Powells.com *

Stackpole Books Mix and Match Knit Sweater Designs

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisKnit the sweaters of your dreams!Rita Maassen's easy-to-use system for interchanging the elements of basic sweater designs is genius and will have you making sweater after sweater to your own specifications. The book begins with six basic pullover designs, then the author explains her system for mixing the elements necklines, armhole style, silhouette, colour and texture patterns and gives you the instructions for each different design element. Finally, she puts her system into practice in 23 unique sweater designs, giving the full instructions for each. You may then either follow these patterns as written, or do your own mixing and matching to create your own unique sweater pattern. Over 70,000 different sweaters are possible with the options presented!Trade ReviewThe designs in this beautiful book are modern, simple and are all oh so gorgeous! I love the concept of being able to decide what collar you like, what length sleeves you prefer and being able to create a unique and wearable garment that you have made yourself. The sweaters are basic designs, of which there are six to choose from. You then choose what your specifications are and use the pattern provided. These can then create 23 designs, but over 70,000 different sweaters can be made using the various changes that have been selected. Mix and Match is an easy to understand guide, and while you do need to be able to knit, a few basic knitting tutorial pages are included that will help a new knitter to learn. Filled with inspiration, the sweaters are photographed beautifully. The colours chosen for the designs are perfect for chilly days. Perfect for every knitter. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *What an informative book for knitters who would like to tweak or create their own designs. Rita outlines all the basic jumpers patterns and shows how they can be changed to suit the person’s needs. I love the idea of lace sleeves and borders against a stocking stitch body of a jumper. The book will let your imagination go wild and give the confident knitter the opportunity to experiment. Whether you like crew, v neck, boat neck or rolled necked tops for a jumper, it is now your decision and then you can progress to a cable, textured, plain or lace body and sleeves. Hems can also be varied, so to make things a bit different why not try a cable hem and cuffs instead of the usual rib? Buy the book and start being more creative with confidence. -- Monica Russel * The Knit Knacks *
