Search Press Ltd Furoshiki: The Japanese Art of Wrapping with
Book SynopsisFuroshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, and is used to wrap gifts and create bags for carrying things more easily. Once you have learned the basic methods of tying and folding, you can tie furoshiki in different ways to suit the size and shape of the contents within. There is no sewing involved and, using just a square of fabric, Aurélie Le Marec shows you how to wrap all kinds of items from books to guitars and laptops to wine bottles. You can adapt furoshiki to suit items of all shapes and sizes and, with more than 50 furoshiki folds explained with step-by-step illustrations and clear instructions, you can help to reduce waste by making furoshiki part of your everyday life!Trade ReviewFrench author Le Marec tries her hand at explaining an ancient Japanese art. As she points out, furoshiki is the ultimate, ecologically perfect answer to the plastic-bag epidemic, as it advocates reusing or reconstructing fabric into a covering that can often get double or even triple use as a tablecloth, picnic setting, or part of a larger item, like a quilt. An upfront section outlines the history of furoshiki, considerations on "becoming green," and options for fabrics, sizes, colours, and patterns. Black-and-white illustrations show the how-tos of different fabric knotting methods within the first few pages and are also embedded in each of the 50-plus projects, along with a quality colour photograph of the finished piece. Across three categories (for carrying, gift wrapping, and decorating), Le Marec showcases practical projects like a laptop bag, flower or bottle wrap, and a ready-to-hug bunny wrap that could encompass a kid’s toy. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that's folded to create bags for carrying things. Furoshiki is an ancient Japanese technique for wrapping with a simple square of fabric. First used in 710 AD, the author touches on the history of Furoshiki as well as the meaning and symbolism of giving a beautifully wrapped gift. She also shares how Furoshiki has become the symbol of Mottainai in Japan (avoiding waste and the philosophy of reduce, reuse and recycle). The art of wrapping is not only creative but is an easy step in saying goodbye to plastic bags and gift wrap and using natural or recycled fabric materials instead. Full of colour photographs and illustrations, the author shows the various knots and takes you step-by-step through over 50 different projects. The beauty of this technique is that there are thousands of possibilities for using Furoshiki in your daily life from wrapping plant pots, creating handbags and carry-alls to wrapping books and bottles, making cushions, and even a guitar case to name a few. I've attached a photo of the laptop carrier I made which proved to be very strong and much prettier than my old laptop bag! Not all plants are native to the UK but are no less beautiful. Hisako uses DMC embroidery linen, in off white. The embroidery floss is also DMC and worked over two threads. The first pages illustrate all the motifs with the corresponding page numbers of the fully worked piece. Five different stitches are used – cross, back, straight, ¾, and Holbein stitch. All stitches are illustrated in the middle of the book together with project instructions, tools, and materials. The charts follow, which are very clear and are easy to understand, with thread numbers and corresponding symbols. These pieces can be framed in their own right, but Hisako also shows how the embroideries can embellish household linen, clothing, and accessories. C & T Publishing The Best of Sewing Machine Fun for Kids: Projects
Book SynopsisAre you ready to become a sewing craftinista? Beat boredom with 14 new and updated sewing projects you can make yourself! Start with a few beginner-friendly projects to help you learn your machine, like handmade cards and cool accessories, and work your way up to fun challenges like a fabric notebook cover and drawstring backpack. Along the way, you’ll play games to help you practice so you can ace your next sewing project. Pretty soon, your parent, grandparent, big sis, or best friend will be coming to you for sewing advice!Trade ReviewHere is a book that makes learning to use a sewing machine great fun even for the youngest child. With plenty of games and activities to help them get to grips with even the more complex tasks fast this book is a sure-fire winner – no wonder this is the second edition! I wish this book had been around when I learned to sew. It is filled with colorful child-friendly activities making ordinary things like identifying sewing machine parts, sewing around complex shapes, safety rules and more fun. There are lots of projects too from making greetings cards and Christmas tree decorations to wallets, appliqué motifs, bags, and a soft toy burger! A panel of young stitchers aged 7-17 have suggested and tested out everything so you can be sure that it hasn’t just been dreamed up by experienced adults. Techniques covered include sewing on paper as well as fabric, working with patterns, using fusible web and freezer paper, pressing, filling and looking after the machine. I particularly like the way the book has been laid out, with good-sized print, colorful diagrams and some amusing cartoons as well as puzzles, check lists and photographs of finished items. Laid out in this way everything looks fun and do-able, not too daunting and has a purpose once made up. Another point in the book’s favor is that the items to make are not “girly”. This is a book a boy can enjoy using too with monsters, an owl, peace sign, Christmas shapes and more all being very unisex. A winner all round! * myshelf.com *Table of ContentsI'm bored. Duke University Press ExtraOrdinary Craft and Contemporary Art
Book SynopsisArtists, critics, curators, and scholars develop theories of craft in relation to art, chronicle how fine art institutions understand and exhibit craft media, and offer accounts of activist crafting.Trade Review“Extra/Ordinary is not only the best anthology of recent writing on craft out there, it also delivers several assessments of the Do-It-Yourself movement, which is sorely in need of critical interpretation.”—Glenn Adamson, Victoria and Albert Museum“Maria Elena Buszek has compiled an anthology that matches the dynamism of a field in flux. As a museum curator responsible for developing exhibitions that examine contemporary craft, I actively seek tools that provide context for craft from within, across, and outside this arena’s historic borders. The essays compiled here provide access to diverse voices and approaches, filling a current void in scholarship and engaging craft from a range of perspectives and places in a shifting culturescape. Buszek’s anthology moves across discursive platforms to share fresh ways of thinking about craft in relationship to gender, domesticity, feminism, activism, and science. Here, ordinary craft is the focus of productive criticism rather than denied, broadening the frameworks for how we connect craft to meaning today.”—Namita Gupta Wiggers, Museum of Contemporary Craft“Maria Elena Buszek’s volume critically unravels assumptions about craft and pieces together new theories about contemporary handmaking that are at once vibrant, textured, and necessarily scrappy.”—Julia Bryan-Wilson, University of California, Irvine“Extra/Ordinary begins to establish, with refreshing honesty, this thing that has become Craftivism. Time will tell if it sticks.” -- Jessica Hemmings * Surface Design Journal *“[A] smart, sassy collection of essays . . . bound to be a new classic for both academics and craft artists.” -- Antonia Blair * Bust *“[A] stellar collection of interdisciplinary essayists. . . . [T]his collection features full color illustrations, figures and photographs which not only clarify the processes and products referenced in the accompanying articles but also makes the book a joy to read, enhancing as it does the visual performance of the text itself. The inclusion of the full-color documentation of artistic process as well as the art objects produced therefore honors the main premise of the text: that craft can and should be understood as a liminal form of culturally performative fine art.” -- Kristen Williams * Liminalities *“[A] timely response to contemporary art’s interest in craft, challenging the perception that artists choose media or their work with the mere wanton abandon of a child in front of a pick’n’mix counter. Instead, its various authors explore the complexity of art’s interaction with craft, making subtle note of those covering this terrain before.” -- Stephen Knott * Crafts *“Finally, a reason to put down the knitting needles. . . . Like a quiltmaker, Buszek has assembled a fine array of writers and topics. . . .” -- Anastasia Masurat * Bitch *“This volume fills a void in the scholarship that examines the meaning and the diverse roles that craft plays in the discourse surrounding contemporary art and social, political and popular culture bringing together the voices of artists, curators, cultural thinkers and scholars. Together these authors have opened the dialogue allowing craft to have its own voice and its own meaning, no longer defined by or against fine art.” -- Angela Brayham * Visual Studies *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations vii Acknowledgments xi Introduction: The Ordinary Made Extra/Ordinary / Mary Elena Buszek 1 Redefining Craft: New Theory Making and Naming: The Lexicon of Studio Craft / M. TSSREVIEWSDOTCOMTrade Review10 projects to make inspired by the work of Beatrix Potter using applique with her characters such as Peter Rabbit but not using Potter’s original drawings and illustrations. There is a short introduction on Beatrix Potter by Helen Bertram, followed by materials, applique techniques, hand embroidery stitches and then the projects. These include a cover for an iron, a nursery quilt and bunting, wool felt ball, hexies, floral wallhanging, cushion, Hill Top wool felt storage box, wedding quilt and another quilt shown unfinished. There are templates at the back of the book. Overall I think this is a good book. * yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Content – 10 sewing and stitching projects based on stories and characters of Beatrix Potter. A couple of craft projects relate to Potter’s home at ‘Hill Top’ and the surrounding farmland in The Lake District, UK (now a National Trust property) Introduction Australian Author, Michele Hill talks of being bowled over by the gallery displays of both William Morris and Beatrix Potter inspired quilts at the 2016 Tokyo Quilt Festival. Already conversant and somewhat obsessed with the life and work of William Morris, Hill made connections of these two famous people and began to research Beatrix Potter. Being an award winning quilter, Hill had in mind to write a Beatrix Potter book. Hill had the help and encouragement of history buffs who she names and credits in her welcome message and who also contributed background information, and photographic images from the archives shown in the Life of Beatrix Potter that is presented on pages 7 and 8. Range of information 8/10 skills: machine applique and sewing machine use and techniques; binding; hand embroidery stitching (represented in step-by-step instruction); quilting – fabric, materials and terminology. Use of other textiles and materials, and patterns. One project suggests the use of a Lightbox, also the mention of IKEA purchases the author made to finish projects. https://tssreviews.com/2017/03/25/book-review-stitching-with-beatrix-potter/ * TSS Reviews * Inside this book are ten projects based on the work and stories of loved children’s author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. As the introduction states this is not a series of cute toys but pieces inspired by her characters and her work. The book starts with a short history of her life complete with photographs of Hill Top Farm and other locations. In addition throughout the book there are more quotations and photographs explaining the inspiration behind the projects, making this an attractive and informative work. After a short section on what you need and information about machine appliqué and hand embroidery stitches the rest of the book consists of the projects. Each one has a photograph of the finished item in situ plus several more showing the various stages plus clear diagrams. The list of what you need is given in imperial and metric and there is a nice mix of large and small projects for a range of abilities. There are decorative pinwheels, a cushion, wallhanging, iron cover, quilts, a box and a felt ball for a young child. Embroidered characters grace many items, but the cushion was inspired by the grand clothes being made by the Tailor of Gloucester, the box depicts Hill Top Farm and my own favorite has to be the reproduction of the magnificent patchwork quilt owned by Ms Potter’s parents. Techniques involved include hand embroidery, machine appliqué, patchwork, using wool felt and quilting and the whole book is aimed at intermediate needlecrafters. It is a handsome volume that will appeal to any sewing enthusiast who loves Beatrix Potter’s delightful work. * myshelf.com *Table of ContentsBeatrix Potter History General Instructions P is for Pinwheels (Pinwheel) Mrs Tiggy-Winkle (Iron Cover) Bubbles and Bunting (Nursery Quilt) Let's Play (Wool Felt Ball) Handmade Hexies (Lap Quilt) Floral Frieze (Wall Hanging Cherry Twist (Cushion) Hill Top (Wool Felt Box) 1863 - A Wedding Quilt (Quilt) Serendipity (Quilt)
